Sack: Hawks 5 - Blues 2

You were promised Killion, but you're gonna have to live with me. You'll live.

At the end of tonight's game, I hit St. Louis Gametime with my usual taunt that I use after a Hawks win over the Blues. You probably saw it. Sadly, I don't think I can say it above the fold here, so allow me to fill in a little space before they let me put in a break here. How are you? Everything well? Some game tonight, huh? Where'd you go to school? Yeah? Huh. Yeah? Huh. Well now that we know each other a little bit better...

Star-divide

Good, now that's over. Anyway...

Real gangsta ass n****z don't flex nuts, cuz real gangsta ass n****z know they got 'em.

The Geto Boys knew what was up, and that's what tonight felt exactly like. While the Hawks strolled into DrinkScotch Center with a lot of questions, some problems, and confidence not exactly flowing like an avalanche pouring down a mountain, the Blues entered as the hottest team in the league, claiming they finally figured it out, and ready to announce themselves as true believers.

They ran around, they tried to intimidate, they were physical, and they tried to prove something.

And then the team we love so much stepped back, smiled, grabbed their balls and asked their counterpart where theirs were. And when it counted, the Blues didn't have an answer. And damn it feels good to be a gangsta'.

So while Gametime may bleat on about how our captain in a pansy because he doesn't lose his shit trying to pick fights, or wonder why Kane needs to protected, or think that hockey games are settled by who wins the post-whistle scraps, we'll head to the exits with our two points and a firm statement about who belongs where, thank you very much.

Most satisfying win of the season? Definitely in the team photo. Everything seemed stacked against the Hawks tonight, especially after Vladimir Sobotka slew-footed Andrew Brunette leading to the go-ahead goal in the 2nd. It felt like a time when the Hawks could have totally packed it in. But no, they responded as everyone might want to see them do so. I'm gonna fucking puke the next time someone intimates that this team is weak, I really am.

Even with Pat Foley getting on his meatball soapbox about the hit stats (which is funny considering earlier monologues about how the Wings never lead in that category but are tough), the Hawks dominated the shot clock, chances chart, and scoreboard. Which would you rather?

Other thoughts:

-I was going to start these by complaining about the overriding of Keith and Seabrook. But in the 3rd, Coach Q rolled everyone, and Marlboro 72's minutes are a very understandable 23 and 22. Montador and O'Donnell may look a -2, but one came after an egregious no-call and the first goal was after an unlucky bounce from a Berglund pass.

-After that, did Berglund have a shift?

-These stats are always goofy, but the Hawks were credited with only two giveaways tonight. That'll do nicely.

-Hammer's best game of the season, and he was credited with seven blocked shots. Things look a lot better when he plays like that.

-Forgot about Marian Hossa there for a few games. What a wonderful reminder. The chase for 400 starts Monday.

-The penalty kill ended up +1, so there's an upset.

-Honestly, you can fucking have David Backes. While he's running around trying to prove his worth by being out of position and hitting everything, a real captain was kicking his ass at hockey. I'll take that.

-The only alarming thing about tonight, and that may be strong, is that the Hawks still got nothing from their bottom six other than an empty net goal. Well, that's a bit unfair. The Smith-Bolland-Frolik line was more active than the third line has been, and that's at least a start. And Stalberg had a pretty strong game even though he was moved to the fourth line after one shift.

I said we'd all feel better if the Hawks saved the good to great performance for tonight and gathered all four points on the weekend. So they did. And I feel better. You?

...cuz real gangsta ass n****z know they got 'em.

Panger said the word "trip" or "tripped-up" 5 times when he was talking about the stewart goal

and not once did he mention it was illegal or should have been penalized.

what a fucking homer.

by putmeinthemadhouse on Dec 4, 2011 1:37 AM CST reply actions

I saw the highlights on On the Fly and it was the Blows feed

Is there any play that they make that is not UNBELIEVABLE or UNREAL?

by CjSax on Dec 4, 2011 9:06 AM CST up reply actions

Yeah I watched the Blows feed

and every so called “non- call” against the Hawks was ranted about at length, but after the slew foot it was “Sobotka trips up Brunnet and Stewart scores”. And that was the last it was spoke of.

I know NFL refs get reviewed by the league and reprimanded for shitty calls but I’m not sure the NHL does or not. Anyone have an idea how it works? Not that anything would happen or change, I’m just curious about what the league has to assist refs in ensuring correct calls are made to the best of their ability in such a fast paced game.

No worries, this was the plan all along!

by Tuke on Dec 4, 2011 1:02 PM CST up reply actions

don't know either and would be interested to find out

that said, I’m always of the opinion that refs are human and make mistooks.. especially with a game as freaking fast as Hockey.. then again, that’s maybe not a point of view to air around Leafs fans.

enough of the niceties: time for the eye-gouging..
and yes, I probably *should* be asleep right now!

by mightymike D on Dec 4, 2011 1:05 PM CST up reply actions

It is a fast game

and I really wouldn’t love it as much as I do if EVERY infraction was called, but like justforkicks stated below that call was directly in front of the official and should have been called.

Oh well, maybe someone more intelligent than I will have an answer, if there is one.

No worries, this was the plan all along!

by Tuke on Dec 4, 2011 1:19 PM CST up reply actions

i'd just love for them to at least

1) have to do a refresher on the rules every so often and

2) since the games are reviewed, have shanahan or whoever on his team send them missed calls with the reasons why (like they do with suspensions or lack thereof) as a learning. And I don’t mean everything, its tough fast sport, and things will be missed. But on something like the slewfoot leading to a goal, I’d love for them to say, this happened, it was wrong, and here’s why.

"Well now you're just talking like Foghorn Leghorn!"

wasnt even that spectacuar of a goal

puck was sitting up for grabs in front of a prone emery.

whatever, probably excitement from having him back in the lineup.

by putmeinthemadhouse on Dec 4, 2011 2:11 PM CST up reply actions

Foley & Edzo

would probably be the same if it were Tazer, lucky for us our players keep their heads up when crossing the neutral zone with the puck. (for the most part. I just remembered Mitchell’s hit on Toews)

No worries, this was the plan all along!

by Tuke on Dec 4, 2011 2:20 PM CST up reply actions

Mitchel just jumped out of the penalty box though.

It’s pretty easy to lose where players are located on the ice when he, basically, magically appears 4 feet in front of you. That being said, Toews had his head buried.

I meant the meme

by mad-hatter on Dec 4, 2011 4:45 PM CST up reply actions

Worst was when they were talking about "everything"

Perron has accomplished at only age 23. “It’s just unreal, unbelievable.” Unless of course, you are comparing his achievements to one Jonathan Toews or one Patrick Kane.

And… Bernie Federko is a fucking loser. Listening to him talk about himself is like listening to ex-Islanders piss and moan about all the extra attention the 80’s Oiler’s got over them. Grow up, you were a hell of a player and that’s cool. You don’t need to remind the viewer 3 or 4 times a game.

Getting the Centre Ice Blues feed is one of the worst things I have to sit through during the winter. Darryl Reaugh on the Dallas feed though? Solid gold. I’ll tune into Stars games just to listen to some of the classic shit he comes up with.

You are next.

between two freaking blogs. hiding behind screen names is fun isnt it?

just wanted to thank justforkicks and Mike Martin for being able to have a civilized rivalry. i feel bad if they have to hang around some of these hate filled fans.

i dont always condone stuff that happens over at SLGT, but for this blog to go ape shit about it is rather comical.

anyways, i enjoy the blues vs. blackhawks rivalry. cant wait til the next game in february. good luck til then.

..on a side note, im sure a majority of you all are cubs fans, just as a majority of us are cardinal fans. just take that into consideration before making a hilariously clever slam on the blues losing ways compared to the hawks recent championship.

Unmentioned is that Goal #1 was a play that didn't have to happen

certainly, the penalty was missed on that score, but Emery shouldn’t have played the puck — icing was to be called.

Actually they showed

the Linesman’s arm go up and then down real quick and icing was waved off so Razer was correct in playing the puck. Sobotka was incorrect in slew footing Bruno for goal #2. Goal #1 was just a lucky bounce that came right to Perron.

I have a few questions about tonight's game

first was Bolland technically offisides on Hossa’s shorty?

second how many fucking times have we seen Frolik set up for a one-timer, get the pass, put the puck on goal and then not get a goal. Is this bad shot placement, bad luck, excellent goal tending or all of he above.

by HockeyFTW on Dec 4, 2011 2:54 AM CST reply actions

Bolly was good on that play

Looking at the video, his left foot was behind the blue line until Hossa crossed over. He was smart enough to wait a few seconds.

As for Fro, I’d sad bad shot placement. Apparently someone has to fill in for Bicks that way.

Tootoo: when I first saw the clip, I thought he wanted to cut back in front of AHRM, but Erhoff’s push directed him at Miller, and the leap was a split-second flail, more douchebaggery than goonery. But given Tootoo’s history (ask Frolik among others), I say throw the book at him.

Fistric: looks like he ticked every box on Shan’s list and more

SLGT: first and last visit there. As a whole, it sure hits the daily double, lacking both decency and iq

Oh God, that’s what I spent all night doing, although it was more in reaction to a stomach flu. First time in a long time I really, honestly didn’t care what happened in the Hawks game, although I was thankfully able to enjoy the first two periods.

by TKHO on Dec 4, 2011 6:07 AM CST reply actions

the thing is...

the Hawks aren’t not weak on certain nights. It’s not the word I would use to pick apart our chosen team’s weakness, but getting grinded down during the course of a game can sometimes be a concern with this team.

And then the team we love so much stepped back, smiled, grabbed their balls and asked their counterpart where their’s were. And when it counted, the Blues didn’t have an answer. And god damn it feels good to be a gangsta’.

Come on, Sam! Get the lyrics right!

"...but the devil lives inside this kid, I swear it. It rises out of him in a mist, this baby-faced defiant wrathful version of Pat Kane, escapes his bodily confines to perform satanic miracles all over the offensive zone. The only thing more fearsome than that assist was the keep-in preceding it. The only thing more unholy than his face is his black magic." ~gmh

A team wim marked by effort.................

…makes those "I don’t give a shit nights "that much worse.

Can Bolland and a couple of other players bring that intensity to 2 out of 3 games???

When Carcillo is on those top lines being…“Carcillo” …the top lines play better.

Is Kruger our new second center? He is getting better and better.

To me I haven’t seen Stal take a night off..Wish I could say that about other players….

What's a Bickell?

This:

A team win marked by effort makes those “I don’t give a shit nights” that much worse.

They played a great team game last night. Hammer, without question, played his best game of the season; perhaps of the last two seasons. Knowing this team can play like this is what makes it so frustrating and aggravating when they don’t play up to their abilities. As CCM suggests, if we got 2 out 3 like this I think all we “meatheads” would be very content.

Good win you Blackhawks! Keep it up!!

Size, physical play and decent skill. Rip him all you want but he is a solid player.

Not saying that he isn't

I would want Backes with Q in his ear about not running all over the ice and actually playing smart-checking hockey.

That being said, i also wouldn’t rip the C off of Toews’ chest to pin it on Backes’ hell, on the Hawks I wouldn’t even have Backes wearing an A

Am I paranoid? I don't know. I went to a therapist once, but I left before he gave me the diagnosis, cause he had it out for me.

That guy needs to be put into the seats next time, period – but the team finally responded like we haven’t seen against the Blues (at least in STL) in over two years. I wanted them to respond in kind when that kind of crapola started, and this time notice was served. Not a bad game by Emery

and I give him credit. However, the real difference is that we had some D show up in front of him for a change. Emery left some juicy rebounds and St.L missed some opportunities, but the D was there to clean up the mess. If Crow had that level of support in front of him I don’t think his numbers would be quite so much dog shit.

by Jrs23 on Dec 4, 2011 1:21 PM CST up reply actions

He made some key saves on some redirects

and one that really stands out came from the left half boards and was centered to a guy in the low slot who directed the puck right on net but Emery was there. He was sharp and tracked the puck well, even with some of the big bodies the Blues put in front of him. Good game for him to build on.

Also, fuck your fantasy team this week. I need the Lanche to light up Howard tonight.

by Scott13 on Dec 4, 2011 3:17 PM CST up reply actions

I thought the forwards

really contributed to the defensive effort and would like to see Razer get a few starts if for nothing other than to give Crow a break for a while to shake whatever has gotten into him.

No worries, this was the plan all along!

by Tuke on Dec 4, 2011 1:22 PM CST up reply actions

I know a lot of people will disagree with me...

…but I think that Crow’s struggles have led the guys around him to tighten up. When a goalie gives up softies early in the game (which has been a Crow specialty lately) it has a trickle down effect.

They got a nice breather last night with Emery in there. And while I don’t think he’s anywhere near a long term answer, I wouldn’t have a problem with him getting more ice time for now at least.

Chicken/egg thing.

I don’t think a lot of people would disagree with you on that. I agree they should give Emery another start and see how things work out. You’re right, he’s not long term answer but if he can just get Crow thinking about losing the starting job and refocus on his technique Emery’s doing his job…

Thank you, sir! May I have another?

by Badgerdano on Dec 4, 2011 1:45 PM CST up reply actions

I completely agree of the chicken/egg part...

Like I said, I’m not advocating giving him the starting job but I also don’t think that riding Craw hard is going to do much good (it hasn’t so far).

I think this team’s long term success is ultimately going to fall on Crawford so maybe it’s better to give him some now to work on his game, especially if Emery continues to play like he did last night.

Fair enough, early lead then.

But whatever is causing Crow and our defense to shit the bed at the same time doesn’t have to do with a lack of team confidence in each other. Last night it looks like we might have figured something out as far as whole team defensive effort goes. Rest Crow Monday and have him figure some things out then bring him back Thursday.

'Struth

I remember hearing pretty often Turco was left hung our to dry last season and that he was better than his record. Maybe a couple of anomalous games wouls be acceptable, but a longer run means there is a real problem, either in team chemistry or on an individual level.

Maybe it's booze, maybe it's glue, maybe it's gasoline. Maybe it's a gunshot to the head. But something. Something to relieve the pressures of their everyday life, like having to tie their shoes.

A couple of thoughts from last night:

One poster asked if we could have won the game with Crow in net. Better to ask if we could have won against a team with a decent PP. The first goal was one Emery should not have given. As another poster said, if he’s hugging the post, that goal is impossible.

So while I’d like to see Razr in net, I’m find with Crow on Monday.

I plan to live forever, or die trying.

this story will help maybe

First family outing I went to, and one of her cousins came up to me and said…“so you’re from Chicago, huh?” Then he waited two beats and said “I went there once…DIDN’T LIKE IT!!!!” As if I was supposed to be mortally offended by his comment, or that I gave two shits about his opinion. He actually turned out to be a decent guy, but the demarcation line begins at Peoria, everything south of that line is the Confederacy.

Out of curiosity...

What was the atmosphere like when the Bears had to play an entire season in Champaign a few years back (when Soldier was getting reno’d)? Does that vibe exist there too or is it kind of different because Illinois is the the big “state” school and maybe a little more “blue” politically?

I just ask because I’m not from the area and find it intruguing although not that surprising.

You are next.

by M7 on Dec 5, 2011 1:33 PM CST up reply actions

great question

maybe I’m imagining things, but I get a bit of an anti-Chicago vibe from Champaign.

In most big ten states, the flagship school unifies people from across the state. But U of I is not a big deal in Chicago, where the sports focus is on the pro teams. Even among college fans, allegiances are split because of DePaul, Northwestern etc. Also, Chicago draws people from all around the Midwest. Walking around downtown, I prolly see as much or more Notre Dame, Michigan, MSU, Iowa, Wisconsin memorabilia as Illinois.

I have some clients out in western Illinois for whom U of I has totemic significance, but I just don’t see that in Chicago.

I think non-Chicago Illinoisians like it that way. It’s like U of I is their thing, the one thing they can rally around that isn’t on Chicago’s radar. It kinda reminds me of the World Cup in soccer. Part of the attraction, it seems to me, is that the whole world can get together while the fucking Americans aren’t paying attention for once.

Curious what others’ impressions are though.

We like our people!

by cliffkoroll on Dec 5, 2011 1:50 PM CST up reply actions

I know what you mean about school colours flying around town.

My first trip to Chicago I was visiting a couple Canadian buddies who went to Michigan State and settled down in Chicago. I suggested a pub as a place to watch a game and their immediate reaction was, “No, no, no – that’s a place where all the Michigan fans hang-out”. Not implying that anything bad would happened to them if they went there, just that they didn’t want to sit amongst the memorabilia if thy didn’t have to. In subsequent trips I’ve really noticed it a lot more. My non-qualified eyes would have Michigan, ND, Wisconsin and State as the top 4 (or at least the loudest 4) in no particular order.

So, back to the Bears thing then… why didn’t they just play at Ryan Field? Or is it just considered too small/out-of-date for an NFL team, even if only temporary?

You are next.

you just gotta look. But then again, I’ve got a bro in law blues fan who rooted for the cafucks last year. I’m used to the whining

Not gonna happen, I have a new appreciation for NM

We give you guys a lot of grief, but at the end of the day your site does a good job talking hockey. Unlike the wretched hive of scum and villainy at SLGT. Just bad human beings.

"What is icing?"

"Well, uh... icing appen when uh the puck come down... bang, you know, before the other guys, nobody there, you know. My arm go comme ça then the game stop then start up."

what. the. hell

Turkish hockey brawl where the riot police had to be called in and players were injured.

"Well now you're just talking like Foghorn Leghorn!"

The slash to the players head was the scariest part of the fight. What respectable human being does that?

by aeroplane on Dec 4, 2011 5:17 PM CST up reply actions

No respectable humans do that.

Plenty of human garbage piles do stuff like that (Bertuzzi, McSorley, Lemieux, etc.)

Maybe it's booze, maybe it's glue, maybe it's gasoline. Maybe it's a gunshot to the head. But something. Something to relieve the pressures of their everyday life, like having to tie their shoes.

That looked like an outtake from Slap Shot

Then again with how empty the stands were it could have been a Hawks game circa 2005

No worries, this was the plan all along!

by Tuke on Dec 4, 2011 5:18 PM CST up reply actions

Ouch

Hope there are no serious injuries. I wonder what kind of punishment you hand out to brawls like that.

by mad-hatter on Dec 4, 2011 6:02 PM CST up reply actions

Ah... the game is in its infancy in Turkey.

This stuff will clear up in the next few decade’s.

You are next.

For anyone else who was there, what do you think the crowd was in terms of Hawks/Blues fans. I thought it was about 40% Hawks fans, and that is a conservative estimate.

by jeff021690 on Dec 4, 2011 5:14 PM CST reply actions

Nice

I was there as well, and would say almost 50-50. We scored sweet seats behind the penalty boxes and plenty of red sweaters. First time I see Hawks on the road, and a good time was had by all.

by mojitousa on Dec 5, 2011 5:49 PM CST up reply actions

took* fail.

It went on for a good 20 minutes. The faces of the Blues fans walking by was priceless.

I accidentally found OD's ex-wife on IMDB

Had to post this as it was so random. I was hopping through pages, clicked on Allison Dunbar because I thought I recognized the name (I think I was mistaken, I don’t seem familiar with her work) but her bio says she was married to our D-man. Quite attractive

You know how teams will just shoot the puck down the ice at the very end of the period, just as a last shot thing?

Well, Ty Conklin just let one of those 180-foot shots in….but it was well after the buzzer. Would have been awesome if it counted.

Is it just me...

or is the rivalry with vancouver dwindling. Don’t get me wrong I hate that team probably more than any other team in the league. At the same time there hasn’t been a real chippy game between those teams in a while and with the potential new realignment it seems like the writing is kind of on the wall.

by lobster on Dec 4, 2011 11:06 PM CST reply actions

not a chippy game?

you didnt see the last two affairs? and the series last season?

by putmeinthemadhouse on Dec 4, 2011 11:09 PM CST up reply actions

It's just you.

If you haven’t noticed, the last few encounters between the two teams have been quite heated affairs. Rivalry diminishing? You either need to drink a lot more or a lot less, because your current state of imbibement has clearly clouded your judgment.

"...but the devil lives inside this kid, I swear it. It rises out of him in a mist, this baby-faced defiant wrathful version of Pat Kane, escapes his bodily confines to perform satanic miracles all over the offensive zone. and the reward is much greater when we beat them, but I really enjoy the Vancouver games a lot.

Pretty good weekend

I was dreading it — especially the game with STL last night. Watched it on delay and it was a great way to end the night. Those 4 points look good in the standings, and no one will remember how bad that game was against the Isles come April. I’ve already forgotten about it.

Now about those f-ing Bears….SHITSHOW.

It's on, bitches.

Not a good effort against the Chiefs. No Cutler, no Forte … not good for Chicago down the stretch here.

I was at that game

First time ever at a Bears game and it had to be that piece of shit. The Hail Mary thing happened right in front of me. You know things are bad when the crowd is calling for Josh McCown and Kordell Stewart.

And now people know how important Jay Cutler is to the Bears and should end all those “debates” about him. He’s one of the better QB’s in the game, hopefully now the city of Chicago can realize that and embrace him … and management to get him another receiver besides Earl Bennett.

I’ve been going to Bears games for more than 40 years. Some pretty bad teams. Yesterday may have been the worst Bears game I’ve ever seen.

so, get back on that horse. unless it was YOUR fault.

Worst game I could remember since the mid-70’s or early 80’s – and I said that after the 1st half. Two brutal teams in a battle of ineptitude. Bears need Mike Phipps.
