Open Season: Blackhawks 4 - Ducks 1
Early in the first period, some hard work from the Ducks led to Duncan Keith getting a tripping call when he took the skates out from under Corey Perry. In the following two minutes the Ducks had some prime chances but the Hawks, and more specifically Ray Emery had an answer for everything that was thrown at them. They would get a few more chances but when Jamal Mayers picks up his first goal in forever along with an assist from John Scott, that must just be demoralizing. The first period was fairly even though the Hawks seemed to have the edge. In the second period it all broke open though. This is a delayed wrap so lets just get right to the bullets, shall we? We shall.
- On John Scott - in no way deserving of a star but a pretty decent shift leading up to his fight. Just pushing Brookbank around the crease. I think it was Parros that eventually hooked him and took his legs out leading to Brookbank's crosschecks. After about 12 unanswered punches the ref seemed to tap Brookbank to see if he wanted out..
In the third Scott almost got several breakaways on Hiller - the comedy gods weren't smiling upon us though as he couldn't handle the puck - About the whole 2nd Star thing - It could very well be a shot at us and everyone else who has given them so much shit about their lack of questions regarding his play. I could just picture Kuc singing this as he cast his vote. On the other hand, it could be that they just wanted to give him a nice moment for a game that wasn't too bad. He didn't have any fuck up moments, got his first point of the year (barely.. even the replays don't show the part where he touched the puck) and he got his first fight of the year. Good for him... I hope he enjoyed his moment as the second star.
- Before the game, Q took the third line aside and told them they needed to do more. I guess that's all it takes, eh? The third line had one of the better games in recent memory. Bolland got hosed on the first goal that was disallowed for questionable reasons but got his own on the power play in the third.
- Speaking of that goal, what a play by Nick Leddy. He's been improving with every game and the burst of speed to get around Francois Beauchemin's check was beautiful. Fantastic pass to Bolland to finish it off too. Can you really believe the Wild gave him up for Cam Barker? Ouch.
- Patrick Sharp now has 12 points in the last 8 games. That's the longest consecutive point streak of his career. Something about waking up to change diapers really must suit him. Either that or playing alongside Marian Hossa. Shooter's goal is candidate for Blackhawk's goal of the year so far. You can actually see Toews say "wow" on the bench as they're watching replays.
- Edzo's rant on the reaction to hard hits stopping the game for fights was spot on. In this case both sides were guilty. First, Jamal Mayers trying to take on Corey Perry after his hit on Kruger and then in the third when Mayers delivered a hit and had to fight Matt Beleskey.
- It would have been nice for the Hawks to unleash DLR on the power play they got for Beleskey's roughing call (and why is that roughing instead of instigator?) but it was also nice to see that Q felt comfortable enough to send out unfamiliar faces late in the game. Duncan Keith still lead in TOI but thanks to the lopsidedness of the game, he only played 23:53. After so many OT games, that's valuable.
- The shot total was pretty much even which is surprising given how much the ice seemed to tilt in the Hawks favor. Giving up three power play opportunities will do that though. Another great game by Emery who was already given the nod for tomorrow's game against the Flames.
- The ice was pretty terrible. Makes me really glad that the NBA season was canceled so we don't have to worry about all those Bulls games making it even worse

Watching players the same age or years younger than me play pro sports makes me feel like a failure...
I think Kills is employing "sarcasm"
as now that the NBA season is back, the ice will be even worse than it usually is, with the UC double-shifting as hockey rink and basketball court.
Let this be the extent of the NBA-specific talk, please.

2 things
I thought Mayers went after Bobby Ryan, not Perry. At least that’s what Edzo said.
Also on the Scott assist I’m pretty sure it came from the breakout in the Hawks end, which was a pretty nice play. He used his long reach to just barely corral a loose puck in the slot and then made a nice outlet pass with a Duck on him in transition. It was a legit nice play and it got rewarded with a point when Mayers and Pokey put a nice blue collar finish in the other end.
Could be
I didn’t write down who the hit was on.. just tried to remember it
Second City Hockey

Yeah it was Bobby Ryan
Then again Kruger just looked like the Ducks punching bag out there last night.
How clean was this hit?
From my perspective, I thought the elbow got up kind of high into Kruger’s head, but I was on the near side so it was tough to tell. That was the difference to me between the two hits that led to fights.
If it was clean, then yeah, Jamal probably shouldn’t have jumped in there like that, but…
by GenPabloSecobar on Dec 17, 2011 4:06 PM CST up reply actions
Both hits
looked clean to me. The one on Krugs looked worse than it was because he was already kind of falling a bit.
No worries, this was the plan all along!
That is his one of Mayer's roles
….to make a player think twice before trying to legally checking a his player into the 8th role.
H'8ter Proof™
Completely agree, and I do appreciate what Jammer brings,
but like I said the hit didn’t seem too bad. Now if Krugs had gotten hit like Jammer hit Fowler; even though his hit was legal also then by all means he should jump in. I just think it gets a little redundant for the enforcer or whatever he is called to jump in every time a player like Krugs gets hit.
If it’s a clean hit and not to punishing like Ryan’s hit on Krugs let it go and file it away for the next game or next shift there’s no need to fight and take that 5 min. major right then and there.
No worries, this was the plan all along!
Holy shit I just saw Shooter goal

What?! He started the “rush”! Okay, it was more like his outlet pass to Andrew led to Bruno working the boards for the ensuing 10 odd seconds before the puck found its way to Mayers for the goal.
with leads to my next point...
Bruno got very little credit on Mayer’s goal, but that was some piece of board work. He set up Mayers quite beautifully.

If he wanted a "hockey destination"
then I can see it as a plus as Ottawa is certainly more pro hockey than Arizona will ever be, but if he was wanting more of a contender or a more competitive team then I have to see it as kind of a wash with Phoenix being a stronger team in recent years.

Per the twitters, Emery back in net tomorrow and Carcillo likely out again
Emery’s been playing well so might as well keep that going, but I doubt Q is going to play him in the back-to-back considering his hip. Even if it doesn’t seem to bother him now there’s no point in taking any risks that could jeopardize anything. So will Crow come out against the Pens or wait till Montréal?
That back to back scares me a little bit.
Penguins are always a tough game and Montreal is going to be performing for a new coach. I seem to remember Montreal absolutely pounding the Hawks physically last year. It’s going to be a grind.
Also, why the fuck are the Hawks starting at 6:30 for that Wensday game.

Did anyone
else catch Tazer speaking with Emery while skating away from the net? I’m not sure what exactly was said but I seemed to see the word “sorry” come from Tazer. The only thing i can think he would be apologizing for is the blown SO which if was in fact the case is a very classy part on behalf of the Cpt. I was pretty bummed that Razor didn’t get it after such a strong game.
No worries, this was the plan all along!
after the game
Toews purposefully hung back and waited while everyone else mobbed Emery… then as Emery started to skate away, Toews approached him. Don’t know exactly what was said, but Razor responded very positively. Right after that, a couple other players seemed to be giving Toews some shit in a good natured, teasing sort of way.

On Bolland's goal
it’s funny because the whole thing that set Leddy afire was an aggressive forecheck. He was gliding back behind his own net with the puck when the forechecker pressured him, He had to giddyup to avoid the check, and he never slowed down.
I hope he takes a lesson from that play. That’s basically the Brian Campbell signature play, amirite?
We like our people!
Big Campbell fan here. You're right, Leddy's play has often reminded me of Phantom.
Too soon? I think not. Leddy caught some flak around here – still does from time to time – but I only see him getting better and more confident each game. Plus he’s like, what, twelve years old?

That would suck
but I really wonder if Q would put him out against Crosby or let Rat take him. I’m sure they would end up on the ice together at some point. A meet in the finals would be incredible. Just be thankful it’s not our stud that has the issues with the melon.
I'm glad the league
has taken such an active stance on the concussions, but they are acting like players just started getting them in the last couple years when in fact, it’s only that they are actually being reported now by the players.
I really do hope Sid comes back soon and the same with Pronger; no matter how much I dislike either of them they are still good for the game.
No worries, this was the plan all along!
I agree with all of that
But I don’t think the league is finished or has done enough. I remember what NASCAR did after Earnhart died, it was an all out effort to find out why he died and how they could fix it. Hockey will have to do something similar to at least get the concussion numbers down.
Better helmet design would be a start
i know they are much better than they used to be but I’m sure they could be upgraded somehow.

Yep
but you don’t have to actually hit your head to get a concussion. A quick change of direction can do the same thing as a hitting your head on the ice. The league has to figure out how to slow the players down or somehow protect the players when 2 of them collide at a high rate. I heard someone on TV (Milbury?) suggest a return of the 2 line pass rule and moving the blue lines back to where they were. I was thinking please no
Yeah I also heard them
talking about reinstating the clutch and grab rules of before the lockout. It is all gonna come down to the players having to lookout for one another. The head snaps with direction change are as bad as the head / ice, head / body collisions but i think if the players begin to be more aware of the consequences that some of this may start to change.
OT, I had a 17yo kid come in to the ER one night after a Godsmack concert with dizziness and nausea for 2 days. Turns out he gave himself a concussion by “head banging” at the show.

I wouldn't count on the players changing
especially come playoff time. IMO it’ll have to be a combination of better/different helmets and other body wear, and a change in the rules. NASCAR improved the cars, the protective equipment worn and the walls at each track. The NHL wil have to do something similar.

Just an fyi, the AHL isn’t bound to honor those suspensions, but they usually do.
There was a guy about a decade ago who smashed another guy in the face with his stick. Got suspended for an entire AHL season but still got to play some games in the NHL.

He actually didn’t play in the NHL during his suspension. Instead he played in Russia, but he was eligible to play with Montreal if the big league wanted him.
