Not Quite What We're Looking For: Scum 3 - Blackhawks 2

The game was entertaining as hell and the Hawks got a point out of it... that's something right? Bittersweet though. With the Hawks loss in OT they forced a 3-way tie for first place in the central between Scum, Hawks and Blues... and just imagine the hate-fucking that would go in that threesome. The Hawks came out firing in the first.. actually capitalizing on their first power play opportunity and following it up less than a minute later when Patrick Sharp brought the puck to the center of the ice and took advantage of some poor positioning from the Wings to put the Hawks up two. Sadly, that's the last the Hawks would see of both Shooter and the back of the net. Despite a fast and exciting back and forth game, the Hawks would fall victim to Pavel Datsyuk as so many people do.. more on that later. Right now.. we're going straight to the bullets

  • Q started off the game with the Leddy/Hammer pairing which means one of two things. Either he was making a statement like "Get your fucking heads right and play better" or he thinks there's nothing wrong with this pairing that ought to concern anyone. Now, I believe it's the former.. or at least I hope it is.
  • Speaking of Leddy, he was on the ice for the last two of the Wings three goals. The first he served the very important role of being cross-checked in the back by Flippula which allowed the puck to dribble past Crawford and find the net. There's no certainty he would have been able stop it but it was still a pretty nasty missed call. On the OT goal, he served the equally important backboard for Datsyuk to bounce the puck off of. Again, not entirely his fault but he could have taken a much better position in the net rather than guarding the far post. I haven't been able to find a good replay of it to see how much Crawford may have been blocking him but Leddy left about 80% of the net wide open and the replays on TV made it look like the puck went off his hip and into the net. The game wasn't as abysmal as the last one but there is still a lot of room for improvement.
  • Oh and in a sign that even Q may be growing tired of Hammer's shit - Leddy was out there with Montador in OT. Hammer was paired up with Leddy on the first shift in OT but it was Monty on the second. Monty unfortunately was the one who inadvertently kicked the puck just out of Crawford's reach and got too distracted with punching Johan Franzen in the head (forgivable offense) to try to knock the puck away from the slot.
  • Speaking of Franzen.. he was once again pretty damn invisible right up until getting punched in the head and giving Monty one back. He got an assist on the OT goal though so I guess Scum fans will take an invisible mule if it means they get two points on the road... something that doesn't come easy for Scum this year.
  • I guess it would be appropriate to mention the Hawks getting horsed on a couple non-calls by the refs tonight. The aforementioned cross-check on Leddy was the first. There was an interference/too many men that was missed just before the OT goal as well. The Hawks still had 5 power plays to the Wings 2 though. Bad calls are going to be made and blatant penalties will be missed throughout the season. I'm not one who believes "it all evens out in the end" but I do believe that shit happens. The Hawks had 3 power plays and a penalty shot and couldn't do anything with them. That's a bigger story than the missed calls.
  • The Frolik at center experiment lasted all of 15 minutes. Not sure if that's because Frolik wasn't that great at it (1-4 on the draws he did take) or that Q needed to cover for the absence of Patrick Sharp. Not sure why a missing winger would change around the center rotation though.
  • Patrick Sharp is out with "an upper body" which obviously could mean just about anything. NBC showed a few replays of Sharp taking a couple shots to the knee (meaning he can no longer be an adventurer) but if the "upper body" is be believed then it's just about anyone's guess. I didn't notice him taking any particularly hard hits and certainly nothing to the head.. anyone else?
  • It's pretty amazing how much better of a broadcaster Eddie Olczyk is when he's not paired with Pat Foley. When he's not cracking dumb jokes or laughing like an idiot at the same tired jokes he actually has some pretty great things to say. Even his "stop it right here" shtick doesn't seem so grating when he's on top of his game.
  • The Hawks attempted 62 shots tonight 31 were on net, 23 were blocked and 8 simply missed. 23 blocked shots is almost as many as the Flyers and Avalanche totals combined. It did certainly seem like the Hawks were all to willing to help by firing shots directly into the Wings forwards from the point.
  • It'd be pretty easy to panic (if you weren't already) with 4 losses in 5 games but this was far from the Hawks worst game. For the most part, the Hawks defense looked solid. An effort like that against most teams will likely result in two points. So it goes.

Fun game tonight even though it ended on a sour note.

The guy behind me yelling “shoot!” every time the Hawks entered the offensive zone was pretty annoying though.

Was it just me...

…or shouldn’t Franzen have been called for holding the stick on Montador? Montador may have had the stick around Franzen, but it seemed pretty clear to me that horse-face brought his arm down and basically dragged Monte all the way back to the crease.

This!

I’m surprised it didn’t get mentioned in the postgame writeup. In real time, my first reaction was to scream bloody murder that Monty had his stick held blatantly – and for at least 3-5 seconds – while trying to get in position to stop what became the OT goal. It seemed a lot more blatant than the missed too much man call.

You guys are delusional

It was all Leddy’s fault. Now he’s giving up goals on his high glove side, and not getting big in net.

Okay, so the stick was between Franzen's legs, but...

…Franzen still HELD onto Montador’s stick/arm when Montador tried to remove the stick to get back into defensive position.

And I don’t buy the “Montador could be called for tripping”. We see this type of stuff all the time when players along the boards try to ‘draw’ a hooking/obstruction penalty by holding the stick under their arm (Ryan Kesler is a master at this). Yes, the stick might be in a position for a hook/hold/obstruction, but the opposing player can’t deliberately hold the stick if the defending player is trying to retrieve his stick, correct?

Not going to comment on the negatives

Hoping Sharpie doesn’t miss any significant time (I count even one game as significant with this whole Detroit/St. Louis thing). I’m a really big fan of Shaw and Hayes. What sets them apart from a lot of rookies we’ve seen called up is their lack of fear. They’re confident in their abilities, willing to do what it takes to make a play, and as a result, they seem to blend in much quicker. I wouldn’t be able to guess they’re just experiencing their first NHL action by looking at them play.

by Ban on Jan 8, 2012 11:16 PM CST reply actions

I wouldn't mind Sharpie not playing against Columbus

Better than rushing him back in, but after Tuesday, yeah, it could get ugly if he doesn’t come back soon.

I love what Shaw and Hayes have brought to the game. I want to see them stick around, because they’ve looked really good so far, especially Hayes. I would like to see them on the top two lines for a couple of shifts (not the entire game) just to give them a chance to show more of their skill.

What I was really hoping to see last night and didn't because Q decided to move Frolik into the top 6 instead

and thus what I’m really hoping to see tomorrow if Sharpie isn’t good to go is, at least to start the game, give Hayes a shot to play on the wing with Toews and Kane. We saw that line in the 3rd period against the Avs on Friday and while they didn’t dent the twine I thought they looked pretty solid together and created a bunch of opportunities. I know it’s still a ridiculously small sample size, but I really like what I’ve seen out of Jimmy Hayes so far

Frolik

Is a total skitzo offensively. Ever see the movie Finding Nemo? Remember the scene with the Sharks bringing a fish to the meeting? And the one fish is a rattled mess? That’s Frolik in the offensive zone. Just a frazzled mess. He can’t do anything right now. It’s hard to believe this is the same guy that nearly split Schneider in two with his nasty forehand backhand penalty shot.

I think Q is obviously trying to get him going offensively by putting him with Hossa and Sharp, but I also think they are trying to pump his offensive numbers to make him more attractive trade bait. It wouldn’t surprise me if he was one of the first guys they replaced. I like Frolik, but he just isn’t contributing anything in the offensive zone. It’s doesn’t seem to be working.

To think he use to be a 20 goal scorer

While I love his defensive game, just wish he could find the back of the net and he would be a great player. He hustles and plays D great but soon is that going to be enough?

With Bolly in beast mode last night

maybe Frolik off the 3rd line and centering Hossa isn’t such a bad thing? Q often jumps layers up to kick start there game and moving Frolik to the middle should force him to distribute the puck instead of “enter zone, take 40 foot shot.”

Unfortunately in a small sample size last night, he entered the zone and quickly fired off a harmless shot. Maybe Hossa pulls him aside and let’s Frolik know that he now has one of the best possession players on his line to feed that to.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Jan 9, 2012 10:22 AM CST up reply actions

I think Fro at 2C is literally the only option they have right now unless they recall Pirri.

Has Hayes or Shaw played well enough that you can put them on a 3rd line for any length of time?

by HjammerTime on Jan 9, 2012 10:24 AM CST up reply actions

I don’t feel like 3rd line is best suited to Shaw’s game. But he hasn’t been running around out of position to hit everything that moves either, so maybe he’ll be OK. Maybe Pirri will be up, or Q moves Brunette there for now since Stalberg is needed in the top 6. No, I don’t see Hayes or Shaw being able to handle that spot for any length of time.

Shitty to have so many home losses

But overall, I liked the intensity of the game and it wasn’t like the Hawks were blown away by Columbus or something. Plus, after the failed rally for the win against the Leafs, where they outshot them like 2-1 but still lost, you can bet Detroit was going to be much more desperate for the win.

Overall, here was a lot of pressure on both ends, and I’d even give the Hawks a bit of the edge even if it didn’t always result in goals. Despite all the Kane bitching on that OT winner (I need to see a replay but he could’ve covered his own man but with Datsyuk, he’d probably find a way to blast it right through Kane anyways), I thought Kane put good pressure on in the other end and overall, had a good game even though he couldn’t get on the scoresheet.

Their entry into the PP though, oh lord, can they do something apart from dump and chase and then have to backtrack because the other team sent it down the length of the ice? It looked much better this game, but they just can’t get set up or hold onto the puck long enough to make a good solid play.

But in short, loss sucks, some calls (or lack thereof) sucks, but they had 5 PPs, would’ve been nice if they could have cashed in on more than one, but still wasn’t a complete gong show like the Oilers loss and hopefully the next game they’ll all come out in FUCK YOU mode and Kane will finally be out of his scoring slump.

Question on the penalty shot penalty.

When the Scum player puts his hand on the puck in the crease, is the play immediately dead? Did the ref blow his whistle? I’m wondering why the play wasn’t allowed to continue since the puck was still loose. Is it NOT a delayed penalty like a regular penalty? Or is it immediately over since the player touching the puck has “control” over it? Since the puck ended up in the net, it would have been nice to simply get that goal.

Also,

When a defenseman covers the puck in the Crease the Play IS to be immediatley blown dead and a Penalty shot awarded, as happened here.

67.4 Penalty Shot – If a defending player, except a goalkeeper, while play is in progress, falls on the puck, holds the puck, picks up the puck, or gathers the puck into his body or hands from the ice in the goal crease area, the play shall be stopped immediately and a penalty shot shall be awarded to the non-offending team.

As a Side note, NBC PLEASE have your announcers review this rule! Two straight NBC broadcasts you announcers have royally screwed up how they present the “rule” to the audience.

I'm pretty sure last night was the worst NBC broadcast in the history of ever

and that’s saying a lot, being it was NBC. A perfect example was when Seabs got tripped and subsequently nearly killed. To listen to Pierre and Doc go on about “Where did Seabs learn to block shots like that??” – and even after they realized he was tripped, they still kept referring to his “dangerous” shot blocking style.

And don’t forget, “Seabs leads the team in blocked shots” and then in the next breath mention how Hjammer is pretty good at blocking shots too.

by ChicagoNativeSon on Jan 9, 2012 8:44 AM CST up reply actions

I noticed that as well

Its like they wanted everyone to forget seabs got tripped and that he’s brave/stupid enough to try and block it with his face. I have to think edzo was pulling his hair out hearing those comments being he’s the one who pointed out the trip in the first place

The thing that started bothering me

was Emery saying… “And Crawford got just a piece… and Crawford got ANOTHER piece.” I hate to be too neuritic, but it implies that Crawford isn’t actually making a save but he got just a piece and were it not for a lucky deflection off his equipment that was a goal. Find another way to describe a save, please.

I didn’t think it was the worst broadcast in the history of ever. I actually enjoy hearing about the bantor that goes on between the benches and as Kills mentioned, when in front of a national audience Eddie is a lot better a calling a game. His tired shtick and shout-outs are nauseating. The last game he did, he gave a shout-out to the Blackhawks medical staff and I thought I was going to puke.

by Skags on Jan 9, 2012 10:17 AM CST up reply actions

the only chance for a goal there

was the moment when Holmstrom grabbed the puck. as soon as that happen u could see the ref immediately blow the whistle and point for a PS. As soon as the whistle blows anything after that does not matter. The refs and the people in toronto determined the puck did not cross the goal line prior to the whistle(it may have but you couldnt see it with 93’s hand between it and the camera). even though the puck went in about a second after the hand closing, the play was already dead.

by Kissmyanthia on Jan 8, 2012 11:43 PM CST up reply actions

and when the player closes his hand, it cant be a 2 minute PP, the rule forces it to be a penalty shot.

I didn't see the whistle go to the mouth until after the ref got to the net--his hands were still waving off the "post" shot

That’s why I wondered on the call. I didn’t hear a whistle until the puck was in the net. And I recall the pointing for the penalty shot happening after the ref was at the net (and the puck was already in there too).

As soon as the puck was covered

The ref blew the whistle and called for a PS. I think the Ref let the play carry as long as needed and made the right call in stopping the play when he did on the cover.

I would like to see that rule altered somewhat after last night AND the WC, that is the defender is behind the goalie and the puck is moving toward the goal line and the defender covers the puck, it is to be a goal awarded instead of a PS. In both last night and the WC had the defender not fallen or covered the Puck the NYC and Hawks would each have made game changing goals whereas the subsequent PS were stopped. In these situations there is too much too gain by breaking the rules and this needs to be changed. Even at times of “smart” penalties it is a crap shoot, a goal “may have been scored” maybe 50% of the time on smart penalties, but the resulting PP or PS also leads to about a 20-33% scoring chance. On these types of coverings it drastically changes a 100% thing into about a 33% chance. This is too much incentive overall IMO to cover the puck. If the puck would have gone in if NOT for an illegal covering, a goal should be awarded to prevent this.

I agree entirely.

Drawing a parallel to the 2010 World Cup (soccer) where Suarez (Uruguay) used his arm to prevent a sure goal by Ghana. He was red carded but the ensuing penalty shot was missed (and penalties in football are practically a sure thing compared to our hockey version). Either way, there is far too much positive incentive to keep the puck out at all costs. I know I would do it, and I would coach my kids to do so as well until the rule is changed.

by M7 on Jan 9, 2012 10:02 AM CST up reply actions

Someone mentioned on twitter, and im inclined to agree

Hawks d men at the point take just about a week and a half to shoot the puck. Now i know im sounding a lot like those idiots who yell shoot all the time at games, but watching the wings dmen was like watching our dmen in 10x fast forward. Its seems to me that our blueliners like to skate backwards and look for that “perfect” shot rather than just blast away. to me there is a time and a place, but on the power play they need to just blast away imo. giving the PK forwards time to close and block the shot is killing the PP unit.

by Kissmyanthia on Jan 8, 2012 11:40 PM CST reply actions

I agree, but it isn’t just a defenseman issue. What I usually see is that the defensemen for the hawks have to wait to get someone to the front, then shoot, but by then someone is in their way, so they have to move. Detroit is much better at either the timing or having forwards in front at all times. So they just have to focus on shooting around the people coming at them.

Also, the Hawks d-men are somewhat more mobile and probably aren’t as good of shooters, so it would be expected that they would use the skating ability more than Detroits d-men.

by Kev623 on Jan 9, 2012 5:58 AM CST up reply actions

My comment wasn’t really specifically about last night (which seems silly based on this is the recap of last nights game thread). Just a general feeling why I think it looks like the hawks d-men hold on to the puck too long instead of shooting vs why detroit’s d-men just seem to shoot as soon as possible. Also, I think on the power play detroits d-men do move across the blue line a lot as well, but they only really had the 2 minute power play.

Although I didn’t notice too much hawks traffic last night (good presence there though I thought). Lots of bodies in front, but they seemed to mostly be wearing white (at least to me). It seemed like detroit was collapsing hard around conklin. Not sure if it is a worry about rebounds or just a worry that anything that gets to him won’t be stopped strategy.

by Kev623 on Jan 9, 2012 9:24 AM CST up reply actions

I think they're just looking for a lane to shoot in

Detroit was filling the lanes, so they were trying to find a window. I’m actually OK with this, after an entire season of Keith shooting too quickly last year right into a wingers shin guard 8 feet in front him.

by GenPabloSecobar on Jan 9, 2012 9:37 AM CST up reply actions

I understand your reply to Kev623

but there were quite a few times in the 3rd when, IMO, they had Conklin moving and bodies in front and they held on and lined the shot up too deliberately. I felt that if they took the shot quicker with the above scenario, it either would have deflected in or at least a rebound laying there to pounce on. It seemed that Conklin saw pretty much everything coming from the points.

i saw stalberg and kane crashing the net a few times, but

the puck seemed to squirt out behind each time and there wasn’t anyone to pick it up. And I saw some traffic on the PP and such, not as much as CNS saw though, but I probably didn’t notice because it didn’t succeed.

It was just at times

What I saw was traffic in front of the net that was “stacked” along the shooting lane instead of closer to “side-by-side” if that makes any sense?

I’m sure it was just fluky timing that bodies were positioned that way, but no way those shots get through.

On Sharp's injury

The only thing I saw on replays was a slash to his hands on his goal. Don’t know if it was hard, if it did anything or what, but there wasn’t any video of anything after the goal, at least not on VS/Outdoor Network/NBC something-or-other. Anything from the Tweets or Myers?

According to NHL.com

They’re saying it’s likely a wrist injury, such as a fractured bone. Anyone know how long that takes to heal?

by Ban on Jan 8, 2012 11:53 PM CST up reply actions

Too freakin' long.

See if you can guess what I am now.

by IndianHeadCrest on Jan 8, 2012 11:56 PM CST up reply actions

If it's a broken bone in his wrist we're talking a few weeks minimum

and that’s best case scenario, could be longer depending on the exact nature of the injury. Or in other words, I really fucking hope that’s not the case and if it is Stan had better be on the phone with Bob Murray right now determining exactly what it’ll take to get Bobby Ryan or Getzlaf…

Depending on which bones were broken. There are two words you want to be on the lookout for… Fibrous Sheath and Extensor Retinaculum. If there’s any damage to either, we’re in deep shit.

Sharp showed no response to that stick contact on his goal, or high fiving teammates on the bench afterward.
He played all his remaining shifts in the first period. So I’m once again baffled.

It seems to me that Hoss has been getting double teamed a lot in the last few games.

Every time he’s carrying the puck, there are two opposing players on him. He’s been losing the puck a lot on the entry. The Hawks need to find a way to get him some space.

TOI for forwards was

Toews – 24:46
Kane – 23:24
Hossa 20:03
Bolland 16:27

and then the rest were less

Toews vs Kane minutes

IMO – Toews and Kane may play an equal number of minutes, but Toews minutes will always be ‘harder’. He forechecks harder than Kane, plays significant PK minutes and is typically getting mugged going to the front of the net on regular occasions. Take into account the 3 games in 4 nights, and I’ll forgive the captain if he looked a little gassed by the end of the 3rd period…

i don't think anyone is blaming him for being gassed, just wondering if he was JUST gassed (and not injured)

at least on my end. When any of our forwards pick up more minutes – and its generally Kane and Toews – its understandable that they’d be slowing down by the end of the night. Just like when its Keith.

"Well now you're just talking like Foghorn Leghorn!"

by justforkicks on Jan 9, 2012 9:24 AM CST up reply actions

I didn't take anyone's comments as a knock on Toews...

My apologies if I came off that way. I’m constantly amazed by what the captain brings to the table considering the type of game he plays.

For all we hear about the peak conditioning of Duncan Keith and his 30 minutes a night (which is incredible), Keith’s game is still largely about speed, positioning and stick-work. To be clear, this is NOT a knock against Keith. But I look at Toews, who “ONLY” plays 25 minutes a night but is hauling ass the full length of the ice, forechecking like a beast, fighting for and cycling the puck along the boards and regularly getting pounded in the crease by defensemen who have 25-30 pounds on him is nothing short of amazing!!

Note to Hawks

Shoot the damn puck on the neck! Tired of the blocked shots and wide/high shots, especially from Kaner. It’s ok to shoot low sometimes, Kaner.

I thought Franzen got away with a hold on Monty

In the OT, in the corner it looked like Franzen had Monty’s stick and wouldn’t let it go. The the puck got moved to Dats for the goal and it appeared like Monty couldn’t get his stick away from Franzen’s armpit. At the least the ref could’ve whistled both players off the ice, they seemed more concerned with holding one another than playing hockey. sighs.

I still don’t know why Kane chose the moment when Datsyuk had the puck to ignore playing defense. I guess I’m disappointed that it felt like the Hawks left pts. on the table.

Commendable restraint from Q in the post-game

Must have gotten a good warning from the league after his griping following a recent game (Edmonton?).

I didn’t get to watch the game, only saw the nhl.com clips, but I was appalled that Filppula was not called for his shove on Leddy and that Franzen was not called for tugboating Monty across the ice by his stick in OT. The Filppula move reminds me of a very similar one from Detroit a couple years back, can’t remember who, gave one of our D-men a huge crosscheck to give himself all the room in the world to score a key goal late in the third.

The other thing I noticed on the final play was what looked to me like Kane’s near total indifference to playing D. Wow.

That said, from what I can see, an exciting game between two well-matched teams. Envious of those who got to attend.

FIngers crossed for Sharp.

Hey! I take penumbrage at that!

Thoughts on coaching 'restraint'

It’s too bad that Q has to watch his tongue when could have had more that a few gripes about officiating tonite. Given what happened to Tortorella last week after the WC, he doesn’t need to be looking at a 30K fine, but if the NHL is going to protect the officials, it has to be done on ALL levels, including between periods.

We regularly hear stories about Mike Babcock berating refs and linesmen all the way to the officials room between periods. Detroit took five minor penalties (not counting Franzen’s roughing at the end of OT) to the Hawks two, but could have been called for 3-4 more IMO. But I’m sure the officials are well aware of the possibilty of Babcock going ape-shit in the tunnel over the perceived officiating ‘bias’ if the final box score would have read 9 Detroit penalties to Chicago’s 2…

by StopItRightThere on Jan 9, 2012 9:17 AM CST up reply actions

Do you honestly

think the officials couldnt have called more on the hawks? I mean Cmon man Im not saying what is and isnt a penalty but both teams got away with garbage in both games thus far.

by bond021 on Jan 9, 2012 9:26 AM CST up reply actions

Just out of curiosity

If your Montador and Franzen is riding your stick like a bull for almost 20 seconds do you at some point just say ’Fuck it" and let go of the stick?

I know it would have made him slightly less ‘defensive’ (can’t think of a good word right now) but you’d have to think that if he lets go that he doesn’t get pulled down and is either able to better play the puck (kick it away) block the shot from Datsyuk, or even play Datsyuk and force him to pass.

Just a thought.

by BodomSlayer on Jan 9, 2012 2:34 AM CST reply actions

i was thinking the same thing

when the play was going on. he knew that if he tried to yank his stick away, he would get a tripping call, so i think he was trying to get a holding call out of it by staying with his stick. i thought the right move to make was to drop the stick and face the actual shooter, but thats just me.

We played pretty well despite the outcome; please be OK Sharp

Obviously all concern is with Shooter this morning though. Heard Jesse on ESPN 1000 this morning and he said it’s a wrist. Hopefully it isn’t broken or there’s not a sheath tear like Kane had over the summer. A sprain or contusion is what we hope for at this point. Being down any of 19, 88, 81 or 10 would be detrimental, especially when trying to rack up the remaining points on this homestand.

Officiating isn’t something I’d normally comment on but it was truly deplorable tonight. We did receive more powerplays, but it wasn’t just the quality of the calls but the timing. Leddy’s crosscheck to the back and the TMM in OT came at the absolute worst times for missed calls. Had this game gone to a shootout, I firmly believe we come away with two points. Crow vs. Conklin is definitely advantage Blackhawks.

by JesusMarianHossa on Jan 9, 2012 8:35 AM CST reply actions

A shout - out to Crow

he looked more than OK back there, stopped a few shots that a few weeks ago would’ve gone in easily. Regardless of the final score, hope this game gives him some much – needed confidence going forward. And regarding an injury to Sharp, I hope it’s not serious, but most teams have to go through this at least once in a season – better to find out what you’ve really got now rather than in April.

I like Stalberg

I was shocked that he did that to Datsyuk. So seemingly effortless! That was awesome to see. He had a pretty game.

Another play that I remember, he got the puck down low and skated around to the blue line and everyone anticipated he was going to drop the puck of to a defensemen, instead he kept it, and basically had a wide open lane to the net. He got off a real nice shot that I thought was going in.
