Oilers @ Blackhawks - Third Period Thread
Some brand new steps and some weight to lose. Gonna roll this joint, gonna get down low. Round and round and round we'll go. Wham, Bam, Birmingham, Alabam' don't give a damn. Little Rock and I'm fit to top. Ahhh, let it rock.

Dear Blackhawks:
Please Score lots of goals in the 3rd period.
Thank you.

Phew, at leas the Canucks tied things up.
They capitalized on a… wait, let me check… it’s called a ‘power play’? Apparently it gives one team an advantage and allows them to score relatively easily.
Blackhawks bleed Red & White.
We are all Canucks...including Toews, Sharp, Keith, Seabrook, ...need I go on?
a power play?
Never heard of it…. Or seen it for that matter

During the second period break.
Specifically the slowness to return to the D zone after the blue line turnover that led to Ed’s 3rd goal. Quoting "That would not have happened against the Red Wings because you know they have the skill. Well guess what, so does Edmonton.

This game is being lost because the ‘Hawks lack size, physicality, and the snarl that the likes of Ladd, Byfuglien (regardless of what the 3 tell you he was important to the Cup run), and Brouwer (although I’m not his biggest fan).
All the ‘Hawks have is Bickell and this team will be eaten alive come playoff time if Stan Bowman doesn’t address this by February. The ‘Hawks are the Washington Capitals of the West where they love to run up and down the ice but never the little things that enables them to win. Not grit, no championships. It’s that simple.

I agree.
You asked why people are praising Toews, while not giving Kane credit for his earlier performance.
Its because starting off hot and cooling down isn’t as impressive as starting off cool and heating up, performing better and better as the games get more and more intense and highly competitive.
Blackhawks bleed Red & White.
We are all Canucks...including Toews, Sharp, Keith, Seabrook, ...need I go on?
whether its now or later, toews has a bad game or month and it always gets handwaved away
but with anyone else they get put on the trading block immediately. Its a double standard I don’t like but maybe that’s just me.

Butting in but I totally agree
He seems to get it the worst from the fans and the haters whenever he gets on a slump. Granted, his nine goals right now are a bit of a disappointment, but he’s still on pace for ~57 assists.
Also, considering how he was tossed around all season from center to wing and then back to center again, all after recovering from wrist surgery… not going to say the slump is justified, but I’m willing to let this play out for a while longer and give him the benefit of the doubt that he will turn this around before saying he’s a useless piece on the team that needs to be traded.
why indeed

That was kind of my point
But hearing all this “TRADE HIM” from various fans and blogs just because he’s not producing makes me roll my eyes until they feel like they’re going to pop out.
I'll butt in too
I’m pretty sure there are 29 other teams that would love to have Kane, confidence is a great thing to have and right now Kane doesn’t have it, score a lucky goal or 2 and he’ll be fine
he doesn't need a lucky goal
he’ll score one with skill
SCH moderator (may the force be with me) and tweets @tivogoddess
His confidence is definitely an issue
Because he’s just waiting too damn long for those shots otherwise he’d have a handful of goals already.
At this point, I’ll take even an EN from him if it means it gets his confidence up. You can see the frustration but I really think it’s just a matter of time before the pucks start going in.
December 18 against the Flames
And it was a PPG too…
so 6 games ago. and he's had at least 2 assists since then, maybe more?

3 or 4 assists I think
But they aren’t all primary assists, or major plays. He’s slowly picking up assists, but I’d rather see a confident Kane play but not produce as much than someone that quietly collects points.
He was doing so well with Hossa at the start, defensively much better and still confident even on a slump that maybe he just needs to play with Hossa again to get the spark going.
yeah agree. i do see him making some good plays, but it hasn't been leading to anything
even tonight, he’s protecting the puck really well, holding on to it through a bunch of defenders – gets to the net, and nothing. he just needs to finish it off and quickly.
he really was on a roll until hossa got moved to spark toews. i’m hoping hossa goes back to his line – even the few seconds they had tonight that was due to a line change looked really good in that short time.

Hossa is essentially the best fit for Kane at center
Because he’s probably more comfortable because of how defensively responsible Hossa is, and that in itself probably makes his game better because he’s more at ease, which results in better plays and decisions.
He should just shut down his brain completely when he plays so that there’s no more hesitation and just play based on instincts alone.
I see the same thing
he waits, waits, waits and then nothing, I understand patience with the puck but sometimes you gotta just let it fly
like the Seabs goal the other day
Just shoot it – it might get through
SCH moderator (may the force be with me) and tweets @tivogoddess
He looks scared to make a play
Because he doesn’t want to give up the chance, but that’s ultimately what he does by waiting for support. He really needs someone to give him a pep talk or something and give him something to be more confident with his game.
yea me to. anything to get it going
i feel like he either waits to pass, or to get the perfect placement to get to the net. but he’s just gotta let it fly – let someone else get the rebound if need be. But its like a vicious circle – he’s waiting to shoot because he’s not confident in his ability to shoot to get a goal, and he’s not getting goals because he’s not shooting.

It’s no longer even a debate as to who the better player is and in a couple of more years the ’Hawks will make sure Toews is taken care of whereas Kane may be laft in limbo and possibly dealt.

Kane is not allowed to be in a slump according to many here while Toews can start every year in one and people usually don’t care.
I love Kane’s effort and even if he needs to come out of his slump I am happy as fuck to have him signed for the next three years at 6.2M. And to have Toews too.

While I can't speak for anybody else
I understand that players have slumps and that it’s just a part of the game. I think some people just, maybe not expected, but were looking for Kane to make that jump (whatever he considers it to be) that he talked about in the offseason and preseason.
Sure he hasn’t produced goal wise like he has in past seasons, but he has been producing more in the helper column than I remember. Yes I am frustrated with his lack of scoring and what seems to me some time a hesitancy to shoot, but I know that eventually the dam will break. I just hope it’s sooner than later.
No worries, this was the plan all along!
Yeah I hear what you are saying but imo,
1) still 42 games left to go in the season, and he can pick this up significantly still
2) if i wasn’t seeing an effort from him, i would be pissed/upset, but i don’t. i see him working hard and doing better defensively (though still with some lapses), but things aren’t going his way.
3) he started out and slowed down, which is unfortunately, but I highly doubt things will stay this way, and as you said, the assists are still coming
4) there was actually an article with quotes from him talking about the slump and his confidence. i do see some of that hesitance to shoot – but i see him taking more shots now, so that’s a step in the right direction.

players go through scoring droughts...
heck, look at the drought Kopitar just broke out of. 17 games without a goal.
Personally, I’m happy to see Kane looking better these past few games. And his defensive game isn’t the mess it has been in years past.
I agree
I see Kane as more of a passer and playmaker than goal scorer anyway, though he’s a very good shooter. I was really trying to get hawksXX to defend another of his ridiculous, bombastic assertions. There are only 29 other teams in the league who would love to have Patrick Kane at $6.3 million.
i know on the twitters
Fels said he’s ready for the Kane at center to be done, and once we get a 2nd line center that’s fine by me. But I actually think he’s looked better there then at wing (defensively/possession/chances with the puck) then he did on Tazer’s wing (which is unfortunately since I love ddn together). I don’t know if my eyetest is failing me on that though.
Also, he had a good shift with Hossa I thought, which was just due to timing on a line change. So hoping for more of that.

me too...
I think Kane looks fine at center. Not sure if it’s the long-term solution we need, but he’s been most successful at the C position this year. Besides, it’s not the scoring that seems to be the issue this year. Our special teams has decided to again go on an extended vacation.
Take Kane off the PP and replace him with someone (say Brunette) that will go to the front of the net and screen the goaltender so he doesn’t see every shot.
In the NHL if they see it, they’ll most likely stop it.
Proud fan of the 2010 Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks and the 2010 Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers.
"You cannot dream yourself into a character; you must hammer and forge yourself into one."
Remove one of the best passers in the league from the PP
Not to mention that he’s among the best playmakers, puckhandlers and skaters, and this will help the power play?
They need bodies around the net.
On the PP and 5-5. There were a boat load of rebounds given up by Dubnyk but not a Hawk within 25ft to put one back on goal.
No worries, this was the plan all along!
Toews is better at that and controlling the puck along the boards and fighting for loose pucks on dump-ins. Hossa strikes more fear into the opposition’s PK as he can pass and shoot and Brunette can distract the goaltender which would make the Sharp one-timer much more effective.
PP efficiency is more than about passing the puck as it is retrieval and willingness to outwork your opponent.
Proud fan of the 2010 Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks and the 2010 Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers.
"You cannot dream yourself into a character; you must hammer and forge yourself into one."
What is the "that" you're referring to?
You’re saying Toews is a better passer and playmaker than Kane? Also, I agree that PP efficiency is obviously not merely a function of passing. My question was how removing someone of Kane’s skill level from the PP unit would possibly be helpful? That has nothing to do with other player’s roles or capabilities. Perhaps what you intended to say was you’d like to see Kane moved to the second PP unit?
Definitely agree with your comment
But I wouldn’t take Kane off the PP completely. Instead, split the skill and the grit to better balance the two units; there’s no need to shove all the skill guys on the first unit.
Half the time, the PP spends way too much time trying to get set up and make the perfect play. What they need is simple plays, getting bodies to the net and fighting puck battles (just like you said). I wouldn’t mind seeing him shift down onto the second unit though with Bolland though.
well our first unit is
toews, hossa, kane, sharp, keith right? if you even take Hossa out and put him more consistently on the 2nd with Bolland – it evens things out among the 2 units in terms of good passers, players who can help with our puck possession, and people who can screen the goalie (assuming Stalberg is on the 2nd unit)

Rumours are starting to stir for huge shake-up on Ducks roster if things don't spark
And Getzlaf has now joined the mix. I mentioned it before, but it was just my own wish at that point, but I think there’s a pretty good chance he might get shipped out if the Ducks don’t start winning some games. They’ll have to break up the Perry-Getzlaf duo, but they’ve started to play on separate lines, and if that doesn’t get Getzlaf out of his slump, he could go.
If Getzlaf wanted to, he could be really good, and a trade may just be the wake-up call he needs.
i've heard that as well, but wasn't sure how legit of a rumor it was. would be interesting if true

Right...
…they only have Corey Perry, Bobby Ryan and Teemu Selanne….isn’t he also the Captain of that “bad team” who is often accused of being lax defensively? And who typically misses 15 games a year due to injury?
He suffered a few bad injuries
But Getzlaf is far from your accident-prone player and would be a solid addition to the Hawks as a second line center.
However, he would not be an equal trade for Kane, and it’s not what they need anyways (not to say they wouldn’t want Kane, but what they need is some solid blue-liners).

Proud fan of the 2010 Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks and the 2010 Super Bowl Champion Green Bay Packers.
"You cannot dream yourself into a character; you must hammer and forge yourself into one."
It depends on what you need
Getzlaf is a power forward that’s better two-way while Kane is a solid offensive player. Both are on a slump, but if both are on their A-game, they are both significant contriibuters to their team
Goal scoring slump only
His pace has slowed, but he’s still almost a point a game. Month of December plus tonight, it’s 14 games 2 G 10 A 12 PTS +/- 0 43 SOG.
I see it more as a confidence issue than anything
Both are having major confidence issues right now and can’t do their job. Getzlaf isn’t the two-way player he can be, screwing up plays he’s usually ace at, and Kane can’t put the puck into the back of the net. Only difference is, Kane has a bunch of confident teammates to help him out; the entire Ducks roster apart from Selanne are down in the dumps.
Oh great

The point is this team’s ability to ‘get up’ for the big game and ‘let down’ afterwards. It is a disturbing trend that is NOT the mark of a champion. The Hawks biggest problems are philosophical and mental, not physical. They have the talent.

I'm honestly more upset over tonight's performance
Than our loss to Vancouver during the playoffs. This continues to be a “could be” team. Carbom starts the game with his second assist in two games. He could be a productive part of the team. Instead he makes a dangerous play that changes the face of the team. Waiting for that defining “We’re the Blackhawks and that’s our cup” moment.

and being beaten by a better or luckier team,
And loosing to what is clearly an inferior team because you weren’t mentally ready to play 60 minutes of hockey.

I'm not a big believer in having "goon" type players if that is what you are considering to be grit
I know many are. I realize that you have to be willing to make the big hits, and even take the bit hits. I don’t want my team to be pushed around, but I also don’t want to be known as a team like the Broadstreet Bullies. I would much rather see speed and skill in the game. I think we can make it out of the West with what we have. Fix the PP. Boy if the PP could start scoring we would win the games like tonight – without being a bunch of bruisers.

Why they have gone back
to that back door PP every time is beyond me. What happened to bombing it from the point? That was working for a while.
And when was the last time this team got a goal from a rebound in the dirty area? I know Rattlehead followed up his shot the other night, but I can’t remember any goals they have gotten off of scrums around the net.

Honestly
Looked like every cross-ice one-timer had a camped-out goalie at the other end waiting to swallow the puck. I’d rather curse bad luck than lack of shots.

Renney on R-NH: “I don’t know exactly what happened… if there was a sniper in the press box, b/c he just fell down.”
I know he’s hurt, but lol.
And from Jesse Rogers
Give Q a lot of credit…said refs were right on with Carcillo call and even gave them an out on Hammer high stick…those can be judgement calls sometimes and he said he wasnt sure if that was a penalty
Some of the Hawks said they didn’t see it, Mayers said it was questionable – but I’m assuming he didn’t really see it either. But Q’s response is what I like to see, and owning it.

In defence of Vancouver (and I can’t believe I’m doing this), the officiating has been atrocious all year within the NHL and it needs to be corrected rather than pfft off and thought of as nothing is wrong which is what the commissioner and his cronies always seem to do.

I’m not sure if NBC got together with the refs," said Tortorella, after the Rangers’ 3-2 victory on Monday, regarding Ian Walsh and Dennis LaRue.
“It started with the non-call [when] Gabby was pitch-forked in the stomach, and then everything starts going against us. They’re two good referees; I thought the game was refereed horribly. So I’m not sure what happened there. Maybe they wanted to get it to an overtime. I’m not sure if they have meetings about that or what. But we stood in there. They’re good guys. Speaking of suspensions
would it be too over the top for the standard to be – instead of Shanahan making judgement calls on everything, which leads to some baffling non suspensions and reasons, everything has a certain criteria:
boarding gets x games, charging gets y games, head hit gets z games – right off the bat. THEN shanahan can add time on top of that depending on history, injury, etc…? I feel like that would be more effective then him choosing an arbitrary # of games based on criteria that sometimes seems to be pulled out of thin air.
"Well now you're just talking like Foghorn Leghorn!"
Might be a better system

All of this trade Patrick Kane end of the world talk is so stupid.
They played shitty tonight. They finally decided to bring it, in my eyes, with about 10 minutes left in the third. One conversion on a powerplay and it’s a different game. I think you have to look at coaching and strategy at this point. Going through one enormous drought in a season is tough but going through what could be the start of a second is a bit much.
Not to mention the way we keep going back to the back door bullshit and the cutesy passing is disgusting. The crowd also sucked ass tonight too. Once Edmonton got the lead I’m pretty sure I was the only one in section 310 still cheering them on.
On another note, too, what do you do to teach this team to bring it every game? This is a problem that developed at the end of the 09-10 season (in my eyes), got out of hand last year, and is a dirty, sneaky pest this year. I can understand a game or two like that but this team seems to have a fundamental mental (say that ten times fast) problem with being in the right mindset. I hate to drag them up but look at teams like Vancouver and Boston, they tend to bring the effort consistently.
Our third line needs to get going too. If anything could spark this team it would be some third line scoring. I don’t know if it’s a chemistry thing, injury thing, or something more but that line needs to get going.
I would really like the Kane at center experiment to end. Hopefully when Kruger comes back that will be the case. I see Kane being so much more lethal on Toews wing.
Time will tell.
Let’s go Hawks!
Im not sure who said
we should trade patrick kane, but thats nonsense. Someone (one of the beats I believe or Brian hedger) tweeted during the game that kane actually did have strep throat and he lost muscle mass and it hit him pretty hard. He said hes just now putting the weight back on. Of the roughly 765 times patrick kane has been diagnosed with “Strep throat” can it be reasonable to believe that he actually had it this time and not vomit mouth?
that being said tonights game really pissed me off because im sick of seeing this team give up easy goals to teams because of people being lazy. either not being active on defense, more than one man covering someone along the walls, or someone lagging behind on d is getting quite old. All i can think back is the Nashville series in 2010 and how almost every single play one of their d men was lifting sticks or fighting for position around the net. there has been a bit of downturn in the d play even for marlboro 72.

Hawks61 was saying it, I think.
And I remember that series. In regards to fighting for it am I the only one who thought Crawford should have had that goal that Eager scored?
Yeah I do agree
that crawford could have had the eager goal and the PP goal where hammer got high sticked, but some of the other were defense lettign him down big time.

Yeah, and there is no way he lost muscle mass.
losing weight I can see, but there is no way he would lose muscle mass from a case of strep.
Strep is contagious for the first few days (3-5) after you have been exposed. Once symptoms appear you are still contagious but not as bad since your body’s immune system has begun to mobilize and attack. After taking an antibiotic for 24 hours the person is no longer considered to be contagious.
No worries, this was the plan all along!
if you are sick and not eating (eating on strep throat is miserable).
you will lose muscle mass from lack of nutrition. especially for a little guy like kane who most likely struggles to keep weight on. why is this so hard?

worst illness I've ever had
I wanted to die (literally). The throat pain is agonizing but when you add in 100+ fever + every muscle and bone in your body aching + not being able to eat or move for days, and it’s hands down the worst I’ve ever felt. I could see it taking away an athlete’s muscle mass for sure, although I’m not sure it would be substantial.

Well, talk to everyone on Thursday.
Let’s hope for a better outcome. Good night all.
No worries, this was the plan all along!
There are several illnesses that can cause
wasting. Pneumonia can be very bad especially in the young, old or infirm. I had malaria in 1992 and lost nearly 21 lbs in just over 10 days. However, much of the weight that is lost during extended illnesses can be attributed to water loss. Fever leads to perspiration, sore throat leads to not drinking or eating due to pain which cause dehydration which causes the illness to become worse. It really takes a pretty significant illness or an unusually potent common illness with complications to cause or lead to loss of muscle mass.
No worries, this was the plan all along!
ah got it. maybe he said/meant weight and
Story got twisted to muscle mass

if he is not able to eat solid foods he will not be able to get the protein and nutrition that he needs to maintain his muscle mass. his metabolic rate is super human he needs more calories than an average joe.
if he is not eating solids (due to STREP THROAT) he would easily lose muscle mass. what to eat when you have strep throat

by Where Triples Go to Die on Jan 3, 2012 2:38 AM CST up reply actions
Not sure the article is completely relevant. It lacks, at the very least, quantitative analysis. If the muscle mass is not substantive, as aero guesses, then the argument Kaner is doing poorly because he lost muscle mass has no support.
Doctors are humans and make mistakes, do not know everything, etc.—the same as magazine writers— but, given the choice between a vaguely-written opinion piece on keeping muscle mass for people solely intent on building muscle mass versus the opinion of a doctor who has to deal with these issues in his patients on a regular basis, I’d side with the doctor.
But in the end, I think it's going to come back to the Globetrotters, because if there's one thing they know, it's "globe-trotting!"

"Well now you're just talking like Foghorn Leghorn!"
I said to my girlfriend during the game
That if we’re not going to trust Lepisto the Hawks need a legit number 5/6 D-Man to pair with monty and to be there when he gets hurt. That way, if one goes down, Lepisto can serve as back up, hopefully. The coaching decision there was just stupid. Double shift someone then and box Scott.
Why would they have given him a contract
for this shit. If I’m Lepisto, I’m asking for a trade or to cut me lose on waivers or something. 5 minutes every 10 games or so would piss me off not to mention playing behind Scott on the depth chart.
No worries, this was the plan all along!
Patrick Kane
Am I wrong that Kane’s skillset is more playmaker e.g. slick passer and stick handler, than a pure goal scorer? I’ve always seen him as someone who might one day have 60 A’s in a season not someone who will come close to a 40/40 or 50/50 type year. If that’s the case, sign me up for the sniper type player. Bobby Ryan maybe might fit, (that’s been discussed ad nauseum though).
Someone who has a G to A ratio of > 1.0 is someone who the Hawks need.
That said, I’d put a sniper who can play the LW or C (Top 6 Forward) and a puck moving dman who can play well with Monty on the list of things I’d like to see the Hawks acquire. In a perfect world, we acquire Ryan Getzlaf or Zach Parise and then Gleason…. but the world’s not perfect
I think we need a 3rd pairing dman that Q can trust to put on the ice and a top 6 player (forward or center, i'm not picky)

Kane actually came into the league as a sniper
but he has always been able to pass the puck well and when you always play with a finisher like Toews, you tend to give him the puck. i think kane had like 80 some goals in junior
