About John Scott...

John Scott is the worst player in the Hawk's sweater, right? I can see it, all the bloggers out here can see it. Hell, my semi-retarded (literally) half-drunk (or more) football fanatic cousin can see it, and he doesn't know jack about hockey.

The one thing that all these people also seem to think, is that Joel Quenneville, NHL coach and former NHL player can't see it. Everybody is always crying about John Scott playing in the lineup, diminishing our chances of winning, John Scott sucks this, John Scott sucks that, he only fights and nobody is dumb enough to fight him anymore.

Obviously, there is another reason Quenneville is playing John Scott other than his noticeable skill set. Nobody ever seems to even ask or wonder what that might be, instead they'd rather just question Quenneville's competence, and sound their battle horns to rally the troops behind their oblivious points of view.

From what I hear, John Scott is one of the hardest workers ALL THE TIME. During practice, on the ice and off. I don't know if you guys have ever played sports that you weren't all that great at, but let me tell you, when you are a guy who is in a similar position as John Scott or any of the guys competing for a bottom role, it just SUCKS ASS to work harder than anybody else, day in and day out, while superstar-X lollygags around, doesn't work hard etc., but come game time, all that is pushed aside because he's the one who ultimately gives the team a better shot at winning.

Now I'm not saying when the game is on the line you throw John Scott out on the point for the PP because he worked a little harder that Patrick Sharp did at practice or that everybody else doesn't work hard, but John Scott is not the reason the team is losing games. And if John Scott is working harder than, Lepisto, and OD could probably use as much rest as he can get considering it's November, he's old as hell and we'll probably need him a bit more near the end of the season, there should be no problem with Quenneville dressing John Scott. Like I said, John Scott is not the reason for a Hawks loss any more than Lepisto is reason they win.

Keeping your players in check is very important for a coach to do. Part of that is showing players you reward hard work ethic, and sit half-ass (Bickell?) efforts. If young guys trying to bust through to the NHL see John Freaking Scott playing in the NHL because he busts his ass at practice all the time, you can imagine that they're going to bust their asses as well.

It should also be noted that all the players seem to love Scott, and apparently he brings quite a bit of unification to the locker room.

When the end of season approaches, you can almost guarantee that we'll be seeing less and less of John Scott when the games start to matter more. Until then quit yer bitchin'. Please.

The problem with that is

Q clearly doesn’t trust the guy at all, only playing him 7 minutes a night. The result is that someone has to pick up that extra time. Usually that ends up being Duncan Keith, who skates enough as it is. That amount of ice time adds up, and isn’t going to be helpful to DK and Hjalmersson come March.

So, while Q may have ulterior motives to playing Scott now, it’s somewhat shortsighted to bagskate DK every game to justify it.

Furious George! What happened to your beautiful face?!?

um

if Q needs to skate Murdersaurus to motivate his team then someone needs to be fired.
But I do take your point, he’s a hard worker and yes, he’s improved and yes, he’s a popular guy.. what he’s not is an NHL-level Defenseman and, while that’s hardly his fault, no amount of effort can make up for that.
Plus, as AJ notes above, he’s putting pressure on an already-overworked D Corps.

I wish there was room in the NHL for all the good stuff you mention, because it’s undoubtedly true..but there ain’t..

I both agree, and disagree...

I agree that the whining has been done to the Nth degree, and I disagree that he is not an NHL caliber D man. Scott has been getting more and more ice time as the season progresses, as are some of the NKOTB. ( I’m not sure if making a fucking new kids reference destroys ANY theoretical respect I might have theoretically had around here…) All in all, I like our players.

I agree with this...

……. People that don’t like Scott, seemingly hate Scott for whatever reason, stop short of citing to where he loses games for the Hawks. No one to my limited knowledge has ever pointed to where he’s won games, but I do know that in the playoffs the last couple of years just the mere fact he dressed stopped some teams from getting too chippy. Plus, I’m one of those people that would reward him for working harder than everyone else. It counts, I’m sorry.

there's no debating

that hard work counts.. but you still can’t justify a spot in the D Corps of an NHL team based on it… if that’s the sole criterion. And I don’t hate him.. I like the guy. Just don’t want him on my team, thanks.

and here's something that bugs me

When the end of season approaches, you can almost guarantee that we’ll be seeing less and less of John Scott when the games start to matter more. Until then quit yer bitchin’. Please.

Because the points don’t matter now? I believe they’ll still be counted come the end of the season and you know what? I’d rather have a big fat X next to our name on the standings come March rather than be scrabbling for points while keeping an eye on how other teams are doing.. with or without Big John..

enough of the niceties: time for the eye-gouging..

by mightymike D on Nov 20, 2011 7:28 AM CST reply actions

True

But the beginning of the season is about figuring out what you’ve got, what works, and how each part works. Yes, two points now are two points later, I understand that, but If you lose an extra game or two due to trying out new pieces, motivating players, figuring out what you have etc., that’s just the way it is and every team in the NHL has to go through that.

What I’m saying, is that when the season has progressed to the point where you can project certain things such as “we need to win 10 of our next 15 to grab X spot in the standings,” those are the games where you sit Scott to win because your eyes are on the goal, and you need to get it done. That’s when the games start to “matter” to the team, even though in the standings they are worth the same amount of points as games during this point in the season.

Damn it! I need another beer!

by HumanAfterAll on Nov 21, 2011 1:28 AM CST up reply actions

Isn't that what the pre-season is for?

Once the regular season starts a game on Oct. 7 is worth just as many points as April 7th and regardless of how hard he works, I want guys out there who can play. John Scott can’t. It’s that simple. The guy is a pylon on defense and while he has slightly improved this year, the theory that he detracts guys from taking liberties with our players is absurd. If he is out there for protection then he needs to start protecting. I haven’t seen Scott punish an opponent for taking liberties with Kane et al. But I can definitely show you a clip from a game last week where he was undressed in his zone leading to a goal. Hard work is great and I think it is something applied by most players who wear an NHL sweater (you don’t get there by sitting on the couch) but to give a guy a roster spot because he tries is foolish and will lead to more problems because of the burden he puts on his teammates ice time.

That’s fine. This isn’t pee wee though. Work as hard as you want, Q and company should be trying to win a cup and John Scott sucking yet working hard doesn’t exactly get us there does it?

If John Scott had any scruples at all, he would resign and forfeit his salary because he sure as hell doesn’t earn it on the ice.

Yes

I know this isn’t peewee, and I know this isn’t mites, and I know that in the words of ChicagoNativeSon “It’s about winning, not appeasing some kid’s parents.”

But keep in mind, these are still people like you and me, just people who happen to be really good at hockey. Underneath the salaries and the money, underneath the media and the hype you have 30 or so individual beings who are susceptible to mental variables. A good hockey player has to have a healthy head and a healthy mentality, and that is just as important, if not more important than their talent. How many players are in the Hawks organization under the age of 25? I mean c’mon those are still pretty much freakin’ kids. They’ve got agents to deal with the money and politics of hockey, they just want to play and win.

They’ll understand when they aren’t the best option for the team.

They’ll also get down on themselves when they can’t figure out what the hell they have to do to just get a shot to be an irrelevant piece of the puzzle on the ice. You could be wasting great talent, and have no idea it even exists when this mentality creeps into peoples’ heads.

At least, by Quenneville playing John Scott because he busts his ass he’s showing the guys the effort it takes for them to get noticed.

Nope, you're not trolling. Nope, not at all.

And PLEASE point out where I belittled a persons beliefs or choice of words? All I did was quote and point out the wild and condescending assumptions/suggestions that HAA wrote.

Was I the one who said everyone else’s point of view was oblivious? Was I the one who suggested I somehow mysteriously knew that superstarX was lollygagging in practice? Was I the one who made fun of someone who is disabled? Was I the one who stated others need to quit their bitching? No, I wasn’t. I just pointed them out.

So basically, burpchelischili was left with a decision: Does he call out the person who did write these things, or does he call out CNS who called out the poster for things that in the past burp himself has objected to (belittling of and/or suppression of opinions, telling people what they can or cannot discuss, making fun of the disabled, etc) because CNS’s “supercilious ego-maniacal attitude pisses him the fuck off”?

Decisions… Decisions…

So, Hockey is out then?
How’s that mouse? Feeding it lots of cheese?

Implying that he/she is alone in his/her opinion…

I guess you’ve been spending quite a bit of time at Johnny’s to know this, eh? Please keep us posted.
You are assuming that they are bad at Hockey, perhaps they tried to join a team for the Beer Olympics, trained their ass off and just wasn’t good enough to make the team. They got cut because some slack-jawed jerk that could open his throat screwed around during training, then walked in and poured a pitcher down in 1.3 seconds on the last day of tryouts and took the last roster spot. Your assumption, to me, was a tad bit ego-maniacal. Then there is calling me part of your “private troll army” Really?
Like you’re doing, right? I enjoy the assumption that your position is the right one and that you stand alone against the tyranny of the spectrum of opinions that actually exist. Who’s oblivious?
You implied that HHA was oblivious, this is the part that seemed supercilious to me.
Read my first post, and you will see that I agreed with part of his diatribe, and disagreed with another part.

I completely ignored the part about his cousin, partially because he was saying it about a member of his family, (I may beat the holy hell out of my brother, but I will in turn beat the holy hell out of anyone picking on my brother.) and partially because it is a fan post, not a comment on the main. The owners of the website have changed thunderdome from the main threads to fan posts and fan shots.

As to your last paragraph… Are you talking to me? Or, are you talking to your personal army? I said that your attitude pisses me off at times, sometimes it doesn’t. Sometimes it ranges into assholeish. Sometimes it veers into funnyish. This time it annoyed me just enough that it made you seem jerkish.

In closing, I am glad that I have allowed you the opportunity to have a new catch phrase… Use it well.

/completely and udderly confused

“Mouse in your pocket” meant that he was lumping all opinions into one, not that HAA was necessarily alone in their opinion. But feel free to alter…

“Johnny’s” refers to the fact that HAA apparently has knowledge of a Blackhawk who is slacking at practice. I have no idea where your interpretation comes from.

And again, HAA stated that our POV’s were “oblivious.” I implied that he was therefore oblivious to a “spectrum of opinions that actually exist.” But feel free to revise…

Yes, ignore ignorance when convenient.

Thanks for proving my point. Like I said, decisions, decisions…

by ChicagoNativeSon on Nov 21, 2011 12:56 PM CST up reply actions

I believe it, you seem cows belly confused. I am utterly confused as well.

The Mouse statement can be read either way, re-read it without knowing what you meant when you stated it, you will might see what I mean.

The Johnnys statement appears to be a personal statement and not about the Hawks practice. Again, re-read with no knowledge of your thinking while typing and you should see it. Re-reading with your thoughts make it a completely different statement, but your thoughts were not included in the statement.

The Oblivious statement was in regards to what he considered an oblivious segment of fans, (at least that’s how I read it) If you feel that applies to your position… Well, feel free to revise.

It was not an ignore when convenient thing, but more that commenting on it would likely deviate the conversation at hand, and would likely devolve the conversation to a place that I would rather not go. Here we go anyway… I have two brothers and a sister that were adopted by my parents. They can not function in society. Their parents were brother and sister, and the resulting problems that the kids have are why there are rules about things like that. Yes, I have gotten into horrendous fights about peoples reactions to them, and spent no little time having conversations with hardened criminals while waiting for bail to be set. My parents eventually told me to let the little one time things slide, and stand up when it is too much. I apologize to you CNS that I did not immediately jump down HAAs throat, but I still follow Dads rules. It was a one time thing. If it kept going I would have stood up and said something.

The meaning behind your words are not always as readily apparent to others as they are to you when you type them. I have been guilty of it as well, and have readily apologized when I was in the wrong. You can be as revisionist as anyone else at times, and coming back and saying “But I meant it like this” is great, but it still scanned differently on first reading.

Lastly, I don’t get the final line. Which point was proven?

There is a problem with outliving your enemies, it usually means that you have outlived your friends as well...

OK now...

I’m not a writer, or a comedian, sorry that I touched you a little too close to your sensitive spot, so try to bully me outta here, do whatever it is that makes you feel good.

But you sure do come off as an ego-maniacal, indirect yet purely intentionally aggressive ass hole. I tried to add a little humor the way I know how, and have a little edge that might be interesting for people to read, and you just completely storm in here trying to belittle me, then act like you have no idea what we’re talking about. Sorry I wasn’t politically correct, but a simple “try to tone it down a touch” would have done just fine.

Instead you have to stomp your foot like Schwartz after the Lions lose to the 49ers, and throw a writer’s tantrum to assert your authority because your 13000 posts opposed to my 50 make you the sheriff around here or something? Am I shitting in your house? Is that what’s going on? Anyway, if you really can’t see how your post was interpreted as personally attacking, than damn… I’ll just keep my mouth shut because I don’t want to offend people more than I already have by putting my opinion of what you must be into one word that I’ve already regretfully used.

However, it is pretty clear that you aren’t that one word, which is why you playing dumb to your own comments is just that much more fuel to the you’re an egotistical asshole fire. I interpreted your comments the same way that burpchelischili did, and it’s obvious why. Your comments are the only ones on this whole thread that I’ve felt personally attacked by, and if your rebuttal’s feed your god complex and that’s why you do it, than I feel sorry for you. What happened, did you get dumped by some love of your life in a well written, extremely painful breakup note or something? Christ. You even take jabs at that guy in your responses to other people’s comments just because he is the one guy in the whole world who actually defended me. Of course you have no idea what I’m talking about though… you’re confused, right?

On the other hand, if it wasn’t for your narcissistic jabs spattering this thread, it probably wouldn’t have been viewed by half as many people, so I suppose I should thank you, because all I really wanted was for some people to think about what’s going on before calling for Q’s head on a platter for playing some guy who doesn’t factor into the Hawks outcomes at all early on in the season.

Now, I’m sure you’re going to sit at your keyboard for who knows how long thinking of some smart ass response to this, going over every sentence of mine to try to push me down even further, so go ahead, have at it. I’m done being personal, and I’m sure you are too because you never started, right? Riiiiight. On to hockey and John Scott in my next comment.

Let's see Lance...

I called you out a couple of weeks ago for being a passive-aggressive antagonist who only piles on when you have group support and then runs and hides with comments like “Am I not entitled to my opinion??” (and it’s not just me you do it to, but since you’re one of the “cool kids” your personal attacks and antagonism goes unchecked)

That’s DEFINITELY NOT what’s happening here, now is it?

I didn’t react until you had being doing it to me for months. And then others, apparently oblivious to it, felt it was cool to ironically call me a “fucking asshole” and “drunken uncle” in defense of me calling you out. Hmmm, that type of irony has never happened before. (right, burp?).

So in a nutshell, I come here to talk HOCKEY. I didn’t launch an ad hominem attack on anyone here, I used someone’s own quotes to refute their post. Apparently I was too hard on the beaver though, and since it’s me, “Hey, it’s open season everyone!” And SURPRISE! Guess who shows up, proving my previous call out?

This is a fucking hockey blog, not 4chan. So the question is, “Are you here to talk hockey Lance, or are you here to post photos of kitties, talk OT about fantasy films, and antagonize?”

(feel free to follow up with another defensive comment. May I suggest something like, “You think it’s all about you CNS. You’re an egomaniac. Poor me!” Or maybe you can actually man up and just admit “Hey, I just don’t like you so I troll you.” Naw…)

Can you (or anyone else) give me examples of these months-worth of personal attacks?

I can recall one time a few months ago when I may have called you an asshole when you were being an asshole. After that, I honestly don’t know what you’re talking about. (Unless you don’t want to talk about that anymore and want to go back to hockey, then by all means) If you would prefer, you can email me (email’s on my profile) so we’re not distracting from HAA’s fanpost anymore and going OT.

Ya know burp

at least Lance gave me a mature response and offered a private avenue to resolve the issue, and I truly respect that.

I gave HAA a less biting, long-winded, and IMO, fair, response, but he instead chose to ignore actual debate and latch on to the ad hominem attack that you started and have fostered.

So, what’s you’re fucking excuse? Did I personally insult you somewhere? Ever? But you really are having a fun little power trip, aren’t you?

Basically, because you don’t like my commenting style, I’m fair game to continually insult? And due to an admitted lack of reading comprehension on your part, personal attacks (and retard jokes – as long as they’re about “family.” (Ha ha. Those are always funny)) are fair game? Gotcha. Irony at it’s finest.

Pretty sad spectacle, but everyone just grabs their popcorn, or looks the other way. I’d really like to know the awful atrocities I’ve committed here at SCH to amass these all too common attacks?

And please, in your spare time (since I know you’ve got it), feel free to point out these common examples of my supercilious ego-maniacal attitude or belittling of a person since my first months on SCH. I can readily admit that too often I grabbed the nearest soapbox when I was new to this site/internet blogging. It was naivety on my part and I’ve since tried to move past that. I barely even post photoshops here anymore since I even got called out for it.

I constantly attempt to, and pretty much always do, keep it to hockey, but some people just can’t seem to let it go. You don’t like my “attitude”?? Fuck you and grow up.

And aren’t you the one who keeps commenting, “Can we get back to hockey??” More irony.

I hope certainly your personal insults have made your time here more enjoyable.

The room is all yours…

How’s that mouse? Feeding it lots of cheese?

Not sure what that means, and not sure that I care.

Like you’re doing, right? I enjoy the assumption that your position is the right one and that you stand alone against the tyranny of the spectrum of opinions that actually exist. Who’s oblivious? I particularly enjoyed this pearl…

No, not quite what I’m doing. I don’t have an army of minions following my posts. I’m aware that nobody knows who I am, or gives a shit who I am. I’m actually surprised that this post got more than 2 people to even comment on it. I’m simply trying to ask people to stop bitching about John Scott and using him on the ice to justify calling Q an incompetent disaster of a coach. What I’m saying is that NOBODY KNOWS EXACTLY WHY Q IS PLAYING SCOTT!! But I can guarantee that Q can see he sucks! There is no way in hell Q thinks that John Scott is a savvy defenseman, and it pisses me off when people try to pass off Q as an incompetent fuck for playing Scott when their justification is simply Scott sucks. Nobody has any idea what’s going on behind the scenes. The shit Q feeds the media isn’t for us people who know a thing or two about hockey, but for the millions who don’t and see John Scott as the end all tough guy that the Hawks need to put up with douchebags like the Canucks.

guess you’ve been spending quite a bit of time at Johnny’s to know this, eh? Please keep us posted.

And FYI, this is the NHL, not the mites. It’s about winning, not appeasing some kid’s parents.

Actually, I am playing some not-so-very-competitive hockey at the moment (not Johnny’s), and I enjoy it. Thanks.

But, I have also played some very competitive hockey in the past, and been on both the struggling for a bottom role side of things, and the nice and secure on the top line side of things. And I can tell you for a fact, that knowing your coach is willing to give you a chance because you bust your ass, or knowing you can bust your ass, and still not have a chance, makes a big freakin’ difference in the way you play your game.

And the irony of this after joking about a "literally" semi-retarded person? Really? I guess the fact that they’re "literally" semi-retarded makes it better, not worse, amiright?

Uh… yeah I guess because it’s not a joke. He’s slightly retarded, and usually pretty drunk. Sad yes, but why pretend it’s not how it is? Why not have fun with it? What should I do, just feel really bad for him? If he can joke about it, I can joke about it. But if it makes you feel better to put me in my place about something you aren’t even a part of, then fine. Feel good.

And until then, quit yours too? Deal?

No. Not a deal.

I don’t come on here after every game and bitch about you guys bitching about Q for playing John Scott. I said one thing once because damn, every game that Scott plays it’s like every blog writer in Chicago wants all Hawks fans to get outraged that he’s playing Scott, and start spreading the word about it or something, and they don’t (nor do I) know the exact reason why Scott’s even playing. There is much more to it than Q is an incompetent jag, and we don’t exactly know what it is.

And Sorry, but I’m not trying to pick on this blog or anything. I love SCH, I think its great, and the Committed Indian is great too. I posted here because this is by far the most popular, and also the most responsible for persuading fans to follow one view or another. I just think it would be much better if we would leave the Q sucks because John Scott sucks out of it, because it really is not warranted.

I really enjoyed your Bufflin avatar though. Awesome!

Damn right you enjoyed my “Bufflin” avatar.

I enjoyed the… green background behind your post… smartass.

Damn it! I need another beer!

by HumanAfterAll on Nov 21, 2011 1:18 AM CST up reply actions

OK, here's my deal HAA

First, this regarding joking about your cousin and then back to Scott. I too have a cousin who is mentally retarded. My best friend’s brother was too (he died this year due to the often physically degenerative nature of the disease). I’m not trying "to put [you] in [your] place about something [I’m not] even a part of. I have very real, lifelong experience with the disease.

It’s just wrong, flat-out 100% wrong, to suggest like you did in your first paragraph that something is so obvious that even a semi-retarded person can see it. I’m not sure I should have to explain this. But let me state that often their insights and abilities are beyond brilliant, so to make the “so easy a caveman can do it” connection isn’t even applicable. And it has nothing to do with your personal experiences with your cousin. You’re on a public forum.

John Scott: As I pointed out above, you lump EVERYONE else into one category and then state that their points of view are “oblivious.” And then you go on to make further assumptions – and use these assumptions to suggest that you instead know what’s actually going on.

Everyone here has a right to bitch about / discuss whatever hockey player or topic they want. Telling people to quit their bitching because you have the answer. Um, well, I’m assuming some people, including me, don’t find your answer any more satisfying then our own valid opinions.

And multiple times you have supported playing Scott with claims like this:

What I’m saying, is that when the season has progressed to the point where you can project certain things such as "we need to win 10 of our next 15 to grab X spot in the standings," those are the games where you sit Scott to win because your eyes are on the goal, and you need to get it done. That’s when the games start to "matter" to the team, even though in the standings they are worth the same amount of points as games during this point in the season.
You pointed out the flaw in your reasoning in your own statement. 2 points today is equal to 2 point on the last day of the season. Teams don’t, and can’t, just “turn it on” when necessary, especially later in the season when just about every other team is also fighting for a playoff spot or seed.

It’s easy to assume what everyone else’s reasoning is, but different opinions on John Scott do exist. If you’re interested in reading mine, feel free to click here.

And yes, I can be a smartass. When you set the tone with an off color attempt at humor like you did, that also affects how the remainder of your article is digested. Might I suggest leaving stuff like that out in the future?

by ChicagoNativeSon on Nov 21, 2011 10:01 AM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Oh, and "Got a mouse in your pocket?"

It’s a humorous rebuttal when someone uses the term “we” instead of “I” or makes assumptions for a group such as you did when you stated, “The one thing that all these people also seem to think…” Just because a handful or two enjoy complaining about Q (or any other topic) doesn’t necessarily make it the norm, although it might be.

+1 on CNS here

(particularly the ’Smartass bit :p)

But seriously.. HAA: I respect your opinion, and, as I mentioned earlier, I agree with the basic sentiment, just don’t agree with applying it to the Chicago Blackhawks.. and I’m glad you came back here to fight your corner unlike a certain other Fanposter.. you’ll always be welcome on the threads where the real discussions happen.
One last thing though, and this ties back in with CNS, it’s partly about your language..: in this part of the world “Retarded” is an offensive term, full stop (Period for the Norteamericanos) I too have a brother with ‘Learning Problems’.. and ‘Emotional Disabilities’.. but if anyone called him a ‘Retard’ in my presence… well, they’d need Duncan Keith’s dentist.. and I’m a pacifist!

that last

maybe comes off a bit aggressive… not meant that way..
It’s just that we don’t say “Retarded” at all here unless we’re being offensive. And I soul add, this is the brother who is a Ducks Fan… which is clear proof of a ‘Learning Disability’ if ever there was…

"Learning disability" is a good all-encompassing term

Although when referring to the specific disability that many are born with, I’m not aware of another layman’s term other than “mentality retarded.”

by ChicagoNativeSon on Nov 21, 2011 10:53 AM CST up reply actions

I agree the term "mentally retarded" is often used as an offensive term

and can be off-putting. And calling someone a “retard” is obviously meant to be offensive. But “mentally retarded” is still the official medical term as far as I know here in the US.

I’ve actually researched to find other more PC terms, but I personally find “mentally handicapped” and “mentally disabled” (terms that I have seen used) as even more offensive. “Disabled” for example implies “doesn’t work,” whereas “retarded” in its true sense means “stunted.”

by ChicagoNativeSon on Nov 21, 2011 10:48 AM CST up reply actions

oh, I know..

and I think (Hope) I explained it already… it’s definitely taboo here.. as are the other terms you mention. and I agree that ‘Retarded’ in its original usage is correct.. but its been a case where the abusive use has superceded the legitimate usage. And, for the record, I’m not talking about Down’s Syndrome.. my brother has what I described earlier.. relatively mild problems with stuff we all take for granted..

Bu anyway.. this ain’t talk for a Hockey Blog…. that’s what e-mails are for…

enough of the niceties: time for the eye-gouging..
and yes, I probably *should* be asleep right now!

The "correct" PC term...

My sister is a Special Ed teacher for elementary school aged kids most with severe and profound disabilities and it seems like every other week there is a new PC term for having mental or physical disabilities. They have ranged from “differently abled” to being “with” whatever disability (ie he is with down syndrome) to “gifted” to “special needs” but I think most if not all would agree that calling someone a retard is going to be seen as offensive even if he is related to you. And through all this seriousness I still think of “Something About Mary”, “I love to watch those goofy bastards.”

Poster's response to the responses.

Thanks for taking the time to view my post everybody. And thanks for commenting with your opinion on the matter.

First off, I would like to apologize to anybody who was offended by my language when referring to my family. I know how it is with my family, we’re loose about it and don’t get offended by the R word, but I know that it is insensitive, and when posting on a public forum I should keep that in mind, and I will. I wasn’t thinking much about that particular sentence, so once again, I didn’t mean anything by it, my apologies.

Now. On to John Scott.

I can think of some plays that end up with John Scott tripping over his own jock strap, and the puck in the Hawks goal. Sure. I can also think of a few nice plays he’s made, (he has had a few beautiful stretch passes here and there) but nobody talks about those, and I understand why. They are totally overshadowed by the other 99% of the time he’s on the ice, which is about 0.99% of the game. I understand the reason for concern when he’s playing. Our guys get worn out, he’s a liability, and doesn’t add much.

However, I can think of plenty of times Leddy hit the panic button as if John Scott was about to punch him in the face if he didn’t blindly throw the puck to the other team, I can think of plays that ended up with Keith and Seabrook looking for their jock straps in each other’s pants too, and those are far and away our two best players on the back end.

What I’m saying is it happens to everybody. If Scott were out there against talent players it would happen to him more, yes. And what I’m trying to say is that everybody can see that Scott’s not good, and I guarantee that Quenneville can too. I can’t tell you for sure why Q plays Scott, but there is definitely more to it than Q thinks he’s good and is helping the team. Now I’m no NHL coach, but Q is and has been. I have a feeling that he has a reason for playing Scott, and although we don’t know what it is, I don’t understand what the huge problem with it is, especially when he’s actually playing decent 3rd pair d minutes against the worst players on the other team where he is in matter of fact, not as huge of a liability as everybody makes him out to be.

I’m just sick of hearing all the “what the hell, Q is an idiot, Q is incompetent, Q this Q that” all because of John Scott. After we won the cup everybody was on their knees for the guy, and he’s not doing anything differently with how he approaches the game.

If you’re going to complain about Q, there are several fine arguments. For one, I feel that when he switches up the lines every other shift, its hard for people to build chemistry with one another. Just because there aren’t immediate results doesn’t mean that there can’t ever be. When we won the cup, we had a team of guys who had been playing together so long that they all had some chemistry with each other, because they had gone through 2-3 seasons mixing it up with everybody. Since we’ve won the cup though, we’ve had new counterparts each season, and everybody is playing with unfamiliar faces, and I believe they need a little time to gel before you scramble them again.

And in terms of performance, sure Scott’s bad, but I was never under the impression that he was good. What the HELL happened to Hjammer? Is it me, or is he a $3.5 million dollar invisible man? Most I’ve noticed him was when I’m watching replays of goals, and he’s standing in one place spinning in circles trying to decide what guy he should cover. At least he hasn’t shot the puck over the glass from his own zone every other game like he did last year.. that’s a plus, I guess.

Anyway, just my thoughts.

Damn it! I need another beer!

by HumanAfterAll on Nov 21, 2011 7:13 PM CST reply actions

You make some good points.

I’m not a big fan of Scott, and I don’t think you are either. I get that you’re just pointing out that he’s not the anti-Christ of hockey.

With respect to Scott making some stretch passes, I know I and some others have given him credit for hitting those tape to tape passes on occasion. Your point about us criticizing Q seems to imply that Scott is the only thing of which people are critical. However, I think Q is routinely criticized for the line shuffles, the poor on the fly line changes, and sometimes getting overly matchy-uppy with his lines.

I’d say that a lot of people, myself included, have seen improvement in Scott’s play over last season. I used to see him play for Michigan Tech and he’s far and away better today. However, that doesn’t alter the fact that the Hawks would be be much better if he were in the press box and letting someone more competent play. You suggest that Q is coach and we should have faith in him but what fun is that as a sports fan?

Anyway, that’s all I’ve got to say about that.

Thank you, sir! May I have another?

by Badgerdano on Nov 21, 2011 9:31 PM CST up reply actions

True

I don’t think he’s very good, but it could be worse. He’s got a long ass reach, can keep people to the outside, and makes some nice passes. I do think he isn’t very good, but in all reality, you are right, he’s not as bad as you’d think based on the way he’s talked about. I don’t really mind him being out there, but when Seabs comes back I’d like to see Lepisto in Scott’s place a little more frequently. I think he’s a pretty good skater, makes some mistakes, but fits into the Hawks game plan a little more. At the moment, I’m not sure what they’re game plan is going to be though, because it obviously wasn’t working for the last few.

Damn it! I need another beer!

Yup,
