Rearviewmirror: Hawks 3 - Panthers 1

The return of The Furious Five wasn't quite as eventful as we had anticipated, in fact, this might have been one of the more boring games this season. The most impressive and impactful return was that of dominant Patrick Kane, who we hadn't seen for quite some time.

With just a couple minutes left in the opening frame, the Hawks turned a big save from Ray Emery into a quality scoring chance. Stalberg slid a pass to Kane, who fired a lightning-quick tape to tape pass to a streaking Jonathan Toews; Toews blew by Garrison and lifted a backhander past Theodore to open the scoring. The 2nd powerplay unit, which has been easily the more effective of the two units lately, added an insurance tally with under twenty seconds left in the period. Keith fired a puck on net, which got by Theodore thanks to an Andrew Brunette screen.

The second period was the best of the three for both teams. There were some decent chances each way, but only Humpty Hump was able to dent the twine. Kane made a great individual play by stripping Weiss, chipping the puck past a pinching Kulikov, and showing patience as he waited for his opening to beat Theodore 5-hole.

The Panthers tried to make it interesting early in the third with a Garrison powerplay goal right off the draw. The Hawks two goal lead would prove to be enough though, as the Panthers couldn't muster the desperation rush that we were all expecting.

To the Bullets....

  • Foley and Edzo mentioned this often in the broadcast, but there really were a ton of icing calls in this contest. The constant stoppages in play kept the game from having any real back and forth flow to it, which wasn't a problem for the team that led the whole game.
  • While we're on the subject of Foley, his exuberant call of Kane's 2 on 1 goal seemed to be indicative of the frustration that Kane and his fans have felt during one of the tougher scoring slumps of his career. Kane's had a few goal scoring droughts this season, but this one was accompanied by a multiple-point-game drought that seemed to make the situation all that much worse. Foley was genuinely excited to see Kane's goal and 1st two point night since December 5th.
  • I don't know much about Florida D-man Dmitry Kulikov, but he was the most noticeably physical player on the ice tonight. Unless I'm mistaken, I believe it was Kulikov who knocked Hossa down along the boards right before the end of one of the first two periods, which is always an impressive physical display. In taking a look at his CORSI rating, and rewatching his pinch on Kane's goal, it's obvious that a "physical" game doesn't always equate to a good game.
  • The Bruno-Bolland-Hayes line didn't have its best game, but it's still fun to see what that line is capable of when they're able to gain puck possession behind the goal line. All three players generally move well around the net, and you're always on the lookout for a dirty goal when that line is on the ice.
  • If you go back watch Kane's goal, it's tough to understand how Toews doesn't get an assist there. After Kane strips Weiss, Toews taps the puck ahead and Kane appears to beat Kulikov to it. I guess Toews has been getting his fair share of easy goals and points over the last couple weeks, maybe he was due to get jobbed on a point that he'd rightfully earned.
  • The statistics may show that the correlation between PK faceoff wins and penalties killed might not be as air tight as one would think, but PK goals allowed like the one to Garrison certainly make a lost draw look ugly.
  • Razor didn't have to make too many tough saves this evening, but sometimes the best thing that can be said of a backup netminder is that his team doesn't lose any confidence when he gets a start. That's where we're at with Ray Emery right now, and "solid though untested" on a given night is ok in my book.
  • The blueliners continue to spark the powerplay now that the Hawks aren't dependent on forcing backdoor passes. Let's hope this continues even after Sharp returns to the lineup.
  • While the Hawks have had their ups and downs this year, and occasionally miss the respective skill sets of their 09-10 teammates, I think they've placed their buddies in the rearview mirror as they attempt to carve out a new team legacy. Since we're on the subject, the Hawks could place the pesky Preds in the rearview mirror with 4 regulation points in the coming home-and-home set. An 8 point lead on the kids from Music City would look awfully good heading into the All-Star Break.

PLAYER OF THE GAME

Patrick_20cent_kane_medium

With 5 shots, 2 points, and a +6 CORSI rating, Patrick Kane was the best player on the ice tonight, which was a welcome sight for the UC faithful. And seriously, the pass that sprung Toews was just stupid.

Kaner one timed that pass from Stalls to Toews from blue like to blue line

And put it right on Captain Marvel’s tape. An impressive display. That pass had some go juice on it. Miss the captain’s stick and it’s icing. Put it behind him or pass a softie and it’s a TO.

I just watched the game

I thought it was a good game by the Hawks…but man oh man haven’t seen that many icing calls in a game in a while….I still don’t get it, did Tazer get an assist for the PK88 goal? I thought i read somewhere that they credited him with the assist, and now i just checked a boxscore on yahoo, and it only has him down for 1 goal…D2K had another nice game, the offense may not be there this season, but he has been as defensively sound as he was the year he won the norris,i still can’t believe he didn’t get voted to the all star team, but BigBuff made it, just proof what hot garbage the all star voting as become

It was nice to see Kaner deflect Sarah’s question about his goal, (Who ya gonna call, slumpbusters), and show his appreciation for the fans who spent over 3 hours trying to get to the U.C.

Good write up Hack, fair and balanced

I was about to mention during the game that the 3rd line didn’t look very good (mostly just in relation to the relatively weak competition), but then of course as I was typing they had a nice possession below the goal line in the 3rd. Still worry about Bruno and Hayes on that line against a quick team. Maybe swap one of them with Frolik?

Although it is true there is not a strong correlation between FO% and penalty killing overall, there is a strong one in the first 15 seconds or so immediately following a FO. So yeah.

Wonder if this was the first game where we start to see the new kids come back down to earth? I hope not, but it’s what usually happens once the adrenaline wears off.

Also, there aren't enough "fuck yous" in the world for the City and the CTA yesterday

There was no way that we were driving so we went on Metra which was just fine but then we got downtown. There was not a drop of salt anywhere and the CTA apparently decided that buses just weren’t needed and that led to the giant clusterfuck at the Ogilvie station as we watched one empty bus after another drive by. Then after the game, ONE #19 bus then nothing for almost 30 minutes.

Hack's comment on 'solid but untested Emery' inspired a thought that our blue line has locked itself down a bit tighter recently.

Holding San Jose, a team averaging about 34 shots a game, to about 2/3 that on Sunday was the first indicator that the corps is playing a tighter game in their own end. Combine that with the improved play of Bolland, the continued play of Frolik, and the consistency demonstrated in the last 10-15 games by 72 and we may be witnessing the pending improvement of one Crow.

But Old Donald can’t take too many more miles. He was good at the beginning of the year, then a drop off. Time off seems to have recharged his battery, but for how long?

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Old Donald has played in 6 straight because the team is weaker with Sharp out.

Frolik has been a nice addition to that fourth line. I like it.

We have a home and home vs the preds — but they don’t. They have a game at home Monday vs, CBJ before they fly to Chicago. Odd.

It's on, bitches.

That Third Period

Was like watching a Sox game in the middle of July (and the Sox up five runs) with Hawk talking about how Herm, Bossard etc are worth a good four or five wins a year. Pat and Eddie… no need to take a page from the Hawk Harrison Broadcasting Book and talk about how great the training, equipment, clubhouse etc staff is for five minutes.

This sounds snarkier than I want it too… oh well. POST

by Otter7 on Jan 21, 2012 11:47 AM CST reply actions

Interesting stat.

Hawks home games — 28
Hawks away games — 20

Toews home points — 24 = .86 PPG
Toews away points — 26 = 1.3 PPG

My serenity is inversely proportional to my expectations.

I didn't think this was kane's first great game in a while.

I thought he was great against the sharks and pretty decent against the sabres.

by lobster on Jan 21, 2012 12:21 PM CST reply actions

Affirm.

He was impressive against SJ. Simply didn’t dent the net. Not always indicative of a lack of effort or effectiveness as an offensive force. That said, the scorer’s sheet may need a breather now. I believe the boy is about to black magic all over the place.

I am hoping so.

The team game is so good right now but it would still be really nice to see kane go on a tear here.

I'm not one to rely on visceral instincts for hockey analysis...

But allow me a meatball moment: Humpty Hump is about to wave his magic wand all over the league. How quickly we forget the tear with which he began this campaign. Strap yourself in.

by Sparky The Barbarian on Jan 21, 2012 4:04 PM CST up reply actions

Yes it is

That’s why the Hawks leading the league in points right now doesn’t mean anything. In fact if you took home/away point percentages of each team, Detroit would win the division and conference with approximately 113 points at the end of the season while the Hawks project to 107.

I thought Kane showed an extra gear last night

He has been good lately, but last night was elite/dominant. Kinda like Toews has been for most of the year.

I wondered actually if that wasn't a suspendable offense/

$2500 seems light for a player who does that move so often

It would be nice if the next CBA made fines something that would sting a players pocket

Fines in my world are half months pay for up to two months. It does serve as a hell of a deterrent!

After taxes, that total is less than two periods of Hockey. 38 minutes 28 seconds for a 60 minute game.

There are players out there that

are have that $2500 covered after a shift or two. I think the minimum of a game’s pay should be set as a fine.

Plus

30 days restriction, 30 days extra duty. AND reduction 2 pay grades for a field grade.

That's what kinda sucks

Maximum fine is $2500, some plays look like they need more of a fine but aren’t quite suspendable…oh well

Uh, we had a slight weapons malfunction, but uh... everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here now, thank you. How are you?

it is always amazing to see the strength of players in this game, isn't it?

Prust blocked a really hard shot, and he skated off the ice, walked off the bench and got down the little tunnel before basically collapsing because of the pain.
