Second City Hockey's Season Preview: Power To The People
It is that time, when we fully gear up for the season to come. All the writers are in the fold, we've done our stretches and warm ups, and we're ready to cinch it up and hunker down for the next eight months, Stone Pony (we hope). With that, it's time to start our season preview.
We did this last year, and we thought it worked pretty well so we're going to try it again. Instead of going player by player, which can get pretty monotonous (and if you want that, I'll be doing it on Madhouse Enforcer anyway), we'd like to pick a question every day that faces the Hawks. And you're going to ask them. Ask us anything about the Hawks 2011-2012 season, and each day we'll pick a question from this thread to help preview the year. It can as serious or silly as you want. Ask us who will eventually end up centering the second line, or ask us which STD Kaner will catch this year. Anything goes. And it starts now. We'll start taking questions now, and all day tomorrow, and our first preview post will be up Wednesday.
So if you could help me out, and have a couple people recommend this fanpost so it gets that exalted place atop the sidebar and can be easily referenced every day. Thanks. Have at it people.

Will Kaner shoot righty and play LW this season?
Using deductive reasoning, we must assume that Kaner has been pleasuring himself with his off/right hand this summer thus developing the strength of Hercules and the dexterity of a lemur’s tail in those digits.
So: Kaner on RW with Tazer and Hossa on LW?

I've never consumed heart before
But I’ve had sole several times, and it is delicious. Usually sautéed and then deboned tableside. Pricey, but good.
Let's Go Hawks!
I think it will be a good measuring stick for the contributions of the bottom two lines. Stats for stat’s sake don’t matter standing on their own, because entering the playoffs is entering the playoffs, gaudy numbers or not (Nashville), but like stated below, it would be interesting to see if he enters the Selke competition with a larger contribution on the offensive end
Two big ones
(1) With Carcillo et al in the mix, the team (as Don Cherry would say) has their “jam” back. This is meaningful, primarily, to meatheads. Is it meaningful to the club? Do the new fourth-liners have it in them to use their aggression sensibly? And how much freedom will the fourth-liners have in a league that might — might — get serious about headshots and blatant goonery?
(2) Your selections for PP and PK units, please. (Include a utility pick in case of injury, suspension, etc.)

Assuming that Marian Hossa is healthy, will his attempt at a return to 40 goals mostly depend on what center he plays with, or have we seen an indelible change to his offensive output in the last two years?
Also
Does Hossa need to approach the 40 goal plateau in order for the team to be successful? (i.e. win the cup)
Are we a deep enough team again to reach that goal if Hossa ‘only’ scores 25-30?

I can answer that one..
Corey has only one weakness, the wicked wrist shot over his left shoulder from the faceoff circle. The hawk coaches have already noted this tendency and are developing a defensive system that makes it almost impossible for the opponents to get a shot off from there.
While the details haven’t been worked out, I heard it involves having both the LW and RW play on that side of the ice. Adjustments may need to be made as teams figure out this strategy, but I think the Hawks will milk it until the cows come home.
In addition it is rumored Mr Big will attach a “Get that weak shit out of here,” sign on his cross bar-strategically placed of course just above his left shoulder.

If Olesz has an honest-to-God decent year
Do the Hawks trade him while stock is high both to obtain a decent 2C & in order to leave space for the AHL young ’uns to grow into their places in the playoffs and coming seasons – given that the most NHL-ready prospects all seem to be wingers – or do they go into the playoffs with the current roster in the most natural/obvious formation (Brunette/Olesz – Toews – Kane, Brunette/Olesz – Sharp – Hossa, etc.) with the knowledge that we have 2 more seasons of Olesz on the books and therefore not much room for prospects to grow into?
I know the answer will depend on how well he plays, so let’s just say “decent” = playing to his salary.

Probably not
At one time the team had this choice to make. Like having Burish or someone like Koci on the team. Team chose the Burish type player. I haven’t seen the Hawks choose the true fighter over the Eager style enforcer. I’m thinking they are more happy with Carcillo/Mayers than Scott.
Honestly I think they play him occasionally just because they spent so much time marketing him last year

4th on the team in points during regular season and 1st in playoffs is invisible now?
Its injuries we should be worried about, not production.
Defender of any poseur or professional pretender
Besides the St. Louis game (and the beginning of october)
Can you remember any big goals he had?
Getting points doesn’t exactly mean too much. Theres a lot of guys out there who feed off secondary assists simply due to the fact 99% of the goals have them these days.
Off my head
Buffalo game at beginning of season potted 2 of our 4 goals. Game winning against the Wings right at the end of the season. There was a Ducks game early on he had a big goal in as well. He logged a ton of ice time in the playoffs and was one of our best players, eye test as well as scoresheet.
But I guess that isn’t the point. I could go on about his ability to stay relevant at all times but everybody knows that. I agree that Hossa did not score at the level his contract demands. He also had a Carlos Quentin-esqe hot/cold thing going on for a lot of this year. But to call him invisible seems harsh in the extreme. He maintained almost a PPG average and would have been right up there with Toews Kane and Sharp had he been played the full schedule My concern lay not with his production, but with his health. He needs to find a way to string together a full season here.

Have largely already been asked, but here’s a few I did not see:
1. Will Keith and Seabrook play together 95%+ of the time this year, or will the Q line generator extend to the blueline too? How will they be split up if they are?
2. Will Michael Frolik score more than 10 goals this year?
3. Who should be the next couple of go-to guys (in order) after Toews/Kane in the skills competition — and who do you think Q will use?
4. Do you think the loss of the third jersey will improve the team’s home record? (I do)
5. What do you think the team’s record has to be for panic to set in and start either seeing guys traded/sent down and/or free agents get signed.

Is this the year Scum miss the playoffs?
I'd like a serious breakdown of last season
Complete with all the minutia from the back of the CI, just a final tally of everything.
And then project those category’s for this season or introduce some new ones.
A true rolling of four lines
will there be one this season? Damn, I’ll take three lines, the Hawks should have that, right?

With Sharp's surgery and the likelihood he will miss at least a couple of games...
What are the odds Brett McClean is on the opening day roster since he’s waivers exempt on the way down, but not re-entry waivers exempt? I’m at 15 to 1. Higher?
I think John Scott will likely still be on the Blackhawks roster if all remains status quo. (I’m gonna write an article on that today. Yes, I’m obviously desperate for material) What are your odds on that?

Brett McClean's contract at Capgeek.
I just got to believe that the info at Capgeek on McClean is wrong. It HAS to be a typo. It makes no sense for either McClean or the team to sign that deal. No player signs a deal that might keep them from coming up to the NHL. Not for 20K.
If that deal is true, however, then yeah I agree, McClean is much more likely to be on the team starting out the year. At least then what was previously thought.
Couple of questions...
1) Do you think we will be able to roll out a 4th line that will consistently slay bums while being responsisble (somewhat) in their own end?
2) Who will the 4th line consist of on the opener and then at mid-season (barring trades, etc)?
3) If Kruger fails to live up to expectations during training camp, do you think Ho-Bo-Fro makes a comeback as Line #2?
4) Over/under on number of games it takes before Q-Stache goes all Happy Gilmore on Stalberg and murders him with a skate?
I don't know if this is kosher given that it's not directly related to the 'Hawks
But who are your top-3 contenders for the Cup this year?
Because a blog of alcoholics just isn't complete without a Scot.

Krueger's Center spot - 2nd, 3rd, or 4th?
While we saw Krueger playing sort-of Center with Ryan Johnson on the 4th line against Vancouver, do you think he’ll ever fit in that spot again with out laughter/rage at TV’s across Chicagoland? Vancouver has more of a 1-a, 1-b, 2 , & 3 line make up, so he was really playing against more of 3rd line comp., so how silly would it be to have him start against a real 4th line?
If you can't be dead, at least be funny.
Late to the party
I think TMFF touched on this briefly but I’ll rehash it since I’m curious.
Given Soupy’s critical puck-carrying abilities in our transition game the past few years, and his leadership qualities during the post-season, how badly are we going to miss Brian Campbell? Is Nick Leddy ready to step up and take that role of moving the puck through the neutral zone? Are the other replacements going to be much help in that department? And how will our offense/defense at even strength be affected?
