Not Finding The Droids I'm Looking For
Yeah, more pop culture references. We tried to get away, but you can't run from who you are.
Anyway, I felt like complaining and swearing, so I have a grab bag of assorted thoughts and things that are kind of burning my ass right now.
Look people, a crazy man is yelling!
-I'm beginning to think Pat Foley actually is the guy in the section next to mine who owns a Scott and Carcillo jersey and yells the biggest meatball shit in the world. Has a game gone by where Foley hasn't mentioned the hit stats on the team or player in the past month? He wasn't alone last night, as Adam Jahns and others got in the act on Twitter.
Let's ignore that the tallying of these things vary wildly from arena to arena. I get it, the Hawks get outhit in almost every game. Meanwhile, while these wildabeests are getting into a fine lather and froth about what a bunch of pansies the Hawks are, last night they were providing a perfect example of how they can have the best of a hockey game without trying to pulverize everything that's in the other color. And that's on defense too.
The Hawks used the amount of speed they have to basically squeeze the Canucks on the backcheck into their defense waiting on the blue line. As McClure mentioned last night, the Canucks do kind of play into the Hawks' hands because they like to carry the puck into the zone with speed. But against a lot of teams, when the Hawks are as determined to work that hard in their own end, they gobble up space for other teams to make plays. They don't have to run around making boards rattle when they can do it with their feet and then make a play with their hands.
Would I like the Hawks to be a little bigger and a little nastier? Of course. Do I need them to be the Blues? No, I don't. There are different ways to win a hockey game. The Hawks showed you how they can do it best last night. Yes, smart guy, I know they didn't win last night. And if every goalie the Hawks play from here on out is as good as Schneider was last night, they'll probably lose a lot. You'd get pretty nice odds on that.
-Not every play that happens during a game warrants yet another trade suggestion. This is getting ridiculous. It seems like with any turnover, that guy's gotta go for this guy. Good god. It is most likely that the guy the Hawks bring in to shore up the defense will not be a name that will set your balls on fire. It'll be just the right sized piece to fill the hole(s) the Hawks have (by crackee!). That name doesn't change with the score.
-Ah, the John Scott rant. I won't go in depth on this one, because I don't need to. By now, everyone has seen through the protection argument. What last night was Q being pissed off at Sean O'Donnell's performance against Nashville and benching him for it. And it was Q deciding that dressing no one was better than dressing Sami Lepisto. And make no mistake, when he plays Scott, he's playing no one, because 5 minutes of time does not constitute an actual human. Was Lepisto so bad that he's worse than an empty slot? If Quenneville thinks so, then he might as well have stuck with O.D. If he's trying to make a point to his GM, that point has already been well made.
-I decided to have some fun with numbers because I'm a huge loser. The Hawks are spending $36k or so for every goal from Viktor Stalberg. They're getting goals from Captain Marvel at a rate of $138K per. Kane's come in at 338K. League leader Steven Stamkos is about the same as Toews. Obviously, this is a stupid way to measure things, the only point I'm trying to make is just how much the Hawks are getting from Stalberg for his contract and expectations. This was the goal and point total I expected from him for 82 games, not 51. While the bile for him probably isn't as high as I think it is in my twisted little mind, I just wish more people would pay attention to what Rattlehead is instead of isn't. And last night, he was the best player on the ice. For either team, and I've got emails from some Canucks bloggers who wholeheartedly agree with that.
-In the time Patrick Sharp missed, the Hawks scored six power play goals in eight games. They came from both units. That's not a revolutionary rate, but it's hardly bad either. They did it with two d-men on each unit, both playing the point, if you can believe that. It had Dave Bolland floating from combining on the goal line with Andrew Brunette to the high slot. So did Toews. So why when Sharp comes back from injury does Bolland go back to the point and Sharp return to the point as well?
Ok, think I'm done now.

I think we've reached internet petition stage of forwards on the PP point
I’ll start it if y’all will sign it. I can’t handle wasting a forward up there any more.
I saw your comments with Jahns last night too. His sample size of a period and a half for judging the 3rd line as being unconscionable come playoff time was unusual. He’s much more savvy than that normally. Credit to him for conceding the point a little though. Kuc or Sassone would tell you the sky was yellow just to fit their narrative.
by JesusMarianHossa on Feb 1, 2012 3:25 PM CST reply actions
Sam's reaction to that was odd to me
given that he wrote in the pregame that their lack of size was a bit of a concern to him. It is concerning – we’ve seen what’s happened to small-ish Leddy as teams figured out how to rattle him. So is the fact that they’re 20 and 21 and lacking playoff experience. I didn’t think Jahns’ comments were that shocking. Small sample size goes both ways. And I like both Shaw and Kruger a lot, I just don’t know if they’re the answer to that line come April. A season or two from now, I’m much less worried.
Remind me again
Who is this Sami Lepisto character you speak of? Sighs.
I think it’s past time Bowman acquiesce to dealing a little bit too much of his prospects/picks to get that difference making stay-at-home d-man that can share minutes.
He added a depth forward, now he needs to add that depth d-man. The closer he waits to the deadline the costlier that price tag will be.
Come again?
so Stan panics now and gives away some prospects, all for a middling D – Man? And even at that, perhaps just a rental? No, I don’t think so – he has a team that’s fighting for 1st place right now, he’s not dealing from a position of weakness, far from it. He’s also shown that he knows when to deal and when to hold, and unless someone comes in with a reasonable offer he can just sit back and watch the idiots jump off the ledge and give away the store.
It's not panic
that would be waiting till the deadline and overpaying for said middling d-man.
I wasn’t suggesting nor did I think anyone that’s interested would suggest the Hawks need a “middling” d-man.
There are plenty of quality stay-at-home d-men. And overpaying might just mean including a draft pick with a prospect as opposed to trading prospects to get a d-man.
For 2 yrs. now they’ve had a need for a stay at home d-man, and for 2 yrs. now they’ve mixed and matched pieces, why not go and get someone that fills that need. I’m sure Bowman is working the wires, I just don’t want him stuck settling for what’s left over.
Fine, I'll bite
who are these quality stay-at-home d that are readily and openly available?

That's beautiful.
Many hilarity. Laughing out loud right here.
General miscreant, ne'er do well and hockey dilettante. Not to be trusted or believed under any circumstances.
Readily is subjective
I admit I have no inside knowledge as to what names are available, just a wish list of sorts of the kind of d-man I think would fit the bill.
I suppose it’s as assumption to think or believe that Bowman wouldn’t pull the trigger if there’s a name out there available that fits the bill, but it’s been suggested by those in the media that Bowman might want something more or different than just a stay-at-home d-man.
That’s fine, I just think there’s been a need for a d-man that can play the stay-at-home role and eat some minutes, as opposed to trotting out SOD nightly; J.Scott for 5 minutes taxing the rest of the corps; or not dressing S. Lepisto.
So the Hawks need a d-man?
Obviously. But saying the longer Bowman waits, the higher the price tag goes up is simply wrong.

how do you figure?
Supply and demand. Other contenders in need of similar assets won’t drive the price up?
No one is going to drive the price up to astronomical proportions
And the buyers know the sellers don’t want to end up stuck paying contracts that they don’t have to.
So it basically turns into the sellers having to choose between whose shit smells better.

Additionally, the value to the acquiring team becomes lower, as there are few games for their new player to make a difference in.

It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a goddamn shame
I'm not sure I agree with that
What happens if the acquired player isn’t on an expiring deal?
Or simply not just a rent-a-player.
That does affect it, yes, but the initial cost for that type of deal is higher to begin with. The fact remains that there’s still less time on a deal any way you slice it.
Second City Hockey
It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a goddamn shame
I guess it depends on your idea of steep
I don’t think any of the sellers are expecting bad contracts in return. At least not in any scenario where they are providing a team with that proverbial last piece of the puzzle.
Last year Campoli cost a second round pick.
This year GM’s are reportedly asking for 2 first round picks for some of these guys. I agree with FF John, the market for the UFA’s has to go down or the original teams risk not getting anything for them.
I think you misunderstood my first point
For instance, the Carolina Hurricanes don’t want to have to pay Tuomo Ruutu’s contract through the end of the season. Buying teams know this. So the Hurricanes will either have to settle for whatever teams are offering at the deadline or be stuck with Ruutu.
FifthFeather.com
by El Duque's Raft on Feb 1, 2012 4:16 PM CST up reply actions
Ok yeah I misunderstood.
Carolina is obviously peddling Ruutu to several teams if you believe the rumor mill: Ottawa, Detroit, Chicago.
Yes, they ultimately will settle for the “best” offer or get stuck with Ruutu and probably lose him in free agency.
It's about relative changes in supply and demand
The price may go up, it may go down, it may stay about the same.
Functional SCH Addict
Why are we worried about trading away a couple of prospects?
Especially forwards. 4 of our top 6 forwards aren’t going anywhere. 4th liners are generally available at reasonable salaries. What I worry about is that these “prospects” never get to play on the big club and when they do, they are put in roles they weren’t really drafted to play.
Still not sure what's going on w/Lepistö...
Granted, he could be insurance for the playoffs, but how much rust are they going to let him collect on the bench?
I can see the train of logic of putting Scott on the ice in light of Toews/Sharp’s known injuries; as illustrated by the writers over at a Canucks blog calling for intentional slashes to them. However, Lepistö played an average 15 min TOI vs VAN over the last 2 games vs the Canucks; he was +3 in those games, and wasn’t on the ice for a single goal against in that ghastly 11/6 game. Huh, so sit a guy who plays good D against the Canucks in favor of the guy who got just 5 min TOI and then see Keith break the 30 minute mark. Think it’s been proven that the Hawks play their best when Keith’s time is down in the low 20s.
Guy can’t be trade bait if he’s sitting in the press box collecting dust; but the Blackhawks aren’t going to risk losing any viable players to waivers (e.g., Bickell, Frolik, Lepistö) w/o a return, either. If Lepistö wants ice time, then he’s got to show the desire for it in practice, because he’s not getting the opportunity to show it in games. John & Troy said it well in a post-game show on WGN recently: none of the Blackhawks’ 6th D-men are exactly showing they’re eager to grab the job with both hands and run with it. When one of them does, that’s who we’ll see – or, if Stan can somehow obtain one of these mythical physical, stay-at-home defensemen that people seem to think are just growing on trees out there for the plucking.

I think a lot of his problems would be solved by asking his partner to take his talents full – time over to VS. The change would do both of them a world of good, they’re much better when not working with each other these days.

I've never lived outside the area
so I can’t say what other teams announcers sound like but that won’t stop me from throwing out an unsubstantiated blanket statement:
This town’s teams hold on to announcers far too long just because they’re “fan favorites.”

While I'm not defending Foley . . .
. . . you have to remember that he works for the Blackhawks and is not supposed to be some hard-hitting journalist. And the “hit ’em” meatball stance has always been marketing 101 for the NHL unfortunately. Still, as he has watched decades of hockey, you would expect more insight into the game and the Hawks than he provides. We expect more than “there’s tree turty tree” left in the period.
That's a good point
and in fact, if I recall correctly a large part of the reason Dollar Bill whacked him was because he was too critical of the team. I realize he works for the Hawks and he’s going to be a bit meatballish if it helps promote the team and increase ratings. However, my biggest problems with him are when he goes off on some stupid five minute story while the game is in full swing and of course his schtick with Edzo.
Thank you, sir! May I have another?
just another example of how Twitter makes you stupid
it’s like a stream of consciousness thing for some folks, those who speak often before thinking, a bad combo for the meatheads out there. For those of a similar bent it’s a veritable cornucopia of Tourette’s Syndrome.
When properly used, it's quite the informational tool
But yeah, there are some folks that should consider what they say. I usually put disclaimers out before certain games that I’m probably going to be uncivil for the next 3 hours. Last night was one such occasion. Trolled the Vancouver folks for the first two periods. Even us stat folks need to bathe in au jus every once in a while. By the third period, I’d settled in to watching, enjoying and analyzing a great hockey game.

What's this have to do with anything?
The $32K per goal (last year) has nothing to do with the criticism of Bickell, which was and remains the fact that he doesn’t play to his size, as often as we like. I think at the end of the year everyone was pleased with his production. This year, not only is not playing to his size, he’s not producing. He’s basically become Jake Dowell. So he sits. Too bad, cause I loved me some 3rd line of Bo, Fro, Bick.
What am I missing re: Stals? He was one of the best players on the ice, and regardless of how or why, his turnover at the blue line led to a goal the other way, there was some groaning among in the GDT about that play, but mostly people giving hims props for a well deserved star of the game.
That may be the public's criticism of Bickell
but Q’s criticism is about defensive lapses.
I"ve noticed Bickell do fly byes on defense . . .

Sam joked about how he might be a just a tad protective of Stals. He’s got his psychosis about certain players, I’ve got mine.
People out there, Foley for example, are criticizing Stals because, as a big guy, he’s not “HITTING SOMEBODY!” even though he is scoring. Seems stupid right?
Yet, in regards to a checking line player (who shouldn’t go out of position to make “unnecessary” hits, but was still 2nd on the team) you write:
The $32K per goal (last year) has nothing to do with the criticism of Bickell, which was and remains the fact that he doesn’t play to his size

And FYI
Only Mayers averages fewer minutes this year than Bickell, but even Mayers has played 10 more games.
Yet who’s the team leader among forwards in hits?
So maybe it’s not that Bickell doesn’t play to his size. Maybe it’s simply because he’s not producing, despite the pleas of “Hit somebody!” Q found lightning in a bottle with Shaw and Hayes instead. Two young guys willing to not only lay some hits, but who have also been able to dent twine. Kind of like Bickell last season, no? (the #BickellFacts last season were hilarious, btw)
There is no room for Bickell on this team with the way Shaw is playing. The only way he works his way back into the lineup is if someone cools down. If that means Bickell doesn’t play again because Shaw doesn’t slow his roll, I’ll be as happy as anyone to see that. But I doubt, in general*, it’s because he’s not playing to his size. (*once moved to the 4th line he hasn’t picked up the physicality, but that was after he lost his slot on the 3rd line and fell into the doghouse)

It’s disappeared for the better part of this season. You know just as well as any of us that hits is a flawed stat. Physical or not, Bryan Bickell has been a tremendous disappointment in terms of contributing secondary scoring after showing he was quite capable in doing so last year. Combined with the penalties this season, he’s taking away more than he’s adding.

And I think I need to remind myself others that I picked Bickell this summer as this year’s disappointment and said he would get dropped to the 4th line. Because Niemi was not going to get what he was asking for after 1 season in the NHL
And he did not. His current SPC came after he also continued to play well into his 2nd campaign, that is when he starte to recieve the bigger $$$.
Even after the SCF, Niemi was young and relativley inexperienced with not much track record. His asking price was over his value AT THAT TIME and his agent new on top of this it was above what the Hawks could afford. The Hawks offered $1.5-$2.0M, Niemi was asking 2x’s that. In the end he ended up getting pretty much the Hawks offered a 1yr $2M deal with SJS. Niemi was established, liked, new the system being played with the Hawks and the Hawks were the defending Champs, but he was being marketted out of range and this lead to his departure.

You say
The Hawks offered $1.5-$2.0M, Niemi was asking 2x’s that. In the end he ended up getting pretty much the Hawks offered a 1yr $2M deal with SJS.
So basically Niemi’s agent got him the max contract he could expect after one year. I question if the Hawks offered 2 million, based on the Hjalmarsson deal and how close to the cap they were with only 1.3 million to Turco, but I don’t know one way or the other. But he did move him to a team that had a GM who believed in a pay a goalie mentality as opposed to the Bowman system of any solid goalie will do and then got a contract extension that pays him well. And it was a contending team.
But what exactly did his agent do wrong again? He got him the most money, kept him on a winning team and put him in position to get a nice raise. I’m guessing Niemi is pretty well liked in SJ now as well.
I also doubt that his agent was acting alone and Niemi was completely innocent in the entire thing. I somehow doubt his agent never gave him the decision to sign in Chicago but if he wanted the top paying contract he was going to need to relocate. If he didn’t, then fine he’s a doucebag. Otherwise, he just did his job and actually did it pretty well.
His agent DID NOT get him the most or even more money!!!
Niemi made very little if ANY more money playing last year for SJS over what Chicago was willing to pay.
Niemi’s new deal only kicked in this year, an option the Hawks could have also done after last season started! For the same time frame the Hawks offered for a deal (1-2yr @ ~$2M) he got with the Sharks. Just like the Sharks signed him to an extension during the Season last year, the Hawks could have done the same and I am willing to bet for probably about the same amount. If Niemi is signed in July 2010, a couple of the late UFAs the Hawks pick up after that change to meet the Cap.
His agent over played Niemi’s hand (Niemi is a new guy to all this, his agent is not) In the end he did NOT get him anymore money and caused him to leave a very good and stable situation in Chicago to a new shakier situation in SJS who just cut ties with their franchise Goalie, a shaky defense, among other issues.
Niemi is not blameless, but his agent has the experience and he overplayed the SC. The Hawks were more in line with his market value (which is what he ended up signing for on another team) his agent over priced.

How can you say the Hawks offered 1.5 – 2.0 million and his contract was 2 million in SJ and say the Hawks offered more? They didn’t and they probably offered less. Sure the Hawks could’ve offered a multi-year deal, my guess is they didn’t because Niemi would’ve wanted more money as the deal progressed and they needed the cap hit to be as small as possible last year. Add in the extension for this year and there was little to no real way the hawks offered as much for a one year or over a two year period (5.2 million is what he made over those two years). So explain how he didn’t get more money in SJ with his 2 million deal last year and his current deal? The best case is the hawks offer equally as much, but the most likely case is they would offer less.
The reason I get upset at people calling his agent stupid or a doucebag is because he did gamble and got “luckly” with the SJ signing. Or maybe he correctly estimated the market value of his client and got him that deal because he does know what he’s doing and his client has faith that he could prove to be the type of goalie he is in any situation.
I somehow doubt Niemi’s agent didn’t give him the choice between most money, stay with Chicago, or most money on a contending team. I don’t care how new to the process you are that is an understandable choice. If Niemi felt screwed by his agent, he wouldn’t have let him negotiate the new deal. His agent did what he wanted and he did it well.
Well,
So explain how he didn’t get more money in SJ with his 2 million deal last year and his current deal?
Because for starters his current deal is irrelevant to the time of his departure. It had not happened and Niemi had not proven he was the real deal. Exactly what the Hawks offered I can’t find but ~$2M is the number I keep finding in reports ($1.5M low a few slightly over $2M). SJS was a risk, much more then most saw sticking with the Hawks to be at the time.
Any extension that happened after Game 1 last season is mute, since the Hawks has as much flexability in doing the same thing. My argument is the 1yr $2M deal and bringing the Hawks to arbitration. His agent was a douche. As you state he gambled, and got lucky! He had the real deal with all the knowns and certainties in Chicago, he rolled the dice instead, this makes his agent IMO dumb. Neimi would have quickly gotten a long term deal as soon as the Hawks could do it, just July was not the time they could. If Niemi has a regressive season last year or SJS other new (bigger) pieces fail, they would be in rebuild or regression mode right now, and Niemi loses big, if he had stayed in Chicago he still wins since he probably had deal in hand before that was realized.
by Toews-makes-funny-faces on Feb 2, 2012 8:31 AM CST up reply actions
I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree, because I see no way he gets the deal he got in SJ with Chicago. Both the 2 million and the extension. The extension isn’t a Bowman like contract for a goalie and they had Crawford in the wings. Also, I don’t think SJ was that much of a risk, but getting a contract from a SJ was a risk as most teams had found their starting goalies, even SJ.
If Niemi had a regressive season last year he was screwed either way. I don’t think the Hawks wouldn’t have paid him and signed an extension just because he had previously won the cup. Which is why it made sense to me to get as much money as possible.
Seriously there are people still criticizing Niemi's agent?
You’ve got to be kidding. Niemi’s agent went to arbitration for his client. I would fire any agent that didn’t do that when he could. The award for Niemi was TOTALLY in the range of what the Hawks ACTUALLY GAVE Crawford after the same amount of time in the NHL.
If the offer sheet didn’t show up, Niemi would have gotten his money, Hjammer would have gotten considerably less money and the Hawks would have had both players. It is NOT Niemi’s agents fault that Wilson gave an offer sheet.
was waiting until someone pointed this out
DW was the douchebag in this scenario, I’m still hoping the Hawks remember his little breach of GM etiquette when the time comes and really put the hammer to him.
Wilson left Chicago on bad terms
and remains somewhat bitter to this day. But that doesn’t mean he’s a douchbag in this scenario. He saw an opportunity to get a goalie he thought would help his team, and he took it. He broke no rules. Knowing he was screwing the Hawks must have made it sweeter for him, but I don’t think that was his primary motive.
by Gate3anuhHalf on Feb 2, 2012 10:28 AM CST via mobile up reply actions
What he did was legal
but you don’t see that type of scenario often played out these days. And almost every former Hawk left under bad terms, they had to labor under Dollar Bill – so as for that being the underlying reason, forgettaboutit.
I guess I had left this out because once Hjammer got offer sheeted, Niemi’s agent knew (or at least I hope knew) arbitration was a ticket out of town, but he continued on that path.
The decision he made at that point is what I have felt TMFF and I were discussing. But yes the offer sheet is what led to the final decision.
What choice does he have at that point?
Hawks are going to choose between the two of them. If the Hawks choose Niemi he is going to get his arbitration award.
If the Hawks choose Hjammer, do you really expect Niemi’s agent to go to his client and say “you need to sign for half your value this year?”
Sure you are going to lose value if you get rejected after arbitration. At that time the UFA market has dried up. However, it doesn’t dry up enough for Niemi to only get half his original value.
Niemi’s agent did everything right for his client and it worked out alright for Niemi.
Woohoo I get to argue both sides of the same argument in the same thread.
No actually I agree, but there are plenty of people, and TMFF seems to be one of them, that would claim signing for what the Hawks offered was his best option. Or at least seem to feel the Hawks offered more than probably you or I think they did. The Hawks offer is where the divide comes from IMO. If the Hawks offered 2 million before arbitration and his agent rejected it, then I do think it was a big gamble, but I just don’t think the Hawks offered that much and his agent was fairly confident he could get around that number as a FA.
That is where people are wrong.
After the Hawks reject the arbitration award, the Hawks could still sign Niemi if the offer to Niemi is bellow a percentage of the arbitration award. Off the top of my head that was 10% less.
Anyway 2M is way below the threshold. So the Hawks could have signed Niemi for that 2M if they wanted to. Since they chose NOT to, all of those arguments you are now making are irrelevant.
As for “pre-offer,” the Hawks knew the market for Niemi since I knew the market for Niemi. Just look at what Halak and Price were getting. Niemi didn’t have as much experience but he had a ring. So that 2.5 to 2.7 range is what anyone should have expected Niemi to get. He wasn’t going to sign for 2M before the offer-sheet.
BTW, It is actually ironic that Niemi eventually did sign with SJ since Wilson cost him 700K for the year.
Wrong,
Once the arbitrator has rendered his descision THAT is the number both the player and team must sign too, nothing more nothing less. In no case may the arbitrator reward for less than 85% of the previous years salary. If either party (who can) reject the descion the RFA becomes a full UFA free to negotiate with any team for any contract. Descisons to reject the arbitration must be done with 48 hours of the descision.
Up until the arbitrator made his descision Niemi could have signed for whatever amount (within CBA guidleines), but once he said $2.75M, this was the set number if he was going to play for the Hawks. If the arbitration award is rejected, that player and team may not negotiate until the conclussion of the following season or that players next SPC expires.
by Toews-makes-funny-faces on Feb 2, 2012 11:48 AM CST up reply actions
Where do you see that they cannot negotiate until the next season? I don’t read that anywhere in Section 12, it only says that the player becomes a FA. (Also, I do not see the 10% or less part either.) I didn’t see a special group in section 10 either, but I only read the CBA when I need to go to sleep anyways.
I would think as a FA he could sign with anyone including the Hawks, but they just lost their ability to be the only team to negotiate with him. The general idea being UFAs get more money than RFAs so you wouldn’t be able to walk away and sign him for less, but the timing and the cap sort of screws that up.
Will have to get back to you on this
I cannot pull up the CBA .txt on this PC at work, used NHL FAQ and other hockey sites info on the current CBA arbitration to pull this info together. If it is wrong I stand corrected, but I want to see before I admit I am dorked up.
by Toews-makes-funny-faces on Feb 2, 2012 12:16 PM CST up reply actions
Walk away players
Is a RFA level free agent for any offer below 80% of the award And is an UFA for anything above that.
Don’t remember ever reading anything that says once the team was walked away, they couldn’t renegotiate. However, at that point you have had all kinds of time to sign and the player hasn’t. So unless you take the arbitration award, don’t see the original team signing him as an UFA.
You reall want to argue with me on the CBA? :)
If the player accepts an offer from a
New Club in respect of that year of the contract which the Prior Club has walked-away from that is less than 80% of the award for such year, the Prior Club may, within seven (7) days after the
date it receives the applicable Offer Sheet, elect to match the offer of the New Club and the Player and the Prior Club shall enter into a Player Contract on those terms and conditions;
Since the offer from SJ was 72% of the award, the Hawks could have matched that offer and kept Niemi.
Awesome to know
And why the Hawks did not jump, unless by that time they had already given up and spent what little cushion they had on other UFAs and could not.

What SB said.
When Bowman said that Niemi and Hjammer weren’t going anywhere, I think he believed that to be true.
I think he had Niemi budgeted in the 2.6-7 range and Hjammer in the 1.7-2.2 range. So 4.9 tops.
When the offer sheet happened and Hjammer came in at 3.5, you only had 1.3 to reach the top end of the budget. Voila, Turco.
The combination of Toews winning MVP and the offer sheet cost the Hawks Niemi. Actually, if Toews hadn’t won the Conn Smythe, I don’t think there would have been an offer sheet.
So moral of the story, it’s all Toews’ fault.
I'm with you.

But yes, Pat Foley has significantly deteriorated since coming back from his banishment of doing AHL broadcasts. To the point where I find myself looking for the radio. Foley has gotten overly arrogant and opinionated. He’s also developed terminal diarhea of the mouth. His net presence alone is refreshing on a team of complementary forwards who refuse to play in front of the net.

Troy Brouwer was an enigma with the Hawks. The most frustrating player to watch from game to game during the 3 year playoff run preceding his much deserved departure. And lest we forget, Bowman smartly spun the enigma for a 1st round pick that ended up being Brandon Saad.

really the only hawks that we can afford now that have their names on the cup are
Brouwer at 2.3mil. I’ll take a pass on him and his inconsistencies
Kopy at 3.0mil. Again, too much to watch him fall down all year. (also only 20 points this year so not killing it)
Versteeg at 3.1mil. After seeing his stats this year, I’d happily welcome him back, but we couldnt afford him after the cup
Ladd at 4.4mil. Always will love him, but at 4.4 too expensive.
Niemi at 3.8mil. After CaulderCrow I was ok with seeing him leave, but I would like him back as well now, hindsight my friend. We couldnt afford to keep him after the cup anyway.
This leads me to my most important point. None of these players address what the Hawks really need right now: defenseman
SCH moderator.
Niemi is the one piece most missed
The others? They became too expensive for what their logical role with the Hawks would be. The salary cap is a bitch, but credit Stan Bowman for doing what I believe is downright brilliant job in managing to it’s provisions.
Niemi? At this point he’s proven to me that he is a top shelf goaltender. No, he’s not Pekka Rinne good. Having Niemi instead of the “serviceable” Crawford would go a long way to bolstering this club’s chances to win another Cup. I like Crawford, but he’s not a goalie who can carry a team. Niemi however can be a goalie who can carry a team.

That's how professional sports work when salary cap in place
A NHL player has a limited time span to make his money. I don’t begrudge any player wanting to get paid. Niemi was no longer affordable for the Hawks. But boy is he missed in Chicago. He’s a top 10 goalies in the NHL these days. Make no mistake about that. He can stand on his head when called upon, and he can go into stretches when he carries a team. Crawford is not that brand of NHL goaltender. Nice guy, but he’s not in the league of Niemi. Not even close actually.

Versteeg finds himself on the right team at the right time in terms of putting up personal production totals. So what. Michael Frolik was a routine 20 goal scorer on a “second division” team too. Put today’s Versteeg on this Hawk squad and he wouldn’t have remotely the offensive totals he’s tallied in Florida. And his piss poor defensive lapses would have him squarely in Q’s doghouse.
Versteeg has strong skills. But he’s destined to be an NHL nomad who moves from team to team every two years. Nice guy. But not missed in Chicago.
The Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup in 2010.
I disagree
I remember Versteeg playing well on the third line. His numbers wouldn’t be as high, but I liked what he brought to the table on the third line. I hated how he would float, and refuse to dump the puck, but he seemed to be pretty responsible defensively, and had pretty good chemistry with Bolland.
I dont pretend to watch much Predators hockey this year, or Leafs/Flyers hockey last year, but I didnt see him being a bad player, and he would be pretty good depth at 3mil a year. Bolland makes 3.4 and while I love him, I put him and Versteeg in the same kind of category. Defensively sound with a scoring touch.
For the record, I dont see Frolik as a 20 goal scorer. I know he did it twice in Fla, but I think that was more an exception to the rule, than the rule. Bickell scored 20 last year…

Kane’s Superman act with the exploding puck… I can’t believe I haven’t heard anyone talk about how INCREDIBLY dangerous that was. As the resident goalie guy...
I’m wondering if you can tell me if there’s an NHL rule in place prohibiting all black pads/trapper/blocker. And I mean ALL BLACK, even the manufactures logo (e.g. matte black on glossy black or vice versa). The reason I ask is because I believe it would be a huge advantage on goal replays. I think the reasoning is obvious, the all black equipment would obscure the reviewers ability to locate the puck with any level of certainty.

Trade rumors and speculation.
I know, I know, consider the source.
But – 1. These actually seem like reasonable possibilites and 2. In the absence of links it gives us something to argue about discuss civily.
From JJ @ hockeybuzz:
I don’t believe there are any legs to the rumors of the Hawks being in on Alex Semin or Tuomo Ruutu.
The Hawks are, however, scouting and likely talking to both those players’ clubs. The players I’m told the Hawks have spoken with Caps GM George McPhee about (as previously reported here) are big defenseman John Erskine and defensive center Jeff Halpern. Conversely, they are alleged to be scouting defenseman Bryan Allen and penalty killing wing Chad LaRose from the Hurricanes.
and
I’m told the Hawks have spoken (albeit a few weeks ago now) with Tampa Bay about a second line wing, defenseman Brett Clark and 4th line C/W Nate Thompson. Clark and Thompson also fit the pattern outlined above.
McPhee, I’m told, was at Rogers Arena last night and apparently talks with the Hawks are not dead.
Don’t know much about any of these players but they seem like the kind of acquisitions that Stanbow would make. Nothing real high profile or big contract, but low risk, solid veterans that can fill out the roster in areas of need this season without long term contract entanglements. They also seem like acquisitions that can be had while giving up acceptable losses in trade.
Well, what say ye!

From my understanding
in regards to Carolina, Rutherford’s asking price for Allen is an “A” level prospect and a 1st rounder. As far as Hockeybuzz goes, it is good for a laugh when you are down in the dumps. For instance this was proposed as a reasonable trade by some over there:
Frolik, Olsen, 2012 1st round pick for Sutton & Gagner.
No worries, this was the plan all along!

Would you make that deal
for Allen & Ruutu?
No worries, this was the plan all along!
SCH resident medicinal resource
No.
As much as I would like to see Ruutu back in the Indianhead, giving up three first round picks for him and an aging D-man, also with a fairly hefty salary, seems unreasonable.
I know Allen & Ruutu were first rounders also, but they have not had first round careers, IMO. The potential of Olsen is too high, and given the Hawks recent track record on high draft picks I would rather hold on to this years number one and take our chances with that pick.

Believe me, I thought long and hard before posting that info.
Most of the time I look in on hockeybuzz solely for comic relief.
The only reason I decided to is because, like I mentioned, it seemed they could be legit, not the usual “trade Kane” buffoonery you get over there.
Just thought it might spark a good trade speculation discussion, which I always enjoy.

The beat writers are good for nothing but telling us the lines in practice anymore.
It’s pretty pathetic. If you’ve ever been to Canada and read their newspapers and coverage of their teams it’s just completely different.
I do stuff for CheerTheAnthem
Why is that?
Think the papers etc just don’t give them the budget for it or what? What’s the reason?
I think.. and this is Opinion, folks..
that it’s similar to, say, White House “beat” reporters: they are essentially there to relay press releases/conferences to the wider world and are neither expected or encouraged to do anything more. In fact, doing so could well lead to banishment… I’ll bet that Canada has its Beat reporters but also has “investigative” journalists assigned to teams.. mainly to do with it being the National Obsesssion Sport
"Kevin, You can't play Doom Metal while wearing a scarf"
Chris Kuc and Tracy Myers are no Helen Thomas.
Gotta disagree with that a bit.
I do stuff for CheerTheAnthem
Helen Thomas worked for UPI..
so slightly different for the wires.. but the kind of thrust of my point is this: (and it’s a potentially harrowing analogy).. if Kuc was interviewing Seabs in the Hawks locker room and suddenly Kane and Toews came out of the showers punching each other.. should he report it? If he does, he ain’t ever getting near that locker room again. That’s the price they pay for “access”..
"Kevin, You can't play Doom Metal while wearing a scarf"
I think you're mostly right.
Columnists here are supposed to do a majority of the opinion pieces. The Rosenblooms, Telanders, and Haughs of Chicago. While I think the beat writers can, should and sometimes do do more than just recap the game, I’ve always felt their main job is reporting on the goings-on with the team.
Also, i think the majority of Chicago does not care to see in-depth analysis of the Xs and Os of each game in the paper. And while they are struggling, the papers are still trying to appeal to the masses, not a niche group of rabid hockey fans. Canada’s coverage will be more in-depth because there is a greater interest in it than there is here.

What do you think will come out of the CBJ - Kings controversy with the time being frozen?
BJ GM makes a good point
“In addition, this result matters to every other team in the Western Conference that is competing with Los Angeles for a playoff spot. We will never know if the Kings would have got the extra point in overtime or shootout, but they may not have. This extra point in the standings could have an enormous impact both competitively and economically. What if the Kings make the playoffs by one point or gain home ice advantage by one point? We could be talking about a team not making the playoffs and missing out on millions of dollars in playoff gates. No one can ever convince me that this result does not matter.”

Uh, we had a slight weapons malfunction, but uh... everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here now, thank you. How are you?

question time
regarding this “Clock Controversy” in the Beej/Kings game.. I’m inferring from the reports that timekeeping is in the control of the home team at Hockey games.. is this true? And if so… WHAT!!?? That’s beyond insane.

Always been this way
Basketball and football have the same thing, too.

that is truly incredible.
from a European perspective (where sports like Soccer and Rugby don’t work in fractions of seconds like NHL/NFL/NBA) there would be uproar.. how is this policed?

Pretty sure the time for nfl is kept by an official on the field
If you must scream to get noticed, maybe you should whisper instead

you mean aside from prospects and picks, right?
because at least one Core player would have to be involved

Also, if like me you were kind of curious about Shaw's TOI, we have our answer
“It’s a work-in-progress,” Quenneville said. “He can cut down his shifts; he gets out there a little bit long. But we like him out there because he’s doing some good things. In the puck area he sustains a lot of pucks and makes a lot of neat and handy plays in tight areas.”
Quenneville revealed who it is on the bench who yells for Shaw to come off the ice after particularly long shifts.
“Sometimes me, sometimes the guy who wants to get out there for him," Quenneville said with a laugh.

how much you want to bet the players screaming at him are
Toews/Kane/Hossa?
"Orange Mocha Frappuccino!"
and I don't think he will
(depending on trades, of course).. he’s now occupying Carcillo’s slot and doing a damn fine job of it. Part of what has impressed me has been his curbing of his more aggressive urges: after dropping them about ten seconds into his first game (and getting his ass kicked) he’s been a model of restraint. I may be suggesting Machiavellian motives on the Nucks’ part, but I think part of the rough treatment he got the other night was an attempt to goad him into taking a penalty.. and he resisted admirably.. so the kid has the right temperament (he’s learning what it takes to be a part of the Hawks machine) as well as his obvious skill, effort and guts. I like.

to be honest i think the majority of his PIMS have come from fights
not necessarily dumbass selfish penalties

that's what I meant...
nothing the nucks would have liked better than Shaw taking an instigator etc to give them some PP time

So the top line has taken over as the top shutdown role. Replacing Bolland’s line when he had Frolik and Bickell on it. Second line is mostly a scoring line and tends to matchup more with other teams third lines. Hawks 4th line plays the opponents 4th lines.
So top line and third line have switched on this years defensive depth chart from last year.
and stalberg
Somthing about this needs to change. Hopefully that 3rd line gets something going soon

What about Morrison?
And yep Kaner/Stalberg are your top line defensive pair for the Hawks. Well, the Hawks have become a one against ones kinda team…
Ignore Morrison
Didn’t notice it in the list. Was paying more attention to the top than the bottom.
But it does show that Morrison wasn’t being used on the third line. And probably isn’t a replacement for Toews or Bolland in the defensive assignments.
