one of my bosses lives in the same building as Toews. He saw him yesterday when he was getting off the elavator. I asked him if he was wearing a cast, and he said no. He did have a tommy Bahama shirt on and a bag full of sun tan lotion.
So you're saying he was traded to Florida?

i've come up
with a solution to the hawks goaltending:
get cheap goalie
make him the starter
find elite goaltender
pey dat man hes money
make him the backup goaltender
play backup over the starter, but keep telling everyone he is still the backup
destroy other teams
win cup
realize that in chicago, the starter is always worse than the backup.
The articles on goalies and on big contracts kind of point to the same conclusion
…regarding NHL goaltenders today, which would be that outside of a very small number of elites there is parity. Which means that a team which doesn’t happen to have a proven Vezina contender would be wasting resources to try to grab something just below that level, the mythical “proven” NHL starting goalie. See e.g. the Oilers signing Khabibulin, the Hawks signing Huet, the Flyers going for Bryz, etc.
Basically if you don’t have one of the very few top studs the rational thing to do today is avoid big investment in the goalie position — you’ll be able to find a Ray Emery or a new kid who is going to be 95% as effective as the established vet who you could sign. [I know of course that some teams have tried and failed to pull that off, e.g. the Flyers every year lately, but that seems to say more about those teams’ managements than about the actual available pool of goalies today.]
Which if correct means among other things that investing a chunk of cap space in a young goalie who’s had one good-but-not-elite season as a starter (as the Sharks did with Niemi, the Hawks did with Crawford, etc) is not sensible. Not because those goalies “suck” but rather because there are so many now who are decent: they are not particularly more effective overall than would be the replacement-level goalie who could have been acquired much cheaper.

Grammar fail
In the final sentence the “they” refers to the young one-season starters signed to bigger deals such as Niemi and Crawford.

Good observations...
I always thought Bryzgalov was upper echelon – glad we don’t have that contract at the moment.
Chris Block’s piece gave a glimmer of hope in a kid called Carter Hutton, (who), he went 4-0 last week for the Hogs and only gave up a total of 5 goals in those games – two of which were against the Wolves.
my thought – there’s still a lot of hockey to be played this season. Ride the waves with Crow – if you don’t he’ll be second guessing every shot he faces. Each goal will be like that pendulum coming closer and closer to the belly – until the blood starts squirting and we have a real mess on our hands.
For you golatenders out there – is crow coming further out of the net than he did last year?
Carter Hutton is NOT property of the Blackhawks.
He is just some AHL level guy the Icehogs (not the Blackhawks) signed. Who is better than Richards with Salak on IR. Pretty much tells you all you need to know about Richards.
If he is Rockford property (not on loan from elsewhere) - the Hawks could sign him
If Bowman hasn’t thoroughly humped the maximum contract limit (like last year, if I recall correctly)
Fighting stupidity since 1958 (its a much bigger project than originally envisioned).
Confusion will be my epitaph.

i've said this before
but personally, i have not seen a major change in crow’s style from last year. i would put the biggest difference in between his ears right now. its not a glamorous response, but it makes the most sense to me.
goaltending is such a situational position, the shot you stopped in one game could go in the next. as i continue to watch hockey, ive noticed the body of work of several goaltenders whos style has not drastically changed put up vastly different numbers from year to year. look at miller, halak, roloson, bryz, etc. there is an intangible quality to the position that can give a team great confidence, or utter shakiness (see huet, cristobal), and of course, so much depends on the team playing in front of a tender. we can all see who is doing well or bad during a certain year, but playing well consistently year in year out takes a special goaltender.
i had to look it up again...
but did you realize Tim thomas has only played in the NHL for 6 seasons.
always appreciate your goaltending acumen. I don’t know why, it just seems to me he’s straying from the net a lot further that, especially, when he first came up.
saw hutton play last night...
he was good, but he is 27. The IceHogs also played surprisingly tight defense.
False dichotomies can be fun.
Especially when it’s a Hawks net discussion.

It’s wrong. During the regular season they might have been ranked low, but go ask your Packers if they think the NY Giants defense is bad. See how Alex Smith feels today after getting sacked 6 times. Go ask Tim Tebow and Joe Flacco why they couldn’t move the ball against the 32nd worst defense.

Defence wins championships, NHL version
If we look at where the Cup finalists each season finished leaguewide for the regular season in goals allowed per game [I know not a perfect stat for judging team defense but it’s the best single one readily available], here are the results since the lockout:
2011: Bos 2nd, Van 1st
2010: Chi 6th, Phi 15th
2009: Pit 9th, Det 3rd
2008: Det 1st, Pit 5th
2007: Ana 7th, Ott 10th
2006: Car 20th, Edm 12th
The Hawks right now are 17th in the league in GA/game.
by Paul the Fossil on Jan 23, 2012 12:20 PM CST reply actions
Seems the biggest complaints this season are about the defense
and rightly so, in general, by looking at the goals allowed. But I wonder if the bigger problem is lack of possession? Or if it’s at least as much on the forwards as the defense and goalies? Or maybe it’s the system/coaching?
2010 Defense
Keith-Seabrook
Soupy-Hjammer
Sopel-Hendry
(Boynton, Barker, Johnsson)
2012 Defense
Keith-Seabrook
Leddy-Hjammer
Monty-OD
(Lepisto, Scott, Olsen)
Sopel was on most people’s shit list until late in the season. Hendry was nothing special and probably a healthy scratch on most teams. Hjammer was in his first full season and got some protection with easier zone starts. The forward corps rocked.
This year, Leddy is a downgrade from Campbell, but I’d take Monty and OD over Sopel-Hendry every day of the week. Add to that, that another defenseman will likely be picked up before the trade deadline. To me that’s a pretty damn good defense with potential to be even better.
IMO the problem is Q’s lack of trust in his 3rd pairing. Because of that he’s misemploying the top 4. Leddy and Hjammer have been getting the toughest zone assignments in an effort to free up 7-2 to produce more offense. If 4-8 is your shutdown pairing, your defensive numbers are going to suffer.
Basically, Q has decided that the best way for this team to win is to outscore the opposition in a scene from the O.K. Corral, instead of trying to limit the oppositions’ scoring. He’s probably correct with this approach. The Hawks don’t have big physical defenders, and because of “preferred sides” his pairing options are extremely limited. Since the Hawks are near the top of league in points, despite our concerns, apparently it’s working. For now. And Q being Q, he’s going to ride that ideology until it stops working in the W column.
If the Hawks pick up the right defensive player before the deadline, that should also correct A LOT of the problems with the defense. 7-2 would be able to go back to a more balanced role. Leddy should get freed up to contribute on the offensive side where he was successful earlier in the season. And Q should be able to use Hjammer-Monty as a solid all-purpose pairing that can also eat up a lot of minutes.
The big question is, “Is that player (still) out there?”

perhaps you are right
but then what good are assistant coaches who don’t control much
by putmeinthemadhouse on Jan 23, 2012 3:46 PM CST up reply actions
Yeah, that's total BS
The head coach picks who goes out. The assistants (forward and D) are basically book keepers who relay total minutes (and situational minutes) back to the head coach in-period. Typically the assistants will also note who their controlled players match up against. For example, Kitchen will note who most of his pairings match-up against (opposition forwards) and vice-versa for Havi. Their numbers and match-ups will be approximate but should be accurate enough such that when Q asks them for “live” details they can update him and then he can make his adjustments and match-up calls. This way the assistants are “good guys” or “buddies” with the players, tracking minutes, giving little pointers but not making the hard decisions about who gets sat and where situational minutes are divided. The head coaches job is to be the bad guy. Calling which line is next is the bad guys role. That’s why most honest head coaches will always take the fall for a too-many men because it’s their call (even if the guy jumping the boards misheard etc.).
This is all pretty standard coaching protocol at higher/elite levels. Individual coaches and teams might do things slightly different – but it wouldn’t be by much (e.g. maybe one of the assistants is a real numbers guy and tracks just about everyone). Assistants may tell guys who’s up next with the explicit understanding that if the head coach says different everybody will give him 3 bags full.
You are next.

Hey, about the Kostitsyn goal in particular, I’d like some input from you scholars of the art of goaltending.
On Hossa’s breakaway goal, I thought of course he’ll score because he’s Marian Hossa. On Kostitsyn’s goal, it looked to me like Kostitsyn made a good move, but a part of me also said ehhhhh Crawford looked rather clumsy. I think I’ve seen it commented on this site that one of Crow’s defects is that he does not have a poke check in his toolbox. And offhand, I can’t remember seeing it from him. Was this a play where it would have served him well?
And speaking of the poke check, I wonder if JC Petit is available. I haven’t looked at the numbers to see if he would fit under the salary cap. But he would certainly fit on the team bus.
Hey! I take penumbrage at that!
on the kostitsyn goal
crow had shifted to the center of the crease and was not far enough out to create any backwards momentum to match kostitsyn’s stride. this left him frozen against kostitsyn’s speed. put that together with the shooter coming directly down the slot, that shot fake killed crow. tough not to bite on a fake where the guy had the puck with time from a deadly position (think how many shootout attempts toews burns goalies like that), but what killed crow was his positioning once kostitsyn received the puck. i would say, kostitsyn kept good distance on his fake and crow wouldn’t have had a chance for a poke check, so i wouldn’t put the blame on that.
From CSN about Toews
Jonathan Toews will be out when the Chicago Blackhawks host the Nashville Predators on Tuesday night, and his appearance at the All-Star Game this weekend is unlikely.
Coach Joel Quenneville said Toews is officially listed as day to day with an upper-body injury he sustained on Saturday against the Predators. Quenneville said they’ll have to wait and see if Toews will join the team for the Western Canada part of their trip after the break.
At least we know enough in advance that the team can practice and figure out what works without him? I’m keeping my thoughts positive for Tuesday.

And if so, to be consistent, I would hope you’d have been expressing equal ire at someone who declined to meet the immediate prior President over some postion/actiopn of the former President.

I’m not a fan of the president, however, this is good publicity for the NHL and the sport in the USA. it will be interesting to see what thomas has to say, I hope it’s more than I’m a Republican.
I'm embarrassed for his team.
Speaking apolitically, I just spent a second tour in the Hindu-Kush. All I wanted to do when I came home was to get to the UC for the National Anthem at a ‘Hawks game. I don’t come home to demand special treatment, be feted, or otherwise be treated with any deference.
Tim Thomas, regardless of the reason, is a grown man. The fact that he doesn’t have the ability to hold his tongue long enough to smile and thank the president for a gracious invitation to congratulate a fantastic performance and a Cup win is an embarrassment. A grown man should be able to hold his tongue long enough to say, ‘Thank you, Mr. President. It’s an honor to be here.’ Foreign-born players are in attendance and they’re managing to hold their political opinions in reserve in order to present a responsible, mature appearance for kids that may be watching.

What grown man declares his reasoning on Facebook? I think back to my grandmother and grandfather, the things they did, how they toughed out rough times, how they responded to stress, and I’m embarrassed at how everyone today is bent on declaring personal opinions. It's an 'I, I, I, me, me, me' society.
Facebook, Twitter… public diaries. Why does anyone care what flavor ice cream you feel like? Why does one feel inspired to post every personal thought in a forum for others to observe and analyze?
This goes with the Thomas discussion. Does Thomas make all of his life decisions through his political lens? Are people like Thomas capable of making basic day-to-day decisions without the infiltration of political motivation? Why suck all the enjoyment out of living in the moment by over-analyzing anything and everything you do so it can be interpreted as being consistent with a specific political philosophy? We’re becoming a society of self-absorbed malcontents who feel entitled to a statement on everything.
Thomas is simply the latest in a long line of self-obsessed snobs who can’t place themselves below an office that should be afforded some respect. It’s not like he’s being asked to donate money to a cause he doesn’t believe in. Grow up, Tim.

Tim Thomas, regardless of the reason, is a grown man.
\
This is correct. Thus, as a grown man and a citizen, he has the right to express himself in any way he chooses.
The fact that he doesn’t have the ability to hold his tongue long enough to smile and thank the president for a gracious invitation to congratulate a fantastic performance and a Cup win is an embarrassment.
Actually, it’s an enactment of the rights guaranteed by the Constitution. If he wants to make a statement, political or not, he’s allowed to.
A grown man should be able to hold his tongue long enough to say, ‘Thank you, Mr. President. It’s an honor to be here.’
You continue to reference “a grown man” … Would it make a difference if he was a child? What if he didn’t feel that it was an honor to be there? Isn’t it more disingenuous to lie?
Foreign-born players are in attendance and they’re managing to hold their political opinions in reserve in order to present a responsible, mature appearance for kids that may be watching.
My guess is that they are there because of the free buffet and the open bar, but hey, what do I know. Their nationalities have little to do with their choice to attend.

The Bruins let him make the decision, and this is what he chose. If it had been a mandated team event, I would say otherwise, but the Bruins let him make this choice.
I think he understands what this would do to his reputation either good or bad, and to take a personnel stance in spite of the most likely backlash he will and is receiving, I find somewhat commendable, that he places somethings at a higher value then sports or even his own spotlight to make a self described political statement.
He is NOT the first athlete to do this, nor will he be the last. I for one respect people more when they put their principles first and self-gain or self-interests second.

Whoopsie
Hit enter too early.
Anyway, what I mean is, I could be taking the other side of the “argument” from someone I actually agree with policy-wise. That’s really really cool to me, and I think it’s healthy discussion (as long as policy stays the hell out of it.)

At this point
It is only a matter of short time before policy does enter into it. I think everyone knows where the other stands, next up will be more the why or should, then the can he. At that point, it is all downhill like the Wild!

It was a great game yesterday, the only Flyers game this year more entertaining than the game with the Hawks. Completely different character – nasty, brutish. Bryzgalov took that swing at Marchand, Schenn leveled somebody and got into a fight a few seconds later, Sestito went after Lucic and targeted Chara with hits. We dressed eight rookies and were missing Briere, JvR, Jagr and of course Pronger so we had room for a couple of our goons. If ever a game should have ended in a tie…..

by JesusMarianHossa on Jan 23, 2012 6:09 PM CST up reply actions
doesn't Ovie have more of a history of moves like this then his record indicates?
And no disagree with you completely. He left his feet. The fact that Michalek was lucky enough to not get injured on the play should not absolve Ovie of what he did.

by Toews-makes-funny-faces on Jan 23, 2012 6:14 PM CST up reply actions
Had an up close and personal view at that one
Was a section over and 6 rows up for it. In person, it looked horrendous. After seeing the replays, it’s one of those hits I define as reckless. Don’t think he intended to hurt Campbell but he definitely could have gone about that differently. It was a stupid play on his part.
by JesusMarianHossa on Jan 23, 2012 6:20 PM CST up reply actions
He LEFT HIS FEET to make that hit
and Michalek’s head got driven into the glass. He is damn lucky that he isn’t concussed (as far as we know). And sorry, I’m not yelling in the title, I just wanted to emphasize but I don’t think we can italicize in the subject?
"Orange Mocha Frappuccino!"
by justforkicks on Jan 23, 2012 6:16 PM CST up reply actions
He had no reason to leave his feet
If he goes in on his feet, it’s a solid body check. Leaving his feet resulted in direct impact to the head. Michalek was real lucky not to get a trip to the quiet room.

Well they called it a charging where recklessly connects with his head from launching from his feet. They noted he’s been suspended and fined 4 times for stuff like this, but Michalek remained in the game with no apparent injury, and so they decided to go with 3.

Yeah agree completely.
I feel like they should make the call based on the hit. And if someone was injured tack more time on if necessary. But lack of injury should not be used to call a punishment down.

by JesusMarianHossa on Jan 23, 2012 6:26 PM CST up reply actions
I don't think anyone is a proponent of punishing a player the length of time of the player he injured
what we’re saying is: a player NOT being injured shouldn’t lessen the suspension of a player who did something really dirty. I’m adding, if a player does something dirty (and especially if they have a record of it) I wouldn’t mind a game or two added to their sentence.

So somebody analyzed ESPN's coverage of things from Jan 7th - 18th
Total time: 759.5 minutes
Time (minus commercials): 560 minutes
TIME DEVOTED TO INDIVIDUAL SPORTS
NFL: 225.5 minutes (40.2%)
NBA: 106.5 (19%)
College basketball: 76 (13.6%)
College football: 55 (9.8%)
MLB: 16.75 (2.9%)
NHL: 13.5 (2.4%)
Other sports: 18 (3.2%)
SportsCenter staples (things like the “Top 10,” “Encore,” “What 2 Watch 4,” etc.): 48.75 (8.7%)
That’s right, a sport not currently in season got more coverage than the NHL. Quality reporting right there. Source.
