interesting about the Juniors possible ban

wonder if that happens if the pros will eventually follow – still wish they’d consider the Euro rink size argument, that would appear to settle a lot of the current debates about concussions and penalties.

by Waylon on Jan 27, 2012 9:29 AM CST reply actions

I'd like to see the NHL on bigger ice.

but it would probably take an entire generation of new stadiums to make that happen. A lot of the old barns can’t fit the bigger surface even if they were willing to sacrifice seats.

What this always comes around to, for me, is that 99% of the problems with hockey disappear in Olympic hockey. Why? Is it just that familiarity breeds contempt? Maybe it’s simply that only superstars play in the olympics? But then why don’t Latvia and Belarus goon it up?

Now olympic hockey is usually played on big ice, but it wasn’t (entirely?) at the 2010 games and it still played amazingly cleanly.

People i talk to who are not hockey fans

i.e., my brother, who only watch during the playoffs…

Their principle problem is “early season hockey”. Essentially, they don’t like seeing hockey that isn’t that exciting – the hockey is important to the committed fan, as it impacts the playoff race, but in terms of interesting and exciting in the next 10 minutes of watching the 2nd period of game 5 of the season… not so much.

"Exciting"

I guess you never can tell. I took my aunt to a Milwaukee Admirals game last month, it was her first hockey game at any level ever. Both her and my uncle (he’s not a huge sports fan) were both thrilled by the game – they both said that the game just moves so fast.

My mom almost never watches sports, but can hardly stand to watch hockey, even on TV, because close games are so nerve-wracking. She’s visiting next week and is going to be forced to watch the VAN game, and I can already see her getting crazy about it.

Different strokes and all that, but hockey became exponentially more exciting to me when I actually started watching hockey. That’s true of either in-person hockey or on-TV hockey. I strongly suspect that people who don’t like “early season hockey” just don’t watch much of it. Not all the games are great of course, and you definitely feel the ups and downs of a long season when pay close attention. But to me, the game-to-game excitement in hockey is higher than any sport other than the NFL, which of course has such a short season and small playoffs that every game has a disproportionate impact.

by Brian C on Jan 27, 2012 1:37 PM CST up reply actions

that's a very good point

and one I’m in agreement with. For me, as someone still learning the ropes, i find the regular season fascinating and get worked up for every game.
maybe it’s coming from a soccer background (no playoffs at all: it’s all about the regular season) that I consider every game important, even over such a long haul. hence happy to sit up till stupid o’clock to watch a game agains, say, the Isles.. which is as unimportant as can be in the grand scheme of things but its still a Hockey game and I still want the Hawks to WIN, dammit!

Part of the cleanness in international hockey is due to the tournament format, I think, where the impact of a penalty is magnified exponentially (as compared to an 82 game season). Added to that, as you suggest, is the calibre of player; a Raffi Torres or Matt Cooke just isn’t going to be on a team in international tournaments.

And why would Latvia and Belarus goon it up? It wouldn’t get them any closer to winning, and the IIHF would likely banish them to the lower tier.

ASG - Put me down in the keep it column

Maybe I’m in the minority but I enjoy the draft, the skills, and even the game. Yes, the game is more like a scrimmage, but it’s still fun seeing all those guys on the ice at the same time. Ovechkin and Crosby weren’t there? Huh, I didn’t notice…

Thank you, sir! May I have another?

by Badgerdano on Jan 27, 2012 9:38 AM CST reply actions

I agree

I enjoy the skill competition the most, especially the goalie race, that always makes for good fun. When team Chara drafted Hossa, my first thought was Hossa and Datsyuk on the same team (hopefully the same line), boy that will be fun to watch!

Agreed on skills expansion.

The skills are certainly my favorite part of the weekend. I am also in the minority of enjoying the Draft. Do they need to change some things about it? Yes, but for the most part I enjoyed it. As for the game, why not? It’s not like there are better things on the TV.

I think they should separate the drafts—one for goalies, one for d, one for forwards. Then there’s 3 last picks, and you also don’t have the captains having to pick players by certain rounds, which always takes a bit of intrigue away.

And like Gozer just said, absolutely. The most intersting thing in my mind is seeing/hearing the players in a different context away from the ice. Who gives a shit about watching them put on sweater?

If it meant having a 5/10 second lapse to cut out the swearing, etc., so be it, but mic up a few tables.

Burke's idea

What does everyone think about Brian Burke’s thoughts on having a final 6 being picked from a hat? He doesn’t like having a final pick. I personally don’t like the idea. If I was Benn I would have been hoping for the car, but I also don’t make what they do.

I agree with having more players mic’d up. Also, get a new host.

Here Here

I think people have this lofty expectation of what the all star game is going to be, maybe because it’s marketed that way or maybe people just think that because its the best players it should turn into the best game, which it obviously doesn’t. But if your expectations are in line for what the event actually is, it can be quite enjoyable. I liked watching the draft last night, it was the subtle things like Joffrey Lupul addressing the boo’s, seeing Campbell put some confetti in Hossa’s hair at the end of the draft. It’s a chance to see them relaxed which isn’t something most of us a privy to the rest of the year.

I was thinking about somethin at 3am last night...

The All-Star game is notorious for the lack of physicality. This usually results in a shoot out at the OK Corrall. It gets ridonkulous how many goals are scored.

\Even a casual hockey observer would quickly come to the conclusion that you need to “Hit someone” out there to prevent the panty waist skill players from making a farce of the game. I think Stan needs to dump all our prima donna’s and load up with thugs that want to punish the opposition. Kick as and take names – that’s the key to victory in the NHL.

what the Hawks need now, is more toughness, we desperately need more meatballs. We have a player like the washed up Patrick Kane floating around the ice instead of someone who could kick some ass.

“Hit Someone” -is clearly the answer to 99% of what ails any hockey team.

by wardrums on Jan 27, 2012 10:11 AM CST reply actions

I agree

That Taves guy doesn’t have the killer instinct, either. I mean, he’s never even been suspended. C’mon man! I don’t know when the NHL became so pussified, but I don’t like it. Just once I’d like to see that guy cross check someone in the teeth, preferably a ref. And we could use more fighting as well. At least one bench-clearing brawl per game. It should be mandated.

I like the way you think. I’m on board.

See if you can guess what I am now.

there was no way on earth that any plausible deniability was evident on that play – still hilarious, though – I was shocked that Lysiak ever did it in the first place.

by Waylon on Jan 27, 2012 11:23 AM CST up reply actions

we were laughing are butts off with the rest of the crowd until the next morning when the suspension came.

lysiak was such a fun player to watch. On the suspension he noted, “Not only doesn’t the suspension fit the crime, I didn’t get a chance to a right to give my side. There’s no appeal. That’s uncostitutional.”

Interesting side note, the years just prior to getting drafted, Lysiak was absolutely tearing up the Western Junior league scoring over 145 points two years ina row. Montreal had the second pick, and Atlanta the fifth. A guy named stan Bowman wanted to draft Lysiak for the candiens but heard he had a problem with the French speaking team. (“They were prejudiced” according to Tom.) Bowman called Lysiak up and asked him if he’d like to play for Montreal and Lysiak said, “No, not really.” In fact his agent made it known he didn’t want to play for any candian teams. Lysiak said he had difficulty coming up with bad thoings to say about the Candian teams interested in him.

montreal swapped their #2 pick with Atlanta’s #5 for future considerations. The fans in atlanta loved him.

Perhaps the supension wouldn’t have been so long if Lysiak hadn’t said “Learn how to skate,” as linesman Ron Foyt hit the deck.

If the Hawks are potentially going to deal with Montreal for defense

I’d love to see if Stan could pry Josh Gorges away from them. I think he’s the kind of tough as nails, stay at home D-man our back end could use.
Don’t know what his contract is like but I’m assuming it’s within reason in terms of length and $$ so as to make it a reasonable addition to the payroll.
Maybe we could get a package deal and get Travis Moen too. I know his name has been bandied about here on SCH before and seems like he’d be a solid addition too.
Perhaps something like Hammer (would hate to see him go but you’ve got to give something to get something), one (or maybe both) of Bickell/Frolick and a combination of mid-level pick(s) &/or prospect(s). Wouldn’t mind seeing a pick come back our way in this fantasy scenario I’m cooking up here. Maybe a 5, 6 or 7th rounder.

With no hockey to distract me my mind starts concocting these schemes that are going to send the Hawks over the top this season. Most of them are just fantastical daydreams (like NJ sending us Parise for a dirty jock and a dozen rolls of tape). But every so often I try to come up with one that might actually be plausible, and then I picture myself getting a knowing pat on the back from Stanbow while he thanks me for saving the season with my expertise.

I read in the comments on tsn

So take its “validity” with a lake of salt, but “sources” are saying we are all but a handshake away from sending Seabs and a 5th rd. pick to the Habs for Kaberle, Gill, Moen and a 2nd rounder…I think I could deal if it happens. Love me some Seabrook, but I also love me some depth, and love me some Old’donnel and Scott having near permanent homes in the press box too.

From this moment forward, the People’s Champion, The Shelby Sensation, The Reverse Apache Master, The Man with the Golden d*ck, Doctor Cock and Balls, that Kenny Powers is now dead...

Yeah I can't see that happening either.

If they were interested in moving Seabs which I’m sure they aren’t they could most certainly get better value from another team.

I don't think that it's "bad" value

Not a Kaberle or Gill fan, but it would give us a considerably more balanced corps. That and Moen would be man-crushed on like no other. I don’t want it to happen, nor do I think its even a possibility, but if we can make a move of that nature for say Leddy, how does Stan not pull the trigger?

I do

I’m not saying it has to be the Habs. Seabs for Gleason and Tuomo or Jussi would be lovely, provided they don’t lump Spacek in as well. My dreams include us somehow pulling Suter and Parise…wouldn’t that be nice!

I did hear about a week ago

from a few of the more reputable sources that a deal between Chicago & Wash had been reached but at the last minute McPhee (I think is their GM) added a prospect that SB didn’t want to part with and everything fell apart. Who the players or prospects were from Chi I’m not sure but I’m pretty sure the deal involved Erskine or Schultz (Not 100% about the names as I am getting old now) from the Caps.

Lately it seems as soon as

the opposing team enters the zone I get nervous thinking about what kind of horse shit goal Crow may let in or how the D may hang him out to dry.

In the end, Crow may be a better goalie (I’m not so sure) but the fact is that so far the D has played more responsibly in front of Ray. Why that has happened I don’t know but it’s like Crow and the D have lost confidence in each other when they’re out there together.

I think that's pretty accurate.

I’m not worried long-term about Crow. In the near term (now to the end of the Reg. Season), it may affect our team’s success significantly.

by oregon_hawk on Jan 27, 2012 2:29 PM CST up reply actions

I like Crow. Always have but,

until he proves otherwise I still feel last year may have been a perfect storm of his skills all coming together at the right time and place. I know statistics are not the be all end all of a player’s ability but his stats right now are pretty much on par with what he has done his entire career. I still think that Q should go with Ray until Crow can prove that he deserves the #1 spot. Crow may be the type of player that thrives under the pressure of losing his role on the team. Whatever it is I hope he can figure things out or the Hawks may be looking for another starting goalie in the off season.

You can check as far back as 97-98

here.

No team since 97-98 has won the Cup without recording a SO. Most finalist are near the top in SO. Example: 2010 Hawks, 11 SO (1st), 2 TSO.

Fun facts: NY Rangers did not record a SO in 3 of the 4 years between 98-01. But they got SO 19 times during those 3 seasons. And in 02 they were still last in the league with only 2 SO.

Only 2 teams have not recorded a SO in a season since the lockout. VAN in 06 (they iced 5 goalies, only one with a Sv% over .900 (.902)). And the Flyers last year, but they actually had decent goaltending (Bob and Boucher at .915 and .916 respectively).
