2010-2011 Player Evaluations: Corey Crawford

On most teams, a rookie stealing the number one spot from a veteran goalie is something of a shock.  It ought to be one of the main story lines of the season... but not for the Blackhawks.  After Niemi took the spot from Huet last year, we were treated to the same story again this year as Turco simply didn't work out the way we had hoped. Corey Crawford didn't exactly come out of nowhere like Niemi did though, he's been billed as the Hawks "goalie of the future" for a while.. even if he did lose the back-up job to the Finn last year.  Crawford had a few cups of coffee with the club prior to this year but had only put together a 1-3-1 record while seeing time in 8 games.  Turco was expected to get a lot of starts but with his likely one and done contract, a lot of eyes were on Crawford to see if he'd be ready to take the #1 job in 11/12.  After nearly getting the Hawks a third Calder finalist in four years and backstopping the team to the playoffs... I'd say he's about ready.

Positives:  There's a lot to like here.  While there were plenty of people worrying about the loss of Niemi.. only the most boneheaded hang on to that lament after seeing Crawford step into the starting role this year.  The numbers between the two are damn near identical and that's with a far more consistent Sharks team in front of Niemi.  Crawford proved to be the quick athletic goalie we had heard about.  While he didn't have many games that he outright stole for the Hawks, he gave a chance damn near every time he was given the start.  Crawford was only pulled twice all year (once in Florida and once in the abomination that was the 5-0 loss to Dallas).  He also proved he could (reasonably) handle a strong workload.  With Turco faltering and the Hawks needing every damn point they could get down the stretch, Q was forced to ride Crawford hard.  For the most part, Craw lived up to probably even the highest expectations one could have had for the rookie netminder.

Negatives:  Only a few here, some of which you can't completely blame him for.  Obviously, the stretch towards the end of the season took its toll on Crawford.  He simply looked tired at times in February and March.  He had played a similar number of games in other leagues but at this level it zapped him.  He was able to rally back to finish the season strong and have a solid playoff series.

While he doesn't posses that wanderlust that doomed Turco one too many times, Crawford can get out of position and lose his post.  Make him scramble a bit and there is a decent chance that a spot will open up on his blocker side.  Rebound control can also be an issue at times, though not a major problem.  As I mentioned before though, he hasn't quite learned to steal a game.  He'll make solid saves but didn't come up with too many highlight reel ones.

Defining Moment:  We can go two ways here.  The first is just to say his moment was finally grabbing the starting gig and then running away with it.  I think he ended the season with 34 consecutive starts?  The Hawks needed a workhorse and Crawford was up to the task. For a guy who has spent probably far too long in the AHL, it was great to see him get his moment and go for it.

However, I think what Crawford will really be remembered for was going toe-to-toe with Roberto Luongo in the playoffs and getting the better of him.  While Borat had two solid games to start the series, he was also chased twice before being benched.  Meanwhile, Crawford kept rolling and even made some brilliant saves of his own, such as this one against the Sedins:

I remember another great moment where he made three saves in rapid succession, including finally gloving one from his stomach... but can't find the video.  I'm sure one of you can help me out.

Final Grade:  A-.  I don't think we could have really hoped for more from Crawford.  While it wasn't exactly a brilliant season, it was a great one for a guy just getting regular time in the NHL.

Outlook:  With Brent Seabrook locked up already, Corey Crawford is already identified as the Hawks #1 priority.  The goalie market probably won't be quite as deep this summer as it was last year but there's still a few names that will be looking for a deal.  He'll definitely need a raise though and hopefully the Hawks can find something manageable.  Crawford still needs tuning but luckily it seems goalie coach Stephane Waite is in the middle of a groove.  If the Hawks sign him, and there's little doubt that they will, Crawford will be all but guaranteed the starting gig from the start of the year and hopefully give us our first goalie controversy free season in the past couple years.  And won't that be nice?

I love the wishful thinking

regarding a goalie controversy.

But the nature of the beast is such that if Crawford shows any wavering and Salak (or whoever might wind up as the #2 — and for what it’s worth, I hope it’s NOT Salak — he needs to start regularly to continue his development) comes in and has a decent game or two, the debate will be up and running. Backup goalie is like backup quarterback. Unless your starter is flawless, there will always be those clamoring for “the other guy.”

About the best we can ever hope for is to avoid a return to “The Great Goalie Debate” of 09-10. Or that Crawford comes out of the box hot and stays that way.

An opinion should be the result of thought, not a substitute for it. (Jef Mallett)

by 334Rules on Apr 29, 2011 11:55 AM CDT reply actions

Even if Salak played well, there would only be controversy if Crawford really, really shit the bed.

If Crow is resigned he is the starter, and somebody would have to forcibly take that job. I think you’re overestimating the potential for a goaltending debate next season.

Unless of course Crow gets away, in which case we are royally fucked.

like a lot of goalies, don’t be surprised if he drops off a bit next year. the Hawks should be prepared to tighten up the D.

If he was 1-3-1 before this year, that win was a shutout- I remember. In fact, it was part of a string of 3 consecutive home shut-outs by 3 different goalies (Khabi, Huey, Crow) during the failed 2008 playoff push. That’s some good team D. Let’s see some of that next season.

Honestly I think we're overstating this

No argument that Van’s division opponents are weak, but…an NHL team only plays 32 of its 82 games against divisional opponents. It plays a total of 72 games against conference opponents and after all the Western conference as a whole is clearly the stronger one right? And the Canucks this season didn’t just run up the best record in the whole league, they did it by a comfortable margin.

They also led in most goals scored, fewest goals allowed, best power play, best faceoff percentage, most wins at home and most wins on the road. They were tied for second in penalty killing. All despite a whole bunch of injuries which forced them to use 13 different players on the blueline this season. Imagine if the Hawks had had to use the 5th-best D from Rockford or whatever?

The guy’s a whiny piece of crap, no argument, but the award is based on the regular season and that is one helluva piece of regular-season coaching work.

by Paul the Fossil on Apr 29, 2011 2:37 PM CDT up reply actions

I think your math is a bit off

24 (6 games X 4 opponents) games against division, 40 (4 games X 10 opponents) games against other divisions in same conference , 18 games against other conference (12 teams once, 3 of them get the home and road).

Although to your point Vancouver only had 8 more games against the other teams in their division than than the Hawks.

What a joke that is

If he could have pulled out that record with a weaker roster, then I could understand. His teaming winning the President’s trophy when they’re the best team on paper says absolutely nothing about his coaching.

Coaches like Barry Trotz are the ones that need to be looked at, not jackasses like AV. Shit, he got outcoached by Q in our series. How is that deserving of the Jack Adams?

What I want to know is why the Nucks were so much better this year?

I mean, they added Hamhuis (sp?) and subtracted SOB, but what else? The main group is pretty much the exact same guys, isn’t it? And yet they played with dominance for most of the season. How come? (I know—Lu is further back in his net and they’re supposedly more disciplined with the penalty thing this year. But that leads to the President’s trophy?)

Depth

Depth up the middle, especially with Malholtra was huge.

Depth on the d-line. Salo was on the top line for the Canucks last year, he was on the third d-pair this year. Last game last year the Canucks were down to 4 defensemen. This year they could field at least 8 or 9.

26-27 deep in players that could play in the NHL. So they could handle injuries better then the Hawks. Anybody the Hawks could have called up were already up this year.

Of course another big reason was Cory Schneider as the backup. You don’t usually win that many games from your backup goalie…

by DaleHalas on Apr 29, 2011 5:34 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't know if it accounts for everything

But you indicated the lack of moves. It’s amazing the effect familiarity with your teammates has on success. Why do you think the twins always play together? Because they’ve known each other and played together so long, they can practically read each others’ minds out there.

We turned over practically half our team last off-season, and while it wasn’t a tremendous drop-off in talent, it certainly was a drop-off in experience and familiarity. As a result, we struggled to find consistency all season. Just a thought.

I don't think the D was that bad ...

I think the forwards fucked up the transition game so badly that the Hawks’ D-men had to readjust their entire philosophy on the fly. I still would put my money on the Hawks defense over most other teams in the NHL right now. If Leddy keeps getting tighter and Campoli quits his day job as Head Chef at the Olive Garden we may be running 3 of the most solid parings around.

by Billy Charlesbois on Apr 29, 2011 3:39 PM CDT up reply actions

Not really defensively.

Outside of those two 500K guys at the beginning of the year, the defensemen weren’t that bad defensively. Hawks “d” didn’t have as good an offensive year this year but defensively there were even or better from last year.

I might put up a post on this. Not really seeing a lot of real analysis from what went wrong this year…

From a rivalry standpoint, that would make sense for Dallas.

Dallas-Minnesota? Natural rivals. They’re still pissed off up there about Norm Green. Dallas-Colorado and Dallas-Edmonton? Long and contentious playoff history. But Dallas being in a division called “Northwest” probably makes less sense than Dallas in the Pacific.

I don’t think Vancouver would like it, though. Even though it would make sense for all of the teams in the Pacific time zone to be in the Pacific division, I don’t think they’d want to give up their regular-season rivalries with Calgary and Edmonton up.

If there were a way to put Dallas in the Central division, maybe if Detroit (please! I don’t think Dallas wants to see them six times a year) or Columbus moves East because of a move by Atlanta to wherever, I could live with that.

I approve

The folks here in C-bus could really use a playoff appearance (if you can call the sweep in ’09 an appearance) more than once every 10 years. And getting shipped over to the EC should fix that problem.

And as an added bonus, I could finally cheer for the hometown team a lot more, given that many fewer of their games would have an impact on the Hawks.

It’s kind of interesting to look at and see all the ways you can break up the teams and divisions. It would be cool to somehow get all the Original Six teams back in the same conference. Here's what I came up with assuming the Jets move back to Winnipeg

As for Divisions, Toronto would become part of Central, Nashville would move to SE, Washington would move to Atlantic, NYR would move to NE and Colorado would move to renamed Pacific (SouthWest).

I’ve numbered each division by distance between teams. Obviously the teams out West are at a disadvantage. The way to overcome this would be that each conference would get a 1,2,and 3 division. This means that each team would travel about the same as the other teams in their same numbered divisions.

Now if the Thrashers move instead of PHX, you could put Dal in the SE. If both teams move, there will probably need to be more reshuffling.

Some of the things I like about this:
1. the Original 6 teams are in 2 divisions, 3 in each, possibly both in same conference.
2. Travel is spread out between the conferences.

Things I don’t like:
1. Bettman
2. Also Bettman
3. some regional rivalries will be split up. e.g. NYI v. NYR, NJ v. NYR, Buf v. Tor.
4. It will never happen because the people in charge don’t care about what I type on a Blkhwks blog. The teams in the Eastern Conference would hate to do this financially because they have a big advantage over the west in terms of travel costs and fatigue.

Tell the Eastern Conference boo-frickin'-whoo.

Let the Rangers or Devils or someone up there play out of Dallas in a year. Then they can whine about travel and fatigue (plus games on the coast starting at the time people in Dallas are getting ready for bed).

Agreed that

none of us are in control of it… I just get frustrated at how often people say there shouldn’t be hockey out here. If I lived in phoenix/could get the time off from Uncle Sam I’d go to all the games I could afford to go to… just to support my local team, unfortunately as it is I can usually only make it to the Hawks games. Although I do make it to those, wouldn’t ever wanna miss the Hawks. The thought of having my only option to see my most favoritest team in all of sports be to travel to some far off land, is kind of disheartening.

I think it was a great save

but at the same time, Kesler didn’t elevate the puck. He had Crow dead to rights and put it in a spot that Crow could make a save. Yes it was great, but at the same time it was also Kesler not finishing.

Crawford has been great this year. The only thing I don’t like is when he ends up on his belly or down and there is a scramble, he doesn’t always seem to try to get up.

I don't believe Miller has it anymore

but whoever has that puck right now knows exactly where and exactly what it is. It’s not like it’s “lost” and will eventually turn up in the attic of an elderly grandmother’s bungalow in Berwyn. My hunch is Steve Miller gave it to someone, probably not long after he left the ice with it in his pocket. There’s enough heat on him that if he still had it in his possession, by now he would have found a discreet way to arrange its miraculous re-appearance.

If this story continues to snowball, as I sincerely hope it will, the pressure will soon be enough to convince whoever is holding it to cough it up like a Luongo rebound.

It has to do with the number of games played the season before.

“To be eligible for the award, a player cannot have played any more than 25 games previously in any single season, nor have played in more than six games in each of two separate preceding seasons in any major professional league.” Of course, there is also the age requirement – the nominee must be 26 or younger by 15 September of their rookie season, because Sergei Markov was 31 when he beat out 19-year-old Mike Modano for the award after playing for the Red Army team in the USSR previously.

Couture played exactly 25 regular-season games last season. Apparently, there is nothing in the rules about playoff games.
