Gallows Pole - Canucks 3, Hawks 2, Canucks Lead Series 3-0

Hangman, hangman, wait a little while.

It should be telling that for controlling the majority of the play this evening, the Hawks still couldn't top the Canucks, or even muster much at even strength. The names were heard from with goals from Keith and Sharp, and Jonathan Toews had two assists, but again the Hawks were exposed for what they have been for the entirety of the season, which is a middling, mediocre team. This wasn't about want. Names and bums alike, the drive and will was there. But skill prevailed. Fifty four seconds in the middle fram was all it took to get the Hawks chasing again, and the Canucks gave next to nothing 5 on 5. Now the Hawks find themselves at the gallows, noose around the neck and bag over their head, with the lever about to be pulled.

Observations

  • For all the forced plaudits Konroyd et al subjected the viewing masses to regarding John Scott's 4 hits in the first, all it took was a dumb fuck penalty behind the play which of course resulted in a red light behind Crawford to end his night. His 5:20 of ice time was augmented by the ill-conceived idea of putting him on the power play. "John Scott on a power play" is in the team photo in the most offensive phrases a Hawks fan could ever hear, along with "Captain Alex Zhamnov" and "Alexander Karpotsev". Never. Again.
  • The Canucks won the "Sedins held off the scoresheet" game, and the "March to the Box" game. That should tell you all you need to know about how this is going to end.
  • Speaking of those power plays, for having two goals, the advantage once again reeked of disorganization and poor choices. Even though Luongo made two consecutive huge saves on Toews and Kane during the 2-man advantage, the Hawks still refuse pull their heads out of their ass on the 5-on-3. The point men have to at least walk the puck to the middle of the ice. Standing stationary makes the sticks in the lanes all that much more useful. If the point men ever walked the puck to the middle and/or criss-crossed to get a one-timer, I'm pretty sure my anus would prolapse. And again, the ultimate irony is how much the coaching staff stresses their importance.
  • Duncan Keith needs to be re/de-programmed in the off season. His goal notwithstanding, his insistence on forcing things, be it a shot into shinguards, or a pass that isn't there, his decision making has been wretched for the last 7 months. It's no better exemplified than when he's lugging the mail from the Hawks' end on the power play, every defenseman running a power play learns from the age of about 10 on that you don't make a pass until you're pressured. Without fail, by the time he reaches his own blue line, that puck will be forced into traffic.
  • Corey Crawford saw the Erhoff goal the whole way, and has to make that save.
  • On the Torres hit: he probably should have gotten 5 and a game, but I'm sure he's going to sit down for a pecker slapping from Toronto tonight or tomorrow. Unfortunately, he's not one of the guys that truly matter for the Canucks.
  • Ryan Kesler's performance tonight makes me long for Dave Bolland of last year. It's a shame Bolland probably won't get a chance to recreate it, and it's a coinflip at this point whether or not Bolland himself can even remember last year.
  • While Nick Leddy got pantsed on the second goal getting crossed up on the outside by Edler, Viktor Stalberg has to stay with Daniel Sedin as he was breaking down to the far post, as Keith was actually doing his job staying at home in front of the net.
  • Some cartoonish ice times for everyone: Kane - 26:15, Toews - 23:55, Ben fucking Smith - 20:29. No offense to Smith, but if the team is leaning on him this hard at this stage of the season, then the Hawks are in the exact position they should be in.
  • Only Mason Raymond was even at an even 50% (4 of 8), with everyone else taking it hard at the dot, and yet still the Hawks couldn't manage the puck well enough to muster a goal at even strength.
  • Even with the Flyers' miraculous comeback last season against the Bruins, history is not on the Hawks' side, and they should know it. All they can do on Wednesday is come out and skate their asses off and hope for the best. But do not trust to hope.

Oh well

I love this team and will never stop. Tough year.

This is over. You can go ahead and order the autopsy now.

I agree, but we need to edit that

I love this franchise and always will, but I hate this team.

Is it okay

for me to love 2009-10 Duncan Keith and absolutely abhor 2010-11 Duncan Keith? (actually that is a little extreme, the guy ate so many minutes this year so I’d cut him a lot of slack)

by VerStig on Apr 17, 2011 11:10 PM CDT up reply actions

With Duncs, it's a matter of minutes - if he goes over a certain amount, his decisions are affected.

Can we roll 6 D men next year?

It looked like San Jose only had 2, and they’re doing OK… (meaning better than I thought)

If we don’t get more centers, Towes will die trying – we’re a helicopter team – one center, and a bunch of wings (or something like that)

Regarding cap space – how the fuck did Vancouver stack so much depth around a 10 mildo goalie? (Stan, are you taking notes? – Dale is)

Thank god for Rum – let’s go win one!

hey will lose alot of depth this off season.

Bieks 3.7, Salo 3.5, Ehrhoff 3.1, Alberts 1.0, Higgins 1.6, Torres (Douchebag) 1.0, Glass 625,00, Tambellini 500,000 are all UFA

With Lapierre 900,000, Hansen 825,000, & Sweat 650,00

They will have about 16 mil to spend but they are gonna have to give out a lot of raies and not everyone is coming back. It may not be as bad as the Hawks situation, but it will hurt when they have to bring newbies in to fill holes like we did.

by Tuke on Apr 17, 2011 11:28 PM CDT up reply actions

Not necessarily

The UFA targets will probably be Bieksa (who was supposed to be trade bait last offseason) and Ehrhoff. Salo certainly won’t be getting a raise, considering his age and rather checkered injury history. However, the Canucks have some very good defensive prospects on their farm team (Tanev probably leading the pack). There was a point during the season where the Canucks D was Ehrhoff + 5AHLers, so they could probably afford to lose one guy or two guys on D.

As for the offense, Tambellini hasn’t gotten a point in about 25 games, and he’s been a healthy scratch the whole series so far. Who knows if he gets re-signed. Hansen should definitely get a raise though. Glass probably will as well. Higgins/Lapierre were trade deadline pickups, so that’s that.

Series is probably over

But dammit Hawks, please don’t let them clinch at the UC. Force those bastards to earn the victory in their own rink.

I just don’t know if it will be here. The ‘Hawks need a another centre moving forward and he’s not the answer there and with Smith and Morin coming up, there really is no spot for him at the price tag of $1.6 million (which he’ll ask for more as he’s an RFA).

Seriously

I feel like I mentioned my love of his play when I got to see him live here in NY… not sure if anyone remembers.

The thing that strikes me the most about him is that he doesn’t look like a rookie out there. Plays with confidence, backchecks hard, and is (mostly) positionally sound. He could’ve had a goal in the 1st when he got a little room in the slot.

He might make some rookie mistakes next year, maybe even lose us a game, but honestly watching him I feel like I’m watching a mature player, a guy who knows how to play hockey. Might not be a superstar but a solid part of our team.

Leddy stays here

The kid has shown he belongs – some rough patches when he was first called up (of course), but he’s played beyond his years. Shows maturity, makes mostly good decisions with the puck, takes defenders out of plays and off the puck, is rarely caught out of position, has shown flashes offensively, has proven his mettle in difficult situtations. Sending him back to Rockford will only retard his growth, IMHO.

That Erhoff goal hasn't really been discussed

Crawford has done great this year and been very good, but I worry that the Hawks do something stupid and sign him to ridiculous contract. He surprised the shit out of me this year, because I never saw anything all that impressive from him in Rockford. Seems like he has been shaky at certain points of the series. Which happens, Niemi wasn’t very good last night either.

I'm not sure that's entirely fair

Turco played most of his games when our defense was still on vacation. He was by no means stellar, but, like Crawford later on, he kept us in a lot of games we had no business contending in.

Granted, I’m a huge Turco apologist, so take that with as many grains of salt as you wish.

Granted our defence wasn’t good, but he wasn’t either and it was clear that the team had lost faith in him to the point where Crawford played 20+ games in a row at the season’s end.

I don't know

I think any team would have ridden their #1 for 20+ games when during each of those 20 games they were a game or two out of missing the playoffs.

That said, much as I like Turco, I have no difficulty admitting that Crawford was the better goalie this season.

by tgo909 on Apr 17, 2011 11:11 PM CDT up reply actions

I like Turco's antics

and he had some great years. This was not one of them. Neither was last year or the year before. I doubt you’ll see him in the NHL next year. The avg goalie has about a .930 even strength SV%. When your SV% is below .900 at EV, you’re not an NHL goalie, no matter how bad your team plays in front of you.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Apr 17, 2011 11:21 PM CDT up reply actions

Fair enough

Can’t much argue with that.

I just like Turco about as much as Hack likes Brouwer. I think if he had a .500 SV% I’d still think he could turn it around.

by tgo909 on Apr 17, 2011 11:28 PM CDT up reply actions

I truly wish it wasn't the case

I had high hopes for what he could add to the breakout with his ability to play the puck. Unfortunately a goalie’s #1 priority is to stop it first. Like Huet, he seems like a great teammate, wish he could’ve gotten a Cup.

I'm wondering if Rozner's column tomorrow...

…will be that the Hawks lost because Scott didn’t play the second-half of the second or the third.

I realize we were shallow to begin with and the injuries have mounted, but you can’t tell me Klinkhammer wouldn’t have killed us more tonight than a guy who grinds a power play to a halt, causes the penalty that leads to the tying goal, and couldn’t skate fast enoguh to actually hit someone (regardless of what the stats say), and does this in only 8 shifts, forcing everyone to skate even more the second half of the game.

Win or lose on Tuesday

this series will help the youngsters and the guys who never really got any playoff ice time with other teams to see what it takes to compete in the post season, and to show the Hawks powers-that-be what is out there and what is needed.

I didn’t watch a hell of a lot of the game, but even when the Hawks were pressuring in the offensive end, I never got the feeling that the ’Nucks were fearful or not in control. It helps that they took our miserly 1-0 lead and bitch-slapped it very quickly in the mid-second period. As much fun it would be to see this team turn into the 2009-2010 Flyers, I feel the Hawks will be on the links by next weekend.

As great the Scum have been for over a decade, even they only repeated once in 14 years. The Hawks will continue to retool and will be even better next year.

You can say that about the Torres penalty again.

How he got away with that elbow is fucking beyond me. He left his feet. He stuck out his elbow. He fucking demolished the defenseless head of Brent Seabrook. He was given a minor penalty. The NHL will attempt to jizz all over my face by saying it takes concussion saftey seriously, but tonight they let a fucking worthless piece of shit coming off a two game suspension and nearly decapitate one of the games great defenseman. The Bieksa elbow to the back of Sharp’s head could have also been called an intent to injure.

The Canucks are not only outscored us, tonight, they began rubbing our face in shit. They ran Seabrook his two shifts after the elbow in the second period until he had to leave the bench. Watching the Hawks lose to a good team is one thing, watching them get absolutely railroaded by cheapshots is another. The Hawks do not play a retaliatory game, the league wants more of that. For that kind of game to work, it requires the league to have competent officiating and for the league to be very very serious about concussion safety which they constantly assure us they are. For teams to feel comfortable easing out the enforcer/dirty SOB style, they need to know the league is going to hold the line. Tonight it did not.

I just think

some people are still judging the validity of the hit based on as recent as halfway this season. I hope that’ll change.

But if we’re gonna call on the implementation of the new rules, why did they let Seabrook on the ice so soon after such a hit?

by eightyseven on Apr 18, 2011 9:21 AM CDT up reply actions

If a head hit is a madatory "miss a few shifts"

than a delayed penalty is going to be blood bath. Hit the other teams best D man/forward in the head during the DP, get him off the ice, etc.

Seabrook got right up, that’s why he was back in there. Should he have been? Don’t know, but Torres is gonna get murdered. I would go for his legs and hard. Like they have done to Kronwall. He wants to mess with others heads and lives after hockey, then he pays for it. Oh! I hope he gets to play Shea Weber.

What were we talking about?

by laaarmer on Apr 18, 2011 9:26 AM CDT up reply actions

That's a ridiculous point

Sid didn’t lay down on the ice after one of his severe concussions, he skated another period, for Chrissakes. The reason why concussions are so insidcious is that often the injured player isn’t aware of how badly his brain is damaged, and oftentimes his body works just fine. The leading expert on concussions in sports is Dr. Robert Cantu (he’s working with the NFL), and you can check out his work on the subject if you need more information.

I agree with 87 though

Seabs probably shouldn’t have been out there. The guy looked glossed over and out of it. He had the same lost look he had after the Wiz hit (where he got right back up too). Tough as nails doesn’t mean not injured.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Apr 18, 2011 9:39 AM CDT up reply actions

But that's not what he's saying (I think)

He’s making the point that he couldn’t have been that badly injured since he kept on playing, and you’ve just reiterated my point that that’s a terrible indicator of the severity of a concussion.

by Waylon on Apr 18, 2011 10:02 AM CDT up reply actions

No no

I didn’t bring up the point to imply that I thought he wasn’t badly injured, for the record.

This wasn’t about want.

I don’t know what team some people are watching but if this team looks bad, it’s because they’re struggling. Nobody’s perfect, and we have guys who are having down years. That’s not going to change overnight. But their “want” is always there, and I’m sure it will be well into next year.

Keep it in the Central I say. I think most of us feel like VAN is the bigger rival now as well, but perhaps I’m in the minority there.

I also think they’re the only team that can stop Vancouver. San Jose will eventually resort to their old losing ways and it doesn’t seem like Boston’s gonna make it out of the east. Philly might be able to beat them but I don’t really trust their goaltending.

by QatarCanuck on Apr 18, 2011 10:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Sand?

Other than Bertuzzi, SCUM doesn’t go out with intent to injure on every freaking play – they really went over the line in this series, and if they meet up with SCUM they’ll find out what happens when you attempt to take liberties with the game’s best players. If they face the Ducks Kesler’s head will be torn clean off in the first period, and Bieksa will have his hip shattered in short order.

by Waylon on Apr 18, 2011 10:25 AM CDT up reply actions

Sand

We have a lot of it where I live and I find that the word is making its way into everyday sentences. Aside from that, you and I both know that NHL is physical and we both have differences with the way it’s enforced by Campbell an co. I think the Torres hit was bad and he probably should have gotten 5 and a game. For the sake of safety and rules he should be given a suspension. However, I don’t believe that the canucks are playing a dirty series, they’re just playing physical, tough, playoff hockey.

by hawks61 on Apr 17, 2011 11:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

I think Q is very reactionary in what he does. If something doesn’t go well, he jumbles the lines and hopes for the best. Thing is, that doesn’t work without depth. Babcock is more composed and realizes that a season is a marathon, not a sprint. A comment was made earlier about our top guys not playing 30 minutes a night from the get-go. I don’t think Babcock would have ran them into the ground the way Q did to start the season.

I'm a Canucks fan...

So I’m biased, but I’ve been surprised by the amount of “Vigneault is a lousy coach” sentiment on this site. Babcock is really top of the class, and Quenneville has outcoached AV in the past, but that’s not really proof that he’s a crap coach.

AV won coach of the year in 2007, and has produced a series of good (though obviously not great) teams. Lastly, he managed to comfortably win the league while his team was in the top-ten of man games lost, and his top six defencemen lined up in exactly one regular season game.

I’m not claiming the guy’s a mastermind, but what are others seeing that indicates he’s a poor coach?

once the Hawks go out, I completely shut off hockey. Besides, SJ has an extremely tortured fanbase, and I think they would deserve it. That would also mean the Nucks and Red Wings won’t win it.

Also, it’ll go a long way in getting new fans in the warmer areas.

Well (I hate playing GM anymore) there are several options.

What about Los Angeles and their lack of a scoring threat? Hossa would be a nice fit. Who would they be willing to give up? Jack Johnson could be one name with Doughty still to be resigned.

If the Sharks go down to the Kings does Wilson look for a defenceman and move one of his centre’s? Pavelski would be a nice fit here but would have to part way with Hjalmarsson.

A plethora of options out there.

And with the inflated market for D men

I’m not convinced he’s easy to replace. I would say the decision point is whether he can revert back to his physical self again. If he can, well, we thinned out in that department this year and we can’t afford to lose more.

by VerStig on Apr 17, 2011 11:47 PM CDT up reply actions

I still believe there's a better than avg possibility Hjammer gets traded

but you’re right, he wouldn’t easily be replaced. If the Hawks are gonna keep:
Keith-Seabs
Campbell-?
Leddy-Campoli

Who’s blocking shots, can play in the Hawks system, and aside from Seabs, providing the physical element here?

The Hawks would have to spend more than league min to get 2 solid 5-6 D-men. I’m not opposed, just saying they would need to move the $2M they potentially save on keeping Campoli over Hjammer and spend that on 2 non-Boyntons/Scotts/Cullimores.

I would just say

You’d have to be careful not to end up right back where you started — trying to fill the role of a physical, stay-at-home defenseman who can play on the PK, and not pay too much. In today’s market I think that’s a tall order.

by VerStig on Apr 18, 2011 12:10 AM CDT up reply actions

I would hope so

He’s done very well so far. I do think Hammer will have a bounce-back year next season, but even then, for a guy that’s as offensively unreliable as him, I do believe he may be overpaid and for a team with so much money tied up in their D, I don’t think we can take his cap hit. Keeping Campoli and Leddy and picking up somebody else to fill up the last spot would work well for us in addressing our depth on offense.

This kind of response sometimes get panned around here, but he shows some fucking toughness in front of our own net. When guys crash our crease he will get in their face and forcibly move them out of the crease area and Ive never seen him penalized for it. This guy can stay. The only other one who does anything similar is Seabrook, who is a fucking beast.

I was saying the same thing throughout the game tonight

He’s only 6’0" and he’s not afraid to jump in and defend his goalie and team-mates. That’s the kind of passion and commitment you want to see from a player. He also fits in with our style. He’s shifty and a pretty good puck-mover which definitely helps our offense.

And of course, like putmeinthemadhouse said, he’s genuinely happy to be here.

I’m just not looking forward to reading the “Hawks should have kept Niemi” articles.

I’m very optimistic for next year. I think this loss will help our guys get refocused and more salary cap room will help us big-time. Definitely looking forward to 2011.

Thoughts

-Q has made a lot of questionable decisions this year, but this John Scott bullshit takes the cake. The entire staff can be called into question, as how a team with this much top-flight talent can’t score on 5-on-3’s is beyond me. A lot has been said about Kieth’s decision-making this year, well apparently the apple doesn’t fall far…

-Comments have been made about the kids, and I agree that next year should be fun if theyre around. This is a great experience for them. And, again with the management issues, where the fuck has Ben Smith been all year? He was up for, what, 5 games and now he just played 20 minutes in a “must win” playoff game? Its not like we were log-jammed with un-sittable (I know its not a word, but go with it) talent this year either.

-Toews was a beast tonight, and that’s a huge understatement. Sharp was pretty good. Kane was in the right places but lacked any finish of any kind. Hossa wasn’t very noticeable but for a few forechecks that didn’t amount to much.

-Anyone notice how the hawks had seemingly way more chances, but had one less goal? Call it “timely scoring” or “clutch”, but Van capitalized on chances. The hawks missed on many of theirs. Tough to beat a team that is better than you “on paper” when you don’t take advantage of opportunities. A 2-0 lead in the first makes this a whole different game.

I’m just glad we’re at the dance, but it still sucks to lose. At least pull one out, please. Just so I don’t have to listen to the words “swept in the first round” for the next year. God knows I’ve had enough of that with the Cubs’ recent playoff performances.

I kind of took it as

“we’re aware of their weaknesses but haven’t been exploiting them”; I’ve read it much more as Toews taking himself and his own team to task, than as a criticism of the Canucks.

by The_FFF on Apr 18, 2011 12:14 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

And Toews is a lot of things. A crybaby is not among them.

They'll have to pry the cup out of our cold, dead hands

by hawkeytalk on Apr 18, 2011 12:16 AM CDT up reply actions

I believe he said "We weren't able to exploit them"

So “weren’t able” is either whining or pointing towards injuries IMO. Because if you “weren’t able” it’s because the other team didn’t allow you to (they’re better or injuries).

by ChicagoNativeSon on Apr 18, 2011 12:30 AM CDT up reply actions

The actual quote
"Everyone wants to look at the stats all year and talk about what [the Canucks] do well and how good of a team they are," Toews said. "That’s whats frustrating. We’re not exposing them for what they really are. I think a lot of people outside this locker room are giving them too much credit. Maybe we are as well. We know that we can be a better team and we just haven’t shown it yet."

From here. I still read it along the lines of “we know what we should be doing but we’re not getting it done”. But we’re talking about off-the-cuff, unprepared remarks read largely in isolation. There’s all sorts of spin you could try to put on it, but, given that Toews doesn’t have a history of whining of finger-pointing, I’d be surprised if he were starting now.

by The_FFF on Apr 18, 2011 12:38 AM CDT up reply actions

I must suck at the telephone game

“We know that we can be a better team and we just haven’t shown it yet.”
Well, now would typically be a good time, no?

I know that Toews isn’t a whiner, and yeah, comments often get blown out of proportion, but if Lu would’ve said this last year or the year before, we’d have been all over him – oh, he did and we were?

I’m sure Toews is 100x more frustrated than us. A healthy Hawks team probably makes this one hell of a series. Signing a 2nd line center instead of three 4th liners (Dowell, RJ, Taffe) would’ve helped too.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Apr 18, 2011 12:50 AM CDT up reply actions

Except that there is precedent for Toews comments

For one, the Hawks went 2-2 against those sad sacks this year, with 1 being a Hawks dick kicking of them in their barn, and another being a game with atrocious calls.

Second, did you forget the Hawks decimating them the past 2 years? I am 100% with Toews.

"What is icing?"

"Well, uh... icing appen when uh the puck come down... bang, you know, before the other guys, nobody there, you know. My arm go comme ça then the game stop then start up."

This is this year

and this is the playoffs, not the reg season.

Bottom line, if we were winning the series and someone from the Nucks said

We know that we can be a better team than them. We just haven’t shown it yet. . . .That’s what’s frustrating, that we can’t show what we’re capable of as a team right now.
without specifying “due to injuries” we’d be laughing at them.

I’m not hating on Toews, just pointing it out.

I just want to know who's really running the show.

If it’s Q making the roster choices for the game, John Scott shows he’s an idiot. But I don’t think Q’s an idiot. I’m guessing Little Bowman has more say than Q. The “Kruger coming here was our plan all season” crap was from Stan. Loading the team to the limit with too many players that restricted movement was from Stan. And signing some of these traffic cones in the first place was Stan.
The offseason (which is not here yet!) does NOT give me hope if Stan is making the decisions. Q said last year that game rosters were decided by committee with him and the Bowmans and a couple others in on the discussion. If that’s still the case, we need a new brain trust. (And just to bait all you haters out there, remember, it was Tallon’s talent that won the Cup.)

This offseason is the biggest thing the new organization has faced

The first time they have faced adversity and defeat. I do not like they way handled criticism this season. It was very pompous and smug like the Bears always are. They need to put out a good team next year to keep the attendance numbers up. The Bulls are the number one show in town now (rightfully so) and people only have so much disposable income.

You can tell Stan wasn't a good hockey mind

As soon as I saw his first interview, I was disappointed. He really doesn’t seem to know much about hockey and only speaks in generalizations, using vague terms. He may be good with the cap and we may see this a few years from now, but honestly, I have a bachelors in finance and I could have probably done more with the cap room Stan had than he did.

by Ban on Apr 17, 2011 11:49 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm sure he learned nothing

as the son of one of the greatest hockey minds in history.

I don’t like what appears to be Stan’s personality (OK, I think he’s a douche), or the fact that he’s one of the “new breed” of GM’s, but I somehow doubt that he doesn’t have a good hockey mind.

Once again it's time to ask all the Stan haters

Just what they would’ve done differently this past off – season. Let’s hear it all, the trades you would have successfully pulled off, and what you would have received in turn. He definitely has some growing pains right now, but I have a hard time believing anyone else could have performed better, given the ridiculous financial constraints he faced and the reality that every other team knew the kind of wall he up against. Talk about being dealt a bad hand, this was a bad hand that all the other players already knew about before the first card was dealt.

by Waylon on Apr 18, 2011 9:04 AM CDT up reply actions

Ladd instead of Bolland is my frst thought

But then no center, so as much as I like Ladd, you have to keep Bolland.

Other than that, Scott. No reason to sign him. No reason at all. He brings nothing of value to the team. Might as well have a rookie play, at least there is some potential future value there.

I like this team. They just need healthy players and a better than average center.

What were we talking about?

by laaarmer on Apr 18, 2011 9:12 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

If you read my comments on the pre – game thread yesterday, I was one of the first to point out that Scott dressing was basically a white flag of surrender, he’s just that bad. Terrible signing, no question about it – but he’s not the main reason why this playoff is not going well, just one of a thousand secondary reasons.

but Seabrook didn't even have the puck

I would think if Torres tried to play the puck and incidentally hit Seabrook it would be one thing. But the puck went past Seabrook – without him touching it – and Torres didn’t even make an attempt to touch it, just went to lay the hit. If this ends up legal then I don’t even know.

Legit question

The Torres hit on Seabrook. I would have called a 5 minute major, but afterwords, I was having a nice internal debate:

In the current climate of the NHL, should that have been a Game Mis, and as Murray suggested, should there be a suspension?

Personally I think that 3-4 years a go that is a legal hit, but I also think that if I’m wearing the zebra suit, I probably call a 5 minute major on it at least. Given that a Game Mis was not thrown, I can’t see a suspension for that

This will be debated a lot in all circles I'm sure

but I have to disagree with the idea that its not a penalty 3 years ago (irrelevant to the discussion as it may be). It was interference, no matter where Torres was targeting. The puck clearly wasn’t there yet, and he made no effort to play the puck in the slightest. Only legal body play there is pinning/tying seabs up.

Anyway, its certainly a penalty now, and given the intent to blow him up, the targeting the head, the clear contact to the head, that has to be 5. Seabs got up quick and played the rest of the game, so the game misconduct is certainly debatable unless the rules don’t give any leeway on that.

For the suspension, there doesn’t have to be any penalty called on the play to give a suspension, we’ve seen it before this year already. So the lack of a Game Misconduct doesn’t really have anything to do with the suspension part I don’t think. I say at least 6 games (given past history)

If the player gets up & continues playing

has no bearing on the penalty. Eberle got right up & continued playing & Torres got 5 and the game

Not true at all

I don’t know the NHL rulebook, but I can tell you for a fact that several other rulebooks (USA Hockey, NFHS, NCAA) say specifically if injury occurs you have automatic penalties/severities. In addition, there is a subjective human side to this. If the guy breaks his neck, are you gonna give the same penalty as someone who just takes the hit and moves on? Maybe, but maybe not.

by ImpersonatingTheEagle on Apr 18, 2011 12:00 AM CDT up reply actions

I get that it's impossible to be 100% accurate in using inference

to decide if it could have caused serious injury… but I’d like some effort at least — otherwise you’re not creating much of a deterrent.

I'd like to agree, and maybe I do agree (I'm not completely sure exactly what you said)

but I’m just trying to give perspective on the “culture” of officiating’s response to that type of play. A major penalty is an absolutely HUGE swing, especially in a playoff game of this magnitude. You better be absolutely sure it was worth a major or your job is gone. If the guy pops back up, its a really tough sell to call it a major. Should you in this particular case? Yeah, probably. Does that mean it happens? No.

by ImpersonatingTheEagle on Apr 18, 2011 12:05 AM CDT up reply actions

The times are a changin'

Yes. It should have been a major.

Part of the frustration probably comes from losing Dave Bolland to a similar hit. The league suspended Kubina for 2 games. Torres, coming off a 4 game suspension should get some sort of lengthy penalty if any sanity were involved in this process. The officials could have ensured this had they tossed him from the game.

The NHL is not serious about headshots and concussions.

Rule 48

Rule 48 – Illegal Check to the Head
48.1 Illegal Check to the Head – A lateral or blind side hit to an opponent where the head is targeted and/or the principal point of contact is not permitted.

48.2 Minor Penalty – There is no provision for a minor penalty for this rule.

48.3 Major Penalty – For a violation of this rule, a major penalty shall be assessed (see 48.4).

48.4 Game Misconduct – An automatic game misconduct penalty shall be assessed whenever a major penalty is assessed under this rule.

48.5 Match Penalty – The Referee, at his discretion, may assess a match penalty if, in his judgment, the player attempted to or deliberately injured his opponent with an illegal check to the head.

48.6 Fines and Suspensions – Any player who incurs a total of two (2) game misconducts under this rule, in either regular League or playoff games, shall be suspended automatically for the next game his team plays. For each subsequent game misconduct penalty the automatic suspension shall be increased by one game.
If deemed appropriate, supplementary discipline can be applied by the Commissioner at his discretion (refer to Rule 28).

The fourth dimension will collapse in upon itself, bitch.

by hairhelmet on Apr 18, 2011 2:13 AM CDT up reply actions

Soorry. I digressed.

Many rules have grey areas within them that allow refs to factor in intent. The relevancy is that RT effectively eliminated practically all other intentions from his action by not maneuvering for any other hockey play. I suspect the 2 minutes was a result of the ref thinking there was some intent to battle for the puck (as he should have since he was in the offensive zone on the boards with position to setup an excellent scoring chance), but the replay shows a completely premeditated and indefensible violation of rule 48. Even if Seabs had touched the puck, it would have been a blindside target of the head.

The fourth dimension will collapse in upon itself, bitch.

the biggest difference i saw between the Eberle hit and Seabrook hit...

when Eberle got hit in less then 10 seconds someone was flying in to fuck the shit out of Torres, when Seabrook got hit i think i saw Campoli come in and hug Torres. What the fuck is this? one of the Top 5 things to do this offseason is find someone who can hit, fight, and actually SKATE!

by joedl42 on Apr 18, 2011 12:13 AM CDT reply actions

So, you wanted no powerplay

with the potential loss of Seabs for the game/series? Because if someone comes in and grabs Torres to fight that’s probably what you get thanks to the instigator and the minor penalty call on Torres. That’s exactly what Vancouver wants in that situation.

Games are won by putting the little black thing inside the big red pipes. Not by breaking your hand on someone’s face.

I don't think that's the argument cheese is trying to make

But a lot of our guys don’t seem to stand up for each-other like they did last year, and that’s just not how it should be. You have to stick up for your team-mates and let the opposition know that dirty hits won’t go unpunished.

by Ban on Apr 18, 2011 12:26 AM CDT up reply actions

Then you take a number

wait till he gets the puck, and light his ass up. If he still doesn’t get it, do it until he does. Its legal, and it sends the message.

Plus, in the “new NHL” the officials are supposed to do the punishing, not the players. That’s why the instigator rule is idiotic.

by ImpersonatingTheEagle on Apr 18, 2011 12:28 AM CDT up reply actions

IMO, Seab's was a target because he is the only physical presence on the team.

Tee him up, and who comes to his defense? We a roster full of 6’0", 175lb players. I hate the old goon game, and hated Scott’s roster spot last night. But the league is moving to 6’3" and 215lb and fast. We have too many small players with no presence.

by NiemiNation on Apr 18, 2011 10:08 AM CDT up reply actions

Actually, it's going the other way, believe it or not

Pre – lockout, players like Kane and St. Louis would have had a much more difficult time to get established, because all of the scratching, grabbing and clawing would have negated their quickness, because their stature was too small to counter it. Look at the trendlines – it was getting so out of hand that Philly had the Legion of Doom goon squad, headed up by (non – goon) Lindros. Post – lockout, the league realized that they needed more speed and quickness, hence the allowance of two – line passes and new rules preventing the slug players and trap systems. When even Lindros had to retire because of one too many hits to the head, that was the end of this kind of game.

by Waylon on Apr 18, 2011 10:21 AM CDT up reply actions

Agree with your insight, but evolution is creating kids that can do both.

It’s amazing to me to see how big and skilled some of these players are now becoming. I know that they don’t grow them everywhere, but I’d love to have a Shea Weber on our blueline.

Am I in the minority in thinking that people are being too hard on both the Blackhawks and Canucks?

People here are calling out the core of this team, when they’ve been through about as much as hockey players can possibly go through, mentally and physically, in a two year span. The drain of the Olympics, then the effort it takes to win the cup, then the battle all this season just to qualify for the playoffs after losing so much of their depth. Can you really blame the team for not having the energy to win some of these games? There are reasons why there aren’t dynasties anymore, and the Blackhawks are experiencing a bunch of them. Why there are a few people here who go as far to say that core pieces should be traded, young players who have proven that they can win it all, players who are possibly still not yet in their physical primes, is beyond me. Let them have a few months of rest and come back with a better supporting cast and a few lessons learned from this season.

And as for the Canucks, I don’t think anyone should be happy whenever their team loses, but if there’s one team Blackhawk fans should be able to say “Okay, let them have their day in the sun”, it’s the Canucks. This isn’t some team that’s dominated you in the recent past, it isn’t some eternal rival. This is a team the Blackhawks have utterly humiliated and destroyed in the last two playoffs. This is a team that has haunted Vancouver fans for years. If anything, the Canucks are the team that will have the fewest bragging rights over the Blackhawks. If they win this series, they’re one for the last three, if they win the cup, Chicago already did that last year.

I’m sorry, but getting mad at the Blackhawks and hating the Canucks in this situation is like getting mad because the most popular guy in school, after beating the crap out of a nerd for two years, showed up one day hung over and the nerd was able to knock him out. Just let the kid in glasses have his day in the sun, and don’t be so hard on the prom king.

by HobbesD on Apr 18, 2011 12:28 AM CDT reply actions

Better analogy:

getting mad at the Blackhawks and hating the Canucks in this situation is like building the best soapbox derby car you could possibly afford using all your money and time, only to have the rich kid buy an engineered soapbox derby car that also has a secret engine that the officials can’t detect and don’t care to investigate why it goes 110 MPH while you can only must 12 MPH. And then the girl you’ve always liked sees you picking your nose and totally stops calling you.

Just like that.

The fourth dimension will collapse in upon itself, bitch.

Yes, yes you are

Hating the Canucks comes easy. If they were beating the ’Hawks with talented play, there would be a lot less hate. But when they resort to channeling Bobby Probert, f ’em.

Yes, the ‘Hawks are tired. Didn’t get any time off this summer, the cap issues forced the team to shuffle around, and they look like they’re rebuilding. Fine, it happens. But retarded decisions on the ice are still retarded decisions. Duncs has been doing that all season. For $5.5mil, I expect him to show something.

It's all fun and games until Crosby cries. Then it's frackin' hilarious.

by JeromerINC on Apr 18, 2011 12:37 AM CDT up reply actions

I agree but

I realize you expect a lot from a 27 year old making 5.5 million, but a lot of guys have a stumble year after a career season. You overthink your game, you get too confident, you try to take too much on yourself.

And are the Canucks winning because they’re “channeling Bob Probert”? They’ve been physical but until Torres threw his suspendable hit tonight, I don’t think they’ve been what you would call dirty, and if anything, the Probertish dirty hit tonight cost their team a goal, it didn’t help them win a game. I’d also add that teams that go far in the playoffs generally have a few players that play on the edge, at the risk of throwing bad hits, case in point: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3Vz3PZw4DY

Now that the shoe is on the other foot, many of you are saying you’d rather see the Wings (or whoever else) win. Why? Why wouldn’t you cheer for a wicked team that has had a remarkable year and for an organization with a GM who made some extremely savvy moves and set positive benchmarks with regard t the treatment of his players? The Torres hit was shit and he will rightfully be suspended. The team is unreal. The city has never had a cup. And yet, you’d cheer for Detroit? Hope the Hawks make a series out of it. I was hoping for the wings and hawks to meet in the playoffs this year. Sadly, it doesn’t look like its in the cars. Those two teams always have the best series’s, even going going back to the early 90’s. Hell, even though the wings won in 09 in 5 games, two or three of them went to overtime. That was a good series. Other than the sedins and kesler the canucks are trash and their coach can’t direct his way out of the streets of chicago let alone direct an NHL team. I despise coaches who bitch about shit after the game (boudreau, therien, this guy). And Torres is an asshole. He needs to be sit down before he kills someone. Same thing with Shane Doan. But because its Doan, its an “emotional, physical play” instead of charging. Anyway, long story boring…..come back on the canucks. The wings want to play you.

Where’d you go? Why have you forsaken us?

I’m not going to go all the way into Cookville, but if he doesn’t start producing, we’ll NEVER win another cup with him on the roster. His salary is just too big for him not to show up on the scorers sheet. Two post-season’s in a row is the start of a trend. Sure last year he did a lot of things that didn’t show up, and yeah he scored a few goals. But for the most part he was kept of the sheet and with a team stacked with talent, that wasn’t a problem. This year, he’s been a disappointment. A major disappointment. In fact, it’s even worse than that.

I think Frolic has made a bigger impact in these games than Hossa has, which is nauseating.

by Skags on Apr 18, 2011 7:53 AM CDT reply actions

Face it none of core superstars produced on the scoresheet.

Young team, lots of turn over, and no team chemistry. Still say 97 pts and playing the best team in hockey tough are get starts for next year.

by ccm on Apr 18, 2011 8:07 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes and no

Part of the issue with him is that he has issues scoring in droves when playing with centers who aren’t legitimate, established top 6 players.

Also he is 2 years removed from 30 so don’t expect another 82 game season or more than PPG stats from him.

He will be around for another 10 years and if they don’t find another competent player or two to play with him he will continue to “underachieve and underwhelm”

Still a very good player but IMO not worth the coin they are paying him for how long they are stuck with him. Though I don’t really think its fair to throw him under the bus at this point.

by TurdFurgeson on Apr 18, 2011 9:07 AM CDT up reply actions

I understand a scoring slump

I do. I’m not throwing him under the bus, and I understand he does other things that don’t show up on the score sheet, but frankly, he’s not doing those things. He’s been completely invisible. That is not acceptable. It’s just not. Kane has a couple points, which sucks, but he’s been all over the ice. Hossa has been a no-show so far.

by Skags on Apr 18, 2011 9:27 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not disagreeing it is just that

watching him the last 2 years with the Hawks and 1 with Scum: it is an unrealistic expectation to think he will take over a game and all by his lonesome win you a big game IMO.

He just isn’t that kind of player. He will get his PPG or close to it during the regular season but unless it is Crosby or Malkin distracting the other team you wont see a big playoff performance from him. Ever.

If anyone is to blame it is front office for setting unrealistic expectations that some of these players can’t live up to.

by TurdFurgeson on Apr 18, 2011 10:34 AM CDT up reply actions

Hmm

Actually, HE IS that of player. I remember game 4 (?) Western Semis… he singlehandedly beat us. And how many times through out the year has took over a game? A bunch. How many times did he dominate play last year’s Cup run? A bunch. He gets into his IMHAYN mode and it’s fuck or walk.

So far, he’s doing nothing. That’s why I said… he better be sick or dead.

by Skags on Apr 18, 2011 11:03 AM CDT up reply actions

Ok so one game the whole 2008-2009

playoff run where Detroit had one of the deepest and best teams in the NHL of which he never had to be the best player on.

Which is my point, you are expecting entirely to much from him. He is actually pursuing the puck well and winning board battles like he usually does. Playing with random, unestablished players does not help.

No where near playing with the likes of Zetterberg or Datsyuk or Crosby or Malkin. He hasn’t had to be the best player on the ice in any type of critical situation ever there was always someone else to carry that load.

So to expect him now to make that type of impact being on the tail end of his prime is an unrealistic expectation and you are setting yourself up for disappointment.

All is just wrong with the universe when you have diehard Hawks fans rooting for Scum. I’ll “officially” cheer for the Sharks because of Pavelski (my kid is in his hockey camp this summer) but if the Hawks are done, I’m hoping for a team from the East to win it. Anyone but the Nucks. And the Scum.

But the Hawks aren’t quite done yet. GO HAWKS!

The Seabrook hit made me sick

From our seats, I saw it coming. Skating behind the net looking back- bad idea.

Of course, Torres absolutely unloaded on him. Very fucking cheap, but if he wasn’t an idiot, he could have delivered a rocking, but clean, hit.

When Seabs came back out, he was wobbly like I’ve never seen him. And they kept running at him- knocked down a couple more times on hits he would ordinarily brush off.

The Canucks came into this series to play physical and target the Hawks skill players- a good strategy against the Hawks. But as the series goes on, they are becoming more and more asshattish- with the charging, the leaving the feet, the elbows.

This surprises me- at this point, an injury would be much worse for the Canucks, but this is how they want to play it, so…

I would use one criterion for Tuesday’s line-up- gimme guys that can skate and hit. I don’t know which IceHogs (if any) fill the bill, but suit ‘em up. Hell, call up that idiot Beach if it’s not too late.

Target the misshapen-skulled twin freaks. Not dirty, but hockey. Go after ’em all game. Give ’em something to remember.

I know this sounds like the panic button, but at this point, the Hawks are quite the longshot, no, and I want my pound of flesh.

Let me just say

I got damn tired of the Troy Murray apology tour with Memelo last night on WGN’s postgame show.

Yes, Troy, they were working hard. Big fucking deal. They weren’t working smart, which has been a huge part of the problem all year.

And for all the meatheads clamoring for Scott, how’d that work out for you? Worked out pretty much exactly how I figured it would, although I will readily admit that Scott is a much better skater/player now than at the start of the season (which of course still isn’t saying much). But the ridiculous part is — once you’ve dressed him — at least use him for the one thing he’s actually good at and send him after Torres or Bieksa.

Queneville might have had his worst game as a coach last night. From the Scott decision(s) to the TO (really? you need a TO to explain to your team how to handle a 5 on 3 in the 85th game of the season? Oh, because they were tired? Fuck you.).

other thoughts

Luongo has kicked Kane’s ass this series- a bit of revenge for the Hattie that left Bob face-down blubbering into the ice a couple years ago.

I thought Hammer played very well last night.

Since his 2006-07 season, Hossa’s trajectory is starting to look like the stock market in 1929. I love the guy, and any comparison to Havlat is totally Monday-morning QBing, but damn, Marty knew how to rise to the moment.

by cliffkoroll on Apr 18, 2011 9:29 AM CDT reply actions

Luongo has played well.

My kids coach is related to the former Wild coach. When he got the job, and they acquired Havlat, Trent Yawney told him Havlat was a coach killer. He sat out their last game injured – upper body – head case. Havlat is interested in Havlat. I like watching Havlat play hockey, but I’m glad he’s not on this team. Hossa will do at least whatever it takes to win. I honestly don’t think Hossa cares who scores or how, so long as they win. This is why the Hossa / Havlat move was good.

all fair points

no way is Havlat in the same league as Hossa as a two-way player.

But damn, remember that Calgary series two years ago? I don’t care if he was doing it outta selfish reasons or not, JHC carried this team through some big games. I’d just like to see Hoss, once, do this in a playoff game. He’s had 25 chances so far.

I’m sorry larmer but this story sounds more like two guys that are upset about losing their jobs and blaming one individual unfairly. Nothing more in my eyes.

Havlat was a far better teammate and clutch performer than what Hossa has ever shown here.

Hossa won the fucking Stanley Cup. Havlat took money.

I did not want to be the name dropper, but it is only once removed from the Wild coaches mouth.
Havlat is a pussy! He kicked a guy with his skate. The players took care of him and now he has a bionic shoulder (twice). Loved watching him play, good player, but he will never win the cup because he is interested in Havlat and doesn’t get it..

BTW – the kids coach is the BROTHER of the Wild coach. I believe it.

by laaarmer on Apr 18, 2011 3:08 PM CDT up reply actions

The Kicking Bird is a bad ass

Who can score in the clutch with out having the benefit of playing with Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Crosby or Malkin.

I am more inclined to believe the coach in Minnesota was clueless and none of their stars played the last game. And all things being equal Hossa is a more complete player with out a doubt.

Similarly, this group of Hawks management clearly wanted to push a brand of puck possession that has made Daytoit dominant for several years. And a player like Hossa with the proper line mates makes sense. Also factoring injury history at that time he was the less risky pick. Then factor in new management wanting to make their mark with a big signing and have “their guy” come in.

It was a business decision thanks for trying to make it a soap opera.

Spot on

They gave you a season last year to remember, and they were pretty awesome the year before, and no one expected them to repeat this season. They did well to even make the playoffs, so let’s appreciate that.

by Waylon on Apr 18, 2011 9:52 AM CDT up reply actions

I'll try to keep that in mind.

It’s a good point, but I have to tell you the frustration is difficult for everyone to bear.

I have boo’d a bit recently — but it’s because they appear to be skating around at times with zero clue, and I don’t care how young you might be, you are a professional and getting paid like one (by folks like me, who buy tickets, licensed merch and tune in for TV/Radio).

I will not boo Tuesday, however, and can’t remember ever doing so, in any sport, on the last game of the season. Because at the end, I’m a fan of my teams, and they always bring me as much pleasure in the sheer sport of it as they do frustration in whatever failings I perceive.

It is kind of frustrating but not if you put it in perspective

If you look at the number of rookies starting (5) the journey men and raw talent that came from shitty organizations it isn’t really surprising they are where they are.

They have kept the games pretty entertaining and haven’t been blown out.

I think they should have changed their style of play a while ago similar to Montreal where they can use their speed to their advantage a little more instead of trying to play puck possession with out the man power to sustain it. Not pretty but could have been more effective.

by TurdFurgeson on Apr 18, 2011 10:49 AM CDT up reply actions

Makes sense with the personnel maybe

but I’m not sure you can win a championship with that style. I’d like to see us upgrade (or refit) the team to bring us back to puck possession land. That’s why we have dat senior hockey advisor, right?

by VerStig on Apr 18, 2011 8:46 PM CDT up reply actions

Fair enough

But for those of us of a certain age, we well remember the many dark years, and the years where excellent teams didn’t have a chance to truly fulfill their potential, because of a hateful owner who only cared about counting his $$ from his liquor distribution business/corrupt Chicago/bribe liquor license (and yes, he well – deserved THAT booing on the ice a few years ago). For that reason alone, I have to be quite hopeful for the near future of this franchise, and am looking forward to watching the development of some excellent prospects (with many more to come, starting with this year’s draft). Let’s face it, if this was even four years ago, you’d be quite optimistic about the future if you saw this team on the ice this season.

by Waylon on Apr 18, 2011 10:31 AM CDT reply actions

Got it

and believe me, I’ve been around long enough last year was not the 1st Cup in my lifetime.

I’m hopeful, too (shit, I keep sending Rocky buckets of money every season, including what appears to be a pretty good deposit already on next year’s season). I just want my players to play hard AND smart. At the same time. And to whatever talent level they possess (meaning I expect a lot more out of 88 and 10 than from 28 and 15).

And I wasn’t booing last night, in any event. A little more from our boys isn’t going to make much diff. Van’s a better team, straight up. We needed to steal one there to have a chance, because if they have a weakness, it’s between their ears (and they may have finally conquered that). Doesn’t mean they’ll win the Cup — that’s a long road. But they will advance, and we won’t. Not being a downer, just stating what should be pretty obvious.

An opinion should be the result of thought, not a substitute for it. (Jef Mallett)

Agree with the point above on the roster.

I am not saying trade everyone… So no “trade everyone sarcastic response needed.” But what is interesting to note watching these two teams this year is that we have a lot of our money spent on smaller, skilled forwards and smaller, skilled d men. We are really missing strong/ big/ fast centers (we have really missed a strong Bolland all season) and have had no response for the combination of Sedin and Kesler as their 1&2. I was really surprised to see Q match Kane and Toews to the Sedins all night last night, but in hindsight there was no other option when he decided to sit R Johnson. And while I like each of our D individually, i don’t think we will like our results if we stick with the current 5 some that is all 5’11"/ 175lbs with average shots from the point. Campbell’s output in the offensive zone was particularly brutal to watch last night on the PP. We really have NO consistent offensive threat from the point. Last summer’s parade out the door was frustrating but we all still had the happy hangover. This summer’s needed makeover is going to be very interesting.
