2010-2011 Player Evaluations: Jordan Hendry
Probably the definition of an incomplete. Through criminal under-use, and then injury, we didn't see much of Jordan. When we did it floated between teeth-grinding and the steady play we saw a couple years ago. But there just wasn't a whole lot of either, because we had to have Nick Boynton or John Scott out there. Jordan will never be anything more than "a guy". But I wonder about some of those points that were tossed away early in the year because of Boynton (Black Wednesday against the Sharks springing readily to mind), wouldn't have just one of them been gained with the non-spiking EKG of Hendry's play? Yeah, probably straws we can't grab. Anyway...
Contract Status: UFA
Positives: Uh, he tried hard? Hendry saw far too many games at forward, which is hardly his fault, and when he did he wouldn't threaten five or six minutes a game. But he skated as hard as he could and did what he could, which wasn't much at a position he had no business being deployed at anyway. Even managed a goal, which I wouldn't have had in the pool. When Coach Q finally tired of Boynton's act, Hendry got the third pairing minutes we had all been screaming out for. While it will never, ever be confused with spectacular, after a few games Hendry once again showed a pretty simple game and stopped trying to do too much to keep his place in the lineup. Certainly didn't murder anyone as a 6th d-man.
Negatives: Mostly out of his control. First, there's the pretty awful knee injury that he suffered that forced Nick Leddy into the lineup every game and the panicked acquisition of Chris Campoli (which worked out for the most part but I think we're all pretty sure that Campoli was not Target #1). Secondly, his frequent business meetings in the pressbox during games, again not really in his control. When he did get a run out, was trying to prove his worth in the areas he shouldn't have been -- being too aggressive on the rush or trying passes from his own end that he couldn't complete. Obviously didn't work at forward, but who thought it would?
Defining Moment: Not his so much but what it stated about the team and the way it was run, his goal in San Jose. There were the Hawks taking on a preeminent competitor and contender (or so we thought then) on the road, and going to battle with 10 forwards. But Hendry scrapped his way to a goal as the top end was shut out for another night. Isn't that how a lot of the season went?
Outlook: Sadly for Jordan, coming off a total knee blowout, his days here are probably over, as could his days in the NHL. It's hard to imagine he's going to garner much more than a try-out or two-way deal from anywhere, much less here. He's unrestricted but he won't get more than the 600K he did last year. I like Jordan, and still think he could be ok as a 7th d-man who fills in when injuries strike. Wouldn't you rather have seen him than John Scott when Seabrook went dizzy in the playoffs? But with Bowman almost certainly not going to admit a mistake and keeping Scott around for that seventh slot, and with upgrades coming hopefully, Hendry's probably squeezed out.
Grade: Incomplete. Just wasn't enough at his preferred position, and when he finally got a run he got hurt. All the best Jordan, but you've probably worn the Indian Head for the last time.

The guy has been a good soldier for the hawks. I’d like to see him as a #7, for sure.

I always liked Hendry.
May not have had uberskill, but he always worked his hardest. Plus I’ll always remember him for this goal:

Here’s hoping Stan swallows his pride, loans Scott to the Lithuanian C-league (where he belongs) and brings back Jordan for $600K. Jordan’s not a bad guy to have around as the 7th Dman/emergency Forward.

Anyway, re Campoli, saw that he had knee surgery for a torn meniscus. Expected full recovery in about 60 days.

Pisani, Scott, Hendry
On defense, I’d take the simple game that Hendry showed later in the year, a million times before 1 shift of Boynton, or 30 seconds of Scott. I like Hendry the defenseman, and wish him well.
As a forward, not so much. I put a dish on the front of my house about the same the Hawks put Pisani, Hendry, and Scott out on the ice as a 4th line. I remember it well.
The last couple years I’ve had Comcast Cable. And in Indianapolis, that means the Hawks are blacked out on CSN, even with Center Ice. So when they weren’t on nationally, I had to watch the games on a grainy, laggy, illiegal, boot legged internet feed. And I did. I don’t think I’ve missed more than a couple games in 3 years.
So just as the season was getting under way, I decided enough was enough. I was sick to death of watching the Hawks on my PC, and decided to get a satellite dish.
So Directv comes out, and puts the damn thing on the front of the house. My wife flipped out. There is a row of trees behind our house, and the dish has to be put at a certain angle in order to receive the full HD signal. So it was either get a dish and put it on the front of my house, or watch the games on my PC, illegally.
Well, needless to say, the dish stayed. Not long after, we got a letter from the HOA, and anyone getting a dish from now on has to have it approved first. fuckers.
So I remember these days vividly. I went through all kinds of shit so I could watch in HD, the Blackhawks put Boynton on defense, and Pisani, Hendry, and Scott on the 4th fucking line.
Good times.

Eerily similar to my thoughs on Hendry....
Just as the StanBo/Qstache trotted Hendry, Pisani, Boynton, and something called a “Scott” on the ice, I went through a pretty nasty breakup. Then-current-gf “needed” a fantastic condo we could barely afford on two incomes and a car that I bought for her. And a pup.
I find out she’s cheating. So, she gone… kicked out. And so was all my purchasing power, ergo bye-bye cable & internet package, bye-bye watching games at bars. But hey, now I have a nice place! And two cars! And a dog!
Luckily, my neighbors left their internet unlocked for me and I found myself watching crappy feeds of the Hawks, trying to discern if that is a #6 or a #28 losing the corner battles…. dreadful, really.
I remember being angrier about who the Hawks were throwing out on the ice and the horrible experience of watching internet feeds than my life’s predicament. Any psych majors out there? Transferrence, I believe?
So I suppose I just want to echo Skags and say that Hendry may actually be ok as a 7th man. And merely his presence allowed my brain to consider something other than a cheating ex, which is pretty cool of him. And I thank Hendry for that.

thanks for sharing man. Damn that was a good post. All of it hits just a little too close to home, minus the dog, house for a condo, car (check), kids…thank God she took them with…yep…that about covers it. Scott and Hendry are the two that make me want to know, "Who's REALLY in charge?"
We’ve all lamented/whined/raged over Bowman’s insistence on keeping/promoting Scott, but bring Hendry into the conversation and this is when I REALLY start to wonder. If the game roster is set by Q, then there was SOMEthing that made him think Hendry wasn’t adequate. And if it was Stan’s decision then what is it that he saw that made him think Boynton was the better choice? And what is the point of constantly moving guys into positions that they didn’t grow up playing?
So, who’s making these decisions? I realize that we’re “just” fans, and Q/Stan/Scotty are the hockey geniuses, but how can he/they not see what’s so blatantly obvious to the rest of us?
Perhaps, for all his supposed blunders with the salary cap and foolish contracts, Dale Tallon is a whole lot better hockey mind than most care to admit. Because, this season’s decision-making (WHOEVER is the one making them) has been questionable/confusing/atrocious/infuriating.

Tallon was a superb judge of young talent. He was not a good cap manager.

The Hawks were always run from the top down. (Anyone remember the GM (Pulford) joining Hartsburg on the bench?)
Or whoever the coach was. Anyway, I kind of thought that the system had changed when Rocky took over. Maybe it hasn’t. Maybe the GM still pulls the strings on his puppet coach.
I don’t know, but I’d sure like to find out.

This what I want to know.
Who sets the roster each night?
Who decides that scott laces up skates? who decides the X sits and Y plays?
Some of these decisions are suspect, and I want to know who is responsible.
I think it all comes down to McDonough regarding finances
Rocky has previously admitted that he got down on his knees and begged him to take the job, since McDonough was already financially well – off after his stint at Tribco, and didn’t appear particularly eager to take any job at the time. So Tallon takes the fall regardless of just who was ultimately in charge of the finances, but I strongly suspect that McDonough is the final authority on a lot of these decisions in the end. Rocky has a liquor business to run, and I really don’t understand just where Stanbow and his father stand in the organization at present.

They were all pretty close games.
Game 1 was 4-2 with an EN. Game 2 went to overtime. 3 was still one goal.

That’s like rooting for constipation. Give me Boston/San Jose. That would be one hell of a series. So would Boston/Van, but I’d rather not entertain the thought of Vancouver winning the cup.
