Dear Stan Bowman

Good to talk again

Hey dude. Maybe I shouldn't call you dude. Either way, it's been a while since we talked. You've had to work this summer, I have not, some guys get all the breaks. Anyway, I figured it was time to chime back in.

Generally, I've fired these off when fans and/or myself are just angry about something. But that's not fair. You should know when we think you've done well, too. Interest of fairness and all that. And this is one of those times.

It started iffy though, didn't it? I was pretty fuming about your trade of Brian Campbell, and I made no secret of that. But I understood, and held out final judgement to see what you did with the newfound cap space. You seem to have an awful lot invested in Nick Leddy, maybe you know more than I do, I don't know, we'll see. I was also a little flummoxed at your indifference to Troy Brouwer, which was a player and role you didn't have a replacement for. And he didn't sign for that much, really. But hey, a bonus first-round pick for a player that in all honesty flattered to deceive a lot of his time here. Not the end of the world. And we'll see what Phillip Danault becomes.

But as the summer rolled on, you got better. You needed a defenseman, and you didn't wait for July 1. You went out and got the one that fitted what you needed perfectly in Steve Montador. Size, snarl, solidity, he brings it all. Yeah, he may be getting overpaid just slightly, but this is what happens in the unrestricted market. No complaints there.

July 1 was another subtle work of intelligence. You didn't commit to anyone for more than one year. Low-risk, and possibly high-reward with Andrew Brunette. Hands around the net that Brouwer didn't always have, Buff only promised briefly, and no one else has. He'll flourish here. Carcillo is a risk, but he's not paid much and is only on a one year deal. And he gives you something you didn't have, energy on the 4th line. We'll see, could be worth it, could not be. But I'm willing to see. Sean O'Donnell was also what you were screaming out for, another veteran presence and voice. Well done there.

But you saved the best for last week. You brought Michael Frolik back at a sensibly, though tad high number. He's pretty central to what you want to do. And then the big pimp hand to Chris Campoli. This Sami Lepisto may be your shrewdest move. A bottom-feeding contract for a blueliner who was sneaky good two years ago in Phoenix and will get a lot more freedom here.

You've got your goaltender locked in, and a solid blue line with more depth than you actually had in 09-10. Sure, there's a couple questions on the forward corps, but ones that can be answered internally. And if they can't, you've got midseason flexibility to answer them externally. You haven't had that before. I'm impressed.

So well done Stan, I think for the most part you've made Hawks fans very excited about the upcoming season. That's all you can do in the summer. Anyway, take a break. You've earned it. We'll talk again in the fall.

Sam

I know it’s been a long time since I wrecked ya cliff, but I was hella busy. What with getting my Festiva out of the impound lot, and overcoming poisoning from these weird saurkraut hot dogs I ate last week at that shitty place on Halstad. Amazing how much the Onion has grown when you think about it. For a long time it was just Madison newspaper that made fun of Wisconsin and Northern Illinois. It was like this for years, it wasn’t until it moved to Chicago and Milwaukee recently that it spread all over the place.

Be careful what you wish for

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=532367

NHL’s CBA ends at the end of this year. You’d think that they would do everything possible to avoid a lockout but crazier things have happened. You’ve got a cash starved league with a few teams making tons of dough.

This article doesn’t paint a very pretty picture

http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2011/07/04/kelly-mcparland-the-hockey-league-that-good-sense-forgot/

I might actually start a fan post on this, it would be interesting to see what people think. I’ve noticed that many are unaware of the situation. I was myself until recently.

by 815Sox on Jul 20, 2011 11:00 AM CDT up reply actions

to be clear

“tons of dough” = lots of money compared to other NHL teams. On the grand scheme of things, this is not all that much compared to other sports teams. I heard on the radio that more people actually watch the US v Mexico Copa America match than any of last years SC finals games. Which isn’t all that surprising but puts things into perspective.

by 815Sox on Jul 20, 2011 12:58 PM CDT up reply actions

eh, this guy is a cut-rate version of Larry Brooks

from the NY Post, when he constantly blamed ONLY the owners for the lockout. Sports salaries are ridiculous by nature and it would be worrisome if there was some saber rattling going on but there really isn’t. Obviously, nothing is guaranteed but things are no where near as dire as this guy’s painting it. Not to mention he almost immediately contradicts himself when he says the free agent days and draft days were “decidedly” boring, when his whole point is contracts are spiraling out of control due to owners’ stupidity. His criticisms come from a personal point of view, too. That whole “if I was GM” sort of thinking doesn’t give you a real good sense of objectivity. For instance, he mentions that none of the Panthers’ 8 new players would amount to top line players. That’s ridiculous! At the very least, it’s a subjective observation.

There’s a lot to parse here so I won’t go into it more than that. Suffice to say, we should be wary for signs of ownership and league complaints but the fact that the cap has gone up every year and pulled the cap floor up to above the original salary cap as well means cost certainty is not going to be the issue. And that was the mother of all issues in 2004. There are going to be arguments, for sure, about cap circumventing contracts, etc. but both sides are coming to the end of this CBA with much cooler heads.

by jhb on Jul 20, 2011 1:09 PM CDT up reply actions

Just to be clear

The cap ceiling and floor are specifically determined by the craziest formula I have ever seen in the CBA. While I don’t know how much it will be argued about, there will probably be a fair amount of fight over that calculation and they will almost certainly have to do something about the floor. It’s getting to the point to where Columbus would have to win the cup with a salary at the floor to make a profit even with profit sharing.

The NHL is not in a great situation with a lot of teams barely breaking even, a fair number losing money, and a very select few turning profits. I think their negotiations will be more like the NFL than the NBA, but I wouldn’t exactly say things look good for an easy deal either. Although, the TV deal had to help somewhat.

Toews and Kane should only get better ...

Having them enter their prime should help cover the other offensive holes. I picked Kane to break 100 points last year and, even though he only pulled down a 1.0 ppg, would again this year. Hossa should still be good for around a point a game too, as long as he can play a full season. A 30/45 year from him would go a long way.

by Billy Charlesbois on Jul 18, 2011 6:14 PM CDT reply actions

So I'm guessing this gets Sam back on Stan's Christmas card list?

Good summary, Sam. I think I’m even more excited at the prospect of our young core guys being very hungry after getting knocked out in the first round this year. “Fitness” has been bandied about quite a bit this offseason, and it looks like our boys will come back ready to prove something. I’m also excited to see that the other “top” teams in the West don’t seem to have improved greatly (on paper, at least) though the Kings could be difficult. (And what of our favorite team to hate, the Nucks? Are they still the top of the conference? They seem to think so…) So now we wait. Only 82 days to go…..(sigh)

Thank you Boston for saving us from a dreadful summer! Now, GO HAWKS!!!

Still not completely sold on Soupy moving to FLA

But I cannot argue or complain about the D-Men now either, just hope Soupy puck handling and movement will not be missed much. If it is not missed or adjusted to, I really cannot complain about this off season. The Hawks have allot of room to work with for resigning Shooter, and can make a bold move or two during the first 70 games to fill any glaring holes in the team, something they could not do recently in the past couple years.

Brouwer, meh, whatever, Campi would have been nice, but sure see ya. We will see how it goes.

I agree with you on Soupy..

but StanBo probably realized that it would only get more difficult to move him going forward. The stars aligned perfectly to move him, lots of teams needing to get to the cap floor, and Tallon taking over a team. Hopefully Sami and Leddy can move the puck well enough.

by howiehandles on Jul 18, 2011 8:40 PM CDT reply actions

Here's hoping they figure out how to play without Soupy

I’m a bit scared, our record when he went down last year and the year before took a bit of a dip. I think Lepisto and Leddy will be alright though. It’s a new team that we are going to have to get used to.

that theory is actually wrong

someone crunched the numbers and i think the PPG avg difference without soup was like .2 less.

by putmeinthemadhouse on Jul 19, 2011 12:58 AM CDT up reply actions

Soupy is great but IMO, the biggest problem when he was injured

was that the Hawks were otherwise so thin on D that everything went to hell. Keith and Seabs had to play too much, Boynton had to play (period) — they didn’t have the kind of guys they have now. Soupy will be missed, but his absence shouldn’t be as glaring as it was at the beginning of last season. I hope.

by flahawkfan on Jul 19, 2011 5:48 AM CDT up reply actions

I think you're dead on here - when the minutes go too far over 20, bad things happen

And with 8 defensemen, Stan agrees too.
Keith starts to have senior moments, etc.
Campbell was a big help with trapping teams, so I will nerviously look forward to the first Nashville game as a litmus test.

by FrankStallone on Jul 19, 2011 8:21 AM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

In my opinion the ‘Hawks struggles when Soupy was injured to start last season subsequently followed by the defense shoring up on his return showed not so much the importance of Soupy but rather the ’Hawks complete lack of depth on the blue line. When your 3rd pairing is pick 2 of John Scott, Nick Boynton, and Jassen Cullimore then you’re kinda fucked. While I appreciate everything that Soupy brought to the ‘Hawks over the last 3 seasons and I’m sorry to see him go, the fact is that even without him the blue line is far deeper and better than it was last season with the additions of Montador, O’Donnell, and Lepisto. The ‘Hawks now have 7 NHL-caliber defensemen (and John Scott) and it doesn’t whether the 3rd pairing is Montador-Lepisto, Montador-O’Donnell, or O’Donnell-Lepisto because either way it’s a pairing that can reliably play 15 minutes a night and thus not force Kieth and Seabrook to play 30.

There are three types of people in this world: those who can count, and those who can't.

by FrankStallone on Jul 19, 2011 8:20 AM CDT up reply actions

Of course, the D becomes just as susceptible if Hjammer has the same first half this season as he did last, and if Leddy suffers a decline or can’t step up. But that’s just pessimism, right?

www.mjt.org

by ChicoMaki on Jul 19, 2011 8:27 AM CDT up reply actions

yup, that's just pessimism

but even if one of those does happen – whether it’s Hjammer struggling or Leddy taking a massive step back – the ‘Hawks should still be able to absorb the blow without too much damage because of the previously-mentioned 7 NHL-caliber defensemen signed. What it boils down to is that even without Soupy I’m feeling pretty confident that the ’Hawks blueline will, overall, be significantly better than it was last year

Over his head, like, more than Turco was? I have faith that Salak can help the Hawks at least finish in the top 4 of the West. He doesn’t have to be awesome – just serviceable. 1 more win in the 2010-11 campaign, and the Hawks have the 7 seed instead of the 8. Huge difference, of course.

I'm thinking we might be a bit spoiled.

Huet was more than servicable behind The Bulin road block, even though he was supposed to be the starter anyway. Game 5 against scum was a freaking revelation. Nemo came in and stole Frenchies thunder the next year, and last year Crow freaked the fuck out when he got his shot…our backups have been at least 2 legit.

I think you're somewhat right that we've been a bit spoiled

insomuch as the ‘Hawks have entered the last 2 seasons with a veteran starter and a rookie back-up pegged as a or “the” starter of the future. The ’Hawks have just gotten really lucky that both times, when the veteran has faltered, the rookie has stepped up and shown that he’s ready to take on the challenge of being an NHL starting goalie earlier than we thought he would be. We now enter the 3rd straight year where the back-up (at least the guy who’s penciled in to be the back-up as of now) is a promising rookie who’s pegged to be a future starter, the difference is that the guy pegged to be the opening night starter is neither a massively overpaid and not-that-good vet (Huet) or a past-his-prime, 1-year-only stop-gap (Turco).

Hold on just a moment

Vernon played 11 seasons in Calgary (8 full seasons as the starter) and backstopped them to the Cup in ‘88-’89 before going to Detroit and is currently the winningest HOF-eligible goalie to not be in the hall. Was Vernon out of this world? No. But he wasn’t exactly an unknown or out-of-left-field guy when the Scum brought him in

I have to disagree with this
that same hardly known Crawford kid who couldn’t beat out an undrafted free agent

Crawford was always in “the system” (draftwise, in the AHL, etc) ahead of Niemi, who was actually more of an unknown quantity— the differences were slimmer when it simply came down to the Org picking a rookie backup goalie for a playoff-hopeful season, Niemi was picked for salary reasons.

by docks on Jul 20, 2011 3:42 PM CDT up reply actions

The main reason that Niemi was picked over Crawford

to back-up Huet in ‘09-’10 was purely contractual. Being a year older Niemi would have had to clear waivers in order to be sent down to Rockford whereas Crawford did not. My understanding is that, at the time, the ‘Hawks were of the opinion that Niemi and Crawford were fairly equal both in ability and in future potential, and they went with Niemi over Crawford purely because they knew that it was unlikely for Niemi to clear waivers without being claimed by another team whereas they didn’t have to worry about losing Crawford in that manner.

Oh yeah, not denying that the Scum basically lucked into him

I don’t remember it that well because I was only like 10 or 11 when he was traded to the Scum so I may be mistaken, but I remember a lot of people thinking he was basically done already when he signed arrived in Detroit and he clearly proved them wrong when he led them to 2 SCF appearances (1 win) in his 2 1/2 years there and won the Conn Smythe in ’97

Goalies

I’m kind of surprised we haven’t signed someone. It’s a not talked about much, but with the drastic changes on our blue line it seems to me that an injury to Crawford becomes that much more ominous.

I’m really kind of surprised that we haven’t signed someone who could take on extended duty if need be. I mean, Salak could be that guy, but a good stint through 30-some games in the SEL hardly sells me on the idea that he’s the guy to start if Crawford goes down.

Thank god for flexibility right?

I’m perfectly content to go into the season with Salak backing up. If Crow goes down we get to see what he can do. If he fails there will still be a veteran or two out there lurking. Those are two pretty big ifs and I’m not ready to sacrifice a potential trade mid-season for the sole purpose of having 3 NHL goalies on the roster.

I agree, I’m happy to see him as our back-up to begin. But IF Crawford goes down and Salak proves sketchy in relief, I don’t want to be forced to choose from whatever UFA just happens to be available at the time. Seems way more prudent to devote 1 or 1.5 million right now. Just my opinion.

But then I’m also of the opinion that Bowman, Bergevin, Quenneville, Kitchen, and Haviland all know more about Salak, and hockey, than I do.

Salak

Salak played in the AHL two years ago. He went back to the SEL because of the Panthers incredible depth at goalies. If the Panthers didn’t have that depth, Salak most likely would have played in the NHL last year.

It is Salak’s time to get a shot. He is a player that played an extra year in a lower league. He is NOT a guy that has been rushed. At some point you just have to give the kids a chance…

by DaleHalas on Jul 19, 2011 9:02 AM CDT up reply actions

It's kind of funny that you're talking about the Panther's incredibly goalie depth

and yet they’re going into next season with Jose Theodore penciled in as the starter. I’m by no means saying that you’re wrong about them having had great depth, especially since Vokoun was the clear-cut starter, I just think it’s amusing how that depth has so clearly eroded

There are three types of people in this world: those who can count, and those who can't.

Panthers goalies

Tomáš Vokoun in the NHL last year and I’m kinda thinking it will be Jacob Markstrom’s turn this year, Theodore as the backup. And I can’t remember who the third was but Salak was somewhere around 4th goalie in that organization.

In the Hawks system he would have been the top minor league goalie last year and there are all kinds of people out there who think he is better then Crawford. It will be fun to watch next year.

As of right now, Markstrom is technically 3rd on their depth chart

behind Theodore and Scott Clemmensen. Markstom is in all likelihood a fair amount better than Clemmensen already, but it made more sense to keep Markstrom in the AHL to get starts last year instead of having him back up Vokoun and thus rarely see the ice. This year he’s probably perfectly capable of beating out Jose Theodore or at the very least giving the Panthers a reason to carry him as the back-up to start the season instead of Clemmensen.

There are three types of people in this world: those who can count, and those who can't.

by FrankStallone on Jul 19, 2011 11:10 AM CDT up reply actions

Hey Frank,

You never want to just hand the starting job to a rookie but I don’t see anyway that the Panthers made the moves they did without them expecting Markstrom to be this year’s starter.

They are seriously under the cap but Vokoun walked away for a 1.5M contract? If there were any doubts in the organization that Markstrom wasn’t ready I really believe they would have anti-ed up for Vokoun for another year. I just don’t see them literally pushing Vokoun out of the way if this wasn’t Markstrom’s year. I just don’t see them doing that to Vokoun for Theodore…

by DaleHalas on Jul 19, 2011 2:04 PM CDT up reply actions

I don't disagree with your analysis of Florida's current goaltending situation

but I think you’re conveniently ignoring or forgetting how the Vokoun UFA market / contract situation actually played out. Florida DID want Vokoun back, their last offer to him was $10 million over 4 years which as it happens to have turned out is 3 years a $1 million AAV more than he actually signed for in Washington. This was before July 1 when Florida still had exclusive negotiating rights and he turned it down because a) he thought he was going to command more money – remember, most analysts were predicting his being signed for an AAV north of $5 million, and b) after years of being the far-and-away best player on some pretty miserable Florida teams he wanted to go someplace where he’d have a chance to win (which is why his being connected to Colorado initially was puzzling, maybe he doesn’t realize that Sakic and Forsberg are retired?). What it boils down to is that they didn’t “push Vokoun out of the way” – Vokoun’s departure from the Panther’s appears to have nothing to do with the Panthers wanting to move on and/or hand off the torch to Markstrom and everything to do with Vokoun wanting to play elsewhere.

So then the question becomes what happens this year? Theodore seems like a stopgap a la Marty Turco in Chicago last year, but the difference is that he’s signed for 2 years, not 1, and the Panthers also have a career back-up (Clemmensen) for one more year @ $1.5 million. The only way the Panthers can justify burying Clemmensen in the AHL and eating his 1-way contract is if they believe that they’re a playoff team this year, but anyone looking objectively can see that despite all of their off-season moves they’re still only the 4th or 5th best team in their division. The intelligent move (and this isn’t to say it’s what they’ll do) would be to let Markstrom continue to develop by being the starter in the AHL while Theodore is backed up by Clemmensen in the NHL and then in 2012-’13 when Clemmensen is gone and the team has continued to improve go with a goaltending tandem of Theodore (in a contract year) and Markstrom (rookie trying to make a name for himself)

There are three types of people in this world: those who can count, and those who can't.

by FrankStallone on Jul 19, 2011 2:55 PM CDT up reply actions

Agreed

The Panthers will let Markstrom get another full season as a starter in the AHL, and then bring him up next year. At least that’s the most likely scenario imo.

Does everyone have to stop talking about the “Red Wings Model” if he makes the HOF? A puck possession team with a dominant defense who can get away with having a low-paid average goalie (Osgood) because their team is so good. Isn’t the whole premise the “low paid average goalie” part? Wasn’t Osgood the low-paid average goalie? Now he is automatic HOF? Im confused.

That’s pretty good. I don’t think he’s an auto-inductee, but his career merits a close look IMO. The longevity will help him, as will the win totals and cups. The negatives will surely be the overal team dominance displayed by the Wings and the fact that he was never a 70+ game starter. Talented team or not, his 39 wins in 50 games played (95-96) was pretty phenomenal. I think a lot of it will be determined by which other goalies are on the ballot with him at the same time.

He's Olaf Kolzig on a better team.

Is Ollie a HHOF’er? He had a better nickname.

by zacked on Jul 19, 2011 3:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Personally I don't think he's a HOF'er

I was merely pointing out that you can make a reasonable case for his inclusion. I would also say his career is more HOF worthy than Kolzig’s. 15 years as a #1 (or 1a) to Kolzig’s 10. Osgood’s 400 wins to Kolzig’s 300 etc.

For me, the main reason Osgood isn’t a HOF’er is because when I think of his goaltending “era”, I always think of Brodeur (94-2011), Hasek (93-08), Belfour (90-07), Joseph (90-07), and Roy (86-03) ahead of him. I know Roy is a bit of a stretch with his career ending 8 years ago but a good chunk of his time was spent head-to-head with Osgood. I think Kolzig and Richter were both quite good as well but Zolzig’s body of work isn’t as impressive and Richter had a short lights out period but was otherwise fairly average or injured.

Looking at the guy’s I’ve mentioned I would argue he’s had a better career than Kolzig or Richter which puts him 5 guys (4 auto HOF’ers).

As in, if you always drive a manual transmission, driving an automatic is so easy, it’s like magic! – it’s (wait for it…) AUTOMAGIC.

There really shouldn't be a debate

Osbad NEVER won a Vezina.

If you cannot be the best goalie in the league for even ONE year, you’re not worthy of the Hall of Fame. He belong in the Hall-of-Decent-But-Had-One-The-Best-D-Men-Ever-Saving-His-Ass.

It’s in Flint, Michigan.

Chicagoan in the Lou.

by Mike Martin on Jul 19, 2011 5:34 PM CDT up reply actions

Gary Cheevers NEVER won a Vezina

He’s in the hall. The two are fairly comparable IMO. Cheevers backstopped a dynamite Bruins team in the 70’s (minus his few seasons in the WHA) and Osgood did the same thing.

Besides, the fact that Jim Carrey won the Vezina in ‘96 over Osgood was some weird joke (an .830 win% doesn’t get you the trophy?). How’d Carrey’s career go over? By your logic he should be considered for the hall because he won a Vezina.

Anyways, I’m finding myself defending Osgood which I don’t really feel like doing anymore. There are something like 29 goalies in the HOF (including Belfour) and I have to figure Brodeur and Hasek are locks when they come up for vote. That alone probably precludes Joseph, Richter, Kolzig, Barrasso, Osgood, etc…

by M7 on Jul 19, 2011 5:58 PM CDT up reply actions

Not familiar with the Vezina?

The Vezina wasn’t the same award as it is today back then. Then it was based on the TEAM who allowed the fewest goals in a season, with the award going to the goalie who started the most games on that team. It was changed to the current format in 1982. Guess who retired in 1980?

Also, I never said or implied it was the ONLY criteria for induction- but it should be something considered. His career SV% is only .905, while the league-wide average was also .906. And again, he managed weak numbers while playing behind some of the best defense in the league. He’s a slightly above average goalie who played on a REALLY good team. If we’re giving out HOF inductions for guys who played on winning teams, Kirk Malby is HOF bound!

Chicagoan in the Lou.

by Mike Martin on Jul 19, 2011 6:48 PM CDT up reply actions

I agree, in part

Vezina should certainly be looked at, but I think it’s overrated as a measuring stick. Example: Brodeur’s 1st win (‘02-’03) came in a year when Turco crushed the rest of the league, statistically. But Brodeur basically won b/c he should have won 2 or 3 times before (and b/c Turco only played 55 games that year, whatever…).

If they had given the award to Turco, it wouldn’t have made him any more HOF worthy. By the same token, if Turco were working on a HOF career (if only…), and Brodeur’s make-up award cost him his only Vezina, I don’t think he’d be any less worthy.

Certainly, there is some merit in the award, and you generally have to be a damn good goalie to be considered, but a lot of times it comes down to “whose saves do we remember the most?”. Hence, Hasek’s 6 trophys…

by tgo909 on Jul 19, 2011 8:52 PM CDT up reply actions

Thank's Mike, yes... I'm totally aware of how that award was given out...

… and how the change in format coincided with the creation of the Jennings.

I could argue you sideways over the merits of that award (in its past format) and the people who won it and how their careers benefited thereafter (I mean evidence would suggest Dryden won most of his because he was playing behind Lemaire, Robinson, Savard and a good collection of forwards).

Kirk Maltby doesn’t have the stats and to me, there is always the question of whether the team made a player (and his numbers good), or if that player was one piece of what made that team great. Bottom line, by modern day criteria, Osgood should have won the ‘96 Vezina (on a team with the best regular season record since the Habs in the 70’s) – but I don’t think he’ll get in based on how few goalies are in the Hall (by era) while realizing that Brodeur/Hasek will chew up any votes Osgood (or Joseph, Kolzig, Richter etc.) may have gotten.

I hope you didn’t feel I was attacking you, just outlining what I can understand as a reasonable argument for his induction to the Hall. Particularly for a Wings fan as intimated in Hjammertime’s original post.

I perused the WIIM thread to get a sense of their thoughts

Seems as though they think there’s a case to be made, based on other goaltenders (i.e. Belfour) who have made it in. I don’t know if I get the auto-magic sense from them, but WIIM seems to have slightly less arrogance than, say, A2Y.

What I do find interesting is that, while they think there’s a case to be made for the Hall, there’s almost NO case for him to have his number retired.

I can actually see the case they’re making (he’s not Howe, Lindsey, Yzerman or Lidstrom), but it sounds funny.

In other RFA news

Dubinsky’s hearing is in 2 days. NYR, with bonuses, are over the cap. Interesting to read the comments on this post.

This is obviously a huge if, but if Dubinsky’s award is more than the Rangers are willing to pay, how aggressive should the Hawks be in acquiring him (in terms of AAV/term)?

by TKHO on Jul 19, 2011 2:36 PM CDT up reply actions

Apparently the big holdup for Dubi is length of contract, not $

he wants longer then he’s getting I guess. Surprising, after this last season in particular, I really thought Dubinsky/Callahan were the future of the organization, so I’m interested to know what length of time is actually being suggested.

Also, arbitration hearings have to be so damn uncomfortable.

This has Jeff Vinnik “give him the money” written all over it.

I mean, I can’t see Steve Yzerman wanting to give Stamkos that much money with $7m guaranteed in signing bonuses over the next 2 years with a cap hit over 5 years with a $7.5m cap hit which is higher than the likes of Ryan Getzlaf, Henrik Zetterberg, Pavel Datsyuk, Ryan Kesler, and our own Jonathan Toews – centre’s that plays BOTH ends of the ice.

Methinks the Lightning may regret this if Boucher is once again forced to shift Stamkos to the 3rd line in playoffs to hide his defensive deficiencies. Then again, he may blossom into a two-way centre, but that seems a little doubtful.

Proud fan of the 2010 Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks and the 2010 Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers.

I think getting Stamkos for 7.5 million is a steal. Sure he’s not as great a two-way center as the players you mentioned, but neither of those players have a 50 goal season on their record, let alone doing it at 20 years old.
