Good article by the BBC on fighting
Presents both sides fairly well, but won’t tell you too much you don’t already know. Decent overview of the whole situation, though: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-16383129.

Meh
Not sure what to think of the article, seemed slanted toward banning fighting rather then a neutral presentation of an issue that is being discussed in the NHL, Canada and the US.

Odds on Saad being called up as a Black Ace?
Not sure if his contract allows for it, but at least we can be reasonably assured that he won’t be dealt this year.
Once he was returned to the OHL before he reached the 10 game mark
He cannot return to the NHL until the Junior Season is over. So until March-April Saad is not even a consideration for a callup. After their season is over the Hawks would then need to strongly consider if burning a year of his deal is worth a handfull of hopefully non-playoff impacting games.

pretty good, IMO.
Saginaw has little hopes to making the playoffs, so he’ll be eligible quicker than his team would want him to be.
Does it matter
From what I have read it said the “Junior Season” not “that player team’s Junior Season”. He would still be eligible to be loaned by Saginaw to a playoff team if they desired (which does not require Blackhawks okay). If this is the case, Late April would be most likley of being eligable.

D.H. can better address this specific question...
but I’d venture to guess he’d be free to join the Hawks as soon as Saginaw’s season was over.
I do know that Saad only played 2 games for the Hawks. He’s technically available for 7 more and as a black ace, he wouldn’t be playing anyways.
That's how I see it

18 and 19 year olds
As TMFF mentioned the “returning” of 18 and 19 year olds to their Junior Team is from an agreement between the two teams. This was done to allow players in Juniors to get drafted.
8.7 (a) of the CBA talks about the NHL team needing to “offer” a player back to their original Junior team. This needs to be done if they don’t stay on their NHL team’s active roster. It is an offer but the offer is almost always accepted. In theory though, a player not accepted back to their Junior team would then be allowed to go to the AHL.
8.7 © is when a player (whose team has concluded their season) can now be loaned to an AHL team. I don’t believe a player is precluded from going back to their NHL team at this point. It simply isn’t done though. You aren’t going to blow a year off of a players EL contract simply to get a couple more games in before the end of the season.
So when the players Junior team is done, as far as I understand it, yes Saad can be a “Black Ace.” It is mostly a symbolic position anyway. Only Players actually on the playing roster get credit for an NHL Game. So “Black Aces” do NOT get credit for NHL experience or go against their (10) NHL game limit.
I wish they would release that 1995 agreement
And I hate the CBA at times, it is a bitch to understand on things like this.

Somethings are fairly clear,
But this part is pure Hot-Shit! The CBA gives some details but refers you to an agreement for the rest and we have none of the true details on.
But I am still curious if Saad can be loaned to another Junior team for the Memorial Cup Run, and if it does require CHI approval or not?
by Toews-makes-funny-faces on Jan 18, 2012 4:54 PM CST up reply actions
I'm fairly certain
they need the big club’s approval. Seems that whenever a player gets loaned to another team, the receiving team always thanks the parent organization for their “trust”.
I’d also look into the OHL bylaws to see if a team is allowed to borrow a player from another team during the playoffs. I’d be surprised if it was allowed.
I tried
refered back to “the agreement” again. Fuckers!

Reading the CBA
It appears the highest he can go is to be loaned to Rockford only (part 8.7.©). It does not matter now how many games he has played, he cannot be recalled from the Juniors like a player from the AHL can be. Once he was returned he was done with the Hawks until the conclussion of the OHL (not his OHL team) Season. In fact after reading other parts, 8.7.(a) appears to allow other Junior teams to “claim” his services prior to a being loaned to a minor league team.
by Toews-makes-funny-faces on Jan 18, 2012 10:27 AM CST up reply actions
To amplify even more
The OHL and QMJHL are also tied to the “May 2, 1995” CHL/NHL agreement stating basically. Any Junior eligible player NOT playing in the NHL must be returned to the Junior League.
This explain section 8.7(a), meaning before Saad could even go to Rockford, every QMHJL, OHL and CHL would beable to claim his services as a loan for their own playoff run. If he clears this he could ONLY be loaned to the AHL.
Given how good Saad it is not likely he would not be claimed by another Junior team for their playoff run.
by Toews-makes-funny-faces on Jan 18, 2012 10:34 AM CST up reply actions
Saad’s contract is obviously with the JR. squad that drafted him (if not playing with the Hawks).
I guess where I’m having an issue with what you’re saying is there’s nothing explicitly in the rules I’ve read that prohibit him from coming back up to the big club (although the Hawks have the option of sending him to Rockford after the Jr. season is over). Which rule are you looking at?
You are right kinda
It refers you back to that “May 2, 1995” agreement which is not available to the public. But what I have been able to find about it is, once a player is returned he must stay in the Juniors until the end of the Junior season. I have not been able to find a single player being recalled from the Juniors, which must imply it is prohibited by that 1995 agreement (we can’t read). Also included is probably the full process of how a player is loaned first to the Junior league teams, then the NHL teams minor league affiliate. The “claim” part in 8.7(a) is in regards to other Junior teams claiming his services, section 9 in parts kinda eludes to this a little more, but also refers directly back to the 1995 agreement.
Other things I have read about this arangement have discussed it would probably be circumvention of the CBA to not follow the 1995 agreement and the comissioner in the CBA is given authority to investigate issue in regards to that agreement.
by Toews-makes-funny-faces on Jan 18, 2012 11:01 AM CST up reply actions
Well, from everything I’ve read, Saad can come up for “emergency” reasons (rash of injuries to the Hawks?) or after his Jr. season ends. Nothing from rule 8.7 I’ve read states otherwise.
Hopefully someone who has a very clear understanding of the situation can chime in.
This is something for the Hawks, NHL and OHL to figure out
Without knowing what the exact provisions of that 1995 agreement the NHL and CHL made, that now also applies to the OHL and QMJHL per the CBA, I do not think we can get a clear answer. Why this agreement is not disclosed is anybody’s guess, but it is really that agreement that has the real answer to these questions and not the CBA as it stands.
by Toews-makes-funny-faces on Jan 18, 2012 11:18 AM CST up reply actions
Yeah the emergency rule exists
but I’ve only ever seen it come to fruition once with a team drafted CHL eligible player (that I can recall) and it seems that the emergency ruling makes it very difficult for a team to justify. Last year there were rustlings that the Kings wanted Schenn on emergency call-up after Kopitar went down but the rule almost enters a grey area where the team has to substantiate it’s claim that nobody else on their AHL roster could fill in (which is a total crock IMO). The case I’m thinking of involved a a drafted junior goalie being called up to the Habs on an emergency basis due to an AHL injury. It’s very similar in application to the rule that nearly allowed that 51 year old beer-leaguer to be called up to the Wilds, but with specific allowance for drafted junior eligle players. I wish I could remember the kids name but I’m drawing a blank.
You are next.
right...
i believe it was a goalie situation, too (the Hab’s situation).
I should also clarify that the “crock” comment comes from the Kings even attempting to substantiate the belief that Schenn could fill in better than an AHL’er during Kopitar’s absence.
I can see emergency working with a couple goalie injuries at various organizational levels but virtually never with any skating position.
You are next.
My thoughts too
When I came across that a few times. It does not matter how crappy the AHL or ECHL guys are, if they can play and have the roster spots (on the AHL/ECHL teams) for it, too bad. The Junior guy stays put.
by Toews-makes-funny-faces on Jan 18, 2012 12:06 PM CST up reply actions
My understanding has always been
that as soon as a players junior team’s season has ended (by virtue of failing to make the playoffs or being eliminated from the playoffs) he becomes eligible for the AHL regular/post season or the NHL post-season. I’ve never even heard anything to the degree of a junior player being claimed via "loan" by any other junior team once his own team’s season has ended. I’m not saying it may not be technically true, but it’s never even been broached as a topic for discussion on TSN/Sportsnet and they cover junior results/issues almost nightly.
Normally a junior age player is not eligible for the AHL unless they turn 20 before December 31st of the season in question or have played 4 full seasons in the CHL (a full season consisting of 25 games versus NCAA eligibility requirement of dressing for one game or signing of a standard player agreement).
You are next.
this pretty much jives with how the rules in the CBA is written. While Saginaw could technically loan him out to other squads according to the rules (I’m assuming they’d also need the Blackhawk’s permission), I’m not really seeing a scenario in that occuring (how about Anaheim loan us Perry and Montreal give us Suban for this year’s playoffs?).
Meh
Loaning players in the Minor leagues and Juniors is actually quiet common so players get more experience. Boorgard (sp?) for instance I remember him and a few other being loaned to the Wolves during one of their Championship runs. Tracking AHL moves in April-May I see this regularly occur, one team loaning a player to another team. I think their is a league limit, but it happening is not a “rare” or “uncommon” occurring at all, but happens often.
Again, it is too bad we can not see what the provisions of that 1995 agreement are, but the CBA is NOT the authority on this subject, it is that agreement we cannot see. The CBA only touches on minor parts such as the loaning of players (kinda at most) and applies that agreement to the WHL, OHL and QMJHL. The real meat of this subject and rules dealing with it are in that agreement.
Until we can see that agreement, or produce even one example of a player from the Juniors being recalled prior to the ending of the Junior season (lest the emergency recall already covered) because I could not find one example of a player being recalled from the Juniors directly to the NHL, I would not expect Saad to even be a thought until the Playoffs are already underway.
by Toews-makes-funny-faces on Jan 18, 2012 3:10 PM CST up reply actions
so...
you see a plausible scenario in where Saginaw loans Saad out instead of him coming up to the big club? Do tell me more, please.
IDK
I wish I had a clear answer, I would really like to see what that agreement says.
Your question does not however come from the direction I am. Your question is more of “Why would the Hawks allow him to be loaned when they can call him up”. This is not my position in that statement.
My position was, can he be recalled before the end of the OHL season, I was presuming no. But he could be available to be loaned out to another team running for the MC. I was not looking at it from a point of “Why would they loan” rather from “They can’t recall, so why NOT loan”.
I was also only pointing out, loaning in the minors and such is NOT rare but common. So, under those presumptions, 1. He could not be recalled. 2. He was available for Loan 3. The Hawks could not reassign to the NHL without first offering him up for loan, I stand by my statement, it would be wise to offer him up for more playing time.
Now if those presumptions are wrong, then that changes the whole scenario and how I would view it.
by Toews-makes-funny-faces on Jan 18, 2012 4:59 PM CST up reply actions
no
that’s not my position but I do see little reason to loan him out when he doesn’t have problems with teammates, which IMO is the #1 reason to swap a guy from one system to another.
No no no
You are completely missing what I am saying in “Loaning”. Saginaw (or Hawks by proxy) loan him to another team AFTER Saginaw is done, not before. I would do this ONLY if Saginaw is done AND he cannot be recalled to the NHL or assigned to the AHL per the CBA and the “agreement”. Do this just to get him more, and frankly higher tempo/quality playing time before he CAN be recalled NOT in lieu of it, unless the HAwks do not want to burn a year of his EL-SPC. They would have to gauge if letting him sit in the press box is better for him over playing in games.
If he can be assigned to the Rock, by all means DO THAT!, Unless it would kick in the first year of his EL-SPC. If that is the case, then that would need to be assessed as worth the while first.
I am not saying loan him now, just because, Loan him out if he can’t be recalled or you do not want to burn a year of his EL-SPC or just want to give him more ice time instead of being in the press box.
If he can be recalled and the Hawks NEED him, recall him and burn it by all means.

no no no no no no
AHL games count towards the entry level contract. I may be wrong about this, but I am 73.59% sure I’m right. So, you could technically put him in Rockford but the logistics are complicated enough to staying away from this option.
You’d also have to look at how OHL and other junior leagues handle playoff rosters. I would imagine they have rules that would prohibit team A or team C from picking up Saad and other prospects for just the playoffs.
I got what you are saying
And pointed out the Rockford part and his EL-SPC;
“If he can be assigned to the Rock, by all means DO THAT!, Unless it would kick in the first year of his EL-SPC. If that is the case, then that would need to be assessed as worth the while first.”
There are rules, you can find them for Junior players not drafted, but once they have been claimed by an NHL team, the rules are locked behind closed doors, and what we have in the CBA does not adress it directly, so who the Fuck knows. I guess natural inclination would say “prohibit team A or team C from picking up Saad and other prospects for just the playoffs.”, however look at the AHL just this happens every year with every playoff team, players are loaned from an eliminated team to a team still playing.
by Toews-makes-funny-faces on Jan 18, 2012 5:33 PM CST up reply actions
More CBA and Junior stuff.
AHL games count as Professional Games. The 10 limit is on NHL Games only (NHL season plus nhl playoffs).
I’m assuming the Junior leagues have a trade deadline just like pretty much every other league. You might want to ask Bartl on this but it was my understanding that Beach got Traded in Juniors. So trades during the season yes, after a team is done with their season, uh, no. I do not know what involvement the NHL Team has in those trades. You are right, that information is not on the web.
The “loaning” comes from the NHL side, btw. Not the Junior teams side. So loaning a player from juniors to an AHL team comes from the NHL team’s decisions.
So
If the Rock does not hurt him on his EL-SPC and when it starts, that is the best place to put him IMO. Better then sitting in the Box, well until the Hogs get eliminated.

Don’t see them making the playoffs. They’re currently 15th out of 15 teams in the conference.
So, yeah. Don’t see an issue with him going to Rockford until season’s end and then ending up a black ace on the Hawks when that time comes (if it’s deserved).
You are going to hate me for this one

Sorry TMFF
As far as I understand it, that is all information in those inter league agreements. None of which, I believe, are online.
btw
Saginaw’s season ends a full 3 weeks before the Hawks season ends. Even if Saginaw makes the playoffs, the only way Saad isn’t available is if his team makes it to the second round.
In short, chances are decent to good that he’ll be available.
This thread is very long so...
…I’m just placing this comment at the bottom for convenience sake (rather than as a direct response to aero).
Regarding junior movement (within the CHL)… the trade deadline is early January every year and has been for as long as I can remember. This past year it was on January 10th. They do this so that kids can still get situated into their high-school classes without much disruption. Also, there is a league wide moratorium on trades during the Christmas break so the kids can spend time with family. Also, a player registered in post secondary education (college, tech school, university) cannot be traded during the season. Again, I’ve never heard of players being loaned within the junior ranks. You do see some really lop-sided trades (e.g. drafted 1st rounder for two 15 year-olds and Bantam draft picks) but those are almost always involving teams hosting or making a run at the Mem Cup. I would think teams not on the end of those beneficial loans (if allowed) would, justifiably, have a major grievance with the league for allowing another team to artificially strengthen themselves. A big playoff run is really big money for CHL teams.
An example of a player that went straight from a completed junior season, right to the NHL playoffs was Jarome Iginla in ’96. Hawks swept the Flames (I was there with my broom) where Iggy scored in his debut (game #3), playing two games in total (games 3 & 4).
As far as CHL to AHL loans are concerned… that happens all the time. Kyle Beach went from The Bridge to Rockford (regular season and playoffs) in ’09 and from Spokane to Rockford (regular season and playoffs) in ’10
You are next.

So many games they have no business winning and he gets it done for them. New look on the PP - hopefully this works.
Quenneville tried some new looks with his power-play units on Tuesday. He had forwards Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Shaw on one unit with Brent Seabrook and Steve Montador on the point while Bolland, Hossa, Brunette, Duncan Keith and Nick Leddy made up the second group. The right-handed Montador is the new addition on the point. He was previously playing in the slot but he took Sharp’s spot on the left side of the blue line — at least in practice.

This scared the crap out of me in that article:
“Hawks defensemen have just one power-play goal combined on the season from the point.”
That has to be last in the league by a significant margin, and it shows maybe two things—how one-dimensional our PP has become, and of course how ill-suited to the PP our defense is. JMH hints that part of this is having one of the point positions handled by a forward, but it’s still telling, I think.

Seaghdh of course...Note meaning of name
Meanings and history of the name Shaw:
From either the Old English, meaning “Woodland,” or an Anglicized form of “Seaghdh” or “Seaghdha,” which mean “hawk-like” in Scottish and Irish Gaelic, respectively.

I'm sticking with

This is hockey related, I swear! Not OT!
Everyone’s favorite Canucks fan, Michael Buble, has teamed up with housewives everywhere and is now schleping his own White Zinfandel. I’m going to assume this is the official drink of the Vancouver Canucks now. Fits right in with that whole turtle persona.
There’s no way anyone can convince me that Hank and Dank don’t have at least 3 of those in their European carry-alls.

in the Stanley Cup last year when he was getting punched in the face by Bradley marchand, he got really pissssed at the ref and swore.

Really?
I thought it was funny. The first time it was an accident, but when Honk didn’t do anything I think Joe realised he could push his buttons. But I also think anything directed at the Sedin’s is worth doing…
You are next.
the first time wasn't an accident
he was making a reference to something that happened earlier in the game i think

I hate seeing an opponent in our Fantasy League playing either one of those hose bags.
Seems like you are always running up against a multi point game and PP points.

So any word on who is in net for Buffalo?
Miller went 25 minutes against Scum and Enroth shut them out the rest of the way.
frustration runneth over
I don’t think you go from being one of the best to a “head case” in one year.
Does anyone know if he’s letting in soft goals? I guess we’ll bea able to read a bit about the situation in tonights Committed Indian in the “Know thy Enemy” section -
"head case"
He got walloped this year. In the head.
I’d take Miller in a second, next year.
Hold My Stones
In the 30 thoughts
article, the author says that the Hawks have interest in Derick Barassard from the Blue Jackets. Looking at his stats, my question is why? He doesn’t seem like an improvement over what we already have. At least he doesn’t seem like the missing piece. Any ideas?

Plays centre
That’s about it. His FO% is under 50 (46.8) and his peripheral numbers aren’t great. Plus, he’s on the hook for $3.2M for two seasons after this one.
by JesusMarianHossa on Jan 18, 2012 10:46 AM CST up reply actions
That was my inital reaction too
Those numbers are not much better than what Kruger is putting up and worse than Mayers (granted different role). And, at least, Kruger and Mayers play on the PK.
