The Quick and the Dead: Kings 2 - Hawks 0
Sometimes these things happen. The play on the ice was fairly even, but Quick stood on his head to keep the Hawks off the board.
The Hawks did a nice job killing 6 minutes worth of minor penalties in the first, but could not capitalize on the two powerplays they were given, and we were scoreless after one. The Hawks did not bring the defensive intensity in the 2nd that was probably required after a scoreless first, and Corey Crawford made 14 of 15 saves in the period. The Kings potted their first, which was the eventual game winner, when Crow was unable to freeze a puck that Kyle Clifford knocked away from him, and Hunter made a nice drag move to free up space to bury one top shelf
LA added the insurance tally just over a minute into the third thanks to Justin Williams kicking Nick Leddy's skate out, which freed him up to take several shots in tight, and eventually Stoll skated in and cleaned up the mess on his backhand.
The third period was probably the Hawks best. The Men of Four Feathers put 18 shots on Jonathan Quick, but couldn't get the right bounces on rebounds, deflections, or blocked shots. The final 7 minutes or so included several quality chances for the Hawks, but unfortunately for the home team, Quick completed the shutout.
Digging up what I can
Q was unhappy with the non-calls on both Kings goals, here are his postgame comments:
"Both goals should have been whistled down," he said of the Kings’ scores. "Both goals should have been called something. Infractions on both their goals. Clearly the refereeing tonight was tough to watch." Quenneville said "goaltender interference" and a "slew foot" should have been called on the Kings’ goals.
- With regard to Q's complaints, I think he's half right. The second goal certainly was a trip/slew foot on Williams, but I don't see much of a problem with the first Kings goal. In any case, the defense on both tallies left a lot of be desired. On the first goal, the Dmen and forwards (Mayers and Fro specifically) lost track of the puck and Trent Hunter, leaving him with an easy goal. I'm sure there are some that will be frustrated with Crow's inability to freeze the puck in that situation, but I'd say that the bigger mistake is the rebound that he kicked into the slot on Hunter's initial backhander from the right side. On goal number two, Nik Hjalmarsson seemed content to stand by and watch Williams take several whacks at the loose puck. If that wasn't bad enough, he wasn't even close to preventing Stoll's backhand shot.
- The rebound on the first goal aside, I think this was Crawford's best game of the last three. Crow made several key saves, including: a big glove side save on Richards, the penalty shot by Richards, and a ridiculous post to post save on a Trevor Lewis tip. Who Q starts on Friday is anyone's guess. Crow had a strong game, but with the short win streak being snapped, Q probably thinks that it's finally safe to go with Emery. It's a constant battle with the hockey gods, no?
- Anytime the home powerplay wants to chip in, that'd be fine by me; 11 for 74 = 14.9%, good for 21st in the league. Now that I think about it, those sub par numbers probably don't even include tonight's 0 for 4. If that's the case, we can drop that number down to 14.1%.
- Another rough night for Sean O'Donnell; a team worst -9 CORSI in just 9:38 played. Q doesn't like Lepisto, nobody likes what OD is bringing to the table right now, and even Scott's biggest fans couldn't possibly want to see him logging 10-15 minutes a game in the playoffs. It might be a good idea to bring in a bottom 3 Dman before the 9 game road trip in February. McClure likes Josh Gorges, I like Tim Gleason (a HungryHungryPanda original thought), whoever it is, just make sure that Q likes him.
- Anze Kopitar certainly hasn't proven himself to be much of a Hawk killer, good on Bolland and Marlboro 72 for keeping him pretty quiet.
- Patrick Kane has points in 2 of his
last 3last 4, but it just doesn't feel like he's a difference maker right now. Hopefully, it's just the flu holding him down. - While I'm going to be frustrated with a hole in the top 6 and one on the back end, this certainly isn't a panic game in any way, shape, or form. Jonathan Quick is one of the best young netminders in the league, and he had himself a game. On to Friday, when the Hawks welcome Scum into town for their first match up of the year.

I didn't care for the Hawks reaction to the loss
in particular I didn’t care for the reaction of two people who I seldom have criticism for, at least in their approach to the game. Coach Q’s blaming the refs strategy seemed out of place. The first goal appears to have nothing wrong with it, and a lot worse gets let go in goal mouth scrums in the playoffs. The second goal could have been waived off for an interference call, and it would have been a legit call, but despite the play appearing in the tv frame I didn’t even see it until the 3rd review of the play. It was the type of thing that gets called if the ref is looking right at it, and the type that could easily not get called and just get lost int the play. Arguably a penalty but not the type of egregious missed call that you get on your soapbox about after the game. Q has turned the other cheek after games with much worse, he wasn’t holding particularly strong cards to choose this moment to make a stand. Odd.
And I didn’t care for Toews calling Quick lucky, saying he must have had a horseshoe up his ass for a few of those saves. The guy stood on his head, something that’s not exactly an aberration for him. Quick leads the league with 5 shutouts, is 7th in SV% at .930 (min 3 GP) and 8th in GAA at 2.08 (min 3 GP). Toews is a leader, a very good leader, and he went up against a top caliber opponent who rose to the occasion. Tip your cap and get him next time.
Taken together these don’t paint the Blackhawks in a very good light. I expect this from Mike Gillis, much less so from Toews and Q. Hopefully it’s an isolated incident.
Q also added that you're not going to win a game without scoring
So yes he ranted about the refs more than we’re used to, but it seemed clear to me that it was ultimately not their fault we lost.
And as for Toews, I didn’t read it as passing Quick’s success as all luck and more how he couldn’t believe some of his saves.
Also, Bolland got away with a really dangerous slewfoot
I think it was actually on Colin Fraser, behind the Hawks net in the 2nd period. Could have been called a high stick, too.

I think Q's problem with the first goal
was that it could have been Too Many Men on the Ice for the Kings. Right as they were entering the zone the puck hit a player going off the ice.
It would have been such a close call for the refs to make though and I, too, don’t see why Q is making such a big deal out of it.

It should not have been close at all
Hunter jumped early and the puck hit him
How many goals
have been scored against us this year while our players on the ice were busy asking for a penalty call? I have the count as at least four – twice for Meyers, once yesterday (on the TMM) and at least one other.
liked the deep analysis in order to spare blame on Crow
Emery should be in net friday
Serious?
Crawford was SOLID all game long. No way can anyone blame him for either of the goals, or the loss. When your goalie has a 94.7 save percentage, you should win. Simple as that. The Hawks “offense” was just terrible tonight. Shots from 60 feet out and Kaner just whiffing opportunity after opportunity. That kind of effort won’t get it done against the Wings.
definitely seemed to me like hawks had many chances
That they simply couldn’t capitalize on across the board. We lost because offense didn’t score goals but Crow’s gotta cover that puck.
I wouldn’t mind emery in Friday because I liked his play and it’s be good to keep both goalies fresh. But I don’t think Crow shouldn’t play because of this loss

I disagree.
When the puck is sitting in your crease for that long while you dantily try to get a hand on it, it is your fault if it ends up in the net. Notice the difference between Quick and Crow. Besides the fact Quick absorbs shots while Crow creates rebounds for the opposition, when the puck was in the King’s crease, Quick took physical control of the situation. On the other hand, Crow apparently asked the opposition nicely to stop swinging at the puck so he could reach in and grab it without getting hurt.
really?
you must really have it in for crawford. it’s not as easy as you may think covering a puck up in the scrum.
Turco was good, but Crawford has a force field...

Quick also had nobody in front of him
Whereas Crow often had 2-3 guys in his kitchen swatting away at the puck. Your point would be valid had the circumstances been even for both goalies.
I don’t think anyone here has been more critical of Crawford this season than me, and personally I thought tonight was his best games since the first 2 weeks of the season.
Did he give up some bad rebounds? Sure, EVERY goalie does in EVERY game. Just like every player makes mistakes in every game. Right now the Hawks have two goalies who are both playing well. We should enjoy that and hope it lasts. Lots of other places to point blame for tonight.
And hats off to Quick for closing the gate when the Hawks surged in the 3rd. Each goalie was his respective team’s top star IMO.

Crow's only mistakes:
Not covering a puck quickly enough during a scrum with sticks and skates in his face, cost him a goal.
Sliding out of his crease during a solid save. Happened twice by my eye. Did not hurt him, and he made the saves.
His glove was amazing all night, in contrast to his November struggles. A solid performance overall and the only reason we lost 2-0 instead of 4-0 or worse. Stopped a LOT of high quality chances, and slammed the door on a penalty shot.

if you go back and watch the goal
the bigger issue on goal number 1 was Crow’s inability to control the backhand shot from the right side. He just about had the puck covered when Clifford knocked it out of his glove.

Blaming the refs is my job, Hawks job is to score goals
Not Crow’s fault the Hawks put up a goose egg, give Quick Quick Like a Chat his well-earned props. One loss is one loss, Hawks have been playing well on the whole, just need to be ready for Friday.
If graffiti changed anything it would be illegal
This game could have been a lot worse
No one, other than Crow, was playing amazingly, but I also can’t single out any single player that was horrible. Tough loss, but I’m already thinking of Friday. There’s that familiar edge that only means a Detroit game, and if losing this one is what it takes for some added motivation then, I will take it.
Dammit.....I didn't think we were ever gonna lose again!!!!
…we came out strong until Scott was called for roughing up 4 Kings and that goon Sharp got caught swing his axe. Those two checks by Scott in the first period looked like Godzilla throwing a bus around in Japan.
H'8ter Proof™
I saw where Toews said in a pregame interview on channel 7
that the team knew the Kings were finally playing well with Sutter and had to guard against any kind of a let down based on past experiences in winning just about every game with them. Pffft.
Jon Quick was on his belly an awful lot last night
Yet the puck wasn’t behind him in the net. Kid played a real solid game. Hawks didn’t capitalize on some good chances but that march to the penalty box in the first 10 minutes of the game was not the tone you want to set against the worst offensive team in the conference.
Agree with Hack that Corey played great tonight. If it were up to me, I’d start him on Friday. Of course that means that Q will start Razor. I’m guessing Odie will get a game off Friday but it’s just a matter of will they put Scott out there against a skilled team like Detroit or do the smart thing and actually start Lepisto.
The only genuine disappointment I had in our play was the man advantage. Way too much playing on the perimeter, not enough rubber to the cage.

Re: Disappointment
I thought Leddy looked bad…although I didn’t see the slew-foot down on the other end of the ice.
I do stuff for CheerTheAnthem
I spent a lot of time last night bitching about the lack of net presence.
Which wasn’t really THAT bad. Quick made at least two astounding saves with his left pad going post to post, or it’s a tie game at the end of reg.
I will credit the Kings D men with doing an excellent job of covering the back door post. Seems every time one of our forwards got near the paint, both their D men were there. Crow could have used a little more of that sort of aid.
Not a bad effort last night, certainly nothing in comparison to the let downs in November, and if the puck and the whistle worked for us a little better, we would have won and wouldn’t be knit picking. Now it’s all about how the boys respond.
I agree with JMH, our march to the penalty box in the first killed our mo before we could establish dominance in the O zone, which we seemed to be doing the first few shifts.
2 Points on Friday, no matter how ugly, will have us all giddy.

nice litmus test coming up eh
overused term but might as well see what we got right now against SCUM.
Crow
was as good as you could want. He should play Friday. If he doesn’t, it sends the message that you get yanked if you lose, even if it wasn’t on you, and that’s a bad signal to a goalie after 1 loss.
Hawks Dmen had some lapses, and Crow bailed out most of them. We had very little net presence in their end, but it might not have mattered: sometimes the bounces all go the wrong way and sometimes the other goalie stands on his head. Some of both last night.
Color me disappointed but not worried.

Isn't it the message that was sent to Razor?
by LavalPhantom on Dec 29, 2011 11:10 AM CST via iPhone app up reply actions
Crow was pretty good to only let in 2 goals.
I really like Emery, but Crawford is supposed to be the starter and you gotta let him keep playing as long as he isn’t bad or overworked or injured.
Now, if he totally shits the bed on Friday, Razor should probably get a lot more starts.
What's the deal with
airline food shutouts?
The Hawks are the #5 scoring team in the league this year (3.19 GF/G), but they have been shut out four times- only the Islanders have suffered more shutouts.
I’m generally a fan of the line generator, but it seems like when the game is half over and the Hawks haven’t scored, Q just goes batshit. I wonder if this has something to do with the team’s curious penchant for getting shutout.
On the flipside, although the Hawks are #15 in the league in GA/G, they are one of only four teams that has yet to register a shutout. The others are defensive stalwarts NYI, CBJ, and OTT, #s 25, 29, and 30 in the league in GA/G.
Finally today on “shutout corner”. Did you know:
Neither OTT or CBJ has been involved in a shut-out game either way this year. Sounds like not much defense happens in Ottawa, but CBJ is #27 in the league in GF/G (2.33) but hasn’t been shut out yet. Remarkable.
