Unfortunately it was on a 4th liner. But thats the right idea, just against Thornton, Couture.. theyve been targetting Toews, and in retaliation you target Winchester? Are the Hawks scared to hit their top players because they dont have an enforcer or something? They need to do that to Couture, Pavelski, Thornton, Marleau, Boyle.

Hes one of the worst goaltenders in the NHL. Has been all season. He was great last postseason but thats one series, in which he didnt keep his team from falling down 3 games to 0 either. Played well after that but hes not an NHL starter. Lets in soft goals almost every game, especially against good teams.

And twice tonight it’s led to goals, for them. If he whiffs on a save once in a while, I’ll understand, but losing his net like that so often? Grrrr…
How hard can it be?
the worst part
Is that he struggled with the very same thing when he first got called up in 2005. All those years in the AHL apparently did nothing.

Wasnt just Crawford's fault
You let someone get a clear stick on the puck from the goal crease and its probably going in anyway. Mitchell outbattled the defense and got himself free otherwise its no goal anyway.

but not on every goal :)
it’s the same as the blowouts in the playoffs for us. I know people love to make fun of Lu and that’s fine – whatever works for you- but he didn’t deserve all of the blame for those games :)
Crawford made some mistakes tonight but not every goal in a game is 100% on him :) But yeah that one was bad – as was the other when he was out of his net
Go Canucks Go!
Generally speaking
It’s better for a goalie to stay in the front of his net where the pucks go in. It’s much easier to keep them out then from behind it.

He wasn’t worried about Turco taking over the starting job from him once he got it. He’s looking behind the net to see if Razor is lurking there waiting to jump in.

Let's look at this objectively
It’s basically held as fact around here that Huet sucked in 2010, right?
Crow now has the same Sv% as Huet at the end of 2010. His Sv% is actually WORSE than Huet’s if you take out Huet’s final meltdown.
Crow’s GAA is actually MUCH worse than Huet’s was, but that part can be attributed more to the team in front of each of them. Sv% really can’t.
Just as Bickell had a very good rookie season last year and sucks this year, Crow sucks this year too. Not sure why it’s different for a goalie than a forward or any other player?

by girlphoenix on Feb 11, 2012 12:01 AM CST up reply actions
Well
Tonight, his soft goals have negated what has been probably the best game they have played in a while. In general, he seems to let in a lot of soft goals and does so at the worse possible moments, killing momentum for the team.
And he's the only player on the team so the game relies completely on him
by girlphoenix on Feb 11, 2012 12:06 AM CST up reply actions
No
Lord knows there are a ton of issues on this team, and hardly anyone has played consistently well, especially in this slide.
I am not trying to pick a fight, I really am not. But Crow’s save percentage is very bad and he seems to be fighting it, and has been fighting it all season. He is not the only problem, but he does seem to be below average and you cannot have that in a goalie. His struggles make everything else so much more difficult.
I don’t think you can win consistently with a below average goalie, and I think Crow, right now, and for most of this year, is a below average goalie.
An excellent read would be today's pregame from FeartheFin
http://www.fearthefin.com/2012/2/10/2788735/chicago-blackhawks-san-jose-sharks-game-preview
Their Fenwick percentage when the game is tied tells an even better story frankly, one that fits the narrative of what Sharks fans generally believe— Chicago is currently 4th in the NHL behind only Detroit, St. Louis, and Pittsburgh at even strength. This, among other things, speaks to just how elite this team is at controlling the flow of play on a nightly basis.
But again, the goaltending.
Then he looks at expected goals and wins if the Hawks had just “average” goaltending…
With league average goaltending the Blackhawks would have given up 20 less goals this seasonNow imagine if the Hawks had “above-average” goaltending!
That is good for somewhere in the vicinity of 3.5 to 4 wins going by historical numbers
3.5 to 4 wins is roughly 7 to 8 points in the standings
7 to 8 points in the standings is the difference between competing for the Presidents’ Trophy or starting your postseason on the road against one of either Detroit, Vancouver, or San Jose

We would have won this game
Also remember there is a mental component to this as well. In addition to the numbers, how hard must it be to try to climb back from being down a couple goals, when in the back of your mind you wonder if your goalie will let in another softy, and all this is for not.
FYI, the numbers actually "take into account" the mental aspect
because when a team “deflates” that shows up in the stats for the most part. I hear what you’re saying though and agree.

Its a great article
But I don’t really like just using the math to blame the goaltending.
Its a team game in that end of the ice too, you know? Maybe its being a Luongo fan, and hearing all the rationalizations for hating him.
I can see that Crawford is making some mistakes, but jesus, when a shooter has all day in front, you know?

I tried sticking up for him most of the year

very good read
I’ve given up hope on getting a top 6 forward or another defender. That won’t solve this team’s real problem. It’s too bad because this team’s offense was killing it for a long time. Now, the style of play needs to be somewhat/completely rewritten to accommodate bad goaltending.
I get that he hasn't been good and has actually been bad
but it’s still a team game. Tonight wasn’t a good example, but how many games have we had this year when we just couldn’t score any goals. Yeah it’s bad if your goalie is gonna let in a shit ton of goals but if you can’t produce any offense, then it doesn’t matter if you have the best or the worst goalie, you’re still not gonna win.
I dunno. My whole point is team win/team loss. Also I can’t get everyone getting so worked up about it, because it’s just a game really.
by girlphoenix on Feb 11, 2012 12:21 AM CST up reply actions
its OK to get worked up about it
that is what drives me nuts too. In Van, blaming the goalie is an Olympic sport…and they do let in shitty goals.
But its a team game. I always say that too. Good instincts!

5 times
which actually means the problem is worse. That means the Hawks are scoring even more in the games they actually have a chance to win, and aren’t winning them.
There’s a great stat for goalies, my favorite actually, called “quality starts” it’s like QS for baseball pitchers. I’ll put it together and post it this week.
Earlier in the season even, Crow would’ve been last 29th in the league among starters.

His defensive game has been fine. Offense and some intangibles have been lacking I can’t deny. But it was more for illustrative purposes that everyone could agree on ;)

Brent Burns has been schooling Chicagos best forwards all night
I still cant believe the 29 other GMs let Minnesota be that stupid. Setoguchi for Burns? Setoguchi had less points as a forward last year than Burns, who played for a team that never scored so he never got 2nd assists or anything. What a brutal trade and now the other contenders have to pay the price of Minnesota’s stupidity, San Jose basically gets a free #1 defenseman. Chicago had to actually draft theirs and develop them. San Jose just gets top line centers and dmen for free from other teams.

Heatley for Havlat was part of that trade

That said, yeah, we’d obviously do it again in a heartbeat.

You can just tell this is a victory San Jose will savor and use for momentum and talk about how they punched adversity in the mouth so many times, even when gigantic mean Andrew Shaw tried to take advantage of poor little Douglas Murray. but I was under the impression that the Nucks have quite a few players coming up for either UFA or RFA status. Now you forced me to look at CapGeek dagnabit!
Mason Raymond, Dale Weise and Mike Duco. All interesting players, but apart from Raymond…hell, even he is replaceable. Andrew Ebbett will be a UFA. Bitz and Volpatti expire for next year too.
Thats in 12/13…then Cody Hodgson the year afterwards. He’ll hopefully be worth big bucks. by then. Deals coming up for Burr, Higgins, Lapierre and Malhotra the same year as Cody.
The back end is more of the same, its spaced out, with guys that are replaceable like Sulzer and Rome UFA next year, and Sami Salo, who will sign one year deals until he retires ( hopefully this year so he can go out with a ring! ;-)
Nut yeah, the big RFA next year is Schneids, and then Cody after that.
The core is all signed. Burr will get a huge raise and then everyone will call him a superstar and like him and vote him to ASG’s like other players that score like he has the last few year.
Just to be an ass, he’ll probably sign a fair market deal with a slight hometown discount!

I said to myself “here it comes” when Frolik went up to the line and Olsen went down way low on the boards.
Frolik was the last guy back, with the puck, one poke check and its a breakaway, and it ended up being one anyhow to start the play ( he almost got back with being such a good skater too…but it was like, “where you going kid?” )

In all seriousness...
Crow has to make a few saves. His save percentage and goals against are an embarassment. When the Hawks D plays poorly, and they have recently, I understand it. However, the Blackhawks played well enough to win tonight. There is always an excuse for Crow…The D wasnt there, the core didnt score, the bottom 6 didnt score it is always something.
The bottom line is that a goalie has to win a game by overcoming all that bullshit…Crow cannot do it right now. Why? Confidence? Who knows. He just needs to sit up in the press box for a while. Is Huet the answer? I doubt it.All I know is maybe we can use some of the cap room created by Campbells trade (looks great now, huh?) to pick up a goalie….

But when it’s suggested trading for someone to upgrade for a guy who is performing much worse and costing the team much more, you reply even more sarcastically?

Just didn't know if you seriously thought that upgrading the goaltending (if even possible)
was actually stupid, or if you were being sarcastic.
OK, so I guess you were semi-serious. IMO if one removes the PK goals and the soft goals, the Hawks dominated this game. The officiating was pretty awful too (which led to the PKs).
Yeah, the Hawks PK is awful, but tonight I can give them a slight mulligan. We all know Leddy shouldn’t be on the PK and tonight, with Hjammer out, he had slightly more PK time than Seabs. Not good. OD had some time on the PK, but basically Q was using 3 guys – and again, one of them was Leddy.
And I felt the defense looked pretty damn good considering Hjammer and Monty were out, leaving two pimple-faced kids, an AARP card carrying member, and some guy Q found going through the trash in the press box holding down the fort.
This team is in a funk. They’ll come out of it, but currently goaltending is the biggest culprit. Pick up a d-man and a SOMEHOW improve the goaltending and this team goes on a tear to finish out the season.

I wish, but considering the odds of one let alone both happening, it is actually depressing knowing these holes exist now as big as they are and do not appear to be able to be fixed.

Schneider, Miller...Giguire...Not real picky right now
Not trying to be a guy just throwing shit out there either. It just pisses me off that we lose a salary cap hinderance in Campbell and replace it with a lot of odd parts that just dont fit.
Not thinking of you as a dick either, but they have to do something. We are like 5 points in the playoffs…5 points. Think about it. Can Minnesota win in game 82 to save our season?

Forget the fantasy of another Cup run...
This team, as it’s currently composed, has zero chance.
And unless something is done pretty quickly, we won’t get into the playoffs anyway.
So much for all of the buzz the Hawks were creating in Chicago.

that's true
if we had to rank Chicago in their sports, it’d always be Bears first. Then Bulls, Hawks (still riding on 2010 goodwill), Cubs/Sox (order depending on your allegiance) and all the way in the bottom, next to the “wait, we have a team?” category would be the Fire.

Okay since our team obviously sucks i suggest a complete rebuild
First we gotta get rid of the core. This is going to be tough because our core sucks.
Trade Kane for Ryan Miller = obvious. I think we should also throw in Sharp and Saad to sweeten the deal. Since we need a good player in return, I suggest Vanek. We should actually consider building our team around him.
Next up is a trade sending Toews and Bolland to Colombus for Wisneiwski (we obviously need defense) and perhaps Steve Mason if we’re lucky.
Sharp is going to be hard to get rid of because, while decent at hockey, he is terrible at life. I suggest a trade to Winnipeg for Big Buff (our star d-man) and Kyle Wellwood (some much needed toughness). Sharp won’t be enough so I think we have to throw in Stalberg and Frolik.
Hossa and two first round picks should be traded for Daniel Sedin (our premiere checking center).
Now onto the role players (this is what wins championships!).
We should cut Mayers and trade Olsen and Morin for Paul Bissonette (a solid locker room presense).
Sign Marty Turco to a 5 year deal worth 40 mil.
Scott is going to be our shut-down defenseman along with Wiz.
While Crawford is crappy in net, he is great playing behind it. Put him in at D.
Cut Shaw immediately. Sign Boynton from the ECHL team the LA Strippers.
Fill out the rest of the forwards roster with offensive defensemen (like Sami Salo) for a new offensive strategy Coach Quennaville calls “Switch Good.”
Starting Goalie: Steve Mason
Backup: Ryan Miller
Wellwood – Vanek – Bickell
Bisonettes – Montador – Turco
Boynton – Daniel Sedin – Sami Salo
Sopel – Emery – Frolik (we traded 2 first round picks to get him back)
Reserve: Huet
Buff-Wiz
Scott-OD
Brunette-Crawford
Extra Defenseman: Lepisto

the Hawks played a very good game tonight...
they deserved a W. They hit, they fought, the lines looked good but a couple of mistakes killed them. A lot of positives to carry over into a battle with Phoenix tomorrow. Shaw gets mugged along the boards at the end of the second and then gets sent off for checking a man twice his size with the puck? The Polish pickle takes liberty all night with our stars and when he finally gets his come uppance, the refs let one of the Sharks , (winchester), get away with the instigator. Good job Bicks. Fuck you refs
The hawks played with an edge tonight – keep it up and this thing will be turned around in a hurry. they almost overcame another abysmal performance by crawford.
I think capt was a bit frustrated over this

Is all I’m saying. That said, last year we totally had a period like this, so I get how you feel.
agree
I’m not worried as long as something is done about our goaltending. Otherwise I’ll just keep telling myself the team is going through some systematic changes that aren’t yet natural for the players to execute and expect the team to right the ship in the near future.
It’s also a lot easier to deal with these changes now that a certain someone someone has been banned.
