Cold Blows The Wind - Flyers 5, Hawks 4
Now that that's over with, at least we won't have to go through much more misty-eyed reminiscing of a Cup won two years ago when there's still quite a large task at hand of acquiring the one that's still up for grabs in six months. After going their first 15 games without a regulation loss when scoring first, the Hawks have now lost their last two. This tilt was predictably fast paced and high-scoring, with both teams trading periods of exerting themselves offensively while the respective defensive corps did their best Roger Dorn impersonations. In an ending reminiscent of the last time the Hawks were in Philly for a regular season game, a late penalty to Patrick Kane proved the death knell for the Hawks, as their passive and sloppy kill was torched by Claude Giroux who was given all the time in the world by all four Hawks to find Scott Hartnell, who relayed a pass from down low to a streaking JVR who didn't miss on the game winner. Flyers 5, Hawks 4.
Observations
- The early returns from Hawk nation are that of bellowing of no minors being called on the Flyers during the game. With the way the game was officiated, I'm not sure what they could have called that would have been within the context of the game they were allowing to happen. Though it is curious how Patrick Sharp wound up with four minutes for nary a scratch on Giroux, otherwise the zebras let the boys play.
- While the defensive zone coverage was for the most part abhorrent from the Hawks tonight, Ray Emery finally got exposed by a team that had the skill and patience to get him moving laterally. All 5 Flyer goals forced Razor to move post to post. And though Emery did make several solid stops, his rebound control left a lot to be desired.
- I'm sure the legends of Andrew Shaw and Jimmy Hayes are already being penned in leather bound, gilded page volumes as we speak. While both had nice games, and showed some hands both in close and in space, let's wait for a bigger sample size before everyone goes all Ben Smith on them. And I'm pretty sure there's still bone fragments from Shaw's skull getting kicked around the Wells Fargo ice.
- Nice of Pat and Eddie to finally tell us that Kimmo Timonen, the Flyers' best defensman with Pronger out, missed the last half of the first period and was only able to muster 3 short shifts at the start of the second with about 5 minutes left to go in that frame. I'm sure the shoutouts and waxing poetic about the Hawks training staff were more important, though.
- The Corsi numbers defy logic all over the place.
- Oh hey, Dave Bolland with an assist. So nice of him to make the trip.
- Something needs to be done with the defensive zone coverage. If the Hawks can't cut off the opposition's zone entry, they're getting repeatedly hemmed in and consequently clowned. The Hawk D men are going to need to a better job at closing in on puck carriers and angling them at the wall, rather than just flailing their sticks at them bent at the waist. Hawk wingers would be well served to stay interested in their checks crashing into the slot as well, rather than waiting for their chance to shotgun back up ice.
In a rare instance, Marian Hossa was particularly guilty of this on the Harry Zwasweriosasdoflkmnsadecyk goal, as he let him just waltz into the slot uncovered after Dylan Olsen had forced his man into a low percentage shot from the corner, and OD was in his rightful place occupying a man in front of Emery. - For as iffy as he's been all year, The Universe was so humahngusbig when it counted (timely humor!), even if he almost filled his diaper at the end.
- Patrick Sharp officially has his annual case of the post-Holiday yips. A prolonged homestand with a newborn during one of the Hawks' densest stretches of games probably isn't helping things in the rest department either. Even with that being the case, it might be time to get him back at the pivot, as Kane's line got dong whipped in their own end tonight on a fairly consistent basis.
- If nothing else, the Hawks will have very little time to dwell on that cock-punch of an ending, as the suddenly relevant Avalanche are back at the UC tomorrow, which will be just as fast paced an affair as tonight's was. And on the plus side, at least we won't have to look at Matt Duchene's face tomorrow.

And you’re right about the Smallies.. though none of them disgraced themselves and Shaw was close to a Gordie on Debut.. let’s see how they do. I like what i see thus far, that said..
"Kevin, You can't play Doom Metal while wearing a scarf"
heh
Let’s have the lyrics of “Mutilated Lips” on a GDT some day.. or maybe “Piss Up A Rope”
"Kevin, You can't play Doom Metal while wearing a scarf"
For me about the penalties
It’s not that I thought the Flyers did something that deserved a penalty; I just can’t believe that they wouldn’t do something that deserved a penalty in a game. I mean, it’s the Flyers.
Flyers called for two minute minor.. ref explains thus:
“You must have been up to something”
"Kevin, You can't play Doom Metal while wearing a scarf"

I have a FEVER and the only prescription is MOAR DAGGER!
The Enemy's Gate is Down
Carcillo accidently bumps into someone in the press box
2 minutes for roughing
There were definitely some obvious ones that should have been called
Shaw taking a high stick behind the Flyers net. Bicks getting hooked and hauled down in the ‘Hawks d-zone. On Sharp’s penalty his stick doesn’t come up if Giroux doesn’t trip him – still a penalty because you’re always responsible for your own stick (4 minutes was complete bullshit though) but there should have been a matching minor for Giroux there as well. Shitty officiating is not why the ‘Hawks lost, nor is it ever a valid excuse, but that doesn’t make it any less frustrating when zamboni calls are ignored

I think the officiating in general this year has been the worst that I can remember. There’s no real way to prove it of course but I’ve seen many games where I’ve felt the officials either had no control, or no idea what was going on or were choking the life out of it.

It's just seemed wildly inconsistent
Some games are called incredibly tight – you can’t look at a guy funny without getting a double minor. Some games the refs put the whistles away – they’ll let anything short of taking of a skate and trying to stab someone with it slide. It can get a little infuriating

I actually like how they called this. The penalties we got, minus the double for hs, were pretty obvious. They let almost everything else go. It was an open game so I didn’t get too ticked from missed instructions cause I liked the pace.

I was fine with the officiating. Let 'em play
But the 4 min penalty to Sharp was indeed bullshit. I watched the replay in slow-mo and Sharp’s stick taps Giroux on the side of the helmet. No way he cuts his lip unless he did it while diving to the ice in complete agony.
by ChicagoNativeSon on Jan 6, 2012 11:59 AM CST up reply actions
I was livid with Giroux.
I think he may have pulled the old “bite my lip ’till it bleeds” routine. Good for him if it worked, but if I was his coach and saw tape of that and it was indeed what he did – I would pull him aside with a brief lecture. I hate that embellishment shit.

by M7 on Jan 6, 2012 12:10 PM CST up reply actions
That was my first thought too, that he bit his own lip or something
(since I didn’t actually see blood anywhere). But the Flyers were up by 2 at that point. Would seem like a weird time to pull that crap.
Unless of course he keeps a packet of blood in the side of his mouth at all times.

Yeah, he appeared to be the NHL version of Rick Flair on that one.
I’m not sure how it warranted a double…

There is no question in my mind...
that Giroux trips Sharp with his foot, blatantly, just before Sharp was sent sprawling. A terrible nocall/call. keith was also tripped on the subsequent penalty kill. kane was clearly tripped either in the second or third.
the big problem though was a breakdown of coverage in front of our net. Players appeared to be mesmerized by the puck rather than picking up a man. Kane/Hossa?Stalberg were particularly inept.
it seems to me the Flyers defensive corp has some serious holes in it. not sure I agree entirely with Philly exposing Emery’s lateral movement – might have to look closer though – the rebounds just seemed to end up on the Flyers sticks with nary a Hawk in sight. The carom off the backboards was ridiculous – what are they made out of, rubber?
On the positive side, the Hawks generated numerous lethal chances of their own. It’s only one game, but Hayes and Shaw looked pretty damn comfortable out there. The Hawks best line by far was Hayes/Mayers/Frolik – Philly had no answer for them. Shaw may have been nicked up but the kid landed at least two solid haymakers – I think we have a cross between Burrish and Rypien on our hands. His toe drag on one play in the dlot and his grat move on his goal seem to indicate he has some skilld to go along with his pugnacity.
Epic losing effort by the Russian goalie.
But in the end, I think it's going to come back to the Globetrotters, because if there's one thing they know, it's "globe-trotting!"
I'd like to think
that seeing the Blues 1 point back, seeing Vancouver in front of us, and seeing SCUM possibly overtake us will motivate the guys.
I’d like to think that, but I am not sure it will.

I'm assuming Vancouver will lose against Boston
Because what in the actual fuck is Boston feeding their players? That ain’t no regular chicken parm. Also if Blackhawks South could do us a solid and beat them Monday that’d be awesome.
Detroit as a number of road games coming up, which, considering how well they’ve done away from their arena, is good news for us, however the Blues schedule could go either way.
It’s San Jose who could come up pretty quickly with so many games in hand. They have a lot of games scheduled before they play us next Sunday, but I’m expecting them to go .500.
I like the kids (all 3 of them)
Not ready to say that they should stay in the bigs for life just yet, but I see no reason for any of them to depart just yet either. I’d like to see Hayes get some shifts with Toews or Kane, not an entire game or even at the start, just sneak him in there a couple of times per game
Matt Douchebag isn't playing? Should be a win...should.
Who else watched the Kane cup winning goal on youtube right after the game ended?
i always laugh thinking about his comment about being drunk at ASG
"Well now you're just talking like Foghorn Leghorn!"
Dear Blackhawks
OK, Tomorrow is the start of a brand new winning streak. I am willing to put all of this not playing for 60 minutes, defensive lapses, piss poor passing, and just plain mediocrity aside with a dominating win against the Avalanche.
No worries, this was the plan all along!
Ok.. 4am now..
goodnight all.. let’s reconvene for the Avs tomorrow!
"Kevin, You can't play Doom Metal while wearing a scarf"
They dominated for parts
And completely let Philly have their way with them at others. So confusing.
Good for Hayes, Shaw, and Kane (until the last 3 minutes when I wanted to throttle him).
i actually didn't realize anything happened til he was in the box, so would be interested to hear what happened as well

I saw it
It was absolutely legit. Hightstick to the face. I hate to say it but it looked like a lazy penalty. He took a whack at the puck and on the upswing caught someone in the face. if he would have kept his legs moving he might have been able to be in a better position defensively. Ooh well. Entertaining game nonetheless.
by Skags on Jan 5, 2012 10:39 PM CST via Android app up reply actions
It was entertaining for sure
Kind of reminded me of a little series we had with them a while ago. We won somehting there if I recall
If you must scream to get noticed, maybe you should whisper instead
Eh
Hayes and Shaw, yes, Kane, not so much. Someone made a comment earlier about his defensive game being better even though he’s not scoring as much and I’m just not seeing it. He’s hovering near the same +/- mark as last year with his goal scoring pace dropping considerably. Kid has to step it up. Can’t just float like he has been.
I made the statement that his D game had gotten better
earlier this week and stand by it (didn’t see tonight’s game). He’s not the disaster I’ve seen in the past. For example, his backchecking has improved. Having said that, his defensive game will always need betterment so I’m not going to be the guy that completely vindicates him in that regard.
I do think his scoring pace (total points) is right around his career average even though his shooting percentage is by far his career worst. He should at least improve slightly in this category moving forward. He is on pace to be around a +20, however, which would be a career best for him.
His shooting percentage also does not include the 10 high-shortside misses he has every game either.
I’m not trying to push him under the bus with that comment but trying to shoot out the left eye of the queen on a ten cent piece from 800 yards (ok, maybe bad analogy for repeatedly going high shortside) isn’t the way to get on track and will make you grip the stick tighter.
I was pleased (and surprised) that on the tying goal he was composed enough to settle the puck down and pick his corner. A lot of players going through a goal slump like his would’ve just fired away.
You are next.
by M7 on Jan 6, 2012 12:17 PM CST up reply actions
It was nice to see him break the seal
especially since he did just fire away (straight into Bryz’s lap) a couple of times earlier.
I am much more concerned with his defense, now that he’s had to jump back to center. At the start of the season, he seems eager to prove that he was up to the task.
This time, he seems less than interested and possibly annoyed to be there. I maybe be projecting here, but the lazy penalties and the defensive lapses have been abundant. And not just on goals against.
by ChicagoNativeSon on Jan 6, 2012 12:27 PM CST up reply actions
I agree
I never saw the Kane penalty that ended the game. But when it was announced that it was a high-stick I immediately thought that it was probably a legit not-moving-your-feet-flailing-your-stick-at-the-puck-carrier type penalty. It’s not a good trend when you can start to assume those kinds of things.
You are next.

Don't get your undies in a bunch, but
I thought Hoss had a tough game tonight. A lot of trying to carry the puck and then losing it. There was a LOT of that. And there was the lack of coverage on the one goal. He did have an assist, but I just didn’t seem to notice him being that much of a force out there. And maybe I’m spoiled—I expect him to be a FORCE every game.
I expect he’ll be back with a vengeance tomorrow.
Do you ever have dejavu?
Didn't you just ask me that?

There's been so much bunching of underwear
people need to rethink their Christmas lists. You can find better brands, or just forgo the underwear altogether (I won’t tell…everyone).
The goal coverage
I am in know way trying to completely absolve Hoss of all responsibility on that blown coverage as he sure as hell should have stayed with his man there. But what the hell was Stalberg doing other than standing at the top of the slot watching Hossa release his man? Stalberg was a spectator on that entire sequence and honestly was in a perfect position to pick the man up after Hossa blew it, but if he watch the replay he literally just stands motionless watching what is goign on.

All is not lost
With a win tomorrow night the Hawks should be able to regain the WC lead for at least the weekend. I don’t see the Nucks beating the Bruins on Saturday. Who knows, maybe with another strong game against Scum on Sunday will lead to another win and a 3 point lead and a game in hand on the Nucks.
I think they can still pull 16 out of a possible 26 points this month if they can shore up those little defensive lapses.
No worries, this was the plan all along!
Did anyone else notice a whole lot more blowouts than usual?
I couldn’t believe the number of times a saw guys lose an edge or for whatever other reason take a digger for no discernible reason. Seemed like it happened more to the ’Hawks but both teams had issues. What was up with that? Shitty ice?
There are three types of people in this world: those who can count, and those who can't.
Yeah I noticed that, and it definitely seemed to happen more times to our guys. Kane alone went down like 3 times.

I don't have a problem with this loss.
Rapidly deteriorating team defense aside, Philly is a good team and sometimes you can play your best game against a good team, and they’ll be just the little bit better.
This loss only matters because it stacks on top of all the other boneheaded, totally avoidable losses to teams that ARENT that good, like the Oilers, or the Flames, and every other second-tier team the Hawks have faced and failed to take 2 points from.
When you leave 2 points on the table against teams you SHOULD have dead to rights, suddenly the games you understandably lost sting that much more.
Blackhawks bleed Red & White.
We are all Canucks...including Toews, Sharp, Keith, Seabrook, ...need I go on?

I just hope this means Kane will start a goal-scoring rampage
And he starts putting those shots that had been just off on the near-side in the back of the net. I’m not expecting the other three lines to stay quiet much longer (I’ve given up with Bolland—he looks injured one shift, healthy the next), and I hope this fourth line continues to stay hot. Shaw and Hayes, especially, playing well for their being rookies.
However, the defensive lapses on some shifts this game looked an awful lot like some of that play in mid-November. If this could stop, awesome. Razor made some good saves, but he’s not as quick as I’d like, and as amazing as some plays were, others were equally terrifying.
And congrats to the kid Swedes!
Yeah me too.
And his line looked pretty shitty on defense, but I did appreciate his dive into the goal to stop the puck, even though it didn’t work.
"Well now you're just talking like Foghorn Leghorn!"
The only reason he had to dive into the goal
was because he completely blew his backside coverage of the guy shooting the puck.
That didn’t sound right.
by ChicagoNativeSon on Jan 6, 2012 1:11 PM CST up reply actions
that is true but at least he tried to do something after that. there have been times when i've seen him just standing there
i’m hoping he gets back to where he was at the start of the season where he was really trying. I know he said in an interview that he was having a little trouble adjusting back, but that needs to be over and done with.
"Well now you're just talking like Foghorn Leghorn!"
I missed the latter half of the second period and essentially everything leading up to Seab's goal in the third
But was Kane switched to wing in the latter half of the game? I know he was with Toews and Sharp when he scored his goal, so I’m assuming Q was just throwing guys out there and telling them to pick a position.
Sharp + DDN
is Q’s usual first line after a penalty. There were a couple defensive zone draws where an extra center was out there with Kane, also something Q does with most all of the centers except Toews.
The lines did change a little in the 3rd with Stalberg and Shaw switching places.
The lines got weird towards the end of the game at some points, due to timing I think
Kane was out with Sharp and Toews and Hossa was with Shaw and Stalberg. And then after everything realigned I think there were still some shifts of DDN+Sharp.
"Well now you're just talking like Foghorn Leghorn!"
Is it me or is Hayes looking more and more confident
……saw some fancy dancy skating with the puck. You just can’t coach size.

yeah I understand the kid's just come up
but immediately dropping the gloves and getting pounded like that – ugh, that was hard to watch. Hope he doesn’t make that a daily occurence in order to prove his bona fides – just keep doing that jump start thing near the goal.
I think it was the right-hander from Port Arthur (as Shaw was falling to the ice the first time)
that really opened him up. Rinaldo caught a few good ones coming his way too though.

Pretty Good Back and Forth Game Last Night
A Few pointers
1. Bryz showed why he is slumping. 2 of the 4 goals scored against him were soft and should have been saves. (Kane’s Goal & Seabrook’s Goal) Bryzgalov should have seen them and should have stopped them. (PERIOD)
2. Despite the hard play and the Lead Bryzgalov tried to lose the game but the FLYERS refused to let it happened. He better get his ’chit together fast !
3. Shaw showed some grit and some offensive talent.
4. Hayes looked pretty darn good as well. 2 surprising young rookies looking good for the Blackhawks should make the Chicago fans excited.
5. Razor started to show the East – West, pipe to pipe problems that started to appear in Philadelphia in his brief stint here that surfaced again last night.
6. With the loss of Pronger (no fun without the media fanfare with things like puckgate going on to make the love/hate relationship resurface again) and the “left the game injury” of Timonen makes the FLYERS Defense a very young defense and at times (last night showed it) soft defense. Makes people wonder if Paul Holmgren is going to go out and get a rent a player defenseman before trade deadline to help carry them into the post season Stanley Cup Run. Not to mention that forward Jagr has a mild groin pull as well.
7. This time it was JVR 2 & PK 1 (and so the unfair continued comparison of a 1st overall pick over a 2nd overall pick.) This comparison is actually unfair because although I love JVR, He is not a 50 Goal Scorer and probably never will be. Patrick Kane has the skill level to be a 50 goal scorer.
8. It was nice to see Patrick Kane again ! Loved him when he was in Philly. He has definitely developed his game the last few years in Chi’ town. I think allot of people would love to be on the same line as Kane and Teows.
Too bad we only play once or at the most twice a year !
Overall ~ Great game that changed leads a few times.

Not taking away from Kane’s Scoring Prowness but rather pointing the fact that it was a soft goal for Bryz to let go in. Not much screening and it was pretty much a goal that as a top notched high priced goalie should be able to stop and not watch go past his glove or stick side into the back of the net.

Kane’s absolutely not – an elite NHL offensive talent fields a pass right between the hashmarks, has time to look, picks a corner, and buries it top shelf just inside the post is by no means a soft goal. I can see how you might think Seabrooks’ goal was a little soft, but he’s got a pretty heavy shot and it also looked like the puck may have been deflected by the defender’s stick as he let it go which certainly makes it difficult to stop. Bryz certainly did look like he was fighting the puck at times, but the goals – especially Kane’s – really weren’t all that soft

I think...
“has time to look, picks corner” is why Kane whiffed on that great opportunity in the first period. I’m thinking there are a lot of players in the league that just fire that puck towards the goal. Kane was looking for the opening and took his eye off the puck.
I think that was a bit of an unsettled puck
but it could have been a flat-out whiff

My Flyer Brother...
I think you’re being a little tough of Bryz – he hada pretty poruos defense in front of him from my angle – maybe Seabs shot, but Crazy 88’s was perfectly placed. (Finally, Kane has had numerous chances lately but keeps missing the net. Bryz made a brilliant save on Sharp off an incredible feed from Tazer and also on Kanes vbackhand.
It was not a, defensively, tightly contested game. Emery was clearly hung out to dry by the dreaded “Gapers block” – you know when your on the highway and it’s all backed up and then when you finally get to the cuase you see the only reason traffic had slowed was so people could get a look at the damage. Offensively, Kane had a great night. His line, was horrendous in the d-zone. Blame two of the goals on that line – not Razor.
Your right about the rookie excitement – i realize more games are necessary, but they were not bystanders last night. The best line on the ice might have been Hayes/Mayers/Frolik.
What was up with the bout between Shaw and Rinaldo. Did they text each other before the game and say lets go in the first – I hate that type of fighting – meaningless. And although 65 received a gash, he landed at least two solid rights. Someone said he was “carcillo light” – it looked like he has a little better skill set. He sure as hell did not look like a rookie out there. Loved the way seabs stepped in when Hartnell started messing with the kid.
I think next year with the realignment, every ream in the league plays a home and home.
Did you notice Giroux;s slew foot on Sharp before he got the slashing penalty.
It seems every team in the league is after that coveted, shut down d-man – if Kruger soesn’t get better, Sharp needs to go to center or the hawks need to pick one up.
Kane's goal
Was ripped short side over the shoulder. No goalie on the planet can make that save with any sort of consistency. Tip your hat to Kane. If you want to assign blame, start with the defenseman behind the net who took his time with the puck when Toews stripped him of it that led to the chance. Briz had no shot.
It was a fantastic goal
He fit that in a keyhole.

Anyone else have déjà vu to the Kim Johnsson disappearance game?
At least the ending. Giving up a goal in the waning seconds, just like when Johnsson went into witness protection.
I see a lot of complaints about officiating and I’ve really got none. We got thoroughly out worked for a portion of the 2nd period that happened to result in some nice goals for the Flyers. I don’t put much blame on Emery except for I believe it was the 3rd goal that he coughed a rebound into the slot. The others, like McClure said, required post to post saves and they would have been difficult for anyone to make.
Biggest thing for me is getting thoroughly porked in the faceoff circle. Kane and Bolland most notably. Toews had an OK game but not to his usual dominant self at the pivot.
It was an incredibly entertaining game to watch, despite the outcome. If I were a Flyers fan, I wouldn’t beat up, I mean, I’d be worried about Breezy the Universe Master. He looked shaky at best for them last night. They’d be talking about him a lot in Philly today if they’d lost.
by JesusMarianHossa on Jan 6, 2012 8:23 AM CST via mobile reply actions
Definitely didn't blame this on officiating
but there is no way that the Flyers didn’t do something that should/could have been penalized. No team is that disciplined. Even our little rat does something each game all by himself.

You can always blame the ref - its a defense mechanism
To summarize:
Sharp gets slew footed a second before the 4(?) min hs. Kieth and Kane were both tripped. Hayes was hauled down behind the flyers net.
I’d imagine there were one or two they could have called on us though.
Shaw did some nice things last night
but his fight was not one of them.
If a young kid like Shaw, in his first NHL, is known to be a bit of an agitator and pugilist, Q and crew need to have a discussion with him before the game on when having a scrap is acceptable. I know Shaw is just trying to show the Hawks something because his time here is not gauranteed, but to me, the fight was a mark against him.
The Hawks had just scored first in the opposition’s building, and after Shaw got bloodied trying to prove himself, the Wells Fargo center was all amped up having forgotten (temporarily) that they were down a goal. The slight momentum swing didn’t really cost the Hawks, but in this instance, the decision should be questioned regardless of the outcome.
Sweet goal though, kid.

Totally agree with this sentiment
I was pretty pissed off at him for settling an old OHL score after the team takes a lead on the road. That was a terrible decision. He got his ass beat to boot which only gave life to the crowd. If Q wasn’t in his ear as soon as he came back out of the tunnel, I will be sorely disappointed.
Also agree on the goal. Great hands.
by JesusMarianHossa on Jan 6, 2012 8:36 AM CST up reply actions
The fight was stupid
as most tend to be, but Sassone has him quoted saying something like, “he asked me to go, and I really don’t like saying no”. Still stupid, but at least somewhat amusing.
Keith magnuson said he finally retired the day someone asked him to go and he had to think about it..
He went right up to Ivans(?) office and said I’m done.
I’m not a proponent of fighting, especially the mindless crap like that fight. But he was asked to go. In addition – how was the foight so one sided? Sure he rodeo’d the kid to the ground, but I still say Shaw landed the best two punches.
I think the fight had zero impact on the game.
Me too
I’m just saying that most fights are needless and this one was a prime example – completely staged like you said up top somewhere. A better response may have been, “dude, it’s my second shift ever in the NHL, maybe later”.
one thing for sure...
he had adrenaline flowing the rest of the game. A great effort by the Lilliputian
The correct answer with a one goal lead is...
“Fuck you, it’s a long season.” and skate away.
Better if you get him to punch as you continue to skate away, and get him in the box for roughing. Then go after him in the 3rd, or next year when we play home and home.
Meanwhile I’m sure carbomb is watching on telly, taking notes and hoping he gets to return.

Speaking of the tunnel..
Did anyone see how jacked up Dylan Olsen was as Andrew Shaw was going off to the locker room after his fight? It doesn’t make it not a highly questionable fight, but it was hilarious to see that Dylan Olsen was probably the most excited person in the building buy it. If you DVR’d the game, take a look.
I do stuff for CheerTheAnthem
Olsen was one of the guys I didn't notice last night
Which is a good thing. Unlike not noticing Bryan Bickell and Dave Bolland (except for botched clearing attempts).
by JesusMarianHossa on Jan 6, 2012 8:57 AM CST up reply actions
the only really shaky moment was when he sort of whiffed on that one clearing attempt
Leddy’s turnover really hurt I think he had 3 Flyers converging on him, but decided to get cute. Not taking anything away fome Nick, otherwiase i thought he did a lot of good thiongs out there.
Olsen
For the most part, I didn’t notice a ton of mistakes, but the way he played Couturier on the Zolnierczk goal left a lot to be desired. When Couturier came in on the right side, Olsen overskated the play a bit, which allowed an easy passing lane for Couturier to get the puck to the net. There were a lot of mistakes made on that play, so it’s certainly not all on him, but it was a noteworthy mistake.
This is Hack in the Pork Chop Express, and I'm talkin' to whoever's listenin' out there.
good point...
i was sort of wondering – it seemed like Edzo sort of put some blame on Olsen for that. The way you explain it makes sense. Wasn’t that the play Hossa became an innocent bystander?
Hossa was on Zol
all the way down to the circle, but when Zol moved into the slot, Hossa let him go. I’m no expert on defensive positioning; it’s probably on Hoss to some degree, but Stalberg had the best view of the goal (as he was watching it all happen from the slot).

as Konroyd pointed out in the post game though
our fowards werte mback there but were sort of just standing around, focusing on the puck rather than where the puck might go. On Van Riems goal did no one see him skating up?
Stalberg was most certainly standing still
Hossa sort of peeled off almost like he was playing a zone defense. Though like Hack, I have no idea what exactly the Hawks philosophy calls for in that instance.
I do stuff for CheerTheAnthem
He also seemed really soft on his passing
From below the net. Recall a few soft leaves and attempted clears (?) that wound up sitting on the boards allowing Flyers forwards opportune chances to get to the puck on their aggressive forecheck.

How many goals did rinaldo, (shouldn’t he be palying soccer), have? i rest my case.
I certainly didn't think it was any sort of clear victory for Rinaldo
Yes Shaw was bloodied, but he landed as many solid punches as Rinaldo and did so without trying to swing Rinaldo to the ground by the front of his sweater instead of throwing punches after explicitly asking someone to fight

by ccm on Jan 6, 2012 9:25 AM CST up reply actions
Certainly don't mind the aggravation
and shockingly I don’t mind the goal either. I appreciate Shaw’s willingness to fight anyone, but he needs to learn that there are times to drop the gloves and times to say no. I get what Wardrums was saying about Magnuson above, but there’s a massive difference between Magnuson hesitating in that situation and Shaw saying “this is my 2nd ever NHL shift and we just went up 1-0 in your building, I need to actually play hockey instead of giving your team a chance to regain a bit of momentum and your crowd a chance to get back into the game”. Not saying the fight had any tangible outcome on the final, just saying that it wasn’t a smart time to fight.

agreed on all points
That fight was utterly pointless. But he looked good with the puck.
I remember another chance hit the goal post and hit Briz in the back and somehow didn’t go in.
btw what was up with Foley and Edzo's man love for Carcillo last night?
they just went on and on and on discussing his awesomeness and how he changed his play in order to accomodate the Hawks’s style of play (I’d agree a little bit, but WTF?). Then they expounded how having a guy like Carbomb sitting next to you on the bench makes you “feel a little bigger over there.” How the Hawks were lacking that presence last year (agreed), and how Carbomb really made all the difference. Did they get a memo from management to pump him up since he’s sidelined, or what?
It's because Foley and Ezdo, especially when paired together, have some serious meathead tendencies

not only that
but in the midst of their long – winded paens to his greatness, I kept thinking about how there was no stat they could ever point to that would prove his supposed value to the Hawks. Lots of bad penalties for sure, but the rest was just hot air. Really annoying.
The only real way to show his value to the team
would be to compare the team stats – record, GF, GA, etc. – when Carcillo’s in the line-up to when he’s out. And I have a sneaking suspicion that there won’t be a very big difference one way or the other…

Pat and Eddie
The only guy they were willing to call out last night was Stahlberg. A very safe choice on their part. I don’t envy them as they do need to travel and hang with the team for 8 months, but if you’re only going to call out one or two guys, don’t even bother.
Eddie kind of blamed Hossa on that goal, too.
He said Stalberg “went for a skate” (I love that phrase) on that play and Hossa was too soft on the goal scorer.
Agreed
but a little later on it was, “Stahlberg only had one hand on his stick”. Personally, I thought both Seabrook and Keith played that last goal about as bad as you can possibly play it. Crickets.
Mayers had plenty of time to pressure Giroux
It started with him.
This is Hack in the Pork Chop Express, and I'm talkin' to whoever's listenin' out there.
I was a little surprised
just how far Hartnell got behind Seabrook. He completely lost track and just stood there watching Mayers not pressuring Giroux as you say. I don’t recall them calling out Mayers or anyone else on that play, but only marveling at how the Flyers passed the puck.
I'm not saying
Pat and Eddie should be calling out every damn mistake because as CNS said a week or two ago, the whole game is filled with glaring mistakes or words to that effect. I just get annoyed when they tee up there little whipping boys and give passes to most everyone else.
Oh, yeah, I hate that
I’m fairly certain Nick Leddy has never made a mistake in an NHL game ever. At least, that’s what I’ve gathered from the broadcasts.
(and that’s not to pick on Leddy, just saying they definitely have their favorites.)
by Katherine215 on Jan 6, 2012 11:49 AM CST up reply actions
Yeah.
3/5ths of Philly’s PP was making a line-change so when Giroux pulls up at the line the defender has to realise that he’s got perfect man coverage and should’ve went right at him (instead of trying to cover a passing lane that wasn’t there – Giroux’s only real play was moving the puck down low).
You are next.
by M7 on Jan 6, 2012 12:41 PM CST up reply actions
As much as it was a breakdown by Mayers in coverage
it was just as much a breakdown in communication from the back-end that should have been telling Mayers that Giroux had nowhere to move the puck except down the boards so close in and take away his time and space
There are three types of people in this world: those who can count, and those who can't.
by FrankStallone on Jan 6, 2012 12:48 PM CST up reply actions
You're right.
Easy to lump all the responsibility on Mayers but the bottom line is that the “team” defensive coverage there should’ve recognised an opportunity to press hard at that moment. Passive coverage bought Giroux way too much time.
To play devil’s advocate, Giroux (offensively gifted players in general) create goals by creating time for themselves. That being said, it’s the defensive priorty to recognise what Giroux’s trying to do. Good offensive play that should’ve been defensed better.
You are next.
by M7 on Jan 6, 2012 12:55 PM CST up reply actions
Just re-watched that goal
and you’re completely right. A 2 on 4 into the zone. Giroux stops, Hartnell winks at Seabrook on the way by. JVR isn’t even in the picture for awhile, Seabrook is too far away to close quick enough on Hartnell, Keith forgets that quite possiblly other Flyers may join the play at some point, and they score 3 on 4. I understand even more now why Q was so pissed off.
I was reminded of game 6, 2010, but not the Kane goal
With under 4:00 to go in regulation we had a one goal lead. Philly entered the zone 3 on 4. 4 Hawks were back and in perfect defensive position, yet not one of them moved to check anyone, not even the puck carrier. Despite four men back, the Flyers were able to skate in like it was a 3 on 1 and find a wide open weak side.
It is clear to me that at times, our forwards don’t know what to do on D. We saw it in 2010, last year, and in the last two games.
