Blackhawks @ Capitals: Third Period Thread

Hide me from next February. I've grown fat and I've grown tired.  Kick my ass I was once admired.  I've grown tired and I've grown fat but there's one more thing so much better than that, I'm already gone.

But he got hot a little late for the Hart. Remember how this team played for a large majority of the season. He is in the running. Personally I think it goes to Stamkos. Kesler and both Sedins are in the discussion as well. Crosby would have been.

by 815Sox on Mar 13, 2011 2:07 PM CDT up reply actions

Disagree.

Stamkos and Kesler are probably in the mix but if we’re looking at the final 3, I’m placing bets on Stamkos, Toews, and Sedin. Kesler doesn’t have the wide support that the Sedin sisters do.

You do need a consistent one though. Niemi, and Leighton weren’t the “hottest” of netminders but they were more than solid in the post-season last year and weren’t, for the most part, prone to the “bad goal against” until the Finals.

If you’re buying what Milbury and McGuire were feeding you today then so be it. An improved defence doesn’t win Stanley Cups, a great defence does. Big difference. Just look at Anaheim in 2007, Detroit in 2008, Pittsburgh 2009, and Chicago 2010 and now look at the Capitals … spot the difference?

Even before that. That penalty was drawn due to their inability to clear the zone as both defencemen handled the puck like it was a “llve grenade” which led to Hossa getting the puck in the offensive zone which led to the hooking call.

How about Wideman’s “blind play” against Brouwer which led to the Frolik chance? Sharp (he of 34 goals) left all alone in front after another defensive giveaway? Way too many holes in that Capitals defence more me to consider them to be “Stanley Cup calibre”. Just my opinion though.

Whatever you want to call, I never suggested "they weren't trying"

“lack of effort” or “tiredness” I don’t care what you want to fucking call it. Again, they have not been able to play complete games all year. Unlike last year. They won games because they were consistent. Maybe they are just tired because they won the fucking cup last year.

And “lack of effort” is not as stupid of a suggestion as a NHL League led conspiracy against your team. Not by a fucking long shot.

by 815Sox on Mar 13, 2011 2:18 PM CDT up reply actions

You're blowing things out of proportion

Nobody suggested that. It’s a common complaint that refs can introduce a slight home-team bias in games, and it’s a subconscious thing, not a conspiracy.

Gotta disagree

People making comments like

" Seriously, the ref’ing in this league gets worse and worse and remains biased against the Hawks."

Or

“It would have been a penalty if it was a Hawk”

or

“The refs are out to get the Hawks”

suggest far more than a subtle subconscious lean towards the home team. Its not just on this board that I hear this shit either.

Some Canadians suggest that the refs are harder than them. Some suggest the NHL always wants the Wings to win. Its all stupid.

Had a great sequence doing that early

but all of our D men have been jumping into the play even early in the game (especially noticeable: Campbell as always, plus Campoli and Seabrook being opportunistic). Do we really want Leddy to add to that too? We give up a lot of odd man rushes as it is.

Observations from the Rink

First of all, God I hate Caps fans. Least knowledgeable bunch of hacks I’ve had the misfortune of watching games with. Fuck and them.

Secondly, Nick Leddy – time to grow up, kid. He still looks a little gunshy at times, and while he played well today for the most part, he was caught staring on the third goal. With other d-men banged up, he’s gonna have to be reliable. Time to mature fast.

Power Play is clown shoes; even with the goal in the last minute, just dangerous to watch all around. PK had its bozo moments as well.

Craw played very well and deserved better, but he has to nab one of those first period goals.

Finally, the first line was just off tonight. Boudreau matched up with them and the guys didn’t really have an answer. Kaner looked at his invisible, dilletante worst. On the road in the playoffs strength must beat strength and it was noticeable how not-noticeable Toews-Kane-Sharp was against the Caps’ checkers. The fact is this game could have been three nothing if Holtby doesn’t give up three weak goals.

Turn around and get ready for San Jose boys.

God I hate the Northern Virginia – I mean “Washington” crowd.

Good observations

I think every fanbase with a bandwagon portion (ours included) will come off that way — I guess you have a right to be annoyed but I don’t put much stock in it.

Really excited about Leddy in the next couple years.

I don’t understand this team’s PP. Hope Havy finds the PK still fixable this year; Craw is tired.

And I really like your point about the top line — I was just thinking this in the 3rd period. Of course then Toews goes and scores that goal, so…

by VerStig on Mar 13, 2011 2:35 PM CDT up reply actions

As far as the PK goes,

the forwards need to start blocking shots and please, please, please, stop collapsing to help the defence down low as it’s leaving the point shots wide open. It’s open season on Crawford on the PK as any team seems to get their point shots through and at 100 mph uncontested.

Nick Leddy was born in 1991...

Again, he was born in 1991. He has matured very quickly, but he is not a miracle worker. He has a great hockey sense, and I think that is the only reason he has done so well. I just think you are being a little too harsh on him.

Thanks for the observations though.

Leddy is smallish still

His body hasn’t filled out yet and it’s not in the type of condition that’s going to allow him to neutralize bigger opponents.

I’ve been harsh on the kid but I think he’s done a great job considering his age and limitations. I choose to be patient with him.

haven't seen much on Sharp in this thread, maybe it was in the others

Sharp was flat out awful today, and not just because of the biff that lead to the shorthanded goal. He just had a soft game, he was no where to be found along the boards and didn’t do much to help Kane or Toews.

So Q notices this, and replaces him with Bickell for one shift. I just don’t get why Troy Brouwer doesn’t get a few shifts with DDN when Sharp isn’t having much of a game. Brouwer should’ve spent the whole third period on the first line.

Once again you beat me to the punch...

Sharp was in “float mode” all day and did absolutely nothing all game. Maybe with Bolland out he thought he’d be given the reigns of the second line centre, but Frolik has flat out a better option the past few games.

Brouwer over Bickell seems to be the new Dowell over Kopecky. I won’t debate it or acknowledge it as it comes down to Q and how he sees the two fit. Brouwer should’ve been there, but that’s just me and you apparently.

Sharp's disappointed for a few games now

I wonder if somebody stole Q’s line generator and he didn’t know what to do the past couple months when he kept everything the same.

i think most people would agree actually

that brouwer should be up with DDN if Sharp is out. And with Sharp playing how he has been, I hope that change comes soon.

that brouwer should be up with DDN, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Bickell preferred up there.

Brouwer should have definitely been moved up there

Not sure why Bickell was, even for a shift. Sharp has been off for a few games now, not sure what his deal is, but he needs to get back to how he was when 10-19-88 was seriously clicking, or be moved elsewhere.

Sharp was one ugh after another.

The two shifts after his fuck up were extremely disappointing. Thought he’d come out with a bit more determination to right the wrong. Not so much. Looked sloppy, gave the puck away and seemed lost and slow on the forecheck.
