2010-2011 Player Evaluations - Bryan Bickell
Bryan Bickell, yet another guy who has spent years in the Hawks system but only had sporadic and brief call ups to the Hawks but finally got his first full year after the great purge of last summer. Is anyone else getting sick of reading the same old story? Because I'm getting sick of writing it. Much like Jake Dowell, a quick look at Bickell and you see a guy built to make life hell on the forecheck (hey, just like that blog!), get in the goalies space and maybe add a few goals. We got some of that...
Contract Status: Signed through 2012-13, ~542K Cap Hit
Positives: There's actually a lot to like about Bickell's first full season. As Hockee Night points out, Bickell had just as many goals and more assists than another recently departed big guy (who's now a Jet evidently, ain't that some shit?) that is oft lamented in many circles. Bickell's 37 points may be one of the more under-talked about aspects of last season. While the praise heaped upon Crawford (and now all the monies) is much deserved, Bickell himself had a hell of a rookie campaign. No one's going to confuse him with Jeff Skinner (especially because Bickell looks like he actually needs to shave) but his 37 points put him 12th overall among rookies this year. A few of those goals came on some pretty nice sniper wrist shots from the circle... but more on that later. Bickell also proved to be pretty versatile, getting time on just about every line and even grabbing a little power play time. Bickell is obviously best suited for a third line role and he seemed to find himself at home with Dave Bolland when he was healthy. Lets hope we see more of that next year.
Negatives: The biggest complaint about Bickell far and away is that he just doesn't play up to his size. Maybe his locker was next to John Scott and he lost perspective or something but at 6'4 and 225, Bickell is by far one of the largest Hawks. He did rack up plenty of hits but apart from the borderline run on Bieksa, none of them really stand out in my mind. It may take a little time for Bickell to develop some confidence in his physical game but he doesn't have a ton to spare. He'll need to step this up next year. Apart from just laying out punishment on other players, Bickell needs to drop the notion that he's ever going to be a sniper in this league. It's true that he's got a great wrister... it just takes an hour to unload. If the space is there, great. It's not there often though and Bickell would be much better off just crashing the net or better yet, finding space to park himself in front of the goalie and create some chaos in the crease.
Defining Moment: As much as I'd like to just pick Bickell walking around Bieksa in the playoffs, that hardly defines his season, does it? No, instead goals like this were far more common
Given the time and space, Bickell could be deadly...Though again, just in case he's reading, it's not common enough for him to think of himself as a sniper. Please, take the puck to the net.
Outlook: Well, there is that whole pesky wrist surgery Bickell is going to have to deal with this summer. After suffering a laceration from a skate in Game 2 (or was it 3?), Bickell had to leave the Hawks early to make sure there was no lasting effect to his hand. From all accounts though, this should be something easy to recover from and he won't be likely to miss any time next year. This is very good news for Stan as Bickell's super low cap hit and high return make him very valuable for a team that's still going to have to scrimp and save to stay under the cap. Bickell also seemed to find his own in the playoffs too, scoring 4 points in just 5 games. Bickell isn't going to be going anywhere next year and could be a very large piece to the puzzle that is the bottom 6 on this roster. Also, he was born in a place called Bowmanville... do you really think Stan's going to trade a guy from there?
Final Grade: B-, Hey! A grade above a C, that's a welcome sight, ain't it? It may even be a little low for a rookie who put up those points when no one expected it. I just can't get over a player his size not using it to his full advantage on a team that desperately needed it. Still, for his price, Bickell is key for the Hawks next year, especially if he can continue to improve.

I like Bickell a lot
He’s big, he’s got a wicked snap shot, he’s responsible defensively, and he’s signed for just-barely-above-minimum for 2 more years. He had some really nice chemistry with Bolland at the end of the season, here’s hoping he can build on that and keep developing going into the fall.
Responsible defensively?
Either you or I need a new TV.

He can stay at his price. Infuriating that he doesn’t play up to his size, but Ill take the goals he pots.

Bickell and Hjammer
They need to take a retreat out into the woods and find their inner tough guy. When Bickell did hit people it was nice. I do remember when he flattened Hornqvist from Nashville, it was a nice site. Hopefully more of that will happen.
This is over. You can go ahead and order the autopsy now.
i hope he learned from his first full season
could be 1 of 3 things happen
1- plays to size and we reap the rewards
2-continues to score but not hit and we continue to bitch about him not playing to his size
3-does neither of above and were bitching about him not scoring and playing to his size calling for meatheads to insert Scott at forward
A little more checking on the checking line please
plus the goals, yeah and it’d be a good deal for the money. That highlight happened so fast I had to watch it a couple of times to actually see the puck go into the net. Not sure if that is just poor camera work or what, but more of that (and the aforementioned hits), and he’d be rated an A next year. Love to hear us all say Andrew Ladd who?
Is a Sedin trying to say something from Dave Bolland's back pocket?

One other thing about Bicks
He seems to have a lack of… ahem, personality. As a fan, it’s often their emotions on-ice (plus performance of course) that endears players to me. So, I would love to see something more in that department too. Right now, he seems more like a robot out there.
Toews doesn't have any personality. Really most the Hawks dont.
Kaner pretty much carries the water in the personality department.

I think having Toews
to counter-balance the sheer amount of personality Kaner has works out pretty well.
i call everyone 'bro' regardless of gender or age... which makes running into old ladies at the grocery store kind of awkward.
But that IS his personality!
And I love him for it! See the following for more:
Toews makes funny faces – no one tries harder than Captain Serious
Hossa is IMHAYN
Keith and Seabs are still Days of our Defense bromance
Kane is, well Kaner
Kopy is like the goofy little brother everyone makes fun of
And so Bickell is….. what? I got nothing. That’s all I was saying :)
Sorry, should have used the sarcasm flag. :)
I love the fact that Bolland’s reactions to things often seem nonsensical to normal humans.
Bickell gives off a bit of a “country bumpkin” vibe to me.
Sarcasm noted!
And bicks with the missing tooth def has that vibe… it’s just not that endearing.
Trust me, I’ll take solid play with lots of nice goals over personality anytime, but still….
Well, we did rid ourselves of "Country Stupid" less than a year ago.

Infuriating
Bickell was 2nd among rookies in hits with 178 hits (40 more than the 3rd place finisher). He was 2nd on the team to Brouwer in Hits/TOI.
It’s amazing to me that Brouwer was 5th in the league in Hits, but I didn’t notice anyone here singing his praises. Everyone wants the highlight reel hits, but no one seems satisfied with guys who can effectively hit and not leave themselves out of position.
For a team who got regularly outhit and wasn’t built to be physical, the Hawks had 3 guys in the league’s top 40 – and all three are also skilled players. That’s impressive. It’s the weakness of the majority of the rest of the team that hurts the Hawks.
The next person who bitches about Brouwer, Bickell (or Seabrook) “not playing to his size,” I’m going to put into the boards.

but let me ask you
how often did you notice him being physical. The hits stat can be mis-leading to me at least but just because he and brouwer out there with hits i rarely noticed it much. Im not saying he can but more often than not i would notice him not finishing a check
please no checking me, i only have 1 good hand
there's a problem with just looking at "hit" numbers
It’s way too subjective and generously favors the home team and is relative to how much caffine the scorer has consumed. It’s not something like goals or PIM that have an exact number behind them. It’s great to have high numbers but you have to question how much impact they have and there’s no good scale for that. It’s a lot of eye test here so I think it’s perfectly acceptable for someone to question Bicks or Brouwer playing to their size

Sure Hits are subjective
but it all pretty much averages out, especially since 41 of those games are on the road.
Plus, if someone is going to state “home team bias,” well there’s 18 other skaters out there for the home team. You would have to claim that the scorer had a bias for giving Bickell credit for hits and not other players.
What this adds up to is people overstating “Hits are subjective and discountable.” Yes, they are subjective, but a large majority of players will fall well within an acceptable margin of error.
Again, I’ll take a guy who routinely and effectively hits to separate a player from the puck over a player who hits to separate a player from his head but gets left out of position to do so. It’s extremely difficult to do both.
I know McClure claims that Bickell is not defensively responsible, but I don’t remember any other forwards putting guys into the boards in the defensive zone to gain possession more than Bickell. No, they seldom were monster hits, but they were quite effective. He may have his weaknesses in open ice, but he was well above average along the boards where he tied up the opposition. That’s where he used his size. He was difficult to get around or get away from.

I'm a Brouwer fan
….Seabrook and Brouwer were the only two that hit consistently. Brouwer would even answer the bell for team-mates. Bottom line is/ was we lack scorers and hitters—-something we gave up with Ladd, Eager, Buff, Burish and Versteg. Those roles were never filled. Bickell scored but really didn’t hit. Skille, Stals, Dowell Johnson, Pisiani….the list goes on ….had no scorer’s touch and no grit. Just fabulous skaters :)

This is
how I felt about Buff last year, and I agree, just cause all the hits aren’t memorable, doesn’t mean they aren’t effective.
Too many commas
but by the same token just because he's hitting a lot (2nd most among rookies)
doesn’t mean they are effective either

So in order to not believe the believeable
we’re gonna say that the number 2 hitter among rookies is not an “effective” hitter? How do you possibly justify or define that?
I’d bet that if any player that’s 6’4" and 225 lays a hit on a you, it’s gonna be rather effective, simply based on the laws of physics.

brouwer had the most hits this season for the hawks
I had a conversation just the other day with Hjammertime (I think it was Hjammertime) who said while that may be the case it doesn’t mean he was doing it effectively. So that can be true of Brouwer but not Bickell?

I never said it wasn't true of Brouwer
The whole problem with this argument is that the incorrect definition (IMO) comes from the top down. We’ve read this so many times and it appeared again today. From Sam, " He did rack up plenty of hits but apart from the borderline run on Bieksa, none of them really stand out in my mind."
It’s playing both sides of the fence. We see write-ups complaining about guys running around to make highlight reel hits but leaving themselves out of position. But then when the hits aren’t of the spectacular variety the comments are “Well, I really didn’t notice him.”
By my definition, an effective hitter isn’t necessarily someone who blows guys up. He picks his spots for those, but in the meantime uses hitting to gain puck possession and to wear the opposition down. I think Bickell did that pretty well.

And by impact I don’t mean the strength of his hit, I’m taking as what the hit did for the play. Your eyetest tells you he did. Great. Seems not everyone’s does though.

Well then I guess the Hawks had 3 of the top 40 hitters

I wonder if I could win an argument stating that the Hawks had 3 of the 40 top scorers in the league, but only one was an effective goalscorer because the other two, I don’t recall their goals much.

Again, I’m not saying HE wasn’t effective. I’m saying that while he had a lot of hits, not all of the HITS were effective. Maybe not even most of them were. Maybe most of them were. I don’t know. But what’s so wrong about asking the question?

you keep reiterating the same point
about hits and your eye test.
Bickell was a rookie. A big body, on a small team. He hit a lot, on a team that didn’t.
He scored a lot, without being surrounded by talent (except for Bolland for half the year).
He was a + player.
why the need to harp on this subjective opinion about hit quality?

scoring is ... by definition ... effective. Hitting is not
The purpose of checking is to separate the other team from the puck (ideally with your team acquiring possession).
It is certainly possible to rather indeiscriminately run into a lot of people and really pad your hit numbers without a great many of those hits doing much of anything o help the team. Think of a lot of the “finishing the check” hits you see – the guy has already gotten rid of the puck and gets a light, rather late hit. Just about worthless to the team.
I am not saying that either Bickell or Brouwer are not useful players for their physicality – they both are, and I would be happy to see both back (assuming Brouwer’s price is right) but there are a fair number of their hits that come off rather superfluous.
Confusion will be my epitaph.
The Cup is ours until someone takes it from us.

/facepalm
That could be said of EVERY hitter in the league.
I basically stated the exact same thing about hitting, but IMO many of Bickell’s hits were not superfluous when compared to the NHL average. Many of his hits were smart hockey plays to gain possession. The problem apparently is that they weren’t thundering hits and therefore “he doesn’t play to his size.”
Krome, I’m not sure how “scoring is … by definition … effective. Hitting is not” though? That would be like saying a guy is not an effective defender, or he’s not an effective puck stealer. I believe effective play in many areas leads to goal scoring, not the other way around.

20 to 25 goals
should be Bickell next season. He’s only a bit of confidence and some consistency away from that. Consistent linemates, consistent TOI, consistent use of his size…..
I don’t know that he can be the second coming of Brouwer when he went off during the year of the Cup, given that Brow had a lot of time on the top line, but Bickell could get close to that kind of performance.
Anyone but Vancouver.
I’m gonna say we shouldn’t expect to see Bickell eclipse the 20 goal mark. 15-20 goals/season would be a fair expectation from him. Going back to what I wrote about him last summer…
Bryan Bickell (1, 2, 3, 4)- He’s tough and has decent offensive skills for a big man. He’s also one of the more versatile players of the new forwards…in that he can play – when he wants – all four lines effectively. If Brouwer doesn’t start off strong, Bickell could battle him for a power forward spot on one of the top lines. Like Byfuglien, Bickell’s biggest weakness is his apparent lack of focus. But whereas Byfuglien often looked lost when he wasn’t parked in front of the net, Bickell’s basically the opposite. He needs to improve his net presence compared to his size, but I have high hopes for Bickell and expect a 30-35 pt season from him if he’s not stuck on the 4th line. Bolland and Bickell together could prove to be a very annoying combination for opponents.
Bickell’s “size” weakness is his lack of net presence. But he spent most of his time on the 3rd line where that isn’t an issue. 3rd liners are going to be regularly out-chanced by the opposition’s top lines and don’t normally have the opportunity to get to the net – at least if they don’t want to be caught down low when the play is going the other way. They’re more of a “hit and run” line.
People complained about Bickell’s long shots, but it worked – last year. I think his numbers were slightly inflated though because one can’t expect that high of a shooting percent from a lower quality scoring chance – unless his wrister is really that incredible, which I doubt.
I think he needs to crash the net a little bit more, even if he’s on the 3rd line, but I’m not going to complain about the results so far. If somehow he finds himself on the top 2 lines, then it could become an issue worth complaining about.

Gotta keep age in mind
he’s still only 24, so he was only 22 2 season ago when he spend the season in the Panthers organization. He’s had 2 more years of playing and developing, including last year in Europe where he was starting. I’m not saying I expect him to come in, light the league on fire, and make a serious play for Crow’s starting job; what I am saying is that $600K is a good price for a back-up goalie, especially one who’s still young and will develop and get better over the season as he faces NHL quality shots every day in practice for the first time in his career as opposed to a 35-year-old veteran who’s got the same amount of skill/ability but won’t be getting any better and probably wants a little more money.

For goalies, it’s age, number of games played and a bunch of other stuff. but they probably won’t have to put him on waivers to send him up or down. Not that I’m some sort of CBA wizard or anything.

Yes
At least one last time.
Can he do any worse than Turco if he’s the backup next year? I highly doubt. Odds are much greater that he will over-perform based on his career numbers and the scouting reports. And for 40% of what Turco was paid, this is a great move and a no-brainer in my book. If he starts in Rockford that too should be a nice improvement for them and he can still get called up.
No way the Hawks should risk letting a potential above-average goalie get away when they are EXTREMELY weak in goaltending depth. This was likely the type of secure contract they had to give him to keep him.

I don't mind fiesty...
I’ve heard Salak has taken several penalties for being too aggressive, though.
That’s something that he cannot do – the agitators in the NHL will eat him alive.
by transienthawk on May 20, 2011 3:09 PM CDT up reply actions
Agreed
feisty-ness and not taking shit are definitely good things, but only so long as he’s able to stay under control and not take stupid penalties. Standing up for himself is one thing, but if it’s easy enough to get in his head and force a stupid reaction there are just too many guys in the NHL that have perfected that “pest” role…
by FrankStallone on May 20, 2011 3:12 PM CDT up reply actions
I'm not advocating for that kind of reaction
But at times that kind of attitude bodes well if things don’t go exactly the way you planned in a game – don’t get too mad, but most importantly, get even.
Well yeah that's a big no
I don’t want him, going crazy on ice and knocking people around. But I’ve always liked watching when the goalies don’t take shit, and will push guys out of the crease if they need to. Crawfords’ done it, and Lundqvist is another who can be aggressive, but not wildly so that they get penalties for it.

Yeah but I think more often then not he is reigned in

This sounds like fun.
Salak can challenge Luongo to a fight.
This is over. You can go ahead and order the autopsy now.
No, that fight would never happen
Because once his fist grazed Lou’s temple, he would immediately go down in a heap.
Experience needed.
I’d feel much better paying twice that amount for a Conklin/Garon/Labarbera type.

well no,
I’d prefer to have a veteran with >.9 … it just appears to me that having crawford and salak on the team is begging for a double-meltdown.
what other choices do they have?

unless some sucker takes Hossa
by Canuckslicknutsak on May 20, 2011 1:46 PM CDT up reply actions
There is the potential of a double-meltdown
but I’m gonna remain optimistic and think of this as a good thing. Having a young, good goalie who’s trying to develop into a quality NHL starter in his own right as a back-up will push Crawford to keep working, keep improving, and never be satisfied much more so than a veteran career back-up ever could.
by FrankStallone on May 20, 2011 1:53 PM CDT up reply actions
$$$
The picking are a bit slimmer than last summer. A quality veteran goalie, not over 35, would probably want A) closer to $2M and/or B) to go someplace he has a good chance of being the starter. The Hawks can’t offer either option.
There’s no guaranty that Salak is going to be the backup next year, but I assume that is the plan.
And the fact that both were tied up within 24 hours of each other says to me that the Hawks had a number in mind for what they wanted to pay for goaltending next year. Once they were able to get Salak to agree to a lower salary (for the guaranty that he would actually get paid the NHL figure), that likely freed up some extra money to pay Crawford what he wanted and not wait until July to fuck it up.
I highly doubt this was coincidence, and if not, then it was a GREAT move by the Hawks, considering the flip side of waiting for bad things to happen. Hawks need goalies as much as centers. Cross one major need off the to do list. Now to shore up the farm system.

so
was this the unofficial official boot out the door for turco?
wonder who is gonna pick him up. watched him on nhl network doing some commentating, and it he looked unnatural and goofy. not sure if he can hack it there.
I hope to God it is. I’ve had enough of Turco for one season.
Salak appears to have “the goods” as a quality netminder. I guess we’ll see in September in the pre-season and, if all goes well, beyond.
Proud fan of the 2010 Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks and the 2010 Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers.

i would take turco for salaks price as a back up
vet and not a terrible back up. The team in front was terrible but i like how he seemed with crawford and good interview (not that it matters)
I will give the devil his due and that he served as a wonderful mentor to Corey Crawford this past season. No doubt a small part of the Crow’s success hinged on Turco’s ability to teach him the mental aspect of being a legitimate top flight netminder.
But this upcoming season I’d rather see a goaltender that can battle Crawford for ice-time rather than a veteran that can spot a start or two.
Proud fan of the 2010 Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks and the 2010 Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers.
"You cannot dream yourself into a character; you must hammer and forge yourself into one."
I completely agree with that assessment
battling for ice time and pushing Crawford to get better is definitely something that having a good, young goalie like Salak backing him up will do. I think it should serve to help Crow stave off a sophomore slump

Yeah, but he'll never be better than Milbury
Think about his competition – if he can talk without dribbling over himself, he’s golden. Another plus – not stating what’s blatantly obvious to a three – year old. Yet another plus – refrain from saying “it’s OUR game” to any proposed rule changes, or refraining from overusage of “that’s just rink hockey…”
Did you just say that somebody WON'T be better tha Milbury?
A mentally handicapped child with a lisp is better than Milbury…
by FrankStallone on May 20, 2011 3:54 PM CDT up reply actions
It was blatant sarcasm
Note the references to moronic Milbury opinions, which are expressed roughly 1 – 3 times during each game intermission.
Good move with Salak
But I’m kinda hoping the ‘hawks pick-up this guy, and start Salak in the minors. He’s a UFA out of the Preds system. He’s had solid numbers in the AHL for a few years, and the Preds are unlikely to give him his shot with Lindback and Rinne already on the team. Plus, you know, Predators goalies have this thing.
Depends if management is willing to pay $600k to have Salak play in Rockford.
I had heard that the Preds org really wanted to hold on to him
but who wouldn’t? I assume he wants his chance in the NHL. He’s definitely high on the prospect charts.

They really are a breed apart when compared to other sports – I still remember the story where some of the Caps players stopped at the side of the road late one night while heading home to help a woman who had a flat tire. Just got out of their expensive cars and chipped in – and the kicker was that this was after the final playoff game where they lost to another low – ranked opponent in the 1st round.
Yes, Brooks Laich (love to see him in our sweater next season) stopped after they were
