wow!! what a save.

I’ll bet if I was goalie… well if I could actually skate and play hockey and be a goalie, I don’t think I’d be able to make a save like that.

I’m just sayin

by Skags on Jan 6, 2012 10:15 AM CST reply actions

That was a crazy good save by Visentin

And Brian Burke is a dillhole. So the only way to teach players to respect one another and decrease the amount of injuries is to have goons on your roster whose sole purpose is to beat the shit out of people and possibly injure them? You have to love that logic.

See if you can guess what I am now.

by IndianHeadCrest on Jan 6, 2012 10:15 AM CST reply actions

If hayes and Shaw play like they did last night...

filling holes is not a urgent concern. Was anyone else besides me wondering why our fourth line didn’t get more action in the third?

A defensman and a center are just about everyone’s priorities. You don’t think Philly needs help on the blue line?

The question is, who’s willing to pay the highest price for the relatively few refugge’s out there.

by wardrums on Jan 6, 2012 10:38 AM CST reply actions

So... pretty much 110% Corey Crawford tonight, yes?

For reason of B2B, not Emery’s showing last night. Razor did his job pretty well last night.

Crow please,

Razor got his share of work all right. I cringe whenever he goes post to post and wonder about his hip taking a dump on him!

Razor

was OK, not great. Considering his mates made him face 40+ shots, I can excuse some lapses. He must have felt like he was in a practice drill.

Bolland injury speculation

I see some talk about Bolland playing this season injured. How does Bolland playing at 80% help? No there is no link, just some things I have read on this site.
Something is wrong with him. Either linemates, wear and tear, or he is indeed injured.

Doesn't FLA have somebody we could trade Bolland for?

I know we don’t want to trade Dave, he is legendary, but he needs to start to bring it a little more. And ORG, if he is injured, sit him down, now.

Didn't he break his foot

earlier in the season? Maybe he is still hampered by that injury.

Am I missing something...

I don’t see huge problems in Bollands play. he was plus one last night, 3 blocked shots although he was woeful at the dot. That probably led to a lot of the sustained pressure Philly put on in the second. He played over 15 minutes but his linemates were under 10.

by wardrums on Jan 6, 2012 11:55 AM CST up reply actions

I feel it's his linemates

Fro & Travis, when do they step into the pressbox for a game?

What about something like

Toews between Hossa and Shaw
Bolland between Sharp and Kane
Mayers between Stals and Hayes
Fro between Bicks and Brunette

looks like a

1/1/4/4 line set up. No like. Being charitable, either of those two bottom lines could be classified a “third” line.

I’ll buy into the argument that bolland could use some real wingers.

by oregon_hawk on Jan 6, 2012 12:40 PM CST up reply actions

So last year, with Bickell and Pisani

wingers weren’t the issue. But this year they are?

a salient point.

Bolland had issues last year as well – didn’t he go forever without scoring?

by oregon_hawk on Jan 6, 2012 1:17 PM CST up reply actions

2010-11

Bolland: 37 pts, 61 games
2 special teams goals out of 15 total goals

If he played 61 games this year, he’d be on pace for 27 pts, but 5 of his 8 goals so far have come on special teams (which is great). But he’s on pace for 5 EV goals. Ouch.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Jan 6, 2012 1:30 PM CST up reply actions

Yes, you are missing something.

Obviously he is not a terrible player rather he is quite good at hockey. He is not playing like I remember him playing the last 3 years. He has little speed this year compared to the league. Don’t you remember how he used to be a threat on the PK? Could be that he is worn out from chasing down wild shots from Fro and Bickell. For me, he looks lost on the offensive side, which is partly why he was so good at being a checking line center. The other teams top lines had to not only deal with his defensive skills, but they had to play D against him. The Offense is missing.

by laaarmer on Jan 6, 2012 12:29 PM CST up reply actions

I'm not trying to be a Bickell apologists here

since I expected prior to the season he’d come back down to earth this year. But other than scoring, Bick’s numbers have been remarkably similar to last season. My eyes tell me something’s waaay different with Bolly, and using Bickell as a constant seems to confirm my belief that it’s Bolland, not his linemates.

And I don’t think it’s Frolik that’s a major cause, only a minor one. His defense has been great. His scoring sucks, but it’s not like Bolly is providing him with tasty dishes. Bolland and Bickell got it done last season mostly with Pisani as a linemate. Any addition they’ve had this season (Stalberg, Bruno, etc) is as good or better than Fernando. So again, it’s not Bolland’s support that’s letting him down.

Bickell and Frolik provided the only opportunities again last night. Bolland was slow to the puck, stayed away from the boards, and mostly hovered near the top of the zone (like he needed to cheat to get back in time). Same shit, different day.

Something’s up with Rat.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Jan 6, 2012 12:55 PM CST up reply actions

Something is up with Bolly

Too many times he’s forced a turnover (which he remains good at – has always had a quick stick in defensive coverage) and then given it away blindly (e.g. ringing the boards from the opposite corner which amounts to a pass to their point man). He used to take the time to skate those out of danger (or at least skate himself into position to see where he could relieve the puck to). This tells me something is not quite right. Your first few strides are critical out there and he has rarely had them.

You are next.

by M7 on Jan 6, 2012 1:05 PM CST up reply actions

When I read all about

how Bolly was spending so much time in the gym during the off-season and had dedicated himself to remaining injury free this year I expected the year of the Rat.
Instead I got the first 5 or so games of the Rat.

The foot injury hampered him for a while and may still be bothering him who knows. Maybe he caught wind of some people in the organization thinking he milked his concussion and that is contributing to his lackluster performance OR maybe his name has been brought up in trade talks.

I love the Rat when he plays like the Rat, but honestly if other GMs want NHL ready players who on this team has any significant value? Fro has some, Bickell has little, OD is too slow / old, Lepisto may have some but who would know it.

Not trying to start a rumor here just doing a little speculating. I kind of doubt that he would be traded at this time seeing as C is one of the positions that SB has already notified the entire world that he is seeking, but who knows, maybe the Rat is just having a bad year.

No worries, this was the plan all along!

Honestly, and I may be in the minority but,

yes the Hawks could use some help on the blueline, but I still think there is something wrong with either the system or the manner in which the system is being played.

I mean the defensive players are at least as good as the the pairings during the cup year, OD / Monty / Lepisto = > than Boynton / Hendry right, or am I delusional?

No worries, this was the plan all along!

by Tuke on Jan 6, 2012 2:02 PM CST up reply actions

Our 2nd pairing was a lot better too though

Hjalmarsson and Campbell were playing worlds better than Leddy Hjalmarsson.

World's better may be a slight exaggeration

but my point remains that Soup + Hammer played better then, than Leddy + Hammer are playing now

by Tuke on Jan 6, 2012 2:10 PM CST up reply actions

I think getting a puck mover

(Not named Campoli) will be a pleasant addition, it’ll let Monty do what he does better (more of a defensive oriented dman) and solidify the power play as well… (Maybe allowing us to go to a more traditional PP system).

The downside to this, is that player really doesn’t exist out there atm… Unless the Hawks try to trade for someone who isn’t on the market. Read: Overpay

by Katherine215 on Jan 6, 2012 3:30 PM CST up reply actions

You’re forgetting Sopel. I’m not sure OD/Monty/Lepisto is actually playing better than Sopel/Boynton/Hendry. Also the Leddy Campbell thing, but I’m not sure how significantly better that is.

I've been thinking the same thing

Sam mentioned that his line gets hemmed in the zone often and since he said that, I’ve noticed it more and more. I don’t know WTF is up with Rat but he’s playing much closer to that moniker than his previous, Fabulous Weapon.

by Skags on Jan 6, 2012 1:14 PM CST up reply actions

I'm going to try to zero in on the Rat tonight.

part of the problem may stem from the faceoffs. The other team gets possession and Boll’s line has to start chasing. Didn’t Boll/Stal/Bick seem to work for a few games?

by wardrums on Jan 6, 2012 12:57 PM CST up reply actions

I thought so

but it wasn’t due to Bolland. Bickell and Stalberg were the one’s providing the opportunities for each other, many of them via nice passes from beneath the goal line. They just couldn’t finish. (shocking, I know)

by ChicagoNativeSon on Jan 6, 2012 1:01 PM CST up reply actions

My memory may be skewed but,

wasn’t Bolly playing pretty decently as the #2 pivot last season before Kubina’s elbow?

No worries, this was the plan all along!

I don't know why we need to get into defensive mode

The play played well. Isn’t that good enough? I don’t know of anyone who wants them to suit up for the all-star game or hang their jersey in the rafter. Sample size, shample size. They were called up, they played well, I like it.

Might they regress into complete dopes who forget how to skate? I doubt it. I like the contribution they’re making, they seem to work hard on the ice and I like it.

I think the point is

yes, they both looked like studs last night and yes, Hayes has looked better in each game than he did in the previous (IMO), but we’re still talking about 2 guys that have played a combined 4 games in the NHL. If they keep this up, it’s time to start salivating

Foley

Couple things…

1) wow. Not sure what’s going on with PF, and I really like him, but sheeees!! He was really bad last night. Not only did he miss the player about 10 times, but several time his description of the action wasn’t what actually happened. I know I’m nitpicking a little but, I find it distracting. No, that was Shaw not Stalberg. No, that’s not Toews. No that puck didn’t deflect up the middle or off the post. Come on Pat! Pick it up!

2) Did he really say that a huge part of the success so far this season and why the Hawks are near the top of the standing is due to Daniel Carcillo? Can anyone confirm that?

by Skags on Jan 6, 2012 12:58 PM CST reply actions

I get sandpaper

I thought I heard him say “Dan Carcillo is a huge part of why the Hawks are at the top of the standings.” He’s only played in 28 games. And there were many games that he was pretty invisible.

Mayers provides sandpaper too, and he can play.

by Skags on Jan 6, 2012 1:10 PM CST up reply actions

I was being facetious

I’ve had ambivalent feelings about Carcillo all year. I certainly feel like he’s one of the easier pieces of the puzzle to fill in.

by wardrums on Jan 6, 2012 1:13 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed

I feel like they were almost trying to sell us on Carcillo. This is complete conjecture and probably false, but it was almost like the higher ups wanted to keep the fans on Carbomb’s side after he was a complete jagaloon on sunday and helped cost us a game. Probably not a conspiracy as I am making it out to be, but it just seemed a little unsolicited at the time of the broadcast last night.

Who is gonna replace him?

Numerous stories in the beginning of the year how Carbomb jelled with Kane and Hossa in the nosiest corner of the locker room. On the ice he answered the bell for whomever he played with. Need gritty role players like this to compliment our skilled players

Ver™

by ccm on Jan 6, 2012 2:08 PM CST up reply actions

Those reasons you listed...

Jelling with Kane and Hossa- that’s not hard.

Answering the bell- plenty of guys will answer the bell for a cup contender.

Gritty role players- I agree. We need gritty role players.

But what you’re suggesting is that Carcillo was the gritty role player we needed. No, he wasn’t. He was gritty, he was a role player, but he’s not the guy. I’d like to think that on our way to the Stanley Cup we can do it without a guy who has already, in half a season, served multiple suspensions for being wreckless and selfish. No thanks.

Half the games he did play in, when he wasn’t suspended or a healthy scratch, he was practically invisible. That’s the guy that we need to win a cup that we can’t replace?

Again… I’m not 100% sure you’re serious.

If you can get both Getz and Beauchemin in a deal

I will gladly give up Bolland in a deal.

Bolland Frolik Olsen + a pick or two a prospect or two.. whatever.

The Ducks can save the Hawks, and the Hawks can afford both today (although they will scrape by) if they wait till the deadline they can do even more.

Right now Capgeek says we have 9.6 in cap hits we can take on. At the deadline we can take on nearly 22 mil

That would be sweet but getzlaf is going to earn a huge return or remain in anaheim.
