Well, it's time for me to move on, ladies and gents.

Using a stale piece of hardtack (my sole means of sustenance and remuneration), I have tunneled out of my cave, pausing only to thank you, kind readers, for your general indifference to my links posts and 'shops and vigilant attention to my typos.

I keed. We want you on that wall. We need you on that wall.

Seriously, it's been a blast. A deep bow to the ToS, my co-linker Julia (and the links person who will take my place--enjoy the summer doldrums, sucka!), CNS for the pointers, and all the regular posters here who provide daily doses of wit, insight, and creativity. I've become addicted to it, so I'll be lurking.

I just dont think we have played them enough

While the Boston-Vancouver can pick up steam, i’m more worried about our division Rivals. I think the Blues w/ having a good team are always higher on my list than Vancouver. However this is still a heated one, just 2 teams who haven’t seen each other in a while

Why Q, why?!

also even with a crappy team

Just from years of playing them, I can’t help but hate the fucking blues and that fucking team. It just makes it a little more entertaining when both teams are playing well

I tend to agree

My hate level has subsided but who knows maybe with an actually close game or another playoff matchup should bring it out again. Right now it’s always SCUM on top, then St. Louis, then Vancouver

Guess Parise will be fair game during the summer
Sources say inquiring general managers are getting the word Devils GM Lou Lamoriello is not dealing unrestricted free agent-to-be Zach Parise before the NHL’s Feb. 27 trade deadline.

Instead, it is thought if the Devils do not want to re-sign Parise in June, they’ll trade his rights to a team that wants an advance shot at negotiations before he becomes free July 1.

DGB ASG History

I have to say, I enjoy this format so much more than prior editions of the ASG where they treid to make it seem like a real game. Now everyone plays it like it’s a pickup game at the park and I don’t mind it one bit. From the draft through the skills stuff to the main event, it’s a fun weekend for both the fans and (seemingly) the players.

Thank you, sir! May I have another?

by Badgerdano on Jan 31, 2012 10:12 AM CST reply actions

I like the draft

gives more opportunity for the player’s personalities to show, which is the more interesting part of the ASG.

by oregon_hawk on Jan 31, 2012 10:23 AM CST up reply actions

Agreed

It looked and felt like a pick-up game. I loved Gabrick shooting his own goalie after he opened the scoring. And then Henrik yelling at Hossa about not shooting. Suck it, Phaneuf! Carey Price is probably my favorite NHL personality. Stamkos said he has yet to play in an actual shoot out this year, and I’m thinking Guy should be fired immediately.

Anyway, I loved the whole thing. It was great to watch.

Hal Gill

I don’t care for Hal Gill as much as the next fella, but someone did bring some interesting points to my attention today. Yes, we have a surplus of what appears to be 3rd pairing defencemen. What those 3rd pairing quality defencement don’t have going for them is playing for a team that has been extremely proficient in SA/60.

During Gill’s time in MTL, he’s averaged the most PK ice time and they’ve been 10th (2009-10), 5th (2010-11), 1st (2011-12) in 4v5 SA/60.

The Hawks finished bottom 10 last year and are currently giving up the most 4v5 SA/60 in the league. He’d be a solid add to an area of weakness.

Now first… yes, Carey Price is helping that PK unit because he backstops it. Perhaps not in SA/60 but he does help it. That said, Gill has been the guy on the ice the most for the Habs and that unit doesn’t allow a ton of shots. Seeing as we’re not exactly thrilled with the current state of our goaltending (no, I’m not calling for the guillotine or Frenchie to come back from exile… relax), the less shots our netminder sees on the PK, the better.

Listen… our options for acquiring defence are thin. Prime targets have signed extensions. Joni Pitkanen makes too much money in 2012-13 and 2013-14. There’s not a lot out there. If this is our best option and it addresses an area of weakness, then we have to swallow a bitter pill that will eventually make us feel better. Especially if it only costs a 3rd round pick.

by JesusMarianHossa on Jan 31, 2012 10:34 AM CST reply actions

I like leddy

but getting him off the PK can’t hurt.

by oregon_hawk on Jan 31, 2012 10:37 AM CST up reply actions

Don't think I shared this here last week but it was a good read

Read it twice. In order to understand it even somewhat coherently it took two runs for me. Goalie evaluation on ESSV% and the thought of adding PK% to the equation. The data goes back to 1998-99 so some of it obviously has pre-lockout skews. I e-mailed the guy to see if he would distill it down to pre and post lockout. No reply yet though.

by DaleHalas on Jan 31, 2012 2:44 PM CST up reply actions

I have to admit I do not understand this “wake up call” business. I thought Frolik had been working hard, but wasn’t able to produce. What is sitting him possibly going to do to rectify that? Its not suddenly going to grant him magic hands that will suddenly get all the goals. Its one thing if he had been being lazy (legit lazy I mean, not kaner lazy) on the ice or in practice, then yeah sitting him would be a wake up call to have better work ethic, but otherwise? what does it really do? And I mean that for any/all players.

If you have 23 you have to play 23.

So somebody has to sit. And it really can’t be the same guy everytime. Just like baseball, you have to give the guy a couple of at-bats, or they turn into Lepisto. So, you rotate through the guys who are struggling. Don’t think it is a “wake up call” as much as a “your it” kind of thing.

by DaleHalas on Jan 31, 2012 2:55 PM CST up reply actions

It was also a quote from Frolik himself

so it wasn’t the beats really saying it. I just hope that the guy can produce a little more, isn’t that “one” of the reasons they signed him. I love him defensively but he does have to produce a few more goals. While not playing and only on the 4th gives him so much ice time.

Kuc said the bone can be removed

And it’s not crucial to movement so at least that means he didn’t break the same bone that Kane did?

by amadeus on Jan 31, 2012 3:26 PM CST up reply actions

If the bone can be removed...

… Sharp is probably dealing with a hook-of-the-hamate injury. This is purely informed speculation (and I’m no ortho surgeon), but the injury may have been there for a while as a nagging pain (unknown to Sharp, and not readily visible on imaging). Two operative procedures are usually looked at. Open reduction internal fixation (ORIF – pin it and cast it) or excision (removed the broken “hook” of the bone). Reason for excision is that it often doesn’t heal due to poor blood flow to the distal (hook) portion of the bone. Apparently reduced grip strength can be an issue although that’s debatable. I played ball with a guy who had this done and, after rehab, he didn’t experience any reduced grip strength but his hand did fatigue a little faster. FYI -this is a common injury with MLB players, usually the lower hand on the bat (Jeff Bagwell immediately comes to mind).

Kane did the scapphoid which resides in the wrist at the base of the thumb. This break (again, speculation) is at the ulnar base of the palm. As far as I know, if you can deal with the pain, and some resulting numbness due to the ulnar nerve that runs through, you can get around this.

You are next.

by M7 on Jan 31, 2012 3:50 PM CST up reply actions

i liked how they asked kane in the media during the ASGs of what his teammates said

and he said he already got texts about how he needs to quit with the superman business or something along those lines.

But yeah, that’s what is surprising me also, that they just stated it in the media for anyone to read.

"Orange Mocha Frappuccino!"

by justforkicks on Jan 31, 2012 3:27 PM CST up reply actions

Exactly

Four months until playoffs even start when injury is sustained. Depending on what bone it is, recovery time is anywhere between 6 weeks and 6 months. This doesn’t sound like a Capitate, Radius or Ulna injury though. Gotta assume it’s on the short end because he wouldn’t be able to play tonight if it wasn’t.

If it’s like what Kane had (scaphoid), he can play but not comfortably until surgery fixes it. Also risk having further damage sustained or getting an avulsion fracture. The latter has us dealing with ligaments and tendons.

Really wishing he would have just gotten it fixed. Assuming everything went to procedure, this was likely a decision made by the player, not the medical staff. They laid out his options and he chose rehab and play through.

That’s mostly speculation up there on the last part, but the wrist stuff is what I dealt with as a kid. The way they painted avulsion fracture to me was not pretty. Bone ripping part of my tendon off the mass sounded like the last thing I wanted to experience.

by Chels Dag on Jan 31, 2012 3:42 PM CST up reply actions

i mean obviously the reason teams don't advertise injuries is because shit like this does in fact happen

which is why i’m surprised there is an article about sharp’s injury. And yeah players will take advantage of situations they know about

But having that as the key to the game? You’ve gotta be kidding me.

Suffice to say I will rage if the following happens:
1) Toews and Sharp are specifically targetted. There’s playing hard and there’s being jackasses, and I hope the Canucks can say on the right side of that.
2) Chippy play turns dirty. I’ve noticed that when things don’t go a certain way, things start getting brutal on the ice for our guys. Again, you can play hard and clean, or play like jackasses and dirty as fuck, and I really hope we can keep it clean tonight
3) If there is diving. Admittedly I will LOL like a maniac if Kaner gets another roughing penalty, but lets play the game like it should be played tonight.

That's called real NHL hockey boys and girls

Hockey boiled down to militaristic tones…attack the opponent where he is vulnerable. I can hardly blame the Canucks for coming out HARD tonight. They’ll be laying the body for sure. It’s up to the Hawks to respond….not by mixing it up and heading to the penalty box, but rather by exploiting open ice that will surely be created in the middle. This is a game where Kane needs to be the biggest exploiter center ice.

It happens though

I wouldn’t necessarily say that teams try to break a guys wrist or ankle (Bobby Clarke may disagree with me), but if teams know a guy is coming off of a shoulder injury – they’ll put him into the fence at every opportunity. In that sense they’re trying to hurt the guy, not injure him. Hurt a guy enough out there and eventually his mind makes his legs start losing races to pucks etc. It’s effective…

It happens

but it’s still despicable (unless Bolland does it!!!! (but seriously, it is)). As to its effectiveness, these are probably some of the most pain-resistant guys around, and also some of the strongest. If we’re talking about high school, sure yeah go hard on a guy’s shoulder and he’ll shy away from contact a little. But we’re talking a gigantic dude like Bieksa taking a whack with a 6-foot weapon at triple crown winner Jonathan mother effin’ Toews’ hands. One, it’s not gonna stop him from doing any of the things he does unless two, the slash manages to break something that was weakened/recovering. Which it might.

Also.. the fact that it happens is one thing, the fact that a media outlet (well, a blog…) is explicitly calling for it as a strategy is something additional and pretty repulsive.

Also.. the fact that it happens is one thing, the fact that a media outlet (well, a blog…) is explicitly calling for it as a strategy is something additional and pretty repulsive.Maybe it’s just the karate-kid indoctrination I received as a child, but that’s all I can see when I hear to “target” a body part. “TAKE HIM OUT.” Ultimately foolish, though, as Toews knows the crane-shot…

All your street cred is gone due to the repetitive post!

(kidding)

I know what you’re saying, and I’m no advocate of a man wielding a 6 foot weapon to break something. Nor am I a fan of a blog effectively putting a Reggie Dunlop bounty on someone, but it is a very real part of the game and a strategy. Guys will get the stick in there so the guy with the injury won’t play with his mind at ease.

It’s the same as players burning a few wasters up around the goalie’s ears. It happens, the intent is to unnerve and unsettled your opponent. Looking for any little edge. Maybe trying to draw Toews (in this case) into taking a swing at you with his bad hand etc.

If you are not 100% confident in your body part after an injury, that’s what makes taking the ice at game speed hard. Some guys are very good at turning their pain off and removing indecision from their game, some aren’t.

Honest answer. This team has brutal schedule the rest of the way out and absolutely most improve on the PP, blueline work and defensive contribution by the wings. And Crawford needs to step up.

I still say this team has an unhappy playoff ending unless Stanley acquires a true quality d-man. Hjalmarsson and Leddy cannot co-exist as same pairing come playoffs. And the need is screaming loud for upgrade over Montador. No, the answer is NOT to split Keith and Seabs.

Expect the Canucks to come out bangin.’ Hence why I suppose Q decided to dress the useless Bickell.

Without question

He’s a minute muncher. I think we agree on the critical points though:

-When at full health and back in game shape he will log big minutes 20+
-He’s a core part of their future
-Acquiring him (if the Rangers were willing to move him) would still pose a risk for his new team in the immediate future.

by BigHoss on Jan 31, 2012 4:18 PM CST up reply actions

Well... almost anyone in the league is available

if you want to pay the right price (or their teams price that is). Ideally acquiring someone that would pair with Leddy on the second pair (and can log 2+ minutes of PK time/game) bumping Hjammer down with Montador on the third pair. That should allow the defence core to be pretty iron-clad. IMO, adding another 5th or 6th defenseman to the current roster is little more than shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic (ok, bad analogy – it’s not like the Hawks are a sinking ship). Although my guess is that the addition of a 5th or 6th man will be precisely what happens (if anything at all).

Limit the hard checking that Vancouver will have as its game plan tonight.
