Not Enough - Nucks 2, Hawks 0 - Canucks Lead 1-0

No need to worry about being out of position, the second shot isn't coming.

Everyone got to see what was expected tonight in the first period, which was a team possessed in front of a bloodthirsty home crowd. Two goals in the middle of the opening frame were more than enough for Roberto Luongo and his goalposts to make it stand up for the remainder of the game, and so went the game 1 of the series. Despite skating well for the final 50ish minutes of the game, the Hawks couldn't solve Borat, but tonight certainly wasn't the beatdown that it appeared it would be early on, and for the third year in a row, the Hawks are now down one game to none against the Canucks. To the salient(ish) analysis:

Observations

  • The hew and cry will be regarding Dustin Byfuglien's absence from this year's team as a reason for the Hawks' failures tonight, and while it's a tired point, it's certainly worthy of note. Luongo was rarely was forced to make second stops, and the first stops he made weren't through even the slightest bit of traffic.  This will have to change if the Hawks hope to make a series out of this. Bryan Bickell, Tomas Kopecky, and Troy Brouwer, we're all looking in your direction.
  • Corey Crawford can hardly be blamed for either goal tonight, first on a tremendous redirection, and the second on a breakaway where his defense hung him out to dry.
  • Speaking of that breakaway, Duncan Keith thoroughly dicked the dog twice in the same sequence leading up to Jannik Hansen's goal. Naturally, he took too long with the puck at the blue line and didn't feel Hansen coming on a change, though the shot he was bound to fire would have undoubtedly drawn shin pad anyway. And once he had been pilfered, he merely stood still, motioning for Crawford to head Hansen off by coming well out of his net. At the very least he could have busted his ass back and forced Hansen to one side, perhaps into the broken stick that lie motionless in the slot right in Hansen's path, for example, or even squeezed him in between himself and Brian Campbell.
  • All that said, after that point, the Hawks did mount a pretty consistent attack. Luongo did make more than a few key saves, the most spectacular of which was on Campbell in the waning minutes of the first, but was bailed out by goalposts on at least three occasions.
  • To that point, who remembers the names "Kesler" or "Sedin" being called for the final 50 minutes of the game?
  • The power play is fucking clown shoes.
  • Whether he's healthy or not, Patrick Sharp was certainly the most noticeable forward from my vantage point.
  • The one fear resulting from this game is that for as much as the Hawks took it to the Canucks for the latter 2 periods, they came up bagels, and that might result in the team squeezing their collective sticks a little tighter should a bounce not fall their way. It's a far cry from the outcome we all anticipated of the Hawks being in the Canucks' heads. But for a team that struggled to score down the stretch, if the bounces continue to head in this direction, it could end up being a short series. The hope is that they get more traffic to the net and more second chances.
  • Get well soon three-six.

What kinda name is “Fucking Post” anyway? Korean? Didn’t know the Koreans were such good goal tenders.

Watching the Hawks hit the post was frustrating

but the Nucks hit several as well. A few inches their way and it was a certified blowout. Sure the Hawks just missed making things interesting but I wouldn’t spend too much time on this.

Yeah, but going back to stacie's intial point

From Kane’s stick to Lu’s Ass to the Cross Bar and then squibbling across the crease and out of harms way.

More or less sums up the way the bounces went tonight.

Yeah

Let’s ignore that fact that the Canucks totally dominated the first period, made sure not to make any dumb mistakes/allow the Hawks any day light in the third and hit two posts of their own. Sheesh, even Hawk Harrelson would be embarrassed by the homerism here.

You might have edged us inthe post category by one, possibly 2. But when you talk about a couple of elite goalies a post is pretty much the same as a miss most of the time. Still doesn’t even count as a shot on goal.

Win it for Manny!
Nucks Misconduct's chief slab of man meat.

by kesrows on Apr 14, 2011 1:29 AM CDT up reply actions

a post is a miss no matter what. "elite" means nothing.

shots that hit iron repeatedly throughout a contest just go to show that a game is much closer than the points on the board. that is why i don’t take much stock in what happened tonight. those iron shots mean more than you think.

Turco was good, but Crawford has a force field...

by Coz_Bulls_Fan on Apr 14, 2011 1:39 AM CDT up reply actions

I played goal at a decent enough level to know that if you had the angle on a shot and it hits middle or outside of post it wasn’t likely to go in. Inside of post….maybe a different story. It truly is a game of inches.

At any rate, if you don’t buy what I’m saying, posts were pretty equal tonight.

Win it for Manny!
Nucks Misconduct's chief slab of man meat.

by kesrows on Apr 14, 2011 1:53 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree. When I’m well-positioned what I always tell myself (or the shooter if he mouths off) after he hits the post is that he’s the lucky one, for missing by an inch instead of the usual mile.

by flyersfaninchicago on Apr 14, 2011 6:23 AM CDT up reply actions

haha, but you know YOU were the lucky one- the posts are your best friend.

I’ve hit 4 in a game before finally potting one- every time I made the iron sing it hit inside and went back out or down into the goalie’s pads. The odds of that happening are insane, I let that puck go just a little bit differently or earlier and I have 5 goals in that game (but who knows, if I have even 3 maybe I don’t shoot those or maybe the D tightens up on me so we’re really talking about “what ifs” and going in circles). As a shooter, you know you have him on that shot from that spot. As a defender, you know you can’t let that happen again and it makes your balls jump into your throat.

I guess my point is if the goalie is in position it’s a save, not a post.

by dangles we can believe in on Apr 14, 2011 9:08 AM CDT up reply actions

Well not really

If the goalie is in position he doesn’t need to make a save if it’s going to hit the post. I know what you’re saying from a shooters pov but it doesn’t make it accurate.

by Canuckelhead on Apr 14, 2011 9:13 AM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Puck hits post goalie was in position

But he was beaten by the shooter.
You think Samuelsson horse face didn’t beat Crawford? Come on.

What were we talking about?

by laaarmer on Apr 14, 2011 9:16 AM CDT up reply actions

So you're saying...

…that as a goalie if you think a shooter is going to hit the post you just let that one go?

Do you realize you are talking about not even an inch or sometimes centimeter of a difference and regardless the goalie has been beaten?

I don’t buy what you’re selling, when a goalie hears that iron ring his face goes white.

by dangles we can believe in on Apr 14, 2011 9:16 AM CDT up reply actions

Ditto for BadgerDano

Goalies make “saves” on pucks going a foot wide or high if they can. A puck hitting the post means the goalie was beaten and the shooter was off by an inch of less in scoring a goal.

"Change the channel, Mike Milbury is making my IQ drop"

by whiskeyboy on Apr 14, 2011 9:19 AM CDT up reply actions

Exactly.

Guy says he lets shots that he thinks are hitting the post go- if that one goes in off the inside of the iron and he doesn’t even have his glove or blocker up to make a save he looks like an asshole, either way that shooter is picking his spots and will do it again.

by dangles we can believe in on Apr 14, 2011 9:23 AM CDT up reply actions

It’s somewhere in the middle. I can’t imagine a goalie being sure enough of his positioning to let a shot go expecting it to either hit the post or miss the net by a little.

Every shot that hits the post beats you, either because your reaction was too slow or you were out of position.

But it’s also true that if your positioning is very good, you can get beat by a shot (in reflex time) but still have done your job because if that shot was on net it would have hit you even if you didn’t move at all. Not every time, and given a stationary target the sniper eventually wins.

When I hear the shot hit the post I turn white inside and smile outside.

by flyersfaninchicago on Apr 14, 2011 11:19 AM CDT up reply actions   1 recs

I have yet to meet a goalie that lets a shot by that he thinks will hit the post

he might say that later (after it happens) but he is bullshitting you.

Who ever said anything about letting a shot go by?

Of course they don’t let the shot go by. But pucks get by them and go over or beside the net too and we don’t bother talking about them because there’s no way to know what would have happened if it was on target and I like to give the goalie the benefit of the doubt. Even if its more exciting, missing by a little bit is still missing.

He isn't there.

Luongo has been the guy (or one of the guys) for years, even with the playoff exits and meltdowns. Even with a Calder Trophy, Crow isn’t in the same league- yes he can get in shooters heads but only after he’s been tested a few times, whereas the guys in that “elite” category are already in shooters heads before the puck even drops.

Crow has a ways to go before you can mention him in the same breath.

They thoroughly outplayed the Nucks in the second period, and I think did better overall in the third. No team should expect to lose if they only give up two goals in the first ten minutes. by Coz_Bulls_Fan on Apr 14, 2011 1:31 AM CDT up reply actions

Except our domination

was followed up by the Canucks managing the last two periods. If the Hawks had scored another it would have been a different game.

by Canuckelhead on Apr 14, 2011 2:04 AM CDT up reply actions

That was my take as well. Last 40 minutes were determined by the first 20, with the avoidance of humiliation the only solace to be taken from it. And if posts were 3-4 you can’t point to them even if you want to claim luck was against you.

My question about McClure’s first point, directed to those who’ve watched Bickell and Brouwer all year (and more) – is it reasonable to think they can actually meet this need? I noticed that there were times the Hawks had someone in front of the net, and there were times when they were moving the puck around the offensive zone reasonably well, but almost never both at the same time. Maybe that’s why the power play is so bad.

I’m not saying Vancouver is as good as this, and it is only one game, but I remember whenever the Flyers would play the really great Red Wings teams that Detroit would make very obvious all of the weaknesses that had been nagging at me. Watching the Hawks for 15 games or so this season I had that feeling tonight, even in the last 40 minutes.

But hopefully Friday overturns all that.

by flyersfaninchicago on Apr 14, 2011 6:16 AM CDT up reply actions

But they don't have the same offense as last year

Which makes VAN’s strategy more logical than in the past two years. The Hawks have had mucho trouble getting any production out of their 2nd, 3rd and forget about the 4th lines.

by Waylon on Apr 14, 2011 8:47 AM CDT up reply actions

Third period approach looked like the coach’s choice rather than player tentativeness but I don’t know the team. I thought they should have resumed pounding the Chicago D even if it meant giving them more scoring chances. But perhaps he’s actually more confident, not less, and pacing them for 16 wins.

by flyersfaninchicago on Apr 14, 2011 6:06 AM CDT up reply actions

It was physical

and the refs mostly let it play out that way, except for that ridiculous dive resulting in a Seabs penalty. One of the softest whistle I’ve seen in the playoffs and completely unwarranted. If you’re gonna let ‘em play (and I’m fine with that), let ’em all go.

Frolik

had a nice game.

I’ll see that first period in my nightmares, and I know that by the 3rd the Nucks were just protecting the lead, but I was encouraged by the 2nd period. I also take a twisted satisfaction that the Hawks got physically pummeled throughout. Strangely I’m less pessimistic about this series now than I was a few days ago. Can’t exactly explain why.

Congrats to Luongo, I thought he played very well.

Their D isn’t that much better than last year honestly. It comes down to their offense being much better and forcing our guys to play D, thus limiting their scoring chances.

What’s bad is, when we had a chance to check, we either passed it up or made a half-assed attempt that felt like a love-tap. If you’re going to hit, hit and make it known. That’s not to say you should get out of position, but if you have a nice, clean check, for the love of God, take it!

Couple thoughts

- Have you guys heard anything about Kopecky? I saw the play where it’s thought he was injured… and I just can’t see an injury there. Was he playing with some kind of nagging injury that might have been aggravated?

- Canucks had one hell of a lot of hits this game, if the totals I saw can be believed. Pleasant surprise that they were that physical, but I honestly don’t think they’ll keep it up. I expect the hitting to subside somewhat from here on… though it’d be nice if it didn’t.

- Holy crap there was a lot of iron smacked, by both sides.

- Luongo may have been a good part of the win and the Sedins / Burrows may have been pretty quiet, but I thought the depth guys really stepped up and proved their worth – Higgins, Hansen, Oreskovich, Glass, etc

- I’m really surprised by how few penalties were handed out. Don’t think there were many more that needed to be called, both teams were pretty disciplined. Not many nasty moments on either side (didn’t like Kane’s slash on Hamhuis at the end of the 3rd, though).

I still can't believe they got Brouwer for goalie interference

When in the first, one of the twins was literally laying on top of Craw. Not that I was looking for a penalty on that, but when they let that go, I figured they were going to let that stuff go all game. Not calling it in the first and then calling it in the third is shitty

My third period thread comment after the game

Actually, I’m not blaming anybody for any of the goals (RE KEITH)

Just one player for constantly giving the puck to VAN. He is a good D man, but his inability right now to do much with the puck but stretch passes, whether there or not, is hard to watch. It really is just a long turnover or chance for the other team to regroup/change/have puck possession. He’s better than that. I know it and so does he.

Keith should be one of our our best players, but Seabrook, Keith, Campoli, and even Leddy look smarter with the puck right now. I would say that his puck possession game is at an all time low. His D is still pretty awesome.

With Seabrook, Campbell, Hammer, Campoli, Leddy, Hossa, Toews, etc., they stayed in a game they probably should not have been. Allowed only two goals to the juggernaut. It could have been worse after the 1st, but they had the advantage for a lot of the 2nd and 3rd, not to say VAN didn’t get there chances too, but all those posts and scrambling saves make me think VAN will be worried.

Kaner! I want more shots. Boink one of Luongo’s ugly helmet for me dude. I’m buying!

Grasping for straws

i think it’s a commona hockey lament that we weren’t physical enough, whenever we lose. Judd sirott pointed out on one of his post game shows this season, that last year callers we’re constantly calling in complaining about that.

We may not have had the number of hits the Canucks had last night, but i wouldn’t say we played passively. It seemed, and I’m probably wrong, a few of the Canuck assassin’s could have been called for boarding. They were head hunting at center ice a lot also.

I’ll take a player like Ben Smith every day of the week, and twice on Sunday, in the playoffs. Although, I think one of the Hawks needs to have word with tanner Glass – didn’t like the way he hung a leg on RJ – is hanging a leg like that a penalty?

if we’ve digressed to the point that we think John Scott is the answer – were in a heap of trouble. It was a good effort, good goal tending and a few noticiable bright spots. Frolic had one of his best games as a Hawk – Hossa had 6 shots on goal – even Hjarlmarrson and Leddy looked ok out there. we definitely need to eliminate a few bonehead plays (Vancouvers 2nd goal comes to mind.

One last point – I think it’s time to move Hossa back to the 2nd PP unit – If Brouwers ok I’d like to see 22/67/81. Kudos to Brouwer for coming back so soon – I’m wondering how injured that shoulder still is.

Power play

Toews / Kane/?, (I guess that leaves 25, 82 if healthy or 29 – their job with our first unit is pretty clear – get your butt in front of the net.) I just think we need more balance. In my mind you need a puck control player on the second unit. It’s hard to take the puck away from Hossa and if you do try he’s good at reading the whole ice.

bah

the game didn’t go as bad as i anticipated. i really felt like that opening period, they had the jitters and couldn’t compose themselves (i blame the inexperience of 1/2 the team). passing was abominable, and for some reason nobody could stay on their skates long enough to ever enter the van zone.

after our bad 1st, things stared to even out. we just didn’t get the bounces in our favor (im talking about several of those prime scoring chances that rung off posts, or open net with a shot into someones skate). thats just karma we are building up for game 2.

that said, we better not have a crappy first period friday and build off the momentum. gotta get one past lou and give the new hawk guys some confidence. btw, why does watching bickell play make me want to grind my teeth into dust?

random thoughts

1. We’ve been wringing our hands about the Hawks lack of physical play for three years. Brouwer (0 hits) isn’t 100% and said so after the game. I recall the beating the Hakws took in Calgary some weeks ago, and it seems to me this is the template.

2. First period was super fast playoff hockey. Yeah, the Nucks had a nice edge, but man it was fast. I thought some of the young guys (Frolik, Leddy, and particularly Smith) struggled with the pace early on, but then they settled down.

3. Lu played great.

4. I thought Toews was a monster again., but not nearly enough “I AM MARIAN HOSSA AND YOU’RE NOT”.

5. I wanted to punch the 17,000 fans at Rogers in the collective dick. Then I thought: This has been a long-time coming for them. The last playoff game they won against the Hawks in their building was game 1 two years ago. That’s right, 5 straight kicks to the crotch, including Buff and Toews hat tricks etc. So yeah, this is what it must have felt like to be a Vancouver fan the past two years.

6. I think Soup and Dunc share equally in goal #2.

7. Barry Rozner scaling new heights of douchitude this morning.

8. Help us, Bollie Rat Kebollie.

by cliffkoroll on Apr 14, 2011 8:38 AM CDT reply actions

Just read Rozner's column

Why? I’m a masochist clearly.

In one part of the article he claims that “The Hawks — 15th in hits during the regular season — might need to think about dressing John Scott.” and called the game " nothing short of embarrassing."

However, in the same column!!! he says " the Hawks were the better team the final two periods, which bodes well for the rest of the series"

So let me get this straight. The Hawks playing the #1 seed, President trophy team who lead or nearly lead in every major category this year controlled the game for 2 periods YET clearly John Scott is the solution.

Barry Rozner, you suck.

Plus, the fact that we gave up nothing after that inital onslaught is encouraging, especially since the Hawks did not play a particularly good game.

I wish I could rec this

All VERY good points.

I think last year some teams tried to take us off our game with physical play too. The difference is we were able to make them pay with it. For whatever reason we don’t have the depth/energy/ability to do so this year.

We also were able to turn it up a notch when needed. I hate to say it but losing Buff and Ladd and gaining Bickell means we’ve probably lost that extra notch on our scale.

I thought the same thing – not a good time to play hot potato with the puck – still Keith has got to be more aware. I’ve always been a big Keith supporter – but he looked tenative out there last night. Not his best game – but when yopu play almost half the game night in ann night out, i guees your going to see a few more mistakes.

One last thing – our imaginary lack of physicality seems to be on the Blue line. Vancouver’s d-men are much more physical – our fowards finished quite a few checks last night.

by wardrums on Apr 14, 2011 8:50 AM CDT reply actions

Hitting?

That’s what they need? This kind of shit is what makes people ME lose it.

What they need are goals. G O A L S

Go ahead and hit them. Finish your checks. Out hit 2-1. Add up all the hits, and then add up all the goals. Do hits lead to goals? Yes, sometimes. However, when you think and try to hit hit hit, those goals will go against you often as you will get out of position – a la St Louis.

Need 40+ shots Friday. Shots from everywhere. Hard and low and pick the rebounds. 32 was not enough. More shots and more bumps of Luongo (Like Hossa).

by Waylon on Apr 14, 2011 8:59 AM CDT up reply actions

Those two were held in check.

What got them there goals was overcommitment by their opponent and puck movement.

This was a close game. Closer than those far away canadians wanted and they know it. I would hope we build off this fact. Play the same game, move the puck smart and possess the puck.

I’m not gonna go all Edzo-meatball on you and say that we need to shove a few guys into luongo to send a message.

One point I forgot to mention last night

If it’s anyone other than Sharp with Kane on the 2-on-1 in the first, or the 3-on-2 in the second, is there any way in hell he tries to force to those passes to him?

I think not.

this is more observation than excuse

but it appears to me that Kane makes much more sound decisions when coming up the right side rather than the left, 2 on 1s included. But I agree, that he probably doesn’t force that unless Sharp is the guy skating up with him.

No reason to force that pass, even to Sharp

Take the f’ing shot especially when you’re down 2-0.

Particularly since it's Sharp, take the shot

because he’s the most likely to pop in the rebound if there is one.

The Toews line

Pretty much murdered the Sedins last night. I don’t think Henrik won a faceoff at all against that line.

AV wasn’t playing them nearly as much (16 and 17 minutes each, pretty far off what they normally play), but that was more because Kesler was taking the Toews line at the end. To me they didn’t look particularly interested in the game. Grumble.

"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"

He won at least 3

Because Hank was 0-3 against him

A few thoughts

1. I’m already sick of the “Who is going to be this year’s Buff” talk. We don’t have Buff, we don’t have anyone even remotely close to him. So why would we want to take away someone else’s skill set to try to make them do something they can’t? They have speed, drive hard to the net and if you get some contact there with Lu, then great, but you aren’t going to be able to plop Kop or T-Brow in front and expect the same results you got with Buff.
2. The Hawks aren’t going to start hitting. That isn’t their game and really they don’t have many players who can put on a hit. Brouwer, Bickell and Biscuit would be the only 3 I think who could play a physical game and not be out of their element. I do think they need to play more physical on the Sedins.
3. Yeah, it sucks that we don’t have Ladd, Madden, Buff, Sopel and all those guys but stop trying to say who is giong to be this years Sopel, or Buff, or Ladd. Those guys are gone and the guys we have now aren’t the same players and we can’t expect the same type of play.
4. This is a speed team and got their chances last night on counter rushes into the Van zone. This needs to continue minus letting 2 in early.
