Halfway House Pt. 2
I try and keep my promises, so it's time to finish up my half season review. Last time, on Saturday, I went through things that I didn't feel good about with the Hawks. Today, it's time to counter than with what i do like and an overall conclusion.
But before I break out the sunshine and rum drinks, there's one thing I didn't mention about what I think are negatives. I know, leave it to Sam to cram in one more negative in what's supposed to be the positive part (is that a sexual metaphor? I don't even know any more). And that's the third line.
CNS, as is his way, came up with some stats to prove that the third line hasn't been as bad as a lot of us think. That a lot of their stats show they're doing everything but scoring. Well, that's kind of the problem. They're supposed to be scoring, and they're not. Both Bickell and Frolik have been better and more active of late, but still aren't contributing on the scorsheet, and the Hawks need them to. Right now, the Hawks secondary scoring is Viktor Stalberg and....Viktor Stalberg. The Four Horsemen of The Hawk-acolypse can't carry them forever. Secondly, some of the numbers on Bolland, Frolik and Bickell are still ugly. While their quality of competition is certainly the highest, their Behind The Net Ratings are among the worst on the team. Bolland was a plus in this category last year, he's an abysmal -1.48 in this category now. It's not acceptable. And though Homer told us that you can use fact to prove anything that's remotely true, hockey still requires an eye test. Who has watched the third line this year on the ice and been totally happy with what they've seen.
RIght, that's out of the way, on to good stuff, yes?
Obviously, despite the droolers and muttonheads of the masses, two of whom are in the Hawks TV booth telling us that Dan Carcillo is a big reason the Hawks are where they are, the biggest reason is the play of the aforementioned Four Horsemen. While Toews has gotten some Hart attention, there's really no reason Marian Hossa shouldn't be getting just as much. In the top 10 in both points and +/-, except for a little streak here (where he's still put up points), Hossa has been a dominant force on the ice. Toews has carried the teams at times, and they'll need him to do so with Sharp out for however long he's going to be out. Speaking of Sharp, that two-way game we loved for years is back, and it hasn't come at the cost of a ruthless scoring touch. Sadly, it might not be around for a while. And even though he has to dodge trade rumors of the dumb and an ugly scoring slump, Patrick Kane is far from a problem. In fact, you'd think most fanbases would be happy with a winger who's still top 15 in assists. Sure, Kane has set the bar so high in his career we expect more, but the contention that he's been bad or anything like it is such a farce it makes me want to vomit with rage.
While we're at it, I don't like dat Derrick Rose don't score more den 27 per game. You can't win wit' guy like dat! Dey should trade him fer Tony Allen. He's Chicago tough!
Anyway, now with that done, there have been a few surprises. While I have usually been driving the Viktor Stalberg bandwagon, I didn't think I'd see quite this level. Yes, it tends to come against bums or slightly better. Yes, he can still make defensive errors that Dom Deluise should be narrating. But as I said, he constitutes the entire secondary scoring the Hawks have. On pace for 18 goals and 46 points. Who called that before the year?
Another surprise has been the kids. While Leddy remains a concern for me, that doesn't mean his first 41 games, for the most part, weren't more than fine. In fact, it's a shame he was on for the two goals against last night (it was still a fucking crosscheck but whatever I'm trying to grow up), as I thought Leddy was rebounding really well. Aggressive and creative, which is what his game needs to be.
In addition, I think Marcus Kruger has been way better than we all thought. He genuinely earned his time on the 4th line over Hero Ben Smith, and then genuinely earned his promotion to the 2nd line. He may still be light physically, but the IQ, hands, and desire are all in the right place. And getting stronger is just about the easiest thing to fix in a player's career. He's skating again, and could be back soon, and i think we all agree the Hawks need him.
While it's still early, the Hawks have gotten contributions from a couple other kids in Andrew Shaw and Jimmy Hayes (Jimmy Hayes!!). Maybe it's only for five games apiece, maybe it'll be for longer, but how many times last year did anyone come from Rockford and actually provide something for any length of time?
Right, moving on, while we've been sticking heads in ovens and penning suicide notes to Courtney Love about the second pair, it's gone a little unnoticed that the first pair is playing better than it did at any time last year. And that's probably more important than anything.
What else? Well, Jamal Mayers has been everything we could have hoped for, albeit tempered expectations.
Conclusion: Well, it's probably silly to draw conclusions after just 42 games because a lot can happen in the next 40. But as i sit here I can't judge the Hawks as anything other than Cup contenders. There are flaws, but they're fixable. They have a top end that would be the envy of every team in the league save...maybe Vancouver? They've gotten where they are even with awful goaltending, and that will improve. The special teams have been brutal, but I don't think that will continue forever either. Remember in 2010 the PP couldn't get unfucked either until it really mattered, then it was a Doomsday Device.
Basically, all of the things that plague the Hawks are either fixable via a small trade, players not quite living up to their career norms, or units that have too much talent to wallow where they are. Simple law of averages tell you those things correct themselves.
Also, as I look over the West I don't see anyone the Hawks can't take. You've seen the Wings twice now, and even with their win last night most Wings fans would admit that's the slowest Wings team since Nevermind was released. I just don't see them coping with the Hawks over seven games or less. The Sharks? Meh. As big as they are they don't impose themselves much and that defense still has major questions.
L.A. scares me a bit, but you have to score more than twice per game, if the Kings can manage that. St. Louis would be absolute torture in a series, but without any premier scoring talent I still wonder how far they can go. I'll wonder even more when that Brian Elliot Bubble bursts.
Vancouver's still scary, but if you're tossing out Keith Ballard and Kevin Bieksa for regular shifts, you're never a guarantee.
Anyway, that's how I see it.

Kruger and Jimmy Hayes
One with a much larger sample size than the other but they’ve been my favorite surprises of the season. As you said, Kruger had that 2nd line humming with Sharp and Hossa on his wings. Probably a lot more to do with those 2, but we still haven’t been able to stick anyone else between there and make it work. He’s starting to become just as good defensively as Bolland, too.
Jimmy Hayes… I know it’s just a handful of games but I really like this kid. He plays within himself. Doesn’t commit the big turnover. He’s physical on the boards and more often than not I see lines with him on it sustaining some of the best forechecks in the last few games. He’s earned some staying power. Even after all the injuries shake out, he should probably still be here.
Toews and Hossa I don’t really need to say much about. They’ve been fantastic and without them we’d be up shit’s creek.

Well your first problem was reading anything from bleacher report...
but in the defense of whoever wrote that specific article (which I read because you linked it and my eyes were just begging for some torture) – nowhere in that article does he seem to be advocating trading Kane to get Miller. He’s advocating dangling Stalberg, Bickell, or Frolik and a fair amount of the prospect pipeline in Rockford to get Miller from the Sabres. Now if Miller could be had for Frolik and a couple of prospects I’d be thrilled for Stan to make that deal, but does anyone really think Miller would be so cheap?

perhaps...
I do think that the current team is built for playoff hockey, not the regular season. Even a guy like Crawford may suffice even if he isn’t going to do us any favors.
In any regard, I’m okay with these point droughts. The team is probably tinkering with their team approach to the game as we speak, so I’m not expecting much from them for the next week or two. The list of things that needed to get worked on was pretty steep for a team with this much talent, but such is life in an 82 game schedule.
"I do think that the current team is built for playoff hockey"
My only concern is that in the playoffs the top lines usually even out against the other top lines. (Remember the Finals against Philly? No points from Tazer and company for a while.) Our secondary scoring HAS to pick up if we expect to go far. And tighten up the defensive coverage!
Do you ever have dejavu?
Didn't you just ask me that?
we have more secondary scoring than most teams. Only Boston and Philly are deeper than we are when it comes to scoring past the top two lines. That’s a fact.
But didn't Sam say that we only have Stals scoring?
I always believe what Sam says….
Do you ever have dejavu?
Didn't you just ask me that?
Sam is a homer. :p
But I should clarify my initial claim. Only two teams are without a doubt deeper than the Hawks (past the top two lines). Pittsburgh would definitely trump us once and if Crosby returns. There are 4-5 other teams that are arguably as deep as the Hawks.
The team had major issues for a period of weeks when Bolland returned from injury, but should be okay in the long run.
yeah Salak
kidding, the cupboard’s bare pretty much right now.
CNS got a nice call-out by Fels, but I think it’s Fels that doesn’t get what ails us. The problem isn’t that the third line isn’t scoring (name me 4 teams who’s 3rd line has been marginally more effective than ours), it’s that the rest of the team’s lines aren’t defending as well as we need them to coupled with spotty goaltending.
There’s a reason why the highest point getters in the league (the Rangers) are killing it right now and it’s not because of their 3rd line scoring (which they’re getting virtually zero of). They play a strong overall game that includes great goaltending by Lundy + two good scoring lines complimented by two other strong defensive-minded lines.
I’m pretty sick of the mindset that’s offensecentric at this point. More scoring won’t solve our issues as much as tightening up the screws on our team defense + goaltending.
by aeroplane on Jan 9, 2012 3:42 PM CST reply actions 3 recs
then you're saying it's really just a case of will/committment right now
which makes sense to me.
I'll go along with that too
The 3rd line does need to score more, but my sense is that with some more tinkering and with some help from the ebbs and tides of Bolland’s internal clock, it’ll eventually get back there. And I’m assuming Stan will use some of the cap room to prop up the D (though my own concern is more the third pair than the goaltending). But the commitment to team defense thing gnaws, because that is all up to the players.
Hey! I take penumbrage at that!

(OK, that sounds a bit creepier than I meant it to be.)
I don’t know how it all works with rookie contracts and the cap and all that, but if we could give Hayes 3 or 4 more games I wonder how he’d do. We may have to with the injury bug, but the kid is playing like he wants to stay on the big club. There’s a desperation to his play that only comes from the new kids, and he’s bringing a lot to this team.
I’m fearful that they’ll start a parade of Rockford players in order to keep the kids under 10 games. But Hayes should get a serious shot at staying here. He’s not the second coming of Gretzky or anything, but he’s contributing regularly and well.
Do you ever have dejavu?
Didn't you just ask me that?
the 10 games thing
only applies to 18 or 19 year olds in the first year of their pro contracts. Hayes is 22, and he’s already started his Entry Level Contract this year. So we can use and abuse him as much as we want.

but was hoping against hope that I’d be wrong – could not be happier with the outcome.
Come on Stan.
Call Rutherford and make a deal. There are several teams looking to make deals right now according to several reports ( some reputable, some not so much) surely there is a deal out there that you can make that will improve this team.
Respectfully,

No worries, this was the plan all along!
SCH resident medicinal resource
OK so play GM here
what kind of deal do you think is out there? There’s always a ton of speculation, most of it coming from player’s agents (and moronic hockey commentators) trying to gin something up that’s usually complete and utter BS. So what’s your sense of the kind of deal that’s actually doable?
Carolina is certainly the most logical trading partner right now.
You could imagine all sorts of scenarios involving Gleson, Ruttu or both.
I do stuff for CheerTheAnthem
You could even talk Jokinen
I don’t think left wing is out of the picture if the right player came along.
I do stuff for CheerTheAnthem
I think that
Allen or Gleason could be brought in. Gleason more so at the moment as Allen has a NTC.
Thankfully I am not a GM so I don’t know exactly how much work, wheeling, and dealing goes in to making a deal come out so everyone is happy (at that moment). Certainly it would be much more difficult if you are trying to get a deal done for a member of the RPG line or a similar caliber player, but I do feel that there are 2nd and 3rd tier players out there that deals could potentially be worked out with.
While no one is perfect I do like to think that over the 30+ years of following hockey that I have a decent idea of which reporters are full of shit, trying to drum up a controversy, or just cranking the rumor mill.
I mean come on, everyone can’t be as spot on with their “reporting” as the Bleacher Report

I'd take Ruttu in a heartbeat
liked him a lot when he played here, but I don’t know if that would solve the underlying issues of scoring on the bottom two lines.
Ruutu's a wrecker on the forecheck
but call me unconvinced to exactly how much offense he’d provide. I’ve always found him to be frustratingly unpolished in close when it matters.
To contradict my own statement though… I’m not sure there are many polished finishers out there that can be had without gifting the farm. So in that sense, I’m ok with Ruutu as he theoretically should give us an added dimension (thereby making the team harder to play against). Still don’t think we’ll see a lot of O from him though.
You are next.

that team deliberately went after him as soon as the 1st shift started, and succeeded in giving him another concussion. Dirty crap all around.
Everyone take a deep breath.
It’s been a rough couple of weeks, and it will be a couple more rough weeks with all the injuries, but everything will be okay. Playoff runs are not made or broken on mid season slumps, particularly when the team is banged up.
Yes, I’d like to see a little more fire and a brilliant roster move or two from Stan the man, but I’ll settle for more of the effort they showed against scum. Play like that every game and you’ll win seven out of ten, even against the very good teams.
And the Hawks are still a very good team. They will put it together.

I like te conclusion
While the hawks have problems, no one else in the league has the talent they have on the top line and the top D pair.
Not one team this year is perfect. Boston still has head up ass issues, but they might be the best but i still dont trust their level of competetion. they sure do see a lot of montreal NJ TB NYI and Carolina.
The west is just so much better than the east this year.
if one was to dole out the title of perfection...
Boston would be the clear winner. Two of the best goalies in the world. Three lines that are explosive and dangerous and a defensive core that’s quite good. Their top 6 defenders all average over 15 minutes per game, which should help with keeping the team fresh over the long-haul.
Teams that could be matches
Tampa Bay:

Marc-Andre Bergeron ( 1 mil cap hit 2 years left)
Carolina:
Tim Gleason (UFA)
Tuomo Ruutu (UFA)
Anaheim:

Bobby Ryan

New Jersey:
Zach Parise
New York (Islanders)
