Atop The Sugar Pile - 3/3
With the games being as jam packed as the standings, this week's White Gold (Texas Tea...sweetener) is happening a little later, but at least we've got some fun stuff to talk about this time.
The Terrifying Lows
- Troy Brouwer - While it might not be fair to single Lowen-Brouw out during the winning streak, the fact of the matter is that it's happened without any offensive contributions from 22, who has been sitting on 17 goals for a bit now, and has gone entirely scoreless since February 16th against Minnesota. It could be a function of playing with Jake Dowell and Michael Frolik on a line where no one's entirely sure what their purpose is, but the reality is that the Hawks are a more dangerous team when Brouwer's a physical presence on the forecheck and going to the net causing traffic. What Brouwer provides to the Hawk forward corps is in short supply, and should the playoffs happen on West Madison, he'll need to pick up his game to where it was in January for the Hawks to succeed and for him to cash in contract-wise.
- Bryan Bickell's Assertiveness - In a similar vein, Bryan Bickell's presence on the second line with Dave Bolland and Marian Hossa has gone largely unnoticed due to his propensity to fire shots from 45 feet out, last night's assist notwithstanding. Bickell's success earlier in the year fooling goalies with his quick-release of a wrist shot because the book wasn't yet out on him. He now seems content with whipping the puck netward whenever he gets a chance on the perimiter, as if he's convinced himself he's Steven Stamkos. But on a line with Marian Hossa and Dave Bolland - two far swifter skaters and deft puck handlers, Bickell needs to play to his 6'4" 225 lb frame and open up space for his linemates. But, this wouldn't be the first time that someone of that stature hasn't played to his size (at least during the regular seson) over the last couple years here.
The Dizzying Highs
- Jonathan Toews, Keeper of The Elves & The Angel Crusher - There aren't really enough plaudits to throw Toews' way for his play since the all star break, which if you were counting at home has yeilded 8 goals, 15 assists (23 points for the math challenged), and the Hawks have gone 9-3-2, vaulting themselves back into the Western Conference playoff chase. If anyone can remember a more prolonged dominant stretch in all aspects of the game by a Hawks player and affecting the outcomes of games the way Toews has, I'm all ears. And while the offensive numbers may come back to earth, we know we can count on his presence along the boards, at the dot, and on the backcheck, and those are all very comforting things to remember.
- Ryan Johnson - You heard me. While Johnson only has 2 points to his name as a Blackhawk, both assists in the comeback win in St. Louis, Johnson's skating ability and proficiency in the faceoff circle (a clownish 11 for 12 last night) has enabled the Hawks to roll four lines, keeping the top 3 scoring lines fresh, but also to get contributions from the 4th line as well. Viktor Stalberg finally seems to have adjusted his game accordingly, and Tomas Kopecky, while overmatched defensively in a top 6 spot, has managed to look like his last-year, mildly-less-spastic self alongside Johnson. And while the Feather may lament that he's not Marty Reasoner, there's not a lot that can be done about that now, and Johnson is doing his job at the moment.
The Creamy Middles
- Corey Crawford - Though he hasn't looked his sharpest at points in the last week or two, mainly last night and against St. Louis last week, Crow has kept the Hawks in games when he's needed to, and has backstopped every win in this streak. His stat line of 2.17 GAA and .921 save percentage are still both top 10 marks, buoyed by his blanking of the Preds. As the season enters the home stretch, Crawford's workload will be more closely monitored both by observers and the coaching staff, so look for Marty Turco to get his share of spot starts against some of the upcoming Eastern Conference opponents in the next week.

let me check my math
If SJ keeps it up tonight…
the Hawks would be 9 points behind the skum with a game in hand and 3 games against still out there.
Just some ‘off night’ vodka fueled thoughts

thinking the same thing on math
Don’t want to jinx anything, but the division is still well within reach folks. 3 head to head remaining w/scum means that anytime we’re within 6 pts, we can control our destiny.
What deal was Reasoner moved in?

Traded for Jeff Taffe not to long after we got him from ATL.
Taffe @ RFD – 22 G; 26 A: 48 Pts (leads team); -1.
With the way Johnson has played this past month
the Feather may start lamenting that Dowell isn’t Marty Reasoner.
Just curious, was the Feather complaining when Reasoner was given away over the summer, or is this a hindsight thing?
Doc, we got Reasoner in the Atlanta deal and then sent him to Florida for Taffe.

I couldn't get the marooned southeastern teams straight in my head.
thank you

That’s right folks. CNS is smarter than the Fifth Feather.

I was waiting for someone to find that
Well done. For what it’s worth, my brain took this summer off from hockey.
Also, I’ll never lament about Jake Dowell over Ryan Johnson. John Scott not withstanding, Johnson might be one of the worst skaters in NHL history.

He can skate fine, it's his decisions on when to hit the deck and leave his skates defensively that leave a lot to be desired.

I've seen quite a few spills in the neutral zone as he's going from inside to outside edge or vice versa.

And now I just realized McClure commended Johnson for his skating ability in his post
That previous comment of mine wasn’t meant as a potshot. I apologize if that’s how it came off.

I find myself getting in trouble for that all the time. Mine wasn’t a potshot either. I just knew cliff would surface for it.
And when the hell does fishing season start??

Last Monday
I had fish and chips for dinner.
hey asshole
taking the bait is a shitty description, in that fish are unaware of the hook beneath the bait.
i see this more like this:
CNS: I, and I alone, saw Marty Reasoner for the valuable cog he would have been to this team. BUT, if I link to the history, everyone will think (correctly) that I desperately need approval.
me: OK, if you’re gonna be such a puss, I’ll connect the dots here.
CNS: Ha. Look what I tricked cliff into doing!
me: whatever.

No worries.
Anyone with a brain would and should take your side anyway, but I meant more that the fact that he can actually move at something greater than the speed equivalent to that of the earth’s tectonic plates instead of trotting Scott out there is what’s helping keep the 4th line on the ice and having a reverberant effect on the ice times for the lines above.

Scott v. Tectonic Plate
would be a hell of a race.
I catch your drift. It would be a contest of earth-shaking magnitutude, but we’re diverging off topic here. /herp derp
I agree with El Duque that Johnson looked awful on his skates during his first month, but I attributed it to his past foot injuries and possibly not being in game shape. Comparatively he’s been looking a ton quicker lately IMO. For a minimum wage 4th liner, I guess I’m not expecting him to be one of the better skaters on a team that skates well.

Off topic?
Scott plays hockey. Hockey is played on tectonic plates.
Johnson
I think Johnson is underrated, always have. He won’t win any skill awards, but he’s a guy who brings loads of intangibles to a locker room when he’s dressing regularly. Faceoffs, grit … that line has been incredible since he’s taken the lead, and I think his play is as much a reason for the streak as the Hoss improvement (but no, not Toews).
I was ecstatic when we signed him to a try-out contract or whatever it was back in December, was even hoping we’d sign him back on July 1 during free agency.

I think
we could all use a Turco win. Knowing he is fully functional may help Crawford with potential nerves come playoff time.

Maybe Sharks instead of Caps, but I see Turco getting at least 4 starts in March.
What were we talking about?
So why not swap Bickell and Brouwer?
Brouwer seems more willing to do the dirty work, and is better defensively. Bicks is very quickly turning into Sharpie lite, without the speed or the sniping ability.
El Scorcho. Rock N Roll!
Q's biggest complaint about Bickell
is the fact Bickell likes to play like he is 5’10" and 108 pounds. Bottom line is he needs goes to the net or go the bench.

beat me to it
hmmm… Brouwer has disappeared, Bickell has fallen in love with “Bickell the skill guy”.
nope- i got nothin.
We like our people!
Interesting analogy with Buff
Good point – however, will Bickell suddenly morph into a net presence come playoff time? Hell of a gamble, the man is plenty big enough to set up shop there if he so desires. I also think Crow’s stats look even better in retrospect, considering the quality of the D that’s been playing in front of him this year. The man continually impresses with his rebound control.
It's clear
Jonathan Toews is still pissed he was is the second row on All-star selection night.
They'll have to pry the cup out of our cold, dead hands
Could you imagine if he got Kessell'd?

Prior super dominant Hawk performances?
" If anyone can remember a more prolonged dominant stretch in all aspects of the game by a Hawks player and affecting the outcomes of games the way Toews has, I’m all ears. "
I only vaguely recall Bobby Hull’s heyday wearing the Indianhead sweater (back in the day when they were, in actuality, essentially sweaters) – but my Dad talked about Hull dominating games in a fashion that may be the last instance of such overwhelming individual performance
Confusion will be my epitaph.
The Cup is ours until someone takes it from us.
It needs more cowbell.
This may sound like heresy
but I don’t recall Bobby being as dominant in all facets as Toews. Hull’s talent was pure offensive skill and a shot that struck fear — actual fear — into opposing net-minders (and frankly, his brother had an even harder shot, which is REALLY SCARY). Of course, the game was a bit different then, with more starkly defined roles for forwards and d-men, so the comparison is really apples/oranges.
An opinion should be the result of thought, not a substitute for it. (Jef Mallett)
Granted - he wasn't as noted for 2 way play (although Mikita was a fairly strong 2 way guy)

They weren't called the GAG line for nothing
and that was when a goal-a-game really mattered.
Stosh came to my mind too.
And all this talk about Toews for MVP I think is a big premature. IF he carries this team into the playoffs, then maybe he should be considered, yes. I"m not going to be critical of Toews by any stetch of the imagination. The guy is all out tough and has been driving this team since the All Star break. But where was he the first half of the season? Stanley Cup hangover? I’ll cut him some slack there. I just think a MVP should be MVP the entire season.
39 years of pain (1971 loss to Habs) vaporized by one OT goal.
I enjoy the chants at the UC though
He’s been playing like a monster and deserves the praise.

Brouwer might not be getting points but
I still think he has been aggressive on the boards and making way in front of the net. Calling him a “terrifying low” is way off the mark. Obviously just my humble opinion.
Agreed,
but part of that is — I think — that we don’t have any lows right now that are actually terrifying, and they had to put someone in there. On a team where everyone is playing pretty damn good, and some (yes, you Tazer) are playing at levels heretofor unimagined, being a “low” is relative.

Bickell
But, this wouldn’t be the first time that someone of that stature hasn’t played to his size (at least during the regular season) over the last couple years here.
Somewhere, Eric Daze’s ears are burning.
