Cannot Wear The Maple Leaf: Habs Eyes On The Prize
Well, you all rested and ready to go? I'm not talking to Duncan Keith, I'm talking to all of you. Make sure you get some good finger stretches in so you're ready for back to back game threads. Here.. do some yoga. It's good for you.
Right, now that that's done, let's get to the game. The Habs come in tonight reeling. Jacques Martin lost his job on Saturday and so far it hasn't done much good. Under their new leader Randy Cunneyworth (who doesn't even speak French - SCANDAL!) they haven't done much better. They've dropped the debut game against New Jersey and Boston. Losing to Boston isn't that big of a deal though.. pretty much everyone is doing that these days.
The biggest problem for the Habs right now is the fact that they actually traded for Tomas Kaberle... no.. wait.. it's that they traded for Scott Gomez. Ok so I don't actually know what the problem is for Montreal but having $11.6M tied up in those two probably isn't helping too much. The rest of the team isn't doing much either though. They're a quick team but one that can't find the net too often. They're 22nd in the league in goals per game, led by Erik Cole who has 13 on the year so far. Special teams is a major concern as they're above only St. Louis in converting with the man advantage, clocking in just a hair over 12% of the time. That's good news since the Hawks penalty kill is starting to show some holes in it again, giving up 3 in the last 2 games. The Habs do have a solid penalty kill though - second overall in the league.
One of the lone bright spots for the team has been the play of Carey Price. The tobacco lovin' goalie has been the Habs best player this year. Though his record isn't stellar (12-11-7) it's hardly his fault. He's got a decent enough Sv% and has at least kept the Habs in the game even when they shouldn't be.... but he's not playing tonight. Perhaps in a way to wake up his team (cause a coaching change isn't good enough), Cunneyworth has decided to start Peter Budaj. The Habs are playing their first night of a back-to-back so it could be just giving Price time to rest. But the Hawks are still on top of the league and while their oppenent tomorrow, the Jets, aren't a pushover, you'd think they'd want their best weapons out for the Hawks. Great news for the Hawks - Price is 2-1-0 with a .954 Sv% against the Hawks and in his only loss he still made 33 saves. Small sample size, sure, but still not a player I love seeing come up against the Hawks. Budaj on the other hand allows close to 3 goals per game against the Hawks and gave up 4 in a Hawks shutout last year when he was still with the Avs.
The Blackhawks are coming into tonight obviously a little tired after last night's fun. It's more than likely that Crawford gets the start as he's both due for one and Emery could probably use the rest. So it's a good test in more ways than one. We can see if he's just in a minor slump, the kind that happens to every goalie from time to time or we may see if it's something bigger like a sophomore slump, the kind Steve Mason never recovered from. I don't think Crawford is close to Mason but maybe something closer to the struggles of Jimmy Howard as we've mentioned before. There could be a bit of rust after a long stint sitting on the bench but if Crow wants to prove he's the true number one than it needs to start tonight.
With Marcus Kruger likely out for a little while, the Blackhawks moved Daniel Carcillo to IR earlier to bring up room for Brandon Pirri. We last saw Pirri in the season opener where he had a secondary assist on the lone goal for the Hawks in the third period. No word yet on the line up but I wouldn't be shocked to see Pirri take right over Kruger's spot on the second line. If that's the case, I doubt we'll see many changes to the lineup from last night. If Q decides to get a little crazy, well then anything could happen and your guess would be as good as mine.
The Hawks gained their composure and played a great third period last night. Despite coming up just a little short, if they bring that same effort against the Habs they should easily walk into the Christmas break with two points. But then putting together that effort consistently is far easier said than done. Oh, and just to take that extra step to reach out to our French speaking audience - click the link for a version of this preview in French. Take note Cunneyworth.

Prenez note Cunneyworth.

OK, here goes. A couple years of French on the line.
MMD can hopefully tell me I did some of it right.

France, no.
Frenchmen, yes.
The Vichy government really didn’t have much practical choice when it came to opting to collaborate with the Nazis, I suppose, although there were some that seemed a bit to happy about it. The French Resistance — and the Free French Army — on the other hand, acquitted themselves fairly well under the circumstances. My understanding was that the sympathies of most of the French citizenry was with the Resistance.
An opinion should be the result of thought, not a substitute for it. (Jef Mallett)

Random Stats for the Evening
Hawks PK+PP sum now sits at 98.02, a month ago it was barely cracking 90.
Habs are in the bottom half of most team Cats, except PP Opp (5th at 138 to Hawks 11th 126), PK G/A (3rd with 15 to Hawks 20th with 24) and PK 2nd at 89.05 (Hawks equals to shitty to put up here still). GA/G (13th at 2.706 to Hawks 20th at 2.971). The PK and GA things are the only things the Hawks are in the bottom half for.
The Hawks GF-GA-L score is 3 pace of 7.24 (100% Historical rate of playoff appearances)
Habs are at -19 pace of -46 (Only 25% of teams scoring this low have made the silly season)
The Habs GA/G on the road is at a decent 2.438 but the Hawks Home GF/G is at a killer 3.750.
Hawks in my ranking currently sit in 10th in the NHL and 6th in the WC at score of 1.897 (very minute change from last night less then 1/1000 a point change in the score, but a one place drop from 9 to 10)

She's certainly more of an authority than I am
but yeah it’s been on the twitters from her and others that Krugs is out for the game tonight
Trauma: Having to root for the Sedins to have a big night.

How about a bench clearing brawl when it's 0 0 and there are so many misconducts that it's a forfeit for both?

Tell the "Canucks" (since they are all Canucks in the City)
That if SCUM win tonight, the Cannots are moving to Quebec City. The City’s populous should take care of all three issues for us.

Guess not bad

Hawks fan from Montreal
… tonight’s game is pretty special for me. I usually root for the Habs… unless they play against the Hawks (which does not happen often enough). I hope the Hawks make the Hawks PAY for last year’s OT loss in Montreal. The Habs’ goalie tonight (Budaj) is pretty shaky, and Quenneville should simply recommend not too much strategy – just shoot, shoot and shoot, it’ll work.
Aller les Hawks, bottez-leur le cul, ostie !!! (Kick their asses, dammit!).
Good evening all
SBN finally got their Android app together… buggy as heck (doesn’t seem to rotate w/my screen, force quits periodically, etc.) but, I appreciate the effort?

I didn't like the iphone app
until they did the first update – once they get feedback and tweak it you will probably like it better
I'm on the twitters @tivogoddess
Ugh, Crow's numbers make me sad
Let’s get them fixed tonight
Sassone
Canadiens backup Budaj starts; Montreal writer told me saving Price for Winnipeg tomorrow because better chance to win that one.
glad i’m not a habs fan (i was, until that OTL)
