And Meanwhile, Heaven's Falling - Preds 3, Hawks 1

Ok, deeeeeeeeeeeeep breaths. Deep breaths people. Yes, the Hawks are now in 4th place in the division, and 6th in the conference. But they still have 64 points in 50 games. They're still 8 points better than they were through 50 games last year, and the Riders of Rohan have seen the beacons, as Toews and Sharp should be back soon after the All Star break, which also speaks nothing of the cap room that Stan Bowman has available to hide the multitude of problems that have plagued this team from Day 1.

In all honesty, I actually thought the Hawks looked fairly solid this evening, all things considered. However, the already slim margin for error gets even slimmer with two 20 goal scorers out of the lineup, and the Preds do what they always do, which is kick your dick in when you make a mistake. There was a diet version of a 3rd period rally, but a too many men penalty late squelched any hopes of a furious onslaught in the dying seconds. Preds 3, Hawks 1. On to the farewell bullets.

Observations

  • It was nice to see that extra stitching on Marian Hossa's sweater didn't weigh him down much. Whenever he was on the ice he mattered because he had to.
  • The Preds' second goal was a textbook example of everything wrong with the second pairing. Leddy got outworked and outmuscled in the corner, which allowed Patric Hornqvist to kick the puck to the slot, where Mr. Carrie Underwood was allowed once again by Niklas Hjalmarsson to shoot unimpeded at Corey Crawford. Something's got to give here, and I don't think it's going to be Leddy's ass on the line.
  • Hey Crow, rather than throwing a tantrum after a goal, how about you worry about controlling those rebounds or keeping pucks actually in you catch glove. Ask the guy who shot the puck during the second break about glove work if you need to.
  • The Corsi numbers show the Hawks being all over the Preds, which backs up the eye test. Granted Pekka Rinne is the hottest goalie in the league backing up/propelling the hottest team in the league, but the Hawks didn't make things entirely that difficult for Rinne, who rarely had to make a second save or stop anything with his blocker or glove, which is were those Toews and Sharp guys just might have come in handy. But watch all of the beat writers tell everyone that the Hawks were flat and lacked a spark or some other under-informed thoughtless bullshit.
  • Keith and Seabrook each played over 27 minutes tonight. Why wouldn't they, they're getting a week off, right?
  • Naturally, Pat Foley unleashes his inner meatball on air and spat up a stat saying that Viktor Stalberg has only 2 hits in his last 6 or 7 or whatever games. He did mention that he had 7 points in that span, but he reiterated that Vik needed to pick it up and HIT SOMEBODY, effectively calling Stalberg a panty waist.
  • Boy, that Montador/Yip bout sure sparked the Hawks, didn't it?
  • The PK was actually pretty solid tonight against the league's second best unit, and gave the Hawks a chance to stay in the game. I'm going to go ahead and give them a pass for empty netter that will count as a power play goal in the end.
  • Even with Toews out, the Hawks dong whipped the Preds at the dot, winning 38 and losing 22.
  • Any time you're ready, Kaner.
  • Michael Frolik was scratched. Did anyone really notice?
  • Five rookie forwards dressed and a back-breaking too-many-men penalty at the end? I'm shocked.
  • So it's not ideal, but nothing is fucked. Far from it. This off time needs to be taken to rest, get healthy and tighten things up defensively. Of the remaining 32 games, 10 are against the 3 teams ahead of the Hawks in the division. There will be plenty of opportunity to take some initiative within the division and the conference.

Agree totally with the last bullet

4 point swing to a division opponent heading into the break does suck but we’ve got 6 days to get healthy and come out to grab a win in Vancouver. Nothing is fucked. The rug got peed on a little but Johnny and Sharp have the ringer.

As for Kaner and Frolik… Kane needs a center, that’s all. I did notice Frolik’s absence because our back checking was subpar from most of the forwards and we still only scored one goal. All Frolik does is play defense and never score.

by JesusMarianHossa on Jan 24, 2012 11:27 PM CST via mobile reply actions

Kane needs a center?

So Toews isn’t cutting it out for him?

Kane doesn’t need anything other than to pick up his own game. He has all the pieces around him. Let’s not pretend something else is causing his enormous slump.

by Ban on Jan 24, 2012 11:59 PM CST up reply actions

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that JMH

Was talking specifically about tonight, given the comment about Frolik. And so no, toews wasn’t enough of a center for him – it was like he wasn’t even on the ice.

Kane hasn't played particularly well with Toews as his center as of late.

Something needs to change with him, whether it’s how he’s coached in private, or how his production (or lack thereof) is responded to with on-ice minutes.

There's only one thing that needs to change

Points on the scoresheet. Otherwise, he’s going through what Marian Hossa did in the playoffs of 2010*. Putting himself in the right spots, playing well but simply not finding the back of the net. Did you guys not see his fantastic pass to Shaw that was a perfect setup for a goal? Shaw simply misfired. These things happen.

I think Fifth Feather said it a week ago. I wish he’d score so people would stop acting like he’s not contributing out there.

  • - I realize he doesn’t play defense like that so he doesn’t contribute quite as much on both sides of the ice

by JesusMarianHossa on Jan 25, 2012 8:30 AM CST up reply actions

a few things then hopefully i'm done

not scoring goals =/= not playing well. that’s pretty shortsighted, imo. Now I’m not saying he’s doing great – he’s obviously in a slump with 4 points in the last 9 games, but he’s not doing as bad as some make it seem – he’s just not doing as well as we (or he) would like. If you’re waiting for him to be a huge goal scorer, maybe that is a pipe dream at this point or for the near future. He’s stated (and showed the reporters when talking about Sharp) that he’s lost range of motion in the wrist he had surgery on, and I imagine having mobility there is pretty important for a goal scorer. Speaking from experience (though to a more severe degree), its not easy or quick learning how to compensate for it and do everything as well as before. So maybe he’s becoming primarily a playmaker – if he sets up great plays and the other players don’t deliver, is that still 100% all on Kane? As for production, I don’t see how benching him is going to get the puck in the net faster.

by ccm on Jan 25, 2012 7:07 AM CST up reply actions

I think Kane's defensive play has been sub-par, even by his modest standards, during this goal scoring slump.

It seems to be lingering in the vicinity of ’I’m mildly interested’ and ‘I really don’t give a fuck’. If anything, he needs to pick up his defensive play, to the extent he can, until this goal scoring thing works itself out. But he seems to be moping/depressed/suffering a crisis of confidence about his offensive problems and he’s letting it bring down his already modest defensive game. IMO that turns Kane into a one trick pony that other teams can more easily defend and nullify.
I’m sure that this will all sort itself out eventually (maybe the freewheeling and relaxed nature of the All-Star game will be just what he needs to relax) and he’ll return to form. It just would be nice if were sooner rather than later.

If the hawks trade for a dman

i think Hammer should be a healthy scratch for just a game or two. how many times does he just sit there and watch people shoot pucks into our net without hitting/blocking/lifting sticks/deflecting with his stick? its getting a bit stupid and i think the coaches need to send a message to him.

Indian, I don't think ANY Preds fan would be stupid enough to think the Hawks won't make the PO's

5 of the 9 next road games on the Hawks upcoming long road trip, so Disney on Ice or whatever the hell it is can have the United Center, are against the bottom feeders of the NHL. LA is playing better now and will pick it up the 7th spot or better, so a few suck ass teams, namely MN, PHX, and CO will battle for the 8th spot. I think the Blues will fade some too but still make the PO’s. The Hawks are a lock for 7th to 4th depending on how all your rookies gel and if Crawford can play more consistant. EVERYBODY will be terrified to see Toews and Sharp come back and Hossa makes me cringe whenever he gets near the puck. The Hawks scoring alone is good for at the VERY least the 7th spot. BTW, that’s a great newletter you write for pre-game opponents. A real fun read with lots of potty mouth!

Well...

maybe if you’ve been hitting the corn liquor jar with Cousin Stanley.

There is so much parity now a days. So much comes down to the bounce of the puck or a refs call. Last night’s game was a lot more entertaining than most Pred affairs. Your team really seems to be a lot more “offensive” this year. Glad I don’t have to see Joel Ward out there anymore against us.

For some unknown reason, it seems the Preds are the kings of the odd man rush.

Good observation on Crawford – that’s one area you have a big advantage at the moment.

By the way, Phoenix and Colorado are a bit better than suck-ass.

by wardrums on Jan 25, 2012 9:02 AM CST up reply actions

Maybe, but they'll really struggle to beat teams ahead of them

No depth and the top 7 are wayyyyyyy better than they are. BTW, Our PP% cannot last all season. If it does, it’ll surprise the hell out of me. Last season we would’ve rather declined the penatly if we could have because we sucked so bad at it. I can’t imagine any team can have such an amazing turn around for an entire season.

by TSCinSFO on Jan 25, 2012 9:16 AM CST up reply actions

Watching the ICBM at the point get the puck and tee it up is more frightening than Iran getting a nuke.

The hawks have strugglled with both Phoe and Col, so maybe my perception is askew.

You know who I like on the Preds and was really strong in the playoffs last year – that Spaling guy. TooTooo seems to be more effective the last two years also.

by wardrums on Jan 25, 2012 9:27 AM CST up reply actions

i saw nothing last night that would lead me to beleive the Preds are a better team than the hawks...

The Preds are a very good team. If I had to describe them in a few words it would be “Defensively responsible.” Although your offensive attack seems to be better than last year, you don’t have near the guns in your arsenal we do.

there will be ebbs and flows throughout the remainder of the season, but your statement “praying for the spoiler to knock out the 8th seed,” is a little overboard.

Finally, next to the coyotes, the Preds are the most aggravating team in the league to play against. despite knowing you suck- we always seem to struggle with them. I guess that falls under the heading, “Playing to the level of your competition.”

by wardrums on Jan 25, 2012 8:32 AM CST up reply actions

The Preds don't suck though:

5th in wins/points.
9th in Goals For.
11th in Goals Allowed.
2nd in PP%
4th in PP goals
12% in PK%

In an insanely competitive division

It’s not out of the realm of possibility that Chicago is just genuinely the fourth best team. It’s incredibly difficult to find consistent success across an 82 game season without something resembling a defensive system, and Chicago either doesn’t have one, or the player’s aren’t buying into the one they have.

With three teams ahead of them that DO know how to keep goals out of their net, and two of the three knowing how to put a decent amount in the other guy’s net, it’s possible that Chicago may be looking up all the way to the playoffs.

Once they get there? Who knows. Crazier things have happened.

Good Wrap

a couple of thoughts

It’s easy to blame Leddy for the pass that went to Carrie Underwood, but I thought he did a decent job tying up his man. O’D was asleep at the wheel on that play. It did produce some positive in my opinion though. I liked Cory’s reaction. He seemed to play pissed off the rest of the game – seemed to play a notch up on the determination scale. More of this, please.

Good pick up on Foley taking yet another pot shot at Stals – seems like whenever he gets the chance he likes to criticize #25. Stals actually absorbed a big hit by Weber at one time and emerged with the puck. he had some decent chances – I think it was foley who criticized stalberg for not keeping an eye on Rinne when he poke checked the puck away. Stals is skating as fast as he can, (which is pretty damn fast), has a d-man on his tail and he’s trying to control the puck. Rinne made calculated risk and great play. Why can’t the announcer leave it alone and give credit where credit is due.

I missed Frolic – a better option than Smith or Bickell.

O’D seems to need a rest.

The Preds are a damn good hockey team. It seems like they give you the perimeter in their zone and always have a man on the puck. Hard to find room to shoot.

As we come spinning out of the turn, it seems like the playoff intensity hockey is about to commence. Warning, the lasr 32 games will not be for the feint of heart.

by wardrums on Jan 25, 2012 8:14 AM CST reply actions

excellent

poke check by rinne. thats a great play to use it on, if my memory serves me right, the defender has cut off the outside for the shooter, forcing him across the middle on his forehand. with the speed of stalberg and the small time/space he had on the play, if he can’t get a shovel shot off, he will have a tough time against a good poke check like that. good to see a goalie have an active stick, even if i would’ve liked stals to have scored on the play.

conversely, i would’ve liked to have seen corey anticipate a bit more on that kick pass goal. it was too far for his stick to break it up, but the pass itself was slow enough for him to have picked up way more depth on the shooter. that big glove save was slick, tho. at that point in the game, it kept the hawks in it. good to see he can step up on big saves…sometimes…

by Raditzzzz on Jan 25, 2012 8:54 AM CST up reply actions

crow was solid last night...

Did you notice his focus as the “glove save” play developed? He was zeroed in on it from before the pass. That was an intense save.

He still overcommits like a madman

He overcommits to one side and takes ages to get back to the other post. He did it so well last night that he was pretty much sitting right next to the net and if not for the D, the Preds would’ve had an easy wrap-around.

I’ve seen him do this less as of late but it’s still somewhat alarming how often he does it. I’m hoping Waite addresses this issue in practice.

I think that is a valid point. tough on a goalie because they have to make sure the first option is sealed off before sliding over. Would like to see both our net minders move quicker post to post.

disagree

Craw had one amazing save and a very luke warm game filled with messy stick work and juicy rebounds.

by aeroplane on Jan 25, 2012 8:33 PM CST up reply actions

I'd put the vast majority of the blame for that goal on Leddy, not OD

OD leaves the front of the net to accept the pass from Leddy. The pass is intercepted and bang bang it’s in the net. OD never had a chance to get back into the play since the goal was scored from Leddy’s side of the net.

Some secondary blame might be placed on Hayes, since he didn’t come back to defend, but the forwards were caught in transition mode there. Pirri releases to the low half boards to receive the pass from Leddy, but Leddy does release that Pirri’s man has already bailed and the pass to Pirri is open. Leddy goes the wrong way with that pass. Possibly Hayes shouldn’t have released yet, but that’s debatable. Against a team like the Preds with a strong forecheck, you need to hold your ground for an extra beat, especially with the slot vacated by OD. /shrugs

And that goal definitely isn’t on Crow. I thought the first goal was on him though. That one was pretty soft. Crow doesn’t seem to be handling even minimal screens very well this season.

In my dreams, Crow goes to Lense Crafters during the ASB and shows up at the next game looking like Spaz. He goes on to post a .936 Sv% for the remainder of the season, .942 in the post season and 16 wins.

Does that work for everyone?

Do me a favor

keep Toews and Sharp out until Feb 1st. Thanks.

I think the ledge should still be kept a safe distance away. You’re only 3 points out of first and 9 points ahead of 8th. The three teams ahead of you in the division have hot goalies. Maybe that’s why Crawford’s slump is so glaring…yeah, I said slump. But even if the crazy idea of trading him came up there is really goalie on a non-playoff team I would take over Crawford.

Having said all this, if you to the Nucks on Jan 31……PANIC!

disclaimer'd by not seeing the game last night

but on the highlights, craw let in two really prime scoring chances.

All of last season he would commonly let in 2 a night. Rarely more, but not often less.

It is probably assisted by not seeing the game, nor participating in the GDT full of drunks.

by oregon_hawk on Jan 25, 2012 8:38 AM CST up reply actions

Who do you trade for then?

The pickings are slim and I think when Toews and Sharp get back that the Hawks can just outscore most teams which allows Crow to let in a bad goal a game. Boy do I know that “one soft goal a game” phenomenon.

Anyone else prefer Montador keep his mitts on at all times?

I appreciate the attempt to get a spark going, but let Jammer or someone else do that. Our defense is already hit or miss on nights and losing one of the only point shots we’ve got back there for five minutes seems pretty shortsighted.

by JesusMarianHossa on Jan 25, 2012 8:41 AM CST reply actions

100% agree.

He’s not a very good fighter, it didn’t spark anything, and it just made it more difficult for 2 and 7 in terms of TOI.

by Katherine215 on Jan 25, 2012 9:17 AM CST up reply actions

If anyone was gonna drop the gloves

it probably needed to be a 4th liner since they weren’t getting any ice time once the Hawks were down by 2, as is Q’s way. No reason to burden the defense.

If there’s a fight and the Hawks score a goal right after that, everyone’s talking about how it energized the team. Because they didn’t score, now it was a stupid decision. At least Monty tried something since nothing else was working for almost 2 games.

And it was obviously an agreed to fight that was gonna happen whenever the opportunity arose. The puck was still in the Hawks zone, so I have no issue with the timing of it.

Possible, not guaranteed

Watch it on hockeyfights.com, the 2nd defender “recovers” because he is still skating hard not knowing the fight has started while Pirri and Shaw have stopped. Just saying it wasn’t the best time to fight.

by WhySoSeriousCaptain on Jan 25, 2012 10:53 AM CST up reply actions

I did watch it there

Shaw and Pirri had to slow down to wait for the puck to enter the zone since Mayers was tied up. They don’t notice the fight until well after the defense recovers. /shrugs

that's annoying to hear about Foley

for the last time Stals is not here to go around pinballing people, his job is to bring the puck faster than hell up the ice and then make plays in front of the net. Annnnnnd so far this season he’s been doing that superbly. Next time you want to complain about lack of a physical presence ask your partner Eddie NoCheck about that issue.

Hossa calling out certain teammates?

I thought Hossa made some very interesting comments in the post game interview he did for WGN radio after last night’s game. What really caught my attention was his response to a question by Troy Murray about how the Hawks can counter the Preds style of play that gives them so much trouble. Hossa specifically mentions their neutral zone play and says essentially (I’m paraphrasing here) that they’re being coached to do certain things to defeat the Preds trap (awaits OTF’s fevered denials) but are not doing it on the ice resulting in the Preds being able to control the play rather than the Hawks.

(Watch and listen to it here: AT&T Game Day: Hossa – The pertinent comments come at the 1:09 mark.)

Maybe I’m projecting and making something out of nothing, but the way he states it seemed to imply that some players are not following the game plan. If true, it was a very subtly stated call out. And even if it was not intended as such, it points out a possible disconnect between some players on the roster and the coaching staff.

It only takes a couple bad apples to throw a monkey wrench into the works (wow, talk about mixed metaphors!) and if this situation exists could point to why the Hawks have experienced some of the recurring systemic problems in their game, especially defensively, this season.

Cause it doesn’t look like that to me. Your boy called out OtFers and I responded. There’s soooo many other things I could have said, but didn’t. Let it go dude. Hawks are a really good team that lost twice to us fair and square. That’s all that needs to be said, not that you would have won if you’d have stuck to the gameplan. I never said we’re better than the Hawks, just that you lost cause we were the better team on each of those nights. Period. End of story.

And I apologize about calling Hawk fans trolls. While the fans that showed up to the game were generally obnoxious, it does show that y’all have a passionate fanbase that loves their team. Kuddos to you for that.

Who the hell called out any OtFers?

Apparently, you are too new to the boards to recall the friendly back-and-forth between SCH and OtF during the playoffs (and prior to) in which SCH defined the Preds style of defense as a trap and some OtFers vehemently denied it. It became a running joke between the two boards. Obviously, you don’t get it.

And yeah, proclaiming your them would have won regardless is gloating. Look it up.

by IndianHeadCrest on Jan 26, 2012 5:50 PM CST up reply actions

If I was gloating, I would have said that we are better than you.....

…..and that you guys suck and that you’re overrated, etc. I would have said that I laughed at your own guy who used shot comparisons from each game as evidence that y’all played a good game, whereas we had you beat during the 2nd period in the first game and had a 2-0 lead in the second game in the first period which is why the shot total was similar. I would have said that your goalie sucks and your defense sucks too and that’s the reason why we had so many oddman rushes in both games. I would have said that we killed you in the first game despite Rinne not having his A game and the fact that Ryan Suter did not play either.

But I didn’t say any of those things. I just said we would have beaten you those nights regardless.

I know the Hawks are a good team and I know that y’all are just hitting a rough patch right now. That’s why I was NOT gloating.
