Torture Is Sweet: Hawks 3 - Scum 2 (OT)

God, we have to do this two more times next week?

I'm sure I wasn't the only one who was getting dizzy and feeling his or her stomach do A Chorus Line within them tonight. Even in a game where the Hawks probably edged the play at even-strength, there are just too many weapons on the other side whenever they do get a chance. Every time Zetterberg wins a board battle in the offensive zone my balls go house-hunting somewhere around my esophagus. Johan Franzen causes my skull to try and escape the skin around it so it doesn't have to put up with it. But in the end, that's what makes the win feel even better, right? I still feel like I lost most of my 50's during that game, though.

But two points we said the Hawks have are in the bag, and they deserve it. While they had a bad bounce tie the game on them in the 3rd (after a pretty moronic decision by Hammer. No good is going to come of trying to bat a puck that high off the ice), they didn't revert to a shell, they didn't cover their faces and ask mommy to tell them when it was over. They kept coming at the Wings, and only limited them to a couple goalmouth scrambles, whereas the Hawks piled up the prime chances at the other end.

Problem is, they've got to do it all over again tomorrow.

Other Thoughts:

-Was checking out the CORSI and Line Shifts. They tell an intriguing tale. I won't sit here and say that Hossa wasn't a beast tonight, because he was. But his line get pushed around by Valtteri Filppula's according the CORSI. Not much to do with Hoss though, one would have to figure.

-Speaking of which, do you recall some commenters, about the time Hossa came back from injury and they were accusing him of cashing his chips in and not caring after finally getting his Cup? Ok....

-Patrick Kane's play at the end of regulation to earn the penalty that won the game was grown ass man stuff. That's Henrik Zetterberg he outfought on the boards, as well as a couple other WIngs. When he wants to he can be impossible to knock off the puck. That's the Kane the Hawks need from here on out.

-Also, Stalberg was impressive tonight in a return to the 4th line. But there are so few fourth lines around that can handle his speed, and it's even more deadly when he's using his size. McClure called him a "Bum Slayer" tonight, and that's probably true. But that's ok in hockey, because you can keep getting him out there against the other bums. I didn't even think he was bad on the top line the past two games, however...

-...Hey look, Troy Brouwer! Well isn't that something? How ya been Troy? How are the beagles? I have one too, he's nuts. Anyway, Brouwer looked a different player and his stronger positional sense than Stalberg has really opens things up for Daydream Nation. This was a fine move by the coaches.

-I think Pierre McGuire just asked Eddie O another question. "Hey we're gonna catch a cat, right Spike?! RIght Spike?! We're gonna catch a cat Spike!!!!"

-I like Michael Frolik, but his shot selection is bordering on atrocious at times. A lot of Hawks possession breaks down when he flips a backhander or a bad angle shot wide of the net. Tonight, late in the game he had a chance to either slip it to Campoli on the wing and drive the net to make the Wings defense make a decision, or do it later to give Camps a one-timer. Instead, he opted for the shot to the ol' 6-hole, right through the intestines.

-Who didn't see a heroic performance from MacDonald coming?

-On the other end, Crow was just as good. Some real big saves in there, and hardly any of the generous rebounds he's coughed up lately.

-It would be wonderful if Duncan Keith exhibited why he won the Norris more often as he did tonight.

-Mike Modano played tonight. Did you know that?

-The Bertuzzi hit: I've never shrunk from calling this guy a clown, because that's what he is. Yes, he had a nice first part of the year, but he's a clubbed baby seal in his own zone and too likely to take  a dumb penalty. And so it was. Did he mean to elbow Johnson? I have no idea, but he came from Bloomington Hills with his arms raised, it's always asking for trouble. I thought five and a game was perfectly reasonable. Now it's on the NHL. Stringing up Matt Cooke in the town square is easy, because he makes it easy. Do they make an example of Big Bert, even though his recent record is somewhat clean? It's a hit to the head, you say you want it out of the game. Prove it.

-It's been a while since I've been optimistic, so let me try just for a change of pace. Though we've spent the past couple days panicking about this difficult-looking back to back, in recent weeks the Hawks came off a tough shootout win at home against Phoenix and backed that up with one of their better performances of the year in St. Paul. Just last week after a tough OT loss in the Capital they came home and gave the Sharks the MC Ren foot in your ass treatment. So there's precedent. It's also their third game in four nights, and they've scored twice in the previous two. Still gonna be a rough one.

One final note: FUCK AND YES

Nor do I

What, just because he decided to become Miss Manners during the first part of this season he gets a pass on the other felonies he’s committed over his notorious career? F-ck that, I don’t even want to hear about “Hockey Town,” as long as the Goon Par Excellence is employed there. The NHL should make this really easy – if you deliberately go out with intent to injure and wind up ending another player’s career, then you’re done, stick a fork in you.

I’ve always said that Bertuzzi should have been suspended until Steve Moore was able to play. Since Moore’s career was over, Bertuzzi’s should have been too

Should be remainder of the season,

but the fact that RJ wasn’t killed means the wheel o’ justice will land on 2 games (at most). I hope I’m wrong, because the league really needs some consistency here. They sent a forceful message with the Cooke hit, and to back off for Scum-tuzzi would completely undercut that message.

I like this team

When healthy and playing.

The D is among the best
The 4th line (i’ll posit 25/17/82, when healthy) is fast and bum-slayer-y
3rd is proven to be one of the best
2nd is a wrecking ball
1st = DDN

If they play, I’ll take them over anyone else.

The whole season long, its been in their heads, and no where else, that they’ve lost.

He is consistently among the lowest CORSI numbers for the Hawks

but I think a lot of that is a function of him being on the ice for so many defensive zone draws and then jumping off once the Hawks clear the zone.

If Leddy is going to be playing minimal minutes in the NHL, I’d like to send him back to Rockford where he can really develop and really become the player everyone thinks he can be. by Johnny Lava on Mar 29, 2011 1:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Not sure if anyone aside from me will appreciate this...

(more SRS stuff, restated, but more to add. Verstig, feel free to dissect ;)

When looking at past playoff matchups, one thing has always held true. When Team A and Team B meet, and Team A has both a higher SRS AND SOS rating, Team A has never lost that series. (part of the “SOS peculiarity”)

This year is totally fucked up. There is only one possible scenario where a matchup of this type is possible, PHX (.15, .06) over ANA (.02, .05). If DAL gets in instead of ANA, then there are no possible theoretically guaranteed series matchups.

All the teams with strong SRS rating have weaker SOS ratings than the teams with the lower SRS ratings (who happen to be PHX and ANA). And beside VAN who has by far the strongest SRS and weakest SOS ratings, everyone else is cluttered together in SRS rating and have identical SOS ratings.

This is not typical and probably a testament to how much parity exists in the West this year (by comparison there are 10 possible matchups in the East that have a “guaranteed” result). Due to this, if the Hawks (who have the 3rd highest SRS rating in the entire NHL, btw) get Sharp AND Bolland back, there is little reason to believe they don’t have a more than fair chance at repeating. I personally doubt they will, but the path is clearer than we probably believe.

I didn’t see any huge mistakes, but did see some good plays he made. Was he just getting pushed around a lot? It was getting nasty on the ice so maybe Q thought he just couldn’t handle it?

I saw him play really big on at least one play in the first

I don’t recall the Scum puck carrier, but he was coming in on a break to the net, and Leddy did a great job of forcing him to the outside. I specifically noticed that and was happy. I hope he learns from his mistake here on the Lidstrom goal.

he and Hammer were the two D men pinned in their own end for about 1:30 shift during the second when Pisani broke his stick. Take that shift away and his minutes were really limited.

Also, have to give Stan credit for the Campoli pickup. Think of where this team would be on the back end without that pickup.

"will it turn back to cheering for other teams to beat the other teams that are close?"

Actually, that never stops, whether the Hawks win or lose.

Fact is, the Hawks took their time getting their effort level where it needed to be this year, and now they’re having to deal with being in a playoff chase. Fan confidence is fine when the Hawks play the way they can. Problem is, they haven’t been consistent with it this year. So, while we’re not nearly as comfortable fighting for 7th or 8th as we were last year when we were easily sitting in 1st or 2nd, we still expect the Hawks to play well. Because we know they can.

When they don’t, it’s not so much a loss of confidence in them as a frustration that they don’t show the effort.

For a Nucks fan, what’s the confidence in Luongo? The guy’s having a great regular season. But he usually does. How do you feel about him in the playoffs? (A couple of bad games in the first round and I expect y’all will be calling for his head…)

"Dave was there!"

Thats an individual thing

For whatever reason, some just hate on the guy no matter what.

Lui has had the best season of his career, and its still not enough.

Most of us are confident, I don’t expect a “couple bad games”, but have never been that kind of fan before anyhow. No calling for heads from me.

The feeling from most is that if any team can beat this one 4 out of 7, thats a great effing team that should win the Cup.

I was just wondering, because I was over here a little over a week ago talking fans “off the ledge”, when as a Canuck fan, I should be enjoying the shadenfreude!

But I do enjoy watching the Hawks play…just not as much as the Vancouver team.

since then, the Hawks have been very good, but very frustrating. meh record in close games and faltering late breeds a “they can’t close, not clutch” mentality. I tell myself it’s just bad luck but it’s been a very grueling season to be a Hawks fan.

The Hawks are 4th in the league in goal differential (+36). They are 2nd in the league in each of the first two periods (+21, +26) and 23rd in the league int he 3rd period (-11).

Look

Nothing about this season has been easy. We know our guys are good; but various factors have kept them from playing healthy and well together all at the same time. Not to mention the newer supporting players have not always played up to snuff.

All of that aside — I think that if the Hawks get Sharp somewhere around the start of the first series, and IF Bolland can get back on the ice in the next couple of weeks and play by the second one, they could “surprise” a lot of people. My biggest fear with Bolland, other than him not returning is that he is a notorious slow starter (see Oct/Nov/Dec) and we do not have the luxury of time.

Assuming Bolland did not suffer a previous concussion

that was either not reported or detected, it might not. No one knows for sure. All I do know is, Todd Bertuzzi nearly decapitated RJ, offered up “oh damn, my bad,” and got off with no further punishment.

Considering Bolland, Savard, Crosby… et al, this really pisses me off. the NHL could be such a much bigger sport were it not for the nearly criminal negligent mismanagement. The suspension process, the fucked up playoff schedules were we’re all but guaranteed to miss almost the entire first period of every game that starts late, to the stupid archaic CenterIce blackout rules, to the simplest things like marketing.

Easiest path for the Hawks, IMO

Preds vs Nucks, Ducks vs Sharks, Wings vs Yotes and give the Hawks the Kings.

Of course, that means getting up to 4 or 5, and hoping the Kings can hang on.

SRS/SOS to the rescue to add to your fears / my hopes…

VAN has by far the weakest strength of schedule in the West (-0.5, the only team with a neg rating btw). Historically teams with a weak SOS don’t fare well in the playoffs, especially against teams with a strong SOS. For example, last year WSH had the weakest and MTL had the strongest SOS in the East.

This year, VAN has the weakest (-0.5) and ANA the 2nd strongest (0.5) SOS of the likely playoff teams in the West. Could be an interesting matchup? Or if DAL gets in, they’d have the strongest SOS (0.7)

Doesn’t mean it’ll happen, but I’m holding onto to the chance that one of those teams could make it a close series.

I've got my spine, I've got my orange crush.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Mar 29, 2011 12:05 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not as up to speed on some of these metrics as I should be

but does VAN’s weak SOS have anything to do with the fact that they are the top team in the league and don’t face themselves? How does that work?

by Scott13 on Mar 29, 2011 12:09 PM CDT up reply actions

That would be a small part of it

but would only account for 4/76th of their rating. Not enough to even change it.

The by far biggest reason is that they play in a division that is incredibly weak and have loaded up on wins against those weak teams – much like WSH last year.

VAN is obviously very good, but one could say they’re probably about 10 pts better (I’m just throwing that out based on cliff’s post) than they might be in a tougher division, which would bring them back to the pack.

They do also have the highest SRS ranking, which can’t be ignored (SRS = Goal Delta + SOS). The “weak SOS effect” is just a peculiarity that I’ve noticed when analyzing the playoff results from the past 10 yrs.

I've got my spine, I've got my orange crush.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Mar 29, 2011 12:37 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree that the NW sucks

And I’ve been saying it all year, but a lot of the other top teams in the west have feasted on them too. Detroit and Phoenix are 14-3-2 vs the NW, LA is 14-2-2. We get 4 more games against them, so that’s 8 extra points…we’d still be in 1st overall.

It does somewhat concern me that the last 4 are against the NW though, but that happened last year too (when they were all out) and we still came out strong against the Kings

Never saw the Hossa penalty

I knew it came after the Bert bash. In that scenario a penalty is inexcusable. It was early in the game where we had a lead which made it more manageable I believe. If it happened when we were down by one, then I’m sure there would have been more wailing and gnashing of teeth.

It was bad more for the situation than the execution

The Hawks had just started their five min PP and were in the o-zone when the Wings won the puck. One of their skaters was carrying it up the boards en route to clearing the zone. Hossa tried to pick his pocket from behind and came down over the top of his stick breaking it and earning a slashing penalty. It looked like the Wings player’s stick broke pretty easy, but that’s generally the rule of thumb for the call. While the game was 4 on 4 the Wings tied up the game. Before the five minutes was up Frolik took a hooking penalty for the icing on the cake.

Hossa more than made up for the mistake though.

I believe you are correct

and I also thought that someone mentioned during the broadcast that the Hawks were on a 3 game winning streak at the Joe with the Hot Boards. With last night’s win that should put the streak at 4.

It’s worth pointing out though that last night each team was missing some key players. However the Hawks were missing Kane and Hossa last time they met at the UC so clearly the Hawks have been finding a way to get it done against the Wings regardless of circumstances.

That reminds me

there was a play in transition last night (probably around 3rd period) where Kane worked his way through a crowded blue line on an entry and all of a sudden slipped through three Wings and found himself in the slot with space as the two defenders had bad gap, but he went for that Kane big windup wrister that was easily deflected in the corner.

You can’t say enough good things about how quick Hossa’s release is in the same situation. In that same situation Hossa generates a scoring chance and I wish he would work with Kane on developing a shot he could get off quickly, because so far in his career that’s something that Kane doesn’t have in his bag of black magic tricks.

That's idiotic

There are many reasons why through the management of the sport, the NHL is barely clinging to its major status. Among those reasons is the nonsensical way it hands out punishments. Presumably, because I don’t see any other way, they base punishment on intent, and to my knowledge, there aren’t any mind readers in Campbell’s office. Either that, or he just can’t be bothered with this today.

If A 5 min major- game misconduct handed out for a boarding/ elbow/ hit to the head doesn’t warrant a suspension, in the midst of them trying to eliminate these types of plays, then nothing does.

by Skags on Mar 29, 2011 9:24 AM CDT up reply actions

supposedly he didn't actually connect with his elbow

I thought it was a hit with the elbow and the fact that RJ17 needed stiches on his ear indicates something connected with his head. If the Hawks win and DAL loses the Hawks will have a 92-86 point advantage with DAL having one game in hand with 7 to play. In those 7 games Dallas would need to earn 7 more points than the Hawks do to beat them out for 8th. In that scenario, the Hawks could go 2-4 in their last 6, and this would requires 5-1-1 in their last 7 to take 8th.
You may have seen the "Tragic Number" on yahoo. But there are also magic numbers for the Hawks, and right now for the Hawks to DAL it is 12, and CGY 7. The way this magic number works is similar to baseball. For every point the Hawks gain the number reduces by that amount AND for every point the other team fails to earn, it also reduces by that amount. As it sits now, ANY combination of Hawks wins AND DAL loses that equal 6, and the Hawks clinch (or 1 point per game for a Hawks OTL/SOL or DAL OTL/SOL), for CGY it is even worse for them since any Combination of 3 Hawks wins or CGY loses and 1 OTL/SOL for either, and CGY cannot catch the Hawks.
If the Hawks win tonight and DAL loses (in regulation), this magic number drops to 8, meaning over the remain 6 games for the Hawks and 7 for DAL, any Combination of Hawks wins or DAL loses that equals 4 and the Hawks clinch a spot.
Tonight is HUGE, though the Hawks can’t clinch, they can make it extremely difficult for DAL to take advantage of a Hawks slump and bump them out of the Playoffs.

the law of probability

is starting to shift in the Hawk’s favor, but I refuse to take too much solace in it. We’ve seen Chicago teams choke in amazing fashion before.

One game at a time. One win at a time. Get it done, Hawks. Don’t worry about the other teams.

Heresy?

Might be a better business plan to miss playoffs or go one and done long term; there’s a reason no team has won more than once in a hell of a long time. So winning every other year is feasible if you’re not going deep every year…

The future is promised to no one

Give SCUM all the credit in the world – they play to win it all every year, no let – up in the organizations’ stance and actions. That attitude and the will to back it up year after year is what makes dynasties, even in this cap – restricted era. SCUM (and the Penguins) will always get good veterans to play at less than their usual wages if they think they can win the ring, and if that wasn’t a motivating factor for those players in the first place, why would you want them? Jerry Krause said many idiotic things during his reign at the Bulls, but one thing was at least partyly true – organizations win championships (as well as players, of course).

Anyone else pay attention to Kruger?

I was trying to keep an eye out for him and thought he played an alright game. Didn’t really do anything too great, but he won a few board battles and hustled. Didn’t seem to make any glaring mistakes either. But this is all based on the dreaded eye test so I was wondering if anyone else has any input.

Also as noted earlier

Was he playing on the PK and the PP?

by GoCubbies34 on Mar 29, 2011 9:52 AM CDT up reply actions

he was on the PK, don't remember on the PP

thought he did pretty well, had a good block on the PK, and a nice takeaway at even strength. didn’t stand out but he worked hard.

I think he played alright

He got some big time minutes in crucial times, which surprised me. If Q is going to sit Leddy who’s been here for freaking months now, and play Kruger late in games or even in special team situations in his 3rd game as a Hawk against the Wings of all teams, then he must be showing them something.

well, we do need centers so that could partially be it?

while the other dmen can pick up leddy’s slack.

I liked his play

on D…he looks solid defensively….he got knocked down a few times, i sorta expected that considering he is 172 pounds…but even being smallish he had some good board play, and it seems like he gives effort both ways….was particularly impressed when he had a great back check in the second period….he is still really young, but so far so good for the young fella….now lets go hawks!!!get another two points tonight, and cmon Yotes!

he's supposed to be high hockey IQ and a good two way player

Bolland

Is one inch taller and is listed as the same weight as Kruger.

They'll have to pry the cup out of our cold, dead hands

by hawkeytalk on Mar 29, 2011 10:57 AM CDT up reply actions

Hockey database has Kruger at 5'11'' & 172 - Bolland at 6'0'' & 176

essentially a wash (within rounding error/scale accuracy and the vagueries of who had what for breakfast)

He’s still a kid. Limit the fuck-ups and let the stars take care of the scoring and winning. The less I notice him, the better.

wrap

Great Wrap Sam. I think you described quite accurately what most of us were feeling.

I even got a great big hug from Taylor when Hossa buried that snap shot – can you say sniper. At the end of the game Tay said, “I just need to hug someone.”
