Life WIthout Car Bomb, Kruger
While no official word has been handed down and won't be until tomorrow, I think most of us have come to the conclusion that Dan Carcillo being seen in an Indian Head this year, or probably ever again, is not something to be expected. That sure looked nasty, and I think the best possible scenario is still a couple months -- once you add sprain and suspension (makes a fine martini, that).
So a couple things are on my mind. I have no idea how big of a loss this is. One the one had, it's a top six forward that just went down. On the other, Carcillo wasn't really a top six forward. He just happened to be playing there, occasionally well and occasionally not, and mostly in the middle. Car Bomb wasn't here to be a scorer, but to provide that beloved sandpaper. I don't actually know how much of that he was providing. There were a few games where he was noticeable physically, but there were also a few where he wasn't.
Where I land is that Carcillo still kind of seems like the 12th forward on this team, and the way things kicked he ended up shoehorned on the top six. But what worries is me is who is going to provide what Carcillo was brought here for and the Hawks still don't have enough of, and that's jam and forechecking? Nothing we've seen from the Rockford Conga Line has been that. Morin tries to be physical, but he won't be useful until he finds his scoring touch. Brandon Pirri? Certainly not. Jimmy Hayes has probably warranted a game or two more, but I'm not sitting on a hot stove waiting for that to work out. The idea of Ben Smith would fill this role, but the idea of reality of Ben Smith this year are at such a distance it requires a fuckload of postage to between the two. Andrew Shaw is awfully small. The Hawks think so much of Brett McLean they let him go to the Spengler Cup, and Brandon Segal isn't even a question, much less the answer to a question anyone's asking.
Do we have to add something else to the shopping list now?
-More worrying to me is the news that Q delivered today, which is "Marcus Kruger isn't doing well." Well no fucking shit? You mean a guy who never missed a shift after getting hit in the head repeatedly after he was rushed back from a concussion isn't doing well? The world makes no sense!
The Fifth Feather touched on it last night, and to me it's far more serious of an issue than anyone else is making it. I heard the same Barry Rozner story on The Score on Friday that they did. Whatever I may think of Rozner (and actually I think he's been pretty spot on recently now that he doesn't have Tallon or Campbell to bitch about), he's been around long enough to have sources within the organization. So when he says that some within that organization think Dave Bolland jaked it a bit with his head injury, it can't be outright dismissed.
Combine that with both Marcus Kruger and Brent Seabrook barely missing any time after taking blows to the head -- Seabrook doing so on a couple occasions -- and I'm getting close to horrified at how the Hawks are handling the main issue of the game today.
I would not be surprised if we've seen the last of Marcus Kruger this year. Would it have been different if he had been checked out right after Rick Nash punched him in the head? Would it have been different if he'd been held out for more games? These are questions that have to be asked, because something stinks.
On the ground, the Hawks are now without a second line center again, and I think we know that Patrick Kane isn't the answer. In my fantasy world, someone would tell Patrick Sharp to shut the fuck up, take his rediscovered two-way game and superb faceoff percentage back to the middle. Because it's going to be a hell of a lot easier to find another winger than another center. But that's not going to happen either.
And the Hawks very well may have created that gap for themselves.

Though I have no way of knowing what was going on re: Kruger’s transparency with trainers and other outlying factors, this is a worrisome trend, and really sucks for the kid. How bad does it have to get before even the old school realizes that you don’t play with head injuries?
Also, trade coming perhaps? I honestly just want speculation.

I'd wager that there will be a trade
but the question is, who with? Has to be a team that’s given up on this season and that narrows the field a lot.
Though neither the Ducks nor the Canadiens have seen things improve any under their new coaches (an understatement), so there’s two starting places right there. e.g. I still have daydreams about Bobby Ryan flying around in the white/red sweater…

The team that just beat us is where I'd start
Just as they did with Dustin Penner, the Edmonton media has already moved Ales Hemsky’s car to long term parking right next to Adriana La Cerva’s. He’ll be moved for a cheaper price tag than some other top 6 fillers, and soon. While we’re rummaging through Steve Tambellini’s hamper, Ladistav Smid might be an answer to our 6th defenceman problem as well. However, with Gilbert out and the already shallow blue line in Edmonton, that one is a bit more of a reach.
Still, Tambo hasn’t exactly been the hardest guy to swindle in recent years. Look at what he got for Penner last year. Filling a top 6 hole and a 6th defenceman spot for a pick and player(s) and from one team to boot sounds rather efficient. It only leaves us with replacing the bottom 6 hole opened up by Carcillo’s imminent departure.
You want speculation, there it is. It’s got historical precedent to fuel it as well.

2 years, 2.25M
Nothing we couldn’t handle. The next year of his contract is more than made up by the departures of Carcillo, Odie, Scott and Lepisto hits that are bound to come off after this year.
Furthermore, that bottom 6 hole Carcillo leaves is probably filled by the auditioning Icehogs. Morin, Smith, Hayes… whoever. It’s a bottom 6 forward spot.

$512K or whatever isn't that big a deal
If he’s attached to Fluffy being our 7/8 D man, then fine. $2.25M for a 25 year old defenceman that can make our 3rd pairing skate more than 5-10 minutes a night is palatable. He’s only got one year left. It doesn’t hamstring us this year because the cap hits for us would only be what’s remaining. As for next year, they can keep Smid at the $2.25M and Hemsky walks.
Ales Hemsky sure would look good next to Kane and Toews or Sharp and Hossa.

As long as Hemsky is trending healthier
And if he is, wouldn’t Edmonton want to keep him around to compliment the kids?

He’ll get moved at the deadline or before it. Smid, on the other hand, is much less likely. I’m merely speculating with him. Hemsky is a real, live target that I hope Stan Bowman is talking to Steve Tambellini about over some Timbits.

From What I remember
SB inquired about Smid last season and they wanted Leddy in exchange. May be wrong but it sticks in my mind for some reason.
No worries, this was the plan all along!
Unfortunately it doesn't matter how Stan views him.
For all we know that’s what he had in mind when he signed him. It’s all about how Q sees him. Of course the money isn’t a big deal, its the roster spot that’s a big deal. Him being on this team another season in unfuckingacceptable.
BTW I’m all about Smid. He’s the guy I wanted last season at the deadline. I just don’t know why Edmonton would want to move him this season.

During one of our slumps
Someone posted a fanpost on FTF speculating what it would take to get Bobby Ryan in Teal.
The most realistic offer came from Matt Taylor, one of the main blogfathers:
Freddie Hamilton, Benn Ferriero, Justin Braun and a 1st.
This was, for us, our top Forward prospect, a Forward prospect who’s had some time with the big club and can probably play the NHL game but doesn’t fit in our top 6, an exciting puck moving D-man who can play the NHL game but needs to shore up his defensive game, and the 1st, which will be a low pick.
So you’re probably looking at the best 2 kids from the Rockford Conga Line, a young D-man, and a pick.

That's pretty much exactly what I proposed (from the 'Hawks) when we had the same discussion here
a few weeks back when Ryan was supposedly on the trading block before the coaching change – 3 of the ‘Hawks best prospects and a 1st. While I’m sure many would disagree and say it’s giving up way too much, if I’m Stan Bowman I call up Bob Murray and see if he’s willing to give me Bobby Ryan for ANY 3 of our prospects (minus Brandon Saad, but the rest are fair game IMO) and we’ll toss in our 2012 1st rounder on top

I'm not really sure why Saad would be considered untouchable if your already willing to give up that much.
Ryan proven. Saad not.

I don't think Murray will let Ryan walk
for prospects and picks.. and i don’t think he’s interested in Sami or Scott.. it’d be a Leddy and prosepects/ picks, I think..
enough of the niceties: time for the eye-gouging..
and yes, I probably *should* be asleep right now!
Likely true
But if you let Ryan walk, thereby opening a huge gaping hole in your top 6 (heck, your top 3 even), knowing that you’re not going to get equal value in return, I don’t know that it makes a big deal that you get a roster player for the immediate season at hand in return.
The Ducks probably can’t even accept anyone nearing Ryan’s level in return, because it’d blow their internal cap, and anyone they’d get at that level would make more money than Getzlaf and Perry, which hurts their negotiating position with anyone else.
Leddy, I could see him being interested in, but I think, if he lets Ryan go, prospects and pics are entirely what he realistically expects.

Yeah let's not panic when we're in first place
I know they have a tough second – half schedule, but behaving in that manner is organizational suicide. Deal from a position of strength, which is exactly where the Hawks find themselves in right now, regardless of our recent lamentations.
If you are able to make that deal
Without giving up a roster player, given the age of your core, are you still disinclined to make the trade? I know it’s a lot of prospects, but, you’re hardly in need of prospects with Kane, Toews and Sharp all around for the forseeable future, right?

There’s no way I’d make that trade considering where we are right now, even though I think we need to address some things if we’re legitimately going to challenge for a conference title. Our three best prospects and a 1st rounder? That is one helluva lot for Bobby Ryan—a great player, no doubt, but my sense of things is that we can mend our holes with far less than Ryan, so I wouldn’t even consider the trade if it took that much.

the bigger issue
will be replacing Krugs. I didn’t miss Carcillo much when he was out in earlier stints.
While I’m aware that many here are high on Pirri, I’m not. His size is a disadvantage for this particular team, nor do I think his upside is that great.
Regarding Kane at center: I can live with it. I don’t think the team is any better off with Sharp at center to be honest I don’t mind Sharp having less overall control of the puck.
Yes that seems right

The 'Hawks need 1 more top-6 forward
But they needed one before Carcillo went down because he’s not really a top-6 guy in the first place. With Kruger out for the foreseeable future a center would certainly be nice, but given that Kane and/or Sharp can more than capably fill that position and given how much harder and thus more expensive it would likely be to acquire a center than a winger, the ’Hawks would be fools to limit their search for trades

good points
agree and I’m sure that’s how the organization will approach the situation.
do they need 1 more top 6 forward, or two?
depends on two things:
-Is Kane a right winger or a center?
-Is Viktor Stalberg a top six guy?
If Kane ends up skating on the wing for the bulk of the rest of the regular season, then you have a hole at 2C and at 1LW.
If Kane is the answer at center, then you need a top six LW and a top six RW.
If Vik takes one of those wing spots, then we either have a hole on the third line or we’re pushing our chips in with Bickell-Bolland-Fro.
This is Hack in the Pork Chop Express, and I'm talkin' to whoever's listenin' out there.
what would be easiest to fill (or what would be most useful to the team and being successful)
2 top 6 players, 1 top 6 and 1 3rd pairing dman, or 2 top 6 and 1 3rd pairing dman? Are there people that you’d want that would fit under our cap?
"Well now you're just talking like Foghorn Leghorn!"
getting Ruutu and Gleason

Sad game...
Hawks were uninspired against the Oils.
Hawks were beat on the board battles, especially below the goal line (is that the word on us around the league now?)
Oils were much quicker in transition.
Crow looked very soft on goals 2 and 4. (start Razor @ Philly give Crow another shot Friday)
I really wish goaltending weren’t a concern at this point, but it is. Come playoff time the team with lights-out goaltending is going far and that isn’t us right now.
I’d like to see the power play get going.
Kaner needs to show up in the goals column some time soon.
Hopefully this game was just a blip on the radar.
Let’s get back on track and stockpile some points in January!
Do we need a goalie? Or do we need a goalie!
Crawford sucked last night and even the resent wins were if’’y. By by carbomb, maybe trade him and one goalie for I don’t no maybe a power forward. With a little more size we can gain the zone on a P.P shoot in and bang the puck out of the corner. Maybe get a dirty goal or 2 not always the pretty play.. there are lots out there if you look, I’ll name a few, Taylor Pyatt, Sharp would like that! Chimera, probably love to get out of Wash..Cole Montreal, they would trade him he’s not french..Legwand out of Nash, Umberger Columbus? lots of guys that need a team to play with, Bobby Ryan would be nice but unlikely.. lots of teams need a goalie. sooner the better I say.

Fair enough.
Just trying to find something on the rosters of Montreal, Buffalo, Carolina, Islanders, or Tampa that would fit both sides. Hadn’t realized that Price had exorcised the demons of being thought of as an ok goalie in the Forum/ Bell Centre.
Really?
I get the popularity of Subban, but they have been trying to run Price out of town for 3 years. I thought that a Montreal boy in Crawford would be just the ticket, and a whole hell of a lot cheaper. So that leaves Danault, Paradis and a #1 for Subban. If that isn’t close, I’d throw in anyone else that they would want from Rockford. But seriously, The Habs need to rebuild and your are essentially getting 3 #1’s for Subban.

Really.
They had to pick between Price and Halak and Gauthier made the very unpopular choice (at the time) to go with Price. He was the team’s best player last year and this year as well until a few weeks ago. He’s still viewed as the foundation of the futur of that team (Subban being a close 2nd). No way they are moving BOTH for anything less than Kane or Toews plus something.
Marcus Kruger
Is the most important thing addressed in this little roundup to me. If he’s out, and it sounds bad right now, for extended periods of time… we’re fucked down the middle. Sharp is probably best suited to fill that spot but that takes away something from our arsenal by moving him back to center. I’m with Sam in thinking that the Pat Kane at center thing is hopefully shelved for now. It was a nice thought, and worked out in the beginning of the season, but I want no part of it any longer.

many complained at the beginning of the season that we had no real use for Kruger or Carcillo. Now we’re lamenting their loss (understanding that part of the lamentation re Krugs is that he seems like a good guy with a bad injury). If a team can’t sustain itself when two bottom-6 guys go down, it has no business pretending to be a contender.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Jan 3, 2012 10:01 PM CST up reply actions
I'm sorry for being slow today but what exactly is the point that's being made...
…about Bolland? That his concussion wasn’t as bad as he made it out to be? If so, what has lead people within the organization to feel that way and what does that say about Bolly’s overall approach to the game?
I think they're saying
that some members of the organization thought Bolland took to long to recover from his concussion, and that those Hawks people felt he should have just sucked it up and told them he was ok even if he wasn’t so he could get back on the ice sooner. Sort of a, “Toughen up, you’re a hockey player” mentality, rather than a, “take as long as you need, your health is our main concern” approach. And then the question arises of whether or not the same approach was taken with Seabss and Kruger’s head hits this season.
So it's really a criticism of the Hawks' organizational approach
Gotcha. Now it makes sense to me. Although it doesn’t exactly fill me with confidence regarding the people in charge.
Yes, that is a much more succinct way of putting it, haha.
It’s not known who the sources were or what level they were at in the organization though, so they may not necessarily be in charge.
I personally think they’ve been a bit sketchy with their treatment of Kruger and am on the fence about Seabs so I’m just taking it with a little salt for now.
Seabs was a playoff game so you can ALMOST understand their wanting to get him out there.
Almost.
I do stuff for CheerTheAnthem
oh, I was thinking of earlier this year.
I definitely think they rushed him back in the playoffs. You could see it in how he played his first game back.
And yeah, I can almost understand it as a fan, but that’s a person and that will always take precedence for me.
Agree.
Does all of this “new understanding” of the long-term damage done by repeated concussions make anyone else wonder how both boxing and MMA aren’t illegal yet? As the NFL and NHL rightly see this as the biggest potential threat to the game, you have HBO, Showtime and Vs. continuing to run Saturday night boxing and MMA pay per view specials. Just seems remarkably inconsistent to me. Maybe the sad truth is that no one gives a shit about the competitors in those sports.
there's a whole pile of OT sense there
one only has to see the damage done to several of the great boxers of our times to understand it.. I personally nearly cried watching Ali lighting the lamp and was one of millions who sucked in our breath when it looked like he’d drop it.. but Hockey ain’t boxing.. in those “sports” brutal headshots and beatings are the norm.. Hockey is about skill, speed and skating.. with some hard hitting and violence thrown in.. these guys aren’t taught from day one about absorbing deliberate blows to the head as ‘Fighters’ are.. they’re taught how to play Hockey..

Notices of Intent
Not entirely true, mate
Physicality is not an incidental part of hockey—-at least in the North American game—-and players at all competitive levels are taught how to roll with hits to minimize damage to the body, including the head.
However, we know that when it comes to concussions in the NHL, fighting IS incidental to the issue, yes? Bodychecking causes the majority of concussions. Every study says so. If you really want to address the issue, consider starting a no-check NHL movement.
Non-fighters usually don’t fight, but this is not to say that they don’t practice how to protect themselves. There are grapple techniques every player intending to play pro pick up, and learning to take a punch is, in fact, a skill. (you might notice most hockey punches don’t actually land on the head despite the fact that this is the intended target.)
Boxing is another animal altogether. I’ve done both (hence the “southpaw” moniker), and I agree that boxing is nothing like hockey fighting.

yeah, I'm agreeing with this
when I talk about the “deliberate blows to the head” bit I’m mostly thinking of those chilling lines in the NYT Boogaard article where they talk about enforcers learning how to punch from boxing pros.. I’ve never boxed, but I do know boxers and under no circumstances should anyone be punching anyone else outside of a ring with that sort of blow.
And on the non-check thing.. I think we’re all agreed on what constitutes a good check withing the “Classic” rules of Hockey.. the problem comes when players (and the game) have gotten so big and fast that what was acceptable and encouragable in days gone by is just no longer permissible.. simply because people are getting hurt.
Not trying to knock the fine physical tradition of Hockey, just that it’s going to have to adapt to a changed game, like it or not.

Good Point
Even routine, clean checks are turning guys’ heads into lava lamps because players are so big, fast, and strong these days.
I wasn’t being a smart-ass when I suggested a no-check movement. I wouldn’t be a fan of it, but if we really want to protect these guys, that may be the only definitive way to go about it.

if the league maybe appointed a guy to make sure all checks were within certain parameters and.. oh, who am I kidding!
Actually, I think Shanahan has (mostly) been a big step in the right direction.. checking can be kept in the game but the rules will be tough and headshots will have to go.. and i think the sun is probably setting on fighting, right or wrong..

You are spot on with this
The league will have to decide between speed and hits, either slow players down and keep hitting, or keep the speed and hitting goes
or make the change to a Europe - sized rink
which won’t happen because the NHL owners will not allow losing revenue from the seats that would be taken out – but I think that would solve many problems. The player’s union should make an attempt at this action nevertheless.
Practice SUCKED as a kid when you were on the Olympic sized rink...
So much more skating.
I do stuff for CheerTheAnthem
yeah but since the players are faster now
and many are also bigger, a larger rink size would make the concussions being caused by checks more unlikely, would it not?
Oh I wasn't taking a position either way
I just HATED those big rinks as a kid….at least during practice…especially if you were being bag skated..
I do stuff for CheerTheAnthem
Bag skates weren't exactly any more fun on smaller rinks
I remember having a regular Monday afternoon practice on the studio rink at Heartland in Lincolnwood (about half the size of a regular rink). Bag skates on that tiny piece of ice sucked just as hard as bag skates on an Olympic-sized rink

that's an interesting idea
but not sure if it solves the problem. There would have to be significant study to prove that giving the players more space would reduce their ability to hit each other. As you say, none of the owners would agree to shrinking the number of seats

Martial Arts
Hockey fighters learning martial arts to get an advantage after dropping the gloves isn’t that uncommon.
At a meet and greet, Darren McCarty once told me all he learned from taking aikido.
I would be very surprised if current NHL players weren’t also learning some martial arts on the side.

Regarding Bolland and his head last year....
Call me an idiot (pause for response…) but I don’t quite get what Rozner is saying about Bolland last year. Did Bolly “fake” his concussion symptoms? Take longer than the doctors thought he should? And is Sam saying that Bolly’s symptoms were real but the Hawks’ brass/doctors “thought” Bolly was faking it? And that means the Hawks were trying to rush back a guy who should have been given more time?
Was Bolland soft? Are the Hawks stupid for trying to force him back? What exactly is being said here?

for me, is because people here and elsewhere are taking what Rozner reported: “people in the organization thought Bolland milked his concussion”

I don't think it's anything like damning accusations
look at the recent history and tell me where anyone is wrong in discerning a pattern. Can we know for sure? Of course not – but after raising a number of questions after the Seabrook situation last year, Kruger’s deal this year raises a ton of red flags. We could start with why on earth did they feel the need to shove him back out there so soon?
I’m not just trying to stir the pot, but my guess is that he passed on all his tests. This isn’t an exact science. And a person with a concussion is likelier to get another with a blow to the head. I’m not saying there’s nothing there to wonder about, but I just don;‘t see it. You’d get a full-blown rebellion at some point from the players themselves.
www.mjt.org
I've heard other athletes say
they purposely did bad on the initial tests so that their baseline was low and they could come back sooner. Not that Kruger did this, but as a young guy, he might have felt good play by Pirri or other young players would put his place on the team in jeopardy.

Regarding concussions, you’re never going to be able to slow the speed and/ or reduce the size impact on today’s game. I think that the answer is in the equipment (softer shoulder pads/ no hard plastic and better helmets) and the size of the ice.
And as far as the rink size, I can’t figure which would be better… smaller rinks like the old Boston Garden, so no one get get really moving as fast. Or larger international size rinks so that guys can more easily avoid each other…?

This
I’ve heard some discussions that the baseline should be more of a physical test than a mental aptitude test (or at least both run in tandem). The reasoning would be as follows:
- player takes head shot
- player goes to dark room for mental aptitude baseline test to assess immediate distress
- player is withheld from current game regardless of baseline aptitude results
- following day (or within 24 hour period) baseline physical test is run (this would be exertion type activity, VO2 max, repetitive box jumps etc.)
- if player shows any measurable decline in physical baseline they are shut down indefinitely (odds are that any PCS will render the athlete far below normal standards very quickly)
- depending on severity, subsequent mental aptitude baseline tests are run periodically until it’s determined that a player is “right” enough to retake physical baseline testing (while allowing for some degeneration of physical prowess due to a period of withdrawn physical activity).
I think it makes some sense and, obviously, the key in there is that the person is removed from the game with no chance of returning…
You are next.

I’ve heard the same, and it’s definitely possible. I just think the whole thing, as an organizational policy, so to speak, is ridiculously far-fetched. These players are assets in a business. Sure, yes, it can be argued that there might is a short-sighted owner and a ruthless GM … but seriously, folks … is there ANY evidence of this, any whatsoever? Rocky Wirtz and Stan Bowman are playing with the well-being of players, and the health of business assets, over and over again; it’s endemic? This isn’t directed at you Katherine … I’m just expanding.
www.mjt.org
I should clarify
it was in an article I read about the NFL and CTE a few years ago and the player they talked to was a former NFLer. I don’t remember which player or article, though. So it does happen at the professional level in at least one sport.
I’m not sure what I think about this. It’s certainly possible for the Hawks to take this approach, though definitely not smart financially, as you say. I’m just hesitant to throw my weight behind the unnamed sources of Barry Rozner.
I recognized the argument, that players intentionally bag their baseline tests. I don’t recall the context, but it was definitely an article, maybe a conversation on HNIC, and it had to do with the NHL. It’s definitely something I can imagine … perhaps less so as the information continues to grow.
It’s hard to fault the Hawks if the players are doing it. I mean, I have no idea what the tests are and how easy it is to fake results/effort in them. But unless there’s a way to manage the tests in such a way as to eradicate cheating, I don’t know what an organization can do. If a player passes the test, if the doctors say he’s okay, and if the player wants to play … I just don’t know what they would do.
www.mjt.org
My 12 year old son
just had a concussion. They gave him a computer test that I assume they have given to many non concussed kids of different ability levels. My son is an A-B student, so they compared his results to other A-B students his age. I’m wondering if athletes shouldn’t take a baseline test but should be compared to other people their own age and relative ability, thus removing the tanking the baseline test.
Interesting. I can see this becoming an increasingly complex debate for the league, but one that will definitely happen.
I’d like to know more about the tests; this whole conversation has piqued my curiosity. It seems to me they would have to factor in height/weight/age … but man, how do you group according to ability/performance, how can that properly be measured?
Anyone out there know about the tests NHLers go through for this stuff?
www.mjt.org
not sure on NHL tests
but my son was compared to other kids with similar grades. He was pretty below average in the time it took him to respond to questions and other motor skill stuff. His overall knowledge was fine. The scary part is, this test was given to him a week after the concussion happened. I would have swore he was fine two days after it happened
at least they could hold out the player for the rest of the game
that would seem to be the bare minimum of taking the proper precation, I think.
your second point is a very real concern
I was a long jumper in HS – #2 guy on the team (we sent 2 jumpers to most meets). Tore my quad at the beginning of my sophomore year, and never jumped in a competetive meet again – not because I didn’t heal, but because I got replaced, and never got a chance to earn my spot back.
That was almost 15 years ago, and I’m still upset about it. The decision not to come back early was easy for me: I was physically unable to run and jump. But in the case of concussions, there’s no knowing for sure if you’re ready. What is for sure is that every day you sit out is another day someone else is in your spot.
This is, in my mind, the real problem. In many cases, even trained professionals have to rely on the word of someone who wants nothing more than to return to the game, rather than relying on observable data. Until that changes, I don’t think we’re going to see a substantial decrease in the number of concussions.
I wish you were right about that
but I think that most hockey players are still from the old school line of thinking, and if a coach pressures them back on to the ice regardless of how they’re really feeling, I would tend to believe that they’d suck it up and go out there regardless.
No one is saying the Hawks are intentionally icing concussed players or that there is some grand conspiracy
however, if you look at the evidence of how Havlat, Seabrook, and now Kruger were handled, it’s not good. The Hawks seem to operate on a strategy where they let their concussed players dictate whether they’re going to play or not. That’s a great way to avoid any kind of culpability. “Hey, it’s not our fault. He passed all the concussion tests. Our doctors said he was good to go.”
Then if the player takes too long as in Bolland’s case, he’s subject to second-guessing.
It just leaves me feeling icky about the whole thing.

TBH
If Bolland did delay coming back a little from a concussion, Bravo to him. The skaters health needs to come first, and each skater needs to be the final fail safe in protecting himself from the long term effects. If a player thinks it is too soon too fast, the organization needs to back the player, because he knows better then anybody if he is alright, and they also need to be cautious of the player in too much of a hurry to return as well. Concussions are the big topic of the day, and for good reason. For a long time we knew what they were, but knew and still know very little of their short, mid and long prognosis, but what is understood is the damage can be more serious then we ever suspected, and quick repeated concussions can be very devastating to the brain. When you are dealing with one’s grey matter, you just can not screw around with “mights”, you need to know better than that, not to the extent of certainty, but as least to the vast majority of instances. Because there will be a day for all players where their skills have faded, time has taken its toll, the joy of playing the game has passed. The last thing that also needs to be taken is their mind, this needs to be left as healthy and sound as can be. The mind does not go away, it is always their, it is their as a player and will be after those days are gone. Damage to the Brain and mind is too much to ask for, the risk is too high to go about it carelessly, it needs to be protected, at least until we do really understand what a concussion does to it over the life term and not the season’s point total.

I guess to add on to your point and include something I meant to above
it’s not good when the player has to be the one making the adult decisions as in Bolland’s case. With Havlat, Seabrook, and Kruger, the Hawks willingly let them play even though common sense and maturity said otherwise.
FifthFeather.com
by El Duque's Raft on Jan 3, 2012 7:24 PM CST up reply actions
But it's more than common sense and maturity
“Grey matter” is a pretty appropriate description in this case. It’s easy to look at an x-ray and notice when a leg or wrist (etc.) injury hasn’t quite healed. It’s much much harder to know when a concussion has healed. I would always suggest erring on the side of caution, especially when considering the health of someone’s brain. But the simple fact is at this time, we really don’t know where that line between caution and recklessness is.
I’m not ready to make any accusations just yet. I would certainly hope that the organization is putting health before revenue, and if they aren’t, something needs to change. But every concussion is different. Shoving players back on the ice too soon is terrible, but keeping everyone out a year because of Crosby’s example is probably not warranted. At this point, we just don’t know enough – about concussions, and about how the Hawks brass is handling them.
I understand what you’re saying, and I think there’s merit to it. But what’s the alternative if they pass their tests? Do the Hawks brass have to keep them out an extra week? Two? A month?
The implication here is that Bolland had passed the tests and yet kept himself out. Is there any evidence whatsoever to this? I’m not suggesting Rozner is lying, but could he have misunderstood? Could he have communicated the idea poorly? Those options are more likely in my mind than the brass having grown pissed that he didn’t return directly upon passing the tests … if that’s even the case.
www.mjt.org
It needs to be a balance
A very delicate one at that. Because one passes all the fine motor and memory tests does not mean they are symptom free and their brain has healed. Are the tests sufficient for analyzing the danger has passed? The test for determining if one has occurred seems on the whole to be fine, but coming back it is different. This needs to be approached with the same diligence as the initial diagnosis. Just out of the nature of the beast, I doubt it can ever be 100% correct, however to be able to at least say for the vast majority it is a go also along with integrity, responsibility ,intuition and common sense from the Physician, Player and Team with all three giving the green light that the problem has passed, I would feel fine about.

Possible side benefit to Carbombs stupidity?
The Hawks as a team see what he was brought in for, toughness and grit. The Hawks see what happens when those who have been here who can play like that but don’t, somebody will be brought in who will. The Hawks saw last night the result of it going to far and out of control. Those players who have been here and can play hard and gritty, but also smartly and skillfully realize it has to them to be the ones who bring it, and not have to resort to a lose canon again. I think we know who those Hawks are, and it is not John Scott! Mayers is already doing it, will the others now follow suit?
I think they just might, not out of want, but necessity.

Carcillo is officially done as a sweater wearing Blackhawk
I was at last night’s game (I know, YOU"RE HAPPY FOR ME !!) and the immediate reaction of Toews and Sharp to the hit spoke volumes. Carcillo lost the game, lost his teammates and put an end to his career with the Hawks.
I’m guessing his leg is messed up enough to the point Bowman will banish him to the IR the remainder of the season. That’s of course AFTER Shanahan lays down the big wood. I’m guessin he gets a well deserved 20 game suspension. Meanwhile Patrick Kane and the more “stylistic” members of the Hawks will want to play with their head on a swivel for awhile. Carcillo’s egregious act is going to bait some opponent to take a run at Kane…you watch.
Carcillo is a punk. He won’t make his 40th birthday. Good fucking riddance.
The Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup in 2010.
I believe only Mayers has claimed to have seen the hit.
If Sharp and Toews didn’t see it, maybe they just smelled something bad when you saw their faces.
I can almost guarantee more than Jammer saw it
No one wants to talk about it with the press.
Chicagoan in the Lou.
I'm not defending Carbomb here
but for whatever reason his hit last night reminded me of Buff’s hit on Pronger in the finals. I have watched both hits several times and I fail to see much difference in them.
Again, I don’t know that Carbomb really makes a difference for this team one way or the other, I’m just looking at the two hits and wondering what is the difference besides both guys got up and skated away.
They were way more side to side on that one, both about to play the puck, and it was right off a faceoff, not a race to the end boards. Carcillo wasn’t making a play for the puck. Plus, Buff checked Pronger with a shoulder, didn’t shove him face-first into the boards. I think they were both very different hits.
www.mjt.org
Pronger hadn't played the puck and he's between Buff and the puck
Pronger’s impact with the boards, while probably less of a jolt due to less speed, is pretty similar to Gilberts.
Not sure how you can say Carbomb isn’t making a play for the puck, if he moves Gilbert out of the way the puck is right there waiting for him
I do wish Carbomb would have wrapped Gilbert up and ridden him to the boards while holding him up but is that not a penalty as well?
I haven’t re-watched and will have to trust you on this. I remembered it more as a side-by-side hit with a big shoulder from Byfuglien; maybe he did shove him.
But I don’t see Carcillo’s hit as a play for the puck, although we’re into intention here and it’s impossible to reason through it, I saw it as an “engagement” of the player almost exclusively.
That wrapping-up thing … Burke has lobbied hard to bring that back so that attacking players have more choice. I think it’s a good idea.

Ya, looks to me like they’re side by side when contact is initiated, that Buff hammers him with arm and shoulder, and that Pronger is not even remotely in a defenseless position.
www.mjt.org
I don't see how Gilbert is any less defenseless than Pronger was
nor do I see how Buff’s hit is any less dangerous to Pronger. The speed before the hit is the only difference.
not just speed - but direction as well
As FFIC points out below, Pronger is skating along the boards and gets hit from the side. 99 times out of 100, Pronger absorbs that hit in stride (and usually still gets the puck – that bastard) because he can use his outside skate to brace/compensate for the collision. He was just unlucky that time because his feet were together.
Contrast that with the Gilbert hit. Carcillo noticed he was beat, so slowed up to get behind Gilbert, and, with both arms, propelled him in such a way that he had no chance to stop, given the direction of his movement and the direction of the hit.
Yes – the actual contact with the boards looks similar in the 2 vids, but the plays that create that contact are very different. Hits from behind are inherently more dangerous because the player getting hit has a much smaller chance to brace himself, given the position of the skate blades. Even on turf, this is the case, but the issue is compounded on ice.
And in terms of intent – I can’t know what was going on in the 2 players’ brains, but from the vids, it looked like Buff initiated contact in the act of trying to get the puck, while Carcillo gave up on getting the puck so he could make the hit. Buff probably should have been called for interference, but it was nowhere near as dangerous a hit as Carcillo’s.
I've watched it at least 20 times now
and I disagree that Car slows up, I did finally pay more attention to where the puck was and it appears that Car could have made more of an attempt to play the puck and put much less effort in hitting Gilbert.
In the end, I think its easier for us to accept Buff’s hit as legit because we all hated Pronger at that point and most never like Carbomb to start with. But they are very similar hits. Pronger has no more chance to protect himself than does Gil.
to each their own
10 people watching the same video can see 10 different things. And while I disagree with you, I can see where you’re coming from. But if given the choice personally, I’d much rather take the hit the Proger took than the one Gilbert took, whether or not I knew the hits were coming. (And yes, I hate Pronger – mostly because he’s a dick, but also because he’s a douche.)
The funny thing is
at the time I loved that hit by Buff, I watched it several times to relish in Pronger getting nailed. Actually I still like watching it but some of the fun has been taken out of it now that Pronger is out with melon issues

plus the difference in speed; plus Byfuglien and Pronger are moving along the goal line whereas Carcillo and Gilbert were clearly headed to the boards, again at high speed; plus Byfuglien was interested in getting to the puck. Also, look at the stances just before the hit. Pronger left himself vulnerable by having his feet too close together. He had no triangle for support and that’s not Byfuglien’s fault or responsibility to assess that in an instant. Gilbert looked like he was actually trying to brace himself for the hit. Every player is vulnerable in that moment and every player knows it. Plus it’s a two-hand crosscheck from Carcillo whereas Byfuglien just used his beef shank of a shoulder.

by flyersfaninchicago on Jan 3, 2012 9:14 PM CST up reply actions
And Car isn't interested in getting the puck?
Not like the puck was heading the other direction, it ended up where Gil and Car did. So you agree that Car and Gil were at a higher rate of speed? It would stand to reason that Buff had more time to asses the opposing players status than Car did. Buffs 260 lb shoulder doesn’t equal Car’s two hands?
I don't think he showed interest
in pursuing the puck. He’s paying no attention to it at all. A different kind of player would have been skating back to get the puck, which is the point in the end.
I’m repeating myself, but Byfuglien had absolutely no responsibility for Pronger putting himself in that position and leveled him with a clean hard shoulder on the way to getting puck possession. What Carcillo did would be a cross-checking or high-sticking penalty in another context. Both hands on the stick, held parallel, driving into the opposition at shoulder height.

it's not cross checking
It’s a technicality but Car is holding his stick with his right hand only. I did finally pay more attention to where the puck was at the time of the hit and I do think Car should have made more of an effort to play the puck than he did.
At the very least Buff’s hit is interference and would be a boarding penalty today.
So then I’ll just say that in a different context what Carcillo did with his hands is still a penalty. You could argue that Byfuglien interfered with Pronger but there’s nothing about the nature or severity of his hit that’s illegal.

Don't get me wrong
what Car did is a penalty and he should get suspended. If Buff makes that hit today, its a suspendable hit IMO. And you should visit more often

Way to ruin it
I got all excited for a second – I was about to go put a bunch of money on the Bruins…
Yes it is
I just find it interesting that Buff got no penalty at all for that hit and some here want Carbomb gone from the league for a similar hit. I fully understand that Car has a vast history of stupidity
I disagree
the result was almost the same, an opposing player goes flying into the boards awkwardly.
For full disclosure, I loved the Buff hit and watched it repeatedly. My initial reaction to Carbomb’s hit was ‘oh fuck’. Looking back, IMO the hits were the same
The result of taking a stick to the face and puck is almost the same too
A bloody face.
The biggest difference was Buff’s hit was a shoulder check, and Carcillo shoved an off balance player face-first into the boards. They’re not that similar.
Chicagoan in the Lou.
really?
Pronger doesn’t go face first into the boards? Gilbert is no more off balance than pronger was
dude these guys just hate carbomb

by ChicagoNativeSon on Jan 4, 2012 8:50 AM CST up reply actions
Well, if he did your Grandma - does that mean he replaced Burish?
"What doesn't kill us makes us stronger"
but were the hits the same? a push, ignoring the puck, and throwing the player into the boards?
no one is comparing results here, just the hit itself
"Well now you're just talking like Foghorn Leghorn!"
i mean did buff launch a player into the boards the way carcillo did?
i deem a hit dirty by the hit itself, not the results – often time clean hits result in injury and dirty ones don’t.
"Well now you're just talking like Foghorn Leghorn!"
It didn't have the same speed
but yes he did. Youtube it, I was pretty shocked at how similar the hits are minus the speed that Gilbert and Car have.
Yes I agree a clean hit can result in injury and a dirty hit may not
ok i'll pull it up when i get the chance
one big thing though is the fact that it was a different time, and the rules were different then versus now – thankfully
"Well now you're just talking like Foghorn Leghorn!"
Yes it was
but that was less than 2 years ago.
And I agree it’s for the better that these hits go away
actually just looked at it - still seems different to me
shoulder to shoulder versus carcillo going from the side to the back to push him with a shove that launched him into the boards.
less then 2 years ago i’m pretty sure the hit cooke laid on savard was legal too. so i don’t like to compare what offenses were punishable year over year
"Well now you're just talking like Foghorn Leghorn!"
Watch Car's hit again
he hits Gilbert on the shoulder not the back.
The fact that Cooke’s hit was legal 2 years ago or 30 years ago is pretty disgusting, but I get your point
i think carcillo was behind gilbert while buff was next to him
also, rules are rules at this stage, so even if its the exact same, its illegal now
"Well now you're just talking like Foghorn Leghorn!"
Yeah I get it
Just think Carbomb is getting scorched when maybe he shouldn’t. And I hated the guy before this year and wasn’t thrilled when he was signed.
That’s not to say I don’t think he should get suspended
If you listen to the goons
from the past talk about the pressure that they felt to fight every game, how it made them sick and anxious. He’s not a goon, but a guy like Carcillo is on a team to make an impact with physical play. If he’s too cautious he could play himself out of a job. You can conclude that the guy is just reckless and careless, not some sociopath who can skate better than the general population. (Trevor Gillies seems that kind of guy). The forces and trends in the game now are slowly marginalizing this kind of player because it’s being decided that the costs are becoming too high.

Sorry, but I disagree
I don’t think it’s even close to the same hit. Buff’s was two guys skating along the boards together and a clean shoulder. Carcillo’s was a shove from behind on a guy who was vulnerable.
I was a Carcillo fan from his days in Phoenix. He’ll get 5-8 games for the hit and 2 more for his rep.
It's still no matt cooke hit or for that matter bertuzzi

Hi! Remember me? We met on the last thread
I asked you for an example of this league taking revenge on skill players for a fringe player being an idiot thing- preferably an example from the post-lockout era.
It’s okay. I’ll wait.
Chicagoan in the Lou.
Marcus Kruger is the one to be worried about
Kruger is superlatively talented and has the potential to be a high quality top two line center in this league. He is just scratching the surface of that talent.
The concussion thing with him scares the beejezus out of me. Shut the kid down for the entire season if it has to come to that. He’s too valuable of a future piece for the Hawks. Even if he was a fringe player, the thing you do is treat the concussion the right way.
The Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup in 2010.
"the thing you do is treat the concussion the right way"
I picture this being read in a Jimmy Stewart sort of way, straight out of the 1940s. Or Clark Gable maybe, talking to Claudette Colbert in a shotgun-fashion back forth with lots of “see’s” at the ends of sentences.

2 cents worth
Blackhawks do not need Carcillo. They do need Kruger or a replacement now. Cap space may not be the issue for you, but what you’re willing to trade right now for a top six forward is an issue. Is trading Saad worth getting a Cup this year? Or is he untouchable?
The one thing I noticed about Carcillo’s hit was the moment he finished the hit. he was looking at the ref to see if a hand was going up.

what's the right piece?
Saad will be ready sooner than later (2013?) and he’s a big body, something the team could use more of IMO.
So do I think he should be untouchable? no. But would we use him to get a good complimentary player for just this one season? No way.
If I'm Stan, the only way I'd even consider moving Saad
is if I absolutely, no-other-choice, have to to get a guy like Bobby Ryan – still young (25), an established all-star caliber player, and signed for 3 or 4 more years at a somewhat sizable but certainly manageable cap hit. That sort of move would be filling a hole for the long-term, and even then I’d be reluctant and try to offer basically anything else (prospect-and-pick-wise) to get him and still hang on to Saad. For a rental player, not a chance.
There are three types of people in this world: those who can count, and those who can't.

Yes, the next few weeks will be tough, being short handed on the top six
And yes, we’ll probably lose 1st in the league, conference, and division, at least temporarily.
But I prefer to think about what this team has, rather than what it has not:
Some great young forwards.
Some solid D in the top four.
Lot’s a cap space.
An owner and management committed to excellence.
Long term, it will be okay. Short term it may be what separates real fans from bandwagon jumpers.

Diving is the worst
I wish penalties were called for that more often
They've been overly strict where they don't need to be ( see: the hooking call that wasn't; the spearing call) and overly lax on actually dangerous plays (the elbow that drew blood but wasn't double minored, the goalie run).
Not what I expect from a crew reffing a prestige game like this one.

Couple really weird bounces involved in that number.
Canada’s actually looked like the better team for decent chunks of the night. Russian goalie is putting on a clinic, though. He’s been a lot of fun to watch.

both van and detroit are behind us by 1 now, and we have a game in hand against vancouver
"Well now you're just talking like Foghorn Leghorn!"
The Sharks could come even with us, since they have four games in hand
But I think by the end of the week we’ll be third in the league depending on what Boston and the Rangers do
jeez didn't realize they had that many games in hand
and yeah, we’ll see what happens with those teams, just more concerned with our conference though

I would just like Boston to lose horribly this month
As proof that they can be beaten
that would certainly be nice, and i def agree with you on that

Can't help but feel that there is no shame in this one for Canada.
Hell of a comeback against bad bounces and bad refs. Refs sometimes hurt Russia too, though. Maybe next year we’ll get a crew that allows exciting hockey for the whole game.
Go Sweden? I can’t say I want Russia to win out after watching this one.

I’ll also be staring out my office window in anticipation of doom. Maybe I’ll take the wife and son on a roadtrip to Lethbridge just in case this imminent apocalyptic meteor actually strikes!

any meteor destroying Both Calgary and Edmonton
will be a problem for North America and likely the rest of the world. They’re not exactly surgical in impact.
But in the end, I think it's going to come back to the Globetrotters, because if there's one thing they know, it's "globe-trotting!"
Haha. Screw Canada
Not even shitty refs could save them.

If envy is the reason I don't like Canada Hockey
Is envy the reason you don’t like the Hawks rivals? Because those sure aren’t my reasons.
Chicagoan in the Lou.
I don’t like our rivals as viewed from my Tower of Comparison. I like our guys better because I know them best and because they’re wrapped up in the nostalgia of my youth, and our rivals are therefore The Other. If they were better I would envy them their talent, like I did for about a decade while we wallowed in our own filth. My hatred of our rivals is in inverse proportion to their success as measure by our own lack of it. If I was a fan of the US team, that is, I’d envy Canada their success. right now I envy the Russians the boldness of their wins last year and this, and it kills me. If we were massive underdogs I’d envy and hate them even more.
I’m not completely trying to be a dick; I’m trying to be a dick only insofar as it balances your wish to have us screwed for losing.
www.mjt.org
If there's ANY envy from me toward Canada Hockey
It’s simply the fact that Canada can get their most talented athletes to play the game. Outside of Michigan, Minnesota, Mass, and parts of NY, a vast majority of our most talented are funneled into the football/basketball/baseball or track cycle. Can you imagine if Cam Newton or Brian Urlacher had been given skates and a stick instead of a football?
Chicagoan in the Lou.
What are your reasons, then? No one hates us, we're lovable...except for you-know-who on the far left coast
No Swagger, No Dagger
O, Canada
of course your mom loves you. It’s either she loves you or she becomes a crack whore out of depression. To the hockey world, however, you’re a bunch of dickbags…and I mean that in the friendliest sense possible.
But in the end, I think it's going to come back to the Globetrotters, because if there's one thing they know, it's "globe-trotting!"
I love Canada outside of international hockey
Legal pot, public healthcare, and ice fishing- sign me up!
However, your failures in international hockey amuse me.
Chicagoan in the Lou.
get this alright..
it’s like me with England: like the place, lived there long enough, good people.. but I want their International Sports Teams to die in Freak Gardening Accidents..
enough of the niceties: time for the eye-gouging..
and yes, I probably *should* be asleep right now!
I'm the same way with England in soccer
Want Gerrard to be a beast when playing with Liverpool. Want him to look like a putz when he has those stupid lions on his chest.

If Montador's better then hell no
If not, I feel like Q will retry a 32-6 combination, accompanied by much crying and drinking from all of us here.
I just don’t know what Lepisto does that is so much worse than OD or Scott.
if monty is better then i would like to see him and lepisto
rather then monty and scott, or scott and od if monty is not better.

reading my comment over, i can see how it would be confusing! let me rephrase completely
essentially, if monty is better i want him and lepisto, but we’ll prob get monty/scott or monty/od. if monty is NOT better, od/lepisto or scott/lepisto, but after last game we’ll probably get od/scott.

I get it Carcillo is a repeat offender and should have know better
….but Gilbert hits the brakes and leans into Carcillo to shield the puck. At that point it is man vs. man, Gilbert keeping Carcillo away and Carcillo trying to get thru Gilbert all is the name of the puck. Carcillo pushed too hard and Gilbert pushed too little. Carcillo is surprised that Gilbert folds soquickly. Carcillo is looking at the ref leading to Carcillo’s injury.
Gilbert goes for contact and puck…Carcillo goes for body first then puck.
