Power To The People: Second City Hockey's Season Preview - On Hangovers and Slow Starts
Much like my compatriot Sam, I am working my way into game shape as well. ITunes is on shuffle, the beer is flowing and I'm up writing this tripe rather than going to sleep. Sounds about right. So as I work on creating a hangover of my own for tomorrow's thrilling day at work, we might as well ask a question that could rises due to what we saw last season and that dreaded Stanley Cup Hangover we laughed at all last summer. From JuliaM... wait... who let her out of the windowless room we keep the links people in? Probably Hack...
Will there be a slow start as all the new pieces learn to gel? How slow?
Forgive me if I'm reading into this question a bit much.. but I think we would not spend a minute worrying about this if not for what we saw last year, massive changes and mediocre performances. We're dealing with more changes going into October (sweet Jesus it can't come soon enough) but will the song remain the same?
The idea that the Blackhawks had a slow start to last season is a riddle we haven't exactly solved yet. In fact, looking back on everything I'm not sure it's even all that true. It's pretty undeniable that things didn't work out like we wanted but it may have been a little exageratted by all of us hoping for the reigning Stanley Cup Champs to steamroll right at the first whistle. It reality.. it might not have been as terrible as we all let ourselves believe. At the end of the 2010, the Hawks were 20-16-3. Not what we wanted to be sure but not worth pulling all your hair out. It wasn't really until much later in the season that we really hit what we assumed to be rock bottom.. and thanks to the magic of the internet I can actually tell you the exact date - Feb 18th.
So it wasn't a slow start exactly that nearly sunk the Blackhawks last year. It was a team that never lived up to its expectations and was rarely firing on all cylinders. Now, you could argue that's because we had a team that just never gelled at all... and you may be right. We won't go into the reasons that may be true here because it won't help us too much when checking out the quickly approaching season. Back to the question at hand - will this team have time gelling?
To be perfectly honest - who the fuck knows? Not a great answer, I realize this. But I'll tell you why I'm not concerned - if it was the case that the team last year was in shock from the changes that took place, I think they've learned their lesson. All teams are going to have to deal with changes.. that's simply a fact given the nature of sports today. We said all along last year that we weren't concerned about the changes because the core remained intact. Perhaps we sold it a little short given the high that the boys were riding when they returned to Chicago as heroes. It's still no excuse for the lazy disinterested play we saw far too often though and perhaps the wake up call of getting into the playoffs only by default was able to shock their systems.
So lets just assume last year's team lacked the needed chemistry, why are the changes going into this year any different? Well for one they don't come to a team that was obviously incredibly tight both on and off the ice. I can only imagine how close you get to a teammate throughout the grueling fight that is the NHL playoffs. So maybe they didn't lose just teammates but good friends instead. Fine.. whatever. Emo crybabies..
The changes from the 10-11 team to the 11-12 then aren't anywhere near as drastic. There's the loss of Campbell which is obviously a major loss both on and off the ice but that's the only thing I see as a potential stumbling block coming into the new season. The Hawks will have to work to replace one of the best skaters not just on the team but perhaps in the entire league. No easy task. The hopeful return of Duncan Keith, who seemed lost in the ether, and the work-in-progress that is Nick Leddy ought to help though. The defense is still deep but it will be different. The rest of the changes are among guys that are simply.. guys. Sure Kopecky and Brouwer were on the cup team but I fail to see anything they do that guys like Brunette, Montador or O'Donnell can't do just as well.
Different shouldn't mean we see the same ennui we did last year though. Even dynasty teams see changes year to year these days. There's going to be a learning period, sure. You can't throw a bunch of random guys together and expect them to immediately click but that's not going to mean we can't expect the team to start strong. It's not as if the Hawks are the only ones dealing with changes. These are the times when the core of the team really has to step it up and lead the way, something they failed to do consistently last year. If that happens again, perhaps it's time for other changes but for now I don't see it being the problem it was last year.
We've actually already touched on one aspect that I think will help this team. The (please dear god) lack of a goalie controversy. Marty Turco was a great experiment. It was a shame it didn't work. I still hold the belief though that he sadly didn't get the kind of support or level of play in front of him that he deserved. For whatever reason, the team playing in front of Turcs was pretty drastically different than the one in front of Crawford. Not saying Turco was blameless but the team responded better with the Mouseketeer in net. This year we can be pretty sure that Crawford is the number one and the team knows how to play with him in the crease. I think this may be one of the biggest advantages over last year.
It goes without saying of course that it would be nice if Q were to show some consistency with his lines and let them work it out for a few games rather than throwing names into the air and seeing where they land.. but you and I both know that's not going to happen, right?
So I don't see the new lineup as a reason for a slow start.. it's something every team has to deal with and one that a good team like the Hawks shouldn't use as an excuse. Lets hope it's lesson learned from last year.

Re: Turco
Could it be that perhaps having played with Crow in the A our younger guys were more comfortable with him backstopping them? I seem to remember the team playing better in front of Niemi than Huet, and this was thrown out as a possibility then as well.

Maybe the team played better with Crawford in goal because they actually could win with him in goal and not allow 3 goals or more in every start.
Turco was a failed experiment. It’s O.K. for everyone to admit to this and to move on and focus on what Emery or Salak can bring to the table in 2011-2012.
I think it will be better.

You and I were on the same page with respect to Turco throughout the season. However, one thing I noticed about the Hawks last season and in the championship season is that they seemed to play much better D in front of their young goalies. It seemd as if they worked harder and were protecting the rookies while in their minds it wasn’t necessary to do play that frenzied D when the older more experienced net minders were on the ice.
Thank you, sir! May I have another?
You know what Turco's problem was?

Think it might've been a style thing
If you follow the Goalie Guild (http://thegoalieguild.com/), he does a lot of goalie scouting and he talks about the importance of how a goalie’s play radiates out to the rest of the team. Is the goalie “emo” in net after giving up a goal? (ie. throwing out their arms, banging their stick around, etc) Or is the goalie clearly resetting himself for the next play? If we as fans look at a goalie and think, “Jeez, we never know what we’re going to get out of him in net”, imagine what the players feel like.
Turco’s hybrid style worked for him for Dallas for many years. Huet played a similar style and we can see how the Blackhawks did in front of him; so can’t say I’m entirely surprised about how they played in front of Turco last year. Niemi might’ve had an unorthodox stance/style – there were times he looked downright awkward in net – but he was pretty calm/centered overall. Crawford has worked hard on his technique and it shows – he, too, used to be a bit “emo” in the net in Rockford, but he seems to have kicked that habit by the time he hit the NHL full-time. It’s easy to feel very reassured as a player when you’re standing in front of a goalie who plays like Crawford.
Turco was an excellent mentor for Crawford, supportive of the team, and despite being edged out, he never stopped being very positive and a great team guy. Hope he lands well somewhere.

HockeyBroad, I think you nailed it on why I wasn’t fan of his in Rockford. I didn’t think at the time that he had the mental fortitude to thrive in the NHL.
Numerous times last season and this summer I commented on how Crow really grew up last year. That’s exactly it (plus some awesome rookie stats didn’t hurt). Good point.

What I remember being said about Turco was how he was going to feed our speeding forwards the puck
He was supposed to be a third puck moving defenseman back there. Remember all the breakout passes that were going to happen because of him? I think the team played with an attitude of “protecting” Crow and letting Marty alone back there. Often, that meant leaving him out to dry. Of course, Turco’s style (known as “the style that Luongo DOESN’T play and therefore stops more pucks”) of coming out of the net more and being WAY more erratic in his positioning didn’t help matters.
All that being said, Crawford is much calmer back there.
Thank you Boston for saving us from a dreadful summer! Now, GO HAWKS!!!
This
I think the team played with an attitude of "protecting" Crow
Yep, that’s my observation too. They did the same for Neemo.
Thank you, sir! May I have another?
I also remember people citing Turco's ability to play the puck as a positive
but I think that style ended up messing up the way our D plays more than benefiting it. Turco would want to come out to play the puck, but then one of the D would already be on their way back to retrieve the puck and it became one of those awkward moments when you run into someone and you’re not sure who should go right and who should go left so the two of you have that moment of “uh, you first?” before a decision is made & then you move on.
Crow, on the other hand, let the D do what they were used to doing – everything.

I think Crow's size helps a little bit as well
The guy looks huge back there, and his athleticism and usually sound positioning really makes that goal area look smaller – perhaps it was mostly Turco’s weird positioning that made the open areas around the goal mouth look like yawning chasms at times.
he also started more games in the season.
We usually attribute people’s poor stats to playing with turco (Keith gets this a lot), but there could also be some reciprocity in that regard;Turco’s odd style + teammates that are already not cohesive and are a little jumpy = total disaster.
It was a lot of things.
Turco really wasn’t technically sound a good deal of the time. He often was out of position, didn’t have great rebound control, tried to do too much, and was generally “loose.” It wasn’t close. And while the team may have reacted differently at the beginning of the year due to “confidence level with the guy behind us,” that quickly became a non issue after multiple games.
Crow did the little things that mattered much better.

IF they start slow, I'll worry just a smidge.
Because I don’t expect them to at all. But I think I’d have to define “slow start” too. Meaning, we’re losing to teams we shouldn’t be losing to at the start of the season. The first two months of the schedule feature exactly 11 games of 25 against teams that made the playoffs last year. Two of those are against PHX who is going to regress (probably big time) this season, 2 are against the Ducks who will still rely on their top line more than they should have to and 1 is against the Kings who, speaking of problems gelling, they will have a handful of their own.
The Hawks play a relatively easy schedule in the first two months of the season. Lots of Blues, Jackets, Stars, Avs, Oilers and Flames games. They should rack up some points in those tilts. They get the Canucks twice and then one game each of SJ, BOS, TBL, and NSH. Those will be some games to watch and see how they fair against the higher competition. Hell, even into December we’ve only got 3 games that really jump out in PIT (who knows about 87’s health), SJ again and our first meeting with SCUM to close 2011.
I don’t anticipate a slow start to 2011-12. There are new parts, yes, but many of them are veteran pieces and not below replacement players like we had skating last year (that guy in the picture missing a big white tall hat). Having a returning backstop that fits our system better than Marty did last year (despite the breakout passes we all thought we’d see from him) and that gives me a lot more confidence. The rest, while providing worries of rust, will be primarily beneficial to the Hawks roster.
Consider me not concerned about that smidge of worry as I don’t think a “slow start,” however we categorize it, is in the cards.

" Watch the Blackhawks and Edmonton Oilers return to action, ONLY ON CHICAGOBLACKHAWKS.COM! Join WGN Radio’s John Wiedeman and Troy Murray as they call Chicago’s preseason opener, live from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan!"
Due to NHL broadcast restrictions, the Blackhawks-Oilers preseason game will only be available in the Edmonton and Chicago metropolitan areas.
What, exactly, does this mean? That city folk will be able to watch the game? Or will it be broadcasted locally while us non residents can watch the stream? Please excuse my ignorance.

But you can’t choose where the proxy IP is, so sometimes you need to turn it off & on a few times. So it might take a while to get to either Chicago or Edmonton.

AFAIK they aren't illegal
Hotspot Shield says it’s for privacy, but I think it does that so it has a legitimate excuse for what it does. Basically, all it does is tell websites you’re from somewhere else. So, for instance, if I want to watch The Daily Show online but can’t because it’s blocked online in Britain, all I need to do is use a proxy which is in the US which then relays the information to me so that I can watch the show.

(*The calculation predicted 96 pts, but due to the fact the Hawks were close to moving up an SRS bracket I suggested it was more likely they ended up with 97-99)

What a coincidence
I was just viewing those a few minutes ago. I’m a fan of the behind the back shot myself.
By the end of November
the Hawks play 25 games. After looking at the schedule I would say anything less than 14 wins would be a slow start. Unless they decide to lose all their games to Edmonton and Calgary.

actually,
looks like most of their stuff is at least decent. everything is B+ or better on BA.
Just saw that someone found it in Austin, so hopefully we start seeing their stuff in San Antonio. Any new stuff is greatly welcomed. Fucking sucks down here for beer. :(
Yeah.. but BA kinda sucks
It’s a big meh in my book. It’s not horrible but it’s not great stuff either.
So what are the big breweries in TX? Perhaps we could organize a trade..
