Round 1 To Gondor: Scum 2 - Hawks 3

I know dude! I couldn't believe he didn't know you were going five-hole either!

Or I guess it's Round 1 to Eddie Furlong, or whatever. Fuck it, I can't keep up with McClure's level of dorkdom. Whichever one fits after that preview.

In a thoroughly enthralling game, the Hawks came out on top and passed one of these marker games with flying colors. While it won't be enough for us to fully buy in with this club just yet, it sure does feel good. And it's also a great way to close out the calendar.

Both teams traded periods of momentum, dominance, and chances. Both displayed great defensive discipline at times. Both got physical when they needed to. All in all, it was just a wonderful advertisement for the sport. But the Hawks spells seemed just a little more sharp, their physicality a little more snarly, their chances just a little more cutting. In the end, it was by those small margins that the Hawks walked out with two points.

Bullets:

-Right off the top, the defensive effort in the 3rd period was simply the most dominant of the season. Maybe I'm reading the play by play wrong, but it appears as though the Hawks held the Wings to just two shots on goal after they took the lead. I certainly can't remember a huge save Corey Crawford had to make with the lead. This was seeing one out professionally in every sense of the word, and that's what special teams are made of. Should I mention that they completely defensively dong-whipped a team with Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Lidstrom, and the rest?

-Speaking of Lidstrom, I think the film of his 1st period against Jonathan Toews should be kept on file for when anyone considers giving him another Norris he doesn't deserve.

-In fact, the one advantage that was clear the Hawks had was that the Wings defense just doesn't move all that well. And that's anyone. This will of course change when they trade for Ryan Suter in February, but for now we'll enjoy the gap. The Hawks plan was clearly to beat their D around the outside, and for the most part they did so. On the other side, the Hawks can move from their backline, at least for the most part.

-Jimmy Hayes had a great first shift in the NHL, and....he had a great first shift in the NHL.

-I think Steve Montador will look a lot better when he gets a partner who he can trust and doesn't make him scramble. Then he'll get more than 11 minutes. I still think that guy could easily be Sami Lepisto.

-I have no complaints with Car Bomb when he's actually initiating contact when it matters.

-Hey, dat Horsa guy! He might could play a lil' bit.

-Did Johan Franzen dress tonight? Oh right, he took a penalty.

-I love it when Todd Bertuzzi proves to be pretty much a joke before the playoffs.

-Dave Bolland and whoever is skating with him continue to get pinned far too often in their zone. Part of the success that built this "rat" character that Bolland has embraced -- possibly to the detriment of his game slightly -- is that he could make the top scoring threats of other teams play defense for spells. They can't now. Maybe that's his linemates, maybe it's still that foot, maybe it's something else. But it's got to be sorted.

That's now a five point gap on Scum. Chances to make it bigger. But enjoy it for now. Everyone have a safe and enjoyable NYE tomorrow night. Don't drive, try and stay in one place surrounded by those you care about.

Maybe I'm crazy

But what was the point of obstruction on Toews for the penalty shot call? I’ve watched the replay several times (via the Team site) and can’t seem to see anything blatant on the play that would warrant a penalty shot.

Also, douche (no pun intended) move by the Wing player who ran into Seabs and knocked him over after his goal. That was classy.

Didn't see Toews breakaway

But I did see Hossa’s breakaway right before it, where Lids had his stick up on Hossa’s hands and got away with it. John and Troy made it sound like it he did the exact same thing, but if he didn’t it could have been a makeup call for the miss on Hossa’s chance.

It was not a bad call,

He did hook his right arm on the way in, if it had been a no-call that would have been fine as well.

At the Speeds of the game it can be hard to see the whole thing. Toews got called on a Penalty vs LAK, but Toews was not the reason the skater fell on the breakaway, Frolik in the playoffs blew a tire just as some shithead was poke checking and got the stick low and drew one as well. In regards to calling a PS it was not absurd, but perhaps not exactly warranted either.

If Seabs shot doesn't go in

the Wing player makes the right play using the body on Seabs there and you can tell in the replay that he doesn’t realize the shot goes in until either just as he’s making contact or right after.

I know the Hawks won 4 of 6 last year vs Scum

And I know they’re over .500 vs Scum the last 3-4 years

And I know the Hawks won the cup more recently

And I know it won’t really be true til they slay the dragon in the playoffs, but…

Tonight’s the first time since I’ve been watching the Hawks where I don’t feel like the Hawks are the Wings’ little brother. It’s the first time where the Hawks have trailed DET and I didn’t feel like they were about to get get blown out, and the first time where they’ve lead by 1 and I didn’t feel impending doom. It’s the first time I’ve really believed the Hawks were better.

by Bellwether Meltdown on Dec 31, 2011 3:32 AM CST reply actions

the red wings are still a good team this year, a very good team,

In fact, they are so good that the only real advantage the Hawks hold over them is that father time is our side. That was most evident watching Toews horse Lidstrom around the rink in the first.

I firmly think that the Red Wings are standing on the knifes edge between elite status and mediocrity based on the age of the team. Unless significant changes get made in the next CBA to release more talent to the open free agent market I just don’t see how the Red Wings could do a quick rebuild through free agency. More likely at some point, sooner than any Wingnut would want, Detroit will be in the lottery picks. Sports are cycilical, they have a wax and wane, and the wane can be forestalled but not entirely avoided.

Am I paranoid? I don't know. I went to a therapist once, but I left before he gave me the diagnosis, cause he had it out for me.

This was enough of a win (coupled with St Louis and Minn) to make me start thinking this team is for real. If can fix the PP, the rest of the league is in trouble, even Boston.

Hawks aren’t far behind, though. Especially if they get Montador playing more effective minutes or we bring in a d-man that can play over 15 minutes per game in the 5/6 slot.

I saw the first two periods

and the Hawks made the Wings look slow. Lidstrom was burned more than once. The Wings maybe a position team but they didn’t handle the consistent press the Hawks through at them. Hayes looked like a monster out there, Scott height with skating ability. It should be interesting when the Wings make the inevitable trade and improve their team.

wow that's much more optimistic than my take

sure Lidstrom’s lost a step or two, but that team has a lot of active sticks and they weren’t caught out of position very much – the game could’ve easily gone in the other direction IMO. I saw numerous opportunities where we turned over the puck in the neutral zone and they just blazed back and took a great shot on net.

Agree

Could have gone either way, some if-onlys to point to by either side (those goal posts must be stiff and sore today). One possible advantage I see for the Hawks: if stamina was a problem for the Wings over 60 minutes last night, what about when they are 60, 70 games into the season — as has been mentioned here already today, they’re not a young team.

Well, that was fun.

Always nice to see two good teams play good hockey. This series is going to get crazy before the month is out. While we’re watching the next spate of close-packed games, keep in mind what the re-alignment will do for these teams’ playoff schedules. You think it’s a rivalry now? Wait until these teams are playing every year for elimination in the spring.

The Hawks played great...however

I counted at least three shots by the Wings that did the old Stals pinball route, at least two shots hit two posts each time. Granted, there are always games where the bounces go against you as well, but it should be noted. Also, why no love for Corey? I thought he played outstanding in the first two frames, made a couple of terrific stops – and NO REBOUNDS. Looked an awful lot like the Crow from last year – more of this, please.

I disagree

The worst Monty has looked this year is when paired with a top 4 player. What role he plays should have little to do with his coverage in the defensive zone. He’s simply not the defensive stalwart that we thought he was. He’s a #5 defender on this team and has been playing like one.

Or you can go the route of Tim over at CtA and still insist that he was brought here to be a top 4 player and that his play has to do with everyone else but him.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Dec 31, 2011 8:58 AM CST up reply actions

Monty was a healthy scratch in the playoffs

for a Buffalo team that wasn’t exactly brimming with talent. Almost half a season in and I’m not exactly convinced that Stan found the diamond in the rough with him.

by Scott13 on Dec 31, 2011 11:32 AM CST up reply actions

that's not exactly fair...

Buffalo is stocked with good defensemen. They’ve got a true #1 and then 5 or 6 #3/4 type guys. While not great, they’re pretty solid all the way through.

There’s a whole lot of bad actors in that play but I only have so much sympathy for Kopecky. If he has to worry about the plate in his face he can’t really go punching people who aren’t looking even if some kind of response on his part was warranted.

by Scott13 on Dec 31, 2011 12:05 PM CST up reply actions

Yup, that's about my only issue with that play

I've thought about this

Ya know, Del Zotto has to know he just cant skate away from that kinda crosscheck “unmolested”. So dont ya think he knew Tomcop was gonna fire one on him. That woulda kinda, sorta, mostly, point to it NOT being REALLY (kinda, sorta, etc,) a sucker punch, per se??

If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up too much space.

disagree

Del Zotto was doing what a thousand players before him have done and didn’t get sucker punched for doing.

by aeroplane on Dec 31, 2011 9:07 PM CST up reply actions

After the high crosscheck

as he’s bringing his stick down, he knifes Kop over the head with his stick blade, knocking his helmet off (oh, Kopecky!). Who turns away after getting into like they did and then pulling something like that? I thought it was stupid on Del Zotta’s part too. (fyi, he also got a penalty for high sticking)

by ChicagoNativeSon on Jan 1, 2012 10:02 AM CST up reply actions

at about 1:10 of the video linked above...

you can see that Del Zotto loses control a bit during their struggle in front of the net, but nothing that looks worthy of getting sucker punched.

by aeroplane on Jan 1, 2012 10:28 AM CST up reply actions

Del Zotta's part.

Yeah, I really don’t get most peoples response to this. The video really doesn’t show what happened to Kopecky. It pretty much only shows the result.

Del Zotta cross checks a guy to the head and comes back with a spear. A spear or butt-ending hit are above and beyond normal play. You knock a guy over like that, he regains balance comes at you, you cross check him, he comes back at you and THEN you turn away? Seriously? Players on the boards that turn away before they get checked tend to get criticized for a cowardly act but people are OK with what Del Zotto did here?

Kopecky threw one “gloved” punch. Kopecky never dropped gloves. That is roughing and a match penalty because Del Zotto did turn away.

Of all the people involved, I’m lease upset with Kopecky. Del Zotto’s play was cowardly, you do that to somebody’s face then you need to face them, don’t turn away when they finally get close enough to respond.

And Rupp’s action was literally criminal. You grab a guy whos arms are wrapped up by a referee and start throwing punches. To a guy that never dropped his gloves. That is the very definition of the instigator penalty. And in a play where it was created for, it doesn’t get called.

League had a chance here to make a statement on who “polices” the play. Give Del Zotto a game for the spear, Kopecky a game for the “match penalty” and give Rupp 10 games for the real criminal act in the play. Instead they do nothing and Shanahammer loses all credibility.

by DaleHalas on Jan 1, 2012 11:44 AM CST up reply actions

Kop didn't get cross checked to the head

the whole play is shown in the link above, at around 1:05-1:12. Disagree with you completely on this. Del Zotto deserves the cross check penalty and nothing more from that play.

by aeroplane on Jan 1, 2012 12:42 PM CST up reply actions

Not sure how you're missing it?

And again, Del Zotto got a penalty for it. Watch at the 5 second mark. That’s how Kop loses his brain bucket. He got brained. Del Zotto knifes his stick right down over Kop’s head.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Jan 1, 2012 2:02 PM CST up reply actions

because Kop doesn't get crosschecked in the head

a runaway stick that grazes over a players body isn’t a crosscheck to the face. And yeah, he got the penalty he deserved, I’m not arguing that fact.

by aeroplane on Jan 1, 2012 2:06 PM CST up reply actions

Ah...

I never said he got crosschecked to the head. Maybe that’s part of the confusion, although I guess we just disagree. He took a high crosscheck to chest, near the neck, but the highstick was what I felt Kop was reacting to.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Jan 1, 2012 5:27 PM CST up reply actions

I do think that is the confusion.

The initial cross check is either to the neck or to the face. Not really sure. That is NOT what the problem was or what set Kopecky off, IMO.

It was what follows, which looks like a full “chopping wood” swing of the stick to the back of Kopecky’s head. This was when Kopecky was in a bowing position. No idea how anyone expects a player to take that kind of a hit and NOT retaliate.

Maybe somebody with better screenshot abilities could show that swing. Cause I’m of the impression that most people (even those talking about this play) missed that part of it.

by DaleHalas on Jan 1, 2012 5:56 PM CST up reply actions

the runaway stick

yeah. It happened. It was careless, but it wasn’t intentional. Nor did it warrant the punch.

by aeroplane on Jan 1, 2012 7:16 PM CST up reply actions

btw

Rupp got 5min + game misconduct. Right call on throwing Kopecky and Rupp out of the game.

by aeroplane on Jan 1, 2012 1:04 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah the rake

You can’t rake a guy. That is WAY above a normal play. You knock a helmet off swinging a hockey stick like that and you have to face the repercussions. NO WAY you can just turn your back there. So we will just have to agree to disagree on that.

As for Rupp he didn’t get an instigator nor aggressor penalty and he should have gotten both. Which would have given him an additional game off and a fine for his coach. So again we are not going to agree on this.

46.11 Instigator – An instigator of an altercation shall be a player who by his actions or demeanor demonstrates any/some of the following criteria:…; obvious retribution for a previous incident in the game or season.

46.2 Aggressor – The aggressor in an altercation shall be the player who continues to throw punches in an attempt to inflict punishment on his opponent … who is an unwilling combatant.

A player who is deemed to be both the instigator and aggressor of an altercation shall be assessed an instigating minor penalty, a major penalty for fighting, a ten-minute misconduct (instigator) and a game misconduct penalty (aggressor).

by DaleHalas on Jan 1, 2012 1:21 PM CST up reply actions

You feel it’s okay to sucker punch a guy. Okay. I don’t.

I’ve been consistent about my disdain for the way Kop and Rupp handled the situation from the beginning of this thread.

Del Z needed to control his stick better on the crosscheck, but it got away from him since Kop wasn’t in a good position to absorb the blow too well. Hockey isn’t always going to be clean.

I gotta assume you’re completely not seeing the infraction we’re talking about. Otherwise, I’m not sure what position is a good one for absorbing a stick brought down over the top of your head. The turtle, maybe?

by ChicagoNativeSon on Jan 1, 2012 2:05 PM CST up reply actions

Kop didn’t have the opportunity to set his feet due to the battle between him and D.Z. When the crosscheck occurred, Kop flailed more easily than Del Zotto expected which is where the stick got away from the Ranger player.

I see the infraction you’re talking about. I don’t think it deserves a sucker punch. Gutless play by Kop.

Ranking

As I said, I’ll give Kopecky third most egregious “bad form” on that play.

And yes, I have a different interpretation of what a “sucker punch” is. My definition more matches CNS on this one.

As for the gif, make sure it shows the part where Del Zotto swings a stick and clobbers Kopecky in the head with the blade hitting him so hard it knocks off his helmet.

And by all means feel free to continue to try and tell me that that is a “normal” play in hockey. One where you can just walk away from. Without expecting any repercussions.

by DaleHalas on Jan 1, 2012 2:57 PM CST up reply actions

I’m not saying a player didn’t lose control of their stick (becuase that happened unintentionally) but that sucker punch was disgraceful.

By the way...

All these games are meaningless. No one can beat Boston and there really is no logical reason, other than playoff revenues, to continue the season.

“Clearly” the rst of the league is playing for second place. Haven’t you read that the current Bruin team might be Boston’s best of all time?

I went ot wingingitin motown to read their recap last night. Very level-headed assessment of the game. The one thing that struck me was when the writer said the Hawks seemed to control the puck for most of the third. It’s ussually the other way around in these affairs.

Maybe that's over the top, but...

Best Pts% in the league and they’re outscoring their opposition by a 2 to 1 margin – which is unheard of nowadays.

They lead in the league in both GF/G and GA/G, and their 64 GoalsAgainst leads the league by a large margin. The Hawks by comparison have given up 107 GA on the season.

Boston started 3-7-0 (where they lost 5 of those games by 1 goal). Since then, they’re 21-2-1.

The league’s top offense and defense, top 5 PP and PK, and great goaltending. They’re pretty damn good.

That was the best 3rd period for the Hawks that I can remember

they just did everything right. Conversely, that was probably the worst 3rd the Wings have played (I haven’t seen enough Detroit games to know). The Wings took multiple stupid penalties and just looked incapable of winning and advancing the puck.

I don’t think the Wings are overmatched by the Hawks by any stretch, but they certainly were in the 3rd last night and for stretches in the 1st. I expect them to be better in the next 5 meetings and I’m glad the Hawks are racking up points while they’re available.

by K_Dog on Jan 1, 2012 10:26 AM CST up reply actions

I agree on the 3rd period

I kept thinking Detroit was going to make a push and they just really didn’t. I’m sure the penalties didn’t help them any but I’m thinking the pace of the game for 60 minutes really took it out of them.

I like what little we say of Hayes and I hope he stays til he proves he doesn’t belong here.

by Z-man24 on Dec 31, 2011 9:12 AM CST reply actions

The Twitters (and SCH's own game threads) were alive with the expected over-the-top Hayes love

Like Sam said, he had a great 1st shift. And IMO a good first game. It was good to see and Q obvious was happy with his performance.
But…

Hayes is the savior, Smith is a distant memory, and Hayes NEEDS to be playing in the top 6 because he is the answer to the big bangin’ PF the Hawks need. I also read that’s he’s able to create his own space and has the ability to physically “throw” not just one, but two, defenders out of the crease to get net presence. Somehow this all went unnoticed in the AHL against lesser competition.

Cue McClure in 5, 4, 3…

by ChicagoNativeSon on Dec 31, 2011 9:31 AM CST up reply actions

Not saying he's the savior

just wouldn’t mind seeing a little more of him. As long as Kruger is out, there is room for him here. I’d rather see this kid get 4th line minutes than watch Scott ride the pine for most of the game.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Dec 31, 2011 10:28 AM CST up reply actions

no problem

I agree with you that calling him the fix in the top 6 is a tad premature. His point totals in the AHL don’t exactly make your eyes pop. However, maybe he does fill a role for the Hawks and is just the right fit. IMO he deserves a couple more games to show that he is or isn’t ready to contribute on a nightly basis.

New Jersey's special teams...

The Devils’ ridiculous PK which gets all the attention is a net -3. They’ve only given up 10 goals and have scored a whopping 7 SHG. That’s a 97.73% kill rate when adjusted for SHG.

But their PP is equally astounding to me. They’ve scored 17 PPG, but have given up 11 SHGA, which is more than double than the 2nd worst team in the league (5 SHGA). Their PP% when adjusted for shorties is 4.72%!

And we somehow think our PP (which is 5th in the league when adjusted for SHGA) is bad.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Dec 31, 2011 9:21 AM CST reply actions   1 recs

The Hawks entries have been underrated this season

at least by PP1. I can’t remember a Hawks team that was able to enter the zone and get set up this regularly, probably ever. It’s disappointing that they can’t find gold (and I’ve babbled enough about that at length) but they really deserve a lot more credit than they’ve been given for their entries, which is all the more impressive when you consider that this is their first season without 51.

by Scott13 on Dec 31, 2011 11:46 AM CST up reply actions

Hey John been meaning to ask

Are the Hawks really any better this year?

Since around 20 games in from last year, through the start of this year, the Hawks are around the same Shot differential. Hawks for those last 63 games were at a 106 point pace. This year they are around a 112 pace.

Most of those extra 6 points are the better production from Emery over Turco. Hossa and the team have been more healthy this year. Which is probably the rest.

You are getting secondary scoring from Stalberg instead of Bickell. But otherwise not much difference. The three middle class players (Brunette, Olesz and Frolik) have been a disappointment. Its still the core guys or bust.

The defenseman are more or less a wash with better bottom four players this year compared to last but no Campbell. So really are they any better? I mean besides a little more luck?

by DaleHalas on Dec 31, 2011 1:52 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

Almost completely agree

This is why there has been no resolution of the interpretation of last year’s team. Where they a near-elite team that suffered bad luck or a playoff also ran?

As to this year’s team- are they merely a good team that has benefitted from luck and scheduling, or are they elite?

I think both teams were/are borderline elite, prolly one piece away. This year, they may be able to address this.

The difference in the third period has been so astonishing, though, it’s hard to ascribe it completely to luck. As much as we grouse about the third pairing, it’s not the hot mess it was the first half of last year. The team feels a bit deeper, but maybe not quite as good as the team which finished last season, after they picked up Campoli.

great question though

And while I certainly know better than to discuss stats or technical matters, just based on the eye test, I like this team much better

by wardrums on Dec 31, 2011 3:16 PM CST up reply actions

That falls very much in line with my thoughts on the team

Cliff stated many of them. Last year I didn’t think they were as bad as their record indicated and this year, they’re probably not as good as it suggests. But…

Last year they were a win away from the 4th seed. As I said yesterday, I still think this is a 2nd or 4th seed team this year. They might just be closing in on the same target from different directions. (it’s obviously better to undershoot your “target” when starting from the top of the conference)

Also, I think we had more support players like Bickell, Bolland and Kopecky overperform last year. This season, Bickell and Bolland, along with Frolik, Brunette, and maybe even Monty are underperforming. I guess it depends on how you look at it, but personally I think it bodes well; seeing there may be room for improvement without even making a move.

Also, Hawks have some cap space this year. And damn, those 3rd periods. How’d that happen??

Ultimately none of this matters though. It’s not about what team is good or bad now, or even in March. It’s about who “gets hot” during the playoffs. Or so I’ve been told.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Dec 31, 2011 3:32 PM CST up reply actions

I know (think?) you're being facetious

But you don’t win 4 seven game series by getting hot at the right time. You might steal a series with a hot goalie but a 22 game hot steak is a fourth of a season. At that point you’re probably pretty damn good. Also, baby penguins are ready cute.

Glad to see the Hawks play a complete game and come out on top like they should against a pretty solid Wings team. And I loved looking at the stats on NHL.com and seeing 4 Hawks in the top 25 in points, 3 in the top 15 in goals and 2 in the top 15 in assists. Only Pitt has 3 players in the top 25 in goals, no other team has more than two in those 3 categories.

This.

Plus the lack of ice-time is killing his trade value if we want to move him at the deadline as part of a package. I can’t escape the feeling that somewhere between Q and Scotty there’s been a disconnect in how we handle defensemen this season. We’re going to need to move at least one at the deadline if we’re going to bring in another defensive piece, but the way Q has been better manipulating the marginal defensemen’s icetime hasn’t really helped anyone’s case.

game from the wings. You could certainly argue that it resulted from the frustration of being unable to contain the Hawks’ top players. If our PP was able to slip off the clown shoes this could easily have become a laugher. But all the time on the PK certainly took its toll on an aging team in the 3rd. However, I don’t see Detroit being that stupid in the next matchup.

some grudges die hard, but you have to be impressed with what they’ve done since Hitch took over. They’ve moved into the top four in the conference and just look dangerous. Candidly though, I do expect them to go through a sustained drought at some point though, much like Minnesota has recently. Affirmed won by a head, a nose, and a pube, respectively. What with the horse movie mania…

The Rockford underground says Morin is getting very pissed off that he hasn't been promoted for real

Or so say a couple of Rockford guys who catch the Icehogs that I ran into at the UC Friday night. Morin is not a happy camper and believes he has held up his end of the bargain to be in Chicago by now. I beg to disagree with his assessment because I’m one of those guys who don’t get the Morin love. To me, he’s nothing special.

I’ve watched this kid pretty closely and sorry, I don’t see the wondrous upside. Hawks can do better than a future line slot devoted to Jeremy Morin. If I were Stan then I’d be working to move Morin before the deadline while his value may still be relevant.

Morin and Frolik for a real blue-liner to pair with our pretend defenseman in Steve Montador would be nice. And no, whoever suggested Sami Lepisto is the answer please stick to the New Year’s resolution of taking all your medications.

Daryl Sutter may be dull as dirt and just as ugly, but the man knows hockey

Sutter was a GREAT hire by the Kings. Precisely what that pampered set of underachievers needed to light a fire. Kings have way too much talent to be so down. Daryl wears out his welcome ala Mike Keenan, but he will get the Kings to play the best hockey they are capable of before his tenure ends. His first order of business needs to be unlocking what Doughty should be doing on a nightily basis. Kid should be competing for the Norris trophy every season with that degree of talent.
