Maybe Things Will Be Better In Chicago: Avalanche @ Blackhawks - Preview/Pre-Game Thread/Blind Taste Test

Avalanche_snowman_medium @ Altlogo_medium

Game Time: 7:30PM
TV/Radio: CSN/WGN720
The Oxygen Deprived: Mile High Hockey

Extended losing streaks aren't going to make things very easy in this league. The Hawks have gone pointless for three games only once this year and they're only a week removed from a stretch where they were 8-2-0 but they still find themselves in danger of losing their position atop the Central Division, after having already given up the top position in the conference. Both Detroit and St. Louis are both right on the Hawks heels (and Scum have a game in hand). While the Hawks are clearly in better shape than they were last year, the packed Western Conference with the 9th place Dallas Stars only 7 points behind the Hawks. Which just goes to show you how fucked the Ducks and Blue Jackets are with only 26 and 25 points respectively.

So this whole 1-3-0 thing isn't really helping the Hawks much, it's not really as bad as it may seem. Sure, it has pointed out and perhaps exaggerated some of the weaknesses we know the Hawks have but the losses aren't quite as bad as they would seem. Quick stood on his head to shutout the Hawks, the wheels fell off against the Oilers after Carbomb's little adventure in idiocy and even with the disaster of the defensive performance last night they almost eeked out at least a point. And that's about as rosey as you'll see us around here for the most part.

What is really the point, is that the Hawks need to turn things back around and they need to do it quick or the second half of this season (which begins after tonight's game) is going to be a lot more of a bother than we were hoping for. Tonight they get to hopefully get things going in the right direction against what has become one of the hottest teams in the league. The Avs have only two loses in their last 10 games. Even with all those points adding up though, they're still on the outside looking in when it comes to the playoffs.

One of the main reasons for the Avs return to relevance has been the stepped up play from their goalies. Semyon Varlamov has taken on the lion's share of play with 27 starts to Jean-Sebastien Giguere's 14 but both goalies have helped the Avs find their way back into the win columns. Jiggy (who started his NHL career back with the Whale) in particular has been quite a surprise out in Colorado. You wouldn't be alone in thinking he was pretty much done a few years ago but he's found another level to his game in the thin air. Varlamov gets the nod tonight though. Varly (do people actually call him that?) has been solid in his last three starts and hasn't given up more than 2 goals. His last game on Monday was the best of the three as he held the Kings to only a single goal, stopping 31 shots.

The penalty kill has been another reason for the Avs sudden surge. While they only rank 19th in the league, they've only allowed three power play goals against in their last 10 games and none in their last three. Meanwhile, the Hawks power play has fallen to 15th in the league, now 6 behind Colorado. Gabriel Landeskog is once again the player to watch for this game as he's been one of the Avs best all-around players despite his mediocre showing on the scorecard. The Avs are without Matt Duchene which is a shame because he's a really fun player to watch but I won't be shedding too many tears. Ryan Wilson has been cleared to play after suffering a concussion but the Avs aren't in a big rush to play him too soon and he may sit out tonight's game... what a concept, eh?

The Blackhawks aren't going to have to deal with the ferocious forecheck like they did last night since the Avs are a team that likes to play with speed.. and they certainly have a lot of it. Theoretically, this should play in the Hawks favor though as they like the style as well and can wilt under a lot of pressure as they try to set up their classic home run pass followed immediately by the drop pass. The Hawks should be looking for a good game from Hossa after his unusually poor showing last night. I haven't seen any word on the lines yet but I wouldn't expect them to be radically different than last night... though with Q, anything's possible. The only question is, are you ready for a Brunette-Shaw-Olsen line? I think you are.

Let's Go Hawks

If you’re ever in a real bind for something, let me know and I can easily order something and you can transfer me some cake via PayPal. You just need to check on what your “gift allowance” is such that you don’t pay duties. I know that to the UK it’s something like 50 quid/person/shipment (at which point you just lie if it’s more than that…).

Yeah. Exactly

I knew you were in Ireland, just drawing a conclusion that your allowance was probably similar to that of UK (once converted to Euro’s).

We ship “gifts” to my wife’s relatives all the time and duck VAT pretty easily. Sometimes indicating that gifts are for two different people on the customs form (the per person allowance still stands though – hence the need to indicate gifts for multiple people).

Better then I did for lasts nights, but it is going to be kinda ironic I think. I think the Hawks will have dealt better with the tougher forechecking team in PHI, then the speed of COL, but in the end still come out on top.

Better D from the forwards is all I ask.

Either they are in position and cover the wrong guy (or should I say double cover), or they are out of position, or worst of the three, in position but struck by the Freeze Ray and unable to move as if waiting for an eight year old to holler Green Light.

This is a team that Chicago absolutely should beat.

Don’t leave another 2 points on the table, when you learned last night that even playing a great game doesn’t guarentee victory against other great teams.

Blackhawks bleed Red & White.

this one worries me… the Avs seem to be the sort of team we struggle against lately (the ‘Playoff-fringe’ crew like the Oil and the Yotes)

"Kevin, You can't play Doom Metal while wearing a scarf"

by mightymike D on Jan 6, 2012 3:13 PM CST up reply actions

It does seem as though there's this irritating range of teams...

….too good for the Hawks to just coast over on pure talent, but not good enough for them to actually ‘get up for’ and put forth a real, 100% effort.

The danger, of course, is even when you DO put 100% effort into beating a team like Philly, they just might be the better team that day.

So a smart team, would put effort into EVER game, and secure all the 2points they can.

Blackhawks bleed Red & White.

by mhsilver on Jan 6, 2012 3:57 PM CST up reply actions

I think they put the effort in..

it just seems like, right after a “Big” game we play one of these guys.. and it hasn’t gone so well, thus far.. but I’m looking forward to tonight: if it becomes a game of swift, offensive Hockey then there should only be one winner..

I should ignore this but...

Exactly how was Ladd in Q’s doghouse? He was one of Q’s most respected players. He was Bollands right hand man and on the Hybrid lines with Bolland and Havlat. No idea why you think Q didn’t like him.

And great Brouwer has a couple extra goals on 17.5% shooting. That is a highly maintainable way to produce goals. Top line on an offensive team and he has 19 points. That’s three points behind Stalberg who plays for half of Brouwer’s salary. Yeah, studly performance since he left Q’s doghouse.

I think Montador has shown to be far more aggressive than originally hoped. So the Monty Lepisto matchup hasn’t been as desirable as originally thought. I’m thinking they want and are probably looking for a more defensive D-man to play on the PK and pair with Monty…

An honest question

Do you see any reason Scott dresses on this team? Do you fear he might rip one of your guys heads off or is it more ‘we should light him up’

If you must scream to get noticed, maybe you should whisper instead

by Z-man24 on Jan 6, 2012 6:29 PM CST up reply actions

I have a skewed perspective

As I lurk here a good deal.

But my own perspective also stems from the days that the Sharks had both Jody Shelly and Brad Staubitz on the team. That season, their combined salary, and the cap situation, meant that Logan Couture spent most of the season toiling in the AHL, when he could have been helping us.

I was sad to see Shelly go because he was a real character guy, and the hardest worker on the team, but dressing him meant that he would only play 6 minutes a night, and the other three lines had to pick up the slack.

So if I see a guy like Scott dress on the other side, I do not worry at all, because it means playing the other 17 skaters dressed that night even harder can yield better results.

Yes

If you dress an “enforcer” he needs to be able to do something other than drop the gloves.

Brad Winchester has quickly become a fan favorite in San Jose, because while he can drop the gloves, he and his line have become quite literally the best fourth line in team history.

Mystery House uses his size to cycle the puck, screen the netminder, and he has a wicked shot to boot! So, if you dress him, it’s business as usual. He can drop with the goons, but he also plays hockey.

The NBA lockout was about solving competitive balance and the hemorrhaging money in the smaller markets

The NHL lockout will not be about the former as much as it will be the latter. That, mixed in with the competition committee issues. The players are not happy AT ALL with their role in that department.

No where else is that truer than Chicago

Wirtz Beverage and their ledger almost stand to benefit from not having to pay the salaries of the players they have under contract. If the United Center didn’t have alcohol provided by WB and Rocky didn’t share the deed with Jerry Reinsdorf, he’d likely benefit (business wise) in a greater fashion should a lockout happen.

by JesusMarianHossa on Jan 6, 2012 6:47 PM CST up reply actions

That seems like the only logical explanation.

It could really bite them in the ass if the NHL files a lawsuit and wins it though.

I was neverreally thrilled about the realignment plan

But not totaly opposed to it either. I was willing to give it a whirl.

What concerns me about this is, given how favorable it appeared to most in Hockey (owners, players, fans) Fehr (NHLPA head asshole) was able to convince the union to not give consent. If this is the case, he plans on playing hardball with the owners this summer, and his track history of being the Head Union Fuck negotiating with the owners scares me(1994 MLB, 2nd half of season and ALL Playoffs including the World Series). If this is only the tip of what he plans on trying to do, I do not like the prospects of the Union allowing the CBA to carry over for an additional season (by not terminating it after the SCF and 90 days prior to next season) or having a fairly easy (though not hard fought) resolution to a new CBA. I am now very concerned about a potential NHL Lockout/Strike to at least start off next season.

would suck...

not to have a full season of hockey but that’s the ebb and flow of today’s sports world. Hopefully the two sides can be level-headed and reach an agreement before pissing off their fan base.

If it was not Fehr at the Helm

I would not be overly concerned. But he had part in destroying baseball for the last half of the 90’s and it is now even more broken then it was then!

Baseball is raking in so much money its not even funny

MLB Advanced Media is one of the biggest cash drivers in all of pro sports. It pisses off bloggers, sure. But MLB.tv makes baseball SO much money. They found a way to monetize their media outside of television contracts. Not many other sports can say that.

As illustrated below, I’m just as nervous as you are about Fehr. I hold on to this though… During the last NHL lockout, the players were pushed to the brink and they turned on Goodenow. Their union isn’t nearly as tight as MLBPA. In fact, the MLBPA might be the strongest union in America. If pushed hard again, the NHLPA will turn on Fehr, just as they did Goodenow.

Money wise I agree with the MLB

Overall health wise as a sport, it is hurting.

Don't let things like ratings fool you, TMFF

Baseball has never been healthier. The whole “World Series Ratings Down! Baseball in Trouble!” narrative is just something written by people like Jason McIntyre who want to make pro sports leagues they don’t watch similar to those that they do watch.

Attendance has been up every year since 2004. MLB Advanced Media is one of the most profitable enterprises in sports. It’s an international game, unlike football. Baseball isn’t hurting in the least.

If you are interested in more of it, read bizofbaseball when you have some free time. Maury Brown does a great job spelling out how well the sport is doing financially as well as in terms of growing a new generation of fans.

by JesusMarianHossa on Jan 6, 2012 7:21 PM CST up reply actions

I am not talking ratings or money

But the overall health of the sport. IT is a Cash Cow in almost every area it tries. BUT, it IS alienating fans in many cities (PIT, KC, MIN, WSH for example). Eventually if certain things are not fixed (competitive balance being the primary) it will continue to lose fans in these cities, with others soon to follow, because they give up hope of seeing a winner.

by Toews-makes-funny-faces on Jan 6, 2012 7:24 PM CST up reply actions

PIT/KC yes

WSH is a transient city inhabited by people that aren’t from there and it also has an established market just 40 miles away. Minnesota I can’t agree on. They’re a big market with that new stadium.

KC, PIT, OAK are the problems that should be addressed in terms of competition for sure. Otherwise, I don’t see an issue.

Good stuff though. I’m actually more of a baseball fan at heart than a hockey fan so I love talking baseball. I’ve just been kicked in the nuts for 28 years instead of the 10 that the Hawks were in the hockey dark ages.

I used to be a MLB first fan

But I have become very disgruntled with the MLB (NYY being a big reason, and the Cubs lack of give a fuck last year for another). I am more Hockey these days, but Baseball still runs strongly through my veins.

ditto this

Baseball and hockey were always tied as my favorite sports growing up. Can’t get into MLB these days, which is completely a product of the league having too many teams that will never amount to anything and the Yankees having the money to forever buy themselves a strong team.

by aeroplane on Jan 6, 2012 7:56 PM CST up reply actions

I am an unapologetic Capitalist (if you may have noticed)

However as a business model, I think the MLB is seriously fucking itself by letting such a small group of teams control so much of the talent. Now if this is how they want to do it, it’s their gig they are free too. I just have lost interest in its final product. Before I am a Cubs fan I am a Baseball fan, I care about the health of the sport more then just the Cubs. The same goes for Hockey, and I am concerned Fehr may fuck with a pretty good base system the NHL has going for it now.

unapologetic capitalist

not sure exactly what this means, but congrats on feeling strongly about this economic system.

I do think it’s funny that you feel conflicted on capitalism when it comes to MLB, though ;)

by aeroplane on Jan 6, 2012 8:29 PM CST up reply actions

Capitalism is an national economic system

As for the MLB, I argue, by letting a few teams control the majority of the talent, it will eventually hurt the league. I have no issue with the Yankees making huge profits, but they also have the system tilted that enables them and hurts their competition as well. And all of this in a business model.

As a Capitalist, I will argue that the MLB is completely free to run their business as they feel fit in the current model, but it does not mean I have to agree with that model that they use amongst themselves.

Capitalism is the ability to do it, which I agree the MLB does, Balancing out the competition is the best for the fans as whole, while individual profits by a team they are free to do the best they can (this being removed from the Capitalistic function on the macro level of an economy)

by Toews-makes-funny-faces on Jan 6, 2012 8:37 PM CST up reply actions

yeah. I still think it’s funny that your micro view of capitalism diverges from your macro view of it. Even if you rationalization is that MLB has the right to model their product as they see fit (within the capitalist model), one can say that government(s) have those same powers/rights.

Anyhow, I think this is getting away from hockey/sports. Would love to continue this discussion, but this isn’t the right venue for it.

by aeroplane on Jan 6, 2012 8:54 PM CST up reply actions

My last word(s)
one can say that government(s) have those same powers/rights.

But I would not say this, and argue against it.

Of course they will diverge, because as I noted one is the ability to do something (I support) the other being the action (I do not).

Because I do not agree with something does not = The right or even the desire to say it should not be done. I will defend the ability of free speech no matter how disgusting it is used, the right to be protected from unwarranted searches or seizure no matter how apparent guilt may be. This is just a continuation of that philosophy, I support the right but it does not mean I have to support how it is used. As a money maker the MLB model works, which is the goal of the owners, but for the fans, I think it fucks many of them, but they are free to do that and I will not make a stand it should be “regulated” or “illegal” to afford or make what I desire to be. I want the MLB to be the one to do this and believe they are the only ones who can do it.

by Toews-makes-funny-faces on Jan 6, 2012 9:02 PM CST up reply actions

I guess in short

It is the possession of the right vs how it is used, just like any other right. Everyone has the freedom of speech but it does not mean you have to like how one uses it.

The MLB has the right to run itself as they determine is best, but how they do it does not mean I have to like or agree with it.

Interesting blog post

OTF is looking at forwards and defensemans zone starts and quality of competition. And for the Hawks how much more match-uppity Q is for the forwards than for his defenseman.

That got me to thinking. The Hawks really do have much more two way players playing defense than they do playing forwards. You don’t have those traditional stay at home purely defensive d-men on the Hawks. Anyway, interesting post.
