2010-2011 Player Evaluations: Jake Dowell
After spreading 21 games over the previous three years, Jake Dowell got his chance to spend some a full season with the Hawks. He played in 79 games plus 2 in the playoffs. The Hawks were desperate for guys playing center and thought Dowell could fill in well on the fourth line. They also likely hoped he could fill out some size in the bottom of the roster and bring some physicality. That only sort of worked...
Contract Status: RFA - $525K Cap Hit in 2010-2011
Positives: 21 points and a +5 for Dowell is honestly more than we really expected out of the fourth liner in his first real time in the league. Especially when you factor in what our third and fourth lines looked like for most of this year. You could argue that he did also bring a good physical game to the squad - he was third among forwards in hits. He brought some extra sandpaper to the team as well. Dowell led the team in fighting majors (he had 9 - one more than John Scott). He held his own in that regard, going 4-4-1 according to the fine people at hockeyfights. He was also willing to sacrifice himself, blocking 43 shots, the most of any forward. Dowell's key area of development though was becoming a fairly solid penalty killer. He averaged 90 seconds a game on the ice shorthanded and put up solid stats throughout. You'd imagine his agent will be selling this point pretty hard.
Negatives: While 21 points is pretty good, they don't tell the full story. Dowell had 15 points in 2010 and only added another 6 in the current calendar year. Not exactly the consistency we were looking for. He didn't really excel in the physical aspect of the game either. Sure he racked up a ton of hits but do any of them really stand out? I can't remember any really. Fights are nice but at least one was pretty ill-timed and none of those stand out either. Though at least he did make Segal bleed pretty good.. Faceoffs are something to be worked on as well in the offseason... 48.9% isn't godawful but there's room for improvement.
Defining Moment: The aforementioned Segal fight. In the thick of one of the most ridiculous playoff races in memory, Bryan Bickell was a late scratch with no replacement on the roster, leaving the Hawks to dress 11 forwards for the game, one of whom was John Scott (so basically 10). Pretty good time to settle a score from the AHL, huh Jake?
Outlook: As a RFA, it'll all come down to how much he's asking for and what other options the Hawks have available. If the price is right, I'd imagine the Hawks would certainly welcome Dowell back next year. At 26, we're probably not going to see much more improvement from Dowell but he can still fill in a fourth line role. Personally, I'd like to see what he can do in that spot with actual forwards at his sides, not Scott or Hendry like we saw too often. He showed potential to be more than just a body on the fourth line and could perhaps give the Hawks some extra rest for their core players if trusted with more time. Consistency will be the question though. If it was an injury that caused his drop off in production then a full year healthy could be a welcome addition next year. If it wasn't an injury, well lets hope he can fix whatever it was that bringing him down.
Grade: C+. I feel like that may be a little harsh but I really can't justify giving him much higher. He was about what we would expect and not much more. Had he played his whole season the way he started out, it would be much higher.

I really do wonder about the likelihood of Scott getting more ice time next season. And I do think that playoffs or regular season, when you get benched many times and then a guy like Scott goes in and plays 5mins or less, you’ve gotta end up with some morale issues.

That could have also had to do with Dowell playing hurt
I’ve read that he may have broken his ankle when he caught a slapshot there against Columbus back at the beginning of February. That would certainly explain the sharp drop-off in his production as well as Q playing John Scott over him in the playoffs

But the reality is that Q is going to be the coach of this team and Q doesn’t trust having him out there. Not fair to Dowell, but that seems to be the reality of the situation. Why carry him on the squad if you know Q is going to sit him down when it matters, then we get stuck with some IceHog or John Scott out there in a meaningful playoff game.

If Dowell was healthy and Q still went with Scott over him, then I’d agree with you that clearly Q doesn’t trust him and it’d bad both for him and for the ‘Hawks to keep him. But if he was playing hurt, I think that’s a mitigating factor. He suited up for 79 games in the regular season, so I just have trouble with the idea that Q doesn’t trust him

Sure, they aren’t great players, but they’re better forwards than John Scott. Q valued scott’s “toughness” or the intimidation factor that he believed Scott brought, that’s why he was playing instead of Dowell and Pisani.
I don’t get how you see Q dressing Scott as a sign of him trusting Scott more than another forward when it was nothing more than him being a meatball and valuing toughness over skill at the forward position (for that particular game).

John Scott had 59 seconds of TOI in Game 6. Call it what you want; intimidation factor, superstition/luck (since scott played in games 4 and 5 which resulted in hawks wins), an insurance policy in case of another blow out, etc. Whatever Q based his decision on, I’m fairly certain that it wasn’t based on hockey skill at the forward position, and the 59 seconds proves that.

For a 4th line player
I thought Dowell did all right. In my opinion, the importance of depth players isn’t so much about points – any point production from the 4th line is purely an added bonus – but about the ability to put them on the ice during critical minutes without having to worry about a monumental fuck-up. Whomever the ‘Hawks employ on the 4th line doesn’t have to go out and light up the scoreboards, they merely have to be able to play down the stretch so that guys like Toews and Kane can get an additional 30-40 seconds of rest and be that much fresher when they get back on the ice. Personally, I think that Dowell fits that role and so long as he doesn’t expect anything above the minimum 110% of his previous years’ salary when the ’Hawks tender him a qualifying offer I have no qualms about bringing him back.

I think its really important for next season that the roster has guys who can play meaningful minutes throughout the games. Last quarter of the season the top guys (forwards) had games where they played 25/26+ minutes, they were being double shifted right off the bat, and there was definitely one, maybe more, games where the first unit was on the ice for the PP the whole 2 minutes. Not exactly conducive to keeping them guys fresh and energized. I feel like Dowell’s play took a step back towards the end of the season, but I think he could be better, and at the right price I wouldn’t mind bringing him back.

That’s his qualifying number. Since he made under $600K, his qualifying number is 110% of his 2010-‘11 salary of $550K.
As far as Dowell’s play taking a step back, I read a claim on bleacher report that he’d been playing fairly hurt after taking slapshot to the ankle against Columbus on Feb. 1. That seems feasible if you consider that up to that point he had 17 points and was a plus-11, whereas for the rest of the season he was a minus-6 and only registered 4 more points. If the injury was severe enough that it really hampered his game that much, and of course management would have a much better idea of this than we fans, then that serves to further the argument in favor of bringing him back.

Not really sure how much it may havee to bear
on his performance over the second half of the season, but I read somewhere that he had taken a puck off of his ankle just after the all star break and suffered a broken bone. Whether or not that is true is certainly up for speculation but may have played a roll in his second half drop in production.
For a 4th liner that started out the way he did this past season, I would have no problems about bringing him back at the minimum raise. Like Kills said, with real forwards on his sides maybe he has more to offer.

But I feel he might be able to fit in well, and if he was injured (wouldn’t be surprised, seems like everyone on this team was…) maybe he can play next season like he started. I guess time will tell. It’s not like he is going to be expensive by any means.

His qualifying number is $605,000, and from what he’s shown so far particularly with the late season drop-off (even if it was due to injury) he’s not likely to garner anything more than that on the open market. If the ‘Hawks tender him a qualifying offer of $605,000 there’s no reason for him not to sign.

The question will be if the management would rather pay 500k or so more for a more-than-serviceable 4th line center.
You get what you pay for, and if the hawks manage their free agents right, they should be able to find the 500-700k to put some money into the 4th center.

he had 17 goals, 29 assists and was +14 for a pretty mediocre Rockford team in 76 games.
Apparently he missed a record amount of breakaways. Probably would have had a ton more goals.

While I appreciated Dowell’s contributons this year, something struck me today. Is he really any better than Colin Fraser? I realize Fraser had an off year in Hockey’s equivalent of Siberia, (Edmonton), but i liked the way he played. Adam Fels once said, “Hockey is played by the brave, not the smart.” Not sure of the smart part, but I don’t think anyone ever questioned Colin’s machismo. like Kopecky, it seemed he relished getting punched in the face in front of the opposition’s crease.
not sure why they traded him, when at best it was a toss up between the two.
By the way, watch out for the Siberian Oilers next season.

FYI - Second Punic War and Hannibal
After assaulting Saguntum, Hannibal surprised the Romans in 218 BC. by leading the Iberians, and three dozen elephants through the Alps. This move had a double edged effect. Although Hannibal surprised the Romans and thoroughly beat them on the battlefields of Italy, he lost his only siege engines and most of his elephants to the cold temperatures and icy mountain paths. In the end it allowed him to defeat the Romans in the field, but not in the strategically crucial city of Rome itself, thus making him unable to win the war.
Hannibal defeated the Roman legions in several major engagements, including the Battle of the Trebia, the Battle of Lake Trasimene and most famously at the Battle of Cannae, but his long-term strategy failed. Lacking siege engines and sufficient manpower to take the city of Rome itself, he had planned to turn the Italian allies against Rome and starve the city out through a siege. I would only add
That another reason that Hannibal won the battle but eventually lost the war was because his army was made up of a lot of irregulars and mercenaries, while the Roman Legions were primarily citizens from the Republic itself – big difference IMHO. And I believe they rectified their strategic decision in Cannae in later engagements. Most of this information I’ve gleaned from Victor Davis Hansen’s books on the battles.

Hockey is a long time prep school sport, along with its blue collar allure
so you’d get a strange mix of very wealthy sorts with kids headed to Ivy League or other top notch places and blue collar kids (although the folks tended to be decent income trade blue collar).
A very high percentage of ADD kids too – I had as much as a 1/3 of the team on Ritallin (and a couple more should have been)

at best it was a toss up between the two.
Let’s see, Fraser didn’t was often a healthy scratch toward the end of the year and barely played in the playoffs (yeah, sounds a lot like Dowell). But at $700k Fraser was already making about 40% more than Dowell got and Fraser was still due an automatic raise.
He signed in Edmo for about $825k. So basically the Hawks could almost pay two guys for the price they were paying for a guy lucky to be playing in the NHL – like most 4th liners. No brainer.

I see your point. In my “general” assessment, I just liked Fraser a bit more. couldn’t put my finger on any solid measuring stick, I just liked the way he played hockey.

I had the same thought, about Dowell vs Fraser
so I decided to compare the stats, 2010-11 Dowell versus 2009-10 Fraser. I chose last year Fraser (as opposed to his banishment this year to Edm) because I was wondering if Dowell was (statistically) an upgrade.
2009-10 Frazzle Stats GP 70 G 7 A 12 PT 19 +/- 6 PIM 44 PP 0 SH 0 GW 0 S 92 S% 7.6
2010-11 Dowell Stats GP 79 G 6 A 15 PT 21 +/- 5 PIM 63 PP 0 SH 0 GW 0 S 74 S% 8.1
As for the playoffs, Dowell played in 2 playoff games & only had 1S while Fraz played in 3 playoff games w/1S as well.
To me, it seems like a push stats-wise, although I give a slight edge to Dowell, since last year’s team’s depth was so much better. Both are the same age, but Dowell is a lot cheaper at 525K than Frazzle was at 700K.
So in the end, I think it worked out with Dowell, although there is always room for improvement. I wouldn’t mind having him back for cheap- there’s only so much you can expect from a fourth line center, although I do think he could be a serviceable pivot for a checking line at some point. And hell, he’s better at FOs than Bolland. Not that it’s really that difficult to be better at FOs than Bolly…

i generally try not to let off-ice stuff interfere with who I think the team should keep, but Dowell’s got such a hard luck story (father and brother suffering from Huntington’s) that i’m pulling for the guy.
He can play some PK, deliver some hits, and he isn’t a moron in his own end.

for Jake Dowell to start strong and gradually build and solidify his role as a good fourth line center who will consistently tick off 40 seconds on most PKs. Instead, he started strong and gradually faded, and the C+ issued by Kills seems fair to me.
A hidden injury in Feb doesn’t explain November, December, and January. But it does give him a legitimate reason to request a Mulligan next season, and I’m not ready to give up on him yet. I’d offer him one at the minimum increase and tell him that 2011-12 needs to be the season where he starts strong, gradually builds, you know the rest.

I was surprised when I read that it was that many. And I guess that pretty much says what his value to the team is: I just didn’t notice him much. And when his defining moment is an ill-timed fight, that doesn’t say much for him either.
I guess he’s serviceable, cheap, and will make something good happen once in a while. That IS pretty much a fourth liner isn’t it? (Although, as I read that back, it kind of sounds like an ugly hooker or something. Not that I would know anything about that…)

Dowell could very well be a solution for some time if he gets his game together and plays consistently well, which he could do.

i think so to about Johnson
his ability to win the draw, when we sorely needed it, meant he was out a lot even just to win the draws and then skate off ice once it was out of the zone. If Dowell can improve his overall play and face off skills (not sure what his average was actually) he’s the better option even just because of Johnson’s injury history. But this season at least, we needed someone to win the puck, especially at the end, and Dowell was not the one that did it.

Thomas’ mask coming off only results in an immediate stoppage in play if the Bruins have control of the puck and/or a scoring chance isn’t imminent, IIRC. They went through the whole thing earlier in the playoffs over Boucher taking off his mask in one of the Philly series, Seeing as Tampa had the puck and scoring chances were totally imminent, play continues.

Echo the comments here that at the right minimum (qualifying as max, please?) price, it’d be worth seeing Dowell play with actual 4th liners, rather than with collections of spare parts and particularly hominid-like apes like Pisani, Scott, Hendry, et al. There’s enough there to warrant a real shot.

My impression is that what Wilson did was perfectly legal, but kind of a big no – no among the cloisetered world of NHL GM’s. Could be wrong, but it definitely surprised the rest of the league, at least if rumors are to be believed.
