Time To Reconvene

Deadspin's new face of the league, if you can believe that.

Everyone have a nice break? Hope so, because the NHL is throwing all of us right back into the deep end at first asking, commencing the closing kick of the season with a little encounter in Riot City (did I promise to stop making riot jokes a while ago? Oh well. It's still kind of funny. And it's shorter than We Kind Of Stole All Our Lame Traditions From Somewhere Else And We Hit The Ice to U2 City). So, what's going on?

-We only did a brief fanshot about it, but I guess I should expound on the acquisition of Brendan Morrison (only one "s" people). First of all, it's basically no risk, because Brian Connelly has fallen way down the defensive prospect depth chart. Olsen, Johns, Clendenning, and probably Lavin are thought more highly of by the powers that be. So the Hawks gave up a player who will never play for them.

Do I think Morrison can handle the #2 role for the rest of the year? Sure don't. But that doesn't mean he can't be of service there at times. As The Fifth Feather tweeted, the Hawks will probably just rotate Kruger, Morrison, and Sharp in that role depending on match ups and form, and that's ok. The definite conclusion we can reach is that the 4th line got stronger, because whether Kruger or Morrison is centering it, it moves Mayers back to wing where he's probably better suited. He can take Kruger's draws if necessary. When everyone is healthy, a 4th line of Mayers-Kruger/Morrsion-Shaw looks pretty all right to me. And yes, that's where I think Shaw will eventually land.

As for Morrison helping the drowning penalty kill, I'm skeptical of that. He wasn't killing penalties in Calgary, though he did last year. He didn't in Washington the year before that. The only thing I can suggest he can do is help the Hawks win more draws on it, as they only have Toews and Mayers doing so now. The rest of it? Not sure he's got the juice in the legs to really be effective, unless he can take Nick Leddy's spot on the kill and I don't think that's happening.

-As for what this means, I think we're all just going to have to prepare for the Hawks to get a defenseman and then that's probably going to be it. While I'd still like a bowling ball of a top six winger to help open things up when the Hawks don't get to hit an oil patch on the freeway in the neutral zone, I don't see the Hawks getting one. Quite frankly there aren't that many out there to be had (*cough* Tuomo Ruutu *cough*).

With Gleason and Beauchemin re-upping with their respective sinking ships, that list is shrinking. Bryan Allen seems to be one that keeps coming up. That would be fine. Hal Gill would not.

And I think that's it for now.

Too bad Beauchemin is "gone"

That could’ve been nice. Not familiar w/ Gleason’s game. Thought there was a rumor about Campoli? (Not sure I’d want that, but worth considering)

by Hawk 4 Life on Jan 30, 2012 5:26 PM CST reply actions

I don't see how a Campoli redux

Is even feasible, much less the sollution. Seems like Lepisto more or less already has Campoli’s game, but Q hates him for one reason or another ( maybe Lepisto ran over Q’s dog)

Am I paranoid? I don't know. I went to a therapist once, but I left before he gave me the diagnosis, cause he had it out for me.

by Detroit Must Die on Jan 30, 2012 5:54 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

or maybe

it’s that Lepisto just is not that good (I know, didn’t stop him from dressing Scott . . . ).

The few times I'ven seen Lepisto

he’s looked decent enough. Definitely deserves more ice time, especially in light of how much Scott has received. Maybe Q has two dogs, and Lepisto caused both to expire.

agree...

the guy should be getting 15-16 minutes every time he plays.

by aeroplane on Jan 30, 2012 6:44 PM CST up reply actions

this comment is completely unsubstantiated but

given the fact that Q values work ethic and taking into account Lepisto’s twitter feed….does anyone think that perhaps Lepisto is in the doghouse because of his lack of work ethic/focus?

sure…but that doesn’t explain anything. Lepisto did well in both Phoenix and with Columbus last year. He’s played well in the little time he’s had with the Hawks.

He’s not a liability and 15 minutes per night isn’t asking for much. It’s pretty average stuff.

by aeroplane on Jan 30, 2012 8:33 PM CST up reply actions

if that is the case, then i don't know, his lack of focus can just as much just be a product not playing

and seeing no light at the end of that tunnel, then the reverse. he comes, practices, does his best, and then what else does he have to do to pass the time, you know? Q’s commented on Lepisto in the past and said he has had a good attitude and works hard in practice, and given he’s said in the past about players needing to do better, I don’t see why he wouldn’t here.

BTW

I think the league should absolutely be embracing our own lovable humpty hump. Is there a more genuine player in sports anywhere? I mean, that shit the mic caught at the All Star Draft was exactly how all these guys talk. And while Kaner tried to play it off, he knew that we knew the excuse was BS. The dude is pure entertainment, has only one bad decision on the record (and he was freakin’ 19, for jeebus’ sake), and we get to watch him night in and night out.

Are Hal Gill and Bryan Allen really that much different?

Gill – 6’7" 241lbs, not a very good skater, PK specialist ($2.25 mill UFA)

Allen – 6’5" 226lbs, not a very good skater, PK specialist ($2.9 mill UFA)

Both have 7 points, both are minus players on poor teams, both spend a large chunk of time on the PK (Gill @ 3:53/game and Allen @ 2:34/game). They both have negative giveaway/takeaway numbers (Allen’s are a bit better), they are virtually tied in blocked shots (109 Gill vs. 110 Allen), while Allen leads Gill in the hit department 66 to 38. Other than being 5 years older, I don’t see Gill being discernibly worse than Allen in any way. In fact, factoring in playoff experience, Gill has a big upside going to the Cup twice with the Pens and the conference finals with the Habs while Allen has virtually zero playoff exposure (10 games with the Canucks).

by ChicagoNativeSon on Jan 30, 2012 8:13 PM CST up reply actions

Well, to start with I believe he's on the rack with groin or abdominal surgery.

So he wouldn’t really help in the near future. He is an RFA but will be coming off of a $5.25/year salary. My guess is that the lure of 30 goals and 75 points (his pinnacle offensive output) would keep his salary somewhere around what he’s currently getting. I’m not sure there would be a ton of appetite for that kind of cap hit on the Hawks current roster. His defensive acumen is also… well, let’s just say he wanders out there a lot. When pressed by Boudreau to turn himself into more of a defensively sound player he struggled with his game a fair bit and, in turn, lost a fair bit of his offensive upside. With Leddy’s progression in the puck-mover/offensive department, I’m not sure there would be a lot of hunger for a relatively one-dimensional player on the back end. I think it would take a lot to get him and the positives his game brings would not benefit the Hawks enough to make the move. I’d have to say NO (IMO).

Great skater though… and can throw a hell of a keep-the-forwards-honest check now and then too. Cannon shot as well.

if we could get a star Dman back, you’d certainly do it… but I’m not sure that deal is out there… and we need a Hjalmarsson like dman anyway to begin with, trading him doesn’t make much sense, even with his cap hit.

if we could get a star Dman back, you’d certainly do it

My initial knee-jerk reaction was “no” but in reality this is very true from a GM perspective, especially long term.

By trading Hjammer and a prospect for a true #3 defenseman it accomplishes multiple things:

  • It opens up the market a METRIC TONNE. Because instead of only targeting UFA rentals, Stan could pick up a defender with years remaining on his contract.
  • Instead of dropping Hjammer to the 3rd line to pair with Monty, and bringing in a new guy to skate with Leddy, just swap out Hjammer for the new guy. Monty/OD is still a pretty damn good 3rd pair, but the Hawks would have plenty of cap room to bring in a #6 d-man to get Leddy off the PK (whoever they traded Hjammer for would obviously have to be a PKer too).
  • If the Hawks simply bring in a rental, the pairing problems remain next season (unless with another year under their belts, 4-8 grow into their roles). Without a major trade or signing during the summer, a true #3 defenseman will not be possible. Unless Leddy or Monty is going to switch sides, they’re not going to be paired together. Therefore it’s either 4-8 again next season or Monty-Hjammer would be your 2nd or 3rd pairing. As a 2nd pairing, they don’t make sense. As a 3rd pairing, they’d cost $6.25M. Not gonna happen.
  • Olsen will possibly be skating on the 3rd line next season. He plays on the right side and would pair nicely with Monty (combined cap hit of about $3.6M). Leddy will still be at $1.1M next season, so there would be plenty of cap space for a partner in the $4.5M range.

If Stan is focusing only on “going for it this season” then I’d personally prefer to keep Hjammer and bring in whomever they can (but the pickings seem admittedly slim). But as a move that solves both short-term and long term issues, this could actually make sense and bring cap balance. I wouldn’t put a trade like this past Bowman.

SCH, a softer, kinder place to comment on violent sports.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Jan 30, 2012 10:14 PM CST up reply actions

You need two to tango

Who trades a “better” version of Hjammer for, you know, Hjammer?

Q seems to want more defensive defenseman for their third pairs. I think Monty has surprised them for being more of an offensive defenseman. He played on the PK in the past and NOT the PP. However, it is the opposite on the Hawks.

So, I could see Monty getting traded before Hjammer. If that happened, at least Lepisto might actually play. I just don’t think they like the Monty/Lepisto pair.

Most likely though, you are looking at a 1.7-2.3M 6th defenseman that can play on the Penalty Kill.

by DaleHalas on Jan 30, 2012 10:40 PM CST up reply actions

I know their games aren't exactly the same

but Leddy = better offensive defenseman than Barker, amirite?

by VerStig on Jan 30, 2012 10:47 PM CST up reply actions

better defender too

Due to Leddy’s size he’ll always be lacking in some areas (insert “Soupy’s Johnsson” joke here), but his stick checking is right up there with Keith’s. Mostly because it has to be. A 170lb 20 year old defenseman doesn’t play in the NHL unless he can use his stick (and speed) effectively.

SCH, a softer, kinder place to comment on violent sports.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Jan 30, 2012 10:51 PM CST up reply actions

Huh?

GM’s trade current players for future prospects all the time.

Trading an existing NHL player for a “worse” player with almost the exact same skill set? Not unless the money is different, which in this case it most likely wouldn’t be..

by DaleHalas on Jan 30, 2012 11:04 PM CST up reply actions

Hjammer's still young

and if you went solely off of his stats like blocked shots, GA/60, etc, he looks good. Unfortunately, he has been soft in the crease and the turnovers are picking up again. Throw in a prospect and there’d be some interest.

SCH, a softer, kinder place to comment on violent sports.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Jan 30, 2012 10:47 PM CST up reply actions

Do the Hawks have THAT KIND OF prospect?

That a team would take Hjammer’s salary and give you a better player than him in return? 3.5M is #3 money already.

by DaleHalas on Jan 30, 2012 11:14 PM CST up reply actions

Hey, if you're the Islanders

$550k is #1 money! (MacDonald).

I’m not trying to throw Hjammer under the bus. I still think he’s a good d-man and I assume many GMs feel the same way. And I don’t think they need a defender who’s THAT much better than Hjammer, just one who pairs better with Leddy. And a GM on a rebuilding team will trade a 31-35 yr old for a young upcomer like Hjammer.

The other option is going the UFA rental route. That list isn’t too long when you start limiting it by the probable/necessary criteria (struggling team that’s selling, UFA, PKer, 2nd liner, left-handed, etc). And you still need to throw in a prospect and/or player.

Just something to consider…

SCH, a softer, kinder place to comment on violent sports.

but I think trying to acquire a true #3 D-Man is a really tough prospect for a number of reasons. If we’re going off of the basis that Keith is our #1 and that Seabs is our #2 with; the typical number one being a guy that plays in all situations, logs upwards of 25 mins/game, and is your greatest puck mover/PP QB/point producer) and with your number two providing basically the same services albeit more in the mold of a shutdown player – then what is it that the #3 moniker really implies? Obviously there are some 1 and 1a cases out there (Doughty/Johnson, Weber/Suter etc.) where the two players are virtually interchangeable (for the record I think Doughty is far superior to Johnson but I digress…).

For me a number 3 is more in the mold of the typically #1 d-man. That is, a player for all situations (perhaps trimmed PK time) with slightly reduced minutes and someone who doesn’t really struggle with those minutes. In many cases, the number 3 would be a guy being groomed to be a #1 in the future. A Number 4 is, again, more in the shutdown role, probably sees limited PP time and is really the poor-man’s number two d-man. I think acquiring a number 3 almost has to happen by accident because, if by design you acquire that player, you’re almost certainly paying the moon for the potential upside of that player becoming a number 1 or 1a OR you’re taking on a massive salary for an ageing number 1 (on a bad team) to plug into your #3 role. In the case of the upside potential acquisition, these players are either currently occupying a number one role on a non-playoff team, or are played in guarded situations where it’s hard to evaluate their minutes and their total potential (in the list below I’ve looked at non-playoff teams or Eastern Conference teams for obvious reasons).

So where does that leave us? Well, in the Hawks case I’d breakdown our top for as this (I’m sure everyone would): 1 – Keith, 2 – Seabrook, 3 – Leddy, 4 – Hjalmarsson. There are many players out there that perform virtually identically to Hjammer at around the same cap hit (Smid, Coburn) with most of them his age (or older) with some of them at a higher hit while producing less (Regehr, Lydman off the top of my head).

That leaves acquiring players in that fit into a couple of categories IMO:

Younger with Potential
Luca Sbisa – ANH – appears to be more of a puck mover but is playing fewer ES minutes with a marginal amount of PP time (basically 1 shift/game).
Kyle Quincy -COL – logs 2.5 on the PP & PK basically a #1 on a young team.
Erik Johnson – COL – same minutes as Quincy and the 1a or #2 for them. Both young so I don’t see them moving.
PK Subban – MON – Over 3 mins of PP time and 2.5 of PK, would cost a lot IMO.
Dmitri Kulikov – FLA – mostly PP special teams, not a ton of PK replacement value, but Uncle Dale will probably hand him over for nothing.
Top 4 Borg – NYR – unique situation where Tort’s is basically blasting Del Zotto, McDonagh, Girardi and Staal (when healthy) with 24+ minutes per game each, all with remarkably similar numbers.
Matt Carle – PHI – like many of these players, more special teams emphasis on PP over PK although he does both.
Oliver Ekman-Larsson – PHX – looks promising but we all know how misleading minutes can be with a Dave Tippet coached team (jokingly referring to Lepisto being good enough for 18/game over there).
Matt Niskanen – PIT – under 19 minutes per game probably isn’t full value replacement for move Hjammer, but he does seem to have some puck moving advantages.
John Carlson – WAS – pretty big upside but with Mike Green on the self perpetuating injury cycle I don’t see why he’d ever be moved.
Zack Bogosian – WIN – expected to do much of what Doughty does for LA. Shows signs from time to time, logs a lot of special teams minutes for the Jets.

OR

Older Players that are Number One’sthat you’d have to take a hefty cap hit for
Joni Pitkanen - CAR – hurt anyways
Stephane Robidas - DAL – offensive numbers are down this season.
Trevor Daley – DAL – not old but a known commodity who’s game probably won’t develop much more.
Tom Gilbert – EDM – hurt, but much like Daley IMO
Jordan Leopold – BUF – kind of fits, but not worth taking on IMO
Mark Giordano – CAL – Hurt much of season but his play has basically made Bouwmeester’s contract look even worse.
Mark Streit – NYI – pretty much a PP specialist and he’s minus 21 (I don’t care how fallable that stat is, that’s piss poor).
Andrej Meszaros – PHI – Really, he’s an older Hjammer that has found his offensive niche in this league.
Dustin Byfuglien – WIN – I almost typed Bustin Byfuglien, we all know what he’s about @ $5.2 for 4 years after this one.

So, to compress all of that into a simple conclusion. I don’t really think there’s a market for acquiring a #3 out there. Arguments could be made for any of these guys, but if we’re in agreement that Leddy is already in the role of #3 with an eye for #1 as his experience grows, then I think keeping Hjammer at #4 is the way to go (some soft crease defending included). If that means they need to roll out that 2-8 pairing more often, so be it.

This conversation would require a few beers

I’m in agreement on pretty much all of this, including your rankings of the Hawks d-men. I kind of gave up trying to claim Leddy is the #3 defenseman because most people seem to expect him to be knocked down to #6. Just choosing my battles.

And no way I’m bringing up the 2-8 pairing again! (although I’m slowly trying to work the conversation in that direction – don’t tell anyone)

But for me, the bottom line is something needs to change. Simply bringing in an upgrade to OD might not solve the current problems. It only does if Q is willing to give Leddy-Hjammer the protection of the offensive zone starts that Soupy-Hjammer got in the past (and if 4-8 can in turn generate offense). Continuing to place them in d-zone situations isn’t going to work, especially in the playoffs.

So either Q is going to start trusting the 3rd line to take on some of the tougher assignments, or the pairings need to change.

I’d like to see the Hawks bring in a #3 guy to skate with Hjammer, but I just cant see Q pairing Leddy with Monty on the 3rd line. Stan’s definitely got his work cut out for him. There are a number of different ways to solve the puzzle.

And if Stan can find a guy to pair with Leddy on the 2nd line and Hjammer-Monty become the 3rd line, look out league. This team is gonna look very different inside the blue line.

Beer sorts out most things!

As I mentioned above (line 1 in my gargantuan post), I believe I understand entirely where you’re coming from. I’m not sure what Stan would have to scrape together in order to get one of those number 3’s although I would like to add one if it didn’t come at the expense of Hjammer (or any of our current top 4). More than likely, as DaleHalas noted, it’s bringing in a 5th or 6th type of guy which (IMO) just adds another spare part back there. Depth is always good to have but I don’t think it would drastically change the current make-up. If a 5 or 6 man comes in, more than likely he gives you what O’Donnell already does (PK wise) with maybe a little more consistency at ES. At PK time…? I would like to see Seabs/Hjammer and then Keith/O’Donnell but I know Q doesn’t like playing guys on their off-side which would have to happen in order for the latter PK pairing to materialise.

At even strength, altering the existing pairings (bring back 2-8) or passing along more offensive zone starts to (4-8) clearly creates a bad taste for Q. I would prefer to see sheltered minutes for 4-8 (70-30 in favour of O-zone if it could be swung) against teams who play with a dominant top line. Against teams more apt to roll their top 3 lines I think splitting the pairings into 2-8, 4-7 would be beneficial (or at least use that approach when the oppositions line juggling/distribution dictates). To a degree, both options provide a solution although it does dilute any pairing consistency to a degree.

To that end, I would also like to see a more concerted effort to pair the d-men with forward lines that help. More 4-8 O-zone starts with 88-19-25 for example.

And your last point I couldn’t agree more with. If Stanley were able to pick up any of the guys on my “list” and make Monty-Hjammer the #3 pairing there will be a lot of teams getting seriously fucked up when the Hawks come calling.

You are next.

by M7 on Jan 31, 2012 2:18 PM CST up reply actions

There seems to be three choices.

Find somebody better than Hjammer. Find somebody worse. Or find similar to Hjammer. Seems like the Hawks want a second d-pair guy who can play on the third. So more similar to Hjammer than potentially better or worse.

To me the big issue is Monty. He didn’t come in and take Leddy’s PK time. Q doesn’t seem to want to play Leddy and Monty together. And Q doesn’t seem to want to play Monty and Lepisto together. So what exactly does Monty give you?

by DaleHalas on Jan 31, 2012 3:27 PM CST up reply actions

Net presence on PP Unit #2...?

I agree that he’s not fulfilling the role the team needs. Either that, or Q doesn’t trust him enough to give him the minutes and situations that we (and possibly Bowman) were hoping he could fill, thereby finding his rhythm and consistency out there.

Interesting admission from BMo

He said he came back from the ACL too early. Shouldn’t have started the season with the team. His injury was only slightly later than Olesz’ ACL injury. Wonder if Olesz has any regrets when he came back from his injury?

I’m just thinking it would be pretty funny if the Hawks ended up with Kruger and Olesz on the third line.

The marker was Olesz’s 10th of the season, and the winger now has eight points (3g-5a) in his last six games.

by ccm on Jan 31, 2012 5:23 AM CST up reply actions

I don't see anyone trading for Olesz

And I actually think he could pass through re-entry waivers if the Hawks really wanted to try. Olesz at half price would of had value in the league. If he hadn’t shown so badly coming off that injury.

by DaleHalas on Jan 31, 2012 9:11 AM CST up reply actions

And if they don't feel he has a future with the Hawks

losing him through waivers is probably cheaper than a buyout, so not much risk there.

so here we go with the “he’s the bestest evah in the regular season” and blah, blah blah. I’m sorry but great goaltenders do not suffer the kind of epic meltdowns he did against BOS last year – yes, he played awesomely in their wins, but good lord he sucked donkeys/llamas/whales in the losses. The great ones keep their teams in the games where they could be blowouts, and he didn’t do it…not once.

For the amount of money you are paying him, however, the meltdowns and playoff disappointments are certainly magnified. If you were paying him 3.4 million a year, I think the majority of the criticism would fall to the wayside.
