2010 - 2011 Player Evaluations: Tomas Kopecky
For the better part of the last two seasons, we've made a lot of jokes at Tomas Kopecky's expense. In our defense, they've pretty much all been justified. Whether it's his role as Marian Hossa's cabana boy, his inability to skate upright or keep his helmet on, or his odd skill set that has yet to find a home on any line, Kopecky has always led an existence as a Hawk as odd as his number. That certainly didn't change this season.
Contract Status: Unrestricted Free Agent (2010-2011 Cap Hit: $1.2 million)
Positives: First and foremost, TomoKop posted a career high in points by exactly doubling his previous best (shocking for a guy in a contract year, right?). Both Kopecky's goals and assists were career bests, and a lot of that had to do with playing with Marian Hossa early in the season, when Hossa was eviscerating the western conference in October. Kopecky was also one of the few Hawks who would consistently and effectively get his ass to the front of the net both at even strength and on the power play, utilizing his 6'3" frame. Kopecky also has a rocket of a wrist shot, but he needs about a year and a half to wind up for it. After a lull in production, Kopecky later returned to what he's done best throughout his career, slaying bums on the 4th line with Viktor Stalberg and Ryan Johnson, where he managed 5 points and was a +2 in the month of March.
Negatives: For all the versatility Kopecky is lauded as having by the Hawks' braintrust, the two aforementioned roles are really the only ones that he's been effective at, and any work he does in the top 6 has got an extremely short shelf life. This was exhibited by his production dropping off to only 11 points after the All Star Break. When pressed into duty at center, Kopecky was a miserable 42.2% at the dot, which exacerbated his defensive weaknesses, of which there are many. These include but are not limited to a lack of spatial awareness in his own zone, and deficient skating speed which forced him to reach and take penalties on the backcheck. Even for doubling his best scoring output, Kopecky was still a -13, which yielded far and away the worst Behind The Net rating on the team among the regulars.
Defining Moment: While I'd like to use this space to show Kopecky chugging along a step and a half behind the play on the back check as the opponent transitions, bent over at the waist and arm fully extended, those aren't exactly the things that NHL.com consumes valuable server hard drive space with. So instead here's a an ill-advised neutral ice pass from Kopecky that was picked off and deposited into an empty net by Ryane Clowe, a play that started with Kopecky losing (badly) a late-game draw that the Hawks had to have.
Outlook: While Kopecky does have two things that the Hawks sorely need - size and a willingness to get to the net, he's too much of a liability to be put into to the top 6 with any kind of consistency. Though, with putting up the numbers he did this year, some team in desperate need of help will over pay for his services, and cheaper alternatives can be found. So, unless he's willing to come back for around the same money just to bask in the glow of Marian Hossa's electric blond hair or if the market isn't what he anticipates due to the concussion in the playoffs, it's likely we've seen the last of TomoKop in an indian head sweater.
Final Grade: C-. Even with the offensive numbers seriously jumping up for Kopecky, he was a bigger defensive liability this season than he had ever been previously. And a lot of those offensive numbers carry a huge asterisk based on at what point in the season they came, and who Kopecky was playing with.

Pssst... they could be reading this.
Kopecky gets an A+++!! Best forward eva. Versitile. Hard working. He’s way too valuable here but we just can’t afford to keep him. *sniff, *tear.
Make us an offer. MK?
I agree with your analysis
Someone is going to overpay for him because of his career year points-wise and his 2 SC rings, and as long as that someone is not Stan Bowman I’ll be happy. I appreciate Kopecky’s attitude and energy, but if he’s wearing a ‘Hawks sweater in 2011-’12 I’ll be infuriated.
It will probably be the Ottawa Senators
But I hope not…

Fantasy
And he played a lot of Sunday nights where you could plug him in; potential PP pointsa and penalty minutes. A lot of time s it seemd like a temporary pick up for Sunday night in a close match was either Kop’s or someone on the Oilers.
If he stayed at his current price and Q promised to NEVER put him in the top 6
I’d be OK with him returning, he’s perfectly adept at slaying bums on the 4th line. However, Q won’t promise that and even if he would chances are that there’s some team out there willing to offer him $2 – $3 million just because of his career high 42 points and his 2 SC rings. That means that, if he’s back with the ‘Hawks, chances are that he’s making $2.5 million and probably playing alongside Hossa on the 2nd line which would be fucking awful

Love to have Tomas back, but under the condition that it’s 4th line ONLY. Like Hack mentioned yesterday, Kopecky has a knack for creeping back into the higher lines and the PP unit. Sneaky Slovak! I’m also concerned that if Kopecky goes, who are we going to make fun of? Simple Jack is gone already, and the Frolik eyebrow jokes will only last for so long…

Saw on the twitters this am that Stan has been talking to TOR about trades, and that Soupy’s name came up. Things that make you go ’hmmmm.
trading campbell is a concept I never really take seriously
due to all the hurdles of getting him out the door. That, added to what he brings to the team…
It would free up a lot of cap space, for restructuring, and maybe allow the team to bring in more size on D… but as always with Soupy rumors, I’ll believe it when i see it.

by HjammerTime on May 25, 2011 12:27 PM CDT up reply actions
My undwrstanding is that Soupy has a "list" of teams he would allow a trade to...
If Toronto is on that list, then I’ll eat my hat!
My Father's name is Jack, and my Mother's name is Daniels...
Actually, Campbell is from just outside London, Ontario
It’s only 100 miles from Toronto. He also has family in Toronto.
Aside from that, Toronto isn’t really that bad of a team. In 2010, they had the league’s 3rd best team Corsi rating, believe it or not. They’ve been victims though of having the league’s worst goaltending since the lockout.
This year, with Reimer in net, they showed what that team is capable of with decent netminding. He went 20-10-5. Their 2 other goalies, Giguere and Gustavsson, combined for a .895 Sv% and 17-24-6 record.
In 2006, their 3rd string goalie, Aubin, played 11 games and went 9-0-2 with a .924 Sv%. The next year he shit the bed. Other than that tease, the best Sv% of ANY goalie on Toronto since the lockout was Giguere last year with a whopping .907.
Outside of Reimer and those 11 games by Aubin, the Leafs have had 11 of their 15 goalies finish with a Sv% in the .800’s – and most of them were well into the .800’s. Could you imagine if this year’s Marty Turco was your BETTER goalie?
So, with Reimer looking like the real deal and in net next season, I wouldn’t put it past Campbell to have Toronto on his list. Actually, I’d expect it to be on his list.
/full disclosure: Toronto is my 2nd favorite team

To add
Toronto REALLY needs a puck-moving d-man and PP QB. Aside from Phaneuf, they have none since they sent Kaberle to Boston during the season. Although they’re not huge on the blue line, they have plenty of hitting and blocking d-men. Hawks have also made it clear they want a big stay-at-home defender.
I’ve never giving ANY credence to past Campbell trade rumors, but this one does make sense for two teams who want to trade big contracts.

And add to that addition
that the Hawks might really be looking for a way to keep Leddy in the bigs. Trading Campbell is the only way it makes sense IMO. Otherwise, you likely have Leddy stuck on the 3rd line for most of his career life afterlife. And that makes no sense whatsoever.

Should've made a FanPost...
Komisarek’s cap hit is $4.5M. He’s already been paid the biggest chunk of his contract. Next year he makes $5.5M, but after that he’s only due $3.5M for the final two years.
Campbell’s cap hit is $7.15M. He’s due that amount every year since his contract wasn’t front-loaded. He also has two extra years on his contract. That’s a savings of $23.25M for the Hawks. That’s not chump change for a team trying to recoup $11.25M lost by burying Huet in Europe.
Hawks also have Olsen who should be ready in 2-3 years. If they wanted to trade Komisarek after next season or later, it would be quite easy to do to a team with some cap space. Although the cap hit would be $4.5M, they’d only have to pay him $3.5M for a year or two.
Maybe hold off on getting that new Campbell jersey?

AND a 2nd line center, AND a PF, AND to keep Hammer, this is how it’s probably done.
I love me some Campbell, but if the Hawks can manage to keep Sharp and Hammer, pick up a big physical defensiveman, and loosen the cap noose around the team’s neck, then this makes a lot of sense to me.

I'd be really surprised
but if there’s one GM that I could see being willing to take on the massive cap hit and length of Soupy’s contract it’s Brian Burke. Add in the facts that the Leafs jettisoned both Kaberle and Beauchemin this year and are hurting for D, have a TON of cap space, and are probably only a few pieces away from making the playoffs and I could see it as a possibility
by FrankStallone on May 25, 2011 12:29 PM CDT up reply actions
As far as the Campbell to TOR rumors
I saw those too, but only in a Campbell for Kessel swap with maybe a few other pieces throw in.
If that’s the case, the Hawks would look worse than Nemo did on that OT goal last night.
by DontTazeMeBro on May 25, 2011 12:27 PM CDT up reply actions
But if the 'Hawks did make that trade
They could then turn around and trade Kessel elsewhere for either a stay-at-home defenseman, a true 2nd line center, or a solid power forward. I can’t see (or at least I don’t want to believe) the ’Hawks actually holding onto Kessel if they made that trade
by FrankStallone on May 25, 2011 12:31 PM CDT up reply actions
I would hope so
But imagine if they were stuck with him and his $5.4 million cap hit for the next 3 years. I agree that with Leddy’s progression into a Campbell-type player, freeing up that money could net us a 2nd line center, PF (or at least guarantee we resign Brouwer) and a stay-at-home D man. However, I don’t know if I want to take that chance.

I guess maybe we couldn’t trade Kessel after all.

How about this though
Colorado has shown a willingness / propensity to make boneheaded trades (see: their trade w/ the Blues) and as a result there are grumblings that Paul Stastny wants out. What if the ‘Hawks and the Leafs swapped Soupy for Kessel, and then the ’Hawks managed to turn around and convince Colorado to take Kessel for Stastny? Everybody wins – Burke gets his defenseman, Colorado trades a disgruntled star for one that’s not disgruntled yet, and the ‘Hawks get a legitimate top-6 center for the 2nd line while at the same time lowering the total team salary / cap hit by a little over half a million (Stastny’s contract is for $6.6 mil as compared to Soupy’s just north of $7.1 mil)
by FrankStallone on May 25, 2011 12:46 PM CDT up reply actions
what?
Toronto is always looking for good top 6 centers. If Burke could trade Kessel for a good stay at home Dman and a 2nd line center, he’d do that and skip the 7.1 million dollar middle man.
While I like campbell, a campbell kessel trade would be a bad contract for bad contract swap. Kessel would then be playing alongside Hossa and a 2nd line center (sharp or whoever). The only reason the hawks would take kessel is because he has 3 years left, while campbell still has 5.

Its the same old crap
people suggest trades with no knowledge of contract details – Soupy, Keith, Kane, and Toews all have NMC or NTC. Trading them would be silly anyway, but is rendered all-but-impossible by their contract clauses.
I’ve posted it before, but I’ll do it here again, the following is a list of players making greater than 1.5 m/yr, who were not signed in the past season, and do not have a NTC or NMC:
Sharp (3.9, 2012)
Bolland (3.375, 2014)
Hossa (5.275, 2021)
Hjalmarsson (3.5, 2014)
I’d be quite surprised if a large-dollar player who is not on this list gets moved this off-season.
Also shocked if bolland goes anywhere, and equally amazed by a Sharp departure.
Hossa’s contract is huge. I think he should be gone, if we can move him, but find it unlikely.
Thus, if the cap doesn’t go up as much as we hope, Hjammer is trade bait.
I don't know why this is getting this much discussion
This only came about because Jesse doesn’t have enough common sense to not feed the trolls in his mailbag. I’ll go ahead and continue to believe that a) Campbell isn’t going anywhere, and b) Jesse is an irredeemable moron.

I thought I saw it first from HockeyBreak on twitter
That thing
He goes on to mention potential Mike Komisarek involvement.
both soupy and komisarek have NMC of some kind
saves 2.6 million or so off the cap, goes from this:
5-22-27/+28 in 65 GP, 28 hits, 101 blocks (22:58 ATOI)
for
1-9-10/-8 in 75 GP, 186 hits, 121 blocks (13:37 ATOI)
On Toronto, not a single defenseman who played over 20 games has a + ratio, but even with that said, he was 7th of 8 D-men (over 20 games), ahead of Lebda (-14) and behind Schenn (-7)
I can see the logic in moving campbell, but that seems like a huge dropoff in defensive effectiveness for only a 2.7m/yr salary cap gain. If we’re going to move such a key cog, can we get something better back?
For comparison, Hjalmarsson’s stats:
3-7-10/+13 in 80 GP 46 hits, 166 blocks (18:28 ATOI)
Hammer is a million/year cheaper than komisarek, also 6 years younger (and 40 pounds lighter). Can we not get rid of Hammer… please.
side note
Komisarek and Campbell have identical qualcomps this season (-0.023).
Reason why Toronto probably wants to shed Komisarek's contract
I wouldn’t hold Komi’s -8 against him. Aside from the fact all of their d-men were minuses, he had by far the most defensive zone starts (nearly 60%) which probably accounts for him being negative.
But since his new contract – and even before his should injury in 2010, Komi’s production in his two main areas, hitting and blocking shots, has dropped off considerably:

Not saying I wouldn’t want a guy like him on my team, but he is overpaid probably just as much as Campbell.

Not saying I wouldn’t want a guy like him on my team, but he is overpaid probably just as much as Campbell.
Nope. Just stating “Reason why Toronto probably wants to shed Komisarek’s contract.” It’s in the title in case you missed it.
They already have Schenn who is only 21 and was making $3M. He’s an RFA and will be looking to get paid. Toronto only needs a guy like Campbell to have a pretty good defense.
If Komisarek can give the Hawks about 4.5 hits + blocks per game as a 2nd line defensemen, plus time on the PK (which Soupy didn’t until he was forced to this season), he’s a good pickup.
Soupy also hasn’t gotten time on the 1st PP unit. With Seabs emerging in that area, Duncs already being used there, and Leddy likely being groomed to take on the 2nd PP unit role, Campbell is expendable in that regard. So now you have a $7M player who isn’t playing special teams on a team that badly needs PK help, not PP help.
And just because I don’t brazenly make BOLD ABSOLUTE statements, doesn’t mean I’m waffling. It would be nice if you could keep your obvious infatuation in check.

i suppose to make this in any way realistic
I’d bump dubinsky up to 2.5 and retain campoli, and put goc on the 4th line for around 800k and keep a 21 instead of 22 man roster.

I think McClure had it yesterday
Showing we basically had 4m or so cap space to play around with acquiring centers. With your roster specifically, I’d rather pay the 300k or so to retain campoli (if he wants to be here) than have leddy up with the club. I’d also rather have kruger be in the AHL and bring in someone else for the same price.
I think stalberg and frolik will both cost more than what you have as well.
Also, rumor has the cap 1.5 M higher than what you have there (I think)
Meh
I think he’s in the ballpark for Stalberg and Frolik.

If Viktor Stalberg costs $1.2 mill
I’d just as soon as let him walk. No way he’s worth any more than a million. As been mentioned ad nauseum in these parts, Frolik is not arbitration-eligible. He can’t command more than the $1.3-1.5.
FifthFeather.com
by El Duque's Raft on May 25, 2011 1:37 PM CDT up reply actions
Frolik can't command anything
that’s true since he’s not arbitration eligible, but if the ‘Hawks offer him less than he thinks he’s worth there’s nothing to stop him from holding out and seeing if anyone wants to give him more on an offer sheet. That being said, I think if the ‘Hawks were to offer him something like $4 million over 3 years (that’s $1.5 million per) it would be a solid deal both for him and for the team
by FrankStallone on May 25, 2011 1:41 PM CDT up reply actions
It's reported that the cap should be somewhere between $60.5 million and $63.5 million
so it could be as much as $1.5 million more than what he’s got up there but it could as be as much as $1.5 million less
by FrankStallone on May 25, 2011 1:37 PM CDT up reply actions
given the reported revenue figures, many are predicting it comes out toward the higher end or that range
Confusion will be my epitaph.
The Cup is ours until someone takes it from us.
It needs more cowbell.
I completely agree
League revenues were up a reported $200 million this year as compared to last season, which works out to $6.67 million per team. That doesn’t even take into account the new TV deal because it doesn’t actually go into effect until next season. So yeah, logically one would assume that the salary cap would end up closer to the higher end of that window than the lower end, but there’s no way to know for sure and of course we can’t simply give the league the benefit of the doubt that they’ll follow basic logic. The point is that the $62 million figure that was used for that line-up is probably the best approximation to go with for now just because it’s right in the middle of the window.
by FrankStallone on May 25, 2011 2:36 PM CDT up reply actions
it isn't really a league deciding to follow logic
the CBA has some standards for how it works, in large part revenue driven.
Confusion will be my epitaph.
The Cup is ours until someone takes it from us.
It needs more cowbell.
I know that it's tied in large part to revenue
but I’m pretty sure that the league has some amount of discretion as well. Or I could be dead wrong. Either or.
by FrankStallone on May 25, 2011 3:34 PM CDT up reply actions
from what i see in the roster
if we assume a #2 center is the biggest acquisition priority of the offseason, the cap level pretty much dictates whether or not someone needs to be moved out to make space for that player. 63.5 gives us a little under 4m or so (as mcclure had yesterday). 60.5 means we have basically no space, and someone might be gone.
basically a waiting game, as it often is, for a while.
i get the impression campoli wants to stay here
but i guess you never really know what else is going on.

For most players it comes down to the cash at the very end
You get a guy like Sopel who is a veteran, has made his money and has a family to consider, than you are likely to get a big discount. Campoli may have incentive to stay, however if someone is offering the bucks than he is most likely going to take it. That is what most of us would do if were were in his position.
I really don't want to see him back next year
If he would play for cheap and stay on the third or fourth line than maybe, but I just don’t see this happening.

Kopecky is controlled by the spirit of Boynton
And he proves that Q has partiality toward undeserving players and defensive liabilities. Hell, Cullimore was heads above Boynton defensively and he got sent down while Bonehead cost us games. Kopecky was the same deal, getting top 6 minutes while Brouwer goes to the 4th line. Something might have even clicked with Stalberg had he had a steady place. Kopecky is a lemming on skates. Not the liability we need going into next season.

I think RJ17
Might give him a run for most time on the ice. That’s like his face-off shtick. He basically falls on top of the other guy. Effective.
Re: Kopecky. I think I’m a little hard on Kop. I think he was put in situations that he should not have been put in. That’s not his fault. He is who he is. That’s Q’s fault for putting him there. A second line center? Kopecky??? srsly? He’s a much better player on the 4th, playing with an edge trying to show that he doesn’t actually belong on the 4th.
He’s got a lot of heart and he wants to win… short of brining him back knowing he’s a terrific 4th liner and that’s where he’ll play, I have to pass.
