Didn't We Deserve A Look At You The Way You Really Are: Blackhawks 3 - Islanders 2

Well this game was somewhat familiar, wasn't it? After seeming to cruise for most of the first and second periods on their way to taking a 2-0 lead, the Blackhawks found a way to let the Islanders back into the game to force overtime only to pull it out in the end (something that Sharp doesn't do anymore evidently, HEYO!) so that we can all go home happy.

While the game was pretty even and had a good back and forth going in the first, it wasn't until a mad scramble in front of the net that had Al Montoya employ the classic "just play dead and hope the puck ends up under your pads" routine that the Hawks were able to pull ahead. It wasn't on the scramble but rather off the faceoff. Hossa goes behind the net and seemed to try to pass the puck to Toews but instead the puck bounces off Montoya and Hoss gets #400. Not exactly Jeter hitting a home run for 3,000... but it'll due in a pinch. There's always time for something special when #500 comes.

Early in the second, Hossa enters the ice and finds one Patrick Sharp who once again was able to find soft patches of ice at the top of the circle. Very poor coverage by Jurcina and the rest of the Islanders as Sharp had all the time in the world. Not that he's use it though - he unleashed a bomb of a slapper that I doubt Montoya even saw.

Tides would turn though as the Islanders didn't panic and stuck to a solid if unremarkable game. They were rewarded when P.A. Parenteau found Travis Hamonic entering the zone with plenty of room to fire a slapper. I don't think I heard Pat or Eddie mention it but I thought the puck seemed to bounce off Hammer and take a turn to the left to beat Emery. My computer sucks for watching replays though so I can't see if that's the case... what say you?

In the third the Michael Grabner had his chance to unleash a slapshot that Emery never saw (even long after it was in the net) and the game would go to overtime. Not before other shenannigans.. but we'll get to that later. In the end though, it was dat Horsa guy again who horsed Steve Staios and took a hard low shot that bounced right off Montoya's pads to a charging Shooter... game.

Lets get to the bullets:

  • Due to the smaller bench and entrances to the locker rooms, Corey Crawford had a damn near perfect spot to watch Ray Emery chip away at Crow's once rock solid position as starter. I'm in no way calling for a goalie controversy again but if Razor can keep this up we won't worry too much about Crawford taking some time to find his game.

Ray was by no means perfect and got a lot of help.. particularly on the approximately 15 times he slid 10 or more feet away from the crease.. but he still had a close to stellar game and made many key saves, mostly in the first, that kept the Hawks in it.
  • One of the things that helped Emery most may have been the play of the top 4 defensemen in front of him. Keith and Seabrook were once again solid but it Hjalmarsson that caught my eye most. There were moments of panic in his game but they were few and far between. Instead, I saw him play a more physical game (huge hit on teammate-for-a-day Marty Reasoner) and even a few moments of patience behind the net despite a forechecker on his back. More of this Hammer.
  • There's few things more annoying than a guy who just yells "shooot" at games. The only thing might be a guy yelling "hit someone!". Still, the Hawks do seem just a tad bit too pass happy at the moment. Sure, if those passes get through the 3 defenders between the two Hawks.. boom. But they aren't getting through, are they? The OT goal was a prime example.. a hard low shot.. a rebound and what do you know? A goal.
  • I think Pat Foley and Eddie-O only just now realized that Toews is also really really good at faceoffs. I think they mentioned it every time he won a draw, which was only half the time tonight. Only 50% and not a single point... pshh, who said you deserve a night off? Dick
  • Michael Frolik had another solid game tonight. His play is stepping up lately and he's thriving with Bolland. His stick check that broke up a solid chance for Tavares late in the game isn't a moment that most of us will remember for the rest of the season but it very well could have saved the game.
  • You knew I would come to it eventually right? With the game tied and only about 3:30 in the game, Daniel Carcillo decided to get a little slap happy. It was only a shift prior that he had been hit hard in the corner and shoved to ice, causing me to say this. So when there was a scramble in front of the net and he came charging in, you knew there would be trouble. Sure enough, Carbomb lands a jab on someone (Okposo?) and gets 2 minutes. Absolutely unaccpetable. It was clear that the Isles were trying to entice him and he had no trouble taking the bait. Carcillo has had plenty of good moments but these poor decision ones are quickly adding up.
  • But hey! It's ok! Our PK is evidently good again, killing all 6 opportunities. Including the dreaded near 2 minute 5-on-3. It was a phantom bad luck call on Kaner and an obvious high stick from Bolland but the Hawks had the advantage of it being broken up by an intermission.

Player Of The Game:

Hossasuit_medium

There were a few options here - Shooter had those two goals and a helper. Emery was solid but it was the Hoss that ended up the big winner with 400 goals and a very pretty steal and helper for the winner. He's Marian Hos...you know it by now..

Carcillo can fuck right off.

Seriously. Short of buying people a break from pundits demanding more ‘toughness’ in lineup, I haven’t seen him provide anything of merit.

If Leddy and Hammer continue to improve and build chemistry, then I think a REAL top 6 winger is definitely on the shopping list for the trade deadline.

Other than that, no complaints really.

bah! rabble rabble rabble...

Do you have anything constructive to say ever? Carcillo has been more good than bad, and for under a million for a guy that can add some sandpaper to the bottom 6 and slide up to skate with the top six, there is no way he’ll get shopped.

Agreed.

The penalty itself was something that doesn’t get called if it’s Marian Hossa or even Viktor Stalberg. Carcillo was getting double teamed and gave a guy a little jab in the face.

I thought it was bad only because it was Carcillo, and there’s never been a time in his life when Carcillo would not have been called for that, and because of that he should have known better. If the socre was 4-2, I’ll give him a pass. But I thought it was really bad, actually … because he knows those calls will always go agasint him, no matter how “violent”.

I hated Carcillo

and by hate I mean hate. I was among the most vocal when the signing was made that I thought it was an aboslutely asinine move by Bowman.

But there’s no question that, on balance, he has been more good than bad. Last night’s late penalty was his first truly brainless penalty (I’m willing to admit that I may have missed one or two others).

You seem to enjoy blanket statements, though … maybe to you they make your arguments sound stronger, I odn’t know.

by ChicoMaki on Dec 9, 2011 9:08 AM CST up reply actions

I look at Carcillo, and there’s no questioning his eagerness on the ice. He makes mistakes, but he’s not the Carcillo that played in Philly, not that I can see. Biases aside, I think we’re a less hostile group than Philly, and maybe that’s what made Carcillo a bad fit there.

But to compare him with Bickell, say—and I realize they’re very differnt players—but a player with Bickell’s size and offensive ceiling … there’s no reason in the world he shouldn’t “look” like Carcillo on every shift, skating balls out and hitting everything in sight without getting out of position. Any points after that are gravy.

by ChicoMaki on Dec 9, 2011 9:37 AM CST up reply actions

Carcillo has been a pleasant surprise

Initially, I couldn’t stand the thought of him on this roster, but I have come around. He plays with what I would call unrestrained enthusiasm and his fellow players appear to like him. Playing for a disciplinarian like Q, I think, has helped keep his boneheadedness to a minimum. He has added some grit, speed, and surprising skill to this roster. If he can offset some of the stupid shit he’s known for with solid contributions to the top lines (like he has done thus far), then I can certainly overlook some of his foolishness. That being said, I was a little irked by the timing of his penalty. He needs to do a little better job of keeping his emotions in check.

See if you can guess what I am now.

by IndianHeadCrest on Dec 9, 2011 9:46 AM CST up reply actions

And right now he's back on the 4th with a few chip ins on top lines

He has been better than expected and hasn’t taken as many dumb ass calls. The one thing now I’m looknig for is some contributions from the bottom 2 lines. While the Bolland line has been playing better, I hope the bottom 6 can find the back of the net so that way we dont always count on the top if they go through a slump

Why Q, why?!

by Jrs23 on Dec 9, 2011 9:49 AM CST up reply actions

I agree, kind of. There aren’t many teams whose bottom two lines contribute both consistently and significantly. Minnesota has it, clearly, and Philly a little less so, and Boston. none others that I can think of. I’d be ecstatic if Bolland and Co. just held their own and played even, and if we could rely on the fourth line for 9 or 10 minutes a night (which is a bit of a pipedream, I realize).

by ChicoMaki on Dec 9, 2011 9:56 AM CST up reply actions

www.mjt.org

by ChicoMaki on Dec 9, 2011 9:50 AM CST up reply actions

haha Eager on a top line

Shoot me now, while I agree on the bottom 2 lines to an extent. I’m not expecting them to score night in and out. They are there for a reason with the Bolland line playing well, they control the puck and stop the other teams top lines. While I still think that line can net at least 20 goals a season. The 4th you can’t expect that much from guys only playing 7-10 minutes a game. For that line to score is a bonus, but I would like at least that Bolland line to chip in a little more on the offense side but by no means would I want that if it takes away from what they are doing to prevent the other teams top lines.

Why Q, why?!

I don't see Smith as a top 6 guy

admittedly, I was a little smitten with his playoff performance last spring, but in the end I think he’s a much better fit for a bottom 6 role than a top 6. I think he’s doing really well with Bolland and Frolik right now, and that’s really where he should stay. If the ’Hawks can find one more top 6 forward, preferably a power forward type guy, on the trade market that would be awesome

If Smith were to play regularly on Bolland's line for a full season

I can see him getting in the vicinity of 10 goals and an equal number of assists. If he wound up with 15-20 points for a season in addition to playing a solid defensive/checking game that would be just fine.

You're talking about Kruger being out of position on the Isles 2nd goal, right?

I dvr’d the game and watched later. I noticed on that goal, after several watchings, that just before the puck came out to the point for the shot all five Hawks were below the top of the circle on one side of the zone, with Sharp (I think) the only Hawk in front of the net defending the slot.
This is a repeated problem for the Hawks in their own zone. They have a tendency to over play/pursue and leave lots of open areas behind the play for opposing players to exploit for good shot/scoring opportunities. A little more positonal discipline in their own zone would go a long way toward cutting down on good scoring chances for their opponents.

I meant Agent Smith, but it was on the first goal., not the second.

He was on left wing- Leddy made the crappy chip play up the boards. Smith came all the way across the ice before realizing he was out of position. He backed off into the center of the ice, in a position sure to do no harm to anybody. But he was hypnotized by the puck.. He never turned around to see the d-man entering the zone behind his back until it was too late.

Pfftt on the goalie 'controversy'

Same people who’re all ‘yay, Emery!’ were the same people asking ’Why’d Chicago sign him?’ when he got pulled, or looks shaky because of flexibility/mobility, or made bad plays on previous games. The minute he blows a game, it’ll be ‘booo! trade Emery!’

He looked solid tonight, but then again, as noted, he also got caught out of the net several times and was rescued by the D. Why doesn’t the D show up consistently every night? That’s the bigger issue.

Q-speak after the game suggests that Emery might start again on Sunday – Q always plays the hot hand, after all – but then again, Crawford also just played 1-0 vs the Sharks two weeks ago. (That Crawford vs Niemi storyline is always fun.)

Partially because of the Craw vs Niemi thing but also because I fear the Sharks are too good for Emery. And yes, he isn’t very mobile laterally, despite tonight’s performance, but that’s what happens when you’re missing a chunk of bone in your leg.

But the Hawks PP is up to 9th at 19.44% and the PK is “up” to 27th at 76.92. This is after the PP was below 10% until a few weeks back, and the PK had been below 75% for a couple weeks as well. The Special teams sum is now at 96.36, for a long while it was hovering around 90-91. It takes more to get PK numbers up then PP numbers, but the trends are nice.

Thank god the 'Hawks killed it off

but that 5-on-3 was complete crap. First off the penalty on Kane was absolute bullshit – talk about a weak call. I didn’t actually see the Bolland high stick, but I was at the game and missed it and they didn’t show the replay on the scoreboard, but when I saw the ref’s hand go up I thought it was because Leddy was getting hooked like crazy going into the corner to get the puck off the faceoff.

Agreed, Kane's trip to the sin bin

was not deserved. On the other hand, Bolly got and deserved his right at the faceoff dot.

I don't doubt that Bolland's high stick was legitimate

I was just saying I didn’t see it, I was focused on Leddy getting the shit hooked out of him at the same time that the refs completely ignored.

That's all well and good that the high stick call on Bolland was a legit call

but that doesn’t take away from the facts that

a) the call on Kane was about as week as they come

b) going into the corner to get the puck off the face off, Leddy was getting hooked worse than a terrible act during open mic night at the Apollo

Bolland call was too legit to quit.

His stick got up there and then he just gave the guy a butt-end to the face. Everyone is bitching about the Caricllo penalty, the Bolland one was about 50 times worse as it put the Hawks on an almost 2 minute 5-3 PK.

One guy who I thought had a good game was Kruger

drove the net on our 2nd goal opening it up for the pass to Sharpie. He’s bound to actually get points eventually playing with Hoss and Sharp. Until then he keeps doing a lot of the right things. Then again, it was the plan all along.

I'm liking what I've been seeing out of the plan all along

and he’s clearly made a good impression on Q – started the year in Rockford, called up game 2 and spent time on the 4th line, promoted to wing on Bolland’s line, and now he’s playing 2C between Sharp and Hossa. That’s a pretty damn quick rise in just 29 games, and it says to me that despite the fact that the points aren’t coming yet Q clearly likes what he’s been seeing from Kruger both in games and his hard work in practice.

Shot charts from NYI

It is interestinhg to me that me witnessed the return of Esquire02 in prime goalie contoversy form last night. Take a look at the shot charts from CBS below. they are actually inverse(?). For example Hossa’s goal was from the opposite as was the NYI 3rd period goal. So, flip it. Laarmers conclusions after the graphics

1st period

2nd period

3rd period

Much better job by the team covering/not alowing too many shots from the mid slot. Some wonkyness in the 2nd around the net though. Emery must have been on his head. Ummmm, no. Anyway my observation is that 2 goals went in from too far out. Screens and tips, correct? .939 sv% should get Emery another start, but he was helped by his friends on regular skates. I say if Craw was in the net for this one very similar outcome, but he wasn’t. It was Emery, so give him the next and the next and the next, until a back to back or he falls to his .890.

All around solid game by the looks of this.

ESPN has a similar shot chart

may be more accurate. Even has hits and penalties along with the shots.

This looks more accurate to me, but it is ESPN, so you decide.

If you follow the link you can click to add in the hits, etc. this is just showing the shots.

look how many shots the Islanders got from the middle of the ice. I still think the defensive effort was rather poor last night but I’ll fall in line with anyone that insists we should be happy about last night’s win and move on.

I do expect a much better effort against the Sharks. This team seems to step it up against elite competition (even if they do lose)

by aeroplane on Dec 9, 2011 8:38 AM CST up reply actions

I think that the biggest criticism of this team

is that they display a frustrating tendency to play down to the level of their competition. This ‘Hawks team is capable of skating with and beating any team in the league, but often times against weaker teams they just don’t play as well as they’re capable of

by FrankStallone on Dec 9, 2011 8:41 AM CST up reply actions

I think the CBS one is better

first off, the ESPN one is IMO a little more confusing because unlike the CBS one the shots and goals are laid over the logo of the team that allowed them instead of the team that shot them – ‘Hawks shots and goals are over the Islanders logo and vice versa. Also, it’s still mirrored

There are three types of people in this world: those who can count, and those who can't.

by FrankStallone on Dec 9, 2011 8:39 AM CST up reply actions

Only Hossa's goal is mirrored

Computer probably can’t deal with a shot from below the goal line being a goal. If you mouse over at the site Hossa’s goal is the one at the corner of the old style square crease.

BUT you don’t shoot at your own goal. That big Hawk there is Emery. He covers a lot of ice.

by laaarmer on Dec 9, 2011 8:41 AM CST up reply actions

No, all 3 of the 'Hawks goals are mirrored

In reality all three of them came from the left side of the ice (from the vantage point of standing at the blue line facing the goal) whereas the graphic shows all 3 coming from the right side

Went through this yesterday with CNS

If you are going to throw away a shitty game for Emery, then you have to throw away 2 shitty games for Craw. CGY and VAN. His stats go way up too.

This is a bogus way of going about using stats and reeks of making stats prove your point. The numbers are what they are.

This, exactly

It’s not like Lepisto didn’t have his bad/rusty moments, but he can make up for the occasional hiccup with his speed. He almost turned the puck over early in the game, but was able to close the gap quickly and get the puck out of the zone.

All things being equal, I’ll take the 6th Dman who can actually move his feet.
