Less Than Deep Thoughts

We've fully entered the summer doldrums these days, and other than Chris Campoli's arbitration hearing, the Parcheesi blockade that seems to constitute the Michael Frolik negotiations, and possibly a trade that probably isn't coming, there's not anything going on. Nor will there be. So every so often, I'll just put up a post about what's rattling around in my head to open up a new thread as others fill up, as Sam's Summer of Love On Second City continues (no, Killion and McClure are not dead, just taking a well-earned break. Well, a break nonetheless). Anyway, here's what I think.

-A lot of us were banking on one or two more moves to finish out the summer, namely a fourth line center and someone else to fill out the top six. A lot of us were getting frustrated that it is looking a lot less likely that they're coming. Still might, after all Turco and Pisani weren't signed until August (I think), but I've gotten past that. The most likely scenario is that either Marcus Kruger or Jeremy Morin are going to get the first crack at the second line. And i think that's fine. If they really do believe in Kruger, they probably should give him every chance. I didn't see anything, but the baseball fan in me was screaming, "Small sample size!" -- a phrase I hear far too often in scenarios I'd rather not, but that's another story for another time. It would be optimum if either Kruger or Morin or both proved that they can be long term solutions for these areas. It saves money, proves your system is producing, and keeps the ball rolling. If they don't work by Christmas, the Hawks will have flexibility to address these needs midseason, when other names might be available that aren't now. The briefest of glances show that Daymond Langkow or Tuomo Ruutu or Shane Doan are in the last year of deal on teams that very well might blow. I'm sure if I did more research even more enticing names would pop up.

-My dreams of Chris Drury are beyond the respirator at this point, but the lack of anyone showing interest probably means he's either more hurt than I thought, or everyone thinks he is. He probably doesn't sign until someone gets to run him through a pretty heavy medical or fitness test. But that's ok. I get the inkling that your 4th line center come October 7th is Ben Smith. Smith played a lot of center at Rockford, and some at BC. He's shown a brain, he can probably handle it. We'll see if he gets a look there at camp.

-You can add up the numbers of players signed, include Campoli and Frolik, and come to the conclusion that there are too many bodies and someone has to go. Me? I like it. Competition in camp will not be a bad thing. Last year, players had to play their way off the ice. Now? They have to play their way on it. Stalberg, Smith, Mayers, Bickell, Morin, and Kruger are all on notice. Don't produce, someone's already up with the big club to take your place. Look at how ineffective Pisani had to be to finally be scratched. That won't happen this season, if this is how they go forward.

-Hey, Patrick Kane made an appearance! Now let's start rumors!

-To end things, once again none of us are going to The Convention, so if any of you are and would like to write something up for us, do a Fanpost, email us, and we'll bump it to the front page. Enjoy the fat guys in Kane jerseys sweating on you and the north shore kids crying.

I like most of those names, Fels. Dominic Moore is another one to look at should the Bolts be selling some parts. Another guy in the last year of his deal with decent draw numbers.

Madden signed in August in ‘09 as you’ve mentioned too. I think Kuc bunked that Kaner wrist thing too.

Exactly this

He’s beefed up significantly. At least he’s taking the time to get in good shape. Taking the offseason seriously. I think we’ll be pleasantly surprised by Kaner next season.

he seemed committed when the playoffs were over

so its not really surprising, I think his desire to win and competitiveness can be really underestimated.

I think that we have underestimated his competativeness and his desire to win

By we I don’t mean the people that post regularly at SCH, I mean we as in ‘Hawks fans and hockey fans and general. The general reputations that they’ve got throughout Chicago and really throughout North America amongst hockey fans are that Toews is the super serious, hyper-competitive one while Kane is mostly just a party boy. Most of the more knowledgeable fans realize that that is an unfair characterization of Kaner mostly due to a handful of unfortunate incidents that were massively over-reported (i.e. the cabbie dispute, the bar skank that photographed him and his Southwest boarding pass while he was asleep) and that he really is a dedicated and competitive professional athlete. I’m glad that he appears to be really focused this off season, if he’s working as hard as it appears that he is then he will explode next season and a lot of people probably will be surprised just not necessarily many of us that spend far too much time ignoring work to post here.

it's sort of buying into the marketing

I mean, that’s how the Hawks package and market Kaner and Tazer to the fans. It’s not surprising it’s so easy to get caught up in, that’s the point of savvy marketing.

I think Mayers might be pencilied in for 4C

unless another move is made. For what it’s worth, he doesn’t take that many draws anymore, but when he does he is pretty good at it. 55.4% at the dot since the lockout (on only 2384 draws).

What’s happening with RJ? I thought they might bring him back as a FOGO guy, but it looks like we have too many forwards already.

by zacked on Jul 13, 2011 4:40 PM CDT reply actions

I think you answered your own question. The minute Mayers was signed I think RJ knew his fate. Too bad. I really like that guy. I mean, Inner Me knows that we were going to be icing a weaker-than-desired 4th line if he’s there full-time, but I’ll miss him all the same.

And wasn't McLean's a 2-way deal as well?

It seems far more likely that, unless Smith and/or Kruger and/or Mayers just look really bad in camp, that McLean’s going to start off and likely spend the brunt of the year in Rockford. My guess is that he’s been signed as more or less an insurance policy in case of rampant injuries or 4th line ineffectiveness.

While I do agree

with everything that was said. I still think he will have the chance to win that spot (4C). I mean yeah he played the last 2 seasons in Sweeden, but he was the last person cut from the Ning last season, and his NHL numbers aren’t too too terrible.

By no means am I advocating this scenario, I just think it may turn out to be one of the more interesting battles in camp this season. Don’t get me wrong, I like Smith & Kruger, but am not even remotely convinced that either of them are ready for a full time spot as a pivot.

Sure Kruger didn’t have much chance to get in to a rhythm last season when he got called up, and I know that he didn’t make any glaring mistakes, but I didn’t really see any flashes of whatever SB & possibly Q have seen. As for Smith, I sang his praises after the 2nd to last game against SCUM and nearly got crucified on here for it, but again he has such a small sample size that IMO he is more of an unknown. Could he really be as good as he showed in the limited number of games he played, or was that the best he has to offer? If it is the best he has to offer, I have no problem with that as long as he brings that same intensity every shift.

Bottom line: I just don’t know!!!

No worries, this was the plan all along!

by Tuke on Jul 14, 2011 12:39 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not saying that you're wrong about McLean

but this is at least the 2nd time you’ve said this:

but he was the last person cut from the Ning last season

Who gives a shit? And why is this a point in his favor? So he was the last person cut from a decent team, that does nothing for me.

Does that make the Panthers Iceland? Every once in a while they’ll blow their top and really fuck things up for everyone else (in this analogy, overspending to reach the cap floor = volcanic ash), but are otherwise generally ignored and some people regularly forget they even exist?

Didn't we supposedly have people competing for spots last year too?

Couple of kids plus those who eventually ended up in the bottom six. And John Scott, who should belong in a category all his own. Anyway, the competition for spots is only good if there’s a fair amount of talent amongst the competitors. It’s like those Lemonhead games they run at the UC: yes, yellow won yet again, but at the end of the day all that gets you is cheap candy. The BEST cheap candy available, but still. You get the point.

Not saying the depth that we have is automatically foul, of course.

I do like that we have breathing room in the cap, but I think I’ll leave it until the season to decide if I think it’s worth it.

yeah

but we added Brunette, so there’s only one top-6 spot open (vs. two last year.)

and, if Frolik signs, the 3rd line looks a lot more set than a year ago.

and, the people competing are a lot of the same people (Stalberg, Smith, Morin, Kruger, Beach?). Since they’re all a year older, it’s more credible, no?

finally, not singling you out, but there’s been a lot of “i’m gonna hang back on and suspend judgment. if this works out, i’ll climb aboard the express, but if it doesn’t, i’ll give Stan what for.”

I’m comfortable going into the season with our team today.

I hope Rusty Olesz turns into a pleasant surprise for us, and we have a solid top 6 without any of the holes.

It’d be great if Stan’s moves put our team back into top contention, but if not then I give him awesomely high marks for putting himself in a good position to make a move later and help the team out even more.

I have yet to declare because it's not over.

There are still a lot of moves to be made, potentially. I can hardly declare the off-season a success or failure when I have an overwhelming sense of feeling like it’s not finished. Frolik isn’t signed. Fluffy’s still here. We’ve got more forwards than spots available.

Do I like what he’s done so far? Sure! I’m warming up to some of these moves absolutely. But there is no sense of off-season closure yet. I’ll get back to ya.

Templeton Rye'd the Lightning.

by Smokin Herb Grigsby on Jul 14, 2011 11:12 AM CDT up reply actions

yeah yeah yeah

Frolik and Campoli are works in progress but not wildcards. I presume Stan signs them for reasonable contracts ($4 million or so combined), and how this plays out will color my view of Stan’s job to a small extent.

The wild card is: will the Hawks pick up the top-6 guy they need? And nobody knows the answer to that. It’s a gamble with a lot of variables. Some people are on record as wishing the Hawks had added one of the expensaive FA options. Others say they are glad the Hawks didn’t.

The “wait and see” crowd wants it both ways, but you don’t get to see how the season goes, THEN go back in time and render your judgment on the Laich or Cole decisions. It doesn’t work that way.

We like our people!

by cliffkoroll on Jul 14, 2011 11:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Is this thing on?

So you want to put a grade on the off-season, now based on the assumption that Frolik and Campoli will sign and that no other moves will be made, rather than wait until the off-season is over to see who actually ends up on the roster?

by Skags on Jul 14, 2011 12:49 PM CDT up reply actions

scaling back

perhaps my ambition should be more modest.

Yes, there are still moves to be made before handing in the report card on Stan’s summer.

But the outline is there, and some key decisions have been made, like not spending $4.5 million for a top-6 forward.

Those decisions should be evaluated now, not later. It’s too easy to say “In retrospect, Stan passing on Laich was a good idea because the Hawks landed Stoll.” or “Stan passing on Laich was a mistake, since he never found his top-6 forward.” because the Laich decision had to be made in the face of uncertainty about what would come down the pike.

He was bought out, but that says nothing about his health

He chose not to file a medical exemption, but he was injured enough that had he chosen to he could have prevented the Rangers from buying him out. The fact that he allowed the buy out could mean that he thinks he’ll be healthy enough to contribute to a team this year, or it could also mean that he might be done and would rather just retire than go on LTIR

Saw this on Twitter... It's from Jesse Rogers so take out you grain of salt measuring cups...

Here’s the link

A few choice quotes:
"Ben Smith played really well in the playoffs. He played a lot of center in Rockford. And [Marcus] Kruger. Both those guys were probably two of our more effective forwards in the playoffs. " – Bowman

It’s believed Joel Quenneville wanted Kruger to start last year with the Hawks and would have made him their third line center. Expect that to be his role when this season starts, which means Patrick Sharp doesn’t have to start the year in the middle. – Rogers

Ahhhhh so no Bolland on the third? I don’t know what I think about that.

by SludgeFeast on Jul 13, 2011 8:39 PM CDT reply actions

it doesn't really matter which line bolland centers nominally

Because he’ll draw the important checking roles anyway?

by Detroit Must Die on Jul 13, 2011 9:26 PM CDT via mobile up reply actions

Bolland on 2nd line vs. 3rd line

To me the regular season pairings really don’t matter that much because it seems like they will change for the playoffs anyways. Sharp could play all year on wing and then switch to Center for the 2nd line in the playoffs and Bolland would move to the 3rd line Center spot. This is why I hope they acquire a decent 2nd line Center at the deadline this year for a playoff run.

by Commit99 on Jul 14, 2011 3:31 PM CDT up reply actions

A lot of people get touchy about the Sharp 2C thing...

What they don’t seem to understand is, the reason people want a “hypothetical” new 2C is because Sharp would rather play wing. He said so himself a few times. He is a pro, he won’t pout or complain, just suck it up and go, thank god.

I personally have no problem with him at center, provided he can stay near or above 50% at the dot. But because I like Sharp so much, I hope they can solve the doughnut thingy so he can play wing.

On a side note, in this day and age I find it to be flat out ridiculous that I can’t get local channels for a location at which I don’t live. I mean, now that all feeds are digital this really should not be anything even remotely complicated. I live in DC and get my cable from RCN, who also sell their services in Chicago. I really just fail to understand why I can’t pay a couple of extra dollars a month to receive the the Chicago CSN feed instead of (or alongside, either way whatever’s easier) the local DC CSN feed.

Part of the Rogers Sportsnet empire (aside from regional Sports networks – that can all be added to your cable package regardless of where you live – also awesome) is the AM radio Fan network. i don't think

you can compare the yankees to any other team. they will and should be rightfully hated by everyone outside of new york. their historical and modern world series wins/al pennants are simply unparalleled and only montreal can come close to the sheer amount of titles won by a team (although professional hockey seems to have had a lot less teams in its leagues in comparison, and thus a better chance of winning championships for those teams).

but in each other league, there is another team that is close to the top title winner in their league (toronto for hockey, boston-LA in basketball, pitt-dallas in football). but in baseball, it isn’t even close. given their ridiculous spending, ability to commandeer talent, and winning ways year in year out, and you have the makings of a truly detestable franchise.

in the words of mike royko, “Hating the Yankees is as American as pizza pie, unwed mothers, and cheating on your income tax.”

Same for the Canadiens of my youth, the Oilers, Celtics, and Lakers of the ’80’s, I don’t have to be a fan of the owner or GM of any of these teams, but I admire the way the play their respective games and therefore am a fan of the team. Hatred of a team because they win is just jeleousy. You are jelous of something another team has that your team never will.
Regarding the Red Wings, it’s not their hockey team I despise, it’s the asshole fan that wears an octopus hat without knowing what it means that piss me off. Every team has them. Look at the UC. They whistle on a breakout when up by 3 goals. FUCK! I hate those people, but I don’t hate The Hawks

I thought of this last night, if the Cubs and Yankees played in the WS, I would expect the Yankees to win, but would want the Cubs to. Love both teams. One disappoints and blames a fan, the other disappoints and goes out to win again. I hope the Cubs win some time during my life. I have to say I never thought I’d see the Sox win the WS and it happened. I knew the Hawks would.

So what I like the Yankees. One of my kids likes the Yankees and Notre dame (the little asshole). Those are his teams.

Dad was huge Mantle fan.

How good were the Yankees in the late ’60’s early ’70’s? Pathetic at best. I liked them anyway. Grandpa hated Jack Brickhouse. The Cubs were entertaining though. Steve Swisher, Steve Onteveros, Ron Santo, Ernie, Billy, Glenn Beckert (he lived nearby me). I knew their whole lineup every year. I still have my 1972 Cubs signed ball, even though I used it to play .500.

It's very clear that the list is talking about easiest to cheer for

in terms of placating their local fan bases. It’s “how easy is it for Detroit fans to root for the Red Wings as compared to how easy it is for Phoenix fans to root for the Coyotes”, not “how easy is it for a fan of another team to root for Detroit say, for example, if his/her actual favorite team has already been eliminated”. In terms of that, then yeah it makes perfect sense that the Wings would be the easiest team for a local fanbase to get behind given how consistently successful they’ve been for the last 2 decades

I know this was already posted, but it does raise some questions

Bowman on his young centers (posted by Sludgefest)

“We wouldn’t have done some of the other things I thought we needed to do if we went out and spent $3.5 million on a center.”

Stoll makes 3.6, maybe they did already check him out, and decided not to go that route. The Flieschmans and Laichs pulled in 4.5, so he might not even be talking about them here.

It’s believed Joel Quenneville wanted Kruger to start last year with the Hawks and would have made him their third line center. Expect that to be his role when this season starts, which means Patrick Sharp doesn’t have to start the year in the middle.

That’s Jesse’s thought right there, so it’s not coming from Bowman, but if it’s true that both Smith and Kruger could start the year with the big club, then I’m not sure what that will mean for Olesz.

Brunette-Toews-Kane
Sharp-Bolland-Hossa
Bickell-Kruger-Frolik
Mayers-Smith-Carcillo

Olesz could compete for Bickell or Frolik’s spot (or take Fro’s spot if he’s not resigned). I still don’t know if I buy Kruger making this team, but we’ll see, and this Smith at 4th line center situation sounds like it will probably happen unless Smith has a bad camp.

for sure

it’d be a high risk play (offensively), but if they believe that much in Kruger, I’d consider letting him center Sharp and Hoss and leaving bolland with Bickell and Fro.

All this uncertainty w/ young centers could be avoided by trading for Stoll (1 year left on his deal) and letting Kruger spend the year proving himself in Rock Vegas, but it doesn’t sound like that’s going to happen.

I also just realized that this configuration doesn’t include stalberg. If he’s here, I assume he’ll be getting time on the fourth line as well.

It certainly seems Stan wants to watch the early part of the season to figure out what he really has.

I’d assume Stalberg-Mayers and Carcillo will rotate on the wings for our 4th line. I hope Kruger spent some time bulking up like Kane this offseason if he is going to C Sharpies and Hossa. Somebody needs to get the puck on that line and Id rather it not be Hossa!

It’ll be interesting to see if Stalberg’s play on the 4th line changes at all skating with Mayers and Carcillo. Pure eye test, but last season I got the feeling our 4th line players were often there with the feeling that they were auditioning for top-6 duty. As a dedicated 4th-liner who knows that’s where his role is, with JM and DC, I wonder if we’ll see a more feisty Stalberg, a more effective one (even if not as “high” scoring).

and if an Olesz buyout is possible, Bowman's statement about a center at 3.5 is BS

(can’t access capgeek right now, so I’ll have to do this the hard way)

Kane-Toews-Brunette = 14.6 mil
Hossa-Stoll-Sharp = 12.8 mil
Fro (2mil)-Bolland-Bickell = 5.9 mil
Stalberg-Smith-Mayers-Carcillo = 3.0 mil

Keith-Seabs = 11.4 mil
Leddy-Hammer = 4.7 mil
Campoli (2.5)-Montador-Odonnell = 6.1 mil

Crow-Salak = 3.3 mil
Olesz buyout = 0.4 mil

22 man roster @ 62.2 mil. 2.1 mil still left over. (obviously all contingent on an Olesz buyout)

I could be mistaken, but I'm fairly certain that the 2nd buyout period

for teams with RFA’s that go to arbitration (i.e. the ‘Hawks) takes place in early August, which is well before training camp. Either he’s not going to be bought out (likely) or the idea that he’ll have “every opportunity at camp” is just Stan blowing smoke up our asses again (possible but doesn’t seem likely)

It's a moot point now

You need to have 2 RFAs actually go to arbitration to activate that buyout period in August. Since Stalberg resigned, our only RFA with an arb hearing is Campoli.

I might be wrong here, but I think there’s another buyout window just before the season starts, after camp. It’s possible if the Hawks don’t like what they see from Olesz in camp he gets bought out then.

It's a great piece (which is odd for Rozner, but gotta give credit where credit is due)

and I’m really happy to see such an article from a mainstream sports reporter. There is however one point he makes that I slightly disagree with. Rozner makes the comparison that using a homophobic slur is no different than using a racial slur (which I fully agree with) but his example is “what if someone called one of his black teammates the n-word” which I don’t think is an apt example. The thing is, in these cases that we hear about and turn into big news (like Guillen’s rant 5 years ago that Rozner talks about), the target of the slur is not actually homosexual him or herself and the offender can skate by with his superficial apology and claim that he meant no disrespect to the gay community.

One of the things Rozner does bring up is that many people are failing to understand why such slurs are hurtful or bad, which is why I propose that a much more appropriate rhetorical example would be to ask how we’d react if an athlete called his white teammate the n-word. The answer is pretty obvious if you think about it for even a moment – there would be just as much outrage over its use, and the athlete would certainly not be able to get away with claiming that he meant no disrespect to the black community. In my opinion, that’s a much better way to frame it to help people understand that Kobe Bryant calling a ref a f** is no less offensive or inappropriate simply because the ref isn’t actually gay than Ozzie Guillen calling Paul Konerko the n-word would be.

except

the n-word doesn’t ACTUALLY mean black. Sure, certain types of people use it like it does, but it doesn’t. It’s a specific slur used AGAINST black people. People who use the n-word are equating blackness with the n-word, in effect saying there is something wrong with it and that being black is bad, wrong and worthy of scorn.

Which is exactly what using that homophobic slur does, only toward gay people. It equates what they’re doing and homosexuality as a whole with that slur, in effect saying there is something wrong with it and that being gay is bad, wrong and worthy of scorn.

So love what you are, not what you would like to be.

by boldmatter on Jul 14, 2011 1:18 PM CDT up reply actions

I disagree that the n-word doesn't ACTUALLY mean black

the n-word as we know it is derived from the word “negro”, which is Spanish for the color black and was as we all know itself formerly used to classify African-Americans. Otherwise, I agree with your overall point that the the whole idea behind using a slur is to equate that person to the negative and wrong stereotypes that are associated with said slur.

Bolland as 2C

I know we all love Bolland’s shutdown abilities at 3C, but wasn’t he something of a prolific scorer before he joined the Hawks? In fact, I seem to recall there being some disappointment at his lack of scorng prowess at the NHL level. Am I “misremembering”? Maybe Stan/Q have plans for Bolland to get his chance as high scoring centerman between Sharp and Hossa.

Thank you Boston for saving us from a dreadful summer! Now, GO HAWKS!!!

He was certainly an offensive dynamo in juniors

I mean, he scored 130 points in just 59 games – a very nice 2.2 PPG average – during his last season in the OHL. Of course, it’s not exactly uncommon for a player who was a scorer in juniors or in college to play a completely different role in the pros. For example, John Madden was a mostly offensive player in college, averaging better than a PPG for his final 3 years at Michigan before re-defining himself as a perennial Selke candidate with the New Jersey Devils. I think that’s the same thing that Bolland has done, but the difference is that he’s more offensively skilled than Madden ever was.

by FrankStallone on Jul 14, 2011 1:43 PM CDT up reply actions

You're correct

And I have no problem with Bolly being tried out at 2C. Yes he’s maybe one of the best checking line centers in the league, but I think it’s fair to say it’s easier to find a good 3C than a 2C. Both Bolland and Hossa’s most offensively productive streaks last season were when they played together in February and March.

There are any number of conclusions one could draw

It could mean that he’s closer to being re-signed than we’ve been led to believe and that he’s almost in the fold, it could be an attempt on his part to be like "check it out Stan, the fans love me, this is why you should sign me for “x” that I’ve been asking for instead of “y” that you’ve been offering", or it could mean something completely different, or it could mean absolutely nothing

Both sides agreeing to terms

and it being essentially a ‘done deal’ doesn’t mean that all the appropriate paperwork has been signed, filed, and approved by the NHL. Might not be a ‘secret’ but merely a matter of formalities.

The conclusions I drew from their charity work? Before July 1, they were still considered Blackhawks. After July 1, I bet you didn’t hear squat about them doing charity FOR the ’Hawks.

by transienthawk on Jul 14, 2011 3:11 PM CDT up reply actions

But even still, if that's the case there's no need to keep it secret

there have been plenty of reports about different players and team having agreed to terms but the player having not actually officially signed a contract yet. If that were the case with Frolik why wouldn’t they report it as such?

I disagree with the notion that agreeing on terms with one of the 2 remaining RFA's,

both of whom are widely considered to be not irreplaceable but certainly important, would really be a “little story”. I feel like if they actually had agreed on terms we’d have seen a tweet from Tracy Meyers or Sassone or someone like that. The only conclusion that I think we can really draw is that while they may not have the exact framework of a new deal agreed upon they’re at least close enough that both sides are confident that Frolik will be a ‘Hawk in 2011-’12

A $2.067M cap hit? Sounds perfect

I don’t necessarily disagree that 2 years would be preferable to 3, but IMO that would certainly be a fair deal both for Frolik and the ‘Hawks and throwing in the extra year doesn’t really hurt. Hell, if the ‘Hawks signed Fro to a similar deal and he played more up to his offensive potential in the first 2 years than he did this past season then we’d be talking about how great of a bargain he is going into year 3

I sort of think Stan wants him to just play on his 1 year contract.

We hold all the leverage. Let Frolik play a contract year when were trying to win a Stanley Cup. It will get the best out of him and Stan can get a much larger body of work to judge him on before he hands him out a long term contract.

If he doesn’t like it, let him go to Europe. Its his only other option.

" I don’t see why not. It’s training camp. I know Quenneville likes him on the ice, and he wouldn’t be the first big guy to stand there as long as he can show some hands, which he hasn’t to this point. The power play has some openings with the loss of Brouwer and even Tomas Kopecky as well as Brian Campbell. I do think Brunette will end up being the guy in front of the net as well."

Way to misquote. They tried Scott there last year, so why not try him again this year? It isn’t what I want, but I could totally see them doing that in training camp.

Because it was a stupid idea in the first place. Barring a faceoff win, John Scott is too slow to get in front of the net in time. Even with a faceoff win, puck possession, and adequate time to get there, he isn’t good enough on his skates, nor does he have the hands to bury rebounds.

Sure, go ahead, try him in front of the net during some inter-squad scrimmages. The Hawks lost two accurate forwards in Dowell and Johnson, who made the top 25 most accurate, but added Brunette and Carcillo (surprisingly) who took more shots (119 total vs 207 total) and were just as accurate

Dowell and Johnson missed 16.8 % versus Brunette and Carcillo who missed 16.4 %

No Hawks D-men from last year appear on the top 25 or bottom 25 in missed net percentage, but Montador’s numbers in Buffalo rank him 12th best in hitting the net

155 taken, 118 on goal, 37 missed for a 23.9 miss percentage

So that’s….something.

You must have me confused with someone else, I have never been to Chicago.

Because Jonathan Toews wins championships, he’s viewed as a God amongst Hockey Players who farts rainbows and is incapable of making a bad play. He is, of course, just another interchangeable centreman who happens to get favourable offensive shifts and generates some success with his situation.

Did you read his posts?

The newest one explains his logic, and honestly they do have a bit of a point. I love Toews and always want him to be a Hawk. I think he is an extremely gifted player and would not trade him for anything, and my rose colored glasses say he is the best center out there, but can we say that having someone like Getz or Datsuyk, etc. wouldn’t have gotten us to the same place? Maybe, maybe not.

Is it October yet?

by stacie7 on Jul 15, 2011 10:54 AM CDT up reply actions

That doesn't really prove anything

Those are all high caliber players, great leaders, the best of the best. Sure they’re interchangeable but only with other elite talent. You’re not going to toss your average center out there in Toews’ place and win a championship. You’re just not. He’s a guy that’s proven himself on every single stage. It’s not just a coincidence his teams win championships and anyone that thinks otherwise is asinine.

I really don’t get what the argument is here.

He said that the Hawks and Canada could have won without Toews.

Now Canada is arguable (although he was voted best forward), but to say the Hawks could have won in 2010 with a different Center seems like a stretch.

Also, I was joking about his fandom being revoked.

I was saying replace Toews with a guy of the same skill level as him. Not with an average centre. Obviously Toews is elite. But switch him with another elite centre. Would you still have won?

by hairhelmet on Jul 15, 2011 8:58 PM CDT up reply actions

As an outsider

I read his argument as being about “intangibles.” Yes, Toews is a highly skilled centerman. By the logic of the article, Toews is not unique in being a highly skilled centerman, but he is among a select few.

The argument the article seems to make, and Semi seems to back up, is that if you exchange Toews for another of those elite centers, the overall makeup of the 2010 Cup Winning Hawks was so strong, it wouldn’t matter that you had Elite Centerman X as opposed to Captain Marvel. That team was always going to win with its basic makeup, because it did have elite talent up top, and more depth than any team in recent memory. I’d venture to say more depth than any team in the Cap era.

From the ‘Nucks perspective, the article argues that you don’t need to acquire a specific player, just a player type. And if you do your construction right, it’s the depth and interchangeability of the team that wins a championship.

I disagree with this argument, because I think it does matter who the player is. I think certain players, though they have similar skill sets, simply perform better in the playoffs. For instance, I’d take Datsyuk or Toews over Henrik Sedin or Getzlaf. There’s very little argument that the four of them have comparable skills, but I think the overall two way play, the post-season pedigree and the discipline set Datsyuk and Toews above Sedin or Getzlaf. I’d obviously LOVE to have any one of the four, but if I did have a choice BETWEEN the four, then I would certainly have preferences. It’s nice to have a deck, but sometimes, your ace has to be the better ace.

Campoli's definitely not out

He should take up, conservatively, $2.5 mil. That leaves $1.4 mil, but also remember that this is for a 24-man roster. Someone will have to be sent packing, either to Rockford or another team, thereby creating more space.

For off-season trades, I’d imagine at least one roster player going the other way, creating more available space for anybody coming back in return.

For deals near the trade deadline, that $1.4 million (or however much it is) becomes worth more because we’d only be paying a prorated amount of the new contract(s).

Frolik had no other options save going back to Europe if he didn’t like it. He would have been playing for a contract in a year where the Hawks think they could win the Stanley Cup, it would get the best out of him….and Stan would have a bigger body of work to look at before dumping a long term contract on him.

The more I think about it, the more I wonder why Stan felt he had to give him 3.

23 includes Campoli

if Campoli costs $2 million, there should still be about $2.7 kicking around with a 23-man roster.

So, if the Hawks add someone, they’ll clear out another $0.5 million in space at least, which means, assuming a reasonable Campoli signing, they have > $3 million to spend on someone else without getting rid of Rusty.

Caps re-sign Alzner
Jeff Marek
Caps re-sign Karl Alzner. 2-year deal.

Alzner is good at hockey

Alzner and Carlson

I’m a fan of both.

Apparently 2 years @ $1.3M AAV

Caps are pulling horseshoes out of their ass left and right this off-season.

the folks over at Japer's Rink

say that this cap hit was at least half of what they were expecting

Why can’t Bowman pull off any of the black magic that Sather and McPhee seem to be capable of?

No need, if they don't agree beforehand I guarantee that Alzner's contract is brought up in arbitration

UFA deals may not be admissible as evidence, but other RFA deals sure as shit are and Alzner signing for a $1.3 million cap hit sure as shit favors the ‘Hawks in terms of what have comparable RFA’s gotten from other teams this summer…

They're probably the best team in the east

And they honestly do have a great shot at the cup now, as funny as that may sound. Yeah, they’ve been great the past few years, but they’ve gotten much better and I can see players taking a smaller paycheck for a legitimate chance at the cup.

There are way too many disappearing acts on that team, coach included, for me to take them seriously.

Not to mention they feed off the SE division. They’re highly talented bum slayers.

Living in DC

I’ve seen enough of all 3 teams to say confidently that after they moves they’ve pulled this summer I’d put all of my money on the Caps against either one of those 2 teams without any hesitation.

Apparently we haven't signed Fro
ChrisKuc
The report that the #Blackhawks have signed winger Michael Frolik is not accurate. Source says sides are moving closer to deal, however.

Jesse Rogers tweets it too
ESPNChiHawks
Frolik has not signed or agreed to terms but hearing getting closer..makes sense since at convention…maybe semantics but not signed
