Our Day At Prospects Camp
Because Killion has recently joined me under the heading of "Having a totally awesome job that leaves my weekdays free for the most part", the two of us decided to jaunt on down to Johnny's today to catch the last day of Prospects Camp. There's always something odd about spending a steamy, July morning (calm down) heading into a heavily air-conditioned building to watch hockey. And not even a real game. Mostly it's a bunch of kids we won't ever hear from again trying to impress coaches we don't know while the real coach signs autographs in the stands as you're surrounded by some people you definitely head to the other side of the bar from (myself at the very top of the list). But whatever, better than doing nothing, right?
I'd love to sit here and try and sound like an expert and proclaim that some kid stood out over everyone else and will soon be cracking TJ Oshie's skull in the corners of the DrinkScotch Center. But I didn't see any of that. As you might expect, these events are a pretty disjointed affair as these kids have barely been together for a weekend and have only been doing drills together for the most part. Maybe that's why the Hawks had a couple of sets of brothers, as they might have a built-in rapport (though that didn't really work with the Hayes Bros. today). Anyway...
-Dylan Olsen was the most composed, but he should be. He's been in Rockford for a half-season. And he still took a pretty stiff right from Andrew Shaw. And I love fights in this setting, where the guys give each other a helmet-tap after they're done. If you have so much respect for each other, why are you punching each other? One of those hockey anti-logic things that we don't question and is pretty damn funny when you think about it. Also, Olsen needs a bit more speed, he got caught lagging a couple times.
-Joe Lavin also looks pretty smooth, but it seems to already be an awfully crowded blue line down at Rock Vegas with Olsen, Shawn Lalonde, Brian Connelly, and Ryan Stanton all requiring minutes and probably another veteran coming in to show the way.
-Jimmy Hayes is a very large boy, and not afraid to "try shit" with the puck. He's got some ways to go, but I imagine the Hawks are salivating about that size.
-Didn't notice Byron Froese at all.
-Philip Danault clearly has the brain, he was everywhere he was supposed to be. Looked pretty small though, will need to spend some time in the gym.
-Don't sit on a hot stove waiting for Mark McNeill to make his business address 1901 W. Madison.
-Maybe my scout's eye sucks, and it probably does, but the two guys I noticed the most were non-drafted invitees. I know, they have to be, as they have to work harder than everyone else to just get a mention. But both Killion and I enjoyed watching the diminutive Stevie Moses (and tell me that's not a great name to say, almost as good as Tobin Heath) skate his ass off today. He's generously listed at 5-9, which if true means McClure should have played college basketball at center. We'll probably never see him again or hear his name (and with that name that's a crying shame), but he capped off his camp with a nifty tip-in for a goal. He's got one year at UNH left where he's probably nothing more than a second or third liner, but I'll be following. The other player I took notice of was Terry Broadhurst, part of the Orland Park brothers. He's even worse off than Moses, as he's already 22 to Moses's 21. But a lot of plays seemed to start with him, and he showed an eye for a pass. It's hard to make anything of these kind of things, and everyone is in varying states of shape. But whatever, none of this matters for this season.
-Oh, and Stan Bowman talked. They're "hopeful" on Frolik and Campoli, which means they aren't all that close and will have to wait on the hearing for Camps and for Frolik's agent to to comeback from Planet Nutbar in negotiations, I'm guess. Olesz won't be bought out, and it sounds like Kruger is going to get every chance. I've actually become fine with this. If there's truly no option out there that Bowman likes -- and there may or may not be but at least he's learned to ot announce such things -- then it makes sense to try a kid he clearly believes in. The Hawks season will not capsize if Kruger starts on the 4th line or wherever or not, and if he doesn't work there's plenty of time and flexibility to find other solutions that weren't available in the summer.
And Rob Klinkhammer re-signed. So we can keep saying Klinkhammer.

Disappointed
Im disappointed we are not going after a 2C. I would trade Olesz, Stalberg, (insert any 3 line guy) and a few draft picks for someone like Dubs.
IMHO the only way SB does anthing now is if his new acquisitions don’t pan out.
(insert any 3 line guy)
Um, Bolland? Yeah, toss him in there.
Question: How will SB know if his his new acquisitions pan out before the season starts?

I wasn't refereing to Bolland. Davey is second line material!
And as for SB, I should have been more clear. I meant he’s going in with what he has now and he makes a move before the trade deadline if things aren’t working.
I’m just starting to follow the Hawks like a used to 20 years ago.
I think the Hawks would be Cup bound if they got Dubs or someone similar but I could be wrong. Just like my kids tell me everyday.

I've always wondered about the Hawks gear...
…these kids are all wearing the official pants and their gloves and helmets are all Hawks colors. Do they buy new kit for all incoming invitees and then let them abscond with it after camp is over? Seems like an awfully expensive proposition for the organization.
eh, considering im sure their stuff
isn’t costing 100$ a pop for them its rather cheap.
Im guessing they get their jerseys/equipment for slightly over cost if not at cost since its free advertising for the companies. Id assume reebok (they do the jerseys now days yeah?) are more worried about keeping the license/contract to sell these to the public more than they are worried about making profit on the teams.
And boy do they make profit on us...

I went to the Hawkquarters downtown store and they had a lot of the sweaters these guys wore in a big laundry bin for sale. They only had numbers, no names. Different colors to I suppose to represent position, etc. One could be had for about $40 if I’m not mistaken.
But that was before they won the Cup.

To be honest
He wasn’t super impressive, and in my eyes to make the opening night roster at 18 y/o you have to be super impressive in the prospect camp to just be noticed when you start playing with nhl players. Not to say he wasn’t good, he was, just not “oh wow” type of good.
by putmeinthemadhouse on Jul 11, 2011 7:38 PM CDT up reply actions
I am not really surprised, to be honest
I figured that McNeill would be headed back to the juniors to season his game. I thought that this be th case not only because of his age, but because I don’t think that he’s even ever faced the best possible junior competition in the WHL. WHL prospects never seem to be as strong as QMJHL or OHL prospects.
Am I paranoid? I don't know. I went to a therapist once, but I left before he gave me the diagnosis, cause he had it out for me.
by Detroit Must Die on Jul 11, 2011 7:57 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions
I think
It’s normally the QMJHL prospects that are considered to come from the weaker league. The WHL has the most draftees of any league in the world pretty much every season.
Yes, the QMJHL historically is the weaker of the three leagues
In the past 2 years, the QMJHL has caught up in the number of draft selections, but for the most part its OHL, WHL and then the QMJHL.

I'd say the talent level between O and the W are basically a wash.
With the Q slightly behind. The OHL is kind of ridiculous in the fact that a team can have a “6 game road-trip” and spend every night in their own bed (due to proximity between teams). Try that in the Dub with a Portland-to-Brandon trip (no planes either). In guess what I’m saying is that a lot of the western league players are a little more up to the rigors of the pro-hockey game having been used to excessive travel since the age of 16…
You are next.
The W
Is a more defensive league though. There’s about a 0.5 Goal/G differential on the teams in the W compared to the O
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
And the Q is less defensive still … where our Corey sharpened his skills, getting shelled night in night out.
www.mjt.org
The Q is known for producing some of the best goalies though
perhaps this is the reason?

The follow up comments about goal differential and goaltending...
… are good ones by Semi and Chiko (respectively). Without question, I would say the free-flowing style of the Q prepares goalies nicely. To piggy-back off of Semi’s comment a little bit – I think the defensive systems approach of the Dub, along with the travel rigors make a lot of their players “pro-ready” a little sooner. perhaps that’s why their draft record is where it is.
You are next.

100% agree
Despite the fact that, top-to-bottom, the western conference has been better and more competitive than the eastern conference for the last few seasons, NBC still likes to mostly ignore the fact that the western conference exists and instead broadcast games almost exclusively featuring eastern conference teams. If the Wings moved to the east it would only compound that idiocy even further.

Considering how much shit NBC would take for not broadcasting ANY WC games

NBC won't air games featuring Canadian teams
Canadian markets don’t count toward viewership numbers. They’ll air Hawks games against Eastern Conference teams.
Good point
the only way that any other WC teams would ever have a game broadcast on NBC would be a Sharks, Ducks, or Kings game versus either the ‘Hawks or an EC team on Saturday or Sunday afternoon so that the time difference between east and west coast won’t be as restrictive as it would for a regular night game
There are three types of people in this world: those who can count, and those who can't.
by FrankStallone on Jul 12, 2011 12:00 PM CDT up reply actions
I think
They might be airing 1 this year. The Van-Bos game in Boston this year is on a Sunday at 1EST, which is normal NBC time, right?
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
It's possible, but further analysis says not likely
There are a few things to keep in mind:
1) The currently-listed start times for the games are meaningless as while the dates won’t change the times certainly can. If 2 teams are scheduled to play on a Sunday afternoon or evening and NBC wants to make that game their national broadcast game the start time will be moved up. That decision, I believe, is made no more than a few weeks beforehand. The ’Hawks-Caps game this past season that was broadcast nationally on NBC was originally scheduled to start at 4PM EST before NBC bumped it up to noon.
2) NBC airs a game of the week on Sundays, not on Saturdays (which is when the Bruins-Canucks game is scheduled for), and those games are generally scheduled at either 12 or 12:30 EST. They occasionally also show games on Saturday afternoons, those games usually have start times of around 3PM
2) NBC doesn’t usually start doing those weekend afternoon national broadcasts until after the NFL season ends, the weekend of the Bruins-Canucks game is the same as the first weekend of the NFL playoffs. This makes it even LESS likely because during the playoffs the NFL plays on both Saturdays and Sundays and I doubt that NBC really wants to put hockey up against playoff football, especially considering that the Winter Classic – a much more marquee game – is being bumped to Monday the 2nd so that it doesn’t have to compete with the final Sunday of regular season NFL games.

divisions determined geographically but conferences that stretch coast to coast like the NFL or the MLB would, IMO, be ideal.

far more than the new way…
“Oh, I get it… Detroit, Columbus and Chicago are in the Western Conference with all the actual Western teams.”
They could have renamed the Conferences “Leagues” ala MLB, and it would have allowed the sport to keep the traditions and history.
Eastern/Western is just so generic, and when most Americans (that they were trying to attract) automatically put the East/West dividing line at the Mississippi River, our Conference alignment fails even further.
I don’t know why the teams would need to be divided into Eastern and Western in order for people to understand that there are two Conferences, which contain Divisions, which contain Teams that play hockey against each other.

I would be pretty pissed losing those to rivalries
talking about 2 teams i hate but love watching the hawks play. Come on, it’s bad enough I have to see CBJ 6x a year, now add minny and the jets
October 7th, can't get here soon enough...
Why would Minny think this would be a slam dunk for them?
Craig Leipold showed a bit of its hand on Tuesday on KFAN radio in Minneapolis. He said Minnesota’s division would include “the Winnipeg Jets, us, the Blues, the Nashville Predators, the Dallas Stars, Chicago Blackhawks and maybe the Columbus Blue Jackets — maybe not, depending on which way they would go, east or west. So that’s the only team that would probably be up in the air. I am all in favor for that. That is a grand slam, home run, hat trick for our team.”
Is it October yet?
The one way in which I see that as a "slam dunk" for Minnesota
is that Columbus is the only team listed there (and listed as a “maybe” at that) that is not in the central time zone, and all of the teams except arguably Dallas are a fair amount closer travel-wise for them than Vancouver, Calgary, or Edmonton

..not so sure this is a bad deal for Hawks
yeah I get the detoilet rivalry but let this old timers team go get bludgeoned by the more physical teams and come limping into the U nited Center for the playoffs. I think we underestimate the Hawks marquee value I think they’ve become a pretty good draw for TV and their players are very popular now. If Wash faulters again Ovies old news, Crosby may still have bats in his belfry or could have his bell rung again and be out for a good part of the season or rendered ineffecive ala Lindros. As I said deloilet is getting old and Zett & Datsyuk have been taking a beating. Boston is kinda vanilla. I think we have some of the most exciting YOUNG players in the league. Kaner, Toewes, Keith and Seabs. Throw in Sharp,Hossa and Crawford this is a very marketable team just off a championship. I think the league wants the Hawks to be a main attraction.
I think the NHL is trying to make sure..
the Hawks have a main seat in the playoffs . I think they sweated out, like we did, the thought of Hawks missing the dance and want to try and avoid that ever happening again. Too many marketable players on our roster . They need the Hawks in the mix
Are you sure
You aren’t a closet Canucks fan?
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
positive I'm not
all I’m saying is this could benefit the Hawks long term. Rivalries are nice but it doesnt win championships. I’ve spent my whole life enjoying the Hawks rivalries , now I want to watch championships. Most championships require some breaks or good bounces along the way. I think this is a good bounce for the Hawks as far as winning more cups and complaining about the loss of rivalries well just seems silly to me if this move helps the Hawks in the playoffs. Just my opinion
Yup, I was correct.

Radical Suggestion for Conferences
I’m fully aware that this will never be adapted, but here’s a thought – if the NHL is intent on continuing to define conferences geographically, why not do north and south instead of east and west? It could be separated like this:
North: ’Hawks, Wings, Bruins, Wild, Devils, Islanders, Rangers, Sabres, Senators, Canadiens, Maple Leafs, Flames, Jets, Cannots
South: Panthers, Lightning, Hurricanes, Caps, Pens, Flyers, Blues, Predators, Blue Jackets, Avalanche, Stars, Coyotes, Kings, Ducks, Sharks
It’s obviously not perfect – the fact that the Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and (to a lesser extent) Columbus would be in the “Southern” conferences is kinda silly, but as far as I can see it’s really the only way to have the conferences continue to be defined geographically while eliminated the unfair balance of overall travel between the conferences. Thoughts? (and yes, as I said above, I realize that this would never actually happen, I’m just daydreaming about a solution that doesn’t fuck up the ’Hawks-Wings rivalry)
There are three types of people in this world: those who can count, and those who can't.
Wouldn't this involve way too much traveling?
Isn’t that what they are trying to steer away from?
Is it October yet?
Yeah, the complaint is about a lot of traveling
but it’s rooted in the fact that teams in the eastern conference don’t have to travel anywhere near as much as western conference teams do over the course of an entire season. My suggestion would more or less even it out so that teams would travel about the same amount regardless of which conference they play in. Does it solve every problem? Not even close, but it does remove that striking disparity that I believe is really at the root of the problem.

you would regularly have teams from the pacific time zone playing on the east coast, making for early start times (or very late start times, depending on where the game is). I’m guessing that would lead to lower ratings

it's great being a New York based team

I really think that splitting up the New York teams into different divisions should be done.
No way, you can't do that

Speaking as a West Coast fan
I’m very grateful the current alignment allows me to see a good number of games during prime time in the Pacific Time Zone.
The Sharks spend pretty much all of February on a month-long road trip as the Shark Tank is hosting the Sybase Open. This means for huge chunks of the month, the Sharks are back east, and games start at 4:30 Pacific. With most people in Silicon Valley working until 5 or 6, this obviously makes catching games a bit challenging.
The NFL can get away with having conferences stretch the country because games are always on Sunday. I think the NHL needs to continue to foster as many games as possible in prime time and in the time zone.
The Sharks obviously don’t have it as bad as Dallas, who up till now had NO ONE in their time zone, but every little bit helps. There’s always a lot of “what ifs” when it comes to whether or not a team in a non-traditional market will survive, and I think, for the Sharks, one of the reasons they’ve enjoyed success is that the fans in the area CAN watch most of the 82 game regular season.
There’s obviously a ton of arguments for the differing schemes, and it’s hard to say which is more important, but I have to argue for a more geographic/time zone friendly alignment.
GO SHARKS!

Changing signatures is for suckers.
What Jay Leach is to the San Jose Shark's Defense, I am to Fear The Fin's Mod Squad.
I get your point, but the "more geographic/time zone friendly alignment"
based on the dynamics of the league as it exists are really only mostly friendly to the West Coast. It’s just a matter of geography in that case.
If a game starts on the West Coast at 7 pm, that game is starting at 9 Central and 10 Eastern. Almost completely not likely to allow most people in those zones to watch them, as a game that begins at 9 or 10 is not going to be over with before most people should be asleep so they can get up and go to work the next morning.
If a game starts at 7 pm Central time, it begins at 5 pm Pacific. Granted, that’s “drive home from work” time, but you can get home, watch the rest of the game, and still have plenty of time remaining that evening for other activities.
I too loved the scheduling of games for the most part, while I was living out in Seattle during the last season. It was awesome. now that i am back East again, I know that any games that are on television and being played on the West Coast will mean very late nights if I want to watch them.
Second City Hockey's resident arrogant poster.
As an aside,
I think this time zone issue is one of the reasons the West has a better record against the East. Because there are relatively fewer East Coast fans watching later-starting road games, the East coast team has less fan support over the airwaves or cable’s coaxial radio frequency and the team’s performance suffers accordingly.
I think McGill University did a study of this and determined that the problem has worsened as more games have moved from broadcast to cable. I would provide a link to the study but it was destroyed during a riot after an overtime Canadiens loss somewhere on the West Coast.

I don't think anyone
should be catered to. As an AZ resident, Pac time, I tend to miss the start of a lot of Hawks games cause I’m still at work. This causes me to not feel too much sympathy for folks having to stay up late when games are played out here in the actual west. Because I can choose to stay up late to watch a game, I can’t walk out of work (Uncle Sam’s big on duty hours) to make sure I don’t miss the beginning of a game.
Curator of Dark Side of the Five Hole

more than that
people who want to watch their team play can take a nap when they get home, get up, do some stuff with their families and then watch the game in it’s entirety, so they’re not out too many sleep hours. I’ve got a friend that goes into work super early in the morning and that’s what she does when the Hawks are out West. Not ideal, but unlike “well just miss half the game” for West Coasters strategy, it does let her see the entire game.
So love what you are, not what you would like to be.

You're still thinking about it in a very selfish manner
the idea that someone can go home from work, nap for 3 hours, watch the game, and then sleep for a few more hours and be fine is ridiculous. First of all, that runs entirely counter to how the human body works in terms of sleep needs, it may work for your friend but that doesn’t mean it works for many others. Second, a lot of people have responsibilities like, say, caring for children, that can easily coincide with watching a hockey game but not so much with napping.
The much better options are for west coasters to DVR the beginning of the game and watch it time-delayed – this way you can fast forward through the commercials and intermissions, which is actually pretty nice – or if you don’t have a DVR listen to the first half of the game on the radio and then watch the second half when you get home – not ideal, I get it, but at least you miss the beginning of the game but get to see the end which is better than seeing the beginning of the game but missing the end which is what your idea forces a lot of east coasters to do.

Talking about missing BASEBALL games that start a little early is pretty pointless here
not because it’s baseball and this is a hockey board, but because many people that post here are Cubs fans who are very used to the majority of their favorite team’s home games starting at 1 in the afternoon while they’re at work thus causing them to miss the entire game, not just the beginning of it.
I get your point about it sucking when the game starts an hour before you get home, but at least you’ll still get to see the 2nd and 3rd periods, that’s better than the east coaster who’s watching his or her team play a game on the west coast that starts at 10PM EST and not being able to stay up late enough to watch it all of the way through. Think about, if you’ve got to miss part of the game, would you rather have to miss watching the 1st period or the 3rd period? ’Nuff said

No, while our theater is pretty cool, it isn't that modernized yet.
Still great though, and after my daughter finishes her summer visit, we may go and see it in 3D, just because we enjoyed it that much.
There are a lot of scenes where I know that the 3D would have been amazing.

It is very faithfully done.
There is one scene at the end of part one that I was really angry about, and they remedied that right away in the opening of part two.
Very pleased with the movie adaptation(s).

As far as realignment w/ only Chicago in the east...
3 words would solve that: Original Six Provision. O6 teams should play each other more than other teams. It’d never happen, but I couldn’t see anyone who pays to see games(AKA, fans) have a problem w/ that. And it’s not like they all are juggernauts or just pushovers(like the hay the Hawks would make playing in the Shitty New Central)

Particularly in camps like this. Guys will run around a bit more trying to get noticed. Its been the same at any try-out (at any level) I ever attended as a player or coach. Not saying it should happen, just that it does and will continue to regardless of rules. Besides, most “league” rules don’t apply during camps anyway (or they apply so loosely they hardly matter).

Regarding realignment
Why don’t they just send Columbus east because no one gives a shit about them anyway? It would solve our problems of not having to suffer through six games with them every year. And everyone knows our problems are what really matters here.
it would also be hilarious
because Philly sent Carter & Richards out West so they wouldn’t have to deal with them much. So putting Carter in their Conference/Division would just be funny.
So love what you are, not what you would like to be.

c) Car, Dallas, Fla, Nash, Tampa
Conference 2:
a) Ana, Colorado, LA, Phoenix, S.J
b) Boston, buffalo, islanders, montreal, ottawa
c) Chi, Columbus, Det, StL, Toronto
Both conferences would have an East, central and western geographic breakdown. Travel becomes more evenly distributed by doing something like this although you’d have to fine-tune my list to better accommodate time zone issues.

I've thought of a realignment model that more or less follows Major League Baseball's model
Now, I know this would never get implemented, but I think that the MLB model would solve the problem of keeping history intact (maintaining traditional rivals) while also keeping travel concerns in mind. The idea is to have a “senior circuit” of the older teams and a junior circuit of younger franchises organized into geographic divisions with a few convienences thrown in.
Here it is:
Prince of Wales Conference
Eastern Division: Flyers, Canadiens, Bruins, Rangers, Islanders
Central Division: Sabres, Blackhawks, Red Wings, Blues, Maple Leafs
Western Division: Kings, Oilers, Flames, Stars, Avalanche
Cambell Conference:
Eastern Division: Devils, Capitals, Hurricanes, Lightning, Panthers
Central Division: Senators, Blue Jackets, Predators, Wild, Penguins
Western Division: Canucks, Sharks, Ducks, Coyotes, Jets

yeah, but where exactly will they be moving?
They could move to Quebec City or Hamilton, which would place them decidedly in the east and thus render a lot of this discussion moot. However, they could also end up moving to a place like Seattle or Kansas City which keeps them in the west
There are three types of people in this world: those who can count, and those who can't.
by FrankStallone on Jul 13, 2011 9:24 AM CDT up reply actions
I really think it will be QC or Hamilton
KC is another disaster waiting to happen and I think (and I hope) the league recognises that. Saskatoon would be pushing it, really pushing it IMO. As for Seattle, I’m inclined to say NO but I don’t have a lot of reasoning behind me as both Everett (since ‘03) and Seattle are fairly well supported (mind you Tacoma wasn’t around the WHL for long…).
I think that if there’s any chance of Phoenix moving prior to the start of next season, that will effect re-alignment more than anything. If they go to Quebec, somebody’s going to have to come west if we stick with the current format. Perhaps that’s why we’re hearing rumblings about reverting back to a 4 division (2 per conference system)… because it would more easily accommodate a PHX-to-the-east scenario.
You are next.
A couple of things for you to consider
First of all, if the Coyotes move to Quebec then no, no one has to move west because the Thrashers already have in moving to Winnipeg. Some minor re-aligning of the divisions will have to take place, but with the Thrashjets moving from the EC to the WC and the ’Yotes moving form the WC to the EC no conference re-alignment would be necessary.
Second of all, while Hamilton and Quebec City have both been brought up, I don’t think that either is really likely for a few reasons. 1) Canada has already just gotten a 7th team in the Jets and I doubt Bettman or NBC would be willing to let an 8th move there and leave the US unless there were literally no other options. 2) While the greater Toronto area could easily support another NHL team, the Maple Leafs do not want to have to share their market base with (and as a result lose some revenues to) another team and will do everything in their power to prevent anyone from relocating to Hamilton. 3) There’s already been such a massive stink about Winnipeg being such a small market with such a small stadium, that problem is even more compounded in Quebec City.
Thirdly, I think you’re wrong about both Seattle and Kansas City. Both cities already have already shown that they can support major professional sports franchises, and quite frankly both (especially Kansas City, but also Seattle to a certain extent) would mesh well with Bettman’s well known desire to attempt to grow the game in non-traditional markets.
There are three types of people in this world: those who can count, and those who can't.
by FrankStallone on Jul 13, 2011 11:07 AM CDT up reply actions
Response time!
Good point about the whole Atlanta/Winnipeg conference angle. Sometimes things present themselves so obviously they are forgotten.
An 8th Canadian team is far more likely than you care to admit or consider. When you think of NBC/Versus, why would they care if PHX moved to Quebec City? They don’t air any Canadian teams anyway. This way there are left garbage/bad drawing teams to worry about and they can focus even more on their east coast bias and Chicago/Detroit. Bottom line, better for them.
As for your Toronto argument… there is a litany of articles you can find amongst Canadian papers that say regardless of what the Leafs think, the league doesn’t consider another Ontario team to be a threat to them. The concern with a team in Hamilton has always been the ongoing viability of the Sabres. With their new money-bags owner some of this has been remedied (for how long remains to be seen).
As for the small market thing… Quebec City’s metro population is larger than Winnipeg’s and both of them probably have more “total” hockey fans than a place like Detroit. Not to mention, Quebec is the seat of parliament in Quebec and there are a lot of French/Quebecois corporations headquartered out of there. Many of which consider supporting the Canadiens too “English”. Also, the provincial government is fully on board with building a new arena and is going to be built (replacing the old Colisee). That will be done within a couple of years.
Kansas City Scouts anybody? They lasted all of 2 seasons in the NHL. Kansas City can have a history of supporting MLB, NFL all they want – it is an absolute minefield for the NHL and they’d be batshit crazy to go back there. After the Atlanta mess I think the NHL has figured out not to touch KC with a barge pole.
Seattle? Like I mentioned before – the area seems to support Everett and Seattle T-Birds fairly well. A couple things to consider though: 1) Will an NHL team in Seattle kill off those franchises? Probably. 2) Everett in 2003 and Seattle in 2009 had new rinks built for them (something in the neighbourhood of 50-75 mildo each), would the community really want to pony up new dollars for a rink when they wouldn’t for the Sonics? Would they fix up the Key arena? The T-Birds moved from there…
Finally, I think Bettman’s well known desire to grow into non-traditional markets is seriously under-going a change. I can’t believe, for a second, that the owners are happy having to keep PHX afloat for ANOTHER season. If I were a betting man, I say those same owners (who Bettman answers to) want the security of a traditional market over some roulette wheel of KC or Seattle.
You are next.
by M7 on Jul 13, 2011 2:14 PM CDT up reply actions
Also, considering that the 6 Candian teams generate
33% of the league revenue, I’d think the other owners would like to add 2 more teams (1 more if you count Winnipeg for next season) into the league-wide revenue pool. The league will benefit more by having Canadian teams locking up Canadian TV deals then the league will benefit from franchises in KC or Seattle ‘adding’ to the NBC/Versus deals.
You are next.
by M7 on Jul 13, 2011 2:21 PM CDT up reply actions
As long as the CDN stays at par or above the USD
That’s the main reason the league has done so well in the past few years. I think they’d be a bit hesitant to put too many teams in small market Canadian cities, in fear of the dollar going down again and taking those teams with them
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
Additional Two Cents
I think that Hamilton is dead, not just because of the Leafs, but more because of the Sabres. If you live in the Greater TO area, more western burb fans are getting tix to the Sabres games to see NHL hockey and boycotting the costs and performance of MapleLeaf Sports that control the Leafs. I would bet upwards of 20% of Sabres season ticket holders are coming across the Peace Bridge evrynight. No way the Sabres want to share that and no way can they afford to.
As such, I think that Seattle is prime (minus a great rink). Especially since they lost the NBA conflict. The corporate base is clearly there.
I'm not sure
about Seattle. They seem to support the Tips and the T-Birds just fine, but professional sports don’t have a great history recently in that city. The Sonics just moved, the Mariners almost moved 15 years ago, the Seahawks have had issues throughout their history….
I maintain that Portland would be a good location
Trailblazers sell out often, and the Timbers (MLS) have some of the most rowdy, fervent fans in the league – just watch these:
I feel like the city would embrace another sports team completely. When the Winterhawks were in the playoffs this past season, the games were sold out (10K+) with people trying to buy tickets outside the arena.
Nothing is guaranteed, but Portland has a rich hockey history. And I miss live NHL games.

Portland Displaced Wildlife
would be my NHL team name suggestion to continue with the deforestation trend.
by transienthawk on Jul 14, 2011 2:12 PM CDT up reply actions
I would love that
If it happened. I’ve been going to Winterhawk games since I was 7 but have still never been to an NHL game. Portland is a pretty good sports town and I think the NHL would do fine here, but the problem has always been finding a potential owner since Paul Allen doesn’t seem interested.
problems with QC and possibly Hamilton
QC doesn’t have an arena. They would probably use the AHL arena in Hamilton like the Winnipeg Whatevers are in Winnipeg but that means that they’re already at one of the lower capacities in the league, which could become a problem in as few as 5 or 6 years if the team isn’t doing well enough to sell out the small arena.
So love what you are, not what you would like to be.

Chris Block hates Carcillo----thinks vet signings show something wrong with locker room

Detroit Red Wings - Green Bay Packers - Minnesota Twins : Axis of Evil
I haven't listened to it, and can't at work, I assumed
that while the vet signings will be a good presence in the locker room, i never really thought there was something wrong there. Also we have a lot of young guys in our system that aren’t ready for the big leagues – we need the depth (we’ve seen what happens when we don’t have it). I mean yeah, our guys were mostly crap at standing up for each other last season, but I always thought some of it was symptomatic of the long prior season and summer – like an overall lethargy, but nothing personal. Obviously I know nothing, but that really wasn’t a connection I ever made — about the vets meaning there are issues in the locker room.

Im not sure Im totally on board with Blocks analysis here...
Although I dont agree with you that everything was sunshine and lollipops either. Remember when Toews and Seabrook were laughing off the suggestion that the Hawks could miss the playoffs and only Campbell seems to realize that the season was being pissed away?
Block seemed to indicate that all these new vet voices could actually cause more problems than they solve. When someone like Jamal Mayers or Sean O’Donnell stands up to call someone out, Block think’s the Cup guys are going to say to themselves "who the hell is this guy? I won a fucking Stanley Cup whe
He also raised a question about the Carcillo signing….did the Hawks even want him at noon on July 1st? He linked Ward going to Washington to the Hawks turning around to get Carcillo to solve the “grit” question.

I'll admit to not listening yet so I'm going on your word
but the veteran thing seems like a radical jump to conclusion as well. So long as O’Donnell and Mayers don’t show up on the first day of training camp yapping their mouths at everybody (which would also be pretty out of character), they’re going to earn the respect to speak up after a game, say in February.

I listened again to parts of it on the way home.
I agree the vet thing was a jump. He says two vets is understandable but three makes it curious. Im not sure why one additional vet makes it so suspicious.
On your Carcillo article, he doesn’t so much disagree with your conclusion as he takes it into consideration, and then concludes that it doesn’t matter because he is ineffective in the role he plays anyhow. Which he may or may not be right about.
Detroit Red Wings - Green Bay Packers - Minnesota Twins : Axis of Evil
Well he's dumb
if the Hawks were in a position where they had to spend to reach the floor, they could have signed younger guys like Ward, Brouwer, even traded for Cogliano— bigger deals for longer terms.
All veteran signings show is that a team is in position to win. Teams like the Hawks don’t need to spend their season developing players at the NHL level, so young guys spend time in Rockford. Vet signings (especially for one year deals) are essentially gap fillers, and they’re willing to take one year-ers because the players themselves know they’re old.
You must have me confused with someone else, I have never been to Chicago.
[whispers] I sexually assaulted Scottie Pippen in 1997.
Q loves veteran players.
I really think it’s as simple as that. I can definitely see Q asking Stan to get him some players during the offseason that have been around the block more than a few times. It’s also no coincidence that a couple of them played for Q before.
"Against logic there is no armor like ignorance."

I don't think its sunshine and lollipops, I just don't think there was a lockerroom problem that the Hawks
had to get vets in to suddenly fix. And I don’t think the Toews and Seabrook pie in the sky optimism versus Campell’s realistic view indicates that either. Maybe I just have a different view of what constitutes a “lockerroom issue” versus not.
I could see the vets raising some issues if call someone out, but only because the respect and bond is there for the current team that’s left, but they may not have it for the new guys and think it has to be earned (which is fair, imo). Some new guy coming in and calling people out, even if they are a vet, when he is new to the team and doesn’t know them, could create some problems. I could be wrong though. Like they want to play well for Toews, or Seabrook, etc…, but who the hell is Montador to say anything at this stage, you know?
Also, yeah that is a question.

I think the new guys have been around long enough to know
that the first and loudest voice in the locker room is the captain’s, and they will defer to Toews (and other Hawk locker room veterans) when any team issues need to be addressed.
I can’t see any of them speaking out of turn in the dressing room until they have established a rapport with Q, Toews and the rest of the team.

I would think, and hope so
but I can imagine veteran players coming in thinking, or even being told, to bring their veteran voice and be a leader in the locker room even when they are not THE leader.

O’Donnell and Brunette only got deals because they play with their heads. I could roll across the ice faster than they could skate. One Carcillo signing does not signal a change to general meat-headery, the important UFA signings were older, yes, but smarter players who get shit done.

“But here is the real question: With the money spent on role players like Sean O’Donnell, Jamal Mayers and Dan Carcillo, wouldn’t it have been prudent to find another center? It’s probably a little more important than that extra muscle they brought in…Sharp at center is not the answer. Not for Sharp at least, and probably not for the team…Hopefully the Hawks have more to do with half the summer to go, otherwise its déjà vu all over again at the center position.”

his post today is a good one though
He basically calls out bowman for the same things that we call him out for, making everything seem like a position of strength when he doesn’t have to.
The Hawks could have made the case they bettered themselves in other areas, so a small weakness at center depth is sustainable, but they didn’t say that Monday. They also could have repeated an earlier summer sentiment that the free-agent center possibilities this offseason were weak and they were saving money for an in-season deal. But that wasn’t heard either. They could have simply said “you cant have a perfect team and this is where we are short,” but when presented with that opening, it was denied.

"Jonathan Toews: Youngest Triple Gold Winner EVER...EVER is a LONG time, no script written for people like that"
It worked for the blue line
considering how much Stan was pumping John Scott’s tires before going out and acquiring both Montador and O’Donnell and relegating Scott to the 8th (or 7th if Campoli isn’t re-signed, but that still keeps him out of the line-up most nights) defenseman spot, so maybe we’ll get lucky and he’s doing the exact same thing now with centers. is this a guarantee or a sure thing? Absolutely not, far from it. I’m merely trying to remain optimistic in light of the fact that Stan has played that exact same game in the recent past.

IMO, this team is already better than last years in almost every area with the exception of the forecheck.
I think he would be right to assume this team will be alive near the deadline….but its unclear to me why simply “being alive” is good enough for a team with Cup aspirations. Being in solid playoff shape by January would do a world of good for our guys. It keeps our stars minutes down and Crawford wont have to start every game for 3 months. Im still of the mind that the Hawks would be much better off coming out of the gates fully stocked and ready to take advantage of a soft easy schedule.

They’re not going to handcuff themselves with an overpayment while having a few guys less than two years away from being everyday players. Those guys also come way cheaper and with much less risk than dealing for a RFA worth $3.5 to 4.5 million for multiple years.

I agree
Not the perfect team but improved over last year . Tired of seeing Kaner, Toewes in the middle of scrums. Knock Scott if you have to but our guys had more room and more respect from the opposition when he was out there. True they had more breakaways too but that’s why I think he brought in the variety of pugilists. See who’s the best fit . I think teams have put themselves in a salary bind by overpaying and we’ll scrape up a need trade somewhere along the line. I’m not ready to pull my case of Bud Light Aluminum Hawks Stanley cup beer out of the closet in celebration again but I’m more optimistic

In fact, they just laughed at him while he skated around in vain, pleading for someone, anyone, to take a dance with him. Then he’d take an idiotic penalty in his own zone and we’d get scored upon.
thats not true
wideman and murray actually commented about it during a game against the Nucks. Scott got a game misconduct for looking at a guy wrong before a faceoff . I think the hawks had a lead of several goals after scott was tossed the Nucks found their beer muscles and had their way with the hawks forwards. Prior to Scott getting tossed noone on the nucks really took a run at anyone. I think we were up by alot and ended up winning by a goal or maybe even in ot. Can’t remember exact game but I do remeber this situation late last year
Damned if he does. Damned if he doesn't.
If Bowman comes right out and says “These are my team’s areas of weakness and we will address them later via a possible trade” doesn’t that weaken his bargaining position later? (And I believe I have read that very argument in other posts on this site.)
So if he blows sunshine up everyone’s ass about how all is right with the world in Blackhawkland he’s criticized for not seeing the obvious holes that still exist on the roster and doing something about it RIGHT NOW.
Conversely, if he lets the cat out of the bag and publicly states where his team is weakest he’s criticized for not being savvy enough to play it close to the vest and thereby strengthening his negotiating power when deals need to be made later on.
All-in-all I think most people agree that he’s done a good job thus far of addressing the needs of the team that were identified after last season. It would seem that his judgement was that the free agent market could most readily address the ‘toughness’ issue while working within the plan the team had for how to use their available dollars under the cap. The next step seems to be to evaluate exactly what they have with the new veteran bodies on the roster and the development of the youngsters in the system that they expect to contribute sooner rather than later (i.e. Morin, Kruger, Smith, Stanton, Beach, Lalonde, etc). I have no doubt that Stan will use the extra cap dollars available to pull the trigger on a deal to bring in additional help at any point between now and the trade deadline, if and when it’s necessary.
"Against logic there is no armor like ignorance."

Bowman is holding his cards close, IMO
During the season, he said things like, “we need more depth down the center” when every team is shuffling to make changes and hoping for the playoffs.
Over the summer, he’s not going to walk down Madison banging a pan with a wooden spoon, yelling about their lack of depth. He’s the same guy who praised Scott’s game, remember.
I think it would be foolish for him to say that his current centers suck and they hope to change them with a midseason trade.
As of now, all he has done (and shown) is faith in who they have, which any GM in any sport will do. We don’t know what the Hawks AREN’T showing, and I can’t be mad over that— yet.

2C
Is Sharp sure to fail at center?
I think he is fine at 2C. The fucking lines are never the same for more than 5 games with our madman of a coach anyway. Everybody is going to play center at some point. If Savard was still coach Kane would be the 2C (Remember that?). Kruger will play there some too. Everybody starts somewhere.
Everybody has this team under a microscope and they have not even had a skate together yet. How do you know what Olesz does? How much Ben Smith and Kruger have we actually seen.
Nobody has ever said to my knowledge that Sharp will fail at Center.
The problem stems from the fact that he doesn’t seem to have much chemistry with Marian Hossa and for some reason everybody freaks out when you talk about breaking up Toews and Kane (defensive reasons). Add that to the fact that Sharp prefers to play LW and there you have it…..people want a new 2C.
Detroit Red Wings - Green Bay Packers - Minnesota Twins : Axis of Evil
Sharp and Hossa
it is an empirical fact that these two didn’t really click together last year but, for the most part, they had Schleppy McSchlep on LW.
DDN has shown they can click with the right “guy” (e.g. Brouwer)- perhaps Brunette on the second line is an option that unlocks Sharp/Hossa magic, and Rusty (or the top-6 forward the Hawks land, or the revolving door) lines up with DDN.
/standard disclaimer about Sharp being best as LW with DDN
We like our people!

I think that’ll work out nicely. Even if Sharp doesn’t give a shit about his own zone again this year, and he historically hasn’t whenever on a line with Kane, a healthy Hossa with Toews, and a healthy Bolland on the third line can mitigate a lot of the Fun Boys’ defensive inattentiveness.
Second City Hockey
It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a goddamn shame
I’m thinking along the lines of having Brunette with the Fun Boys and sliding Morin up with Toews and Hoss Boss.
At least have someone know where the defensive zone is on that line and have Toews and Hossa school young Morin on his defensive responsibilities as there are sure to be a few miscues in that department.
But with Q, who knows what that blender will churn out.

Will this Sharp shit ever end?
He’s proved that he’s more than capable at the position. It’s not the ideal as we all know, as he’s best suited to play a sniping winger role, but the Hawks have proved for awhile they can win games with him at center. The problem, of course, is that he’s not the playmaker type that maximizes Hossa’s skills. I still think Hossa should skate with Toews and Kaner with Sharp, and instead of worrying about the ever elusive play making center, worrying about a defensively responsible winger with size. For instance; 1st line of Frolik/Toews/Hossa, 2nd line of Brunette/Sharp/Kane. This would break up everyone’s favorite 3rd line set up, but Olecz is much better suited for that line than Fro. Sharp has been and can still be the solution at center… Again, it’s not the ideal, but it’s the best in house option we have.

When you are in posession of the puck what does the center do?
He becomes one of three forwards. If he is in deep and a turnover happens, he cannot be expected to be the first forward back. Sharp knows where to go without the puck. He is fairly good with the puck.
Really, he is only the center when a puck is dropped and in the D zone.
Maybe the problem here is Hossa. Wherever he goes, it seems he needs a different center or winger
Hossa showed chemistry with both Toews and Bolland.
The people want Toews with Kane and Bolland to play checking center…neither of which is Hossa’s fault.
Detroit Red Wings - Green Bay Packers - Minnesota Twins : Axis of Evil

Jesus people. This used to be a town that loved tough Defense! That’s where I think Sharpies issues lie as a #2 Center. He isn’t the presence is his own end anywhere near the performance of Toews or Bolland. I want someone as good as those two in our own end.
I have no issues with #10’s performance on the wing. Just not #2 center.

15-19-88-10-7
67-36-81-2-5/14/8
Unless Fro keeps up his jittery shoot-the-puck-at-every-opportunity stuff, in which case he gets subbed out.
10-19-88-2-7
29-36-81-8-14
Sharp on the point was driving me nuts last season but I agree Q will probably keep him there. Bickell and Frolik are interchangeable on the 2nd PP but if Bickell can go stand out front he’s a better option than Frolik.

Kane on the halfboards,
Toews below the goal line, Brunette in front, Sharp creeping in on the far dot, and Seabs in the high slot …. I don’t care how good your PK is.
Yes, this is a pretty sick PP.

No Sharp on point?

Top 6 line combos from last night's replay of 2010 final game 6.
Kopecky / Toews / Hossa
Ladd / Sharp / Kane
Worked pretty well. With Brunette taking one LW spot who takes the other? That will be the biggest question mark and competion of training camp barring any deal between now and then.
Personally I am not counting Morin out of that competition. I think he will make a strong bid to stick in the top 6 out of camp.
I can see Brunette / Toews / Hossa and Morin / Sharp / Kane starting the season.

I'd love to see
?/Sharp/Kane this year. I feel like it will be defensively responsible enough, and offensively lethal.
I want this as well. I love the idea of Hossa with Tazer and Brunette.

19-81
it just strikes me as a giant pain in the ass to play against.
And it adds to 100.
you could have made that more clear

It could have been that Seabrook was ordering pizza and sent Kruger to get it.
I see you guys haven't traded away the rest of your team yet

we’ll see. if pronger misses the start of the season and brzygalov gives up four or five goals in the first couple of games he’ll be in Lake Adirondack or wherever the farm team is and Leighton will be starting.
We need a goalie.
We really need a goalie.
We’ll do anything for a goalie.

It has been rumoured that Bryan Bickell is heir to the Bick’s Pickles throne.

Candid Kane and Hjammer
“The guys we brought in are a bit tougher,” Hjalmarsson said. “Maybe that’s what we were missing last year. That toughness I think. It’s sad to see a guy like Brian go, especially for me. That’s a guy that helped me a lot when I came up from the minors. He helped me on the ice and off the ice. Every good thing has an end. That’s what you guys say over here. I wish him luck in Florida.”
“I don’t think you can have ever have more than enough [toughness], especially on our team,” Kane said. “You look at so many skill players that we have, I think last year — I don’t want to say we got exposed — but we weren’t like as protected enough as years before.Sometimes you have to mix and match. You just can’t put the best 12 players on the ice at all times because they are the most skilled. You need certain players for certain roles.”
Brouwer was an occasional line-mate of Kane and recently intimated his teammates weren’t thrilled with the continued roster turnover from the 2009-10 championship team.“I think the thing with Brouwer, he never really felt like he got a fair shake,” Kane said. “A lot of people have heard that. I told him good luck.”

Not exactly a ringing endorsement of Scott as the protector.

I think its a ringing endorsement
that one Meat guy does not a tough team make. The whole fourth line is going to be rougher than the sugar plum line it was last year.

Scott wasn't out there enough
Did Scott lose or draw in any fight last year?? Not that I recall .Q thought they could outrun everyone. Sounds like a different approach this year. Guys brought in to make room for the skilled players . If the opposition insists on being goofs then someone hands them their head as a consolation prize. Just hope the PP/PK is better this year . for my money thats the key to our season.
A couple of points
1) Scott wasn’t out there enough because the league as evolved to the point that putting someone on the ice who’s JUST an enforcer screws you as you need guys that can actually skate and play the game. When Scott suited up he never saw more than 5 minutes of ice time because putting him out there more would have killed them.
2) Yes it’s all well and good that Scott didn’t lose any fights last year, nor do I imagine he will ever lose many fights just due to the fact that he’s a fucking giant. His ability to fight doesn’t exactly help us much if no one on the other team will dare to drop gloves against him.

Is it a coincidence that the Hawks only won 19 of the 40 games that Scott played in?
Son, when you participate in sporting events, it's not whether you win or lose : it's how drunk you get.
You meant like....
Stalberg and Pisani guys that skate and play the game? Why do I think of Ken Yaremchuk when I see Stalberg play?I think Scott does more for this team that either one of those guys did and I think the loses snib is talking about can hardly be attributed to scotts minimal ice time . Not saying Scott should get a regular shift even just think he’s a useful situational weapon. I think he gives our guns more room out there. Especially against the woosie Nucks and Wings
Obviously those 21 losses were not all his fault but,
if Scott (or Pisani or Boynton or whoever) can only be trusted on the ice for say 5 minutes a game, mostly early in the game, then other players have to play more minutes, especially late in the game. Simple, no?
There is a cumulative effect then and to me they often looked tired and error prone in the third period…The Hawks outscored their opponents 85-62 in the first and 89-65 in the second and got outscored 74-89 in the third period.
Son, when you participate in sporting events, it's not whether you win or lose : it's how drunk you get.
something OT
Just secured an apartment in STL – i have a choice, it appears between charter and ATT UVerse – any horror stories? recommendations?
Uverse is generally pretty good
I did have a problem with CSN+ however. Occasionally the channel wouldn’t work. You could see the game when you’re viewing the guide in the little mini-screen but when you actually select the channel it wouldn’t work. I think I was in the minority on that however since I’ve never heard anyone else say they had a problem.
Aside from that, it’s a pretty good provider. It has Versus for whenever they broadcast Hawks games and as long as you have that, CSN/CSN+, and NBC, you’re fine.
Could you not just subscribe to Centre Ice package on one of those providers?
Surely St. Louis is considered out-of-market as far as the Hawks are concerned, no? Or do neither of those offer the C.I. package?

pay 180$ a season (or whatever it is) to watch hockey on top of 50-100$ a month for cable and internet if i don’t have to.

I will tell you that charter is terrible. The picture sometimes goes in an out and the customer service is a bad as it gets
I have Uverse
out in California. I’m kinda cheap, so I don’t pay for the package that includes VS. I just listen to the Hawks games via the radio feed on the website. Only complaint I have is that sometimes the picture freezes up and you have to switch channels real quick to get it back.
