Ah SCH

the one place where I don’t have to actively convince people why a Kane for Miller trade would get Bowman laughed out of the NHL. Seriously, feels like everywhere else I turn over the last week, I read someone post this (usually starts with “I know this would probably never happen…”), or hear it on the radio, or have some jackwagon “hawk fan” ask my opinion on it. At least in this meathead city, Ryan Miller is becoming the most wildly overrated player in the whole league. You’d think winning the shiny thing in OT would give the kid at least a 5 year grace period (hell, look at the rope they continue to give delicate genius KWilliams). I guess a (projected) 70 point season from a 23 year old is simply unacceptable these days. Sorry, had to vent in my safe place. I’m starting to fire away at well-intentioned relatives that I otherwise have nothing in common with.

by Code Name Duchess on Jan 20, 2012 10:42 AM CST reply actions

That's because these people see 10 weeks of hockey every 4 years.

The stanley cups and the olympics, so they think miller is the best goalie ever.

by lobster on Jan 20, 2012 10:59 AM CST up reply actions

Ryan Miller is among the best goaltenders in the world.

I don’t think I’m more irritated by anyone more than meatballs in Chicago. They have the shortest memories, the biggest mouths, and the dumbest arguments. Patrick Kane is not a lost cause simply because he’s had a stretch of 15 scoreless games. Ryan Miller, he of the dominating last few years, does not lose all of his talent simply because he’s had a poor half-season.

Honestly, most days I want to strangle the fuckers.

Rinne I don't trust.

One good year doesn’t have me sold. Tuuka is a backup goalie that again had one good year, any way you spin it.

I would be incredibly hesitant to pay any goalie 6 mil a year (bryzgalov).

Seriously?

'It's the Chicago Blackhawks, man!' -Jeremy freaking Roenick

by 10thMountainFire on Jan 20, 2012 11:22 AM CST up reply actions

You don't trust goalies after one year.

You would think luongo and bryzgalov would teach that lesson.

by lobster on Jan 20, 2012 11:28 AM CST up reply actions

I hate you for making me defend Luongo, but here goes:

Luongo had more than one good year. In fact, he had a lot. He just shits his pants in the post-season.

Bryzgalov also had several very good years.

Money aside, there are several goaltenders in the league that meet you original criteria-statement of ‘trust to do consistently well’. While Luongo and Bryzgalov are not among my choices, Rinne more than meets the standard and Rask is not too far off from being a standard-bearer in the coming years.

'It's the Chicago Blackhawks, man!' -Jeremy freaking Roenick

by 10thMountainFire on Jan 20, 2012 11:32 AM CST up reply actions

Listen

Rask is a frikin backup, sorry but I am not going to anoint him to the elite goalie level just yet. As far as rinne goes, again I am not convinced after one good year. The guy has a terrific, structured defensive system in front of him every night. I like him but I just don’t trust him to be an elite goalie every year.

If I were a gm my number one philosophy would probably be “don’t pay goalies 6 mil a year”.

by lobster on Jan 20, 2012 11:37 AM CST up reply actions

No one said anything about 'elite goalie'.

You said ‘trust consistently’. Rask is consistent.

Yes, to do well consistently.

As in year in and year out they are great goalies.

by lobster on Jan 20, 2012 11:40 AM CST up reply actions

I am talking about high paid, 6 mil goalies.

You said ‘trust consistently’.

by 10thMountainFire on Jan 20, 2012 11:41 AM CST up reply actions

Which is why I apologize for not making it clear.

What I meant was basically that I don’t like giving big contracts out to goalies.

You made it seem like you thought miller was a dominant goalie for multiple years in the league and while the trade was bad had earned his contract.

by lobster on Jan 20, 2012 11:43 AM CST up reply actions

I didn't say a word about contracts.

I don’t give a fuck what they earn. That’s for the GM to figure out with the cap. I care about having a consistent goaltender. Crawford has had a bad stretch but he’s still talented enough to pull out of it.

Pekka Rinne is definitely in the discussion.

Contracts matter

Whether or not a player lives up to a salary or beyond that salary is a big part of how valuable they are.

Quick and howard are twice as valuable to their teams because of the amount of salary they take up doing what they do.

Not at all what I said.

Look at what detroit has done with osgood and howard, look at chicago with crawford (despite a tough year for him). I like paying decent goalies 2.5 mil a year over 3 years rather than supposedly great goalies 7 mil a year over 7 years when they are already 29 years old.

by lobster on Jan 20, 2012 12:07 PM CST up reply actions

It's all about where teams choose

to invest their cap dollars. A team like the Hawks invests in dynamic forwards like Toews, Kane, Hossa and Sharp, with really strong defense in Keith and Seabs.

A team like the Predators doesn’t have the forward skill to invest in, so they spend their money on strong defense and goaltending. You spend where you have talent, and Rinne is one of those places. He is justifiably a member of their core.

I would take Rinne or Miller in a heartbeat, but it would mean trading one core player for another.

by 10thMountainFire on Jan 20, 2012 12:13 PM CST up reply actions

True.

I think the hawks/wings philosophy is a way to win championships and the preds philosophy is a way to make the playoffs though.

I love poille (primarily for drafting and developing), but that is a high price to pay. Maybe he couldn’t talk rinne down from there and knew he needed to resign him but that is the kind of money you pay a guy on july 1st, not when you are resigning him midseason.

by lobster on Jan 20, 2012 12:24 PM CST up reply actions

What was the cap hit

of the 2011 Cup-winning goalie? Certainly not in the range that would fit the Hawks/Wings philosophy.

There’s more than one way to skin a cat win a Cup.

by Katherine215 on Jan 20, 2012 12:30 PM CST up reply actions

That is neither here nor there.

I could bring up niemi’s cap hit and that changes things totally.

My philosophies don’t change just because a team won the cup a different way than I would want my team do it. The wings have said this same thing for years and it is one of the s they are the way they are today.

Not saying you can’t win a cup paying a goalie top dollar but the way nashville builds there team in general is to make the playoffs, not to win a championship. And they do a damn good job of building their team.

by lobster on Jan 20, 2012 12:33 PM CST up reply actions

You need to figure out what your point is.

Cap hit is now neither here nor there? Wasn’t your argument that you don’t think it’s worth it to pay goalies? And isn’t the goal always to win the Cup?

So a highly paid goalie wins the Cup and it’s neither here nor there?

by Katherine215 on Jan 20, 2012 12:47 PM CST up reply actions

Yeah, I am really all over the place and out of it today.

I guess I mainly think rinne is overpaid but I do also in general not like teams spending a lot of money at the goalie position.

There are plenty of reasons why I don’t like spending money on goalies is really the bottom line though. Not to say that top dollar goalies can’t win or can’t earn their money I just think it is riskier than top dollar contracts with players for the most part.

by lobster on Jan 20, 2012 12:55 PM CST up reply actions

Spending money on goalies= no good (in my opinion).

On the Subject of Illegal Streams

Transplanted Chicago native now living in Madison, WI. I have Gamecenter Live and it’s awesome, since I don’t run into the in/out of market problems, but it becomes wildly frustrating when the Hawks are on a national broadcast. A game on NBC proper can be streamed legally from their website, but anything on NBCS/VS. is blacked out, causing me to turn to the illegal sources.

Even more frustrating is when the game is on NHL Network. You own the channel, NHL, and I buy GCL from you. Why don’t I get those games? It makes no sense.

Now make like a tree and get out of here

I know it was from Wednesday's game but

I was watching at the Tilted Kilt and was away from the interwebz yesterday.

What was the reasoning for calling off the Shaw hand catch assist goal? Did they just determine it a hand pass and not see Shaw touch the puck after he put it down? It seemed really REALLY obvious to me during the replay. But couldn’t hear anything because the sounds of short plaid skirts and tight shirts kept distracting me.

That’s why I don’t understand why ref’s don’t call it a goal on the ice. Then it becomes reviewable and gives you a chance to get it right. Here, you make the wrong call and give yourself no wiggle room to correct it. Stupid is, is stupid does.

1) high paid goalies are bad because they can never justify their salary unless they win everything every year.

2) Detroit won cups with average goaltending and this therefore proves that you do not need a “elite” high paid goalie.

3) trade everyone……I threw that one in there

I disagree that Detroit won with average goaltending. They won in spite of goaltending because they had a strong defense first mentality in the forward core…and they had Lidstrom

Honestly, I doubt that the Ducks part with a single piece, least of all Bobby Ryan.

Considering that Selanne and Koivu are good as gone at the end of the season, the Ducks will have some cap space to retool.

Not to to reply fail

but that Rask discussion above is absurd. There’s not too many people on the Hawks (outside of the core) that I would not trade for Tuukka Rask.

In fact, I would move Leddy + Crawford for Rask and whomever the Bruins 6th defenceman is. I might add to that…. That’s a HF boards type proposal, it’s that bad, Rask isn’t being traded, and that’s because he’s probably a top 10 goaltender in all of hockey. Suggesting he isn’t is silly.
