Odd...
The thing that bothered me most about carcillo’s hit was, as I told friends, that type of hit could result in paralysis. Then the tragic stroy on the high school player comers out. You can blame Hemsky for pulling up short and not saving the icing call – but there’s a lot of headhunters in this league who think they are making a hockey play when they put a perilous hit on a defenseless opponent.
I just read through over 500 comments
So thankfully there is a new thread to comment on. Ahh Morning links, then I guess it’s time to work.

Regarding yesterday's discussion about concussions...
I’m a student in sports medicine and I work part time in athletic training and concussions are so unpredictable and currently an unknown. There are protocols that are followed: you have to be symptom free, then take an impact test, then you can do light practice, etc. You guys probably know the drill by now. Kruger being back means that he passed all of those tests, and he’s now in the next step: playing a game. When he gets hit in the game, he doesn’t need to go out unless he’s got symptoms. It’s looked at like he’s concussion free. He has to be concussion free to play. But, doctors and trainers don’t know how his brain will react. The athlete might lie or symptoms might be delayed and it’s all just an unknown.
I will say, knowing Dr. Terry, that these players aren’t going in early. Because concussions are unpredictable, they have extra precautions. They can only do things with the limited information they have. What might seem like common sense – take Kruger out after getting hit – might actually not be because they’ve seen him progress to the point where he’s fine after contact, etc.
Also, when you say that the player “obviously” looks out of it post-concussion…it’s not necessarily concussion symptoms causing that. Just getting back into a game after being out and being treated with kid gloves can make people look “out of it.” Also, they’re usually more nervous about getting hit.

Correct if I'm wrong but Dr. Terry is an employee of the Blackhawks correct?
Just saying.
The whole “doctors and trainers don’t know how his brain will react” reeks of passing the buck and trying to deny any responsibility.
And I’d also add just because there’s a lack of information out there regarding concussions doesn’t mean that others with a medical background agree with how Kruger was handled.

While it might smell that way to you
The brain is a pretty complex and still very misunderstood part of the human body. There’s a reason things such as depression and the like can go undetected for so long, so much of that field of medicine is very much based on how the person is feeling and there aren’t very good baselines for you should have x of this and y of that and be able to do this and that.

Player coming off a concussion in his first game back gets hit in the head, not once, not twice, but three times. I don’t care how little information is out there, it’s probably not a good idea for that player to finish the game.

This is why concussions shouldn't be diagnosed by the player or the team doctor

My first dozen (or so) concussions were quick returns with NO lingering symptoms
and I played all out hard/chippy as soon as I hit the ice again.
Somewhere after that first dozen (or so) the near instant return stuff ended big time.
But the truth is that one can have a pretty serious knock to the head giving a concussion and be basically back to baseline fast, get hit hard right away, and have no ill effects…or have immediate serious efect from an innocuous bump.

Right you are, because of all the unknowns, there will be disagreement because anecdotal experience is mixed in with whatever science there is...
…but I still will take the opinion of a medical professional over a layperson 100/ 100 times, and I haven’t seen a single medical professional weigh in that Kruger was mishandled

but if the Blackhawks were the Bears, I promise you there’d be doctors coming out of the woodwork to tell us what they would have done differently.

Not sure that's the case in today's publicized environment re concussions,
especially after the NYT series.

LET’S GO HAWKS!!!!!
He's on the Hawks payroll, sure, but he's also a doctor
who wouldn’t have gone to all the time and effort to become a Dr if he didn’t want to help his patients. And then there’s this:
I swear to fulfill, to the best of my ability and judgment, this covenant:
I will respect the hard-won scientific gains of those physicians in whose steps I walk, and gladly share such knowledge as is mine with those who are to follow.
I will apply, for the benefit of the sick, all measures [that] are required, avoiding those twin traps of overtreatment and therapeutic nihilism.
I will remember that there is art to medicine as well as science, and that warmth, sympathy, and understanding may outweigh the surgeon’s knife or the chemist’s drug.
I will not be ashamed to say “I know not”, nor will I fail to call in my colleagues when the skills of another are needed for a patient’s recovery.
I will respect the privacy of my patients, for their problems are not disclosed to me that the world may know. Most especially must I tread with care in matters of life and death. If it is given to me to save a life, all thanks. But it may also be within my power to take a life; this awesome responsibility must be faced with great humbleness and awareness of my own frailty. Above all, I must not play at God.
I will remember that I do not treat a fever chart, a cancerous growth, but a sick human being, whose illness may affect the person’s family and economic stability. My responsibility includes these related problems, if I am to care adequately for the sick.
I will prevent disease whenever I can, for prevention is preferable to cure.
I will remember that I remain a member of society with special obligations to all my fellow human beings, those sound of mind and body as well as the infirm.
If I do not violate this oath, may I enjoy life and art, respected while I live and remembered with affection thereafter. May I always act so as to preserve the finest traditions of my calling and may I long experience the joy of healing those who seek my help.
Scoff if you want, but I’ve found that most professionals take this stuff pretty seriously.

My point was
that you shouldn’t assume the doctor is a stooge just because he’s paid by the Hawks. As far as I’m aware, there’s not a shred of evidence to suggest Dr. Terry is mis-handling his patients, other than 3rd hand hearsay grumbling from lay people.
Also, the Hawks have an economic interest in protecting their investments, which would argue for them being overly conservative, and not the other way ’round. On the other hand, Michael Jackson was batshit crazy.
An opinion should be the result of thought, not a substitute for it. (Jef Mallett)
I tend to agree,
BUT for years the NFL had some lackey as their medical spokesperson who batted aside all concussion concerns with an emphatic “the research is inconclusive.”
Guy should be in fucking jail.

You spelled referees wrong
despite a furious comeback attempt by Canada, Russia will be joining them there.
What a joke the entire second half of that game was. The calls were so one sided. Ray Ferraro and Gord Miller decided that Connolly punching another player IN THE THROAT didn’t deserve a mention. Nah, let’s focus on what we can pick on about the Russians.
I’m glad Canada lost.

The refs just sucked period.
I think they were equally bad both sides, even in the second half. I mean the elbow, Wedgewood being run over, etc…no side were angels

International Refs
do not know what to do when there is an abundance of physical play. They do not set a tone for the game like NHL refs. One minute they call everything , the next they call nothing. Now that’s consistency.
Lead writer of nothing, commenter on everything.
Yeah that was definitely clear at the game

I’m not going to get into this because my obvious bias pretty much discounts anything I can say, but my own feeling on that play was that it didn’t get blown because the Russian tried to sell it. I also think Jenner’s misconduct for that mild spear was a result of his having tried to sell the extent of his own “injury”. Also, like westy says, international refs tend to call these games erratically … it’s hard to be consistent in calling a physical game when you’re not used to it.
And as justforkicks mentions, the calls were erratic for both sides. The PPs were pretty even by game’s end, both the shitty and the deserved ones.

One hopeful outcome of the Kane scoring slump
Is that he should be due for a big streak sometime soon.
His demotion should fire him up for tomorrow night, no better time to get hot!

the whole demotion thing
hopefully it gets him going, though i think the 2nd PP unit is really random, and the changes would be better served with Hossa on the 2nd and Brunette on the first screening the net. I want him to do better and score goals, but i think it’ll come, and i’d be more upset if he just wasn’t trying as hard as he is. So basically, I think things need to change, but not sure a “demotion” is the way to do it.

Dylan Olsen recalled.
I’m not going to lie, I look forward to watching him.
I do stuff for CheerTheAnthem
Really?
I’ll have to check Twitter, anything about Andrew Shaw? I saw somewhere that he might get a call up. Strange though with Olsen when you have “4 guys”. Even with Monty out, you have Lepisto Scott and OD. Shows me no faith in them and hope we can rid of them soon

#Blackhawks recall D Dylan Olsen, put Marcus Kruger and Steve Montador on IR and add Andrew Shaw to the active roster.
I don’t understand why we need another defensemen, but ok, I’ll take it – it’ll be good to watch. I’m hoping he goes with Lepisto, but with my luck it’ll be Scott.

I don't think that's correct
I may be wrong, in fact it’s not even remotely out of the question, but I’m fairly certain that Saad can recalled to the ‘Hawks any time the only concern there being whether or not they’re willing to let him eclipse the 9 game mark and start the clock ticking on the EL contract. My understanding is that because of the juniors league that he plays in (the OHL) his only 2 options are the NHL or juniors – the ‘Hawks don’t have the option of assigning him to the Ice Hogs, which would give them more control in how he’s developed, if they don’t want him on the NHL team.

Right but at the start of the season you have that option
so if the Hawks kept him up thats great and if he stayed passed the 9 games he is able to play up with the NHL. Once the team sends them down, I thought the contract with the OHL only allows him to be called up by the AHL and since he isn’t of age there he can’t be called up?? Not sure completely but thats what I thought
Why Q, why?!

my guess is that if Olsen suits up against Philly tomorrow he'll be paired with OD
simply because of the prevailing logic of pairing a young call-up with a veteran

For those of you that have not seen this fanpost
Paul the fossil found some good video of some 40 YO Hawks games. It’s good stuff, but what is most intriguing is the way the game was played. Tough and hard, but in control. Also note the shape of the players. Less V shaped because the pads were smaller and built more for protection than anything else. These are the pads we (at least us older gents) grew up wearing. You younger guys wore the body armor that my boys wear now.
And that Chico Maki guy had some hands no?
I still say Ken Dryden is a douche even after all these years.

Why is the Goalie so small?
Todays goalies look like they’re in riot gear and back then they looked like stick figures with shin pads.
This is great. Every time I watch games from the 70s I’m amazed, goalies most of all. I think the equipment change is underplayed in all of this.
I must say, though, my most recent goalie gear is late 90s vintage and I end up with a lot fewer shot bruises after games than I did with my 70s stuff.
