2010-2011 Player Evaluations: Michael Frolik

Frolik was certainly not a name we had heard that was a possibility as an acquisition. He didn't seem to fit the criteria of what the Hawks said they were looking for. He wasn't big, he's wasn't known to be physical, and he wasn't a center. Then they said he was a center. Then he said he wasn't. Then they played him at center. Then that didn't work. Then he moved back to wing. That kind of worked. Then Dave Bolland showed up. That really worked. But it was only for four games. So do we have any idea what we have here? Kinda. Maybe. What we do know, we think, maybe, is that we should find out more. So that there can be no doubt. Maybe.

Well, if nothing else he certainly adds to The Handsome Brigade on the Hawks.

Contract Status: Restricted Free-Agent, not arbitration eligible, requiring a qualifying offer of 803K

Positives: A few, to be sure. Frolik was never short on confidence (also a problem), and displayed a pretty nifty pair of hands. Good skater as well, and his hockey IQ, at least in the defensive area, was pretty above standard as well. Never shrunk from the scene in the playoffs, even as he was getting ragdolled left and right by the Canucks defense. The chemistry he immediately struck up with Dave Bolland has a lot of us pretty excited, but we'll try and keep in mind it was only four games. Even if they start next year together, how long before Q breaks them up?

Negatives: Well, it didn't help that for a majority of his time here so far he's been bounced all over the lineup, at both wing positions and at center -- which he isn't cut out for at this point in his career. But Fro also had some warts. His season-long scoring drought (part of which can be attributed to just the bad luck of his shooting % dropping from 10% his first two years in Florida down to 4% this year) clearly caused him to press, as he could be counted on to shoot from anywhere at anytime, often weakly, sending his percentage even more down the toilet. Couldn't win a draw, and sometimes was just physically over-matched in the middle. And oh yeah, the repeated times he went "Splat" after a hit.

Defining Moment: Only one contender here:

Outlook: It's pretty simple, you don't really give up on 23-year old forwards who already have two 20-goal seasons to their name. And unless his contract demands get utterly silly, it's unlikely the Hawks will. Again, we only have the smallest of sample sizes, but Frolik looks like he could find a real home on a 3rd line the way the Hawks like to have a 3rd line: defensively responsible but able to threaten as well. It's where Martin Havlat and Kris Versteeg found homes the previous two seasons. That's not to say Frolik has that type of game, he could just ply his game from that role. And as long as he's kept at a wing, only filling in at center in an injury crisis, I think we'll see Frolik really produce.

Grade: B-. The expectations were that he would be better than Jack Skille, and he was. The more hopeful of us thought he could be a real weapon when he got to a winning team, but that never really materialized. Only three goals in 28 games, and a further two in the playoffs, that's not enough. Whether he was snakebit, or pressing, or reverting to true form, we'll have to find out next year. But it's my sincere hope that we'll find out while he's still wearing our colors.

Fair grade

Really impossible to properly evaluate him based on all the fluctuations regarding his lines, positions, etc. – but they cannot give up on the kid at this point, too much talent at puck possession and all the other traits that management emphasizes.

so

is there any reason to offer him more than $803?

at this price, looks like a no-brainer.

Not much reason, since he's not arbitration elibigle

unless the Hawks can lock him for a few years at a friendly cap hit in the $1.3M range.

Yes he's not arbitration elligible, but on the other hand

He’s not REQUIRED to sign. If he feels that he’s worth more and that another team might offer him significantly more, there’s no stopping him from not signing and waiting to see if he gets any offer sheets

by FrankStallone on May 23, 2011 11:49 AM CDT up reply actions

Yes, I understand free agency

but unless Doug Wilson is going to throw him a big contract and give us draft picks in return, then the likelihood is small that he’s not re-signed if the Hawks want him back.

Hawks would match anything under $1M. Over $1M is gonna cost to give him a QO:
$1 mil – $ 2 mil = 2nd rounder
$2 mil – $ 3 mil = 1st & 3rd rounder

Your compensation is a little off

It’s more like 1.5 -2.4 = 2nd rounder
and
2.5-3.5= 1st and 3rd

I’m not trying to cause a civic panic but I’ve seen on Copper and Blue that they’re advocating signing Frolik to a 4 year, $8.something and only give up a 2nd rounder and essentially force the Hawks hand.

So while it is to the Hawks advantage he isn’t arbitration eligible, he’s still an interesting player who would garner some interest if the Hawks screw around again.

so here's a question

what’s the most the Hawks would pay to keep Frolik?

If he gets a 4-year $8 mildo offer, sayanora. Didn’t his production take a worrying and fairly dramatic turn for the worse this season?

Even if there is a risk of an offer, I don’t see the logic in offering much more than the minimum QO upfront.

by cliffkoroll on May 23, 2011 2:33 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree

$2 million a season for 4 years is too much, he hasn’t earned that much of a raise and the ‘Hawks don’t have the abundance of cap space that would allow them to be so frivolous. However, something like $4 million over 3 years would be both appropriate and affordable IMO

by FrankStallone on May 23, 2011 2:45 PM CDT up reply actions

answer

The Hawks’ limit on Frolik’s salary is the amount equal to his perceived worth.

by K_Dog on May 23, 2011 3:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Well that was kind of my point

if they’re hell bent on squeezing every penny out of the negotiation because he doesn’t have arbitration rights, then they run the risk of getting burned by a difference of couple k.

I’d imagine he’d sign a $1-1.3 million deal with the Hawks. However, if they don’t want to budge past the 803k and someone swoops in with $2.4, then all of a sudden, they have to pay an extra million and a half for him or try and find a replacement which won’t be very easy at his price tag.

I'm operating under the assumption that whatever agreement the Hawks and Frolik come to

is of the short-term variety. Whether it’s one, two, or three seasons.

If they let him out of their exclusive negotiation window, that’s the only way he’d score a long-term deal (however unlikely that may be).

I may be overrating Frolik a bit, but I feel the ’Hawks may have to go to a 3-year escalating contract that starts at around $1.6m to $2m to $2.4m.

I know a $2m cap hit may be too much for some of you to swallow, but given his production increase when Bolland was healthy leads me to believe that if Bolland remains healthy this season we could see a career year out of Frolik which could lead to even a bigger match of a contract offer next season if he should only sign a $803K @ 1 year.

Proud fan of the 2010 Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks and the 2010 Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers.

by hawks61 on May 23, 2011 7:56 PM CDT up reply actions

I think 2m is too high.

Unless!

If it is part of Their Plan to move a larger contract player – i.e., Hammer, Hossa, Sharp, Bolland (these are the only 4 making >1.4 million/year, without a NMC of some kind in their contract, and not seabrook).

If they move a larger contract out, they may want to see frolik as part of the top 6 for the future, add a center, and create a more even distribution of money around the roster. Not entirely unwise, in my opinion.

by krome on May 24, 2011 8:29 AM CDT up reply actions

That's what I was trying to get at, too

If the ‘Hawks were to offer him something along the lines of what I suggested above – $4 million over 3 years, which is a $1.33 million annual cap hit – then everybody wins. Frolik gets a slight raise, the ’Hawks have him locked up for 3 years, and it’s not an exorbitant cap hit that would handcuff the ‘Hawks or prevent them from trying to address 1 or 2 other positions (i.e. 2nd line center, stay-at-home d-man) on the UFA market. If, on the other hand, the ’Hawks lowball it and only offer him the $803K QO there’s no real incentive for him to sign because he knows he’s worth more than that. There’d by nothing at all to stop another team with plenty of cap space, like say Toronto, from swooping in and offering him $2.5 million knowing that they’d only have to surrender a 2nd round draft pick at that salary level if the ‘Hawks don’t match. At that point the ’Hawks would have to choose to either match, forcing them to overpay for his services and preventing the team from being as active on the UFA market, or let him walk and have to fill another hole.

by FrankStallone on May 23, 2011 4:15 PM CDT up reply actions

please bear with me

maybe i don’t understand the timing or length of contract issues, but supposing the Hakws offer Frolik 3 years for $4million total.

Couldn’t Toronto still offer him $2.5 million for one year in this case?

i’m pretty sure i’m missing something, just not sure what.

We like our people!

by cliffkoroll on May 23, 2011 4:19 PM CDT up reply actions

They could, yes

But I think the point he’s trying to make is that the Hawks offer something reasonable first, he’s more than likely to sign it before Toronto even has the chance to make the aforementioned hypothetical offer.

thank you

sounds like a timing issue! i suspected something like this.

for my edification, must Frolik give a thumbs up/down to the QO before testing the waters?

If I’m Froik, I wouldn’t be in a hurry to sign anything Stan puts in front of me without understanding my market value. Would this be considered “bad form” if the QO was “reasonable”, and not the money-grubbing $803?

I’m not out to screw Frolik, but I am a bit hesitant based on his drop-off this season, and God knows, the Hawks can use the cap dollars.

I’d like to sign him for $803- if he has a good first half, maybe an extension at a higher salary can be worked out. But if this means a greater risk of losing him compared with a $1.2 per year offer upfront, bite the bullet Stan.

We like our people!

by cliffkoroll on May 23, 2011 4:39 PM CDT up reply actions

No

Restricted free agency is a bit like indentured servitude from the players’ standpoint. All the team has to do is file the QO with the league for them to be due compensation from a competing offer sheet. If Frolik gets an offer sheet, as we saw last year, the Hawks would have a week to match.

If no offer sheet comes, and he doesn’t like what the Hawks are offering, then he pretty much just has to sit and pout (Bobby Ryan, James Neal), and has to sign somewhere by Dec 1 if he wants to play at all that season.

by ahnfire on May 23, 2011 4:34 PM CDT up reply actions

thanks for all the help here

so it goes like this:

1. Hawks make QO now.

2. Frolik can accept before June 1. If the Hawks go $803, he probably doesn’t accpet. But there is a magic number (I dunno- $1.1? this is Stan’s job anyway) where he’s likely to think: “well, I probably can’t do better than this”, so he signs.

3. If he doesn’t sign by June 1 and the Hawks want to keep him, they have to pay market value.

I think I get it. A bit tricky, but I think I understand the lowball risk now.

We like our people!

by cliffkoroll on May 23, 2011 4:44 PM CDT up reply actions

so if i do understand this now

the Hawks, by being “fair” upfront, can pre-empt the uncertainty.

of course the uncertainty cuts both ways- until June 1, neither the Hawks nor Frolik know what offers, if any, might come rolling in.

So the Hakws make a decent offer, including reminders of the joys of playing in a town like Miami (or with the great fans but dysfunctional organizaton in Edmonton), and avoid the risk of an offer sheet. For Frolik’s part, he may settle for a bit less than what he thinks the uncertain market and uncertain destination may hold.

is this the gist?

I know

I was just trying to point out that, while he can’t demand more than his $803K QO because he’s not arbitration eligible, there’s nothing to force him to sign for that amount if he thinks he has a chance to be offered more from another team. I agree with you that no team is going to give him anything exorbitant because the draft pick compensation is directly tied to the salary of the offer sheet, but the numbers you’ve listed are pretty far off of what I’ve seen. These were the numbers for last year:

Below $994,433………………………….no compensation
$994,434 – $1,506,706……………….3rd round pick
$1,506,707 – $3,013,434…………….2nd round pick
$3,013,435 – $4,520,150…………….1st and 3rd round picks
$4,520,151 – $6,026,867…………….1st, 2nd, & 3rd round picks
$6,026,868 – $7,533,584…………….Two 1sts, a 2nd, and a 3rd round pick
Above $7,533,584……………………….Four 1st round picks

The numbers for this year should be about the same, a little higher even because they move as the average salary moves according to the CBA. So the point is that a team could sign him to an offer sheet for as much as $1.5 million and only have to give up a 3rd round pick of the ‘Hawks down match, and they’d have to offer him over $3 million a year to get into the range where they’d have to compensate the ‘Hawks with a 1st rounder. So what it boils down to is that it wouldn’t be unreasonable for Frolik to think that there’s a team willing to offer him close to the $1.5 million range and thus might hold out for that, so the best bet would be to try to lock him up for a couple of years at about the rate you suggested if possible because there’s no real incentive for him to sign at his minimum QO

His eyebrows make him a must sign

FWIW, I thought he showed a willingness to pay a price and go at the net. Improving shot selection is an obvious must. But I liked him and he showed a chemistry with Bickell and Bolland.

I’d put him as my #1 priority slightly over Campoli and Brouwer and much further ahead than Kopy.

Detroit Red Wings - Green Bay Packers - Minnesota Twins : Axis of Evil

by HjammerTime on May 23, 2011 11:26 AM CDT reply actions

I really can't see how Kopecky stays

unless he takes a slight pay cut or no raise. Eager was making $965K on the 4th line. Kop was making $1.2M there. If he re-signs for something in between, I’d be happy to see him back.

Hawks have the breathing room to recreate a roster similar to 2010 where they can pay to have a solid 4th line. With Bickell signed at $542k for 2 more years and Frolik likely to be re-sign for cheap, the don’t have the multi-million dollar contracts on the 3rd line they got stuck with after the “Mail-gate” fiasco of summer 2009.

I know a lot of people don’t feel the Hawks were that strong this past year, but they had the 2nd best cumulative score-tied team Corsi behind Vancouver (barely) which is one of the best indicator’s of team strength.

The difference was back-up goaltending and the PK. Even with depth issues, the Hawks put up big numbers.

The Hawks probably have taken care of the goaltending issue if Crow can repeat next season. All they need to do is improve the PK and that should be easy to do on the cheap. If the Hawks can fix the 2nd line, next year’s team has the ability to be as good or better than 2010’s team.

The Hawks lost about 20 one goal games last year… they were rarely blown out, yet did their fair share of blowing out other teams. I think we can expect the Hawks to be better next year just because of luck/regression to the mean.

I have to agree with your analysis/statements here...

But I don’t think Kop will take a pay cut. Not because he’s God’s gift to hockey or anything, but stats-wise, he is far and away coming off of his best year as an NHL level pro.

I love the guy, and I love what he brings to the team in many of the intangible sort of things. Do I think he can be replaced for cheaper? Probably so.

Do I want him to leave? Absolutely not. He’s done what has been asked of him (for the most part) above and beyond his ability level. They’ve given him top 6 minutes when he isn’t a top 6 kind of talent, and he’s performed at an acceptable level – based on my own eye test at least.

I do agree with your bottom line though. If we can get him at a reduced price, then he absolutely stays. Anything higher is requested, well… Hossa can play angry next season then.

(on an aside, I’ll beat up my father for an answer to the question that I asked him for you quite soon.)

by Powrfwd37 on May 23, 2011 1:08 PM CDT up reply actions

Yes, he had a career year

but his overall numbers in terms of things like Corsi rating, relative +/-, etc were all worst on the team.

Healthy Hossa, prior to re-injuring his shoulder, was on fire. Kop was a benefactor of that, although he did show some grit while on the 2nd line. I think he proved what I’ve been saying since two seasons ago: Kop could play the 2nd line on a shitty team, otherwise he’s a 3rd-4th line player.

I do think his experience on the 2nd line made him a much better 4th liner though. It’s like trying to hit a golf ball in fast pitch and then switching to a softball. He went from the 4th line schmuck to the 4th line leader (not that he had much competition).

I’m sure there’s a GM willing to pay him more based on his surface numbers, but not much more ($1.5M range?). So Kop can choose whether he wants to take a slight raise to play on what will likely be a non-contender, or choose to play for a team who should be one of the favorites next year.

Either way, I won’t lose any sleep – and neither will you. Hossa might.

(Thanks, I was about to email you about that.)

Like I said on the day of the trade, this could turn out to be one of the best Hawks trades in recent memory (Sharpy’s trade currently sitting atop that list).

Skille and two bags of pucks for Frolik and Salak? I mean come on here, gotta give Stan two thumbs up for this one. Not exactly what the Hawks needed at the time, but picking up talent is never a bad thing.

Hawks got a kid with almost 3 full years NHL experience who scored 20+ goals in his first 2 seasons plus had an awesome Sabermetric rating and a very good goalie prospect which was DESPERATELY needed since the Hawks had no one even close to being ready in their system.
They got that for Skille who has yet to prove anything, a career AHLer (Jessiman) and an average 18 yr old prospect (Pacan).
I still want to know what kind of dirt Bowman had on Talon.

Time will tell, but it would be nearly impossible to come out on the wrong side of this one.

I liked Frolik right when we got him.

I think he will shape up this season. It’s hard to get scoring when your already having an off year, and then add on top of that getting tossed onto a new team mid-season that has some playoff pressure on them and on top of that that, not having a position to really settle into. Tough.

Frolik reminds me of

A younger, smaller version of Hossa. Before y’all take shots at me now stating otherwise, please note his ability to take the puck into traffic, his handles and his 3 zone play every game.

by PatFoley on May 23, 2011 12:07 PM CDT reply actions

In that he's a solid two-way player, yes

but the biggest difference IMO is that Frolik doesn’t possess the ability to create his own space/shot like Hossa does (more so in the past than present) and I can’t see him being anywhere near Hossa-esque on special teams. He’ll never be a prolific scorer and 20-25 goals is a likely career range for him.

I agree

In that there is not much you don’t like about his game. I would like to see him develop a more consistent shot. But I think we should lock him up for a few years and laugh at what a great trade this was.

Now get ready for Salak behind the Thunderdome, wacking at any who dare trespass in front of his crease. Watching Thomas almost punch out a TB player who was definitely taking liberties during a goal mouth scramble, had to admit I miss that kind of Belfour attitude at times.

It's amazing how many of these grades are "small sample size" or "incomplete."

I didn’t realize just what a mish mash of personnel this team was for a good chunk of the season. The capocalypse plus injuries really did a number on us. Going through these evaluations player by player has shown the big picture to be a bit more complicated than simply Q playing Russian roulette with the roster each night. And it’s making me more than a little concerned with the team for next season. Do we really know what to expect out of group that we hardly know now?

Anyone but Vancouver.

2+ Yrs: Keith, Seabrook, Campbell, Hjalmarsson, (Hendry)
1st Yr: Scott, (Cullimore)
Mid-season call-up: Leddy
Trade deadine: Campoli

So basically 4 (or 5 if you include Leddy). And it’s not like Campoli or Frolik are rookies. They have at least a few years of NHL experience.
Really the only incompletes are Kruger and Smith, but they were basically Black Aces, so they should be.

Does this possibly raise Hjammer’s trade value as the market for D-Men heats up? You have to figure the price for Weber just went up.

If a team had Weber in their plans, Hjammer might be a nice fallback.

I was thinking that earlier today

with all the worry that someone is going to offer-sheet FroFro. Fucking Doug Wilson now has us terrified that every freaking team in the league is going to offer-sheet our players from under us.

I know I'll get laughed off the site for this...

But why on earth won’t they consider trading Lalonde or Olsen? They’re both of the puck-mover types, and clearly Leddy has surpassed them.

Hjammy is a different breed – and something the system does not have in abundance.

by transienthawk on May 23, 2011 9:43 PM CDT up reply actions

yeah we definitely need some good stay at home guys

all we’ve got are puck movers. Hjammer had an off year but I think he can bounce back.

Why would you be laughed off the site?

I think it’s a reasonable idea. I really hope that we keep Jelly and he has a monster 3rd year.

Otherwise, I hope he doesn’t do well with any other team.

A long term deal for Kopecky?

Sounds like Edmonton values the Kopacabana. Good for them as they continue to emulate the Florida Panthers.

Byng.

Sorry, had to correct that one.

I enjoy these BOS-TB games

so much more than those other ones. At least I don’t feel like killing myself or others during them

by girlphoenix on May 23, 2011 9:49 PM CDT reply actions

yeah. i so desperately want the canucks to lose in their series

that i get very ragey and intense. I can just enjoy the Bos-TB games.

haha

very much so. but should the unthinkable happen, I’ll go to NM & tell them congrats and give them a glass of my bitter bitter tears to cheer with. I’m sure they’ll enjoy that vintage. Just as we have enjoyed their bitter tears for the past couple years.

No, not at all.

I just think it was a weird choice for the team’s confidence.

he had a bad game last time, but was great the rest of the time. i’m assuming he’ll be back next game.

I watched a vid of that Clowe/Kesler punch from last night

Hilarious. Kesler laid there forever too! Someone made a gif of it. Too bad it doesn’t show Kesler lying on the ice and everyone ignoring him.

by girlphoenix on May 23, 2011 9:54 PM CDT up reply actions

would love to see that gif, but only if it had him laying there

just 1 player went to check on him. ridiculous.

Brian Rafalski

Rafalski to announce he’s retiring tomorrow. Injuries have apparently taken their toll. he had 4 goals and 44 assists in only 63 games last year, although he was apparently beconing more and more of a defensive liability.
