History Shows Again And Again How Nature Points Up The Folly Of Man: Hawks 5 - Bed-Wetters 0

Remember on the last day of the season when I told you I had written that wrap in my head seven different times? This is the complete opposite. I'm not sure what to say, what to feel, any of it. On the one hand, the Hawks I, and all of us, have begged to see the entire season have come out to play at the very last, couldn't cut it any closer minute. It feels like house money at this point. On the other, there's such a long way to go. But I can't stop those of you who are daring to dream. And I can't stop those who want to point out how much is to be done yet. Which one am I? I have no idea.

But isn't Sunday night going to be an occasion? Before this series, we made it about the Canucks' gray matter. It looked to be totally different the first three games of this series than it had in the two previous years. Now it's positively dripping out their ears. The confident, swaggering unit that was physical but structured, fast but controlled, lethal, and confident, is now none of those things. Instead of taking hits when they were there they ran around to get them and left their neutral zone more exposed than Lady Gaga's lack of talent. And when you expose the neutral zone to the Hawks, you're gonna be proper fucked. Instead of checking legally the Canucks have once again gone the dunderhead route. Edler and Bieksa have completely lost their minds, when they're not eating it from Troy Brouwer (sidenote: I expect the league to fine Edler for his chickenshit elbow on Brouwer, but I would be struck down with shock if he gets suspended. I mean, it was behind the net which we all know is Thunderdome, right?). And their goalie may be broken again, though Vigneault has already said in the postgame presser that he's starting Game 6. And I expect him to play well there too, though I don't know why.

What encourages me the most is that the Hawks swagger, or strut, or bluster, or swank, whatever you want to call it, is back. I don't know if we've seen it all season. But you can see it oozing out of their pores right now. They honestly believe they have the Canucks right where they want them. And that's what also worries me. This team far too often made the mistake of believing that it just had to show up to get the win. Does this new found team without doubt make that mistake again? Or do they keep doing the things they've done to get here? I don't know. Do you?

One suspects the Canucks will return to a very simple game on Sunday, one that the Hawks have used the past two games. It's going to be a chippy, bone-crunching event, and I don't think there'll be a lot of goals. And the Hawks are still just one high-sticking, one bounce off some guy's ass, one missed clearance from planning Campbell's wedding. But now, they're just one game away from having the Canucks in the same position. And I know who's mental makeup I'd wager on if it gets there.

Other Thoughts:

-That's the most active Jonathan Toews has looked all series. I still think he's hurt, and it's not quite the folly of man we've become accustomed to. But he just watched Marian Hossa join the party, the Hawks just have to hope that Captain Marvel doesn't Spinal Tap Drummer implode before Game 6, such will be his determination.

-Ah right, Duncan Keith won a Norris last year. With stuff like that. Sorry, I had forgotten.

-It's funny, because it could have all easily gone the other way. Brian Campbell did his Bieksa impersonation no more than 16 seconds into the game and headed to the box. The Canucks of the first three games would have made him pay. But with a crucial Hammer interception and one save, and there went that chance. Once the Hawks cashed in on theirs, you could feel the air go out of the building. Like, in a hurry. Sounded like a fucking whoopi cushion.

-One of the Hawks problems this year was turning off when giving up a goal, and giving up another one within in a minute. They've turned that around the past two games, and it's decided both. Rinse, lather, repeat.

-Canucks fans have been quick this series to applaud Ryan Kesler's performance, and he's probably my favorite non-Hawk, but I just don't get it this round. He's been lauded for his work on Toews, but from the first three games the Sedins skated against Toews the most. And however that's worked out, this is a 40-goal scorer who isn't even threatening right now. And now that the Sedins have returned to their springtime freshness shell, can the Canucks afford that?

-Alex Burrows continues to be, and will always be, an utter embarrassment.

-And now the supposed quiet leader is losing his rag, as Dan Hamhuis (he's got dis, remember) went in high on Bolland. Sadly, Bolland went a little silly but it didn't end up costing anything.

It's a wrap and an Indian I honestly thought I wouldn't get to write. But I'm much happier to be wrong and have more work to do than the opposite. It's the heat, and the love, let's keep this train a'rollin....

What they keep saying hasn’t changed – they have nothing to lose and are playing for each other and having fun. The pressure remains on the Canucks. And while they may come back on Sunday playing a better and cleaner game, I like to think the Hawks have the drive and the Canucks lack the mental fortitude to make it go their way.

I don't know obviously they want to win and do really well

but they backed into the playoffs and even they probably thought they’d be done in game four. Every game is one they didn’t expect to be playing – and most people didn’t expect them to either. I think to a degree it takes the pressure off. Unlike the Canucks who got the President’s trophy and are trying to finally get past the Hawks – and its proving to be more trouble then they thought.

Whether his two way or defensive play was in doubt or not wasn’t really my question.

On a number of occasions Hossa was defending the way the centerman defends. Sharp was defending as a winger on the d-man. Didn’t know if that was on purpose or just first forward back…

In my mind, and really in reality, this series is tied 3-3. Game 6 is all over but the shouting.

which is still a very difficult thing to do (I’m not about to get overconfident). Game 7 will be a spectacle. Fast, penalty free for the most part and the best hockey we’ll seen all season. And I have no delusions that the Canucks will not be the favored team.

The shocking thing

is how dominant the Hawks have been these two games. I thought maybe we could pull out an overtime victory in game 4 since we’d play them pretty close the first 3 games. But these last 2 have been just ridiculous. (Like, Devin Hester ridiculous!)

It was hilarious at the 2nd period intermission to hear the VS. guy (the one next to Roenick) say that the Nucks embarrassed themselves in the second, and he had no doubt they’d embarrass themselves in the third period. First of all, Luongo is going to start and that’s the bottom line. Secondly, I don’t blame him much for another loss because a) he was hung out to dry by his mates AGAIN and b) he is one of the biggest reasons why the series was 3-0 in the first place.

The “revamped” D has always been, IMO, the weakest part of the Nucks story this year.

Well it's been said before

3 pairs of 2nd pairing D are not the same as a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd pairing. You basically end up with a soft spot if one of your pairings isn’t playing like a 1st pair (which they had been previously).

But honestly, I remember when people were saying Craw should’ve had a couple more saves the first 3 games, and how it’s not necessarily his fault but being the playoffs it would be nice for him to steal a game for us. This is his first playoff series as a starter. But wouldn’t you expect Lu to come through at a time when his D is shitting the bed? Any lesser goalie, perhaps not, but for $10 million?

I am so confused...

All season I’ve been on Scott’s case about, well, the fact that he can’t play hockey. However, the way these Canucks played the first three games the meatball in me wants him to just destroy a couple of them, starting with Torres. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this entire game live on ASN. I am glad the neighbor’s house is not too close as my screams of joy got louder with each crowd silencing goal (although the last couple of goals brought down a nice rain of boos). Unfortunately I have to go back to following the next game via Gamechannel or sneaking a look at my Blackberry during meetings. The stats do not show it but the Hawks thoroughly dominated this game from start to finish. They were more energetic, more disciplined, and played with more skill.

Oh the joy of catching my _____________ (filll in the blank with Hawks, White Sox, Bull, Bears) for breakfast halfway around the world.

I've never seen anything like this before ...

This vancouver team went into the third period two games in a row down by at least 4 goals: 5-1 Wednesday and 5-0 Friday. Both nights they came out in the third period and didn’t even try. Did anybody else feel like they were watching a preseason hockey game in the third last night? Wednesday night? After the first game, I thought the difference was that Canucks had finally gotten some heart. It turned out they were just playing before their 4 hour erections wore off. What a horrible team to have to root for.

I listened to Vancouver talk radio

they were on until 4:30 am here, 2:30 Vancouver time, and man, are they scared shitless!

After listening to caller after caller the general feeling is:

If the canucks lose to the hawks 3 years in a row, you have to fire the coaches, especially after losing a series after being up 3-0.

Maybe this team just isnt structured to preform in the playoffs.

The regular season doesnt mean shit. The canucks played in the weakest division in the NHL and now that’s being exposed, and they’re really worried that if the 8th seed hawks can destroy them like this back to back, Detroit or San Jose will eat them for lunch.

They really think Lu is weak glove side, and has been for several years.

They kept mentioning that the twins and Lu have been in the league for around 10 years and never gotten past the second round. Something is wrong at the core of the organization in Vancouver.

These two losses were without “the hawks shutdown man Seabrook” and John Scott playing 12 minutes. Yeah.

A caller mentioned rioting in the streets, and the host mentioned there will probably be a lot of loss of support after another failed season this year.

They are absolutely livid that Henrik isn’t leading the team, and that is has 4 assists in 5 games, and 1 was in garbage time in game 4. Burrows isnt doing shit, and neither is Kessler. They are also saying Salo is a disappointment.

Pretty interesting. The host offered to “say on the air until the morning guys come on, should we lost game 7”, lol.

I see it differently (maybe slightly biased, admittedly)

but I see intent on Edler’s part. He removes his left hand from his stick and raises it up to Brouwer’s head level and then extends his elbow into the hit. Especially when it wouldn’t have been necessary because Brouwer wouldn’t have done more than graze him.

Since Brouwer was the one “delivering” the hit for the most part, I doubt the league does anything. It can easily be written off as Edler trying to brace for the hit and getting his elbow up a bit.

but I also understand that Campbell will find a reason to avoid a suspension so that he does not have a negative effect on the playoffs. It has to be a lot more obvious than this hit for any suspension to be leveled . . . unfortunately.

Edler slowed down and raised the elbow to make sure he made contact. He knew what he was doing. It was acheap head shot. Will it be suspended? Doubtful.

Very early in game 4

Dunc had the puck on his stick in his own slot. He tried some fancy stickhandling, turned the puck over and almost made it a very different game. He went to the bench and scraped the pooh out of his shorts. After that, he totally simplified his game. That has been the difference.

While I feel bad for Malhotra’s injury, and he seems like a genuinely great guy, he was supposed to be the checking center that evened things up for the Sharks against the Hawks’ depth.

I don’t think having his skills would necessarily mean we’d be in a different position, because yeah – it didn’t work out that great against you guys last year (but let’s be honest – there really wasn’t any team that was going to shut you down at that point).

I, personally, think that he was a big factor in this “changed mentality” everyone kept preaching about this year. I also think he kept Torres in check – because Torres has been a loose cannon ever since Malhotra has been out.

Well there's the issue,

and I’ve said this before.

There’s nobody on Van who has that gene. As good as some of their players are, I’ve yet to see a playoff gear. Nobody who can do what Toews, or Keith, or Kane or Hossa can do when the shit is heading towards the fan; just put the rest of the guys on your back and declare “no fucking way, not on my watch.”

It’s been the same with the Sharks and the Canucks for years. I hadn’t seen Vancouver much this year but had been told they’d solved that problem. We’ll find out in the next game or two.

Sharks seem to have solved it by committee. They’ve acquired or developed a handful of clutch players and guys with huge heart so the pressure is different now for Marleau and Thornton, makes it easier for them to step up when it is needed.

I didn’t think SJ had more than a prayer against the Hawks last year. If they had had this team I think they would have put up a fight. So if they beat the Kings they either play Detroit or the Hawks next. Detroit is playing much better now than they were last year, and without Zetterberg. Can we assume the Sharks are rooting for the Hawks the next two games?

but if so, it reflects poorly on the fragile structure of the President’s Trophy winner.

You could say something similar about the Hawks and Bolland- if ANY one guy (especially Bolland and Malhotra) is that important, the team is not that great.

I love the heart the Pens and Scum are showing in the first round, minus much bigger pieces. Hawks and Nucks- you wanna be a champion? Aspire to this.

But he seems to have been a calming influence for the Vancouver Canucks. In the dressing room, in the faceoff circle, on penalty killing. I think San Jose has been a little too calm in NHL playoffs, but Vancouver could sorely use some of what they have had.

Malholtra is the real deal.

He is a checking line center that plays the other teams top lines and “wins” +/-. He does for the Canucks what Bolland does for the Hawks.

Having him means AV doesn’t need to play Kesler exclusively against Toews. Kesler on Sharp could change the series with more offensive production from the Canucks second line.

Missing Malholtra was one of the big reasons I thought the Hawks had a chance. If Bolland came back healthy and Malholtra was out, it was a whole lot more even between these two teams…

He and Toews both

They are both working their butts off creating chances. Neither has been able to finish consistently, but they are helping the other teammates score. It was very similar to Hossa last year. he didn’t show up on the score sheet that often, but I don’t think there was a person here who criticized his effort.

What really surprised me last night was that one of the “young hockey player” moments from last night was illustrating Kane’s defensive responsibility. I almost spit out my beer. While I have seen Kane be more defensively responsible so far this season, I wasn’t expecting his defense to be part of a teaching moment.

Its been nice to see Kane being more committed to defensive plays – he’s lifting sticks, backchecking etc…consistantly. If he really develops that he could be a really great 2 way player. But yes, that is probably the first time he’s been used to teach a defensive play. ALSO when one of the guys said something like “oh kane laid a really good check on xxx(don’t remember who)” Besides his hit on Oduya (which I still can’t find) I don’t think he’s ever been praised for that, haha.

But he was the one telling us how Luongo (whom I do absolutely admire and respect) was a completely different goaltender this year, and he was not going to have any sort of relapse into the stuff that we saw in the last two years playoff series.

Also, he told us that the Blackhawks don’t have what it takes to beat the Canucks in a 7 game series and, since he does respect our team he figured we might be able to extend it to maybe a 5th or 6th game.

I like the extending that we’ve done the last two… but they had better do it again

I watched quite a bit of Canucks hockey this year

and Lu did not look anything like the goalie of old. This is really the first he has shown any cracks and much of it is that the team is letting him down too.

Lu is hurt.

Something’s wrong with his arm. He was holding it Tuesday night when he skated off after the 1st. Nobody’s talking, but I think it’s pretty fucking obvious if you watch him.

Good on him for gutting it out, but the Lu seen most of this season stops at least 3 or 4 of the goals against the last two games.

One or two goals, at most. You cannot have your defensemen back on their heels and scrambling around out of position, trying to check guys into the boards at every opportunity, thereby losing the free man to basically tee it up and blast away from less than 50 feet. I can’t remember the last time Keith had that much freedom to line up his shot, take his time before shooting to get into perfect position, then have little to no interference while letting it fly. And that happened more than a few times last game, if you’ll remember.

Just a few thoughts

-Great to see Hossa get in on the fun last night.

-Last night provided some really good balance in the score sheet. Eight guys with at least one point and only six (Scott included and three of the others were Bolland, Toews and Kane) didn’t have a + next to their name.

-Keith entered beast mode last night and has looked good the past two games.

-Final thought: If I have learned anything from playing NHL ‘10 and watching Hossa in last nights game it’s this: Glove side!

They have two liter bottles now? To think I spent all that time demanding a liter!

Consider this new territory for the Canucks

For the past two seasons, the road to that big shiny thing always went through Chicago. This year, sure, the Nucks had a wonderful season and even found themselves up 3-0 to a left for dead Hawks team. But it’s as if the Nucks never expected that to happen and now have no idea how to do to get out of this. Bottom line is, they’ve never been in a situation like this with the Hawks. This is all new to this Nucks team. I hope they never find a way out and we prevail. Two exciting wins are awesome, no doubt, but I still approach all this with guarded optimism.

To be fair, this is inching closer to being uncharted territory for everyone

3-0 series comebacks have happened 4 times in NORTH AMERICAN PROFESSIONAL SPORTS, and an 8 seed coming back on a 1 would defy all precedent.

Which is scary. Game 6 is brutal on emotions and energy. It may or may not be done but it starts Sunday to find out. While I still have no expectations I’m just enjoying the ride. I cant even imagine the series going to that 7th game

I was kind of a dick to people

all last year and for about the first half of this year for labeling almost every game a trap game, but if there’s such a thing as a trap game in the playoffs for the Hawks I think Game 6 might qualify.

My Bruins friends disappeared for two months after last year

I sent milk cartons to their houses with pictures of them and each of the four game-wining-goals on the sides. When we finally got together they burned the cartons in front of me and then tried to set me on fire with the pieces. Then we played hockey and they spent two hours shooting at me the way Wendel Clark did when he tried to kill Curtis Joseph.

Playoff Hockey

I understood to a certain extent and knew where the feeling was coming from a couple weeks ago when fans thought not making the playoffs would be OK. However, please let these two games serve as Exhibit A and Exhibit B why playoff hockey in Chicago is an absolute must every single year. Go Hawks! Though the rest will help, I wish we were playing at Noon today!
