What's The Opposite Of DLR: Canucks 6 - Blackhawks 2
Oh so THAT'S what a power play looks like? In 60 minutes the Canucks were able to score as many power play goals as the Blackhawks have all season. The Blackhawks were all to eager to help them get there too with a long and stupid streak to the penalty box. The fun started with Brent Seabrook leveling Jannik Hansen in the Hawks zone and drawing an obvious interference call. The Hawks were almost able to kill it off but David Booth was able to get away from Dave Bolland and knock home his own rebound for the first of way too many goddamn power play goals.
Michael Frolik was able to even the game before the end of the first on the flukey goal that typically signals that Roberto Luongo was due for one of his off nights (which are coming far too often this year, the one year that I have him in a fantasy league... I hate this greasy pig). However the Blackhawks weren't able to capitalize on the momentum and energy inside the UC. With only seconds left in the first, the 5'10, 175lb Patrick Kane took exception to a snow shower given by one of the Sedins to Crawford and gave him a hard shoulder after the whistle. True to form, the Canuck toppled over as if hit by a freight truck. In the melee that followed, Kane comes out with a roughing call and the Hawks start the 2nd on the kill. After another power play goal from the Nucks, the Hawks were able to bring it to within one when Marcus Kruger crashes hard to the net and chips it over Lou. It wasn't meant to be though as the Canucks scored their lone even strength goal and the Hawks were never in it again.
To the Bullets:
- Other than the Penalty Kill, how was the game Mrs. Lincoln? While they had some speed and jump to their game early, the Hawks looked flat and dejected after it became clear the Canucks showed up to actually play. The third period in particular was one of, if not the most, difficult stretches of hockey to watch this year. They looked like they didn't give a shit and couldn't be bothered to play the dump and chase game it was become clear they needed.
- In retrospect, they didn't even have much jump early in the game. There were at least 2 or 3 odd man rushes, breakaways or fantastic chances given up by the Hawks early on that were thankfully saved by Crawford. The Hawks looked unprepared and surprised by the intensity the Canucks were bringing which is absolutely inexcusable. They had to have known the Nucks were going to come out skating and hitting.. it's how they always play the Hawks. Rather than respond with their own timely hits and quick passing, the Hawks let the Canucks deep inside their heads and ended up playing a retaliation game rather than a responsive one.
- It's particularly painful to watch the Hawks blow a game that had the chance to turn into the Luongo meltdown we've seen many times before. After that first goal, Luongo was ready to crack and all it would have taken were bodies crashing the net hard and few more shots on goal. Instead, the Hawks only managed two more shots on goal for the rest of the period. This let him time to compose himself and get the Canucks back into the game.
- Crawford certainly didn't have his best game of the year but the loss is far from pinned to his shoulders. The big stops he made early on are commendable but it wasn't enough as the Hawks were content to let skaters into the slot uncontested. The Canucks are one of the few teams that can pass just as well if not better than the Hawks, you have to make sure you've got a stick on anyone near the goal or the puck will find his tape.
- And just like that, Daniel Carcillo jumps near the top of the PIM leaders for the Blackhawks. If it wasn't for Jamal Mayers participating in a bit of fisticuffs of his own, Car Bomb would be on top for the team. I'm not sure what happened after his encounter with Rome but from the view I saw on TV it was Rome falling on top of Carcillo and almost immediately taking a few cheapshot punches. I'd normally hope he would show a little restraint there... but fuck it
- The defense is absolutely lost without Duncan Keith back there now. The clock is ticking on both Nick Leddy and perhaps more importantly, Niklas Hjalmarsson. Leddy started the season great but has regressed slightly in the past few games. Lets hope it is just a slump and he can break out of it soon because he doesn't have a ton of room to slide backwards right now. The lack of Keith means the Hawks have no true puck mover on the D right now and could be a need that needs to be addressed over a center come trade deadline time.
- The problem with Hammer runs a little deeper. He simply hasn't been the player he was in the 09-10 season. I know he had his stick tied up on the final Vancouver goal but we need more from him.
- The refs taking about 5 minutes to figure out whatever the hell it was they were trying to figure out after the Hawks goal didn't help anything.
- Really sucks when you just look forward to the end of the game so you can do something else. Oh well... on to St. Louis...

Agree on all the points.
I’d better stop bitching about Duncs, as he is the difference in the D being ‘passable for a playoff team,’ or god awful.
I’d like to think they were just tired. That explains the lack of energy, but not the lack of brains.
First time in a long time I’ve been tempted to switch over to another sport. Don’t know if I can recall the last time I felt they were completely out of the game going into the third.
Last year we embarrassed the Canned Ducks on their home ice early in the circus trip. That woke them up and they were off to the President’s Cup. Let’s hope this wakes the Indian Head up.

What a disappointment
You are at home playing your biggest rival (who’s gasping for air at the moment) and THAT’S the effort you give? I understand all teams lose games but that kind of effort and awareness is intolerable.
Also, Hammer hasn’t been the same player since he missed time due to the hit in the Buffalo game last season.

This meme needs to go away. There is no way it is something that simplistic. If that is the case, he needs to talk to a fucking shrink….or better yet…man up and get over it.

Then what is it?
Was 2010 him playing well for new paper, and once he got it, he regressed?
Hammer’s numbers tell a mixed story. His /- was up in 2011 (13 in 2011, +9 in 2010) but his corsi was down (-6.6 in ’11 to -4.3 in 2010).
I’m with you that if he still has hockey nightmare over the hit from 13 months ago that he needs to see a sports psychologist or something.

Hjammer was a -3 or -4 in the opener last year too.
Was’t Buffalo like the 4th game of the season? It wasn’t like he was dominating for a quarter of the season then all of the sudden he was suspended and his balls retreated back into his belly. He started like shit last year and continued playing like shit after the suspension.
The cause you ask about is somewhere out in the cosmos. Q and Co. certainly haven’t figured it out.

Maybe we just have to accept the fact that 2010 was a career year for the guy

I don't think we're there yet
It typically takes a while for defensemen to reach their full potential. Hammer’s only had two full seasons in the NHL and he’s still only 24.
This is Hack in the Pork Chop Express, and I'm talkin' to whoever's listenin' out there.
I certainly hope that isn't the case and I doubt it is.
Although it is nice knowing that we have Dylan Olsen developing.

You touched on most of the lowlights but missed one:
Power Play. OK, maybe that topic has been beaten to death but if they can’t start scoring on the PP this is going to be one very long and frustrating season. A few games ago I (most of us) thought the PP was turning a corner but it has gone back to looking like a disorganized house league power play.
The lack of D with D2K out of the lineup is very disturbing. Hammer looks worse than last year. (is that really possible?) Leddy – yes, young, but not inexperienced. Is he intimidated by NHLers when he doesn’t have his mentor (Keith) as his d-mate to hold his hand?
This was one very aggravating and frustrating game. Right now we’re not playing like a top tier team.
Thank you, sir! May I have another?
OK, maybe you did
Oh so THAT’S what a power play looks like? In 60 minutes the Canucks were able to score as many power play goals as the Blackhawks have all season.
I guess I just wanted to rip into a lot deeper.

Thank you, sir! May I have another?
Q had it right when he stuck with the 82 pairing. Leddy is still 20/21 years old and there’s no reason to think he’s fully developed (regardless of how well he’s looked with Keith).
As I’ve said all along, it makes most sense to keep him in the lineup with Duncan until at least after the trade deadline. The more experience he gets, the better. He’ll continue to add strength and weight as the season progresses.
Get well soon, Duncs.
completely disagree - the pairing is totally wrong
Leddy should be with someone more contrasting to his style, not someone cut from the same cloth.
Leddy can learn from Keith, a lot, but it won’t be as effective coming with them as a D pairing.
Fighting stupidity since 1958 (its a much bigger project than originally envisioned).
Confusion will be my epitaph.

This loss certainly was special
0/5 on the powerplay and 1/6 on the PK, simply unacceptable.
Dave Bolland lost quite a few draws cleanly on both the pk and the 2nd pp unit. The powerplay issues run much deeper than Bolland’s faceoff percentage on the 2nd unit, but it’s still something that needs a resolution. While this team has enough talent to keep Jamal Mayers off the ice on the man advantage, I think he could be utilized here. Maybe Q needs to let Mayers take the 2nd unit PP draws and play the net presence role that Carcillo is currently assigned to. Again, it’s not ideal, but it’s worth a shot.
This is Hack in the Pork Chop Express, and I'm talkin' to whoever's listenin' out there.
and
I know Bolland has always been bad in the faceoff circle, but maybe he could at least tie his guy up and hope for some fifty-fifty pucks if he weren’t busy planning his next subtle hack, whack, hook, or trip on a Sedin. I love Bolland’s pesky play, but you know what else is annoying to the opposition……being a bitch at the dot.
This is Hack in the Pork Chop Express, and I'm talkin' to whoever's listenin' out there.
Agree 100% on draws.
Both Kane and Bolland were brutal. I mentioned it in the other thread, but Bolland lost every important draw he took tonight. Does Kitchen coach the faceoffs as well?
Cheertheanthem.com
Feels like Kaners FO % has been steadily, or just quickly, going down
other games it didn’t seem to matter as much, his line was still really dominant, but against the Nucks it did not help at all.

I'd buy into a bag skate
If they bag skate Kitchen also for a complete lack of imagination in coaching the PP.
"Stress is when you wake up screaming and you realize you haven't fallen asleep yet"
We keep blaming Kitchen
but we recently saw Havvi sketching a play during a timeout on a PP. So who knows who is coaching that group. At some point though, the players are responsible for the bullshit that they call a power play regardless of who is coaching them.
Thank you, sir! May I have another?
refs
•The refs taking about 5 minutes to figure out whatever the hell it was they were trying to figure out after the Hawks goal didn’t help anything.
The irritating thing is that they didn’t even get it right. After the goal the clock kept running and about 10 seconds ticked off. But did they add the time back on? No, they just waved their arms for a few minutes and then started play as if nothing had happened. If they’re going to stop play to fix it, that’s fine, but it turned out to be a pointless speedbump.
This was just a night where just about everything that could go wrong went wrong. Bah.

Is this a trend or a just a bad game?
I usually wait until the 20th game or so to judge how a team is going to do. They’ve had a couple road trips by then, the lines have been bounced around and the goalies have both had some time to settle in.
Not sure what to think about the Hawks right now. They gave up a 2 goal lead in Tampa (and regularly left the most dangerous scorer open), not to mention that they seem to give up a couple breakaway chances a game. (No wonder Crow does well in shootouts!) For all the depth we supposedly acquired this summer, Keith being out is apparently HUGE for us (and that’s just ONE guy). The wins are nice, but they’ve been way tougher than they should be for a team with this much talent. And all you have to do to stop the Hawks’ powerplay is line up 4 across the blue line—they can’t get a clean entry at all.
I’m nowhere near the ledge, and there’s a whole lot of hockey still to be played. But this team is getting a bit schizophrenic (or however you spell that word that means “we don’t know what to expect from these guys on a nightly basis”). There’s a lot that needs to be tightened up. I’m hoping tonight was just a bad game, and the Hawks will correct some things. Get Keith back and figure out the freaking powerplay, and life should get a bit more enjoyable again.
Thank you Boston for saving us from a dreadful summer! Now, GO HAWKS!!!
I am so far out on the ledge
that I can’t explain it….I realize that a team throws in a stinker every now and then, and besides the Carolinaa game, this was the only other game the Hawks were not even close…..5 PP goals?WTFD2K means a lot to this team, but what happens if this does not stop even when he comes back?Offense is not a problem on this team whatsoever, its TEAM DEFENSE that is killing the Hawks…..ugh…so depressed, gotta go to work

Trend or bad game
The PP and PK woes are a trend, and a worrisome one at that.
The lack of effort is a bad game (hopefully) brought about by playing the 3 game in five days against a rested opponent.
If not, it’s going to be a long season and possibly cost Q his job security.

Yup
Went from 4th best PK in the league to 22nd. In One. Fucking. Game. Way to shit the bed, boys. Mighty impressive. But hey, at least our PP is at the same place (28th) it was before this game!
How you can just not show up against your biggest rival for the past 3 years just blows my mind. Unbelievable.
Shit the bed you say? Completely unexpected.

Keep your chins up
Your team is going through a rough patch right now. I understand completely, being a Canucks fan who had to watch our previous two games. It’s damn frustrating knowing that a team as good as the Hawks are struggling, especially during an important game vs a rival.
Don’t get me wrong, I am pumped that we won, but I was expecting more from the Hawks, and I suspect you guys were too. Your team will turn things around- there’s too much talent on ice not to. I fully look forward to the Nov 16 game which I am sure will be one hell of a battle!
Not to be an asshole...but turning around means leaving 1st place.
So I hope that turnaround doesn’t come. They went to Florida and were majorly distracted by dads and golf and warm weather. They then came home and just dropped an egg. Im thinking it was too much fun (sun) in Florida and had a hangover today for the Hawks. They should be kicking some asses again this week. I worry about a new team playing for their new coach on Tuesday but would like to think we will be destroying Columbus and Calgary later in the week.

Time to abolish the Father's Trip
…..after the first two shifts , one could see they were fatigue-. Hell, I was exhausted hearing about everything that was done. Of Course, then again, we aren’t going to win every game are we?

I hate to say this but I agree.
I understand it’s something the guys love and it’s a nice perk. But the guys don’t seem to play well on the “family” trips or for a few games afterward.
Still, that doesn’t fully explain what we witnessed last night. Yikes.

I honestly think
The Twin Douchebags were going in on Crawford because they knew they would not be called for anything, and all they had to do was fall down when someone nudged them a bit, and it was probably good for a goal. THe Rome thing? Carcillo makes out worse on that?

Last night was a disaster. On the first snow shower, donk actually doesn’t begin to skate towards Crawford until after the whistle. Refs should have called a penalty on both him and Kane.
But whatever. Hawks need to do the same to Lu. That would have been the best form of payback for Crawford. Not leaving him out to dry penalty after penalty after stupid penalty.

This
Totally feel the same way. I hate the Scum, but it’s more out of tradition…I definitely respect what they have accomplished. the Nucks are a whole different animal of hate. I have zero respect for a team that has some serious talent, but still feels the need to dive, whine and take cheap shots.
But…that is no excuse for the debacle that was last night’s game. It almost appeared like the teams switched jerseys before the game and the normal roles appeared reversed. Our boys acted like stupid kanuckleheads…and that CANNOT happen next time.
New Zambonis (how do you pluralize Zamboni)?
Was at the game last night and noticed the Zambonis were different (or at least different than I remember them last year). I have a very suttle understand as to how they work, but it appeared instead of a stream of water that is thinned out using the squeegee, they were misting the water behind the Zambonis.
Is this an attempt to get better ice? Does anyone know if this works better? I was thinking it would lead to fewer puddles, which I know they have had issues with, but I would also think it wouldn’t give you as smooth a surface/ The ice looked as terrible as normal to me last night, but curious what others thought.
Same Zambonis
They were just using hot water, which caused the mist when it hits the cold ice.
I can’t blame last night on shitty ice (the fucking Nucks seemed to be able to control the puck just fine), but WHY can’t we seem to get a decent sheet of ice even when the building is mostly empty between hockey games! It seemed that last night was FILLED with bouncing, rutting, misplayed pucks by the boys.
"Stress is when you wake up screaming and you realize you haven't fallen asleep yet"
Thanks for the info
I thought it was weird, but wasn’t really sure what I was seeing. They don’t always use hot water? Or is it just a difference in how hot when compared to room temperature? I thought you always used hot water to melt the top layer to allow a smoother layer to form.
We all know the Mutants will flop at will
but that does not excuse Kaner and Bolly overreacting to a fucking snow shower or two on Crow. You want to send a message, boys? Just do what you’ve always done to the Nucks, score timely ass goals, frustrate the hell outta them and make THEM overreact and go to the penalty box. That’s been their MO for a few seasons now – don’t fix what isn’t broke.
I thought Kaner's reaction was fine - a subtle shoulder shove (then HDonk falls like Kaner was Seabs)
Bolly’s was over-the-top, completely non-Rat like. I didn’t like that one.

you must have watched a different game
I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about regarding Carcillo.
i didn’t watch the Carcillo game misconduct play, but I did think if there was going to be a game where he lost his shit, it would be last night. I was waiting for him to explode from the 1st period onward and by the looks of what I read, it seems he kept his shit together.
His fight was actually a good one.
Hawks were down 2. United Center was dead. Not long after it, Kruger pounded one home.

Here's the thing.
For the ‘Nucks, this was an absolute must-fucking-win game. With the way they’ve started, had they come into the UC and gotten snuffed by their biggest nemesis, it may very well have crushed their season. The Hawks had to know that, and instead of rising to the challenge, they played like an ECHL team: passes were consistently either too long or too short, the rebounds Bobby Lu repeatedly gave up sat harmlessly in front because there was never a Hawk skating right to the middle; they treated the puck like it was radioactive in their own zone . . . I could go on, but you all watched the game and saw the same thing.
If there’s any positive, it’s that a total shit-the-bed game like this might serve as a wake-up call. But that’s cold comfort for the ass-kicking they got.
An opinion should be the result of thought, not a substitute for it. (Jef Mallett)
Was I the only one
left wondering why the Hawks didn’t snow shower Luongo until he looked like Mt McKinney? Then when a nuck objected they could have done the Spastic Squirrel Dance down to the ice, it seemed like it was working for the nucks…
