Hawks 3 - Scum 3 (Scum win in Thumb War)
Umm.. sorry about the lack of game thread. I thought this game started at 7:00... not an impressive training camp from me so far. Thank got I'm not fighting for a spot... right?
- It sucks to lose but these two teams were worlds apart on paper so I would have gladly taken the point if this was somehow a regular season tilt... you know, if all but 10 of the regular Blackhawks came down with the plague or something.
- Despite a shaky start, Alexander Salak played his first full game as a Blackhawk and allowed only one goal after the first period. After Crawford played a full game on Friday it's pretty clear that Q's going to give both Emery and Salak a full shot at a game. This wasn't a game where Salak really pulled ahead in anyone's eyes. He looked a little scrambled and got the help of a few posts throughout the game. If Emery has an outstanding game on Wednesday it could settle this debate once and for all.
- Good to see some young ones not named Saad stepped up and had a solid game. Brandon Pirri and Jimmy Hayes seemed to find some chemistry together and combined for all of the Hawks offense, save for Ben Smith's lone assist.
- Hayes could be a welcome addition to the team given his size and hands (re-watch that goal). He's probably still a long shot at this point but again, it gives us something to watch a little down the line. Also - the Major League references would be a welcome addition to our arsenal.
- It seems Michael Frolik is stepping up early in this year's race for "Blackhawk who is absolutely snakebitten". Good to get that out of the way early.
- There were certainly issues that would be upsetting if this was the regular season - lazy, stupid penalties and piss-poor special teams come to mind but this is hardly the team we'll see on October 7th so it's not worth getting too worked up over just yet.

Very impressive game by the Rock Hawgs.
Salak today often reminded me of the last goaltender to wear the number 53 here (Khabibulin in 2005-06, wasn’t that treat?) in that he was scrabbly, as Kills already alluded to, and left his glove low which resulted in the Wings shooting there early and often and got beat there twice and if not for a Wings penalty would’ve been 3. I know it’s a European style, but he needs to keep it a tad higher up and give himself a chance at least. Down low – the kid is rock solid (Zetterberg ShO notwithstanding).
I remember hearing that Q plans on practicing the specialty teams later this week. That’s good news as the PP just isn’t clown shoes bad, but Bears running game bad. Non-existent.
I like Ben Smith and everything, but I just don’t like change to 28 for him or anyone for that matter. More reason to have Steve Larmer’s name hang from the rafters in Chicago. Hopefully, Ben Smith will become at least half the player Larmer was. One of the best.
Frolik needs a better move in the shootout than a ‘Kane weak backhand’ move. Back to the drawing board, like Game 6 drawing board. I do disagree with Kills here, I think Frolik is going to have a great year and so is Bickell once they get reunited with Bolland.
Stalberg has been more than a good this preseason. Very confident and assertive.
Still worried about Leddy? Very, very good today and look poised upon his years. He’ll be O.K. moving forward this year.
So, how did everyone enjoy that football game today ;)?

regarding Leddy...
I don’t worry about his puck moving skills but I still worry about his board work (a lot). Hopefully he gets stronger and better as we move into the Spring.
Not worried about special teams just yet. While today’s PP was funny bad in spots, these were the baby Hawks against 5 legitimate Wing defenders.
You may need to reread his point about Frolik

Hawks+ Packers+
I’m just happy that two of my teams were reigning champions at the same time. Something I never thought I’d see happen. Hell the bulls even got to the conference finals at the same time.

Kane at center
Isn’t this the diplomatic way of a coach telling your GM he fucked you? Am I wrong here?
who would he even be centering? Sharp?

Or to put it another way
let’s say you’ve decided that the spare part (Kruger) your GM gave you to fill the center spot won’t work and you want to get the beat writers to focus on the issue and put some of that $3.4 million in cap space to work getting you a center that is the answer and you wanted to do it in such a way that you don’t also end up with those “Coach Q – Stan Bowman rift grows” stories (see Ozzie/Kenny) is there a more brilliant way of getting all that than this?
I agree with your main thesis which seems to be, essentially...
…that Kruger has so far been pretty useless and is ticketed for Rockford but what I don’t get is why can’t coach’s and gm’s communicate about this kind of thing one on one and figure out a plan that doesn’t involve pissing contests in the press?
Not saying your wrong, I just don’t understand why it needs to be done this way.

I'm pretty sure it's not a "pissing contest" as you put it
I highly doubt a coach and GM in a professional sport would resort to passive-aggressive jabs at each other due to lack of communication. This isn’t middle-school. They’re paid to perform and bring the best out of the team they have available. What’s happening is essentially one of two things. Either the Hawks had no better alternatives at 2nd line center in the free agent market or Stanbow honestly believed in Sharpie or Freddy as the 2nd line center.
I doubt Q’s taking subtle jabs at Stan, especially in the preseason.
here are some actual quotes about it
We might try (Patrick) Kane at center," Quenneville said. "He’s been playing center throughout scrimmages and practices now. We’ll see.
He’s played center most of his life," Quenneville said. "Defensively, he’s gotten better as he’s grown … down low on the walls. It’s something we’re going to at least take a look at.
I know its been said that Kaner plays more like a center in the offensive zone, so I guess we’ll just have to see now (if Q does in fact try it out) how good he is at actually winning draws and on defense.

Kaner's FO's
Reg Season
2010 – 2011 – 2W 12L (14%)
2009 – 2010 – 9W 13L (41%)
2008 – 2009 – 13W 18L (42%)
2007 – 2008 – 16W 10L (62%)
Playoffs
2010 – 2011 – 0W 0L
2009 – 2010 – 2W 5L (29%)
2008 – 2009 – 1W 2L (33%)
Career Reg Season – 40W 53L (43%)
Career Playoff – 3W 7L (30%)
Career All 43W 60L (42%)
Essentially
What this translates into is that Q is a moron for even attempting this. Ok, maybe I’ll give him the preseason “Kane at center” bullshit, but this crap better not ever happen when points matter. The man’s just reaching now. How about you sign a decent center instead?
tell us how you really feel
While I’m not exactly looking forward to it, maybe Q knows something, or is seeing something positive in practices that we don’t know.

If Q is serious about this
And not just messing with the press (or, in a more likely scenario, if he’s serious about it and manages not to change his mind after a period and a half), you’d likely see Kaner out there with Sharpie or another winger who could take draws.
by Steeg of their own on Sep 26, 2011 6:44 AM CDT up reply actions
Agreed
I don’t know if he is serious about it though. I was thinking the same thing regarding the F/O’s. Sharp would take the draws, Kane would probably play the role. I just dont see it actually happening come regular season.

Rogers says
Kane told him that the subject first came up over the summer when Bowman approached him about playing center. So this isn’t a Q ploy, this cockamamie idea came from Bowman.

A nice 5-game suspension should be enough for that hit to send a message to this vard that this type of hockey, and the consequences that could arise, will not be tolerated.

That said — it will not take long for him to be suspended over something else. Bet by 10 games in he’s out for at least 5.

This Kane at center BS scares me. WTF..spend the rest of that cap money and get a real center and let Kane stay on the outside where he use his tremendous puck handling skills.
Kruger isn’t ready to play against men in the NHL yet so send him to Rockford to learn and toughen up.
… slag …
Will Kruger go back to Europe if the Hawks cut him?

I would think he would go to the Hogs
Thats just what I’m thinking if he ever wants a chance to play. He hasn’t impressed and right now I wonder if Pirri would get a chance with the big club before him?

Seems unlikely.
Pirri can’t play the 2C and one would think Mayers and Smith have priority to Center the 4th line. There really isn’t any room for Pirri unless Bolland or Toews goes down.

scum?
Make no mistake I am DOWN for Detroit-Chicago being a rivalry again. Damn Colorado is inconvenient and far too likeable to keep hating once Lemieux et al. were gone. We play Toronto twice a decade. Anaheim’s a rival the way Ford and Disney are rivals, ie we’re not. I can get to Chicago on a Thursday night. I know people from Chicago I can send ragging text messages about coinage and Kane.
When things are right in the hockey world Chicago is Detroit’s biggest rival and vice versa. You need a nickname that’s going to cut a Wings fan to the core, not start threads on maybe four of the 800 million Red Wings blogs likening your fanbase to Michigan State (this is very embarrassing for you).
So don’t got f—ing this thing up with a nickname that takes all the cleverness of a 6-year-old whose sister taught him his first naughty word to make her friends laugh. You’ve got a great core of a team and despite our best efforts we are going to be stuck together for the foreseeable future in the Central with football cities and people who don’t wear sleeves from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Meanwhile you’re sitting on an Original Six city full of half-employed people with Master’s degrees who grew up memorizing Star Wars. Please for the love and hate of Chelios, come up with something better than “scum.”
