Downtown Trains Are Full - Morning Links (9/19)
Saturday kicked off the Blackhawks Training Camp Festival with practices and two fifty-minute scrimmages, in which Duncan Keith played like he was saving orphaned children from mustachioed villains and Nick Leddy showed several very reassuring flashes. The relatively solid play of Ray Emery and Alexander Salak also had my house breathing a little easier. However, a couple days of camp practices are hardly sufficient to judge future performance, whether it be Duncan "Rested" Keith, or Rostislav Olesz, who was. . .well, he was.
The pre-season match against Edmonton on Tuesday should shine a little more light on the strengths and weaknesses of this group, but until then, no reason for pessimism. It's a new season. Let's Go Hawks.
- Patrick Sharp looks to be back by opening night. [Chicago Tribune]
- Olesz isn't going anywhere, at least for the foreseeable future. [CSNChicago] [Sun-Times]
- Pierre LeBrun's camp tour checks in with Duncan Keith, presses the "rested" theory. [ESPN]
- Then interviews Corey Crawford, who refuses to have a sophomore slump. [ESPN]
- TTMI has a wrap of Saturday. [Third Man In]
- Jeremy Morin took the ice on Sunday and seems to be healing. [ESPNChicago] [CSNChicago]
- Sami Lepisto loves Chicago; Dan Carcillo is frustrated with his play, does what he does. [Chicago Tribune]
- Patrick Kane scrimmages, scores two. [Sun-Times] [Trib]
- Ray Emery's ready to battle for the back-up spot. [Sun Times] [Trib]
- Marian Hossa should get into town on Tuesday after attending services for Pavol Demitra. He and his wife also recently had a baby. [CSNChicago]

Shaw can take comfort that at least Carcillo thought him worthy to drop with.
Bollig challenged him the other day and Carcillo declined. After declining Bollig, he unintentionally dissed him pretty hard “I had a few offers. Some guy who starts with a B.”

completely agree - new season >>> repeats of 2011 playoffs
I’m just saying that certain replays are more fun to watch than others, like the Cannots completely imploding over the last 2 games of the SCF

Let’s not put too much (as in, any) credence into “insight” from Tab.
Sami Lepisto wasn’t impressive at all. If Saturday’s action determined the depth chart for the season opener, Lepisto would be your sixth or seventh defenseman.
Really Tab? 6th or 7th on the depth chart? Not ahead of Keith, Seabs, Hjammer, Leddy, or Monty? Way to go out on a limb there.
the guy that appeared to be the furthest from being an NHL player was John Scott. He was the slowest skater on the ice
John Scott, slow? Say it ain’t so! This is right in line with his observation a couple of weeks ago that Rockford should be really big this year because they’ve got a lot of tall guys.

Brunette-Toews-Kane
I know there’s been talk that Brunette and Kaner on the same line doesn’t make much sense because they essentially do the same thing (which I mostly disagree with), but I really like this line for a number of reasons:
1. It follows Q’s formula of “puck-winner (Brunette), playmaker (Kane), finisher (Toews)” to a tee.
2. It allows Toews to be a bigger factor on defense because as the finisher, instead of puck-winner, he won’t be stuck below the goal line so often and can get back on defense faster. (something McClure alluded to a year ago – see I actually retain some useful info)
3. Piggybacking off of #2: When Sharp’s skates with Toews and Kaner, Toews is the puck-winner, which leaves Sharp and Kane as the primary defenders. You can’t have everything, but this definitely isn’t optimal.
4. I know many aren’t open to the idea of Frolik on the 2nd line, but Sharp as the finisher and Hossa as the puck-winner is a good start. If Frolik can be coached to “pass first” I contend that he’s the best playmaker remaining on the roster (outside of Bolland).
5. Frolik is left-handed, so that should theoretically work well with Hossa.
I just can’t imagine that Frolik isn’t going to get an early crack at the 2nd line. The kid’s got a high hockey IQ from what I’ve seen so far, and last year was a small sample size (for me at least) to jump to the conclusion that this won’t work.
I also like the idea of Frolik in a playmaker role because he’ll still get plenty of shots, but he should also get higher quality shots as compared to last season. He wouldn’t be forced to take outside shots – and would in fact be discouraged from doing so. I can only see this boosting his confidence.
Thoughts?

by ChicagoNativeSon on Sep 19, 2011 11:29 AM CDT reply actions
The question is whether or not Frolik can really be trained to be a pass first type of player
I agree that he seems to have a high hockey IQ, and I certainly liked what I saw from him in a ‘Hawks sweater last season (other than his un-sustainably shooting percentage), but the fact is that he has always been a shoot first type of guy and it’s really hard to train that out of someone. I like Frolik, and you’re probably correct that he’ll have every opportunity to earn that last spot in the top 6, but I just have a hard time seeing him being able to so dramatically change his style of play to be the passer / playmaker that Hossa and Sharp really need and thus I have a hard time seeing him stick there long-term
There are three types of people in this world: those who can count, and those who can't.
by FrankStallone on Sep 19, 2011 11:34 AM CDT up reply actions
Agreed
The only time Frolik became effective was when he was on Bolland’s line in a counter-punch role, where the Hawks didn’t have the puck as much as the other team did. If Sharp is too shoosty to be on Hossa’s line, putting Frolik there only exacerbates that problem. We saw Hossa’s visible frustration with Frolik firing from bad angles last year when they shared time on a line. I just fear that with that offensive zone possessions will result in one shot and then back the other way.
There are 3 2-man combos that we know work: 19-81, 88-10, 36-67. The idea should be to find the best complimentary pieces to those “known knowns” while distributing those combinations across 3 lines. That should result in scoring depth not many can deal with.

It's not that I don't "get it"
I’m pretty sure I do. But how many games was that line together? A handful? Not a big enough sample size for me (or likely Q) to say “This is permanent.”
There are too many other pieces that also need to fit to set that in stone. Olesz and Smith likely get looks on that line.

The problem for me in all of this line juggling always comes back to Olesz
He himself stated over the weekend that his knee is not 100%. So if there were concerns about him before, they should be greater now. People have him penciled in for a tryout on the top 6. I don’t see it early on.
I still think he makes the roster although a stint in Rockford might not be bad. I don’t believe anyone would blink at him going through re-entry waivers, so it wouldn’t be a concern.
If he makes the squad, I see him on the 3rd or 4th lines (maybe 4th early on to give his knee some time to strengthen). But due to his salary, he’d be the joke of the NHL skating on the 4th line, so no way in hell Q doesn’t try to make it work with him on the 3rd.
That of course could lead to Bickell on the 4th line, so Olesz-Bolland-Frolik might be a possibility. I just don’t see Bickell-Bolland-Frolik being “a thing” like everyone else, even if it works. Maybe we see it at times this season, and they reunite for he playoff tour.

I think the key component of that third line is 36-67
Interchanging Bickell and Olsez might not make that much difference as Olsez is probably more like Bickell than any other Hawk. For what it’s worth, apparently Rusty is dominating the scrimmages today.
I can’t wait to see how this all shakes out.

Heavy lifters on the wing.
Hawks had one “heavy lifter defensive winger” last year in Bickell. Team added two more from Florida in Frolik and Olesz. Would be totally shocked if the Hawks third line wasn’t made up of two of those three. And mildly shocked if the third line right wing wasn’t Frolik.
Yup
My 3rd line is Bolland with a combo of Bickell, Olesz and/or Frolik. Ans like I said, maybe Smith gets a shot at some point.

Bolland Versteeg.
I don’t agree with this.
The key component to the cup winning Bolland line was Ladd. He did everything and is being rewarded for it now (although he is stuck in Manitoba for a while). Versteeg is being bounced around the league, and will probably continue to be because he is one of the most frustrating players to watch and most likely play with. He is high reward at times. Kane is too, but his reward far outweighs his risk. Kaner will do a spin o rama, but it will be down low. Versteeg will toe drag at center ice. Stupid player. Do I have a point? Yes! Frolik, as you are saying is cpmparable Versteeg. God help us all season if we can’t find a 1/2 Ladd. Bolland will be worn down covering up for Frolik. So who is a proven puck winner that can contribute offensively? Is it Bickell, Olesz, or Smith? Mayers? I don’t know, but if that player doesn’t perform, Dave is going to have to work even harder all season.
Grumpy Fuck
Ladd and Bolland
My belt holds my pants up, but the belt loops hold my belt up. I don’t really know what’s happening down there. Who is the real hero? – Mitch Hedberg
Last year they were separated, both played center, Ladd prolly had better wingers but worse D, they both played against top lines, and Ladd was a -10 while Bolland was a +11.
All of Ladd’s increased production last year came via special teams. He did not play on special teams in Chicago.
He did not step up his game so much as continuing to perform based on expanded opportunities.
It seems clear to me after last year that the key to Dave Bolland’s game is not Marty Havlat or Kris Versteeg or Andrew Ladd, but Dave Bolland. In this way, he’s kinda like a mini-Toews.

Bolland is the constant.
He is the key, no doubt. I hope he stays healthy. The point I am trying to get across is that Bolland needs complimentary players around him, just like Toews. If Bolland has to go in the corners all the time to win the puck, he cannot be effective in his defensive role through the middle. Frolik is not going to be the board battler. Who will fill the board battler role on Bolland’s line?
For that matter, who fills it for Sharp and Toews? I see above that we don’t think it’s Brunette. Who the fuck is it?
Top 6
Toews
Kane
Sharp
Hossa
Brunette
Olesz – Stalberg – Bickell
Grumpy Fuck
I'm not sure exactly where I stated that Frolik is the exact same player as Versteeg?
But way to take the ball and run with it – and use examples from the year after to illustrate your point.
Hey, I know Ladd is a very good player, but all the Ladd love here is often over the top. In 2009, he had a career year playing on a talented line. In 2010, not so much; it was solid.
And prior to 2009? He never even played a full season and his numbers were less than impressive (look ’em up). He never even topped 11 goals in a season. Actually, he never broke 17 goals as a Hawk and only had 20 even-strength goals last year playing on the top line.
If Ladd was so incredible, why didn’t he get special teams time? We often judge other players by this, but somehow it doesn’t apply to the folk hero, Andrew Ladd. Versteeg, whose defense is often overlooked, was a force on the PK. Even minimum wager Bryan Bickell had a better year statistically in 2011 than Ladd did in 2010. Ladd, who’s now making $4.4M. Can you say “overpaid?”

by FrankStallone on Sep 20, 2011 9:11 AM CDT up reply actions
Never said that
mostly because I have never seen Rusty play before and have absolutely no fucking clue if he’s any good. But there are some parallels – Ladd cracked 20 points just once with the Hurricanes and seemed incapable of staying healthy for a full season before we acquired him in the trade that sent Tuomo Ruutu the other way. We got pretty lucky with how well Ladd worked out for us, but he still wasn’t exactly god-like – his 34 assists in 2008-‘09 are his career high, and he maxed out at 17 goals for the ’Hawks in 2009-’10. He potted 29 last year with Atlantapeg and 30 assists to get up to 59 points, but there he was getting the top line and PP minutes that he never got in Chicago and he was still only a 0.73 PPG player – good but not great.
The point is that we put Andrew Ladd on a pedestal here. I’m not saying that he wasn’t missed last year, I’m not saying that I wouldn’t have loved to have him back, and I’m not saying I’d rather have Rusty. I’m just agreeing with CNS that Andrew Ladd is not the end-all-be-all of LW’s that a lot of people around here like to pretend that he is.

Stats are my favorite.
We need a player this season to play hard and tough and win the puck in battles. There I did not say the name that shall not be said. He did that. This team has goal scorers and fast skaters. Who, after Toews and Hossa can consistently win a battle on the boards? If we ask Bolland to do it consistently, it’s going to be bad.
Where is the board battle winning stat?
Grumpy Fuck
Who is the missing board battler?
I’d say Kyle Beach should be that guy, but he’s not. Not yet. Will he ever be? Good question. Can’t discuss…Frank says off-limits.
(haha just fuckin’ with ya Frank, kinda)
Let's Go Hawks!
Best board battler on the team this year that is NOT a core player?
Olesz. And it’s not even close.
Hawks have three defensive minded players this year. Which is two more then last year. And I will take Bickell and Olesz as a tandem over Ladd if I can have Frolik on the other side over Versteeg.
Versteeg and Ladd were better “fillins” on the top lines but for purely defensive checking line players, I’ll take the three over the two. Especially if Smith matures into a fourth.
Ladd is a solid player capable willing to do things others are not
Versteeg is a good player and not overly smart. However, I wish he was still on the Blackhawks, but he is not.
Ladd is not a superstar and I am not slobbing over his talent. I wish HE as still a Blackhawk, but he is not.
The question is on the third line or whatever you want to call it, with Bolland as the constant, as he should be, who fills in the other roles. If Frolik is one of those players, you will need a banger/puck winner as they say, and who is it?
Grumpy Fuck
I'm not sure where the mystery in this question is?
Simple answer: Bickell and Olesz, maybe Smith gets a shot.
Oh wait, that’s right. Bickell is soft even though he was 2nd on the team and among the league leaders in Hits/TOI. I forgot that they weren’t “quality hits.”

I never said Bickell was soft.
He’s bige and will definitely bring some physical presence. Hossa and Toews will too, but like you have said, do we want them to. Kane can win on the boards too, not phisically, but with his stick. Again, do we want him to.
Olesz. We got a lot riding on him. I hope he’s what you think he is.
Grumpy Fuck
I think Olesz is definately a wild card coming into the season...
Since expectations/past performances indicate he is “just a guy” at the NHL level, anything we can get out of him should be a plus. It seems as if the general consensus is that he has a lot of talent but can’t stay healthy enough or consistent enough game to game to make an impact. If he does, it doesn’t seem like too much of a stretch to say he could be a contributor to the 3rd/4th line. Who knows? Maybe we get lucky and he ends up being an Andrew Ladd type who finally got healthy enough to fulfill his draft status…

This
There are 3 2-man combos that we know work: 19-81, 88-10, 36-67. The idea should be to find the best complimentary pieces to those "known knowns" while distributing those combinations across 3 lines.
That sums it up and it seems like it should be so simple to do.
Thank you, sir! May I have another?
I had a good weekend, what can I say?
19 and anything works well. 88 and anything works well. No doubt 19 and 88 is a great duo. But is it the best use of their talent on the same line?
Thank you, sir! May I have another?
+/- from last year
1st line 19-88 plus 26, 2nd line 10-81 minus 1 for a combined plus 25.
1st line 19-81 plus 6, 2nd line 10-88 minus 5 for a combined plus 1.
You and your numbers
19-88 plus 26 is impressive but are we a one line team? 82 and 81 were fairly useless together on the 2nd line. Who was the 3rd on those two lines when they were split? We had a bunch of spare parts filling in the holes. To me, that’s the key.
Thank you, sir! May I have another?
And who do you have on the team (besides Toews)
that can cover for the defensive liabilities that are Kane or Sharp?
Let alone good enough to cover for both of them on the same line?
This is McClure's fight.
That sums it up and it seems like it should be so simple to do.
I was just trying to be supportive for a change.
Thank you, sir! May I have another?
I know it will never happen
But I would be a proponent of splitting up DDN… I think the most logical fit for the top two lines would include the following:
Brunette – Toews – Hossa
Frolik – Sharp – Kane
I completely agree that Frolik should be top 6, and again, I agree that in the role of playmaker he might struggle. One of the things I see from him that I like the most is his strength on the puck and responsible 2-way play. On a line with Sharp and Kaner, he would probably be the “puck-winner”, leaving Kane as “playmaker” and Sharp as finisher. Sharp and Kaner already have excellent chemistry so I don’t think there would be an offensice output issue.. I think in that role he could definately be successful and would get more scoring oppurtunites around the net with Kaner and Sharp playing the outside. It would also allow for Q to (finally) put Hossa in a postion to excel by having Toews as his Center…

3rd Line
Bickell – Bolland – Smith
If the Hawks intend on using Bolland as the ultimate 3rd Line checking center, I think Smith would be a reliable partner for him and Bickell the 6-4 midget. Since Bickell just wants to play around outside the circles, Smith has shown briefly that he is willing to go to the net and plays a style that would complement Bolland well.

I think Smith could
be a great addition to the 4th. Without being captain obvious, the overall goal is to be able to roll 4 lines consistently and confidently. Smith on the 4th helps get us there.
Oct 7 2011. Close your eyes, here we go.
Yup
and he could flip from wing to center when Mayers needs a rest.
On the other hand, it’s quite conceivable Smith centers that line regardless. Smith centered in college. He switched back to wing last year in Rockford.

Again though, with Frolik as the puck-winner
1) I didn’t see that as his strength, and 2) Sharp and Kane are the primary defenders. Doesn’t really work for me.
I would have Brunette instead on a line with Sharp and Kane. Let him be the digger since he’s made a career of it. Toews and Hossa together are great in the corners, so Brunette is overkill. So, I see something more like:
Stalberg-Toews-Hossa
Brunette-Sharp-Kane
Hey, I’m open to a number of possibilities, since we know we’ll see them. I just think we’ll see something like I suggested more than others do.

Canuck
1. Somebody from Canada
2. An offensive term for a French-Canadian person
Let’s not start any border wars though. You guys are all OK as long as you root for the Hawks first and the Leafs second.
Thank you, sir! May I have another?
Hawks first, second, and third...don't give a fuck about anyone else
We are in agreement…

I don’t know how important practice in hockey is regarding other sports, but I would tend to think that Bolly’s annoying traits only help his teammates come gametime.
God bless Ilya Bryzgalov.

While there are 4 preseason games going on today
I can only find a link to one stream
Sens @ Leafs 7pm Est
http://www.veetle.com/index.php/chan…#4e779acecf86e
Enjoy it while it lasts Boston, cause the Hawks are coming to take back what is ours.
I've found this site, I don't know how good it is yet though
It’s an aggregate site. Link
According to the NHL network (at least it's in my guide)
It looks like they are showing that game tonight.
That's right folks the Hawks hope and kool-aid is back.
that link wasn't working
this one is

Watching the Toronto game on hockey streams.com even though it's on NHL channel...guess that means no blackouts for Hawks games this year

90 bucks per year but full screen iPad stream was perfect, no dropout/ chatter, I liked it
"Statistical Improbability on a Colossal Scale"
I was impressed with the stream too
hopefully it will work as well tomorrow night
That's right folks the Hawks hope and kool-aid is back.
There's a video up on Nhl.com
with Shanahan explaining the new rules for head shots and boarding calls- with video examples.
basically
don’t hit anyone in the head – end of story

I see him practicing his excuses
It wasn’t malicious – I swear. He bent down and his head hit my elbow. Didn’t you see it? I was behind the net too. Isn’t that the free-for-all zone?
That's right folks the Hawks hope and kool-aid is back.
"I didn't hit him in the head!"
“Your elbow hit him right above the ear.”
“Ohhh, that head”

Apparently MSG doesn't care for this "Local markets only" bs
Canes vs Sabres so no one cares that much but hey hockey! Or will be once the intermission is over.
