Everything Except What Matters: Hawks 0 - Sharks 1
I didn't check the comments or reactions much when I got home last night as it was far too late. I can't imagine there was too much ranting and raving and all the rest, at least from those not associated with the 300 Level. While losing three in a row just plain sucks, and getting shut out at the Tank isn't much better, I don't know what it is I'm supposed to complain about here. Far and away the best defensive effort of the season, with the only blemish coming on a bad bounce of a draw lost by Jonathan Toews. These aren't occurrences that we should worry about happening with any regularity. Disciplined, determined, and dogged (just needed another d-word there), the Hawks nullified a Western Conference Power that had been pouring in goals of late. I can't recall a big save Corey Crawford had to make.
And yet, it goes down as a loss. But the Hawks aren't going to have trouble scoring that often, I don't think. On another night, Hossa buries his two prime chances and Dave Bolland doesn't miss an open net. Games between teams this high up the food chain will always be tight. If the Hawks replicate that defensive urgency and discipline on a majority of nights, they'll be raising sticks in the air at the final horn far more often than they'll watch someone else do it.
-If there's one complaint to be made, it's that of his 34 saves Antti Niemi didn't have to work all that hard for them. Once again net presence was a problem for the Hawks. If only there was someone on this roster who's made a living for over a decade being around the net who could be put on one of the Hawks top two lines...
-Michael Frolik returned and looked active, but his "Smash TV" method of shot selection is getting old. While Eddie O likes to bleat on about it never being a bad play to put the puck on net, that's simply not true. While nothing can go terribly wrong with a shot, it can also end your offensive pressure in a hurry, say when you fire one from below the circles and against the boards (unless you've got someone crashing the crease and can cause a rebound, but I'm not convinced Fro calculates these things before launching).
-Noticed Bolland during a game. That hasn't happened recently. Sadly, when everyone noticed him it was for the wrong reasons.
-The Hawks 4th line is still struggling. We've been over how Bruno is an odd fit down there. And while I haven't hesitated to sing Marcus Kruger's praises this year, I think he's been very good, the Hawks have to decide what he's going to do on that line. Part of that unit's struggles is Kruger still being capable of being overpowered physically. So if he can't hang on a physical shift, and he's not scoring (which he really isn't, though that can be chalked up to linemates I suppose) what do they want out of this line?
-Oh right, the power play can still be a clusterfuck. Was that Montador as a forward and Bolland at a point on the second unit? I'm beginning to think the running of this power play is a high concept album on par with Tarkus and I'll just never understand it.
-Kane had seven shots as opposed to three in all of Alberta. More, please.
1-3 looks ugly. But the Ducks are just a mess right now, and the Kings haven't exactly lit the Staples Center on fire, with most of their wins coming on the road. We would have taken 3-3 before it started. Play like that twice more and they'll have it.

Tarkus you say?
that’s a hilarious analogy – Zep’s “Presence” also would’ve sufficed. Yeah, too bad about the final score, but they seem to have righted themselves, and that can only lead to good things down the road.
hell...the PP is high concept like Spartacus by Triumvirate
Mouse in the lightbulb album cover and everything
Fighting stupidity since 1958 (its a much bigger project than originally envisioned).

My brother
played the crap out of that record. It still makes me run from the room screaming.
It's on, bitches.
Tweeping as @ehirtens
Bickell's breakaway
… he should have wristed something from above the circles, that’s his bread and butter. What the hell was that, Bickell skaiting toward the crease? How weird.
He’s deserved the fury of late … but credit where credit’s due, he played really well last night.

It looked bad, but only because Niemi didn’t shift sideways and open up two-thirds of the net.

"If only there was someone on this roster who's made a living for over a decade being around the net who could be put on one of the Hawks top two lines..."
Between the odd line choices and continuing to suit up John Scott, I really have to wonder what has happened to Q. Great coach with a great record, but what in the world is he thinking these days? What is it that he sees in these players that is invisible to the rest of us during games?
I swear, if I had the money, I would buy a full page ad in the Trib and do a public “Letter to Q and Stan” thing, just to get the freaking press coverage to actually make Q defend his roster decisions right now. Sam, you guys should have taken the press passes when they were offered so you could ask the hard questions. I’m not on the ledge and I’m not hating on Q, but how can you have so much talent on this team and not know how to use it? It is simply infuriating.
Thank you Boston for saving us from a dreadful summer! Now, GO HAWKS!!!
When have you ever heard Q respond with substance
and candor to any probing question? He could give his usual vague nonanswers to Sam as easily as he does to Kuc, et al. Q is and always will be the kind who keeps his cards as hidden as he can. We are left to speculate, which is part of the reason we are on message boards

It IS infuriating
It’s infuriating to never know which Hawks team is going to show up-I’m tired of hearing about how they have the swagger back (in Toews’ words) and then go out and get thoroughly humiliated by two mediocre teams.
The talent is there but there’s something wrong and it’s getting harder and harder for me to look past the head coach.
by bluekoolaide on Nov 24, 2011 1:37 PM CST up reply actions
I don't know that they were humiliated by Calgary
And Edmo isn’t a mediocre team. They have 2 number 1 overall picks on one line and a Canadian Juniors legend in Eberle.

Give the John Scott stuff a rest
Anybody who knows and understands hockey will admit that Scott has been serviceable as the # 6 defenseman. Certainly has done a better job than O’Donnell, who has no wheels left and absolutely cannot clear the puck.
Q is doing a fine job for the most part. His challenge is finding a place to fit Sharp into the mix given Kane’s new role. And overcoming a full blown crisis at LW. Q is at the point where he needs the General Manager to provide an assist or two.
Oh c'mon guys, it's so simple, maybe you need a refresher course. It's ALL ball bearings these days.

Some truth but OD at least eats up more minutes. Scott has improved, but he’s not a guy i want playing when we are playing the quicker teams in the league, when Lepisto is also playing and the team is on the road.

Sadly there was much
weeping and gnashing of teeth here last night.. and people yelling at those weeping & gnashing..
But you’re 100% correct: that was a vastly improved Hawks performance against many (most?) critic’s pre-season pick for Cup winners.. and it was an excellent game of Hockey.. the Hawks looked sharp and mean and but for the odd bounce here, the odd whiff/miss there we would have won.
If we replicate that sort of game we’ll come out even on this trip.. the ’Hawks had heart back last night,.
enough of the niceties: time for the eye-gouging..
and yes, I probably *should* be asleep right now!
Exactly
Hawks bring that effort and some solid net presence, they will be fine most nights.

Not much to complain about
(well, except for losing my job as of this coming Friday, but that’s not relevant here . . .)
Seemed like a seriously solid game. I’m-Marian-Hossa-and-you’re-not had a couple of shots that, on a different night, would have seen twine. Duncs was back on his game. Everyone showed up to play. I can live with that. I’d prefer the two points, of course.
I'm sorry to hear about your job =(
and agree with the rest!

There's no "I" in Team
Bottom line, this team needs to get more and consistently more out of the following…
- Sharp (he has been putrid other than feeding off the wondrous talent of Kane)
- Stalberg (it’s neat and all to skate fast and circle the net more times than Dale Earnhardt, but lets actually DO something when you’ve been handed the unearned gift of top 6 pairing)
- Hjalmarsson (being paid a lot of mone to do more than what’s being delivered at the blue line)
- Bickell (needs to go bye-bye)
- Frolik (I like him, but by the same token there has to be SOME offensive creation)
- Montador (worst thing to happen was scoring a few goals…he’s in the doghouse for a reason and that reason is he started to think he is Brian Campbell, which he is not)
- Brunette (counted upon to be the top LW and can’t even fulfill the duties of the 4th line)
- Stan Bowman (he took some low risk flyers on veterans that are and are not working out….he needs to make adjustments right now because this team should be able to compete for the Western Conference Title otherwise…get to work Stan….start by jettisoning Bickell and calling up Morin)
Oh c'mon guys, it's so simple, maybe you need a refresher course. It's ALL ball bearings these days.
As Mr. Sloan always says,
there is no “I” in team, but there is an “I” in pie. And there’s an “I” in meat pie. Anagram of meat is team… I don’t know what he’s talking about.
But anyway, Montador is in the doghouse?

i thought 13mins was sort of the range he had been playing in?
maybe more when OD was out. Can’t confirm that though, I haven’t been checking. In a tight game though, obvs. Keith its going to eat all the minutes.

Montador is definitely in the doghouse
And for good reason. He is not fulfilling the role he is here to fulfill, and it has been grossly magnified via the loss of Seabrook. All Montador needs to do is religiously work his ass off at the blue line and look for the breaking LW or RW. That and dig out the puck on the boards. He’s playing like he wants to be Paul Coffey right now. Needs to stop that shit in a hurry. This team doesn’t have the luxury of Montador getting too big for his britches. He’s got to give this team 15 minutes of reliable blueline work a night.

Nice Shaun of the Dead reference

"Terry's down, oh my! Van Persie all by himself now, around Cech, and that'll do it!"
He had to have a berth or he couldn't get to sea.
I had another look and i had a cup of tea and a butter pie
(the butter wouldn’t melt so i put it in the pie)
Thank you, sir! May I have another?
Your posting is painful and difficult to read
Exactly what we need bring up another youngster who has the potential of being physically beaten.
I agree with you that Bickell’s role should be marginalized but there’s a fairly well known AHL to NHL point projection.
Morin has scored 8 AHL points in 15 AHL games so far.
8 * .43 = 3.44 (between 3-4 points). He’s getting top 6 time in Rockford. Morin simply isn’t ready for full time NHL duty. Hjalmarsson has been one of our better Defensive defensemen.
He’s been on the ice against more of the quality competition (-.145 QUALCOMP) and has a 1.77 CORSI rel QOC. Which is CORSI controlling for the competion on the ice. For the record, that puts him 6th among Dmen with 10 or more GP. He’s not going to ever be a point scoring dmen but for the quality defense he’s played, he’s worth the 3.5 cap hit.
