In other news, Sassone reporting on a rumor that...

…we’re talking to the Islanders about Nabokov. Might be bullshit but I, for one, would LOVE to see this happen if for no other reason the fact that it indicates that Stan might actually be owning up to the boneheaded move he made when he decided Corey was a starting goalie.

by bluekoolaide on Feb 10, 2012 11:06 AM CST reply actions

Very small sample size...

…especially when you consider that he had a very undistinguished minor league career. Anybody who knows me will attest that he was my number one worry going into this season. This is one of those times when I really hate being right.

Boneheaded move?

Pretty sure the consensus was the opposite.

He’ll always break your heart. His playoff track record inspires no confidence. He’s undersized, athletic, and unorthodox, which we saw turn into a disaster with Marty Truco last year.

The Hawks saw him behind a #1 seed Sharks team two years ago where almost every shot that got by him beat him clean.

I’ve said it before, the only goalie that the makes any sense for the Hawks to go out and get is J-S Giguere.

I guess we didn't watch the same series.

I thought Nabby played good, just a lot of bad luck for the Sharks.
And the series before that against Detroit he was great, he was the reason we won in 5 and not 6 or 7. I’d take him over Niemi, but I guess I shouldn’t judge Niemi on such a small playoff sample size.

Just because it was a consensus move doesn't excuse anything

I absolutely believe that, with the possible exception of getting rid of Campbell, putting too much faith in Crawford has been the major nail in the coffin.

Except for a few weeks in October, he’s been shaky at best and there’s no way I see us going deep in post with him.

At this point though...

…I’m starting to seriously wonder if we’re even going to GET into the playoffs. Based on what we’ve seen so far, there’s no reason whatsoever to believe that Crawford is suddenly going to figure it out. If anything, he’s regressed over the past few weeks.

I’m at the desperation stage where I’m thinking it’s better to roll the dice and see what happens.

15-10-3 = 98 Points

Before the start of this trip, going 15-13-4 looked like a lock to get to 98 (ie. a little better than .500 hockey to earn one more point than last year). I haven’t joined the panic just yet, but our margin for error is starting to dwindle.

15-10-3 hockey is just under our current YTD percentage of 60%. Time to play hockey again boys.

Hopefully this season. I don’t disagree that he is playing like shit, I just don’t think it’s time to give up on him.

by wavering radiant on Feb 10, 2012 11:32 AM CST via iPhone app up reply actions

I'm honestly not trying to be a downer here...

…but I’ve been hearing people say that they think he’ll rebound since November and, basically, he’s only gotten worse.

I guess my problem is that I don’t get what this confidence in his rebounding is based on. I mean, it’s not like he’s Ryan Miller who actually has a track record of excellence. Crawford had, at best, a good half season. He’s never been anything more than a marginal player in the minors. Once again, I’d love to be wrond about this but I’m at the point were I get sick to my stomach at the thought of the two softies he’s usually good for every game,

by bluekoolaide on Feb 10, 2012 2:04 PM CST up reply actions

Corey earned the right to be the starting goaltender last year

based on his play.

How in the holy fuck was Stan supposed to know what would happen to Crawford this year. Coming into this season we had a lot of questions marks, Corey Crawford was not one of them. Stupid comments like this irritate the fuck out of me.

He’s playing bad now and they’re probably trying to figure out what to do.

The only thing boneheaded would have been to not name him the starter this year, based on how well he played last.

by Skags on Feb 10, 2012 11:54 AM CST up reply actions

What irritates the fuck out of me is people who ignore the points...

…of the argument in favor of blanket statements. The point is that Crawford was named the starter based on extremely small sample size. He was never anything more than a mid-level minor league prospect. Name him the starter. Whatever. But you sure as hell better have a plan B in place in case it doesn’t work out and, sorry, but a gimpy, mediocre Ray Emery is not what I had in mind.

StanBow gets paid a lot of money to be smarter than we are and, I’m sorry but, based on Crawford’s atrocious play, naming him starter was the definition of “boneheaded” and it has the potential to sink the entire season.

by bluekoolaide on Feb 10, 2012 2:11 PM CST up reply actions

You have, literally, no idea what you're talking about.

Extremely small sample size? Crawford played in 57 games last year. He had a GAA of 2.30 and a SV% of .917. Not naming him the starter would have been bone-headed.

You were saying?

The Sharks aren’t big and bad anymore. They certainly have some offense, but I don’t know about “explosive”.

Honestly, compared to the Team Drama " thing you have going on here, they can measure up to that as well. Everytime the Canucks beat these guys its always “because of …something”. They are a weak minded team, and I would take Captain Marvel over Stinkfinger any day.

Honestly, The Hawks can and should beat these guys. Its all about the will right now with you guys though, isn’t it?

Not predicting what will happen with the Dmen tonight as far as who plays

but them calling up Olsen doesn’t mean he’s gonna play. Monty is out and if Hammer is sick, that’d leave just 1 dman in reserve. Playing in Phoenix tomorrow night as well so if we lose another dman for some reason, we are screwed. Better to have Olsen here just in case. Two turnovers in the neutral zone in the past few games? (Q logic)

I can understand that trying to kick start Frolik’s game (if that is the intention, Q does like to throw Hossa and Fro on the same line) forces Stals down to the bottom 2 lines, but why is he on the 4th and Shaw on the 3rd?

i did always think q had a very short leash for stals...

i wanted to ask you about that actually when i saw your comment on fifth feather. you mentioned there (and here once) that shaw often gets out of position to make hits, etc…is that in all situations (so 5×5 and pk)? i wondered because q continues to play him in those situations with pretty hefty minutes, and i don’t udnerstand why if thats the case.

I'm sure he's better behaved on the PK

Finishing checks even strength can be ok. You take yourself out of the play, but an opponent too.

Shorthanded, you turn a 5-on-4 into a 4-on-3 when you finish a check. bad puppy.

Satan's advocate

Looking at this from another perspective…

It’s not a demotion, as much as it is trying to bring some life to that 4th line. And on the other hand, putting Frolik on the top line might give him a nudge to start producing.

On it’s face, I agree it looks like Stals is being demoted. But it might just be he’s so highly thought of, that his speed and offensive prowess may just jump start Morrison. Who we should thank by the way. He’s shown us what Kruger is going to look like 8 years from now.

I have no idea WTF he’s doing. All this will be for not though. These lines won’t make it past the first icing.

Ugh.

by Skags on Feb 10, 2012 1:06 PM CST up reply actions

Kruger following morrison's career, I could live.

Morrison was a top line center in this league for a while (granted he was between naslund and bertuzzi in their prime). But he was certainly a legit top 6 center at a point in his career.

I will agree with the Fro to the top line

in order to help start him producing if Q leaves him there longer than the customary 2 or 3 shifts before Q decides things aren’t working and changes everything up. I know there are many problems with this team but I still think that Q’s constant shuffling is doing more harm than good.

Question for you. A.) Whats your specialty

and B.) I dont know if you read that article on Crosby’s neck injury presenting concussion like symptoms. They discussed soft tissue damageand damage to the mechanoreceptors inhibiting proprioception, wouldnt you think that injury would be more prevalent in the sport (or any sports for that matter)? Its the first Ive ever heard of an injury like that. it seemslike injury like that would be rampant in the contact sports in particular.

by BigCSouthside on Feb 10, 2012 2:49 PM CST up reply actions

My original specialty is infectious disease

and I have my boards coming up for emergency medicine. Mechanoreceptors are receptors that receive and pass input from any mechanical stimulus like pressure while the proprioceptors assist the body in posturing, movement, and changes in equilibrium so the body can compensate and keep itself in the position that the person wants to maintain.

I can see how the proprioceptors can cause the concussion symptoms but I have a little more trouble connecting the mechanoreceptors as concrete evidence of one causing the other. I guess if you look at it like: Mechanoreceptors in the feet pass on the pressure related to standing to the proprioceptors as it being the position of choice and then the proprioceptors having difficulty passing on and / or maintaining the signals to sustain that position one could effect the other. I would expect this to be a bigger problem in sports that require physical contact (football, hockey, rugby etc……) and I think that it probably has been recognized for some time but kept quiet or swept under the rug. However, with the new emphasis on brain injuries in professional sports it should become more of a focus.

Like I said there may be many more cases

but as you know those in the professional sports world haven’t been particularly keen about announcing and advertising brain injuries or their resulting outcomes.

With that culture of secret keeping kind of being torn down and more of an onus being placed on the player’s long term health I would think / hope it will begin receiving the attention that it requires.

Tuke, question for you

This is probably right in your wheelhouse: Do you think there is more the Hawks could or should be doing to prevent the yearly spread of viruses throughout their ranks? This seems to happen every year (sometimes twice); and for all the cutting-edge medical care they get with injuries, I would think there could be more done with preventing the spread of these viruses. With how much these guys get paid per game, and how important it is to have healthy players, I would think they consult with an epidemiologist on how to prevent the spread of communicable diseases.

Or, is this just an unavoidable product of them being in such close quarters on the bench and in the locker room?

I’m sure this happens to other teams too, or maybe it doesn’t?

Let's Go Hawks!

by K_Dog on Feb 10, 2012 3:57 PM CST up reply actions

Pretty much all the organization can do

is ensure the players and other personnel have yearly vaccinations like the yearly flu vaccine and hope the everyone practices good hygiene. Something as simple as washing hands can do wonders to prevent the spread of illness. Interesting story: Florence Nightengale was able to reduce infection rates from near 90% down to around 14% by simply making sure everyone washed their hands. It sounds simple but it is very important.

Other than that, the players, coaches, etc.. come in to contact with so many people it is going to be very difficult to prevent.

What’s really screwy is I get most of the Bulls games on WGN or Comcast plus I get most of the Pacer’s games. I don’t understand it

If you must scream to get noticed, maybe you should whisper instead

WGNAmerica

They split WGN into two channels, the local Chicago feed and “WGNAmerica”. The latter doesn’t carry the hawks games, at least on my TV here in DC. Sucks.

none of the Sportnets, TSN or TSN2 or any of the other channels lol

Hockey is a fast game

But nothing like pre-game lineup speculation. I need to go lie down for a while.

Hey! I take penumbrage at that!

Free Center Ice

If I remember correctly there is a free center ice preview (at least on Direct TV) 2-13 – 2-19. Hopefully some of you can enjoy.

SCH moderator. I'm the nice one. Really, I am. (you can quit laughing now)
