Power To The People - Second City Hockey's Season Preview: The Special Teams
Today's question comes from long time guy 326 Bureau Chief:
Your selections for PP and PK units, please. (Include a utility pick in case of injury, suspension, etc.
And he actually said please, which is weird. Happy to help, Chief.
Let's start with the power play, because it's really just more fun to do so, isn't it? We've spent probably the most space debating and slating this unit, whether it's humming or the footwear of the jesters (my, wasn't that elegant?). We bemoan the forward on the point, we love it, we like it but want it to be someone else, we want that guy here and that guy there and why is this guy in front of the net and why isn't this guy and the the big beat goes on and on, and on and on.
You probably already know the first PP unit. It was the one last year that pretty much carried the Hawks to one of the league's best units. Kane on the half boards, Toews down low, Sharp at a point with Seabrook which makes exactly no sense but managed to work even though it would seem to have one foot tied in its colon. So the question is who takes the other forward spot. Most likely, and this is just a guess, Andrew Brunette will to provide some crease presence -- though he's actually more of a down-low-behind-the-goal-line presence, which is where Toews is. You could see Hossa up here, or Sharp on the other wing allowing Keith and Seabrook to pair on the backend. Seabrook can easily sneak down to get all the chances that Sharp does from there, we've seen him do it before. And this will give Keith more chances to ping the shin pads of everyone in the league, as if it were always his first at-bat of a ballgame.
But in my mind, Keith -- at least until say December -- shouldn't be on the power play at all. Part of the challenge this season is to keep his minutes reasonable until they can't be any more, and there's enough ammo on the back end to give him a rest during these times. He won't like it, they'd never do it, but it works for me.
Anyway, on to the second unit, and this is where Nick Leddy had better shine. He's clearly built to QB a unit, and has a better shot that he should use more often. The dream scenario is that he realizes his potential and has to be moved to the top one, but that's getting ahead of ourselves and we don't do that here. Out over the skiis and such, which I'm told is a bad thing, but I don't ski because it doesn't make any sense to me. That's for weirdos like McClure. Ideally, Leddy will be paired with Steve Montador (or as The Ombudsman wants to call him, "Monty Pylon", but that's way harsh). Montador has a heavy shot and knows when to sneak down to overload a kill as well. This could be Lepisto's role too, or Lepisto could take over for Leddy if Stan's prognostication skills falter again. Y'know, if they "Kruger". At least there are some options here. Even Hammer isn't the worst idea, because he's the one d-man we all know can walk a puck to find a shooting lane.
Up top, the only certainty here is that Dave Bolland will be working from the boards or behind the goal line, where he's more lethal. Hossa will be here if he doesn't get on the top unit. This is where things get tricky. Ideally, you'd like a crease crasher to join that duo, , with Hossa on his off-wing, and that should be Bryan Bickell. But it isn't. It might be Rusty Olesz, but we don't know that yet. It could be Brunette too, depending on how the first one shakes out. Or if you want to be more creative about it with a floater, Frolik would do this job. Frolik definitely does the Bolland thing when he almost certainly gets hurt. In a pinch, Ben Smith could do it as well. Again, at least there are plenty of options. My optimum to start is Bolland-Bicks-Hossa.
Ah, now to the kill. Some of these are already set. Toews and Hossa will be second out on most kills. The guess here is that Bolland and Frolik will start most of them. We'll see how that goes, but they're both nippy and quick and responsible, and will provide a threat. After that, I look for Sharp to be with either Mayers or Smith. If a fourth forward unit is needed, if Stalberg is in the lineup I've always wanted the Hawks to try that, or Olesz has seen some time in the preseason. On the backend, they probably shield Leddy from this because the Marlboro 72, Hammer, Montador and either Lepisto or especially O'Donnell can handle it.

WHO CARES ABOUT THIS? KANE IS PLAYING CENTER! THE WORLD HATH ENDED!
Seriously though, I’m drooling at the prospect of a guy like Andrew Brunette sitting by the net to poke home any and all pucks that land at his feet. I always hated seeing that guy by the crease when he was with Minny, but methinks I’m gonna love it now. I’d like to see him on the top unit with Kaner and Toews.

Great write up Sam
What I like now is the depth and options we have. While I always hated Sharpie on the PP point, it seemed to work, until late in the season/playoffs when teams knew that every solid attempt was going to be a “backdoor”.

kind of like saying he’s bad – in a Dave Bolland sort of way instaed of a John Scott sort of way.
When your way ahead of your times, people can misconstrue what you say. When it was hip to be hip, I was hep. (I believe Joe Jackson said that)
I pick a couple of the neighborhood kids up on the way to school with my son. We were a bit early today and i told Greg, “I’ll bet J-dog is not going to be ready.” Greg immediately said, “Don’t call him J-dog,” as if the old man was a big embarrasment or something. As soon as J-dog got in the car I told him, “Justin, Greg said i can’t call you J-dog.” He just smiled and refused to become part of the hepcat discussion.
To make a long story short "that’s cold’ = high five, fist bump and major recs.
For the second PP unit
my guess is Olesz-Bolland-Hossa. It seems to me that, assuming he is a regular contributor, Olesz has the skill set that Bickell lacks and the size that Smith lacks to be a good PP net presence…
There are three types of people in this world: those who can count, and those who can't.
Agreed
My only caveat to this would be Olesz continuing to look like a bonafide NHL player… So far, so good… so what? Damn preseason…

The only thing is,
yes it is pre-season so I would expect an actual NHLer to dominate. More or less, he has.
My prediction is predicated on Olesz continuing to look like a bona fide NHLer
He’s looked good in the preseason so far, dominating AHL-level players which is what you want to see from an NHL-caliber guy. If that continues into the regular season, and he does prove to be a legitimate top-6 or top-9 type of guy, then I think he’s going to be ahead of both Smith and Bickell on the PP depth chart. Bickell has size, and Smith has good hands, but Olesz has both

by FrankStallone on Sep 28, 2011 2:24 PM CDT up reply actions
The only thing I say is Smith IMO
isn’t set to go any higher than the 4th line. He might for a short stint, but I can’t see Smith being an issue here. I would say more along the lines of if he continues to be solid would put him ahead of Stals and Bickell

Olesz didn't get much PP time in FLA...
…and wasn’t very successful when he was. By TOI, he was the 7th forward on the PP. And his output consisted of 1G, 0A.
Yes, but it's hard to do well on the PP when your teammates would get cut from SEL teams
ignore the past, see what he can do in the present

The only thing that would worry me about that PP line
is the lack of a big body net presence, which I think is kind of important for a PP

Truth. In that case your option is Bickell. Either way its going to end poorly.
"Sure, I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is, I'm not. I honestly just feel that America is the best country and the other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism."
No, that's why I'm advocating Olesz
Olesz is nearly as big as Bickell – listed at 6’2" 213 lbs. compared to 6’4" 223 lbs. – but seems to have much better hands and scoring touch. If he continues to appear to be a bona fide NHL player in the regular season (i.e. once he’s playing against other bona fide NHLers instead of dominating kids bound for the AHL or juniors) then I think he’d be the best option to camp in front of the net on PP2
There are three types of people in this world: those who can count, and those who can't.

"Sure, I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is, I'm not. I honestly just feel that America is the best country and the other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism."
I get that, the consensus is still out on him
I’m just saying that if he does prove the skeptics wrong and is a legitimate top-9 forward, then he’s the best option for net duty on the 2nd PP

Joel Quenneville is one of the better coaches in the NHL, and he had to send either Dave Bolland or Jonathan Toews out for nearly every faceoff. There was talk this week of switching Patrick Kane over to centre, which makes a truckload of sense: Moderate Toews’ shifts, allow him to be the two-way player he can be, and let Kane run amok as a scorer with Sedin-style minutes up front. He can re-unite the Sharp-Toews-Kane line for powerplays (as Vigneault does with the Sedins and Kesler) and use Bolland to compensate (as Chicago’s Malhotra) for the couple shifts after a powerplay to let them rest up.
This guy actually thinks were going to go ahead with this crazy scheme during real games, doesn’t he?
"Sure, I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is, I'm not. I honestly just feel that America is the best country and the other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism."
What's stopping us from leaving Kane as a 2nd C
I mean, I’m not saying it’ll happen for sure, but it COULD potentially happen given that our biggest need has been 2nd line C, right?
1st line: Brunette/ Toews / Hossa
2nd line: Sharp / Kane / Insert RW.
We tried it once before
With disastrous results. It’s preseason, why not give it another whirl. If it works stick with it.

Defense. Reality. All sorts of things will probably stop this from happening in a real life hockey game.
"Sure, I've been called a xenophobe, but the truth is, I'm not. I honestly just feel that America is the best country and the other countries aren't as good. That used to be called patriotism."
That 2nd line will be instant offense
But yeah you’re right they’d struggle defensively. If he looks good as a 2C he could stick there. I think the Hawks are in between a rock and a hard place as they need another top 6 forward and don’t have one. If Brunette fails, they’re down 2 top 6 forwards…
why let those things get in the way of a good delusion?

More like
Sharp / Toews / ??
Brunette / Kane / Hossa
That 2nd line has been practicing together for the last few days and will play together at least to start the preseason game tonight. I dunno who will play with Toews tonight since Sharp is obviously not ready to go after that appendectomy yet, probably Saad and either Olesz or Stalberg is my guess.

Oh
I thought I read they wanted to keep Toews with Hossa but your lines make a bit more sense. I would figure the Hawks would want a shooter with Kane though as opposed to with Toews.
And having Hossa
on the line with Kaner may alleviate some of the pressure on the defensive end…

Brunette and Stalberg? Lol
and the "when" is tonight
I think it’s still an “if” for games that actually matter though, we’ll see how tonight goes…

I meant at some point in his career,
he will be a center – permanently.
for me...
the guy’s article comes across as concern trolling. There isn’t a shred of statistical evidence that could support his statistical analysis. Keep in mind that Toews has played some time sans Kane and the numbers in those instances all seem to go counter Camcharron’s conclusion.
I'm just a little confused about why NM is using the waning days of the preseason to write articles that are entirely about Hawks team strategy.
Is there nothing Canuck-related that would make a better article than him trying to pontificate on the Hawks center situation, which he plainly knows nothing about?

From tinights game notes
20-year old NICK LEDDY paced Chicago with 25:20 of ice time in Detroit while 20-year old blueliner DYLAN
OLSEN ranked second at 23:47.
(Neither will play tonight)
ALSO and more awesome
THIS IS YOUR CAPTAIN SPEAKING:
• 22-year old Blackhawks Captain JONATHAN TOEWS recorded a pair of primary assists and a +3 plus/minus
rating in Friday’s preseason home opener against the Capitals.
• TOEWS led the Blackhawks and shared 10th in the NHL with a career-high 76 points (32G, 44A) in 80 regularseason
contests in 2010-11, and ranked eighth among league forwards with a career-best +25 rating.
• Exactly half of TOEWS’ 76 points (15G, 23A) on the season were recorded in the last 32 contests of the year.
• The Winnipeg, Manitoba, native collected a team-best 28 assists and shared the club lead with 49 points at
even-strength.
• TOEWS won an NHL-high 937 faceoffs during the season and finished ninth in the league with a 56.7%
winning percentage in the faceoff circle
Grumpy Fuck
There he is Bogarting all the faceoffs
Enjoy it while it lasts Boston, cause the Hawks are coming to take back what is ours.
Hopefully the pipeline will produce another Center
who is capable of actually winning a faceoff and staying upright at the same time… I think he had to be out there for a lot of those due to lack of a reliable second option…

OK, I'll say it again.
In a couple of studies I’ve read, winning faceoffs has shown around a 4/10th’s of one percent advantage to the team (in scoring goals) if you win 55% of your faceoffs compared to only winning 45%.
Hey every little bit matters but, imo, people really over emphasize winning a faceoff. Being defensively responsible is far more important for a center. As is being able to get the puck back.
I think it matters more in certain situations than others
especially defensive zone draws a) on the kill and/or b) following an icing. I bet if you could somehow isolate the correlation for just these situations you’d find it to be very important.
Actually, no
Faceoffs only impact the next 20 seconds or so of play. So the only real impact of losing a faceoff is in the defensive zone. Which means the half of one percent impact I’ve described is made up almost entirely from the situations you describe. Otherwise it has almost no impact at all.
In the defensive zone you are likely to give up an extra goal every 40 faceoffs lost (I think that is from Gabe’s article). Bolland lost around 20 more defensive faceoffs last year then he won. That is a half goal disadvantage for losing faceoffs in the defensive zone for the entire year. Something that he more then makes up for with his defensive play.
If that's the average
Bolly probably gives up even less.
This is sort of interesting.
Do you have a link to the Gabe article to which you refer? I’ve read a lot of his stuff, but I don’t recall that one particularly.
If those stats are true, then faceoffs are one of those things that seems intuitively important, but turns out to be not terrifically important at all compared to the actual play that follows the FO win/loss.
by Steeg of their own on Sep 28, 2011 6:02 PM CDT up reply actions
Faceoff articles.
Gabes article was from a long time ago. The thing about the newer articles deals with the 10% differential. Winning the draw versus losing the draw is important if you won all your draws or lost all of them.
Thing is everyone is pretty much near 50% on draws ‘+/-’ 5-8%. So anything that only affects the situation around 10% of the time has to be really significant when it does happen to really matter. Or the 1/10th of the time part makes it fairly negligible.
Hmmm. In that case, I will do google research.
The stats here interest me. If the articles were written several years ago, I’ll also be interested to see if the stats still hold today as he postulated several years prior. Stats have since gotten a lot more nuanced and specific, and arena stats teams have responded by getting a bit more sensitive about how they keep the numbers sheet. Perhaps something to look into…
by Steeg of their own on Sep 28, 2011 7:34 PM CDT up reply actions
Not to diminish what Toews did for this team last year
But the faceoffs stat isn’t all that impressive considering the sheer number of draws Toews took because for most of the season he was the only guy we could count on to win a draw.

We all agree that Keith needs to get back to form, part of which includes being that near-70 point player on the backend he was two years ago. Yet now the idyllic situation is to have Keith sit during the PP? (Arms raised in confusion)

I’m guessing Keith probably suffers from Dan Boyle syndrome, wherein the universe can’t actually handle his awesome, so when he plays too much, he has to just be average, and not badassmuthaf**** all the time.

and a bad scenario for the Fantasy Leagues.
his value would go down substantially if he’s not on the PP.
The points isn't my biggest concern...
I’d be happy if he returned to ‘08-’09 form. 44 points and a +33 would delight me.
The Hawks PP
with the puck running through Kane at the right half boards is a wonderful thing of beauty. They’ve perfected the options off this setup and found the right personnel to run it.
The only time this hasn’t worked is when the Hawks have been prevented from a) setting up in the zone or b) getting the puck to the right side. Late in the season teams playing the Hawks seemed hellbent on keeping the puck anywhere but the right side against the Hawks PP1. The good guys need an alternative for when their solid gold setup can’t get in gear.
One of the things I was really impressed by while watching Tampa’s power play in the playoffs last year was how they could fairly consistently feed Stamkos sitting in the high slot. I tip my cap to the Lightening power play for being able to work the puck into one of the most dangerous zones and feeding possibly the league’s most dangerous sharp shooter and there’s no guarantee that the Hawks could replicate that success but it seems to me that if you’re going to insist on having Sharp play the point why not try to let him slip into the high slot and try the Lightening approach. Not all the time, not even most of the time but often enough to give the opposition a different and equally dangerous look to open up the Kaner on the half boards play.
Kind of like running the ball on occasion to set up the pass.
