Out Of The Races And Onto The Tracks - Oilers 4, Hawks 2
Now it's hockey season. Doesn't it feel good? Some thoughts coming away from the first pre-season game
- Big Brother Toews just might have a future in this league. Young David...well, it beats a junior year of college, doesn't it?
- On to some of the new guys. First up: Ray Emery. Razor looked good on a few scrambles in close, but was fooled on the two goals on shots originating from long distance, which speaks to him not having his angles fully down and relying on his instincts and athleticism. For his sake, those angles better come back soon, because Alex Salak looked solid and positively huge in the crease in the second half of the game, but that size did him in on the late Eberle goal, as the puck found the in-between area.
- So Rostislav Olesz just might be able to play. He had fantastic chemistry with Toews all night as he's reported to have had so far in camp. From my vantage point, he looks to have very good instincts away from the puck, and puts himself in a position to be found. Again, Toews clearly has something to do with that, as does facing off against Oiler bums (present and future), but Viktor Stalberg just still can't seem to find it. If Rusty is just slightly above "a guy", it helps with scoring depth tremendously.
- HEY KIDS!
- Leddy looked good except when engaging in physical battles, and he and Montador look more than capable of running a second power play unit. Montador is very paitent with the puck in that situation.
- Sami Lepisto looked fine, making sound decisions and boasting a fair amount of mobility. If Montador and Lepisto are the third pairing breaking camp, that about as good a compliment to the blue line depth that can be paid.
- For being the heir apparent to the 2nd line center position, Ben Smith was pretty invisible, wasn't he Jesse?
- John Scott is still fucking atrocious.
- FANS IN SECTION K IF YOU WOULD LIKE ICE CREAM SANDWICHES FOR YOUR KIDS.....
- Glad to see the clown shoes still fit.
- Mark McNeill and Brandon Saad stood out as far as the rookies are concerned. Saad seemed to relish opportunities to use his body to sheild the puck and take it to the hard areas of the ice, and McNeill made a nice play on the Mayers goal. Kyle Beach is still trying to get more than 2 braincells to fire simultaneously as this is being written.

Context is important here
it is preseason, but you’re also playing against half a roster of Junior/AHL guys. If you’re invisible or worse against them, how will you be against full NHL rosters? The solid NHL guys show why they are NHLers, and not a step lower, in these games.

Yeah
Stals can’t seem to bury any opportunities. His hands are pretty terrible and I don’t expect that to change this season. He likely won’t be seeing much time in the top 6.
Disagree on Leddy and Monty running the 2nd PP unit. I thought they were below average and would rather see a mix of Sharp/Keith/Seabs+someone good playing the point.
Saad seemed nervous all game. He had the puck on his stick fairly often but didn’t do much with it. There were a few times when he shot it from a distance when it seemed like he could have skated in a bit closer. He has talent, that much is clear, but he needs some time to develop. McNeill was good though. I thought he had a solid game all around.
Good to be watching hockey again.
literally said to my roommate,
as we sat in our living room, watching the feed on separate computers, “So I see Stalberg’s still got hands of stone” on that first setup from Tazer (I think).
all right, this isn't going to be big on dignity
I wish Leddy had put on more weight then he did this summer
but otherwise agree that he looked good.

Judging from how weak and slow Stals' hands were I think he has already started that party...
Olesz looked great though. I only got to see part of the second and the third period but was impressed. Granted my expectation were pretty low coming into camp but so far so good…

I'm wondering what will be left of Marian Hossa (if) by the time one of Kruger, Danault, McNeil becomes a top 6 centerman worthy of the title
Watching the game tonight, and the minutes assigned to Kruger, Danault (if he even is a center), and McNeil, it only reinforced my gathering conviction that the gaping hole on our 2nd line will remain an 800 pound gorrilla that we simply ignore because it makes little (financial) sense to make a huge commitment to a free agent or trade acquistion when you are sitting on a pipeline of cheap players and you can hope that “one of them pans out.”
Enough of the doom and gloom though, Danault made it through the first game without dashing my excitement for the player he might be by 2013-2014.

I think for Hossa this has to be his defining year as a Hawk
Now that injuries are not an issue (knock on wood) and he finally got some rest the excuses should be gone. I personnaly am expecting him to have an outstanding year but his point production is entirely dependent who his center is. Hopefully they give him some run with Toews but who knows with Quennville… I am just hoping Sharp pulls his head out of his ass and plays responsibly enough on the defensive end for Q to justify putting him and Kaner together, thus leaving Hossa to play with 19 for an extended period.
I definately agree with your point and it kinda worries me as well. A second line center other than Sharp would make this team very tough to beat. Danault looks like what they were pumping Kruger up to be last year when they brought him over… Really god damn good with excellent vision and playmaking potential. Still 2 years away though… Sigh…
by Boris Mironov on Sep 21, 2011 7:29 AM CDT up reply actions
I think for Hossa this has to be his defining year as a Hawk
Agreed, especially about how tough this team would be we had another second line center to allow Sharp to play left wing. That may be the point to saving some cap space and having all the one year contracts. If someone steps up, great. If not, we evaluate at mid term if we need a top six forward or a D man the most and try to trade for one.
We won a Cup with Sharp at center, so all is not lost. Unless someone at the bottom of the roster has a career year, we need all the core guys to stay healthy and play consistently well, not just Hoss.

Olesz was a high first round pick
he probably won’t become a “star” at this point – but he may be a guy that just needs some real talent to run with to be a good producer. If he is a good fit with Toews, they might have a great year together.

That Panther’s fan on the GDT last night seemed to think that Olesz only plays this well when he is A.) Healthy and B.) Playing on a top line with premium linemates. Well there’s not much we can do with item A, but as far as item B goes I don’t think that’s a problem, as most of us are assuming he is slated to be a top 6 forward.

Noticed that as well
Hopefully it’s not a sign of things to come, but when they let in that GWG, I said to myself, “now those are the Hawks I remember.” It’s preseason though. Can’t put much stock in it, especially the PP since the only forward we’ll definitely see on the PP from last night is Toews.
And they had at most
six-seven guys that are going to be on the team on opening night, and not the opening night goalie. At most three guys on the top two lines. Not a representative sample.
Oct 7 2011. Close your eyes, here we go.
More like at most 2 guys who will play in the top 9
1) Toews
2) Either Olesz, Stalberg, or possibly Kruger w/ some looks @ 2C
The other 7 of the top 9 – Kane, Hossa, Sharp, Brunette, Bolland, Bickel, Frolik – weren’t suited up. Also, the ‘Hawks didn’t bother playing 3 of their top 4 defensemen with Kieth, Seabs, and Hjammer all sitting this one out as well. So yeah, I don’t really see things like the ’Hawks inability to convert on the PP last night as indicative of how things will go in the regular season.

True, it was against an Oilers split squad
but that really doesn’t make a difference. Regardless of who they’re against it just seems silly to try to gauge ’Hawks are going to do in the regular season, ESPECIALLY on situations like the PP, when 10 out of the 13 players that will comprise their top 3 forward lines and top 2 D-pairings (and not to mention the starting goalie) are all scratched.

well, I agree that its silly to form an opinion of the PP
given that the PP is not at all what it will be in the regular season, but by the same reasoning, the defense is totally different, as are the forwards, so is it fair to form an opinion of the backup goaltenders in that light?
by oregon_hawk on Sep 21, 2011 12:46 PM CDT up reply actions
I'd say that it's fair to form an opinion
but the fact that the defense and forwards are totally different is something that needs to be weighed into said opinion-forming process. In other words statistics (save %, GAA, etc.) aren’t nearly as telling as they are for regular season play, but you should still be able to form educated opinions and make judgements based on the eye test

3 of those 4 really don't hold water
- Hawks seldom were behind early last year. In fact, they had a better Point Differential in the first 2 periods in 2011 than they did in 2010.
- This piggyback’s on #1 and is therefore also not true. Plus, how do you define individual vs team effort? Are there such things as team goals? This seems to be based more on your perception than reality. (no offense meant, we all do it)
- This unfortunately is true, but the loss in the 3rd last night wasn’t due to double-shifting the top lines as may have been the issue on the majority of occasions last season. Sometimes shit just happens. You win some in the 3rd, you lose some in the 3rd.
- Top 5 PP in the league last year. “Clown shoes. Kane is lazy. Dinosaurs (Scott is big?).”
