Got Me A Ride And A Reason To Ignore You - Hawks 6, Ducks 5
If it's at all possible for a November afternoon game against the Ducks to stand as a watershed performance, what was witnessed this afternoon certainly has the potential to. After spotting the Ducks 2 goals in the early going, the Hawks began to claw back and fire away, with the levee finally breaking early in the third. Leading the way was Jonathan Toews, whose 2 goal, 3 assist afternoon was accentuated by the fact that 4 of those points came in the first half of the third, where Toews factored in on every goal, putting the Hawks up 2 until the waning seconds, where the Ducks pulled back to within one, but it ended up being for naught. Hawks 6, Ducks 5. Re-headed, gravy-drenched bullets, coming right up.
- As stated above, Jonathan Toews' third period was something else, where he did his best impersonation of the San Andreas Fault with how much devastation he inflicted on Orange County. His will was perfectly illustrated on the Hawks' last power play, where the play was sustained in the Ducks end and Toews took a pounding and lost his helmet, only to go right back to the front of the net to score his second of the game, and what would end up being the game-winner. Again, it was only the Ducks, but that's about as inspired a performance from a captain as anyone could ask for, and just another bit of evidence speaking to how lucky we are as fans to get to watch 19 will a team to 2 points.
- Oh yeah, that Patrick Sharp guy had a pretty alright game too.
- On the other side of the coin, Brent Seabrook didn't look all that fantastic in his first game in almost 2 weeks. Q kept his ice time to a minimum, with only 21:27 played, and only seeing power play time when the Hawks were protecting a late lead. Seabrook was caught woefully out of position on Bobby Ryan's second goal, where he was above the rings when the goal mouth pass was made. The Hawks will need him to rediscover his game soon if the ship is going to be fully righted.
- Even in spite of Seabrook's return and no John Scott in the lineup (mercifully), Duncan Keith still skated a team high 29:11. That number has to come down. Fortunately, for the last 40-45 minutes of the game, we got to see Norris-caliber Keith and not '10-'11 turnover machine Keith. I don't know about anyone else, but I like that version a lot better.
- Speaking of lost games, Corey Crawford has been pretty putrid for a while now with only the occasional solid performance intermingled. Crow hasn't been helped out much with spotty d-zone coverage, but there are some saves you just have to make. He's been getting beat laterally on scrambles and passes lately, so he might want to rein his aggression at the top of his crease in a little bit in order to get some confidence back. Either way, he's got to be better.
- Once again, on Dave Bolland's power play goal, we see what Andrew Brunette is capable of when utilized properly. That pass was too pretty.
- Not that any numbers are really needed to back up what the eye test revealed, but the Toews line thoroughly porked RPG at even strength. Credit Joel Quenneville for landing triple 7's with his latest spin of the line generator slot machine after swapping Sharp and Hossa between the top two lines.
- Yeah, he's really annoying and that mustache isn't doing any favors to his already odd complexion, but Teemu Selanne is really something to behold with the way he's performing at 963 years old while carrying around a colostomy bag in his equipment and using those specially made orthopedic skates to help with his gout.
- With the quick turnaround tomorrow night at Staples, for as invigorating as this win was today, it doesn't mean a goddamn thing if the Hawks don't learn from what went wrong in the early going and correct it, because the Kings are an entirely different beast. And if a hellacious performance from their lettered captaincy can't serve as a boot in the ass for everyone, there are far bigger issues at hand.

Anyone want to breakdown the ducks game for me?
I went to who I thought was a non-bias fan about it and they said “quote the ducks controlled the first 40 and the hawks got a lucky bounce to change the momentum in the 3rd”.
I have trouble believing that seeing as I looked at the boxscore and the hawks outshot the ducks 17 to 5 in the 2nd period.
The Hawks definitely had a slow start
Maybe took between 5 and 10 minutes for them to really get going. After that it seemed to be back and forth of good chances and sloppy play. In the second period we kept the ducks scoring chances down, but when we did mess up, we messed up royally and gave them really open shots on net.
And then the third happened and I guess Toews and Sharp had enough of this bullshit.
in the second period
Chicago had 17 shots, Anaheim had 5

The TOI this game for the forwards was kind of weird. I expected Bolland to be higher then Kruger, and
Toews to be higher then he was with the 3 PKs, but not the case.
Kane – 23:41
Sharp – 22:34
Hossa – 20:33
Toews – 18:57
Kruger – 17:15
Bolland – 16:23

Of course I didn't watch the game, so maybe these TOIs make complete sense in the context of how the game went

Kruger 8 for 8 at the dot
And had an entirely solid all around game. I don’t want Dream Warrior to not get his due.
Marcus Kruger? Sounds like one of them old time car horns, K-uger! K-uger!
and he solved Getzlaf which Toews was unable to do, right? definite props

Did Kruger start playing on the 3rd and Bickell on the 4th?
If so I wouldn’t mind that at all.
Looks like he did some shifts with Bolly, but otherwise centered the 4th line.

looked like Kruger/Bolland/Brunette towards the end of the third.
Kruger’s continued improvement is a big positive – I wished he would have buried that shot that went off the post. he deserves some good bounces. I’ll say it again, brunette is very clever with the puck in tight quarters.
Leddy just keeps getting better. His skating reminds me of Keiths. 29 plus minutes, nice job Duncan.
lastly, our second PP unit, which Quenville started messing with in the third, of Bolland/kruger/Brunette/Leddy/Montador continues to apply intense pressure on their opportunities. it’s working Q, don’t go thinking.
and chew bubble gum at the same time
his main weakness is gaurding the crease. He’s great at stickhandling and has such a great flow to his game when heading up ice.

but there’s still a lot of shennanigan’s taking place in front of the net. Come to think of it, other than Toews, it’s been a long time since I’ve seen someone’s helmet knocked off in the crease. I miss Kopecky – not.

Tazer's the Man
not going to let them lose their fourth straight, not on his goddamn watch. But man, I share your sentiments on Crow – his new form of aggression in setting up far in front isn’t doing him any favors right now. I understand Foley and Konroyd’s natural homerism, but everyone on that announcing team’s letting him get away with too many sloppy goals.
and we were due for some sloppy ones as well
not that I’d call them sloppy, but a lot of shots getting in via the old pinball method – deflections off skates, pads, goal posts, you name it – but we could’ve easily had a few of those against the Sharks.
I just hope they can continue to build on this win and
Toews/Sharp/etc…can sustain the energy they had tonight going forward. The two of them were beasts tonight, but they need to keep it up, along with the rest of the team.

Regarding Craw...
not sure what can be done except the team tightening up the defense. His weaknesses are starting to become glaring to me and if the team D doesn’t improve, other teams will have a somewhat easy time exploiting his bad habits.
I think Jimmy Waite has his work cut out for him.
I feel like his strategy has changed from last year
he’s uber aggressive, and his positioning seems off to me many times, which is the opposite of last year. I could be wrong though, but he just seemed more solid before.

i'm flummoxed...
4 out of 5 Duck goals were scored either in the crease or within a foot of it. Other than Ryan’s second goal on a pass through traffic, most were a result of players swatting away at loose change. Selanne’s goal was upper left hand corner and a rocket – advantage sniper on a partial screen by Correy and a slap shot from the slot. Maybe he shouldn’t have given up a rebound off of Selanne’s blast and stopped Cogliano, other than that the Hawk defenders didn’t do much to relive the pressure around the crease.
I realize I see things through rose colored glasses, so could someone point out to me the errors he made on the goals he let in?
yeah
the 3rd goal especially- I’m pretty sure it deflected off of Keith’s stick and found a spot just inside the post.
Still, so far this year, it just seems like Crow is usually the second best goalie on the ice. It kinda reminds me of the Stanley Cup season- Huey particularly, but Nemo too (tho Nemo had a nice playoff run.) Several games where the Hawks outplayed the opposition but came up short. I do’t remember feeling like this last year.
I think SCS said something along these lines in the links the other day. And while we can dissect each goal and decide it wasn’t Crow’s fault, his 2.86 GAA and .899 SV% are both good for 24th in the league among goalies with at least 10 games.
This team isn’t as good as the Stanle Cup team and can’t cover for mediocre goaltending. Crow doesn’t need to be a Vezina candidate, but I think he does need to be better than he’s been for the Hawks to have a real shot this year.

Well, at least there's (almost), only one way to go - up
i think there’s still a lot of upside and hopefully those stats will improve. I’ll admit they aren’t good, but a few games could have inflated them a touch.
Great point about the Huet/Niemi situation. More than one pundit questioned the Hawks ability to win the Cup with that tandem, including JR. it would be nice to see corey record a shot out or two. I have him on my fantasy team and he delivered in that category last year a few times.
Question – is Leddy a great liability when it comes to clearing out the crease?
goaltenders in my opinion get too much share of the blame in defeats. (Or even in wins as is the case in the last two games with Corey.) i’m wouldn’t say any of the goals Crow has let in have been soft goals – hang in there mr. Big – actually, there was one comment on Crawford yesterday that made some sense based on the eye test. I’ve noted that corey looks big in the net to me last year. (After Huet and Khabby I guess a lot of goalies would) maybe he just needs to make himself big. The last thing in the world we want is for him to start questioning everything he does though.
I’m still a bit nervous when it comes to Emery, and in a recetn correspondence with block, he said Halak and Richards have not played well
questioning everything he does
that reminds me of a quote I heard on dissecting one’s golf swing. Someone compared it to dissecting a cat. You’ll have a lot of blood and guts, but you won’t have a cat.
I feel like here, that rarely happens, especially with Crow
it often gets rationalized away (think back to SCS links post the other day). To me though, Crawford has definitely let in some soft goals, and he has changed the way he plays in net. And we are going to need those goalie wins sometimes (and/or goalies keeping us in the game), and we haven’t really gotten them yet. I think its a fair assessment to say he needs to be better.

his problems aren't just evident in todays game
I stated earlier in the season that there were worrying signs in his game despite his success at that point. He was cheating down low, which was leaving the top of the net open (I had a feeling that better teams would better expose his weaknesses). That in itself wouldn’t be a problem if he sealed the bottom of the net, but he hasn’t done a good job with that either. I’m also a bit worried with his positioning, stick handling and lateral movement. He’s not seeing the puck as well as he was last year and it shows. He’s dropping a lot of pucks he should be catching cleanly.
I think you mean Stephane Waite
he’s done a great job with rookie goaltenders; I guess we get to see what he’s like with sophomore goalies.
SCH Narc - check yo'self before you wreck yo'self.
that's right...
I was thinking of our young goaltender back around the Belfour/Hasak era.
For the first couple of weeks of the season it was not a concern
But I am not starting to worry if we are seeing the “sophomore slump” in Crawford. 2.86 GAA with a 0.899 SV% is not something to write home about! And those numbers factor in his first several games were gave up 3+ only once!

random thoughts
So I was driving back from Wisconsin today. When we got south of Milwaukee, I remembered that cars have radios these days (I don’t drive much), and flipped it on to the Hawks game. Just in time to hear the Ducks get their third. Listened from there until the end of the second, when I dropped off the rental car with the Hawks down 4-2.
When I got home I flipped on the TV and it was 6-4. In the words of the immortal Keanu Reeves – “whoa.”
Anyway, I don’t see why the Wiedeman/Murray broadcasts are more highly regarded than the Foley/Edzo calls. W/M seemed to get just as easily sidetracked – one long derailment and subsequent running joke was about what the difference is between a “gaggle” and a “gander” – and Murray has more than a bit of Santo in him. Which is fine for an analyst, I liked Santo myself, but overall I didn’t wasn’t missing the TV crew at all.
As for Crawford – I want to try out an analogy, and see what people think. It has appeared so far that Crow is consciously trying to expand his game, being more aggressive and playing further outside of the crease than he did last year. At the same time, it has seemed that his strengths last year – side to side mobility and positioning – have been suffering as a result of his new mindset.
What he reminds me of is a golfer who is changing his swing, and like a golfer there are flashes of renewed potential mixed with moments of puzzling failure. At times, his new aggressiveness makes him look pretty good. It has appeared to me this year that he’s far more solid on one-on-one breakaways, for example. But there have also been times where he looks indecisive about where he should be, and gets caught out of position.
So I guess big question is whether this is going to have a long-term payoff after the inevitable inconsistency, or if he’s lost control of the process and given himself the yips.

You stole my thunder.
I’m up in Door County, WI and had to listen to WGN radio. Those two idiots, well mostly Troy, went on and on about what group of ducks is called. TM was certain it was a gaggle. I wanted to strangle him for being so stupid and for forgetting about the game.
It was Edzo and Foley all over again. My previous experiences with them have been much better. Maybe they’ve been told to “folksy” it up for some hideous reason.
Regarding your Crow theory, I think he is trying to be more aggressive and it has paid off on the breakaways. I think though he’s too old to be trying something new. Stick to what got you here. The AHL is where he should be experimenting…
Thank you, sir! May I have another?

It's puzzling
Why would a guy who’s just finally established as a solid goalie at the NHL level, after several years of working towards that chance, choose now to try to expand his game? Looks like somebody’s given Crawford some bad advice. And I don’t feel good about Emery at all so yea it is a concern.
But meanwhile watching Kruger’s and Leddy’s games firm up step by step is a real pleasure right now.

since Turco was so good at that (well except when playing with our D), not anything else.

and Hossa also...
I noticed something that all you young hockey players can improve on by watching the Hoss. He skates harder getting back on defense than he does on offense. Watch him put his head down and bust his be the first foward back in our zone. if your a goalie, you have to appreciate that effort, one that never shows on the stat sheet. if all of our fowards were that determined to play defense, our goaltending woes might be lessened.

They’re going to fall so far back, they’re going to be unloading early it seems. Who do they have we could poach? And at what price?
They have no one of worth
They are not giving up getlaf, ryan, or perry. I don’t see them giving up fowler. Selanne maybe, but that’s his decision.

I'm curious
Even in spite of Seabrook’s return and no John Scott in the lineup (mercifully), Duncan Keith still skated a team high 29:11. That number has to come down.
When was this magical time that Dunc didn’t skate for damn near half a game? This isn’t a new thing. He far and away our best D man, and the guy you want on the ice controlling the game. Today, the Ducks had a line of three dudes that are pretty fucking good, and strangely enough, if you look at the TOI charts, you’ll see how often Duncs TOI overlaps theirs, plus PP and PK duty. I love Hammer, but would prefer him not on the ice vs. Perry/Ryan/Getzy.
Instead of looking at Dunc’s TOI and groaning, how about looking at the positives:
Dunc is below is average TOI for the last three years.
He has yet to log a 30 minute plus game.
He has only 3 29 minute games, and they’re vs. Van, SJ, and ANA.
So can we please stop freaking about how much hockey Duncan Keith is playing? I mean, I hear he’s superhuman and shit. The concern should be how little hockey he plays- pine riding is like his kryptonite.
Chicagoan in the Lou.
but
Dunc himself said in an interview the other day that his productivity decreases after 25 minutes. Last year, the Hawks were rotten in the third period, and I don’t think it’s unfair to point to Q riding Marlboro 72 too hard at times as a big part of the explanation.
I wrote about this before the season, focusing on a game in March where the Hawks gave up two third period goals to drop a game against the Ducks 2-1 at home in the heat of the playoff chase. Excerpt:
Guess who was on the ice for Perry’s two goals? Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook, Jonathan Toews, and Patrick Kane – the absolute inner core of the team. In that game, it is worth noting, Keith and Seabrook carried a particularly heavy load, with 29:14 and 28:01 TOI, respectively, while no other defenseman broke 20 minutes.

great observation on our problrms last year in a nutshell.
actually, great observations on the wearing down effect of all those minutes. we tend to think Keith is superhuman, however, your baseball analogy of 3 days rest was spot on.Perhaps the problem is though, a exhausted DK on the ice is better than a third pairing d-man, especially when the game is on the line.
look at the Duck's 5th goal for an example
our PK was worn down at that point, and they needed a breather in the worst way. Didn’t come, and the result was predictable.

Is Crawford playing too much?
I remember some thought towards the end of last season, that playing him so much might mentally (and possibly physically) exhaust him, causing his play to suffer.
Should we maybe let Emery start some more games. I’m NOT saying Emery is a better goalie or there’s a controversy or anything, but maybe pick some games for him to start and stick with him no matter what happens to the score.
Blackhawks bleed Red & White.
We are all Canucks...including Toews, Sharp, Keith, Seabrook, ...need I go on?

Obviously he didn't have the same herculean effort as Sharp or Toews
but Stalberg had a pretty decent game. Without him fighting hard on the dump-and-chase, Toews wouldn’t have gotten the puck to set up Sharp’s second goal, not to mention him setting up the screen on Sharp’s third goal. That’s exactly what we wanted from him, right?

Lemonhead had a great game, I watched the replay just now...he has had a couple of good games in a row
No Swagger, No Dagger
Is lemonhead his nickname - it's perfect
he’s starting to use his size a bit more. If I recall correctly he put a nice hit on Getzlaf yesterday. #15 didn’t go down, but he certainly didn’t lead the rush out of the Ducks zone.
Lemonhead and Rattlehead (not sure why on that last one) are his SCH names...not exactly flattering but definitely descriptive
Maybe he can earn a better name with better play…the “Frolunda Flash”, the “Calamitous Catamount”
No Swagger, No Dagger
do you get the Lemon head commercials in Canada?
As Toews and Kaner say, Wow! that guys is good, Wish he was on our team.
Rattlehead
Comes from Megadeth’s mascot Vic Rattlehead. Thar be metalheads aboard the SS SCH.
"What is icing?"
"Well, uh... icing appen when uh the puck come down... bang, you know, before the other guys, nobody there, you know. My arm go comme ça then the game stop then start up."

Lemonhead is a candy that is made in Chicago
There is This Commercial with Toews & Kane. The nickname came about when Stalberg managed to hit both posts and the crossbar on one shot. At the time, the comment was made that even the Lemonhead guy couldn’t do that. As for “Rattlehead” I believe that came about because snake-bitten.
Maybe, just once, someone will call me 'Sir' without adding, 'You're making a scene."
Stals works his ass off every shift.....
…..I just wish his mind could catch up to his blistering speed.
H'8ter Proof™
at least his speed is making the D back up in their own zone
you can see this happening with more frequency, as he’s starting to figure out how to push through the usual checking along the boards at the blue line. I can see him getting better at slipping by those checks and racing into their zone, which makes everyone change their defensive posture.
Gotta say Stalberg is winning me over since joining the Capt
He is playing extremely smart and doing all the little things you need to do when playing with Toews. Jonny is now getting the points he was missing out on earlier when being saddled with Bruno. Love Bruno’s hands and IQ, but the man is just too slow.

Randy Carlyle.....
……is stupid. I’m just glad he pulled Hiller. And as for Toews, to quote Jack Nicholson “I AM the fucking shore patrol !!!”
yes he is
Hiller didn’t give up any cheapies, that all were either deflections or perfectly placed shots.
i don't think he took Hiller out because he was upset with him
hiller kept the Ducks in it for awhile until Tazer went all crazy and stuff.
Goaltending needs to improve
Especially at even strength. It’s not panic time, but it’s time to fix that. Crawford providing a “goalie win” would certainly ease those concerns.
Nice to see you again, Patrick Sharp. Take off your jacket and stay awhile.

Maybe Bickell's low (read:league minimum) will be a selling point?
Cause it definitely wouldn’t be his consistent work ethic.

he has speed, a good shot and size
If only he had a player like Hossa’s work ethic and half his hockey sense.
Speaking of hockey sense, there was one play Keith made yesterday that really irked me. The hawks were going for a line change and Keith blasted one into the zone, around the boards and back out of the Duck zone. i don’t think our right winger was even on the ice yet before it hit the Ducks left winger. Keith needs to recognize a softer dump on the left side gives us a much better chnace of sustaining pressure.
I don't hate Bickell like our other SCH colleagues might, but
I understand their pain. To me, it’s kind of like you get what you pay for.
I am nodding furiously with you point about Keith’s slap in. I absolutely loathe plays like that, where a Hawk gains the zone and either let’s one rip right into the goalie’s crest when he could have taken more space in the zone or shoots it in so hard it rings right back out creating an easy breakout for the other team.

the Bicks sucks snowball
has really picked up steam lately. Ironically, his game against Anaheim wasn’t too terrible although he only played 6:48. Only Carcillo played less (deservedly so).
to be honest i was more disappointed with the play toews made that led to the first goal
after jelly got hammered, toews just grabbed the puck and fired it blindly behind him right to bobby ryan, who than just whistled in and scored. at least hold on to the puck for a second or fire it back behind the net to where keith was.

Washington
enroth got pulled yesterday but for the most part has been quite solid this year. I’d like to go with Crawdaddy tonight because I think he’s aour best chance of weathering the initial onslaught that the Kings will bring.
Does Q consider dressing Scott tonight because of Westgarth? If he does, at least wil understand his modus operandi – The mind of Q -the coach who brought us the very effective second PP unit – and then decided to tinker with it in the third yesterday.
I don’t tweet though, so if you get any info on Crow, please pass along
I'd forgotten about old Kev..

who can turn the tide of the game and carry the team to the win if they so choose. I love that. Now to just do it regularly.

i was the oldest of four brothers.
I used to be able to take all three on at once, mainly because I was a tyrant and it wasn’t until my brother bob took boxing lessons that my older brother dominance diminished.
I also recall, (Actually, I was two sheets to the wind so I only remember what they told me, years later!), coming home after being overserved one night. They came home a little after me and found me passed out in the evergreen bushed in front of the house. (I was clearly Shanty Irish) They dragged me out and had threw me back and forth, roughing me up and getting some vengeance for all my tyranny in our youth. Oh, weren;t they having a time.
i’m pretty sure they eventually dragged me into the house, laughing there ass off at there cunning.
I'm also the eldest of four boys..

It seems any arena that has multiple events (basketball, concerts, etc.) over the ice have worse ice due to the heating and humidity levels changing pretty often

it is the humidity level that can ruin indoor ice
and the floor covering used to construct a b-ball court traps humid air. Ice temp is much easier to control than ambient humidity. UC crew does their best to compensate, but soft ice is going to occur when it’s constantly covered. I was hoping the NBA would take the season off.
by Gate3anuhHalf on Nov 26, 2011 3:59 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
that is no excuse for the wretched ice at times there
you don’t hear nearly as many complaints in other multi – use arenas, yet the Hawks ice always receives many jibes.
it might cause worse ice at the UC and other arenas that house NBA and NHL teams
and now ESPN won’t have to resort to talking about hockey for the rest of the winter
related: When I was much younger, I thought since the Blackhawks and Bulls played in the same stadium, it meant there were 2 levels (like 2 stadiums stacked on each other). The Blackhawks played on the bottom level, and the Bulls on top. One day, this will be a reality.

Craw was 2.30, .917 and 33-18-6 while Niemi was 2.25, .912 & 26-7-4.
Niemi’s win/loss record was actually pretty insane in 2010, but then last season he went 35-18-6, 2.38 & .920, i.e. almost identical to Craw while playing with a better team.
